Dan Rafael (11:59 AM)
Greetings, Fight Freaks! It's a new year and a new season of FNF starts tonight, which I am looking forward to since Yuriorkis Gamboa is in the main event. We've got plenty to discuss besides that. Hope you all check the updated schedule and check out my new blog today. Let's get to it.
Tim (Lincoln)
DTM - finally saw the Adamek-Cunningham war. Is it just me, or does Cunningham remind you of Jermaine Taylor: remarkable ability, but frustrating to watch as he negates his talent with technical and strategical mishaps?
Dan Rafael (11:59 AM)
It's not a bad comparrison.
Joel (NY)
Dan, whats the word on Julio Diaz being Anthony Peterson's opponent and after reading your blog, how much of a chance do you think Cintron/Clottey gets added to the Top Rank PPV?
Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
I think there is a great chance Clottey-Cintron gets added to the show. From what I am told, Clottey's part is set. Now it's down to working out the money with Cintron and his team. They are not far off from what I understand, but they are not there yet. As for Diaz, I am told he turned down that fight. Not sure if Anthony will be on the PPV or not at this point.
rob (jersey)
Would there ever be a card that would involve both Klitchkos' defending - or am I nuts?
Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
Never. They each bring their own seven-figure gate and huge license fee from German TV and their own US TV money. Would make no sense to have them together on one show.
Mark (Ottawa, Canada)
With new rumours of a Wlad-Haye fight does this mean the proposed Wlad-Arreola fight is dead for the moment?
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
I think there is a good chance Wladimir's next fight is against Haye instead of Arreola.
Daniel (UK)
You maybe in the minority in wanting to see Williams-Winky but I'm definitely there with you. Winky is a proven elite class fighter and although he's coming off a long (self-inflicted) layoff, I still think he will give Williams all he can handle. I'm still tipping Willams on points though.
Carlos (Funky Town, TX)
Dan, everyone always asks about Israel Vasquez but is there anything in the works for my boy Rafael Marquez?
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
Nothing at the moment. There has been a little talk about this and that, but nothing concrete.
Joel (NY)
Will there be a notebook today?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
No, there was a massive one on Tuesday, so check it out. There are also four news stories from the past two days in the news headslines you should check out.
John (ATL GA)
Dan, Great blog today> do you think that RING made the decision to not recognize Margo-Mosley as a title match has anything to do with Mosleys's sterios accusations? I know they would never publicly say that but I think it was an underlying factor.
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
I don't think the steroid situation had anything to do with it at all. It was just a terrible decision.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, Has the Martinez\Santos fight been finalized and moved to the February show? With that, will HBO only show the Berto\Collazo fight next week?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
Here's the deal with that: Berto-Collazo will air as one fight only next week. On Feb. 14, we will see Angulo-Mayorga and Campbell-Funeka. HBO is also finalizing the Santos-Martinez fight. The Martinez side is done, from what Lou DiBella told me last night. HBO and King have made their deal for Santos. The remaining aspect of the deal that needs to be finished is for King to make his deal with Santos. I believe it will happen and if it does, it is an absolutely sensational tripleheader. There are some who like to rip HBO just for fun. And there have been times where it has been warranted. This is not one of those times. Right now, HBO has on paper a stellar first quarter. Even if you don't like Dawson-Tarver 2, which I don't and I don't know anyone who does, the rest of the schedule is awesome. If one fight out of several is a little weak, that happens. Nobody bats 1.000. I give huge props to HBO for the schedule it has on the books and other stuff in the works (like Kirkland against Joel "Love Child" Julio, if Julio accepts the fight).
Mike(Charlotte)
What is Joe Greene's next move since the backout?
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
He could wind up facing Kirkland on the BAD in March.
Nick ( Perkiomenville Pa )
I dont know about anyone else, but i'm excited to finally be able to watch Chris John fight and having it Houston against Rocky, gotta give the man props for taking that 1!
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
I definitely give him props for coming not only to the US to fight, but doing it in his opponent's hometown.
Matt (Washington, DC)
Dan, I agree with you that Margarito-Mosley should be for the Ring championship but disagree with you that it's a "terrible decision." The Paul Williams factor is not gibberish. Paul did not "leave" welterweight. He is fighting in multiple weight classes in order to find the best fights. He does not have a weight class. He is absolutely in the mix as one of the top three welterweights. He just happens to be in the mix for 154 too.
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
You don't leave a vacant title because a fighter MIGHT come back to the division. Williams will have had three fights in a row outside welterweight, which means he's not a welterweight. If he comes back to 147, great. He can fight the winner of Margarito-Mosley for the title. But you do not back up titles because of a big maybe.
Yorkis (Philly)
I was very disappointed with Ding a Ling's performance on the Contender. Have you talked to him about it?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
No, but it was shocking he lost every round. I have known the result since the fight happened, but I didn't realize how lopsided it was.
Aaron (Dighton, MA)
Is there any truth to the report that Bob Arum would like to put Hatton/Pacman on CBS?
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
There's no chance the actual fight is on CBS. What Bob is floating out there, like he always does, is that he'd like CBS (which is in the same company as Showtime) to somehow be involved in the promotion or marketing if the bout wound up on Showtime PPV. But the actual bout being on CBS is not happening.
Matt (Washington, DC)
Wow, that possible Valentine's Day Massacre (like the promotional idea?) card is outstanding! I'd watch Angulo or Campbell against anybody, but both matchups happen to be interesting and there's a possibility for a third fight too!
Patrick (Woodside, NY)
Who is the more likely Pavlik opponent in 2009: Arthur Abraham or Paul Williams?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
I don't think we'll see either fight this year, but if he did ever fight one of them, I think it would be Williams before Abraham.
Steve (CA)
Dan, Matvey Korobov will open the Top Rank PPV?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
Still to be determined. Korobov might wind up off TV and maybe we'd see highlights. They are still trying to work it all out. Originally, Arum told me Korobov on TV, but things change.
Justin (DC)
Dan, any word on the Taylor/Froch situation?
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
Taylor is the mandatory and Showtime is interested in the fight. However, it wouldn't happen until at least spring because I am told Froch has a broken rib from the fight with Pascal.
Pancho, Los Mochis
With Juarez electing to fight Chris John, where does that leave Luevano - perhaps a rematch with deserving Mario Santiago?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
Luevano will fight on HBO on an April BAD card most likely. Juan Manuel Lopez will also be on that card. Since it is likely to be in Puerto Rico, I doubt it will be a Santiago rematch. Santiago is from Puerto Rico and I doubt they would want the rematch in his backyard. That's why Luevano-Juarez didn't happen on Feb. 28 because Luevano's manager didn't want the fight in Juarez's hometown.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, do you know why Pavlik/Abraham is such a reach and might never happen?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Because Pavlik's management doesn't want the fight. Pretty simple.
Joel (NY)
Dan, being a huge fan of boxing but having to pay $7 for the spanish package on my cable system, do you believe it is worth it for the boxing on Azteca America? Your opinion please
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
For $7 a month? Absolutely.
Brent, Toronto
Do you think Showtime championship boxing will pick up Vitali v. Gomez?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
I think it's possible, but I haven't heard about it being serious, so I sort of doubt it. I believe there will be some sort of US outlet but not sure where just yet.
chris (brooklyn, ny)
Dan, have you spoken personally to Evander and told him to stop fighting?
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
I have spoken to Evander many times but I have never said that to him. I think he knows, if he reads, what the bulk of the media and fans think.
Mike(Charlotte)
Do you think Flores deserves a shot at Adamek, even though he put on a snoozefest in his only bout in 2008?
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
He's as desereving as any other cruiserweight out there. Why not? It's not like there is an abundance of top challengers who are available.
Mario (Houston, TX)
Dan, What do you think of the Juarez-John fight? Will this be a tougher fight for Rocky than Leuvano?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Any time you have the No. 1 guy in a division (John) facing a legit contender it's a good thing. I love the fact that the fight was made. In many ways, it's an even better fight than the Luevano match, so again, I give HBO props for helping it happen. I think both matches are tough for Rocky.
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
Vazquez being stripped is the biggest slap in the face for the efforts he has given fans over the past couple years. It is completely ridiculous and shameful. That aside, is there any doubt that JuanMa Lopez is the class of that division tho...even over Marquez and Vazquez.
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Lopez is clearly the best young star in the division and I think in a head-to-head match with Vazquez, Lopez would win. But Vazquez has been treated shamefully by the WBC.
Oleg Maskaev (Staten Island)
Dan quit hating on the WBC. I have a mandatory title shot and I did absolutely nothing to deserve. I love the WBC!
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
My bad.
Zach MPLS
Dan, are u happy that you won't get any more "when is chris john comin to america" questions?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Yes, I am as thrilled as a little kid on Christmas morning.
Mike (Rome, NY)
January 16 At Key West, Fla. (ESPN2): Dan Rafael in studio...CLASSIC!!
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Enjoy. I expect all the Freaks to tune in.
Zach MPLS
Kirkland vs Love Child... i just craped my pants!
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. It's not done yet and I'm not sure it will get done because of the money. But if the notion of that fight has aided your constipation problem, I am happy to help.
JJD (Seattle)
It's also worth pointing out, I suppose, that there is a *chance* Tarver/Dawson 2 could be the best fight out of the bunch. I'm not saying I'd predict that, but you don't know what's going to happen until they start fighting, right?
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
You're right but there are two ways to judge fights, on paper going in what you expect and after the fact. Going into this one, it is not unreasonable to expect a lopsided bout.
EX-LAX
Oh no Dan - don;t put us out of business...
Dan (Nutley, NJ)
What is the deal with Don King not having a site yet for the 2/14 card? Will this cause another empty house for a very good card?
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
It could be. It's crazy that a fight card like that one has no home a month out.
Brody (DC)
Is there any possibility that a Spanish language program like on Azteca could do a SAP broadcast in English? I don't really care about in-fight commentary, but watching Solo Boxeo it would have been nice to catch some of the introduction and backstory on the fighters.
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
I have hoped for something like that forever, but it is unlikely given the cost and the fact that Azteca America is for Spanish-language viewers. They don't really care if non-Spanish language speaking people watch or not.
Darian (Phoenix)
Do you know if Lupe Contreas going to move over to the new Azteca America series? QUIEN ES EL MAS MACHO!!
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
I am told he will be moving over.
Steve (NYC)
Love the blog about Mosley tickets. How is it that Pavlik is charging more for his seats in a depressed area? Are tickets moving?
Dan Rafael (12:25 PM)
The Pavlik fight, according to the Youngstown paper, will be a sellout with ticket demand insane. It will be the biggest crowd ever in that building -- a jammed, sold out crowd of about 7,000.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Does Steve Cunningham still have a shot at being Adamek's next opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
No. That rematch may happen down the road, but not on Feb. 27 since the money is not big for that Showtime card.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Dan, how much of a shot would you give Arreola against Dr. Steelhammer if Chris comes in to the fight in the best shape of his life?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
A puncher's chance.
Joel (NY)
Dan, so the JCC Jr. PPV is confirmed for March 7th? Any word of an undercard yet?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Arum wants to do Valero-Pitalua on the show. He's been talking to the Valero camp about signing him.
Steve (NYC)
Dan tell Don King the card should go to Ballys ballroom. AC has zero fights coming up. The ballroom shows always draw well.
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
King is not allowed to promote in New Jersey.
Matt (portland, OR)
"But if the notion of that fight has aided your constipation problem, I am happy to help." A bit early but that's gotta be in the running for line of the year come this Jan.
Dave (NYC)
Will Bob Arum ever slow down? Even Steve Jobs took a recent break.
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Arum is amazing. He and his staff are tireless.
Stacey: (Blacksburg VA)
D'bama, is Yuriorkis Gamboa a future world champion waiting to happen at Featherweight? Or yet another Lacy, Miranda and such; with mega voltage, a thin beard and just enough defense that he gets exposed?
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Gamboa can defintitely win a title in this watered down era. The question is can he hold it because of the things you mentioned.
Steve (NYC)
Natural followup: Why can't King promote in Jersey?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
He had his license revoked years ago because of the IBF scandal.
Dan (Brooklyn, NY)
If the Clottey/Cintron fight indeed happens, will you still go to Youngstown or will the better undercard draw you to MSG for the split PPV?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
I think at this point, I am probably headed for NYC.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Forgive me Lord Dan but I need to ask a potentially banning question: Is Bob Arum in the Boxing Hall of Fame and if not, if/when would he be eligible for enshrinement?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
Yes, Arum is in the HOF and has been for years.
Alec (Nashville)
Dantonio Danderas, how exactly does one get a Top Rank PPV? I have never seen one on Comcast, so I am unsure what channel it would be on...
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
It would be on your In Demand station that carries others PPVs like UFC or WWE.
Chicker (Toledo Ohio)
Do you ever see JCC Jr. competing at the highest level/world title at 154?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
No.
Tim (Denver)
Have you heard anything on the Mike Alvarado front? Poss title shot? next opponet?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
Nothing is set for Mike at the moment, but he may fight on the Feb. 21 PPV card in New York. Here's another tidbit for the hungry Freaks -- Arum and DiBella have been talking about a possible fight between Alvarado and Malignaggi (although that wouldn't be on the February card, it would be later in the year).
Kent - St Catharines
What sort of legal rangelings happened that DK can't promote in New Jersey?
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
It's called Google. Use it.
Slick, Philly
How much longer can Pavlik avoid a fight with Abraham before he becomes the madatory?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Ummmm, he won't be a mandatory. They both have titles dude.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, know your a big Ray Leonard fan but after him who's the best welter you seen fight in your times following boxing?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Probably Whitaker.
mrmarksmith
Dan-the-Man!, in the buildup to his fight with Calzaghe you had a great dialogue with RJJ. Since then have you talked with Roy about his future? And if he fights again would Dawson be a possibility?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
I haven't talked to Roy since the fight, but he's been calling DiBella about wanting to fight Jermain Taylor.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Dan: Did you read Thomas Hauser's new article on HBO Boxing? In my humble opinion, he is way, way to harsh on the network. He basically ignores HBO's great 2009 schedule.
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
I agree. It's one thing to go off, but the timing was really poor considering that there won't be any HBO PPVs until May at the earliest and that the network is putting together one of the best first quarters of the year I've ever seen.
Jesus (NYC)
Why don't people mention Celestino Caballero when the talk about Jr featherweights? To me he beats everyone in that division.
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
He gets mentioned, especially after his impressive knockout of Molitor.
Bruce: Alexandria
Obvious bonus of the Houston card: if John and Marquez win, it can help promote a rematch!
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Exactly. That is one of the interesting aspects of the show. I am pumped for that card.
Rob (NYC)
Any word on when the Cotto tix will go on sale and for how much?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
There is a news conference on Tuesday at MSG with Cotto, Jennings, Pavlik and Rubio to announce all the details of the show. I am sure ticket prices will be announced as well as an on-sale date.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Do you know if the Erislandy Lara fight will be televised tonight?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
I think his bout is a swing fight, meaning it would make TV depending on what happens in the other fights.
pdemps (stl, mo)
dan, how do you feel about showtimes decision to can steve albert for gus johnson? i feel like steve deserved better.
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
I was a little surprised. I have a hard time believing it was voluntary thing from Steve, but I have no inside knowledge of it. I can say this though -- Steve is one of the best guys you could ever meet, just a total gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor.
Jeff (OH)
Why did Showtime decide to replace Steve Albert? He was one of my favorite announcers in the business.
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
I have no idea.
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
By the way -- I just checked my various press releases and the MSG tickets for Cotto-Jennings card are priced from $50 to $500.
Jeff (Phoenix)
Wlad's recent string of opponets are very legitimate but they have all looked petrified and gone into a defensive shell...some more than others....didn't any see what Corrie Sanders or Sam Peter did? Why don't they open it up and try to wear the man out?
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
I assume because they don't want that massive right hand or stiff left jab coming back at them when they are open throwing punches.
Joe: San Francisco, CA
Did Showtime "can" Steve Albert? The quotes from Albert in the press release made it sound as if he wanted to take a break.
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Press releases are often nothing but spin.
Oscar( Dallas)
Any news with Librado Andrade? I would love for him to fight a guy like Edison Miranda or Sakio Bika.
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
He may end up facing Vitali Tsypko in an eliminator with the winner getting Bute. There is a purse bid for that bout coming up.
Joel (NY)
Dan, so its confirmed we will see JCC Jr. back on PPV March 7th? What are the chances you think Edwin Valero gets signed to Top Rank and shows up on that card?
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
Haven't we already covered the fact that JCC is on PPV? Don't make me ban you. If Valero signs with TR, he will be on that card. Whether TR signs him or not depends on the deal. It's being worked on but nothing is done, so relax.
Staw Kerr
Danomite, what do you got going on this weekend?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Thanks for your concern. Probably will watch FNF tonight. Mrs. DTM is out of commission because of the wisdom tooth extraction yesterday, so a quiet weekend. I may spend some time cataloging some of my gazillion uncataloged DVDs and then Sunday -- Giants-Eagles baby!
chris
thoughts on the Monty Meza-Clay vs. Jorge Solis fight? is Meza-Clay in over his head, or a legit competitor agains solis?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
I think it's a good matchup, but you have give Solis the edge just because the bout will be in Mexico.
Jeff (OH)
Have you heard anything about the Versus Network putting on a boxing card outside of the Contender anytime soon?
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
Nothing has been settled as far as I know but from what I have heard, even if Versus does more live boxing, which I hope they do, it probably wouldn't come until at least spring or summer.
Tim (Denver)
Mr. "R", back to the possible Alvarado and Malinaggi. After the arse wupping Hatton gave Paulie is he now just a gate keeper for the up n comers? Or do you think he has a legit chance against a Holt, Torres, Bradley?
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
He has a chance against any of them, but he needs to box and be able to use his hand. The hand injuries have taken their toll though. It all depends on if he can ever get his hand into good shape. If you can't throw punches, you're in trouble.
Joe, RI
I'd be honored if Don King held the 2/14 fight in my basement. My Mom will make Nacho's for all the freaks.
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
I have already offered my lovely backyard, which has plenty of room for a ring and a few hundred spectators. Not to mention, I have a shed that could serve as a dressing room and a patio for VIPs as well as a deck to seat the media.
Jeff (Phoenix)
Dan, as you stated earlier the list of foes for Adamek is limited at cruiser. Will he shed a few pounds and chase the big names at light heavy or put on a few pounds and move to heavy.....with his style his money making days are short!
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
He already was at light heavy and weight is an issue, so I don't see him going down. And it's not like there are big fights for him at heavyweight either. He should just stick with cruiser and become a dominant champion. There are some good fights for him at cruiser, just that the biggest opponents for him are not available for February or the money to make those matches is not there for the February card.
Scott (NJ)
Did HBO pick up Larry Merchant's option?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
Nothing official yet, but all indications are that it will be.
Neal Joliet, IL
I was in the minority in that I thought Kirkland's performance in his most recent HBO fight raised more doubts than it did raise him. I think now is the perfect time for the LC to go get him
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
I don't disagree.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, after Manny/Hatton fight is it safe to assume that both fighters stay at 140 or if Floyd is in the mix does either go to 147 or maybe a catchweight
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
I do think both would stay at 140 unless something really significant presented itself at 147.
Dave (NJ)
Dan, who do you have for Hardy/Edge and Cena/JBL? Lets gooo hardy!!!
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
Hardy and Cena baby!!! Love Hardy.
Roy Jones Jr
Dan, you should have that fight in your backyard. I'll handle the promotion. $15,000 for ringside seats, baby!
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
What is this nonsense about Roy Jones reaching out for a fight with Jermain Taylor??? Is he is financial straights? There is absolutely no reason he should fight anyone anymore, let alone a beast like Taylor who would annihilate him.
Grey (Cape Cod, MA)
Dan, did you hear that Tommy Morrison has a fight in a small town in Wyoming coming up? Ridiculous.
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
Yes, pathetic.
Hank (LA)
Will there be a Hatton/Pacquiao 24/7?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
If the fight is an HBO PPV event, I would sure hope so.
Brandon (Arlington, VA)
DTM, a yard big enough for a ring in Northern VA? Kudos my friend!
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
LOL!
Braindamaged2too...(Asylum)
DTM, With all the talk of Steve Albert who are your top blow-by-blow guys, analysts/color commentators, and best boxer-turned-announcers???
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
There are lots of good guys. Joe Tess and Teddy Atlas on ESPN2 are outstanding. I think Nick Charles and Steve Farhood are a terrific team on ShoBox. Al Bernstein is always good no matter how bad a fight is. Barry Tompkins and Rich Marotta really know their stuff. Bob Papa is a real pro, Max Kellerman has vastly improved over the past few years. As good as they all are, to me, Lampley and Merchant are the best ever at what they do.
Courtney, Orlando, FL
Dan, why do you give David Haye such a hard time for being a loudmouth, but you go lightly on Paulie Malignaggi. Isn't it Haye's mouth that has put him next in line for Klitschko?
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
Part of it is in jest, but also, Haye talks so much smack but has never accomplished one thing as a heavyweight.
Neil (MD)
I saw Roy Jones Jr might fight Jermain Taylor? Is that something serious or just rumor.
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
Settle down. Roy has simply been calling Lou DiBella asking about a fight with Jermain. That's it.
Tyler (Lincoln, NE)
Do I have the best fiance ever? 18 months ago she couldn't stand to watch boxing. Now she is a HUGE fan, almost as big as I am. She even suggested we take our honeymoon in Las Vegas during a big fight weekend so we could go to our first fight together!!!
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
Excellent. Congrats.
Tommy(Detroit)
Is there any one person you enjoy talking shop with?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
There are a lot of people in the business I like talking shop with.
Lennox Lewis
You definitely forgot about me, Dan.
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
Absolutely.
Brock (Belleville, IL)
Time for an age old question. Any news on BHop or Joe? Is retirement in either of theirs immediate future?
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
I'm sure Bernard will address his future in his ESPN chat this afternoon as well as in the studio on FNF tonight.
Matt (portland, OR)
Big Boss Dan what was your favorite KISS album when everybody came out with solo albums?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
Ace.
Sultan (Seattle, WA)
Is Chris John VS Rocky a done deal?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
Ummm, yeah. You ever check out the news headlines on ESPN.com's boxing page? I suggest you do so son.
Marc, Potter, Wi
Joe Layden just authored a book about the Tyson-Douglas fight. He thinks that when Tyson went down for the count that boxing also went down with him, at least as a sport followed by the American public. I thought he overstated the case. What say ye?
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
I think if that is what he wrote, it's a huge overstatement. I haven't seen the book yet but apparently some of my work and interviews with Tyson are quoted in the book, so I will have to check it out.

The Sultan of Stupid, Come on down!
Grant (San Diego,CA)
With Sergio Martinez fighting in the 14th, who else will be on TV along with Berto-Collazo on the 17th?
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
Just one bout on TV.
Ryan (Fairport, NY)
Dan-O, there is a ______% of a RAD next Saturday night.
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Hadn't thought about it but maybe I'll do one.
Banishment
New Year's Resolution for DTM: Ban more people!!!!!!!!
bubba ottawa,il
What up dan? I am stoked for the mosley-margo fight, what kinda chance to you give sugar shane? I like his chances alot. Friday night fights are back baby
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
Of course Shane has a chance. I think he's faster than Margarito and he has always showed a great chin. He just can't himself dragged into a war or he's in trouble.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, I know G Johnson is fighting on FNF's soon but any chance we can see him in a big $$$ fight instead of a stay busy fight?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
Warriors Boxing, his promtoer, is trying hard. But none of the big guys want to fight Glen because he's dangerous as hell and he doesn't bring big money.
Corey from(WestWick)
If Berto wins next week that will be huge for him. Collazo is ranked.
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
If Berto wins, it will be -- by far -- the best win of his career so far.
Colin(Eden Prairie, MN)
Why doesn't ESPN bother to broadcast FNF in high def? Its seems absurdly overdue at this point. Are there any plans to start?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
Good point. I think it's probably a budget thing as well as the fact that many venues where fights take place may not be usable if they had to do it in high def.
Thad (Los Angeles, CA)
Speaking of fiances Dan, get this. My fiance and I watch Cunningham-Adamek and she loves it. Then I sit her down through the early Tyson fights marathon on ESPN. Next thing I know, she's talking to all my friends about how good Tyson's defense was and if only he would have stuck with his jab and checking the fight schedule. Amazing.
Yorkis (Philly)
I wouldn't pay $5 to see Cotto fight Jennings. Jennings may not even land a punch.
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
So keep your money.
Mike (NYC)
Is Saul Roman set as Albert's opponent for next weeks FNF?
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
No. There is still no opponent yet.
Jason (DE)
Analyze my freak status. I'm cutting my 1:00pm interview for a potential new hire short, so I can ensure I'm back to my desk before the Hopkins chat ends.
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
Impressive.
Second Hour of the Chat
Banishment get ready - the crazy questions should be coming soon........
Joe (Stamford, CT)
This is the first I'm hearing of the Steve Albert thing. Bad news. Is Al Bernstein staying on, or is he out too?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
No, Al is staying. Fear not.
Pat (NY)
Ossie Duran pulled out?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
He was never officially in/
Joe (NYC)
Why did Showtime dump Ferdie Pacheco way back when?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
He had run his course and was awful.
Christopher (Staten Island)
Hey Dan, were you shocked when the Chris John/Juarez fight was announced in the U.S. or did you hear rumblings before it happened?
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
I had heard it was being dicussed when there were issues with the Luevano fight, but I have to admit, I was a little surprised it actually got done. But I was happy it did.
Ron (DC)
Dan, what do you think of Saul Alvarez? I saw him on Telemundo last month and was very impressed.
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
Good prospect. I was going to include him in my prospect roundup from the year-end stuff, but he just missed the cut.
Charles (Philly)
DTM, will you be ringside for the 2/6 FNF in your neck of the woods? Or are you flying out to Vic-Arce that weekend?
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
I won't be going to Vic-Arce but I may head up for the FNF show in Maryland. It's a long drive because it's way out there in Maryland. I'll play it by ear.
Pat (NY)
I tried looking to find some fights with Jennings. No luck. Can you please describe his style for us that dont know?
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
Unfortunately, I have seen a number of Jennings fights. Just an average British fighter. Decent size for the division, not a big puncher. Not too fast. Decent skills. If Cotto is not really damaged from the Margarito loss, he'll smash Jennings.
Mike(Charlotte)
You dont seem pumped about the Vic-Arce fight, any reason? I love the matchup
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
I like the matchup just fine. I am glad it's happening. I just wish it had taken place about a year or so ago. After seeing Arce struggle so badly with Concepcion in the fall, I think he's a little shotsky at this point and that Vic may crush him.
Dale (MA)
When is John Ruiz fighting again? I need to be cured for Insomnia.
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
Things were going along so nicely and you have to bring him up. Are you looking to be banned?
Pat (NY)
Then who did Jennings beat to get this shot?
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
I believe it was your mailman.
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
Hold on a second, Bat Phone.
Dan Rafael (1:26 PM)
I'm back.
Franklin Seattle, WA
What up D$---hey there was a boxing book that you and the freaks have mentioned here. Said it was an excellent read. Can you remind me of the title please??
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
Four Kings is what you are probably talking about. It's George Kimball's book about the Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran ere in the 80s.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
Over/Under 3 rounds for Gamboa tonight?
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
Over.
Dan (Nutley, NJ)
Planning on going to The Contender finale this year?
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
TBA.
rob (jersey)
John/Juarez = late XMAS present (IMO)
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Exactly.
Patrick (Woodside, NY)
Will the Ring 140 belt be on the line in the Hatton/Pacquiao bout?
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Of course, as long as the bout is at 140.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
There is no way Winky is fighting Williams! Winky will find an excuse (money, injury, or weight) to get out of it. Winky doesnt want to be a fighter anymore.
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
You're wrong about this one son.
Freaks
Get well soon, Mrs. DTM!!
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
She says thanks.
Brian, (Iqaluit, NU)
Hi Dan, will you be ordering the PPV of the Ruslan Chagaev vs. Carl Davis Drumond "WBA Championship" bout?
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
Yes, because that is what I do -- I watch and cover boxing for my living.
Mike(Charlotte)
Kyle- Banned
rob (jersey)
Dan-o Happy Friday! All I can say is Welcome Back FNF - we've missed ya....
Joe Greene (Stay-of-Execution-ville)
Pissing blood never felt like such sweet relief!
George (Lebanon, NH)
Was the batphone a Vegas site update for Pacman-Hatton?
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
No.
Brian (NYC)
sounds like a rough couple of months for Joe Greene, kidney stones then maybe Kirkland? ouch
Ricardo (Bronx, NY)
King Freak, wife has a bad toothache Big D does the chat anyway...will he outlast BHop again?
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
With ease.
Marc, Potter, Wi
Just had a kidney stone attack Monday. I'd rather be executed. They hurt bad!!!!
Dan (Nutley, NJ)
If you were an oddsmaker, how big of a favorite do you make Clottey over Cintron, should that fight happen?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
I would make Clottey a good favorite. 3-1 maybe.
Matt (Washington, DC)
Dan, pound for pound question for you. Is removing Winky from the rankings an automatic response to inactivity or do you actually question whether he is still top 20 P4P? Can we legitimately consider Williams-Wright a fight between two top 15 pound for pounders?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
Activity is important to a degree. He hasn't fought for 18 months while other guys were fighting. Just because you are on the list does not mean you are entitled to keep it if you don't fight.
Tony (ATL)
Dan, what word would you use to describe the heavyweight division from 2004 to present?
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Crap.
Lance: (Washington, DC):
Driving Mr. Dan- It would be my honor to chauffeur you to the Maryland FNF in exchange for a 10 minute boxing conversation and some DVD copies of Hagler-Hearns, Hearns-Leonard, and Castillo-Corrales I.
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
That's a little weird.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Dan, What is your feeling on Gus Johnson taking over the blow-by-blow for Showtime?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
I wish him the best.
Matt (portland, OR)
Anything new from Allen Green? Or should I check my milk carton?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
Who?
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Dan, If Winky blows out Williams will that be considered a big upset? And what would be the next opponet for Winky if he did win?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
If he blows him out, it would certainly be a surprise.
EBay
Were auctioning off Driving Dan to a Maryland FNF in 30 minutes...
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, do you think either Margarito or Pavlik have trouble making weight for their next fight....I think the scales are going to be trouble for BOTH?
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
I think both guys struggle to make the weight, but Margarito, from what I hear, is pretty heavy.
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
We have minor breaking news.
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
Courtesy of the Bat Email: The cuiserweight title bout between titleholder Giacobbe Fragomeni and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, which was supposed to go to purse bid this afternoon, didn't because they settled. Fight will be in Italy on a date to be determined.
Jeff (Phoenix)
Dan, Arreola reminds me a little of an up and coming Michael Grant...Wlad may want to embrace the Lewis doctine and pulverize him now so he doesn't reach his potential.
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
At least Grant had beaten some solid contenders before getting the title shot. Arreola hasn't beaten anyone in the top 10.
Roger (Boston)
Commander Rafael, do you think that we will get to see JaunMa-Penalosa in 2009? Is it solely money keeping it from happening right now?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Who knows. Penalosa is a bit nutty with his demands. Sort of the Filipino Winky.
Braindamaged2too...(Asylum)
You're saying an offer to swap a chauffeured limo drive for boxing chat and dvds is weird? Weird is the members of the John Ruiz fan club or any so-called boxing fan who thinks that the various alphabet org.'s are good for boxing. Weird is why doesn't it become mandatory that Nicole Schlerginzer sing the national anthem at every major Vegas fight.
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Good point.
Christian Cage
Hey Dan are you pumped for my return?
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
Yes!
Matt (Washington, DC)
Dan, are you hinting at an outside possibility that Margarito doesn't make weight in a couple of weeks? Man, that would be devastating to boxing fans.
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
Not at all. He'll make it. But it will be hard as hell.
Michael (Toronto)
D-$, I hate to challenge you...but doesn't DK promote Cunningham and Agbeko? And wasn't their Versus card in Newark, New Jersey?
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
Let me clarify -- yes, DK co-promtoed that card. DK can't promote in Atlantic City because the gaming board revoked his license. He can promote elsewhere in New Jersey.
David (PA)
OK, Dan, BHop is saying over in his chat that the only fight he wants and that matters to him is a rematch with Joe. Looking into your crystal ball, what do you think are the odds that we actually do see this rematch?
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
Slim and none.
E (Detroit)
DTM, in terms of Ring recognizing Margo-Mosley, it seems to me the big factor isn't Williams, it's that Mosley lost to Cotto. If Mosley wins, wouldn't it be awkward to call him the true champion? And if Margo wins, aren't we just one fight (Margo-Cotto II) this spring away from crowning a champ anyway?
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
When Ring editorialized about it, it was Williams cited as the reason.
E.L. Trujillo (Mile High City)
Just got my floor-level tickets to Diaz-Marquez. What's the atmosphere like in the Toyota Center? Hopefully, we'll run in to eachother?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
I've never been to the building but I plan to be there Feb. 28 and I am excited about it.
Ted (R.I.)
Has B-Hop ever bought you dinner?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
No, but I did attend his retirement dinner a few years ago in Vegas at the MGM.
Andres (Chula Vista, CA)
Any update on Abner Mares; also, which network is most likely to carry Andre Ward's next fight and is it still likely to take place in Feb?
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
The good news about Abner is that, from what Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez told me this week, his eye is OK and he'll be able to fight in April.
Dan (Nutley, NJ)
I don't mind the Ring's decision, because Mosley isn't a clear-cut number 3 to me. He KO'd Mayorga eventually, but he struggled in that fight. Clottey is right there with him, in my opinion.
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
And Margarito already beat Clottey in a clear decision. ESPN and Ring both have Mosley third and Clottey fourth. Cotto is No. 2 in both rankings and Margarito drilled him. So why hold up the title when No. 2 was just knocked out by No. 1 and your rules clearly state that 1 vs 3 is acceptable in certain instances? It's insane not to make Margarito-Mosley for the title.
Ricardo (Bronx, NY)
What about BHop vs. Glen Johnson? I think if anyone can push BHop its Glen, Glen needs a name and it can be viewed as an eliminator. True, that both would have to yield economically.
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Last I checked, BHop already knocked Glen out.
Aaron (West Fargo, ND)
Does anyone know what channel Azteca America is on for Direct TV subscribers? Or if it is even part of the package?
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
It is definitely on DirecTV. It's in the 400s.
Roger (Boston)
Quick scoring question: If in a round fighter A pummels fighter B for 2:30 of a round in a clear 10-8 round, then fighter B scores a flash knockdown right before the bell, but fighter A is clearly not hurt. Is this automatically a 10-9 round for fighter B. Or is it a 10-9 or 9-8 round for the fighter that clearly got the better of the round? Basically, the same scenario of Round 4 of the Cunnigham-Adamek fight.
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
Under that scenario, I gave the fourth round to Adamek, 10-9.
Brian (DC)
Did you ever have any direct conversations with Schaefer and/or Arum about the horrible effort they put into the DLH-PAC undercard?
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
Yes. I told them what I thought.
Adriel: Anaheim, CA
I just saw Margarito and he looked in awesome shape. I say no problem making weight.
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
Good to know.
Bernard Hopkins
I WON'T BE OUTCHATTED BY A WHITE BOY!!!!
Joe: San Francisco, CA
What are the chances that we get a decent undercard beneath Hatton-Pac due to all the bad press about recent PPV undercards?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
Hopefully, pretty good.
Josh (Alexandria, VA)
Dan, where are you in NoVa? I'm in Alexandria on Comcast and TV-AZTECA is listed as both 198 and 616 on my channel lineup.
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
Wow. I am in Fairfax Station and may have to move there.
Garth (CT)
Hey Dan, How do you like the ESPN website? I prefer the old layout myself. Boxing page link is no longer directly on the home page.
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
I'm getting used to it.
Ricardo (Bronx, NY)
11 years ago BHop KO'd Johnson, dont you think we're looking at different fighters now? In a time where they need or can use each other to make a fight?
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
True, it was a long time ago, but I have no idea what Hopkins' motivation for the fight would be even though Glen is clearly a different fighter now.
Matt (Philly)
Does Garth not understand the internet? You move your mouse over "all sports" and then click "Boxing"...It's one click!
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
Exactly. Garth is a little slow.
Adriel: Anaheim, CA
Azteca America is channel 54 as well on direct tv.
Andres (Chula Vista, CA)
Any chance Jorge Linares fights on US TV anytime soon?
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
I wish. His lack of activity is very depressing.
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
OK, Freaks, have a great weekend. Enjoy the new blog and news stories as well as tonight's premier of Friday Night Fights. I'll chat with you next week from Bristol, Conn., where I will be for my appearance on FNF. Have a great weekend. Peace.
