Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Greetings, Fight Freaks from the lovely Hartford, Conn., airport Sheraton. I'll be heading over to ESPN later to appear on tonight's Friday Night Fights, so I hope you tune in. Anyway, we have much to discuss. HBO kicks off the new year of boxing tomorrow night with Andre Berto-Collazo, ShoBox returns tonight and there are lots of fights coming up. Keep an eye out for the big notebook today also. Let's get to it.
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - Kirkland/Julio...Khan/Barrera...my mouth is watering.
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
Mine too.
Geraldo (Dale City,VA)
Khan vs Barrera - Can't wait to watch it, but not sure if Khan is ready for a faded Barrera yet. In your opinion does the harm outweigh the good for this fight for Khan?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
I think it's a risky fight for Khan. I know Barrera isn't what he was but keep in mind his two losses in a row were a somewhat competitive loss to Marquez and then whupping from Pacquiao. Khan is not near either of them, although Barrera has only had one previous lightweight fight. I think it's a very interesting fight.
Chris (Denver, CO)
Barrera knocks out Khan. Calling it now.
nick ( Perkiomenville Pa )
Great stuff as usual with regards to your blog on the price for Nate Campbell to try to unify all the belts. It really makes me sick to always read about how the Alphabet organization would rather make the worst possible fights just to collect their pound of flesh instead of the best fights, any rational minded person can come to the conclusion that it's better for all involved, but most importantly to boxing to attempt to make the best possible fights out there. Not only don't they do it, but they don't even try to act like they want to and the ones getting hurt in the end are us the fans.
Billy (Patchogue, NY)
Please clear the confusion: what's the deal with Sergio Martinez's fight on Feb. 14th?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
Santos pulled out the day after he accepted and now Martinez will fight Cintron on that card on HBO.
Jr San Jose
Will we ever see boxing on free TV(ABC,NBC or CBS) again?
Dan Rafael (12:30 PM)
I believe that, yes, at some point we will. Not sure when, but I do think so.
Jay (San Francisco)
In honor of the just announced Khan/Barrera fight and Ricardo Montalban's passing, I think a nice long KHHHHHHHAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN is appropriate.
rob (jersey)
I know I'm being greedy but I'd love to see the Gary Russell fight tomorrow night too!
Dan Rafael (12:31 PM)
You are in luck. It will open the ShoBox telecast.
Brett. Chicago
Hi Dan, Is Top Rank's Aztec America series definitely going forward past these initial 5 shows ? Any word on the sceond series or outlet that both Bob Arum and Todd Debeuef were mentioning ? Thanks
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Not sure about the supposed second series, but, yes, the Azteca deal will be more than five shows. Arum told me yesterday that there is a press conference next week in LA to announce the deal, which will start with a minimum of 25 shows.
Vasyl Lomachenko
Am I still the European Love Child?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Always.
rob (jersey)
Dan - will we be blessed with the first RAD of 2009 tomorrow night?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Sorry to say, but no.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, w/Cintron fighting Sergio where does Clottey turn to?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
I was on the phone with Top Rank matchmaker Brad "Abdul" Goodman this morning when I arrived in Hartford and he told me there is a possibility that Clottey may stay on the show and face Soto Karass. Not done but it's possible.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Holy Macro, Dan-o! The Julio/Kirkland, Marquez/Diaz, and Angulo/Mayorga cards are unbelievable! Big props to HBO and the promoters!
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
I couldn't agree more. The promoters are stepping up and HBO is as well. All good all the way around.
Ortiz, CHicago
DTM any word on the site for Camp-Funeka and Angulo-Mayorga?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Yes, it will take place at the BankAtlantc Center in Sunrise, Fla., home of the NHL's Panthers. Don King worked it out a couple of days ago.
Rags
Did Mr. Goodman mention anything for Mike Alvarado? Word in Denver is that he's fighting on 2/21....
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Abdul said what Arum and DiBella told me yesterday -- that Alvarado may be on the Feb. 21 show and face Paulie Malignaggi. I think that is a terrific matchup for the ppv.
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
Don't call him Mr. Goodman. Call him Abdul.
bill (pgh)
is it just me or am i reading "Sergio Mora passed on the fight" an awful lot these days.
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
You're reading a lot of it.
Choco, New Jersey
Bad move for Alvarado, Paulie is way too slick for the slow punching Alvarado.
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Sink or swin for Alvarado if it happens. Good test for him and good test to see what Paulie has left. I think it's very interesting and hope it happens.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Cintron and Santos are kinda interchangeable, anyway, so it's still a very good fight against Martinez. Can't wait!
Rick, Marina, Ca
Whats up Dan, sorry I missed the 1st 2 chats of the new year. Its looking like a good year so far Kirkland and Julio, Barrea is gonna take Khan to school. Will Barrea and Khan be on US tv?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
Barrera-Khan TV plans are not set so not sure if there will be US TV. At worst, I would hope the card would at least be available on ppv here.
Steve (NYC)
Any word how the Pavlik simulcast will work at MSG for the fans going to see Cotto?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
From what Top Rank says, fans at MSG in the seats will be able to watch the live fights and following the Cotto fight the Pavlik bout will be shown on big screens in the arena.
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
Likewise, fans in Youngstown will watch a card of live fights and then be able to see Cotto on screens before their main event.
Aaron (Hartford)
Any word from Alfonso Gomez ? Did he take his million dollar purse and head for the hills after the beating he took from Cotto
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
He's been offered various fights, according to the Contender folks but has not accepted them for various reasons.
Frank(Phx)
Dan, all these fights that Bob Arum is putting on the Feb 21st card seems to be definately worth the buy. Besides the Cotto and Pavlik bouts, which others will be televised??
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
It's not 100 percent set but here's the way it looks -- Pavlik in the TV main, Cotto in the second to last fight. The other two fights will come from either Clottey vs. someone (maybe Soto Karass), Alvarado-Malignaggi or Anthony Peterson-Edner Cherry. I expect we will also see highlights time permitting of Matvey Korobov and perhaps Bastie Samir, two outstanding prospects and 2008 Olympians.
Joe , Baltimore MD
does dawson vs tarver 2 have a site at this time? thanks
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Yes, back at the Palms in Vegas, site of the first fight. That is what Gary Shaw told me this week.
Guido, Berlin, Germany
Greets Dan, there were rumours of Arthur Abraham fighting Australian Daniel Gaele. DO you have any verification or other news?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
That is Arthur's likely opponent on March 14, but to my knowledge it is not a signed deal yet.
Carlos (Funky Town, TX)
Would it be out of the question to have HBO pick up the Barrera vs Khan fight and put it on delayed coverage before the weak Dawson vs Tarver fight?
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
I was thinking about that idea yesterday when the Khan-Barrera fight was announced. Not sure what HBO thinks about this but there are a lot of factors -- productions costs, license fee and HBO's prime time schedule. No idea if it's realistic.
bill (pgh)
what's the deal with PacMan-Hatton 60/40 or 50/50?
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
It's all the minutial of negotiating. Arum told me yesterday that he believed it will get done. It's a lot of posturing and typical nonsense but at the end of the day both guys cant make near the money fighting anyone else in May than they can against each other, which is why it will get worked out. Do not worry.
Pancho, Los Mochis
Any word on how Abner Mares' health is progressing?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
He's been cleared to train, his eye has healed and he should be back in the ring around April.
Geovany (San Diego)
Hey Dan, even though I love the fight, not sure if Julio/Kirkland is the right fight for Julio, I favor him in this fight but another L in his column would really hurt him... Do you think this is the right fight for him?
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. It's a fantastic fight. I think both guys can win but I lean to Julio being unbiased. I see him as the more experienced fighter (by a ton), he has decent defense and good power. Kirkland has never fought anyone nearly as good as Julio. It will be explosive I am sure and of course, Kirkland has great power also. Can't wait for it.
The Fighter of the 2000s, 2000-2010
Only a year to go.... tentatively, who do you have... Hopkins, Mayweather, or Pacquiao?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
That's an interesting question. Hadn't really thought about it but all three have cases. I'd have to spend some time and really examine their records for the decade. Off the top of my head, I think I might lean to Hopkins.
Matt (Naperville, IL)
Whatever happened to Caballero vs Gamboa? Is that still scheduled to go through?
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
No, the networks weren't too into it, so Caballero is making his mandatory and Gamboa will be on ShoBox in early April.
Dan (Brooklyn, NY)
Since no one's asked it yet - who's your official pick tomorrow night?
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
Berto.
Joel (NY)
Dan, any update about the Edwin Valero top rank situation?
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
Nothing is done yet. I believe there is a purse bid today for the Valero-Pitalua fight.
Paul B (NY, NY
Notebook's up
Tomas(Tx)
Robert Guerrero vs Edel Ruiz isnt the best fight for Guerreros first 130 pound fight. He should breeze by him easily. But I guess you gotta walk before you can crawl right?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
Hey give the kid a break. Robert hasn't fought in almost a year and is in a new weight class and the fight is not televised. Jeeeeeez.
Matt H (Phx, az)
Dan, please tell me where your chat wraps go! With the horrible new ESPN set-up, I cannot find anything except your blogs. It is bad.
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
Good question. I believe they are in my archive.
John, Denver
Dan, how is Mosley's training going with Hopkin's trainer running things?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
To hear Shane and Nazim Richardson talk about it, great. Both guys spoke to the media yesterday on a conference call and had nothing but great things to say -- shocking right?

Dan: When is ESPN THE MAG going to wise up and start publishing your notebooks in the back of the magazine with all the other sports?! One more way to reach the average/casual fan...
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
No idea.
Bubba from ottawa il
Dan, was watching bowe-holyfeild 2 yesterday, where you there? And what was your first mega fight you seen live? Mine was bowe- holy 3 at ceasars palace...I NEVER FORGET IT.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
No, I was not there. Way before my boxing beat days. I was in college. My first fight as the beat writer for USA TODAY was Lennox Lewis vs. Michael Grant. The first fight I consider a really major fight that I covered was a few months later -- Mosley-DLH 1.
Choco, New Jersey
Dan, any reason why Gamboa would decline to take a winnible fight against Rojas for a title? DO his handlers think he is not ready?
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
I believe they think he needs more seasoning Rojas is a very tough fight and they know it.
Mike (RI)
What would happen if Povetkin loses to Estrada? Does he still get the mandatory?
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Unlikely.
Rags
FREAKS UNITE...let's start emailing asking for Dan's notebook in THE MAG!!!
Jonathan P (FL)
Dan - please settle this arguement between my friend and I - in your opinion, is Kostya Tszyu a HOF'r? I say that he's not even though he has an impressive record. He was KO'd by Vince freaking Phillips! And Hatton just mauled him. So he beat Zab and a washed up Chavez - big deal. Am i way off base here?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY of base. I was almost about to ban you as a total moron, but I think you are being sincere in your question. Tszyu was a great amateur (won the world amateurs by beating Vernon Forrest), had only two losses, to Phillips (who was damn good in his day) and in his last fight to Hatton. He fought a lot of quality opponents, beat them all with relative ease and became the first undisputed 140 champ in like 25 years. He's a lock first-ballot HOFer in my mind and I will vote him in.
TJ (Owings Mills, MD)
Robinson Dano....just wondering: Who did you have winning the Hatton-Collazo fight?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
I was ringside for that fight and I had Collazo winning a very close decision. I sat next to my man Brian Kenny and he also had Collazo winning.
Matt H (Phx, az)
Thanks "All Chat Archives" person!
rob (jersey)
Incredibly exicted about a Julio Diaz/Katsidis fight on FNF.....has WAR written all over it...
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
Let's hope it happens.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
LOL @ Darcynian's quotes! Hilarioius.
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
He's a pisser.
Rick (UK)
Dan what do you think was Roy Jones' best performance at light-heavy weight?
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
I would say Virgil Hill or Montell Griffin rematch or Reggie Johnson. Totally dominated all three, who were very good fighters.
Chris (Denver, CO)
If I remember correctly, Tszyu was having shoulder problems and already contemplating retirement before the Hatton fight.
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
He was off for a long time because of the injury before his rematch with Sharmba Mitchell.

Danimal Cracker.. Darchinyan said he could picture Arce running around on a fake horse in his house... TRRREEMMENDOOUUSSSS!!!
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, do you think a prime Tszyu would have beaten Hatton?
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
I do.

Dan: What was your first post-college (paid) writing gig?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
I worked at The Saratogian, a tiny little newspaper in upstate New York near where I grew up. I worked there from 1993-1996.
sosgutta nyc ny
if clottey does land on feb 21 card will he fight in nyc or ohio? who is his oppenent?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
If Clottey goes, it will be on the NYC card.
Mike (NYC)
What do you think of Josh Clottey's response to Kermit deciding to take the fight against Sergio Martinez instead of fighting him? He basically called him a coward.
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
Clottey is off base. Cintron took a tougher fight at a heavier weight -- but he's getting a lot more money. I don't blame Cintron for taking Martinez one bit over Clottey.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
I second what Rags is proposing. With the style that you employ for your notebooks, I think being published in the MAG would absolutely attract casual fans...
RahJohn (Dirty Jerz)
Dan - I like David Haye but he's in over his head challenging the Klitchkos. Who should he fight next and who should train him?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
He's going to likely wind up facing Wladimir for better or worse. He is trained by Adam Booth and not making a change any time soon from what I would gather.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, love the idea of G Johnson/J Taylor but don't see how a win propels either one to anything afterwards...is it only for a payday...can you explain?
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
I think you are off. If Jermain beats a light heavy who is so respected it does him a lot of good. If Glen beats a young guy he's really back in business. And Glen is trying to make the most money at his age, and that fight would provide that among the possible fights being talked about for him. Good fight.
Weekend Weather Report (Key West, FL)
High of 70 and Sunny... still loving those fights in the CT?
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
There are no fights here and it's about 7 degrees.
Rags
Dan: If this works out and the MAG breaks down due to a MONSTER influx of emails from the FREAKS, will you hire me as your agent!? :-)
Dan Rafael (1:13 PM)
I already have one but appreciate the support.
Andrew (Nashville TN)
Which is more legitimate: the WBA's investigation into the Valuev/Holy results, or OJ's search for the real killer?
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
OJ.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
I would love to see Diaz vs. Katsidis on Versus!
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
I'd love to see it also, but for obvious reasons would rather have it on ESPN2.
Ryan (Richmond)
Julio-Kirkland is an outstanding BAD card. How do the budgets of BAD, Shobox, and ESPN's FNF compare?
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
ShoBox cards are generally $50,000 with some exceptions for bigger fights. ESPN2 pays about $30,000 per show with some slight fluctuations here and there. An HBO BAD card at the top level could run from the mid-six figures into the $1 million-plus range.
William (Austin, TX)
Lieutenant Dan - Even though he probably should not be fighting again, any rumors on Roy Jones Jr opponent for thepossible March 21st fight?
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
Roy is trying to do a fight on that date but I have no heard about opponents.
Ali (Glasgow,Scotland )
Can I just say Happy Birthday to Bernard Hopkins who is 44 today .
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
Bernard's birthday was yesterday. Today is Roy Jones' birthday, turns 40. Happy birthday to both of them.
Andy (Seattle, WA)
Considering RING has declined to make Margarito/Mosley for the RING championship, doesn't this dispell all thoughts Golden Boy was going to corrupt RING when they bought it?
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
I guess that could be a silver lining. But if you want to go all conspiracy you could say they didn't do it because they believe Mosley will lose and didn't want a Top Rank fighter to have the title. In other words, that has nothing at all to do with Ring's decision either way. They made a decision to do what they think is right, That's fine. I just don't agree with it.
Jorge, Detroit
Dan, what do you think of Andre Ward v. Andre Dirrell?
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
Bring it on. Match of 2004 Olympic teammates and medal winners.
Paul Germantown, MD
Please..PLEASE tell me that Feb.14 card will replay sometime after, i dont think i'll be able to get out of my plans.
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
First off, tape on your VCR or record it on the DVR. Barring that, HBO replays all of its cards the following morning, again on Sunday evening and usually again on Tuesday night on HBO2. There is also HBO On Demand. If you have HBO and a DVR there is no excuse to ever miss a show.
Brian, Detroit
Even though Cotto's got KO'd, he didn't get knocked out, if you know what I mean. Do you think he left his fragile-chin days behind him at 140?
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
I know what you mean. I Ithink he did. I think his supposed chin issues at 140 had a lot to do with being weak making weight.
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
I think we could see Kirkland's first pro loss against Julio. Kirkland has only marginally better defensive skills than Gamboa in my opinion. I see a Julio KO in the first half of the fight.
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
Certainly a distinct possibility. The Golden Boy folks know it's a very dangerous fight.
Steve, Sac, Ca
Dano, Rubio has a _% chance of upseting Pavilk?
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
15%.
Dave, NJ
Note to the freaks- The Azteca America card this weekend with Castillo will be fought on Saturday but will air on Sunday at 9pm. Hopefully they won't cut to an infomercial like they always do if the telecast goes beyond 2 hours...
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Exactly -- Azteca America is showing it on delay while Azteca in Mexico will have it live.
Jon (DC)
You going to any of the inaugural festivities?
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
No way. It will be total insanity. I will be safely tucked away in my house about 20 miles away.
Brock (Belleville, IL)
I haven't watched WWE in years but sometimes I wish that some of their "stipulation" matches got crossed over to boxing. My proposed match: RJJ vs Holyfield at some agreed upon weight with the loser retiring.
Joel Julio
Sorry Dad, I had to go against your wish and fight a southpaw.
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
I know, I know.
Barack Obama
I don't blame you, DTM. It's gonna be cold too! I wouldn't go if I didn't have to...
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
I have DishLatino Max, so I get Azteca America from Mexico and get to watch it live!!!! UPGRADE FREAKS!!!!
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
Nice. I may have to get that too. How does that work?
Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)
Dan-a Montana (sorry best I could come up with) Has the Mexicutioner lost his mind? Am I wrong in thinking Hatton is being more than fair with 50-50?
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
I agree. Frankly, I think Hatton deserves more money -- he's the champion and he brings way more to the table because of UK PPV money.
Dan Rafael (1:32 PM)
Pacquiao and his team are insane if they don't take 50-50.
TB youngstown
thinking about buying a ticket to the Pavlik fight on Feb 21 do you know who will be on the undercard?
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Not sure exactly yet but maybe raul Martinez, maybe Mario Santiago (the featherweight contender who drew with Luevano), maybe hot prospect Bastie Samir.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
How much are the Sanctioning fees for the differnt sanctioning bodies?
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
Generally 3% of the purse.
Berndawg
Another Bastie Samir reference. I'm kvelling.
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
Settle down.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Will you be attending the Marquez/Diaz fight in Houston? Sounds like it's gonna be a good event.
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
I plan to be there and can't wait.
Joel NY
Dan, basically all the top rank fights on 2-21 are coming from MSG?
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
Let's go over this one more time to be clear -- the PPV will have four fights (plus maybe some highlights of other bouts). Three of the live fights will be from MSG. The fourth TV fight will be from Youngstown. Are we clear?
Lance: (Washington, DC):
Danimal- I'm the guy who last week offered a ride to Maryland for FNF in exchange for fight DVD's and boxing talk with you...I should have been clearer...I own a limo company and was offering to drive you (and the Ms. if she wanted) there. Didn't mean to weird you out, sorry!
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
I'm glad you cleared that up!
E (Omaha)
D$$ - Watching the coverage of that US Air flight yesterday make you even more leary of flying? Perhaps you should petition ESPN to get you a bus ala the Madden Cruiser. You could call it something like the Freak-U-Bus
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
I was not real happy seeing that yesterday knowing I was flying today -- and on US Air. But all went well and I even have the double upgrade.
Tim (St. Paul, MN)
Hatton really pulls down bigger PPV numbers than Pacquiao?
Dan Rafael (1:41 PM)
In the UK, Hatton does huge numbers. Manny's fights are not on PPV in the Philippines but in Theaters, But because of the differences in economies in each country, Hatton generates way more money.
RahJohn (Dirty Jerz)
Should Steve Cunningham fight again before getting a rematch with Adamek?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
Of course. That rematch is not happening any time soon.
Tim (St. Paul, MN)
Ok, but count in the USA numbers (which I'd imagine dwarf the Phillipean and UK numbers). Hatton is still a bigger draw?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
What matters in making the deal is overall cash and Hatton brings more, a lot more, period.
Dave, NJ
Dan do you know when the 2nd edition of the overseas Best Damn Fight Night will be aired and which bout it will be?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
I do not know the exact date but it is supposed to be the Balszy-Inkin super middleweight title bout from Germany from a couple of weeks ago.
Mike (Chicago)
Any Opponent yet for Adamek's 2/27 fight?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
They are working on Jonathan Banks.
Steve, Sac, Ca
Dano, buy or sell. Say Pavlik beats Rubio, he then will fight Sturm in the summer?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Buy.
Armando (Nj)
What's the latest on my main man: "Swamp Donkey"
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
Nothing that I am aware of but I would love to see him on ESPN2 in a main event.
Robert, LA
Dan the man... Read your schedule, is Barerra still fighting in the end of January or is he just going straight to the Khan fight? Thanks
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
I spoke to the folks at Don King's office yesterday on that exact situation. They say he is still fighting Jan. 31. It is on my schedule on ESPN.com.
Tommy(Detroit)
I know both are god-like in their countries.. but who is more beloved in his.. Pac or Hat?
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
Have to say Manny. In England, they love Hatton. In the Philippines, Manny is a god.
rob (jersey)
"Defeating Arce won't take much training. It won't even be a fight for me -- more like pest control." Classic Vic....
Zach MPLS
Dan, with there being less tv dates for boxing available this year why is top rank still putting J.L. castillo on tv dont other top rank fighters need exposure, and is an exclusive deal between top rank and azteca mean we will get more cards like versus had to put up with ie tye fields, yuri foreman
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
The Azteca shows are in Mexico for the most part. Castillo is on the undercard and they share the shows with Zanfer Promotions (Fernando Beltran's company). I don't see the problem.
Jackson (IA)
Dan...seems as though OT has just become a given. It's been a while since someone said thanks...so...thanks!
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
Thanks.
Darian (Phoenix)
I like that idea of stipulation matches in boxing. I read that Sam Peter would like to fight Arreola with the loser giving up the nickname "Nightmare". Spices things up a little bit
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
I like this subject. Who has other stipulation match ideas (keep 'em clean)?
Mrs. DTM, at work
I want to hear more about Lance's limo company!
KL:
While we all give huge props to HBO for it's lineup in the first few months of the new year, do you think this could lead to the budget getting stretched thin for the rest of the year (and more PPVs in the fall as a result)? It's hard to imagine it playing out any other way, unless they've increased their overall budget or all the fighters are more realistic about their purses...
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
I think they'll be just fine. They haven't gone crazy with what they are paying so the budget probably is in decent shape. Just enjoy the good lineup.
Aaron (Hartford)
Duddy- vs Lee- each has to drink a pint of Guiness in between rounds....
Brutus The Barber Beefcake
How about a hair vs. hair match? I'm Thinking Valuev would HAVE to be included...
Eric (Fayetteville, AR)
Dan the man of a thousand nicknames, have you and Larry Merchant come up with any more no-way-only-in-your-dreams fights like DLH\Pacman that are sure to become a reality once you mention them?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
I'll let you know when the time is right.
Sheila ( Chicago )
SuperDan so does the Mrs watch every fight with you is she a true fight fan??
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
She watches some here and there. She is amused a little by boxing and likes it in small doses.
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - Roach v. Nacho...loser gets thrown under the De La Hoya bus!
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
Classic!
Chris (Salt Lake City, UT)
Dan- How do you go about deciding which pictures to use for the notebook? I mean, do you really need to keep using that picture of Cotto looking like he just got mauled by a cougar (the cat kind)? Surely you have a better one.
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
LOL! I don't pick the photos.
David (Old Bridge, NJ)
How about a Calzaghe-Hopkins rematch..if Joe loses, he has to wear a t-shirt that reads "I lost to a 44 year-old" for a month. If Bernard loses, he has to wear a t-shirt that reads "I lost to a white boy" t-shirt for a month.
Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)
Dan, remember Oscar vs Hector Camacho? They made a bet that if Oscar lost he'd give Hector some cash, but if Camacho lost, Oscar would be able to cut that ridiculous curl off his head. Oscar won but macho didn't pay up.
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
I remember it and I was ticked off that Camacho reneged.
Eric (Fayetteville, AR)
How about this for a stipulation, No Hold Barred falls count anywhere match WBA prez vs WBC prez vs IBF prez vs WBO prez vs Ring mag prez, winner becomes the sole sanctioning body for boxing champions. How many freaks are showing up at that fight to make sure ring magazine wins?
Timmy, (Chi-town)
Gotta love the Vic commentary/antics in the notebook, a boxer dropping a "Toy Story" reference....he's good for the sport with that mouth.
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
Vic is up there with Miranda as trash talk goes.
Raul (SFO)
Holyfield-Valuev rematch. First one to fall asleep loses.
Neal Joliet, IL
Aren't Victor Ortiz and Vivian Harris both using the "Vicious" moniker? If so, the fight's already made so put it on the line!
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
LOVE it.
Duff (Abington,MA)
Calderon v. Valuev in a Rey Mysterio- Big Show type matchup.
bruce torrance,ca
dano, as of right now, who do you think wins the bradley vs holt fight?
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
Interesting matcup. I lean to Bradley and look forward to the fight.
mike costa rica
dan, did they agree where the fight would be mgm or thomas and mack center yet if it happens??
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Yes, Arum told me (assuming the fight is finalized) it will be at the MGM.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
How about Paulie Malignaggi v. Sergio Mora in a KO-only match?
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
I would last 50 rounds.
Dave, NJ
Dan will you be on ESPN News before the FNF telecast today?
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
No.
JP (Columbus, OH)
How about in Iron Boy's fights, he spots his opponents 8 points before the fight.
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
He's still win.
Hal (Memphis)
Yo Dan. Any news on James Toney's plans? (And no, I don't mean his dinner plans, so don't go there.)
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
For lunch, I think he's headed for Jerry's Deli.
Aziz (Newcastle,Uk)
DTM!! Hope you are good. I'm hoping that Barrera isn't as shot as de la hoya was v pacman; i really admire barrera and hope he is competitive in the fight
Dan Rafael (2:08 PM)
I think he has a chance in that fight for sure.
rob (jersey)
Steve Albert v. Gus johnson - winner keeps the Showtime job.
Bert (Minneapolis)
If Prez Dan was being inaugarated this week. How many weight divisions would boxing have?
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
As much as I'd like to go back to 8, I would probably have about 10 -- keep cruiserweight and maybe one or two other junior divisions.
nick, germany
Hey dan... Thanks for all the chats! Can you tell me the breakdown more or less of how every dollar is distributed in a standard $49.99 HBO PPV (and the $10 for Hi-Def)?
Dan Rafael (2:12 PM)
Pretty easy. The cable and dish operators get about 50% of the gross. HBO usually gets about a 10 percent distribution fee. Then the promoter pays the fighters their guarantees and the rest of the expenses and keep what is left. If it gets to the threshold for a fighter to receive upside, they split the money however they negotiated once the PPV reaches the overage number.
Mike (NYC)
Is there a real chance Hatton/Pacquiao if it gets finalized ends up on Showtime PPV, or will HBO offer the big bucks late and put it on there PPV?
Dan Rafael (2:14 PM)
There is no deal yet but I think ultimately, it winds up on HBO PPV. They do PPV the best by far.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Any reason for why Santos pulled out?
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
He said he couldn't make the weight.
David (Old Bridge, NJ)
How about Lennox Lewis vs. David Diaz...loser is banned from using his favorite word (Absolutely and F%#@, respectively) for a month ?
Dan Rafael (2:16 PM)
Awesome.
Ricardo (Bronx, NY)
Winky vs. Joe C. vs. Roy Jones...losers must STOP PROMOTING
John (San Fran formely D-town Texas)
Dan, I moved to SF and my schedule is crazy and my timing on the chats is off so i have missed several in a row...please forgive. Count one e-mail to the editor petitioning for the Notebook in the Mag from me. I'm pumped for a great HBO show tomorrow night.
Dan Rafael (2:16 PM)
You are forgiven.
Randall (tampa)
I watch the mayweather gatti fight the other night. and when they showed a close up of cotto. i saw you in the background just typing away. where you working 4 espn that fight?
Dan Rafael (2:17 PM)
Yes.
Steve, Sac, Ca
Dano, how big of a building is ESPN's?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
It's not one building. It's a whole freakin' campus of many buildings. It's quite impressive.
Bubba from ottawa il
Dan if we get the collazo that fought hatton we may be in for a good fight, you agree?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
I think it's a good fight regardless.
Joe (Clovis, NM)
If you believe Jack Loew, and that Pavlik was not 100% for the Hopkin's fight, you think if Arum knew that he would have called off the fight?
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Pavlik wasn't healthy for the fight. That was known the week of the fight. Arum also knew.
Pancho, Los Mochis
Who is Ricardo Maldonado? he just won the Valero-Pitalua purse bid.
Dan Rafael (2:21 PM)
A promoter in Mexico. He's probably best known for his involvement for years with Barrera.
Mike(Charlotte)
Almost at 2 hours chatting. There is no other high profile espn writer or not that would set this time aside for their own freaks. You are the Man Dan
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
I do love the Freaks. Besides, what else do I have to do? It's 7 degrees outside and I'm in an airport hotel room.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
How much of a factor was Pavlik's health in determining the outcome of the fight?
Dan Rafael (2:24 PM)
I don't think a huge one. The way Hopkins fought, had Kelly been healthy maybe Hopkins would have 8-4 or 7-5 instead of 12-0.
Armando (Nj)
Dan - how much do Barrera/Morales hate each other - everytime one is asked about the other in the interview, they have nothing but real negative things to say - you would figure that by now there would be a mutual respect.
Dan Rafael (2:24 PM)
They bitterly hate each other.
Jason, Canola, FL
Dan, any word Vanes Marytosian?
Dan Rafael (2:26 PM)
Yes, he's on the Feb. 7 Darchinyan-Arce undercard in Anaheim (but not part of the Showtime telecast).
Dave, NJ
Dan how much do you think Arum will charge for the 2/21 PPV? The economy isn't any better than it was 4 months ago.
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
I am not certain but I think either $39.95 or $44.95.
Billy (Patchogue, NY)
I'm ignorant to why Barrera/Morales despise each other. What's the reasoning?
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
Sort of a Mexican class thing -- Barrera was from a well off family, Morales was poor. Plus they had three vicious fights. Micky Ward once told me after his trilogy with Gatti that when you go through those kinds of wars with a guy you have two choices, you can either like and respect your opponent or hate him. Gatti and Ward opted to become good buddies. Not the case for Morales and Barrera.
Michael (Toronto)
DTM, I looked up Tszyu's record and I have to agree with you. He fought a LOT of solid guys in their primes. And he didn't start his pro career with dozens of tuneup fights -- he started doing 10-rounders against solid opposition basically immediately and never stopped.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, could all-time greats from years ago fight today and be just as dominant due to weight classes ex.Ray Rob, Henry Armstrong...does this hold true for all divisions up to 175 lbs?
Alex(Windsor,CT)
listening to Nazim Richardson during a fight is like listening to yoda or Obi wan. If he trained more fighters, i have no doubt he would be considered one of the best
Dan Rafael (2:30 PM)
Nazim is an excellent trainer and good man.
Chris M., Toronto
Which big, pre-2007 HBO fights would you have been most interested in seeing 24/7s produced for???
Dan Rafael (2:31 PM)
There are a lot, obviously. I would have wanted to see one for Trinidad-Vargas. Obviously, for some of Oscar's biggest fights. Barrera-Hamed, so many..
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Could you give an approximate number to how much more Cintron would be making for Martinez rather than Clottey?
Dan Rafael (2:32 PM)
I don't know the exact total but to fight Clottey the total package for him and his promoter would have been about $125,000. I suspect that for the Martinez fight it's probably closer to $200,000.
Luis (Bronx, NY)
Dan, I actually convinced my boss to let me use the internet on fridays only from 12-3pm in exchange for not taking lunch...Freak Status?
Dan Rafael (2:33 PM)
That's strong.
George, California
Andre Berto is going to be one of the next great Welterwieghts. I think he needs one more year before we throw him in with the Margaritos and Cottos
Dan Rafael (2:36 PM)
If he beats Collazo, I think it won't be that long until he has an even bigger fight. I could see him maybe facing a Zab Judah, maybe Mosley win or lose against Margarito (especially if Mosley loses in a competitive fight).
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Any more news on a proposed Winky-Paul Williams fight?
Dan Rafael (2:38 PM)
Nothing new other than I am told they are putting it all to paper and it's going to happen.
Nate (Palmerton, PA)
Hey Dan, I just picked up tickets for the finale of "The Contender", any chance you will be in attendance?
Dan Rafael (2:38 PM)
Not sure.
weber, east windsor, nj
dan, my heart is racing, please tell me how optimistic i should be that cotto-marg II is at MSG on the eve of PR-Day??... would margarito agree to fight in such a hostile environment being that he beat cotto???
Dan Rafael (2:39 PM)
For the right deal, Margarito would fight a guy in his living room.
Dan Rafael (2:41 PM)
FYI Freaks -- I have just been given the update via the Bat Email. Margarito-Mosley is approaching 17,000 tickets sold. It's going to be crazy next week.
Dan Rafael (2:42 PM)
18,177 is capacity. It will be a sellout I think.
Zo (AZ)
But Dan, I thought boxing was dead? (please note the sarcasam)
Dan Rafael (2:42 PM)
Exactly.
George W. Bush (Oval Office)
Dan, I just wanted to thank you for all your chats over the years. Fridays sure do get boring sometimes in the White House. You're a great American.
Matt (Naperville, IL)
Would Carlos Quintana be better by 2/21 to face Joshua Clottey? I forget why he pulled out of his fight that was supposed to be tonight. Injured ankle?
Dan Rafael (2:44 PM)
Injured ankle yes. Plus, Quintana isn't going to make 147 anymore -- moving up for good.
Cory (Carmel)
If you had to take one of these Dan, what would it be? Golota nut shot, Holyfield headbutt, Lennox uppercut, or a Tyson bite and spit?
Dan Rafael (2:45 PM)
Tyson bite.
Guido, Berlin, Germany
Watching your divisional rankings, I found TBA with almost any fighter in the hot supermiddle weight division. Any news on opponents for Kessler, Bute, Froch and the likes?
Dan Rafael (2:47 PM)
All TBAs. Bute may face Mads Larsen next. Froch is talking with Taylor. Kessler, who knows?
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Do you find it inappropriate that people still continue to rank Paul Williams at 147?
Dan Rafael (2:47 PM)
Yes. He has not fought there in recent fights and isn't going to fight there next.
Pat (NY)
Yo Dan can you break down that Berto pick? Who has Berto faced to convince you that he is on Collazo's level?
Dan Rafael (2:48 PM)
I think Andre's speed/power combo is the difference. Some have knocked Berto's chin (even though he's been fine other than one knockdown) but Collazo is not a big puncher.
Kelby (Omaha)
Dan, Have you seen any video on Michael Jennings? Im heading out to NYC for the fight and am curious how game he is.
Dan Rafael (2:50 PM)
I have several of his fights and I have never been impressed at all.
Christian (Mile High City)
Has Juanma vs Penalosa been finalized? Any idea who might be showing it? Who ya got??
Dan Rafael (2:51 PM)
The fight is very close from what I hear from Top Rank and Penalosa's manager. If it is completed it will be on HBO in April. You have to like Lopez in the fight.
Tyler(Pomona,CA)
Dan, I ran into you in the elevator at MGM for Mosley-DLH 2. I was 14 back then. I see Mosley destroying Margarito in 11 rounds. Am I stupid?
Dan Rafael (2:52 PM)
Destroying? I don't see that.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Dan, you are killing me. I'm going to be late for my next meeting because you are still going. Whatever, the meeting can wait.
Dan Rafael (2:53 PM)
And there are a lot more questions in queue and I have nowhere to be for a few hours.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Margarito-Mosely, I've got my tickets, can't wait. The TJT fans will be out in force.
Herman, New City, NY
Hey dan i wanted to konw y isnt JCC JR in your divisal rankings. is it because he hasnt fought a big name?
Dan Rafael (2:55 PM)
He hasn't even fought a medium name. He has fought absolutely nobody.
Jmerms (NYC)
How are your fingers not falling off?
Dan Rafael (2:56 PM)
I'm Superdan.
Stu (Philly)
You say Gamboa turned down a tough fight for a title, but isn't a fight against Prescott, a tough one too? Especially considering Gamboa has no defense at all.
Dan Rafael (2:57 PM)
Gamboa is not fighting Prescott, who is two divisions above Gamboa. They may be on the same card, not against each other.
blake (arkansas)
what % chance do you give taylor froch being made?
Dan Rafael (2:58 PM)
It seems unlikely right now unless the Froch folks get into financial reality.
Mike NJ
Dan, Where were you when Foreman knocked out Moorer?
Dan Rafael (2:59 PM)
In my bedroom at the house I grew up in jumping around so loud and going so crazy that I woke up my mom and sister, who were none to pleased and did not appreciate the moment like I did.
Bert (Minneapolis)
When will America get to see Devon Alexander on TV?
Dan Rafael (3:01 PM)
I wish I knew.
Cory (Carmel)
Danimal does Bob Foster beat Evander and Moorer at LHW?
Dan Rafael (3:01 PM)
He would kill Moorer. Holyfield, tough tough fight. Foster was awesome. I have gotten some nice videos of some of his fights. He was great at 175.
Diego (Gilroy)
if JMM beats Juan Diaz will he wait for a Pacquiao fight or will he fight Nate Campbell? I think he should go for a Campbell fight cause it looks like a Pacquiao fight wont happen this year.
Dan Rafael (3:03 PM)
He wants Pacquiao but if it's not there for him, I could see the Campbell fight happening.
Billy (Patchogue, NY)
Do you hope the excellent ticket sales for Margarito/Mosley is a wake up call for Golden Boy to explore other venue options besides Las Vegas? I like that Marquez/Diaz is in Houston. I just hope we get more of the same. Only the major fights should be going to Vegas.
Rags
Does VERSUS Network have anything else in the immediate pipeline as far as boxing goes?
Dan Rafael (3:05 PM)
At the moment, the only thing on the sked is the rest of the Contender series and the live finale. After that's over, I hope the network will announce some more fight dates.
Mike NJ
Dan Rafael vs Kimbo Slice...loser shaves their beard
Dan Rafael (3:06 PM)
Come on, I only have a small goatee.
John (Grand Rapids, Mi)
I still can't believe there isn't more money to be made @ Wembley or Manchester for a Hatton vs Pacquiao fight, I guess the time change for US TV is the kicker.
bill (pgh)
can you if/when the following fighters may be in the ring again?: Paul Spadafora, John Duddy and Andy Lee?
Joe (Boston)
And while I'm here put me down for Collazo by UD.
Jmerms (NYC)
Dan, my friend just bet me 100 dollars that Andre Berto would win. What do you think?
Dan Rafael (3:07 PM)
I think you need to go get your money to pay up.
Diego (Gilroy)
Golden Boy wants to put a show in San Jose for a HBO triple header with Kirkland, Ortiz, and Guerrero what are the chances it may land there? cause I'll go for sure.
Dan Rafael (3:08 PM)
Pretty darn good.
Dominic (San Francisco)
Dan! 2009 was looking like slim pickings for the freaks back in December, but as of now I'd have to say it's shaping up to be a banner first half of the year! I'm excited!
Dan Rafael (3:09 PM)
These things have a way of working out. You never know when stuff will get made that is good.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Will the Guererro undercard of the Margo/Mosely be on tv?
Dan Rafael (3:09 PM)
No, but perhaps HBO will show clips of it.
Brett, Chicago
Hi Dan, does Bob Arum have anything planned for David Diaz ? Any chance of a fight with either of the Peterson brothers down the road ?
Dan Rafael (3:15 PM)
Nothing in the works for Diaz right now but I doubt we'll see him with either Peterson.
Courtney, Miami, FL
Dan, Hopkins vs. Hagler at 160?
Dan Rafael (3:16 PM)
I always used to say Hagler but I am not so sure, especially after seeing how well Hopkins did at 175. I think Hopkins may outbox Hagler.
Dan Rafael (3:16 PM)
I always used to say Hagler but I am not so sure, especially after seeing how well Hopkins did at 175. I think Hopkins may outbox Hagler.
Eric (Fayetteville, AR)
D$, starting to approach the 3 hour mark, are you gonna try for the record?
Dan Rafael (3:19 PM)
I don't know what the record is.
Hector New York NY
trinidad margarito 147?
Dan Rafael (3:23 PM)
Awesome fight. Maybe have to go with Margarito.
Diego (Gilroy)
Whats next for Rafa Marquez? Last i heard he was looking at a Caballero fight.
Dan Rafael (3:25 PM)
Unfortunately, there is nothing that I know of right now. It won't be Caballero because he's is doing his mandatory.
Tom (Mich)
What happened to Jirov? Is he retired? Haven't heard about him in a while.
Dan Rafael (3:29 PM)
He's around but hasn't fought in ages. He's been talking about fighting again.
Diego (Gilroy)
People are getting it twisted, they keep saying Santos mopped the floor with Margarito way back. how did you score it? cause I had it for Margarito
Dan Rafael (3:31 PM)
I actually thought Margarito was slightly ahead when it was stopped and sent to the cards.
John, Denver
Jirov/Toney was like something out of Rocky
Dan Rafael (3:31 PM)
One of the best fights I have ever been ringside for.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Just got back from a meeting and we are still going!!?? You truly deserve your DTM moniker. Thanks for a great chat. Aaron Pryor vs Floyd?
Dan Park Unknown
HEY DTM who was the fighter of the decade in the 90s?? was it tyson?
Dan Rafael (3:35 PM)
No way. Either Roy Jones or Evander Holyfield.
Fletch (Pittsburgh, PA)
You're like BHop. Got done with work and you are still chatting? Amazing.
Dan Rafael (3:36 PM)
And the questions are still coming in.
Alec (Nashville)
Dan, did you hear about Collazo's newest tattoo? Berto is going to put a big "Reyes" on his forehead!
Dan Rafael (3:36 PM)
Good one.
Brian (scottsdale, az)
I understand that Glen Johnson has gotten hosed in a few decisions. But in the fight with Chad Dawson, I had it a draw and my friend had it 8-4 for Dawson. am I missing something here?
Dan Rafael (3:36 PM)
I think it was very. very close. Great fight. People see different things.
Kory (Missouri)
Dan i agree that Margarito/Mosley should be for the ring title because if mosley wins then he'll be ranked 1, and margarito would be 2. Thefore, the only way the vacancy could be filled would be to have them fight again which would be silly since they would have just fought.
Dan Rafael (3:38 PM)
I do agree it should be for the Ring title but if Mosley wins, Margarito could fall lower than 2 depending how the fight goes.
John (ATL GA)
I think in your notebook quotes, you should always have an Arum quote. I want to make a desktop calander with his quotes
Dan Rafael (3:39 PM)
I could probably do that because I always have a lot of Arum quotes that are amusing.
Eric (Fayetteville, AR)
Gotta go with RJJ as fighter of the 90s. Completely dominated at his peak, and in his prime was easily the most athletic fighter in history. Could do things no other fighter could do.
Tony(Tampa)
Whats up Dan, A little late to the chat but better late than never. Ran into Jeff Lacy at a New Year's party in Tampa and he was kinda mum on his future prospects. Have you heard any word if he is continuing his career or cashing out now..?
Dan Rafael (3:40 PM)
Jeff has a lot of thinking to do. I'm not sure he wants to fight if he will just be the opponent, which is close to where he is at this point.
E (Omaha)
D$$ - You ever thought of one day starting a chat when the first scheduled ESPN chat of the day is starting and outlasting all the other guests? That would be Jack Johnson-esqe, it'd be like chatting 50 rounds!
Dan Rafael (3:41 PM)
Not a bad idea.
Robert (Bronx, Ny)
Dan, Tough for writers to score fights at ringside when they miss some of each round typing away?
Dan Rafael (3:43 PM)
Not at all. I can type without looking at the keyboard and i save most of my typing for between rounds.
Kory (Missouri)
Dan do you have a favorite fighter to interview?
Dan Rafael (3:43 PM)
Yes.
MIke
Santos is no longer fighting Martinez on Feb. 14? Who would you have picked?
Dan Rafael (3:44 PM)
I barely like making picks in fights that are happening and now you want me to pick a fight that is not happening?
Sal (Chicago)
Dan, Felix Trinidad was never the same fighter after Bernard Hopkins destroyed him, do you see the same thing happening to Cotto.
Dan Rafael (3:47 PM)
I have no idea. We may have a better idea after seeing Cotto against Jennings.
Rags
Is the BatPhone wireless or is it going to VM at the home office?
Dan Rafael (3:47 PM)
Bat Cell Phone.
Pat (NY)
Boxing is a craZY SPORT. 2 years ago we were talking about how dominant Lacy was and what a champion he will be. 2 years later he's considered an opponent.
Dan Rafael (3:48 PM)
Boxing is unforgiving. People should remember that when they see a guy like Oscar or Roy or Hopkins stay at or near the top for 10-12 years.
Kelby (Omaha)
Dan, I got pulled away from the chat for work issues and came back for the re-cap. To my surprise, you're still going. Your....a machine!
Dan Rafael (3:48 PM)
If you cut me, I bleed.
david - houston
A group of us already have our tickets for the Marquez-Diaz card. Who else might be on the undercard besides John-Juarez?
Dan Rafael (3:50 PM)
I'm sure you will see some of the Houston prospects like Hylon Williams and Jermel Charlo.
Kevin
Is Riddick Bowe a HOF'r in your opinion? He did have some memorable fights against some of the best (at the time), but his antics and refusal to face Lewis is how I'll remember him.
Dan Rafael (3:51 PM)
No way is Bowe a HOFer. NO WAY.
Grey (Cape Cod, MA)
Danimal, are you excited about Alexander Alexeev fighting a 13-1 guy from Argentina for some WBO interim cruiserweight title?
Dan Rafael (3:52 PM)
I am shaking in anticipation.
Paul Germantown, MD
Is kelly pavlik considering a new trainer since his meltdown against b-hop?
Dan Rafael (3:53 PM)
No. Jack Loew is in charge.
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
I put Collazo one notch below a Zab Judah. A very good boxer who gives us entertainment, however he is the big name that gives other up and comers the respectable victory on their resume. Collazo is a gatekeeper.
Steve (NYC)
Peter- Areola actually hapenning? Is Kevin Johnson going to be in a big fight this year?
Dan Rafael (3:55 PM)
The Peter camp wants the fight and has been talking to Arreola's people. So we'll see what happens. Not sure what they have planned for Kevin.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
There was a prospect from Cincinatti who had a really aggressive style that you mentioned before but I forgot his name. Can you refresh my memory?
Dan Rafael (3:55 PM)
Lightweight Adrien Broner.
Corey from(WestWick)
Big night for Berto tomorrow. If he wins it's a big step forward. I'll take Berto to win
Neal Joliet, Il
Danimal, gut feeling on the Pacquiao purse split situation? Does the fight go off or does Manny let his ego cost him his biggest money fight?
Dan Rafael (3:57 PM)
Everything will get worked out and the fight will happen.
rob (jersey)
Are you engergized to chat because secretly you've been listening to War Machine for the last three hours?
Dan Rafael (3:58 PM)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2ewVrRRSPE
Mark (LV NV)
Will you be going to the Gilbert -Brinkly card ?
Dan Rafael (4:00 PM)
Going? I'd rather go to a John Ruiz fight. I don't even want to watch that crap.
Rick (Saint Paul, MN)
Arreola-Peter would be a great crossroads fight. I think they're very similar fighters, lots of talent with very questionable work ethics.
Dan Rafael (4:01 PM)
I agree.
Dan Rafael (4:01 PM)
But Peter has faced MUCH better competition.
Jeremy (Boston)
Oh my god you're still chatting. I thought I missed it. Incredible.
Dominic (San Francisco)
You are the chat master! Every time you are going to attend a fight I always try and find you sitting ring side. I thought I saw you at Castillo-Coralles I, but I think I'm mistaken. Do they never put press in view of the camera?
Dan Rafael (4:04 PM)
They used to back in the day before I covered boxing but not now. We usually sit on the side the camera shoots into the ring. In other words, I generally sit behind the HBO announcers.
rob (jersey)
Eric Carr = best KISS drummer IMO....
Dan Rafael (4:04 PM)
I agree.
Dave Gavazzi (Brooklyn)
I WANT TO BE YOUR INTERN!
Dan Rafael (4:05 PM)
If so, first rule of thumb: Don't yell at me.
Diego (Gilroy)
Dan, whos a rising prosepect we should keep an eye on?
Dan Rafael (4:05 PM)
Go look at my prospect of the year story and you will see my list of the super 25.
Kevin (Chandler, AZ)
Did B.J. Flores accept the fight with Adamek?
Dan Rafael (4:06 PM)
No, he turned it down.
Don King
I just worked out a deal for Dan Rafael to be paid per word in these chats! Only in America!
Dan Rafael (4:06 PM)
YES!
DP (Los Angeles,CA)
I have a stipulation match. Pac vs Hatton, 60 to the winner, 40 to the loser. Makes a more interesting fight.
Dan Rafael (4:06 PM)
I agree. I love that idea. Real prizefighting. I have said that many times they should negotiate fights that are tricky like that.
Pat (NY)
Was there ever 1 main reason the Marquez and Morales never fought?
Dan Rafael (4:08 PM)
Morales never wanted the fight.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
How much control does HBO have over the fighters purse?
Dan Rafael (4:09 PM)
Only to the extent that the promoter bases the purse in large part on what HBO pays for the fight, but HBO has no direct involvement in what the fighter is paid.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Have you ever asked Arum and the likes about the "real prizefighting" concept? What's their response?
Dan Rafael (4:09 PM)
I asked him while ago and he dug it.
Mark (chicago)
I just came to read the chat wrap and see you're still at it?!?! I'm dumbfounded. Never seen a 4 hour Friday chat before, only heard rumors that it was possible...
Dan Rafael (4:10 PM)
Anything is possible in this great country of ours.
Ali (Glasgow,Scotland )
Dan in your list of 25 rising prospects you never put Nathan Cleverly or Kell Brook why ????????????????????
Dan Rafael (4:11 PM)
Because they don't deserve to be there. Not to say they are not solid prospects, but I do not view them as elite prospects.
Rich (Stamford, CT)
Impressive performance on the chat. The freaks give thanks. As much credit as Arum is getting for pricing the Staples Center to sell out on 1/24, he deserves some also for pricing the MSG tickets for Cotto resonably. You can get an excellent seat for $100, and a decent seat for $50.
Dan Rafael (4:12 PM)
Love him or not, one thing Arum really understands is how to properly price tickets for a fight.
David (NYC)
Dan, should we expect Bob Papa/Lennox/Max on the broadcast tomorrow night? Sadly, Bob has a little more time on his hands these days.
Dan Rafael (4:12 PM)
I believe so. That is the BAD team.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Dan who do you like in the Diamond-Demarco fight? I would still like to see Diamond maximize his talent?
Dan Rafael (4:13 PM)
Interesing fight. If Kid Diamond is in shape in in the right frame of mind, I think he's too much for Demarco.
mike costa rica
dan julio vs kirkland will that be held out east or west you think??
Dan Rafael (4:13 PM)
No idea. There is no site yet.
Craig D. Royersford, PA
DanielSon...What is the advantage for Cintron to take the Martinez fight as opposed to fight Clottey in a mandatory?
Dan Rafael (4:14 PM)
More money, less weight to lose.
Ali (Glasgow,Scotland)
really you don't consider Kell Brook elite did you not see his 1 round waxing of Kevin MacIntyre ?
Dan Rafael (4:15 PM)
So? Doesn't make him an elite prospect.
Court (DC)
Dan of all Dans, if you could pick one card already on the schedule to convince someone to be a boxing fan, which would you pick and why?
Dan Rafael (4:15 PM)
Feb. 14 HBO BAD -- three excellent matches, all of which could be exciting and competitive.
Bruce: Alexandria
Stipulation match: John Ruiz vs Derrick Gainer. Loser has to sleep for a year.
Devmann (Columbia, MD)
Hi Dan, have you heard of the fighter called Daud Yordan? He signed a 5 year contract with Golden Boy
Dan Rafael (4:16 PM)
I've heard of him and seen him once. He didn't make an impression on me. Now stop asking the same question over and over or you are banned for life.
Daian, Miami
Dan, What a year to be a boxing fan!!!! I dont remember getting a better quarter in years past. Kirkland vs Love Child.....that's a war
Aaron (Hartford)
Dan...I am in the airport and I can see you typing.... just kidding..that would be creepy..
Dan Rafael (4:19 PM)
It would be very creepy.
Steiny (NYC)
Dan, is this one of your top five longest chats ever?
Dan Rafael (4:20 PM)
It may be my longest.
Bryon (KC, MO)
Do you consider David Rodriguez to be HWY of promise?
Dan Rafael (4:20 PM)
No, not at all. He's not too good.
Luis (PR)
DTM, closing in on 4 hours. The freaks are happy!!!
Jon (DC)
More entertaining: John Ruiz, Derrick Gainer, Yuri Boreman, or Drying Paint.
Dan Rafael (4:22 PM)
What about math class, laundry, lawn mowing and going with my wife to a craft fair?
Mike(Charlotte)
Dan, my corner just threw in the towel, they said that if I hit the refresh button one more time, I may not make it to the next chat. I appreciate your time and hope we are in for a hell of a card tomorrow night. You are the biggest freak of us all
Dan Rafael (4:22 PM)
Thanks. Hope you enjoy the fights this weekend.
Joel (NY)
Always been curious, what goes into banning someone? How is it done?
Dan Rafael (4:23 PM)
Do you really want to find out?
Ant (uk)
Where can i find this top 25 prospect list? I can guarantee Kell Brook has had more impressive wins then many Americans on the list.
Dan Rafael (4:23 PM)
Look in my archive. Victor Ortiz was the prospect of the year. The story is there. Or goggle it.
Dave, NJ
What do you know about Carl Davis Drummond and could he pull the upset?
Dan Rafael (4:24 PM)
He's 26-0 against 26 stiffs.
Ant (UK)
Ok, I just looked at your prospect list and it's laughable to hear you see Kell Brook isn't there because he isn't elite. Please elaborate on the elite stature of Kevin Johnson and Andrade......ohh yeah, their American!!
Dan Rafael (4:26 PM)
You're an idiot. There are plenty of non-Americans on that list. Yeah, Andrade is only an amateur world champion and an Olympian. And Johnson is only a slick, excellent skilled heavyweight. Go look at the rest of the list you doofus. Fighters from Ghana, the US, Eastern Europe, all over.
John: (Phoenix):
If Doc Brown pulled up in the Delorian, what fight does he take you to?
Dan Rafael (4:26 PM)
Louis-Schmeling.
Billy (Patchogue, NY)
According to Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley will outpoint Antonio Mayorga next week.
Dan Rafael (4:28 PM)
Does that pick surprise you? He's picking the Golden Boy fighter, who is trained by his trainer.
Andrew, Toronto
Thanks Dan. I've smoked 3 fatties during this chat and its all starting to make soooo much sense man!
Kaseem (Trenton, NJ)
RJJ vs Hopkins circa 1998 at 175, who ya got?
Dan Rafael (4:29 PM)
Jones.
Zo (AZ)
Just ban the Antman. Geez, this guy talks of Kell Brook as the 2nd coming. What's it matter if he is considered an elite prospect or not. Let's see if he will ever be a champ, that's all that matters.
Kell Brook
Forget it Ant, come back to bed already...
John: (Phoenix):
Doofus? We going to play dodgeball after the chat?
Dan Rafael (4:30 PM)
Good idea.
Banishment
Ant smells tasty. It's been a long chat with no snacks.
Dan Rafael (4:31 PM)
I guess we can't go a whole chat without a banishment, so Ant, you're gone bud.
qadeer (newcastle,uk)
ant, youre a disgrace to you nation!! who cares about nationality?
Jon (DC)
Is it too much to hope for Malik Scott actually fighting a live body in a 10 round fight? He has potential, but his step up in competition is non existent.
Dan Rafael (4:32 PM)
Let him stay in eight-rounders. As someone said to me when I asked the question years ago why he was only in eights and not in 10s, the person looked me dead in the eye and said, "Why do you want to watch two more rounds of THAT?"
David (NJ)
DTM - do you see JMM as a HOF'er?
Dan Rafael (4:33 PM)
Yes.
Walter (Albuquerque, NM)
Mayweather/Margarito is the real dream match! Start talking about that instead the casual fight fans fake dream match Pacquiao/Mayweather.
Dan Rafael (4:34 PM)
I would much rather see Manny against Floyd than Floyd against Margarito if given the choice.
Matt (Santa Monica, Cali)
Lord Dan - Starting off my new year going to the fight next weekend at Staples. IMO, Sugar will give Margs everything he can handle....have a good time here in LA after your long fight you are dreading.
Dan Rafael (4:38 PM)
OK, Freaks, we have surpassed four hours and I need to get ready for FNF tonight. Thanks for a great chat, the longest I've ever done. Enjoy the fights this weekend, tune into FNF and check out the big notebook. Talk to you next week from LA, where I will be for Margarito-Mosley. Peace.
