Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Keith Kidd (4:00 PM)
We're live from Bristol and it's COLD. But it's good to be talking with the 'Nation. We have a few possibilities for the Millen Award this week, so get them in early. Check out the Monday Night Football preview show on PodCenter. We have a lot of good games to talk about.
Wes (Idaho)
What do you think of the Bears chances to get this season back on track?
Keith Kidd (4:02 PM)
I don't like anything about the Bears right now. They were awful last weekend against the Packers. They couldn't stop the run, they couldn't stop the pass. They couldn't do anything offensively. Devin Hester and the return game was non-existent. The good news is that they get the Rams this week.
Bob (Bean Town)
Roger Goodell for the Millen Award.
KC Reeves (San Jose, CA)
Hi Keith, which receiver will do better in the key battle between Carolina and Atlanta: Roddy White or Steve Smith?
Keith Kidd (4:03 PM)
I'm going with Roddy White. He has a better cast around him. Steve Smith seems to the only guy in Carolina. In this game, whichever team can have the most success running the football will be huge in this outcome. Love to see how Matt Ryan responds this week.
chauncey (teaneck)
Will Chad Johnson be with a new team next year?
Keith Kidd (4:04 PM)
Good possibility. But we know it's Cincinnati, so anything can happen. The one thing about the Johnson situation is that we found out what I've always been saying - how good of a player TJ Houshmanzadeh is. He'll be a UFA at the end of the season. On a side note, it could be a long night for the Bengals tonight against that Steelers defense.
Majeed
Definitely McDumb, err I mean McNabb for the Millen award!
Jake (Duluth)
Should the vikings fire childress if they dont make the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (4:05 PM)
I think that's a very distinct possibility if this team doesn't make the playoffs. It looks like only one team is coming out of this division. This team spent a ton of money in the offseason and in my mind they've underachieved since he's been the head coach.
Kev (NYC)
Giants or Cards?
Keith Kidd (4:05 PM)
Giants.
Keith Kidd (4:06 PM)
Something interesting to watch in this game is Clancy Pendergast's Arizona defense and how they matchup against Eli Manning. Two key players to watch are Carlos Dansby and Adrian Wilson.
Dave (Denver)
Are Delhome's problems physical or mental? He sure has fallen off since the start of the season.
Keith Kidd (4:07 PM)
Neither. I think it's just a matter of the effects of not playing last season. But when you break this team down, it's a team that's going to run the ball and rely on its defense and special teams.
Keith Kidd (4:07 PM)
Although their special teams have had some problems.
chris (boston)
will the patriots make the playoffs this year?
Keith Kidd (4:08 PM)
I still think they'll win the AFC East. Man, Matt Cassel is going to make himself a lot of money in the offseason. Keep an eye on Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator. Is a team willing to take a chance on a young, dynamic coach? To me, without a doubt.
Keith Kidd (4:08 PM)
We'll put our hot, young head coaching candidates out there to keep an eye on....
Keith Kidd (4:09 PM)
Steve Spagnuolo, Rex Ryan, Clancy Pendergast, Josh McDaniels and Brian Schottenheimer.
Steiny (NYC)
Has the NFL gone too far in reinstating Adam Jones?
Keith Kidd (4:10 PM)
Yes. How long does it take for a guy to get it? How many chances does a guy get it? He just needs to go away, period. This is what frustrates me about professional sports. Would you or I get this many chances? No!
darvish: baltimore, maryland
does a quarterback really have to be tall? i think doug flutie(5'9") and drew brees(6'0") along with kurt warner(6'1") have shot that idea down. they didn't have any trouble playing quarterback. do you agree?
Keith Kidd (4:11 PM)
No. To me, you build systems around QBs. Regardless of the measurables, it comes down to a lot of other thigns that makes a QB special. I loved Doug Flutie as a player.
Steiny (NYC)
I spoked to Jim Fassel yesterday and he said that he wants to coach in the NFL next season. Do you think he is going to coach in the NFL next season?
Keith Kidd (4:11 PM)
I worked with Jim Fassel in Arizona and he was a great offensive coordinator for us. He's a great man and a good friend. I hope he gets another opportunity.
Kev (NYC)
Would Lane Kiffen have an adverse effect on McDaniel's prospects as HC? or is that a reach?
Keith Kidd (4:12 PM)
No, because Kiffin came from college to the pros. McDaniels has been an NFL coach a lot longer than Kiffin was even in the NFL.
Keith Kidd (4:12 PM)
Comparing in both of those guys, not even close.
Keren (Maui)
Roger Goodell for the Millen Award based on an incredible run of inconsistent fines and semi suspensions.
KL (philly)
do you think the reason pacman got back in is because its jerry jones asking? just a guess, but i'll bet he was whining to goodell
Keith Kidd (4:13 PM)
If there's one thing we've learned about the commissioner is that he is not afraid to drop the hammer on anybody. So, it's obvious to me that whatever he put on him to do to get back in, Pacman did them.
Shabu (Garden City)
Hi KK, will Ronnie Brown have any success against NE this weekend? I'm sure Belichek will pull out all the stops against him.
Keith Kidd (4:14 PM)
It's hard to say will he have any success, because he's a great player. He was the former second player chosen in the draft. But you can bet the house that the one thing the Patriots will do better in this matchup is tackle better in space, which they didn't last time. The one thing the Dolphins have to do is run the ball to give Chad Pennington a chance. I like the Patriots in this game.
Brandon (Minnesota)
With all the injuries to running backs in the NFL this year. Are you surprised that adrian peterson has been mostly healthy all year?
Keith Kidd (4:15 PM)
Yes and no. The biggest concern I have about AP is his up right style. He's going to absorb a lot of big hits, but he's also going to give out a lot of big hits.
Will J (Portland, OR)
Keith, which would you play Roethlisberger v. Cincinnati, or Eli v. Arizona?
Keith Kidd (4:16 PM)
Tough call. Because the one tough matchup in tonight's game is Roethlisberger against that Bengals backend. It's going to be a cold environment. I'd probably go with Eli against Arizona.
Matt (Denver)
Hey Kidder! Hard to imagine that inuries to the Broncos D would actually improve that unit - but it could be the case with Winborn and Woodyard looking pretty game. Can the Broncs scratch together enough D to make some noise?
Keith Kidd (4:17 PM)
They're going to have to, because they have no choice. To me, this team is going to have to score anywhere from 24-27-30+ points to continue to win. However, they get a pass this weekend, because they have the Raiders coming to town. This could give their defense more confidence. But this team has to address their defense in the offseason.
Eric (Indy)
I know the NFL won't adopt College Footballs overtime system, but what about their instant Replay system? It would be much better than what they are propposing with the 2nd look format, and the booth system would have much better angles than what the Refs have on the field!
Keith Kidd (4:18 PM)
I agree. Great point.
Dan (Reno)
Saw Big Ben say that he'd guess at least half of the players didn't know you could tie. I'm not gonna get all crazy about that, but shouldn't the league be embarrassed that it hasn't taught its players the rules?
Keith Kidd (4:19 PM)
Hey Dan, the biggest difference between the college game and pro game is the amount of time the coaches spend with the players teaching. Being raised by a coach, I know they don't leave any stone unturned.
Matt
KK I know you like the giants what do you think the score of the game this weekend is 31-24ish?
Keith Kidd (4:20 PM)
Giants 27-21.
Lucifer (480AZ)
Yo Keith, who do you think has been the best rookie this year???
Keith Kidd (4:20 PM)
Matt Ryan. Check out my top 25 rookies on ESPN.com.
Josh (NJ)
What are the Rams going to do in the off-season to get themselves to be the kind of team they had in 2000? Who will they take with their 1st round pick, Crabtee or a OL? Who is available in free agency that they might want? Will Warner be back in blue and gold to end his career in 09?
Keith Kidd (4:21 PM)
First of all, is there going to be an ownership change? That's the first question. If not, then I think you'll see a new head coach. But I don't think you'll see many changes in the personnel department.
Lucifer (480AZ)
Who do you think the candidates for MVP are so far this season?
Keith Kidd (4:22 PM)
Kurt Warner, Drew Brees, Clinton Portis.
Keith Kidd (4:22 PM)
But hey, lots of things will change.
Matt
KK the redskins currently have the most people going to the pro bowl. We all know that shouldnt be. Do you think they need to reformat the way players go to Hawaii?
Keith Kidd (4:23 PM)
I kind of like how they have it set up now. Fans have input, along with players, coaches and certain front office people.
Kev (NYC)
How could you possibly blame the league for not educating the players?! If you're making millions it's up to you to know every single rule let alone an obvious as one as 1 OT. What McNabb did/said was a joke and he should be embarassed. Your thoughts?
Keith Kidd (4:24 PM)
What I said was, that coaches leave no stone unturned. But as much communication that players have on a daily basis with each other along with studying and watching the league, he had to know the OT situation.
Keith Kidd (4:25 PM)
I'm sure it's something that he wished he had not said.
Steiny (NYC)
Is Dustin Keller the real deal?
Keith Kidd (4:26 PM)
Yes. In this offense. you have to give Brian Schottenheimer a lot of credit. He's playing to the strengths of Brett Favre. They're doing things offensively that's allowing Brett Favre to play to make plays.
Kevin (NJ)
How much of a factor will the Jenkins vs Mawae matchup play into the Jets/Titans game?
Keith Kidd (4:27 PM)
It will be a huge factor. It all starts up front at NT within a 3-4 defense. He must be able to stabilize the interior of that defense. That will allow the LBs to play fast and down hill. The Jets have to stop the Titans running game.
Kev (NYC)
KK, I wasn't referring to what you said, I was referring to Dan (Reno) Thanks!
Matt (Denver)
On a brutal team with a carousel at QB, Kevin Smith has been pretty impressive, especially against some stout defenses. Your thoughts?
Keith Kidd (4:28 PM)
Hey Matt, I'm right with you. Go check out my impact rookie list on ESPN.com. Top 25. I would have put more in there, but those are the rules I have to follow.
Matt (Washington DC)
KK where do you think Cassell is next year?
Keith Kidd (4:29 PM)
He's either in New England at $3 milion a year as a backup. Or he's with a new team in a QB hungry league making $7-10 million as a starter.
Cole (Kansas City)
Have the Chiefs found their answer at QB? what do you think of Thigpen's play?
Keith Kidd (4:30 PM)
You have to be impressed with the way Tyler Thigpen has done and a lot of credit should go to Chan Gailey. I am not yet convinced that he's the future guy, but he has played well. Let's give some props to the Pistol Formation.
Steiny (NYC)
Is BenJarvus Green-Ellis the best undrafted free agent this year?
Keith Kidd (4:31 PM)
Another great job by Bill Belichick and his coaching staff in the way they teach, find and develop players. The Patriots have a great personnel department.
Justin (Chicago)
How much more valuable is Barber now that Felix is out for the season? With Tashard Choice as now the backup, Barber really better not go down.
Keith Kidd (4:33 PM)
Felix Jones has not played. Barber's been the guy and will continue to be the guy. As you saw against Washington, they're going to need him to play good the rest of the season.
Keith Kidd (4:33 PM)
Felix Jones was placed on injured reserve today.
Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)
I heard somewhere that the approximate market value for Derek Anderson at this point is a 4th round pick. Do you agree with that? And if so, wouldn't it behoove the Browns just to hold onto him after the season?
Keith Kidd (4:34 PM)
If they are going to be shopping Anderson in the offseason, a fourth rounder, the way he has been playing is good value, Considering the Browns don't have many picks next year.
Dan (Reno)
Kev (NYC)- mock McNabb's idiocy all you want, but Roethlisberger, McGinest, and Braylon Edwards each admitted the same. How many veterans does it take to make it a bigger problem than writing it off to Donovan saying something foolish?
Scott (CT)
Titans or Jets this weekend?
Keith Kidd (4:35 PM)
Titans. As the AFC East continues to play magical chairs with the first place team.
Keith Kidd (4:35 PM)
Matt Millen Award nominees?
Cole (Kansas City)
Like your list of top 25 rooks. Would have liked to have seen Brandon Carr somewhere in it? What do you think of his play? Did he shut down Colston last week or is something just not clicking with the Brees to Colston connection?
Keith Kidd (4:37 PM)
Cole, you make a lot of sense about Brandon Carr. Them being the 27th ranked pass defense in the league right now and I haven't seen the consistency I would have hoped to see. He's easily in my top 30. The other guy you have to argue about is Rodgers-Cromartie in Arizona.
Matt (Atl)
Anti-Millen = Thomas Dimitroff .... Thanks NE.
scott (pvd)
will the weather shut down the passing games tonight?
Keith Kidd (4:38 PM)
No, because NFL QBs have a great way of adjusting to any type of weather. If it's going to effect either QB it will be Fitzpatrick, because it's his first start at Heinz Field.
Kev (NYC)
Millen: Donovan F McNabb
Bob, SD
Norv Turner and AJ Smith for the Matt Millen award?
John (SF)
Who do you think nabs the WC spots in the NFC?
Keith Kidd (4:39 PM)
Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Matt (Denver)
Is the window closing on the Chargers (and I don't just mean this season)? Seems like they are getting farther and farther away from the dominant team many thought they could be.
Keith Kidd (4:40 PM)
If they lose Sunday night, yes. However, believe it or not they're still in the thick of this race because this division is so bad. It's obvious to me that I overevaluated this team, because I expected them to play better.
Keith Kidd (4:40 PM)
Matt Millen Award goes to......
Keith Kidd (4:41 PM)
Donovan McNabb. Even if you did or didn't know about the OT situation, keep it in the lockerroom and don't tell the media.
Keith Kidd (4:41 PM)
We can also put the runner up as Phil Savage in Cleveland for him responding in an e-mail to a fan with an obscenity.
Ernie (Sarasota, FL)
What do you think of Aaron Rodgers' play this season and how do you see him panning out in the future?
Keith Kidd (4:42 PM)
I think he's had an outstanding year. In our roundtable discussion among the Scouts Inc. guys, I have him having a huge night against the Saints on Monday night.
Brad(NM)
Was it a mistake for Buffalo to extend Jauron? Sure he's done some pretty good things while there, but he and his staff are far too conservative, especially when they're put into a must-win situation, such as the game on Monday.
Keith Kidd (4:43 PM)
I don't think it was a mistake. I think Dick Jauron is a very good head coach. However, what we're seeing is that we're seeing the growing pains of a QB in the NFL. Trent Edwards is not playing well at all. Even with a running game missing that was found the other night, he still isn't playing well.
Tommy (Charlotte)
Will the Panthers win the division?
Keith Kidd (4:44 PM)
Yes. I like the Panthers in this division. Their schedule is getting a lot tougher. Watch out for the Bucs.
Phil Savage (via email)
Keith, that's a bunch of bull$%$%. I was just giving that $%$%$% what he $#$%$#% deserved!
Vinnie (NYC)
No consideration for Chad Johnson?? Or is that next week's Millen award top nominee?
Keith Kidd (4:45 PM)
Vinnie, my bad. Great call. Remind me next week. I've been on a plane to Bristol and got wind of it late in the day. This guy has gone from a Pro Bowl player to a huge disappointment.
Vinnie (NYC)
Keith I don't understand how Steven Jackson is unable to come back from a simple thigh strain. What is wrong with him??
Keith Kidd (4:46 PM)
Hey Vinnie, he's got a deep thigh contusion with some blood involved in the thigh, which is somewhat serious. Doctors are not going to clear him to play until it clears up.
Kyle (OH)
Troy Williamson for the Matt Millen Award for wanting to fight Brad Childress at the 50-yard line.
Zac (MN)
Brad Childress for the Millen award for getting AD the ball a total of 0 times in the 4th quarter in Sunday's game.
John ( PHX,AZ)
What do you think of Edge asking for his release? Does that mean he would rather start on a bad team than be a back up on a division winner?
Keith Kidd (4:47 PM)
Selfish. His team is going to win the NFC West and something this team hasn't done in forever. He's thinking about his own situation? Amazing. In my view this is his last year in Arizona.
Steiny (NYC)
Bigger disappointment this season. Vernon Gholston or Chris Long?
Keith Kidd (4:48 PM)
Vernon Gholston.
Dave (Philly)
My Eagles should go out and trade for TJ Duckett in the offseason. Just to be a short yardage back...What do you think Seattle will do with Duckett in the off season? Cut him/trade him...and what do you see in the future for him?
Keith Kidd (4:49 PM)
Regardless of Duckett, this team needs a Lorenzo Neal type fullback.
Matt (New York)
How do you rank Kenny Phillips with the other rookies?
Keith Kidd (4:50 PM)
He would probably in the 26-40 range for the simple fact that he hasn't played enough. He's mostly been a situational player. Obviously, he's the future on the back end in their secondary. I really liked him coming out.
Joe (Detroit)
Looking at your top 25 rookies, I see most of the 1st round OTs. I don't see Gosder Cherilous though -- what do you think of him?
Keith Kidd (4:51 PM)
Joe, he can't even get on the field on one of the worst lines in the NFL.
Andrew(tx)
do you think the Cowboys will be able to make the playoffs now that everybody's healthy
Keith Kidd (4:52 PM)
Yeah. I think they will. They have San Francisco and Seattle coming up next.
Dave (Philly)
Perhaps Duckett could be that fullback....big kid!
Kev (NYC)
Is Madison Hedgecock the best FB in football?
Keith Kidd (4:52 PM)
I think he's one of the most underrated players in this league.
Joe (OR)
Do you think the Seahawks will finish better than 3-13?
Keith Kidd (4:54 PM)
I'm amazed that they're 2-8 right now. With all of the injuries that this team has had to overcome, it's a shame in Mike Holmgren's last year as a head coach.
Matt (Denver)
Chris Henry will start for the suspended Chad Johnson. Gotta love them Bengals!
Angelo (Cleveland)
Do you see Romeo Crennell coaching the Browns next year
Keith Kidd (4:55 PM)
I hope so. I really hate for the Browns to make another change at the top, even though the fans want it.
Steiny (NYC)
Two years from now, will Jaguars quarterback David Garrard still be calling signals in Jacksonville?
Keith Kidd (4:56 PM)
Not if they continue to get the injuries they've gotten on the OL. And if they still can't find a No. 1 WR. He won't be on the field, because he won't be healthy. But if they can answer these questions, I do see him being the QB in Jacksonville in the future.
Majeed
Bolts/Colts???
Keith Kidd (4:57 PM)
Colts.
Vinnie (NYC)
Is Burress really being double-teamed more? I swear to me it looks like Eli doesn't even look his way anymore.
Keith Kidd (4:57 PM)
No, he's not being doubled, because they're having so much success running the football, teams have to put an extra guy in the box. That puts him one on one in the back end.
Keith Kidd (4:58 PM)
Hey, it's been great. I've got to run. Make sure you check out the Scouts Inc guys on Sunday from 1-7. I'll be back next week at our original time at 1 p.m. ET. Good luck.
