Pontiac Game Changing Performance

Davis will be chatting about the season as well as the Pontiac Game Changing Performances seen during the games.
Rece Davis (4:02 PM)
Rece Davis (4:03 PM)
Hey Everyone, Don't forget to vote for the Pontiac GCP this week. Thanks for sending in all your questions. Let's get started.
Rece Davis (4:04 PM)
The last 2 years he was a big surprise. I'm not surprised about this year, because he showed great talent last year. But, as far as athletics goes, he's a great all around athlete.
Rece Davis (4:06 PM)
I think they will be much improved. But, until someone proves that they can beat Va. Tech in the ACC, I'm from now forward picking Va. Tech. to win all ACC Championships.
zach KY
what do u think the final score of the fiesta bowl will be
Rece Davis (4:06 PM)
31-28
Adam(ATL)
Is Mark May crazy? Joe Flacco better than Matt Stafford?
Rece Davis (4:07 PM)
Joe Flacco is in the NFL. He's better now. Doesn't mean he'll be better next year. Mark's not crazy.
Mike (BR)
Do oyu see another rebuilding year for LSU next year?
Rece Davis (4:08 PM)
I don't think they rebuilt as much as they just underachieved. If Jefferson or Lee blossom at QB, LSU will be very good.
Seth
I realize this is unlikely, but if Utah crushes Alabama and Florida squeeks by Oklahoma, is there any chance Utah will be the AP National Champion? They would be undefeated and have beaten the same team the BCS champion would have defeated, but by more points.
Rece Davis (4:08 PM)
Seth, I understand where you're coming from, but I think the only team with a chance of claiming the AP in a split crown scenario is Texas.
Brad (Greensboro, NC)
Did UNC get snubbed? Shouldn't they have gone to a better bowl game this year?
Rece Davis (4:09 PM)
Not really. The Tar Heels didn't finish as strong as they would've liked, but all in all a very good season for Butch's team. They're going to be a force.
Will (Dallas, Tx)
Seriously, is Mike Leach going to be the coach at Auburn next year?
Rece Davis (4:10 PM)
I just saw Mike in the lobby of the Waldorf-Astoria. We're here for the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame dinner tomorrow night. I told my wife to go ask him. She didn't care.
Mark (LA)
Preseason top 5 teams for next year... assume the most likely situations... (stafford, moreno, bradford, etc leave) and remember tebow is likely staying and colt is staying...
Rece Davis (4:10 PM)
Mark, I love your enthusiasm. Let me get through this season first.
Jacob (Jupiter,Fl)
Do you think the Gators would have played a better game against Alabama if they had Percy Harvin, and Chris Rainey at full health?
Rece Davis (4:12 PM)
I think they played very well anyway. They were nearly perfect. Both teams were excellent. That was an exceptional football game.
Mike, C-bus, Ohio
Do the Buckeyes have a chance of Beating Texas Or do you ride them off like every other voter, or analyst out there, and do you think Pryor is a future Heisman Candadite?
Rece Davis (4:14 PM)
I'm not a voter, but I think they have a chance. I want to see Pryor improve as a passer.
Blair (Austin, TX)
So Rece, who gets your vote for the hiesman?
Rece Davis (4:16 PM)
I've really struggled with it. I edited my vote several times. It was down to McCoy and Tebow for me. I gave the edge to Tebow. I wish I could've split the vote in half.
Jordan (Richmond, Va)
Whats your take on the Orange Bowl? Who wins and how do they get it done?
Rece Davis (4:17 PM)
I think Cincy is playing with a lot of confidence but I'll give VT the edge based on experience on big stages and a much improved running game.
omha
nebraska did a big turn around this year. How do you feel the next season will be for the big red?
Rece Davis (4:18 PM)
Nebraska is returning to prominence. I think they'll use their finish to the season to catapult them back to the top of the big 12 north. They have to replace a QB too...just like the other good teams in that division...but I've got a feeling their D is going to take a big step forward next season.
Adam (ATL)
Who wins capital one bowl
Rece Davis (4:18 PM)
Georgia...if they're interested in being there...which is always a big question in these games.
Wade (Houston, TX)
Give me a break-Tebow and Mccoy over Bradford??? You guys really are TSPN!!!
Rece Davis (4:21 PM)
I knew I shouldn't have answered that question, but I try to be honest with you guys. The stats were a push. Both guys carried their teams at times. I love Colt McCoy's game and his demeanor and will be pleased for him if he wins the Heisman. I even had him first on my ballot before sending it. But I went over all of my criteria one more time. there was one intangible. I think he willed his team to a win over a great defense. I don't think colt had the opportunity to do that because he didn't face a great defense. As I said, i wish I could've split the vote...but Tebow's peformance against Alabama gave him the slightest of nods to me.
Darryl (Oakland, CA)
Rece, I saw you as the judge between Lou and Mark debating the Heisman. The arguement was between Tebow and McCoy. Am I lost here, I'm a Cal fan so I have no alliegence, but I can clearly see, CLEARLY, the award belongs to Sam Bradford, it really shouldn't be that close, how am I wrong, look at the numbers and compare!
Rece Davis (4:22 PM)
If it were only about numbers, you would be 10000000% correct. But to me, it's more than numbers. Sam in almost any other season would've gotten my vote. But I think McCoy and Tebow had slightly stronger arguments. Just my opinion. We'll see where the voters stand.
andrew ratts (memphis TN)
Is there a good chance that my Mississippi State bulldogs can pull Dan away from Fla.
Rece Davis (4:23 PM)
Dan Mullen wants to be a head coach and he'll be an outstanding one. State's offensive woes will be remedied quickly ( I didn't say immediately) if he is the guy they hire. He'd be an outstanding choice.
Nyambi (New York)
But the question is, why not Bradford?
Rece Davis (4:25 PM)
Nyambi, fair question. With the exception of the whirlybird, I thought Sam's argument was numbers, passing ability and distributing the football. All are great leaders. I gave the other two the edge because of running ability. McCoy led his team in rushing. Tebow had the marvelous moments in the biggest game of the year (at least the biggest game at the latest point in the season). It's close...and I believe all 3 are reasonable votes.
Mike(C-bus, Ohio_
Is Lou Holtz not your favorite analyst, he's funny to watch and intelligent and enthusiastic, can you comment on working with him.
Rece Davis (4:26 PM)
Coach is great to work with. He's become a very close friend. Lou, Mark and I are all very close. We can disagree passionately. We laugh at each other and at ourselves. Hopefully, you guys enjoy it. He's a great leader. He's always prepared and it's easy to see why he put together a hall of fame career.
Jose (Omaha, NE)
In regards to Sylvester Croom: I don't think he should've resigned this year, it was just a bad year. But I think a good fit for him would be Syracuse, or go Pro with the Detroit Lions. What are your thoughts Rece?
Rece Davis (4:28 PM)
Sly is one of the finest people I've ever met. I hope his resignation wasn't an impulsive move based on a devastating defeat to Ole Miss. He has a great positive influence on young men and certainly left Miss State in far, far better shape than he found it.
BennyBlanco-Bronx
Will Ole Miss' DL be able to make up for their lack of depth in the secondary against TT?
Rece Davis (4:28 PM)
I doubt it..but if they do, it will be the difference in the game. To me, you've boiled Ole Miss's chances to win down to one question.
TJ (Norman, OK)
I think too many people overlook the fact that Sam Bradford is the reason the offense is so good. I am tired of hearing in another offense with those stats blah blah blah. He is the one who runs the no huddle offense so well. Also, the whole McCoy has less talent around him, whatever. UT has top recruiting classes every year. Bradford makes our team what it is.
Rece Davis (4:32 PM)
TJ, you're right. he's great. I hate answering these questions because it makes it seem as if you don't have great admiration for the guy or guys you didn't vote in first place. Bradford is a brilliant QB and a remarkable athlete. Some seasons you scratch around to find one deserving candidate. Other years, you split hairs among 3 (or 4 or 5 if you include Harrell and Crabtree) most deserving guys. All 3 guys were great. I don't vote based on numbers alone. I voted Reggie Bush the year that Matt Leinart won it. I thought he was the best player in the game. I voted Bush again the next year too. He didn't necessarily have the best stats. Some of it is subjective. In fact, I guess all of it is.
Jonathan (Gainesville)
I was a little shocked to see how close Texas was to edging out Florida for a all Big 12 National Championship. What would have happened if this were the case? Would it have been the end of the BCS? Texas would have had a ton of thank you letters to write in binary code.
Rece Davis (4:33 PM)
would not have ended the bcs. It just would've been the way the ball bounces and I wouldn't have said it was unfair. The rules are set out before the season. Everyone plays by them. If it had fallen in Texas' favor, we would've gotten a great game. Remember College Football Final the night after the Texas-OU game? We all said, "fine with me if we see that game again." It was a classic.
Rob (Omaha, NE)
Did Buffalo's MAC championship get Turner Gill's name a boost on the coaching carousel? Care to comment on the work he's done up there?
Rece Davis (4:34 PM)
You bet it did Rob. It got Auburn's attention and a few others. He's a rising star and a class guy. They should build a statue to him at Buffalo. He turned a moribund program into a champion.
Justin (NY, NY)
Is this year's SEC the most overrated conference ever? Seriously, if you forgot the fact that voters were trying to match up teams in the National Championship Game from different conferences, and put Texas' resume next to Florida's, can you honestly say that games against Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss were tougher as Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Missouri?
Rece Davis (4:38 PM)
No..and you can watch the last two national title games if you don't believe it. Florida's win over Alabama is every bit as good a win as Texas' win over OU. Georgia, Ole Miss, Fla State, Miami...not much difference than Texas' wins. Ga win probably equals OK State win. Ole Miss is close to Mizzou. Both conferences are exceptional. The Big 12 was deeper this year. But I don't think it's accurate to say that either had a clear cut edge in schedule. Again, we're splitting hairs.
Joe (Boise)
Who wins in San Diego? Boise Stae or TCU
Rece Davis (4:38 PM)
I can't wait to see that game. That's like a 6th BCS game. Of all of the bowl games, that's easily in my top 4 "must see" games.
Chase (Norman)
When exactly did you write Bradford off for the Heisman? Was it after he won back-to-back Big XII Titles and put his team into the National Championship? or was it after he led his team to a 12-1 record and 5 straight 60+ point scoring efforts?
Rece Davis (4:39 PM)
I didn't write him off. I considered him carefully. I'm a big Sam Bradford fan. I only have one vote. I cast it as thoughtfully and carefully as I could.
Tommy, Birmingham
how many of these questions do you get in a matter of a minute?
Rece Davis (4:40 PM)
More than I can keep up with Tommy. We're in the 400's for the 40 min.
Eric (Myrtle Beach)
Do you believe PSU would be undefeated and in the national title game if they had a younger more aggressive coach like Meyer? When should Paterno hang it up?
Rece Davis (4:41 PM)
Urban isn't undefeated so I say no. Joe has done a great job this year. I think they'll give USC a real battle.
Blair (Austin, TX)
Rece, sorry for opening the never ending can of worms!!!! All were diserving this year.
Rece Davis (4:42 PM)
No worries, Blair. Obviously, I'd like everyone to be thrilled with my answers. But it doesn't work that way. I'm glad so many have great passion for their teams and our game. It's what makes this sport so special.
Grant (College Station, TX)
If Auburn was smart, shouldnt they stray away from a smaller program coach like Turner Gill, and throw all of their efforts to a more dominant name in much more prominent programs like defensive coordinator and head coach .....in waiting....... Will Muschamp?
Rece Davis (4:44 PM)
You trying to get rid of Muschamp, gig 'em? Will would be great. But if Texas is among the top 3 jobs in the country..and it's been promised to you, why would you bolt so soon. Three years from now, DeLoss Dodds might be understanding and say, "Will, I get it. We'll call you when Mack decides to retire." Three or four weeks after agreeing to that deal? That might burn a bridge you'd like to keep intact.
Darryl (Oakland, CA)
I think the country is asking you to reexamine your heisman vote. It's really not that close.
Rece Davis (4:45 PM)
The state of Florida isn't. But they've had election issues before, haven't they.
Owen, St. Paul
Why is it that ESPN has such a lovefest with the SEC and Texas? It's to the point I can only watch your show for 5-10 minutes at a time. I used to watch nothing but ESPN...now I watch the games and mute the pre-, post-, and halftime shows to avoid nausea. Oh, throw USC in there as well.
Rece Davis (4:47 PM)
There's a natural tendency to follow winners. The teams you mentioned have created the national storylines with their play. When the Big 10 cycles back on top, the question will be...why the love affair with Ohio State, Michigan--or judging from your location--hopefully, Minnesota. The teams you mentioned are the ones chasing the ultimate prize. Had Penn State beaten Iowa...can you even begin to fathom the attention Joe Pa's quest for one more title would've gotten?
Kevin (jacksonville)
Hey Rece! Happy Holidays! How/why do you deal with the people who disrespect or are aggressive toward you on these chats? Don't they have anything better to do? Oh, and what about that Holiday Bowl, eh?
Rece Davis (4:47 PM)
I think people are just passionate about their points Kevin. I just try to be honest..give my opinion and respect their right to disagree. Hopefully, we all enjoy the dialogue.
Jacob (Jupiter,Fl)
Who do you think will be a better NFL running back Jevon Ringer or Knowshon Moreno?
Rece Davis (4:48 PM)
that's always hard to say, but I think Moreno has a little more burst. Ringer is incredibly durable. That will serve him well in the NFL.
Alex (Tuscaloosa)
Talking about the Auburn coaching search, why haven't I heard Gary Patterson from TCU's name mentioned? He is exactly the type of coach who could bring the Auburn Tigers where they want to be, more importantly, he can bring them there in the style they are looking for. Defense first, steady offense.
Rece Davis (4:49 PM)
You are exactly right. Patterson would be a perfect fit there.
John, Birmingham, AL
What do you think about Auburn rolling Toomers Corner after Florida defeated Alabama in the SEC championship game?
Rece Davis (4:50 PM)
I think it's always better to celebrate your accomplishments rather your rival's shortcomings. But I guess that level of disdain is what makes the game so intense.
rick (columbus, OH
do you think terrele pryor can compete for the heisman in his junior and maybe senior years
Rece Davis (4:51 PM)
Sure. He's electric and will get a lot of attention. Shore up the passing and he'll be ready to go.
Levi (Boise,ID)
Sorry forgot to include Name and city. Rece, no way you are going to answer my last question huh? You didn't even answer the last BSU question of who you thought would win the game. Objective host or fence rider?
Rece Davis (4:52 PM)
What was your question? I can't make a pick on that game at this time. So for now, let's go with objective host.
Tim (Class)
Will Star Jackson or AJ McCarron be Bama's QB next year? And how effective do you think they'll be. JPW played wonderfully this year, BTW. Roll Tide!
Rece Davis (4:53 PM)
Hard to say, Tim. Star Jackson has gotten a lot of accolades, but the development of one of those two guys will be the key to Alabama staying on top. I seriously doubt McCarron would be ready as a true freshman next year.
spud (Ponca city)
Do you think Oklahoma has a chance against Florida?
Rece Davis (4:55 PM)
Absolutely. I thought they had the best team in the country coming into the season. I've been a little disappointed in their defense, but I certainly believe they can beat anyone. that's the best offense in college football. They can spread it out...and pound you with the power running game. No other team is so diverse offensively.
Vincent(Tulsa, Oklahoma)
Baylors "Griffin" is a name the nation might here next year for hiesman, Is baylor a big enough name to support a hiesman contender?
Rece Davis (4:56 PM)
got to win some more games. Robert Griffin is a program changer. What a great young QB. He's going to put up crazy numbers and have dozens of "wow" moments too.
Zaid (Austin)
Wow, you voted for Tebow?? Unreal, NO WAY HE HAD A BETTER YEAR THAN MCCOY!...His numbers are mediocre, this just shows how everyone at ESPN is obsessed with Tebow. Mccoy has NO superstars around him like Tebow has, and yet Mccoy still put up SICK numbers. Its a flat out robbery.
Rece Davis (4:56 PM)
It's only one vote, Zaid...and Colt got points on this ballot too.
Phillip
Rece. Sorry to keep asking. But if Texas had decided to win games by 50 points instead of 30, like OU and Florida, Would they be playing in miami on jan 8?
Rece Davis (4:56 PM)
A simpler way...catch the interception or take a better angle on Crabtree's catch. It was close.
RJ
Rece, cmon...answer my question: why the interviews with meyer AND tebow and nothing from stoops or anyone else from OU last night?
Rece Davis (4:58 PM)
We had Bob on from his news conference. The invitation was extended. He wanted to do it, but from what I understand, he had a logistical issue and couldn't join us. That's all I have. Bob Stoops is welcome on my shows anytime. But not as welcome as Mike Leach who might tell a pirate story or give a lasting breakfast analogy.
Alex (Tuscaloosa)
Do you think Julio Jones could make a run at the Heisman trophy if he stays through his senior year? thanks Rece, good show
Rece Davis (4:59 PM)
Biletnikoff is more likely. Alabama has to find a QB to get him the ball more often. By the way, he is now officially a one name guy. Julio. No need for a last name. There's just one of him.
Adam (ATL)
Rece, Do you agree with teams running the score up like OU and FL
Rece Davis (5:01 PM)
I'm not really saying that they did, but here's my take. I don't care how much you score as long as the starters aren't the ones doing it in a 40 point game. Anything in the first half is fair game. Third qtr, clear the bench when the lead gets out of hand. It's ok to let the backups play the game full speed and pitch it around. They need the experience. They work hard. let them have some fun. If the other team doesn't like it, they should play better defense.
Phillip
Rece. That was a cop out of an answer. So basically bama and Texas had to be perfect. And if OU is in the game over texas, why isnt bama in the game over Florida?
Rece Davis (5:03 PM)
Fair point, Phillip. I was just saying that an easier path to ensuring a spot was to make one more play. I didn't mean to disparage Texas. Guys, you've been great all season. We'll do more of these at some point during the bowl season. don't forget the big money is up for grabs now. $100K for the Pontiac Gamechanging Performance of the Year. Vote...and keep voting when eligible to get your favorite play in the mix. Thanks again...and have a great Holiday season.
