Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am sorry I did not come through last week so I am now 7-6. I will make a pick for Saturday and then one for the title game in an upcoming chat. Fire away.
Rich (New York, NY
While discussing USC's disappointment with going to the Rose Bowl, the L.A. Times last Sunday called Penn State "Just another Big Ten vase." Do you think they might be overlooking Joe Pa's team?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
First of all, USC has to beat UCLA this weekend. It should happen. If the Trojans play Penn State, they will be a heavy favorite. The Big Ten is not what it used to be and I have been saying that for 20 years.
Dave (Iowa City)
Beano...If Mizzou beats OU, will the voters jump USC up to the top 2 to play in the Nat'l Title game over a non-division winning Texas?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
I don't know. That is a good question. Missouri isn't going to beat Oklahoma. It is possible that Texas could play for the title after not winning its division. It happens in basketball all the time.
Ivan Maisel said in his chat a minute ago that Utah and BYU wouldn't match up academically to the schools in the Pac-10, or atleast that's what the presidents of the schools in the Pac-10 thought. Your thoughts? I think that is silly!
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
I think the Mountain West should be in the BCS, they should get a bid every year. Utah did beat Oregon State and Utah could hold its own against any team in the Pac-10 except USC...that is my opinion. Academically, I leave that argument to professors.
Liz, Fort Smith
Why is Colt McCoy the media "darling"? The Big 12 coaches voted Sam Bradford the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, yet the media (AP) voted for McCoy. Wouldn't the coaches who have to game plan for each QB know better? Sam leads the Big 12 in every major passing statistic except one. It seems ridiculous. Backlash for the Sooners being in the Big 12 Championship game or just media love for McCoy?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
That is two different groups. Everybody gets a trophy. Both guys, as well as Harrell and Tebow can make a case as this is just a wide open year for Heisman and Player of the Year awards.
Beano... acc championship game, who ya got?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
I like Virginia Tech to beat Boston College but that is not my pick of the week...that will some in about 45-50 minutes.
Big Ten has been down for over 20 years huh? Well do you see anything good for the Big Ten happening within the next few years? Something to consider them "back"
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I think the SEC and the Big 12 are the toughest conferences. The Pac-10 overall was weak this year. The Big Ten doesn't have a team that would come close to USC this season. My feeling isPenn State is going to regret that Oregon beat Oregon State last Saturday. Then again Joe Paterno, with time to prepare, has a very good record in bowl games.
Steven (Birmingham, AL)
Beano: I am always a bit surprised when I hear the media's (including ESPN) comments about Alabama's football tradition beginning with Bear Bryant. I would argue that Bryant did not create the tradition at Alabama, but instead continued a winning tradition that already existed through the teams of the 1920s and 1930s coached by Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas. In fact, I would argue that the 1925 team coached by Wallace Wade, which went to the Rose Bowl as a huge underdog and beat Washington, laid the foundation for the success of the SEC and all other Southern teams. Being a historian of the game, I am sure you know that the choice of Alabama to go to the Rose Bowl was ridiculed by the media of the era and Southern football was deemed to be too inferior to merit a Rose Bowl invitation. While we are on the subject, Wallace Wade took three Alabama teams to the Rose Bowl. Then, he went to Duke and took at least one Duke team to the Rose Bowl. Wade is overshadowed by Rockne, but I am not sure that is fair to Wade. Wade would appear to have been one of the best coaches of his era. As a historian of the game, I would like to get your thoughts on both of these issues.
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
Yes, it is true. Bear Bryant made it bigger, you are correct, Wade and Thomas took Alabama to the Rose Bowl. Bryant, is an age of expanding media, took it to a different level.
Andy (Lincoln NE)
Beano: Answer my question for old times' sake (the Huskers were once pretty good, or so I'm told). What's your take on the start of the Pelini era at NU, and are we headed back to national relevance (i.e., consistent appearance in the top 10)? Thanks.
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
That is going to be tough because some of the other schools like Kansas and Missouri are more serious about big-time football than they were before. Pelini will try and will work hard, and he made a nice start this year. An 8-win season is a good start.
Beano, which game would you rather watch, Boise State v. Texas or Ohio State v. Texas? I know I'd rather watch Texas play Boise State and see Texas lose, then they can see how funny it is!
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
I see you are from Oklahoma...that answers why you have that opinion. I would like to see Boise State vs. Texas because that is something different.
Beano, love your work. Do you agree that Weis should be back next year?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I went back and forth, to be honest. On Sunday, I thought he was done. Monday I thought he would be back. I feel next year he has to win nine games, maybe even 10. You have to realize that the present adminstration at Notre Dame is obsessed with winning a national championship in football. Now that he is back, I am not totally surprised.
Why does everyone keep saying, "the voters got it right, the computers got it wrong" in relation to OU getting into the big 12 championship. Do people not see the coaches voted OU over Texas as well?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
Look, no matter which team got the call, there was going to be a dispute. I would have taken Texas but I understand that Oklahoma makes sense too, after putting up four straight games of 60, the perception is the Sooners are hot.
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Oklahoma vs. Alabama or Florida is a very attractive game for the BCS championship. My preseason pick was USC over Florida so I have a shot again of having a team in the title game.
Frank Costanza (Queens, NY)
Lou Holtz picked ND to win 10 games this season. Was he talking about their basketball team?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Number one, I picked them to win nine or 10 as well. I was talking about the football team. I can't believe they only won six games. The six wins came against teams that currently have a 21-49 record (Washington and Navy still have one game each). Pretty unbelievable.
Chaz (Cleveland, OH)
Do you think voters will take into account that Tim Tebow is the returning Heisman winner and has that bullseye on his back the entire year (analgous to a returning National Champion)? Every week the opposing team wants to take a shot at Tebow, yet he has his team one game from the National Title game. Why is this not brought up more?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
First of all, if I vote for Tebow or vote for someone else, it has nothing to do with last year. Right now I am leaning towards Tebow with my vote. I will tell you who I vote for next week in this chat. If Tebow wins the Heisman this year and wins another national title, we will be talking about him in 50 years from now the way we talk about Red Grange now.
What is your opinion on the hiring of Dabo Swinney at Clemson and the departure of the defensive coach?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
I don't have a strong feeling on that. My guess is Koening wanted the job and when he didn't get it, he decided to leave.
Joe (Washington DC)
What do you think of Lane Kiffin at Tennessee? Good or bad choice?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
It is a mysterious choice to me. I guess bringing in his dad, Monte will help th defense. The SEC is a lot tougher than the AFC West, especially now.
Georgia Tech got invited by the former peach bowl who do they play.
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
Not sure yet. I think Clemson will be in the Gator Bowl.
Who's your heisman pick and what criteria do you use (best player, MVP of team, best player on great team, etc.)?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
Heisman pick next week in this chat. I go through this every year. I just vote, that's all.
You are leaning towards Tim Tebow?? Lets not forget they lost to ole miss.. AT HOME...Colt has been the best player in the nation, carrying that team on his back. Leading the team in rushing?? Took a team predicted to win 8 games all the way to the BCS championship picture... you have got to be kidding
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
You make good points. That is just my opinion, and I am entitled to it.
do you think college football needs to get rid of divisions
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Would you like Slippery Rock to play Oklahoma? Of course we need divisions. I know Slippery Rock would challenge to make the first division in the Big Ten. It would be different against Florida and Texas.
Doyle (Columbus, Ohio)
Since Beanie's return, the Bucks are playing much better. They will probably be huge underdogs in either the Fiesta or Sugar Bowls...can they surprise everyone and win a big bowl game?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Yes, it is Ohio State. The team has good athletes. Ohio State and Penn State will fight it out for the Big Ten next season too.
Beano, because this is Jimmy V week what do you remember about him. Did you ever get the chance to meet him?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I will always remember 1983...it was one of the most memorable TV pictures in the history of college basketball, running up and down the court, looking to hug a player after the shocking upset of Houston.
Mike (West Chester, OH)
Do you think Rich Rod will ever beat Tressel and OSU? I never saw a worse OSU/UM rivalry game. Do you think UM will eventually go back to a "Michigan Man" to coach?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
You weren't there in 1946--Michigan 56, Ohio State 6. Let's see what Rodriguez does down the line. Michigan kicked a field goal up 53-6. That's why Woody went for two points in 1968...he did have a long memory.
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
USC will never forget what happened when Notre Dame pounded on them 51-0 in 1966. That is what makes rivalries great, memories like elephants.
Stephanie (Tallahassee, FL)
Hey Beano, why in the world does the SEC still get so much credit this year? They have two good teams and everyone else is average to below average. I am sick of this southern and east coast bias!!!
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
And you are from Talahassee? You have to go and take some Tylenol if you are sick of it.
David (Baltimore, Md)
Beano quite dissin the Big 10. They may be a bit down but PSU and Ohio State would both dominate the ACC this year, and fight for the SEC title.
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
I don't think they would fight for the SEC title this year, sorry. I like to have fun with the Big Ten. A lot of it is tougue-in-cheek.
Dave S (Oxford, MS)
am I a delusional fan to believe that ole miss can win their bowl game and come out a preseason top-15 team next year?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
Nutt has done a great job, no doubt.
Al, Beaumont Texas
Beano: You said earlier you thought it was possible USC could get to 2 in the BCS poll if Oklahoma lost to Mizzou. Considering USC is 8 in the computer rankings and their only going to stay the same or drop once a 4-8 UCLA team is added to their equation how would that ever be possible. Isn't Texas the only viable candidiate.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
I did not say that. It would take a miracle. I think fans would like to see USC up there.
If Alabama loses do you yhink we could have two non bcs teams playing for the big one (utah and ball state)?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
No shot. Texas would be in the title game before either or those two, for starters.
can texas play oklahoma for the title
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
No because the Florida-Alabama winner will be in the title game for sure.
Bigwavedave (Annapolis, MD)
Who makes the rules regarding wearing white to away games and how does USC get out of it? I thought that was a given? Do you think USC will get to wear Red in the Rose Bowl if they are considered away?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Number one, the NCAA makes up the rule. If you violate it, you give up a timeout. If the two schools agree to it is good, The last time both wore non-white jerseys was 1982. I understand UCLA will call an early timeout to even things out. If both teams agree to the jerseys, there should be no penalty. The NCAA has bigger things to worry about than jersey colors.
Who do you think will most likely return next year, Joe Pa or Bobby Bowden?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Adam: (Raleigh, NC)
How good do you think Russell WIlson is and can be for NCSU...do you think he can move the wolfpack to a contender in the ACC? Or do you see Obrien starting Glennon who is more of a Matt Ryan type qb?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
NC State made a nice run at the end of the season, including a good win over Miami. O'Brien is a coach I have always liked. Wilson has potential at QB.
Cutt (Amarillo, TX)
Texas could of put up 60 their last 3 games but choose not to. They believe in sportsmanship.
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
There is some truth to that...good for Mack Brown.
clay, huntsville, alabama
Beano Who do you feel will be voted coach of the year and why?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
My guess is Nick Saban right now. Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech would be up there in my opinion. Whittingham at Utah and Peterson at Boise State would be high up too. Jeff Jagodzinski at BC has done an outstanding job considering Matt Ryan went to the NFL and their running game was questionable going into the season.
Ryan (Gainesville, FL)
Can Ole Miss beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl? What does it prove if they win?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Let's see if that turns out to be the matchup...Houston Nutt deserves plaudits too for winning at LSU and Florida. Also depends on the status of Harrell and Crabtree.
Dan (Norman OK)
I've heard it is supposed to be around 26 degrees for the Big 12 championship game at Arrowhead. Does this weather affect the OU offense in your opinion?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
A little bit. It could be tough for Bradford to throw. Playing a night game in KC in December is kinda ridiculous...it is like playing a night game in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving.
After last week a lot of people are claiming that the acc is a stronger conference than the sec. Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Oh no. Please. No way.
Beano, I'm a huge Irish fan. Any chance Notre Dame can get to a BCS game next year?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
Sure. Any time Notre Dame wins 10 games they will be in a BCS bowl. It is absolutely unreal that with all of the advantages Notre Dame has and they have not won a national championship since 1988. NBC's coverage of Notre Dame is nothing more than a four-hour infomercial.
Steven (New Orleans, LA)
Beano, Oklahoma vs. Texas today, who wins?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
I don't know. They played already and Texas won...what can I say.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
It is time to make my pick. Down to Atlanta for the SEC title game, also known as a national semifinal. Florida 31, Alabama 24. See you next week, same time, same .com channel.
