Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. Sorry there was a slight delay. Penn State fans ambushed us and complained about 1969. Penn State did not get the shaft...they voted to play a team that wasn't ranked in the top 3. I am sick and tired of Penn State fans complaining about 1969. They have a right to complain about 1994.
Alexa (Gainesville, FL)
So tell us, who got your Heisman vote? And how do you think the vote will pan out? I've heard that the second place votes could have a big deal on the outcome. Thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
I voted in the following order: 1-Tebow 2-McCoy 3-Bradford I feel Tebow will win. I can't remember a year where if any of the top three would win, nobody could complain. I wish we had better candidates running the senate the way we have depth in this year's Heisman. Maybe we can go to Illinois and buy the Heisman Trophy.
Matt (Miami, FL)
Beano, do you see the Gator defense holding OU under 40?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
I will touch on that game on January 7th. Before the season began I picked USC and Florida to play for the national title. Ivan Maisel had Oklahoma and Georgia. I picked USC to win it all.
Eric (Oklahoma City)
Lately, it seems to me that a lot of people have on ESPN have been pushing Tim Tebow for the Heisman. Do you think Bradford might be getting snubbed because of the Big 12 championship disaster?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
I picked Tebow based on his merit. I have nothing against Bradford. I don't think the Big 12 title situation has anything to do with this. If I have a complaint about Oklahoma, it is that coach Stoops sometimes runs it up too much. I have no problem with Oklahoma playing for the national championship. Oklahoma did nothing wrong, they got to the Big 12 title game based on the rules of the conference.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
How is it that Notre Dame beat no one and lost to Syracuse but they get to go to Hawaii? You can't tell me there is justice when stuff like that happens.
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
Because they are NOTRE DAME. They get all of the breaks. Where have you been? They have their own TV network, and has the nerve to make excuses for not winning the national title in 20 years. Maybe they'll finally win a bowl.
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
By the way, nine teams with 6-6 records were extended bowl bids.
Travis C. (Lake Highlands)
Beano, does O.J. still get to vote for the Heisman, or do convicts lose the right to vote?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
A superb question. One of the best questions you have ever had. I have no idea. I suggest he gets ballot out soon because the mail there is slow.
mark Carney, OK
do you think the sports media wil give McCoy the Heisman because they thought he got cheated as a payback against Bradford? Bradford is clearly the best player in the country. Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
You are from Oklahoma. I can't speak for others but I never gave it a thought.
How much real coaching does Bowden and Paterno do these days?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
They do make the big decisions. If things go wrong they get the blame. How much coaching do the big-time coaches do? They oversee, they do make the big decisions on whether to go for it on fourth down, kick a field goal, etc.
the only bowl eligible teams left out were ark st, bowling green, louisianna-lafayette and san jose st....that's why nd was picked.
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Thanks. Bowling Green was bowl eligible and it still fired the coach.
Beano, any chance Penn State does what it did this year with Oregon State and drops one of the patsies from their schedule next year and adds a real team?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
Their non-conference schedule is a disgrace. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Gator (Suffolk, VA)
I'm reading comments from southern sports writers listing Tebow with Herschel Walker and Archie Manning as the best players from the south in the last 50 years. Do you agree?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I think Tebow is one of the greatest players in the history of college football, plain and simple.
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
By the way, speaking of Florida, reports out of Gainesville say Dan Mullen, the Florida assistant, will become the new coach at Mississippi State.
Beano, do you believe the coaching situation has gotten totally out of control? Fans demand loyalty(Sabon and Petrino), but show none (Fulmer)
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
I think fans are unrealistic. It is more so than years ago. We have the internet and talk radio so the pressure on coaches is a lot different. It is win or else, period.
Brutus (Columbus, OH)
Why is there not an annual rivalry between Ohio State and Cincinnati or at least try to build one?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
You have to ask the two schools. I don't think Ohio State wants Cincinnati to become a power.
Beano (Bethesda, MD)
Beano: Syracuse was legitimate when PSU scheduled them. They play Alabama in 2010/11, UVa and Nebraska down the road. That's way better than many many teams. To call it a disgrace and shaming PSU is a bit of a stretch. Plus you're just repeating yourself. Call out TTU or FSU's TWO 1-AA teams or LSU's no-BCS teams. PSU should commended for making a move to get a better game this year.
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Florida State plays Florida every year. Texas Tech plays Oklahoma and Texas every year. I stand by my comments.
No right to complain about 1994 either, Beano. Nebraska was a better team.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
OK, I can see that. I am not saying Nebraska was the better team or not. I am saying Penn State had a legitimate complaint. In 1969, Penn State made its decision on which bowl to go to.
brandon (huntsville, al)
Who will be Auburn's head coach come Jan. 1st? Thoughts on T. Gill as a possibility?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
Good question. I am not sure. I figure a coach has to be very careful to take that job. The booster club is very unreasonable. The way Tommy Tuberville was treated was an absolute disgrace.
Will (San francisco, CA)
You mentioned Stoops running up the score. Do you think it helped or hurt Bradford's Heisman chances for him to be hurling it downfield while Tebow sat on his bench rooting on his backup?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
I think it might have hurt him a little bit. It did not influence my vote. If he wins, obviously I am wrong.
Ryan (Salt Lake City)
Do you think Utah will get any respect if they play Alabama close or do you think it people will just use it as another excuse to exclude non-BCS teams in the future if Utah loses?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I think so. Utah went undefeated, beat good teams like BYU and TCU. Alabama will be down a little bit and will eventually get better. It is only a matter of time before the Tide wins the national title.
Scott Upstate NY
Beano, I heard all day Monday on sports radio from different people, Mike and Mike being one of them, trying to make the arguement that it should be Texas and Oklahoma in the title game. Silly! Do you agree?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Yes, it is silly. Mike Greenberg grew up in NY and went to Northwestern so he doesn't understand football. I was surprised by Golic since he knows football. If their point is true, why is Florida favored over Oklahoma? The people in Vegas usually know what they are doing.
I think the Illinois governor put OJ's Heisman vote up for auction.
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Very good. I give you credit for that one. You should be writing for Jay Leno or picking the top 10 for Letterman.
Tommy (Los Angeles, CA)
Any chance of USC getting at least a share of the national title if all the BIG 12 SOUTH teams lose in their bowl games and USC blows out Penn State? USC beats Penn State who beat Ohio State who beats Texas who beat Oklahoma. Hence, USC's opponent is better than Florida's opponent in the BCS National Championship Game. Split the national title!!!
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Have you ordered your season tix for the Pirates?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
They did not get Sabathia, so that leaves me out. Do they play the Royals in interleague? I want to go to that series. Apparently the Royals will have an improved pitching staff.
Matthew (Norman, OK)
Beano-Can my team get a little respect? We played one bad game against a top-3 team, still should have won that game & now we are an underdog to Harvin-less Gator squad? Should I just guarantee it now?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Number one, Oklahoma is in the title game...what are you talking about RESPECT. Harvin may be back for the title game, we will have to see.
Charlie Weis (South Bend, IN)
Beano-i know your a fan of ours, but do you actually see us winning in Hawaii, and do they make lei's big enough for me to wear too? Also is there any chance i get this top linebacker recruit (Manti Te'o) away from USC while we're here?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
I don't know. Notre Dame wants to win a bowl game since it last won one in 1993--vs Texas A&M. It puzzles me that Notre Dame hasn't even come that close in years. However in 1993, Notre Dame should have had half of the national title.
Beano, if you ask me the BCS system has done nothing but make 1 important bowl game, and the rest irrelevant! Everybody says no playoff because it would hurt the bowls but they mean nothing now with the BCS! It should just go back to the way it was let the voters decide whether or not they make a mistake, like they did in 94 with PSU.
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
There is a lot of truth to that. I cannot understand why there isn't a plus one game. You have to remember, in my observations watching college sports for 52 years, the leaders sometimes think slowly. I have seen molasses move faster.
Just so you know Beano- before the big 12 championship game, OU had only scored a total of 34 4th quarter points, which is an average of 3.7 points in the 4th. Far from "running up the score". Get informed...quick.
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
Throwing the ball when up 40...hmm.
Which bowl game are you most excited to watch this year?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
Penn State-USC. Of the non-BCS, Georgia Tech-LSU, Michigan State-Georgia, Boise State-TCU. Oklahoma State-Oregon is not a bad game.
Penn State fans howling about '94 is absurd. The Huskers were robbed up in 1982 by one of the worst calls in the history of football when they played Penn State
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
Look, first in 1994, I am not saying Nebraska should not be the national champion. I just said their was a legitimate gripe. As for 1982, Nebraska has a right to complain about the officiating.
Daniel: (Bluefield, WV):
Beano if the Big East goes 5-0 in bowl games (again I might add) is that number deflated because 3 wins are against ACC teams...Including the BCS game...??
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
No matter what the Big East does, it is the weakest conference.
Garrick (Boise, ID)
Beano, Boise State vs. Utah... who wins?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
They don't play...
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Utah would be favored though.
If it does all that the big east is still weaker then the pac 10?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
That is obvious.
Jason (Dallas, TX)
Beano, where do you think Graham Harrel places in the Heisman race amongst the other 3 competitors? How can so many people have had Graham on top for 3 weeks and one loss to a very good OU team knock out everything Harrel has done? Doesn't make much sense.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I think Harrell will finish fourth. This season the Heisman race seemed to change week after week.
Beano, were you the first guest on KDKA?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
Speaking of Notre Dame... I feel they were really wrong in the way they treated Ty, he was never given the opportunity Weis has. It's just a shame! What's your take?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
First of all, the criticism of Notre Dame's handling of the Willingham firing is the first time the alumni got involved. The vote was 4-3 to fire Willingham. One of the reasons he was fired was he did not do a good job in recruiting. Did he get a raw deal? He probably should have received another year but it was obvious they were not going to be outstanding. It is unfair for the ND fans to say the firing was justified because of the job he did at Washington. I've been told that when he got out there the cupboard was bare.
What do you think about the Sagarin rating of the ACC as the strongest conference? They had a winning record against the SEC and undefeated against the Big 12. Sure they don't have any national title contenders but the middle and bottom of a conference also contribute to its strength.
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
That makes as much sense as the Literary Digest in 1936 picking Alf Landon to beat FDR. After the election, it went out of business.
Do you see Jon Gruden coaching in college some day?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
From all indications he wants to stay in the pros. I would not rule it out though.
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
I will see you next week, then I will take Christmas eve off and then return for New Year's Eve...our own rocking!
