Beano Cook (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am sorry to report that I did not get to go to the Clippers-Thunder game in Oklahoma City last night. I know that was a very tough ticket because both teams have fared so well...oh, that's the loss column I am looking at in the paper. Time to talk college football...fire away.
JoePA gets a 3 year deal....3 years ago who would have thought he may still be there longer than Chuck Weis would last at ND?
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
First of all, I made a prediction in 2007 that Paterno would retire after 2008. Obviously I was wrong. I will not make any more predictions about Paterno's longevity. If his health is good, we can talk about him going to 2012. Penn State's schedule next year is not demanding. The non-league schedule is easy and the Big Ten is not tough. The biggest game in the conference next season will be Ohio State at Penn State.
Beano, A large majority of the 154 ballots Tebow was left off of were in the Southwest region. Doesn't this seem like some sort of collusion to make sure that 'their guy' would win?
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
That is quite obvious. It was an absolute disgrace. It reminded me of Chicago.
Ian Burke (Omaha, NE)
Who, in your mind, is the most underrated coaching prospect in the country?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
At a school where you know he will eventually leave, Turner Gill has to be up there. Jim Grobe maybe. He is now in his middle 50s so that works against him. Gill will have a major college job by the end of next year or the year after.
David (Catonsville MD)
There was an announcement today that the Humanitarian Bowl had sold 16 tickets through the Maryland Athletic Office and 8 through Nevada. Why does that surprise anyone? Who wants to go to Boise in December? Is this clear evidence that there are way too many Bowls out there? and how does that Bowl survive?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
Number one, I don't know whether it will survive or not. It is supply and demand. There are 34 of them, and if they make money they will survive. I think there are too many teams in the NHL and NBA playoffs, but people go to the games. They sell out and money dictates things. College football bowls are like Broadway shows -- if people like the play, they will go, if not, it will go lights out. I have not heard those numbers about Maryland and Nevada.
Tony (Lancaster, PA)
I'm desperate for some Buckeyes respect. Are there any chances that Beanie Wells will return next season to help Pryor give a one-two punch to USC in The Shoe?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
That is the big question, whether or not he is coming back. Mel Kiper tells me the three best backs in terms of potential in the upcoming draft are all underclassmen and Wells is one of them.
Ashlee (Bradenton, FL)
Really you think it's disgrace? even though combined McCoy and Bradford were left off of 213 ballots? I really would like to know how that isn't a disgrace? What makes Tebow so amazing that all ballots should have included him but not the other 2 quarterbacks?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
They were not all from the same section of the country, that is the difference. For the record, all three of those players were on my ballot.
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
Also, for the record I have no complaint with Bradford winning the Heisman. Many times I have voted for the player who did not win.
Nate: (Spokane, Washington)
I know that the Pac-10 is steeped with tradition (and don't seem too open to change) but is there any chance of them expanding to 12 teams? Either Boise State, Fresno State (if academics standards are raised), BYU, Utah, etc.
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
I said years ago that I thought they would expand and BYU made sense. It would be a smart thing for them to do. One division could be Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon, Stanford and California. The other half could have BYU and Utah, Arizona and Arizona State with UC and UCLA,
I don't see any problem with leaving Tebow off and putting Crabtree or Harrell in the third spot. If anything it's a disgrace that Crabtree was left off so many ballots. Isn't the Heisman supposed to go to the best player, not the best QB/RB?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
Neither do I. I am saying that Tebow was left off by a great majority from one section of the country...that is my complaint.
Turner Gill to Penn St in a year or two?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
I don't see it. Not impossible. If you don't believe that, look at what is happening in the state of Illinois as nothing would shock me. Maybe the governor of Illinois could put up Gill for auction to the highest bidder.
Joe (Plainsboro, NJ)
Are you hearing that LeSean McCoy really will return next year?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
If I had to bet he will not be back. Kiper feels he will be the first running back picked,
Did you think Urban Meyer was right to allow Dan Mullen to call plays in the BCS title game? Mullen may be distracted by his new job.
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I agree with allowing him to do that. I feel Meyer made the right decision. There may be a slight distraction but Mullen is going for a national championship.
Adam (Beaufort, SC)
The Crimson Tide had a year that was so called "unexpected" by most in the NCAA, how do you see there future turning out in the coming years?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
I think as long as Nick Saban, who reminds me a lot of Alexander the Great, stays, I feel the Tide will be in the hunt. The best games in college or pro the next few years will be Alabama-Florida. It is Julius Caesar vs. Alexander the Great!
Swarbrick (South Bend, IN)
What can Notre Dame do to woo Urban Meyer away from Florida?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Forget it...why would he leave Florida? Give me one good reason why? The weather...
beano, What bowl game are you going to?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
None. I watch them in my living room. The one game outside of the BCS games that I am looking forward to seeing is LSU vs. Georgia Tech.
Dean (New York)
I saw recently on ESPN i think it was about congress passing legislation to force the NCAA to go to a playoff system. i know this has been a hotbutton issue for many. what are your thoughts of congress getting involved. i dont really believe its their place, they have bigger things to worry about such as the economy, not a college football playoff system.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
What a joke. This proves Congress is a joke. A complete joke. They're not only incompetent, they are not very bright.
Soup or Salad ?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Ben (Gainesville, FL)
What do you think of Sam Bradford's performances in the clutch? (0-3 when OU is trailing at any point in the 4th Quarter)
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Ridiculous observation...the kid is great.
Beano, Heather Graham said yesterday that if Meyer won a championship this year or next, that he would have nothing left to prove and would replace Weis at his 'Dream Job'
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Maybe at one time that was his dream job, Irish fans should get it out of their head, he doesn't want it. Why live in South Bend when you csn live in Gainesville, Florida.
Jonathan (Oklahoma City, OK)
I've heard the comparison of Sam Bradford to Peyton Manning... Do you agree with this comparison?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
No, I don't. I know Bradford is goos, but I don't know if he is Manning.
Jim (Lubbock, TX)
Why is Leach unfairly accused of running up the score on opponents and Stoops is commended for record breaking consecutive 60+ point games?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I was critical of Stoops for rolling it up this year. I don' t believe in piling it on and I am from a different era, so I am probably out of touch,
Did Ohio State miss out on Meyer when they hired Tressel? (he was at Bowling Green at the time --I believe)
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Tressel has done a good job. He won a national championship and have played for it another two times. Quit your complaining. How many schools would take playing for a national championship three times in less than a decade.
Beano, With all the fame, tv contract, etc..., you could go on forever -- Notre Dame ever year should be challenging for National championships. What the heck is the problem? They might be the most underachieving team in sports over the last 10 years. Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
I agree with your statement. For Notre Dame to go 20 years without winning a national championship is amazing. Notre Dame has its own radio network and NBC gives a four-hour infomercial during their games. The only thing they don't sell on the Notre Dame games is jewelry. Don't tell me academics had nothing to do with it. Notre Dame gets some players in.
Judging from the questions you choose to answer I'm not sure if you are aware that the ACC plays football. In fact, they had a winning record against the SEC this year, including a win by Duke. How do you see the ACC performing nationally over the next few years?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
The ACC had a very compelling season, I agree. I don't get that many questions of the ACC --Dick Vitale does but I don't. One of the highlights of the year was what Georgia Tech did to Georgia.
Patrick (Mobile, AL)
Beano, I heard that the reason Tommy Tuberville resigned at Auburn AND received is buyout was due to a breach of his contract. Supposidly an AU official contacted Houston Nutt after the Iron Bowl to gauge his interest, and Houston contacted his agent, Jimmy Sexton, who is also Tommy's. There is supposidly a clause that Tommy has to be made aware before any coach is contacted. Have you heard anything regarding this?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
No, I have not heard anything about this. I don't believe Nutt would have considered leaving Mississippi after one season to go to Auburn.
What do you think of Randy Shannon as Miami's coach?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
Give him a couple of years. Miami is in a bowl, playing California in the Emerald Bowl and that should be a good game.
Do you think Texas will try to run up the score on Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl to make a statement to the BCS community???
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
First win the game. The BCS community is not going to care what the score is.
Hope (Chance, CA)
Do you think a non-BCS team would ever win the national title ever again like BYU did years ago?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
No, I think times have changed.
David (Catonsville MD)
Beano, if you were a head coach would you use the Bowl game as a reward and allow the players to have a great time (within reason) or crack down on them and prepare them for the game only.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
If you are playing for the national championship, I would crack down. Otherwise, go out and within reason, as you put it, have a good time. It should be a learning experience and preparation for the future too.
Joe (St. Louis)
Will Joe Paterno retire in your lifetime?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
That isn't my call. My lifetime isn't my call.
Tim Tebow (Gainesville, FL)
Did the Ole Miss loss cost me the Heisman? Thank you, Mr. Cook for voting for me. I greatly appreciate it. I just wish the other 900 voters had your brilliant mind. Why does Ashlee (Bradenton, FL) hate me so much? I have seen her in other ESPN chat rooms marginalizing me. She must be a Seminole or Hurricane fan.
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
I don't think the loss to Mississippi cost Tebow the Heisman, not after that performance against Alabama.
Will OJ be removed from the Hall of Fame?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
That is not my call. I am not sure if he still has his Heisman vote, or maybe it was being auctioned off by the governor of Illinois.
Do you think OU has a chance without Murray?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Of course they do. It would not be a big upset if the Sooners won. The loss of Murray does hurt, but Chris Brown is just fine. It isn't like Dick Vitale is the backup.
Beano, why are you so hard on Penn State? What have they done to you? Every school in the country, except a few, schedules cupcakes. Every conference has a down year, or two, including the ever so precious SEC. I think the bowl season can determine where the Big Ten stands, quit griping already!
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
OK. I hear you.
Brett (Tulsa, Ok)
Is it possible that people from the southwest were voting for the heisman based on stats and not intangibles? If Tebow didnt win last year he probably wouldnt even be considered.
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
All I am saying is, my lone criticism is all of those non-votes came from one section of the country and I don't think that was an accident. They are entitled to vote any way they want, and that's fine.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
That's two Dick Vitale references from you in this chat. What's that about?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
Vitale is a superstar, baby!
Tim Griffin Berkeley Ca
Do you see Jahvid Best rushing for over 200 yards against Miami with the way he's been rushing and the way Miami's rush defense has been playing?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Running for over 300 against Washington is a little different than facing Miami. He should have a very good game, but I don't know about 200.
Fo Sheezy, Pittsburgh
Beano, as a former Pitt SID, do you sympathize with the fans of Pitt and Penn State that want to see this rivalry renewed once again? Please talk about your memories of this rivalry back in the late 70's and early 80's when it was truly one of the premier games at the end of every season. Any chance of this game coming back or does that have to wait until JoePa is gone? Thanks!
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Fans always want to see great rivalries, Life still goes on.
Justin (NY, NY)
The "non-votes" came from that section of the country because that is where the other TOP 4 candidates played. Those people, having seen Texas Tech play every week, felt Crabtree and Harrell were more deserving than Tebow!
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Give it a rest. OK, you are right. Enough on that topic. I have given my opinion on the subject.
Who is Dickie V's pick for BCS champion? Duke?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
Across town...North Carolina. Oh yeah, that really is hoops.
Did Terrelle Pryor disappoint you this season?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Number one, he is a freshman. As a freshman, no, If he was a junior, yes, His passing has to improve,
Dan (Irving, TX)
How do you like this CHANGE for the BIG 12...bequeath Mizzou to the Big Ten, drop Iowa State, pick up TCU and SMU, and realign the divisions; sending the two Oklahoma schools to the North Division and adding TCU and SMU to the South Division. This would have solved this season's tri-tie conundrum. I think SMU deserves another shot at the national spotlight because they have ATONED for their sins.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
Have you seen SMU lately? I always thought Missouri would join the Big Ten and be the 12th team, but apparently that will not happen. The Pac-10 would be smart to take BYU and Utah and have a championship game...that would make a lot of money.
More boring: a Pirates/Royals game or VT's offense? Seriously, what do the Hokies need to do to get over the hump?
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
Anything in baseball is more boring, even Yankees and Red Sox. Did New York spend enough on AJ Burnett. The guy won more than 15 games once in his career. Baseball is a joke without a salary cap. People love pro football and have distain for baseball. MLB needs a bailout.
Wes (Houston, Tx)
Why is no one talking about the turn around that Bo Pelini Made with the Nebraska? 5-7 Last year no bowl, 8-4 this year with a New Years Day Bowl, and not much heard in the media. Why do you think that is??
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
I agree. Nebraska did an excellent job. Now we will see what happens with the Cornhuskers next year.
Has Ohio St become the new Notre Dame? Everyone seems to hate them no matter what they do. When they beat Miami and Texas there are excuses for their wins, when the lose to Florida and USC it is because they are terrible.
Beano Cook (3:58 PM)
No, I don't think so. I don't feel Ohio State is hated. Notre Dame is the most liked and disliked in the nation. I don't see how you can dislike the dotting of the I, unless you are from Michigan. I will be off next week for Christmas Eve but will chat again on New Year's Eve at 3 pm ET with a bowl preview. Take care and happy holidays.
