Matthew Barnaby (3:08 PM)
We are all set. Look forward to answering as many questions as we can. A lot of great things happening in the NHL this week. So let's get to it!
what are your thoughts on the hawks, do they have a chance this year or should i sit back, enjoy and watch a team grow to become a powerhouse in the near future
Matthew Barnaby (3:10 PM)
The Hawks are my favorite team to watch on any given night. They have a lot of great youth, they give you your money's worth everytime they take the ice. Dale Talon has done a great job assembling this team, but I still think they are a year or two away from being a seriosu contender.
Who will be the better pro Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane?
Matthew Barnaby (3:11 PM)
That's like asking me who is better: Overchkin or Crosby. They are both and will be both fantastic players for a lot of years. I do not think you can compare the two, as they play two totally different styles. Patrick Kane will end up with more points, but Jonathan Toews is a much more complete player. Pretty lucky to have them both.
Joe Tool (West Hempsead, NY)
Pens playing real flat lately. Afraid guys like Satan and Fedotenko just weren't the answer. What do you think?
Matthew Barnaby (3:13 PM)
They definitely were not their first option. After not being able to sign Marian Hossa they turned to these two. You will see flashes of scoring from both, but you will alse see a lack of grit from both as well. As they get into the playoffs this could pose a problem as it is much tougher in the playoffs.
Christie (Oklahoma City)
Any chance Sean Avery ends up in Tampa Bay? That could light a spark!
Matthew Barnaby (3:14 PM)
He's definitely has a better chance of landing in Tampa than he does of pulling a Stars jersey back over his head. His days are numbered in Big D and with the amount of roster moves Tampa has already made this year, it would not surprise me. Could be good for a team needing to sell tickets. Maybe he can have his own dressing room.
Goldie ( The Mozz)
Are the Islanders making the right decision by not allowing Bailey to play in the world juniors?
Matthew Barnaby (3:16 PM)
The theory behind it is, if he is playing a lot, you keep him on your NHL roster. If he is only playing a few minutes a night the experience of World Juniors will help him out a lot. Bailey is getting a chance to play and I think it is the right decision to keep him in the NHL.
Jim C (B'more)
Is Gaborik still alive Matthew? Word is he's practicing now! It's a miracle. I look forward to the next "lower body injury"
Matthew Barnaby (3:18 PM)
Word just out, he's alive and breathing. He is practicing with the team. The next question is where will he play next. He has been injured so many times, and I just do not see the Wild commiting the kind of dollars that he is looking for. When he is healthy he is one of the premier scorers in the league. Unfortunately lately, he has not been in the lineup.
Chris Clark (East Hill)
How would you rank Malkin, Crosby, and Ovechkin?
Matthew Barnaby (3:18 PM)
I would rank them great, great, and really great.
King (Howell, NJ)
How good has Scott Clemmensen been?
Matthew Barnaby (3:20 PM)
I thought when Brodeur weent down that they should have dusted off the golf clubs and got ready from spring time. The system and the commitment from the players and coaches and the stellar play of Clemmensen has made this team a playoff contender. I am so surprised, but it just goes to show you how good even the players that are not on the original rosters are.
Mullet Rob (Riverdale, NY)
Big fan here! Matthew who was the toughest guy you ever dropped the gloves with sir?
Matthew Barnaby (3:21 PM)
Is Mullet Rob, Barry Melrose? Toughest guy I ever fought, Stu Grimson. 6'5", 250 lbs and mean. It makes me very happy to be working at ESPN. "Worldwide Leader in Sports"
Should I attend Bruins games?
Matthew Barnaby (3:22 PM)
Tom, as long as you bring your girlfriend Gissele, you can attend anything you want.
Evan (Los Angeles)
It appears that Melrose was right. Len Barrie's comments suggest he did get upset that Barry didn't heed his advice. What is the Owner/Coach relationship supposed to be like? Should Barry have swallowed his pride and listened?
Matthew Barnaby (3:25 PM)
I really think that a coach and GM have to have a lot of discussion about their players and how they are going to play them. An owner should stay out of it and if anything, should talk to the GM. You hire a coach to coach a team and a GM to give him the personnel. If you want to coach, don't hire one, do it yourself.
Willie Okeefe (New Orleans)
Crosby got into a verbal argument with a fan in the penalty box last night. I have a feeling if that was Avery he'd bee suspended. Double standard?
Matthew Barnaby (3:26 PM)
There is no double standard here, I have had many arguments with fans and they are just words. I am sure they started by yelling stuff at Crosby. He responded and the NHL does look into everything. I cannot see Crosby crossing the line. He is too well trained.
Fast Eddie (Big City)
WIll the NHL and ESPN ever make nice again and work out an agreement? Versus does not reach all of the hockey fands out there?
Matthew Barnaby (3:27 PM)
I am sure ESPN would love to have hockey back in some capacity. The NHL needs ESPN to be a player, to get to that next level. For myself, working here, there's nothing I would love more.
Being known for your fists, quite a bit in your playing days, would you comment on the state of fighting in the NHL today? I for one am tired of the Donald Brashear's of the game. I much prefer when players like Jarome Iginla and Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic etc are accountable for fighting their own battles.
Matthew Barnaby (3:30 PM)
Since I retired, I really love the way the detroit Red Wings play. They do not have a heavyweight, they play a puck possesion game, and they are dominant. Having said that, I also love a good scrap and see why teams have the need for an enforcer. The other day, Colton Orr was all over Sidney Corsby and Eric Godard came in to protect him. A fight ensued and the game continued.
Vanessa (Blauvelt, NY)
Are the Rangers too up and down to be considered serious contenders for the cup?
Matthew Barnaby (3:32 PM)
The Rangers are finding ways to win, which is very important. I really think that their power play has to improve if they are going to be considered a serious contender. The way Boston is playing and Montreal starting to hit stride, they better improve it quick.
Will the Thrashers trade Kovalcuk?
Matthew Barnaby (3:34 PM)
This is a market and a team in desperate need of Kovalchuk. He is a premier scoerer and an exciting player to watch. He is unrestricted at the end of next year so if they do not get him under contract the logical thing would be to trade him. The earlier you trade him, the more the return.
Matthew Barnaby (3:34 PM)
Thanks for all the questions. Look forward to talking to you next week. Booyah!
