Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
It's great to be here. We have some good games coming up. The playoff situation is still up for grabs.
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
Let's get rolling with your NFL questions!
Rick Congleton, Richmond, KY
You had the right pick Monday night, can you do it again tonight?
Keith Kidd (1:04 PM)
Hey bud, it's great to have you being part of the show. Make sure you check out my Monday Night preview show that should be up later today at the PodCenter. A prediction for that Monday night game is an easy one.
chauncey (teaneck)
Who has the best defense in the NFL?
Keith Kidd (1:05 PM)
Statistically, Pittsburgh. We're going to find out. They're going against the second best in the Ravens on Sunday. I wouldn't want to be Joe Flacco or Big Ben on Monday morning. Could be a little sore.
Joseph (NYC)
Hey Keith what is the deal with Vernon Gholston ? I know some considered him a slight project prior to him being drafted but he has had zero impact this year. When do you see him making an impact if ever?
Keith Kidd (1:07 PM)
Obviously he's been a huge disappointment this year. As you can see, the Jets still have some concerns about their 4-man pass rush. They're going to have to get a lot more aggressive with their pass rush. The Broncos and how about the 49ers? Unbelievable.
Espo (NYC)
Do you see the 49ers finishing a respectable 8-8 this year? Hopefully that can turn the tides and translate into winning the division again in the near future.
Keith Kidd (1:08 PM)
Espo, I didn't expect this team to be 3-3 under Mike Singletary. It's obvious to me that they've bought into what he's done as a coach and this team. They're going to have a difficult time winning on Sunday against the Dolphins. They still have a chance at 7-9.
Mark (Bangor, PA)
Kidder, the knock on Marty has always been not winning the SB. As bad as the Browns have been since their return, the playoffs would be welcome. Do you think Marty will be the Browns coach next year?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
I really don't know what's going to happen in Cleveland. It's obvious that Romeo or Phil won't be there next year. It looks to me that Crennel will be the odd man out. However, if you look at San Diego, the one thing that's missing on that team right now, which I think Marty did a good job of, is mental toughness.
Keith, NJ
Hey Keith! Great name! With ATL projected to be under the cap this offseson by 25-30 million and in desperate need to add another Pass Rusher to compliment Abraham. Is it possible they can sign Peppers or Suggs and shift Jaamal Anderson to DT? I would love to get Peppers!
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
The Falcons have their franchise QB in Matt Ryan. That will allow them to go a lot of different directions in the offseason. Dimitroff hasn't even put his stamp on this organization yet, which is pretty scary for the rest of the NFC South. Mike Smith has done a great job of coaching this season and getting guys to believe in the organization and their roles. A lot of positive things for Atlanta.
Alex (Charlottesville, VA)
As a Steeler's fan I always respect Baltimore and worry when we play them. But are the Ravens overrated? The Skins could have comeback if their offense was not so lack luster.
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
No, the Ravens are not overrated. This is a team that has a great defense, but the offense has exceeded my expectations. How can you not love the development of Joe Flacco and what Cam Cameron has done with this offense. I think the Ravens have a great chance, if they can beat the Steelers and get in the playoffs, they can do some damage.
hondo (oakland)
Keith, one local scribe has called Jamarcus Russell a bust. Early indications are he might be right. Your take?
Keith Kidd (1:14 PM)
I wouldn't call him a bust right now. They need to get with him in the offseason and get his confidence back. He's a talented players. But they need to get him some playmakers. They need to get someone in there that can develop QBs.
Alex (Charlottesville)
Yeah it was like watching Big Ben in '04 he is a definite threat now and in the furture. Thanks Keith!
Josh (Indy)
Is Marvin Harrison done?
Keith Kidd (1:14 PM)
No, I don't think so.
archie (minneapolis)
do you think pat and kevin williams will play the rest of season
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
Great question. It looks like it will be a week to week thing right now, until the courts can rule and let it play out. I just wish the league could have found a way to do it quieter and somehow found a way to impose the suspensions next season and now have it impact this season.
PT (Franklin, NC)
Keith, here's a prediction for you to make, not whether or not the Raiders will win versus the Patriots, but will they score, or better yet get a first down?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
Hey PT, the Raiders have 13 TDs on the season and one in the first half. How can anyone be critical of the defensive side of the ball? You're talking about a defense that probably averages 75-80 plays a game. Are you kidding me?
Jason (San Jose, CA)
Hey Keith - How about some help me with a fantasy pick? Brees vs. the Bears or Warner vs. the Vikings.
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
I would go with Warner vs. the Vikings. The elements in Chicago tonight scare me. It's different when you're throwing a heavier football. It's harder when you're in the elements. Plus the Saints are a dome team and are 1-5 on the road.
john (cincinnati)
are the redskins done considering the turmoil or will they win last 3 games to make playoffs??
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
Yeah, you can pretty much put a fork in them. Their offense is totally ineffective right now. But their defense is going to keep them in every game. You have to like the way London Fletcher has played this season.
Carlito (Miami)
Keith the Dolphins have been a shocker this year for sure. Do you think we will put out the division if we go into the final weekend tied with the Jets? I think winning there will be very difficult but I get the feeling Chad beating the Jets would be a storybook ending.
Keith Kidd (1:19 PM)
I think the Dolphins are in the best position to win the division right now, because they have the best defense. But it's not going to be easy. The pressure in this division is all on the Jets. The Patriots have the easiest schedule, but they are depleted due to injuries.
Kev (NYC)
Giants or Cowboys?
Jake (VA Beach)
Got a pick for Sunday night? Big one in Big D
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
Great question. For whatever reason, I like the Giants in this game. The Cowboys just haven't been a December team. Tony Romo, it's on your shoulders.
Adam (Jersey)
That was ugly for Tampa... Do you think it was an abberration? I can't see a Monte Kiffin defense consistently looking so overhwhelmed
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
What a great way for Tampa to get back on the field. I think you'll see a much better run defense this weekend after getting embarrassed on Monday night. This Tampa defense made Matt Ryan look like a rookie QB the last time they met.
Josh (VA)
Fact of Fiction: Colt Brennan starts a game for the Redskins before seasons end?
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
I think it's fiction. This franchise is committed to Campbell.
Mike Toledo
Hey double K, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Being a Browns fan I am at a loss for words this season. I have 3 very big questions for you about the Browns: First, do they get rid of Romeo and savage if they can't get Cowher? Second can Braylon be fixed? Lastly, who do the Browns go after in the draft? Would they go after a LB or is it possible for them to draft someone like Beanie Wells now that Lewis is getting older?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
1) No, they won't get Cowher. 2) He's too talented to not get fixed, but they need to get his eyes checked in the offseason. 3) They don't have too many picks, but an impact LB would be huge for this team or another impact pass rusher.
adam (houston.)
Can you show some love for Steve Slaton?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
Absolutely. Slaton has had a great year. If you're a Houston fan, if you can keep Schaub healthy, this is an explosive offense next season. They just need some help on the defensive side.
Bill (NJ)
Will Mike Singletary be the head coach of the 49ers next year?
Keith Kidd (1:25 PM)
Bill, the 49ers organization is kind of a mystery to me. They still have to go through an interviewing process when the season ends. But to me, he makes the most sense right now. Unless the season completely unravels in the next three weeks.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
How does Green Bay get back on track?
Keith Kidd (1:26 PM)
They get back on track by addressing the defensive side of the ball in the offseason. They have some tough decisions to make on the DC and the scheme they run. They have to tinker with the OL a little bit. You have to be excited about the development of Rodgers.
Bills Fan
Keith, Do you think if the Buffalo Bills offered Bill Cowher a solid contract(can use the Toronto $) and the GM title(since the Bills dont have one)? Do you think he would be interested? The Bills do have talent on both sides of the ball!
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
I don't see Cowher a fit in Buffalo. I don't think it's attractive to him because of the uncertainty that surrounds ownership and where this team will play in future years. A bigger markey like New Yrok might be more attractive to him. He'll have the chocie of jobs, it's just a matter if he wants to coach again or not.
Dave (Queens, NY)
Is Hasselbeck done in Seattle? What else do you think they'll need to do to get back to their winning ways next season?
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
Great question. I would not be surprised if Tim Ruskell, the GM tries to move Hasselbeck this offseason.
Shawn (Jamestown, NY)
What is wrong with the Bills? I really though this was their year after going 5-1.
Keith Kidd (1:29 PM)
They have not rhythm on offense right now. Obviously, we're seeing the growing pains of Trent Edwards. Even though they have a big OL, it's not very physical in the running game. Teams have taken away Lee Evans and others haven't stepped up in the passing game.
Brandon (Indiana)
Does Chicago use Matt Forte too much?
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
Nope. If they did not have Matt Forte, where would this offense be right now? I'm still amazed at how good this rookie class has been, especially at the RB position.
Steiny (NYC)
What are your thoughts on Portis and Zorn?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
Things like this irritate me. This stuff needs to be left behind closed doors. Once it happens, everybody on the team looks to see how the head coach reacts. It's not a good thing when you're tying to build chemistry. I think Portis is an extremely talented player and was extremely frustrated on how he was being used. But this needs to be kept in house.
Dan (Buffalo, NY)
Kidder, I'm surious as to why you don't think the Browns will get Cowher. They seem to have the resources and the need.
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
Without a doubt, the Browns have everything you want, as far as working there. Great facilities. Great stadium. An owner that's willing to spend. A passionate fan base. I don't think he'll go there for the simple fact that he left Pittsburgh. Out of respect for the Rooney family, he wouldn't go there.
Ryan (America's Finest City)
Is Denver in trouble this weekend or do you think they can continue the trend of playing great on the road as big underdogs?
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
This is a very intriguing game. Carolina is coming off a big game on Monday night and we don't know what to expect from the Broncos. I think Shanahan has done a great coaching job, in spite of the injuries. Six RBs on injured reserve? Are you kidding me?
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
Get your nominations in for the Matt Millen Award.
Zac (MN)
Keith, I know you are a big Tarvaris Jackson fan (ha ha). Can he lead the Vikings into the playoffs? And if he does, that doesn't mean the VIkings won't go after a veteran qb in the offseason (like McNabb) does it?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
Jackson is going to have to lead them into the playoffs. Look for their gameplan to be more centered around AD and Taylor. What Jackson needs to do is manage the game around Jackson. This is another great game between them and the Cardinals. That Cardinals passing attack is going to put pressure on the Vikings defense.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Matt Millen Award nominee: That guy that dumped the water cooler on himself!
Mark (Orlando)
Are the Colts back or is they just benefiting from a soft schedule.
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
Peope don't want to say this, but I will -- Manning has had an MVP season. He's my choice right now. If there's one player who has positioned his team where they are now, it's Peyton Manning.
Luis (SB, CA)
Matt Millen Award: Jerry Jones for questioning Barber's toughness.
Adam (Chicago)
Who do you like tonight? It's basically an elimination game.
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
I like the Bears at home because of the elements and the weather.
Jason (Bmore)
A little DPOY talk. I can understand Haynesworth, and how he dominates, but Harrison brings it every snap, and is the more dynamic player. He plays every single snap, and despite this might not being a defensive situation, he plays special teams and is 2nd in tackles!
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
Those players are well deserving. I think it's Haynesworth, because of all the attention he gets on the inside and that helps the outside.
Ben (Atlanta)
Today is the one year anniversary of that slime ball Petrino bolting the Falcons for Fayetteville, AR. As a Falcons fan, it is a day to celebrate! Where would we be today if that had not happened? No Matt Ryan, No Thomas Dimitroff in the front office, no Mike Smith, and likely no winning record. Happy Petrino Day Falcon Fans!
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
Amen. Great call.
Jim Zorn (DC)
Clinton Portis for the Millen Award
Jeff (indy)
Is the Colts D good enough to get the Colts to the Superbowl. I agree with you on Manning. The Colts running game has been bad. Manning has been great.
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
Here's my answer to that: it's better than the defense a few years back when everyone said it wasn't a defense to get them to the Super Bowl and they did. Once this team gets to the playoffs, they're a dangerous team.
John (Watertown, NY)
Matt Millen: Portis-like you said, those type of issues need to dealt with in house not on national radio!
Kev (NYC)
How big of a factor will Hester be tonight?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
The thing about Hester is that you always have to fear him in the kicking game. Based on that Saints secondary and the way Ron Turner has used those two TE packages, will create some mismatches for Hester tonight.
Don (GA)
Matt Millen award: Easy pick - BUrress for shooting himself in leg Just like Millen seemed to be shooting the Lions in leg.
Keren (Maui)
Second the Jerry Jones nomination for the Millen award. After all it is named for a crazy GM and crazy team president.
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
Now for the Matt Millen Award....based on the 'Nation has said and what Buzzmaster has accumulated, it's Jerry Jones. To make it more exciting we've changed over to a voting practice.
Todd (Beantown)
Bill Belicheck Vs Tom Brady...Who should really be getting the credit? Look at the "Genius"'s record without Tom compared to with Tom...
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
I don't think we need to question Bill Belichick's coaching abilities, based on what we've seen this year. To me, he's had an unbelievable year. He's proven to everybody what kind of coach he is. He's done it without his franchise QB and all the injuries they've had.
Mike (Florida)
Has Hester's offensive contributions, hindered his return capabilities?
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
It could be. But when you play the Bears, you preach all week that you have to be sound with your coverage schemes. I think teams have done a better job of not kicking the ball down the middle of the field and not giving him a lot of space for returns.
Ken (Scottsdale, AZ)
Keith, why is it so difficult for the National Media to just accept the fact that the Cardinals are a good team? 9 out of their 13 opponents have winning records. They demolished the Dolphins and beat ESPN's own Dallas Cowboys. There was never this much uproar when Seattle was winning a weak NFC West.
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
Ken, congrats to the Bidwell family and the Arizona Cardinals. Regardless of the division, the Cardinals have had a great year. With the new stadium this team has a new identity as far as homefield advantage in the desert now. The key is can the Cardinals build off this success and be the team that the Seahawks have been in this division?
Ryan (Houston)
Matt Millen award goes to the BCS system. Thanks to it, USC & Texas, two teams who could take it in a playoff, will just have to beat up on Penn St. & Ohio St.
Chet (LA)
In your opinion: Will Los Angeles ever get an NFL team?
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
Anything's possible. It's a great TV market and that's what makes it so attractive for the league and the fans. A lot of history there.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
What is your upset special this week?
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
Tampa Bay over Atlanta and Minnesota over the Cardinals and Giants over the Cowboys.
Joe NY
San D or Kansas City this week?
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
San Diego.
Nick St. Paul, MN
Who should I start Randy Moss or Marques Colston?
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
Randy Moss against his former team, baby!
Brandon (Indiana)
Who throws for more yards tonight in the cold Brees or Orton
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
Brees.
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
But the Bears will run for more yards.
jason (Boston)
Keith, any way Romeo Crennel finds his way back to New England as an assistant?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
Crennel is so respected by people in the NFL that he will have a lot of opportunites for a lot of different assistant coaching jobs if he's not back in Cleveland.
Mike (Buffalo)
Kyle Orton had a decent game last week. Is he back to his pre-injury form or was he playing above his ability early this season?
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
I think Orton has shown a lot of growth in his game this season. The Bears need to get some more playmakers at WR and make some adjustments on the OL.
Marc (philly)
Is it fair to say that Westbrook should be an MVP canidate? I mean i know he missed some games, but look at the difference and it just further proves the point...he is the eagles offense!
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
Great point. He has played like the best player in the NFL over the last two games. If he would have been healthy all season, the Eagles wouldn't have had the struggles they've had. But Andy Reid needs to stay committed to running the football and not get pass happy.
Luis (SB, CA)
KK, let me just say that you'll be setting yourself up for the Matt Millen award if you ever miss a chat. Great work today
Steve (Syracuse)
More likely to be gone after the season: Zorn or Portis?
Keith Kidd (1:54 PM)
I don't think either. But if I had to lean toward one or the other, I'd lean toward Zorn over Portis.
Ryan (Denver)
Is Cutler at least in some MVP talks that you've heard? He deserves at least a look for what he's done this year.
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
You make a great point. Even though his name has died down a bit. The way he started the season was amazing. If you're a Broncos fan, you have your franchise QB. This team needs to address the defensive side of the ball.
Kevin (theberg)
Baltimore or Pittsburg?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Baltimore.
Brandon (Indiana)
This was my first time participating on your show it was great thanks Keith GO BEARS!
Ryan (Bmore)
Ravens playoff chances??
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
I like their playoff chances. Remember what the Giants played a year ago. Pittsburgh a few years ago and the Patriots a few, few years ago -- all you have to do is get in the playoffs and anything can happen.
Mike (Florida)
Why did Cam Cameron not have success in Miami but seems to have turned around the Ravens offense even with all the injuries.
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
Some guys are great coordinators and not head coaches. It's a great question. It's a mystery to me.
Brett (Myrtle Beach, SC)
What can we expect out of Pierre Thomas tonite vs. Da Bears. He lit them up late last year. Repeat performance???
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
You can expect him to be the power, inside runner tonight while Reggie Bush is the outside runner in the Saints attack.
Matt (Houston)
True, Houston just needs some help on D, but they've used five 1st rounders on the line and got a pro-bowler and 4 fringe players. They don't scout very well on that side of the ball.
Terry (DC)
Glad to see you picked the Ravens but how will they stop Harrison? Our LT will get wasted.
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
They'll put a TE to his side or they'll use backs. They'll obviously have players that will be responsible for doubling him or chipping him. The key for the Ravens will be running the ball. If they're efficient running the ball, they can put the Steelers on their heals a bit.
JC (TN)
How can you go through a 1 hour chat without mentioning the team with the best record in the NFL?
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
JC, you're the first Tennessee question, so congratulations. We did talk about them when we talked about Albert Haynesworth. But I agree with you, this team is having a phenomenal year and it seems like no one cares. But they should. Everything in the AFC playoffs goes through Tennessee.
Keith Kidd (2:01 PM)
Enjoy the games on Sunday, they should be awesome as we start to get close to the playoffs. Make sure you check out my Monday Night Football preview show. Have a fun and safe weekend. See you here next week!
