Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Buzzmaster (1:01 PM)
Keith Kidd is here!
Keith Kidd (1:02 PM)
What a great weekend we've got! There are some awesome games. Let's get rolling and talk some football.
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
We are taking votes from the Nation for the Matt Millen Award, so get them in.
Dan (Dallas)
I nominate Terrell Owens for this weeks Millen Award.
Jmerms (NYC)
Who has a better Defense? Giants or Panthers?
Keith Kidd (1:04 PM)
Great question. Right now, I'm sticking with the Giants. With that pressure that they can create with that four man rush and Webster and Ross have held up great on the outside. There was a stretch where the Panthers defense wasn't playing well, but they're playing well as of late.
Steve (Syracuse)
What do the Titans have to do to pull off an upset this weekend?
Keith Kidd (1:05 PM)
They're going to have to find a way to run the ball on a great Pittsburgh defense. And their WRs are going to have to step up and make plays on passes from Kerry Collins. The loss of Haynesworth and Van Den Bosch will be big on the defense. Getting turnovers will be key.
Kev (NYC)
How does a guy leading the league in TDs (Rivers) get snubbed by a guy who leads in INTs (Favre)?? That makes zero sense
Keith Kidd (1:06 PM)
I have never been a big advocate of the Pro Bowl. It's so political, especially with offensive linemen. Based on Favre's career and how much success he's had, this to me is not that big of a deal. We're watching the end of a great career. If he gets to go to a Pro Bowl and he's elected, he's well deserving.
Adam (Columbus, OH)
Hey Kidder, everyone is enamored with the Steelers in the AFC, but I just don't see it. To me Big Ben is holding onto the ball far too long and not feeling the pocket pressure correctly, both of which seem like a disaster come playoff time. What are your thoughts? Who is the favorite in the AFC?
Keith Kidd (1:08 PM)
The Steelers defense is the best defense I've seen in a long, long time. All they have to do is get games into the fourth quarter, which they've done, and find a way to win. They're winning ugly, but I'd much rather have a win than a loss, any day of the week.
Jimmy (Flint, MI)
I don't know if fantasy football is your specialty, but I'll ask anyway.....Do I start Jones-Drew tonight vs. Colts, seeing that he'll be receiving passes as well? Or will the Colts D have an answer?
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
I'm in the championship of my league this weekend. Do you start Jones? I don't see how you can't start him. Fred Taylor's out, so I don't see how he doesn't get a lot of touches. But he's on the opposite team that I'm playing, so I hope he has a bad night.
Sean (Seattle WA)
The Vikings have been on a roll for the last 2 months and are currently riding a 4 game win streak. How dangerous can they be in the playoffs with AD and what looks like a top 5 defense?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
The Vikings are on a roll because they're sticking to their main identity offense and that's running the ball. It will be interesting to see how they can respond without Pat Williams. All you have to do is get into the playoffs and anything can happen. This is going to be a great game with Atlanta.
Majeed
A bigger travesty if Favre making it ahead of Pennington. Anyways, Keith, is the KC game a trap game for Miami?
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
I don't see KC being a trap game at all, especially how they lost to San Diego last week. This Miami team is good. They're fully healthy. They're another team like the Steelers -- no matter how the game goes, good or bad, they find ways to win. I can see them winning out.
N THEWS (sacramento)
Do you still think the bears can make the playoffs
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
They're going to have to win out and the Vikings will have to lose one of their last two. However, I definitely see the Bears winning Monday night, but going to Houston to end the season, that's going to be tough.
Chad (Cascade,MD)
Ravens/cowboys who wins?
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
I like the Cowboys at home on a short week. There's something about teams playing the Steelers and not having success the following week. It's tough for the Ravens earlier in the year moving their bye week to Week 2, so now they've played how many straight weeks? That hurts an older team.
Adam (Jersey)
Let's also nominate Stylez G. White for Matt Millen award. I might be okay with it if he had improved on last year's 8 sacks. But he's at 4.
Dan (Buffalo, NY)
Kidder, who does your gut tell you is coaching the Browns next year? And will they be good? (and by good i mean 8-8)
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
To me, it all depends on what Randy Lerner does with Phil Savage. If Savage is in place to hire the next coach, your guess is as good as mine. I just find it hard to believe that Bill Cowher will be the next coach in Cleveland.
Adam (Jersey)
Braylon Edwards for the Matt Millen award! "I've learned being here that I'm very unappreciated," Edwards said. "Not in the organization, just in the eyes of the fans, the city. Since Day One I've been a marked man coming from Michigan. It's just gone that way. Even when things are good, there's heckles."
Jmerms (NYC)
Jets make the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
It would be nice for someone other than the Patriots to win the AFC East. But I just don't like how the Jets are playing. Going to Seattle and playing Mike Holmgren in his last game in that stadium, it could be a bad day for the Jets.
Matt (Raleigh, NC)
Do you think the Giants corners can match up effectively with Steve Smith?
Keith Kidd (1:16 PM)
There's no doubt that the Giants will design certain coverages in passing situations to have two people responsible for Smith. You can expect a safety high every time they're in a critical passing situation. The key to Smith is to not let him have those big, explosive plays. Let him catch the ball, but don't let him take it to the house.
Chris (Asheboro, NC)
Merry Christmas, Kidder
Kurt Warner (Arizona)
So Keith, I am definitely sure that I should not win MVP. My team has been failing recently and I have been playing like everyone has been used to since I left St. Louis. Can you please tell everyone to get off my MVP bandwagon?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
Hey Kurt, it could be a long day for you in New England on Sunday. This game to me is a key game to see where the Cardinals program is at right now. Can they go on the road in the Northeast and find a way to beat one of the elite organizations in football? I don't think they can.
Jmerms (NYC)
Who has a better 1-2 Punch? Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward or Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
I'm going with Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. But with these two, I'm going Williams and Stewart because Jacobs is banged up right now.
Tom (OH)
Please remind Braylon that he may set the record for drops in a season, has a horrible percentage of receptions per target, and has had one great year and 3 bad ones.
Matt Hasselbeck
It was bad enough the refs gave Pittsburgh the super bowl a few years ago.
N Thews (Sacramento)
Would you consider London Flethcher a Hall of Famer? He has at least 300 more tackles than Urlacher with only 2 additional yrs played.
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
To me, the question is not future Hall of Famer, but why didn't he make the Pro Bowl. Here's a guy, like John Abraham, that got robbed.
Jmerms (NYC)
Keith, are you a Giants fan? You always have something positive to say about them.
Keith Kidd (1:19 PM)
Here are some positive things for you: no explosion in the offense, the third down efficiency is awful and they can't score in the red zone. There's some positive things for you.
Ryan (Denver)
I believe the best WR combo in the league ahs to be Boldin and Fitzgerald, but who comes after that?
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
I totally agree with you. How about Randy Moss and Wes Welker in New England? TO and Roy Williams in Dallas? Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal in Denver? My underrated group: Andre Johnson and Walter in Houston.
Brett (LA)
Marshall and Royal
Ray Lewis
I hear you Hasselbeck. No one has even mentioned the horrible call on the Gary Russell run earlier in the game.
Anthony (NYC)
But Kidder the Jets have seven Pro Bowlers on their squad, they've got to make the playoffs. If they don't how will that look?
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
I already mentioned that I'm not a Pro Bowl fan. The Jets see that they have 7 pro bowlers. If they don't win out, does that make you want to make a change in the organization somewhere?
Matt (Denver)
Kidder: I'm struggling with the Broncos schizophrenia. They seem to reach new highs and lows every other week. Any hope for this club in the playoffs (assuming they get there)?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
I agree. THey are my version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I'll tell you this much, they're going to get in the playoffs, but as far as them stopping anyone defensively, there's no hope. But the good news is this, we all said the same thing about the Colts a couple of years ago. They got hot and won the Super Bowl.
Patrick(Hoboken)
Hey Ray and Matt stop crying, great teams don't let the refs call the game, they win it on their own!
Majeed
Fully healthy? Smiley and Camarillo are on IR and Crowder can't practice. Hope your right about them winning out though!
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
A lot of teams at this point have key players on IR. Remember, it's how you're playing as a team late in the year that means the most. Just be in the race. If you don't get in, you don't have a chance.
Andrew (Louisville, KY)
What about Greg Jennings and Donald Driver as a complimentary duo of solid vet and young deep-threat?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
Great call. I forgot about Green Bay because they're so bad defensively. How do you go from 13-3 to 5-9? That's my question to the Nation. In a weak division!
Adam (Louisville, KY)
You mentioned how you hope MJD doesn't run all over my Colts for your fantasy team, but do you see that happening tonight? It seems to me the Colts have too much to wrap up this week to get caught in a struggle with an undisciplined team like Jax.
Keith Kidd (1:26 PM)
I don't them running all over them, because I see two organizations going in opposite directions. This Colts team clinches the playoff spot with one win in the next two weeks. If they win this one, they can sit everyone to get them healthy for the playoffs. This game is so critical.
Ryan (Denver)
Geez Keith, a ton of disappointing teams this year, whose at the top of your list?
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
Ohhh, where should we begin? Let's start with the Cleveland Browns. Then the Jacksonville Jaguars. San Diego Chargers. New Orleans Saints. Seattle Seahawks. All of these teams are not who we thought they were.
Gshawn Johnson (DC)
Matt Millen award to the Probowl announcements and to the NFL for keeping the same sorry system in place all these years
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
Oh yeah, I forgot about the Packers.
Will J (Portland, OR)
Keith, do you think Marion Barber will play this weekend, but use him on a need to basis? Obviously they can't afford to lose.
Keith Kidd (1:29 PM)
If you can walk, you're going to play this weekend. There's no doubt he'll play this weekend. Last week they found a great change of pace back to lessen his workload in Tashard Choice.
Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)
I know the Browns coaching will change but they can't seriously hand Brady Quinn the keys without a great insurance policy, right? He was out there 2 1/2 games before getting injured and proved little. Do you think they'll keep Anderson or go with a veteran backup (like Kyle Boller if Savage is still there)?
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
I would definitely keep Anderson over Kyle Boller. If Savage survives, do you think he'll want the new coach playing Quinn, the guy he traded the No. 1 pick for? Savage hired all of Romeo's coaches, picked all of the players, but Romeo gets all of the blame. Help me figure that one out.
Denny Green
The Bears are who we thought they were
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Matt Millen Award to Brett Favre for starting retirement talk now...
Denny Green (AZ)
Kidder, "THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE...AND WE LET'EM OFF THE HOOK"
Adam (Jersey)
Matt Millen award to anyone that cares about the Pro Bowl.
Anthony (NYC)
Kidder which ever team plays well in the trenches on both sides of the ball will be the victor in the Giants vs. Panthers. Who do you feel has the edge in this battle?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
That's a very valid point. This game is huge. Even if the Panthers lose to the Giants, the Giants could still lose to the Vikings and the Panthers win home field.
Rob; Minden, NV
Hey Keith, I beleive the Bears would have to win both games and the Vikings would have to lose BOTH games for the Bears to win the North. The Bears still do have an outside shot at a wildcard, as well.
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
Rob, you're probably right. There are so many different formulas and tie-breakers. My show's only an hour, so I can't figure it all out.
Al (indy)
Dick Jauron for the Millen award. He allowed his back up QB to lose a game for him when his job performance is already being questioned.A very Millen like decision.
Adam (Columbus, OH)
Matt Millen award to you Kidder for bringing up Denny Green, ugh. How much money can a guy make for such a meltdown...
Razvan (Troy)
Do you think the Bucs have a shot at winning the NFC South and number 2 seed? Is there any shot the panthers might lose their last 2 games?
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
I don't see that happening. I see the Bucs winning their last two, but I don't see the Panthers losing out. If they don't win Sunday, they'll beat the Saints in the final game.
Jim Mora conversation with Herm Edwards?
You play to win the game! Playoffs? Hello? You play to win the game! Playoffs?
Angelo (Cleveland)
Please Keith Romeo could,nt coach the 85 Bears
Keith Kidd (1:34 PM)
That's surprising, because two rings that I have in my vault were from the New England Patriots and he was the defensive coordinator.
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
Thanks for those rings Romeo.
Rich Denver, CO
Will the Broncos get out of the first round of playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
Like I've said all along, anything's possible. All you have to do is get in. But I don't know if I like playing the Colts at home in the first round.
Matt (Denver)
Dang, you have a vault?
Keith Kidd (1:36 PM)
Yeah. Fort Knox is right down the road!
Will Cassidy (Hagerstown)
I think Joe Flacco should be the NFL Rookie of the year over Matt Ryan because Flacco put the Ravens' offense on the map
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
Will, you make a good point, but my choice is easily Matt Ryan. To me, the development of Matt Ryan has put Mike Mularkey back on the map as having a shot to get a head coaching job in this league again.
Will J (Portland, OR)
So which guy would you play this weekend Barber, Parker, or Stewart?
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
None....I would go with Parker, because of those two injuries in Tennessee.
Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)
Did someone say great refs? Here I am, ready and willing to flag anyone who disagrees or whines about the chat.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
Is Joe Thomas the best tackle in the league?
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
He's one of the best young LTs in the league. That's one guy that Cleveland hit on in the draft.
John (Watertown, NY)
Millen award to Tom Cable for actually coming and saying that he's a good coach (as anyone bothered showing him the standings)
Matt (Raleigh, NC)
Do you think LT will bounce back next year? He hasn't shown any evidence he can make plays anymore.
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
Hopefully the whole Chargers team bounces back. They need a healthy LT to get this team back to where it's supposed to be -- in the playoffs. The interesting thing is what do you do with Darren Sproles?
Jon (Brooklyn, NY)
Those rings were all Bellichick, look at how Weiss & Romeo's careers have gone since then
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
Thank you to all three of those guys. I forgot to thank Bill and Charlie too.
Brian (Boston, MA)
Do you see Dallas getting into the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
Tough question. What a great game that Week 17 could present us in primetime with the Cowboys and Eagles to decide that final wild card spot, if it plays out that way. But, to answer the question, I picked them to win the Super Bowl at the beginning of the season, so yes, I see them getting the wild card.
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
Get those Matt Millen votes in!
Commish (more taste league)
I think you need to recheck your answer. If the giants beat the panthers they win homefield even if they lose to the vikings. You said if they lose to the vikings then the panthers can still win homefield.
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
You're right again. I'm in the holiday spirit, but I forgot they'd win the tie-break because they would have beaten the Panthers. I apologize to the Nation.
Greg (Champaign, IL)
FAVRE FOR MATT MILLEN AWARD!
Jon (New York)
The Millen award goes to Al Davis every week until her fires himself
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
By the way I hate tiebreakers.
Andrew (Louisville, KY)
I keep hearing that Wade Phillips won't be back in Dallas next season. I think the opposite; he is a soft-spoken guy that allows a lot of drama to occur, and I think Jerry Jones loves this.
Adam (Jersey)
Brian Griese for Matt Millen award. No particular reason, I guess. Just a lifetime acheivement award. Plus he took a couple of stupid sacks last week.
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
The votes have been tallied, and according to the Nation, we're going with Braylon Edwards in Cleveland.
Steiny (NYC)
How big of a blow is it to the Vikings to lose run-stopper DT Pat Williams for 2-6 weeks?
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
It's a huge blow. That was the cornerstone of that defense. However, in my view, Kevin Williams would have been the bigger blow, because he's a three-down guy.
Baumer (NYC)
Is Hester a real threat at WR, he's done well since Orton came back. Would you start him over Santana Moss?
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
The question is the elements in Chicago. He really didn't do anything the last time. But the Redskins offense isn't really doing anything either. I'd roll the dice and go with Moss over Hester.
Steiny (NYC)
How impressed were you with Philip Rivers on Sunday?
Keith Kidd (1:47 PM)
I've been impressed with Rivers all season long. That's the one person on that team that has really had a good year and has gone under the radar because they have not won many games.
Jake Long (Miami)
Kidder, What are your thougths on my rookie season?
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
Very impressive. Another guy, much like, Joe Thomas that will stabilize that left side for years to come.
Matt (Raleigh, NC)
Which free agents do you think will be the most pursued this off-season?
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
Albert Haynesworth, without a doubt. Julius Peppers, Jordan Gross, TJ Houshmanzadeh.
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
Kurt Warner too.
Steve (Rochester, NY)
Miami and Atlanta both used their top 2 picks in 2008 to select a QB and an OL. Who did better? Miami with Long and Henne or Atlanta with Ryan and Baker?
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
I'm going with Ryan and Baker. You have to go with Ryan and Baker. Henne has yet to see the field. And Atlanta did the one thing that's hardest to do in this league and that's find a franchise QB.
Steve (Syracuse)
Can the Titans retain Haynesworth, or do you see a team like Oakland or someone just overwhelming him with cash?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
I'm sure they'll try every way imagineable to get a deal done before the end of February. However, if he hits the open market, he'll get an enormous payday. The player has a ton of leverage.
John (Miami)
I hear a lot of talk about the Patriots considering trading Tom Brady and keeping Cassel. Are they really that stupid? As a Miami Dolphins fan, this (combined with favre possibly retiring) would be great news. Whats your thoughts on this?
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
No. No. No. No. Tom Brady will be the QB for New England next year, and Matt Cassel will be elsewhere, unless he wants to play for a below market deal to be a backup. And I don't see them franchising him, because that's $28 million in two players.
Ed (Boston)
There is absolutely no "talk" about trading Brady. Puhleeze.
Shane (Corpus Christi, TX)
With the Oakland Raiders having another horrible season, does it look like there's going to be another change at Head Coach? If so, who might be the possible canidates?
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
Not to be a smart #$%, when it comes to the Raiders, I have no idea.
Chad (Va)
Who has the better match up. Romo vs Ravens or Schaub vs Raiders?
Keith Kidd (1:54 PM)
I think Schaub v. Raiders. We saw the pounding Romo took last week against the Giants and we might see a similar pounding this week too.
Mark (Tampa, FL)
What do th Packers need to adress the most in th draft?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Offensive line has to be a main focal point. Defensive linemen and I think they'll look at the CB position too, based on the year Al Harris has had.
Ryan (Denver)
Who's worse the Denver defense or the Lions Offense?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
I'm going with the Denver defense. The Lions offense has scored more points than the Redskins.
Adam (Jersey)
Can the Bucs do any damage in the playoffs without homefield? (Until the Super Bowl, I guess.)
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
I'm totally up in the air with them, because they can't stop the run. We saw how much this offense gets exposed with the OL, without Jeff Garcia on the field. If this team is going to do any damage in the playoffs, they have to get Garcia healthy.
Chad Ocho Cinco (Ohio)
Is there anyone left who would want to trade for me? It seems the local NFL halfway house.. I mean Dallas is already full of receivers.
Keith Kidd (1:58 PM)
Do you think the Bengals are kicking themselves for not moving you to the Redskins in the offseason? If those reports were true, offering two No. 1s...
Brad(NM)
Kidder..do you think anybody will consider signing Losman in the offseason? Not only has he proven to be an awful QB, but he's also willing to lose any game that appears to be in the bag. Maybe someone can purchase Losman and Turk Schonert in a bargain deal!
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
There will be some teams that consider it, but money will be a huge factor, because he won't get a lot of money. He's hurt his value by the way he's played when he's had a chance to play this year. It's a QB driven league.
James (Rowan University)
What do the Eagles need to address this offseason?
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
Offensive tackle. A WR. FB that can block. They always take defensive linemen, so put that one down.
Adam (Jersey)
Speaking of kicking himself, how does Jason Taylor feel about heading to that playoff contender?
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
Yeah, how about that one? Be careful what you wish for in the NFL.
Mark (FLO-RIDA)
Why has Chad Pennington received no love this season for turning the Dolphins around?
Keith Kidd (2:01 PM)
We've given Chad Pennington a lot of love on this show. What an amazing season he's had. They could play for the AFC East championship in the last game against the team that said he wasn't good enough. What a great story.
Keith Kidd (2:02 PM)
I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Everyone be safe. Make sure you check my last Monday Night Football preview show between the Pack and Bears. Enjoy what's going to be a great two weeks of watching NFL as we get ready for the playoffs. Catch you back here in two weeks. Kidder
