Matthew Barnaby (3:34 PM)
It's been a while. Lot of bowl games and things going on. Happy New Year to everyone. Let's get started.
Zack Morris (Bayside)
Huge one tonight in San Jose Matthew, especially after Calgary pasted the Sharks last week. Do you expect the Sharks to bounce back in a physical effort?
Matthew Barnaby (3:35 PM)
Especially at home. This is going to be a great game. San Jose has not lost in regulation at home all year. Calgary is playing as good as anyone in the West. It will be a great game, but I think San Jose comes out on top.
do the bruins need to go out and get a veteran scorer with all the injuries that have been going through?who is a possible acquisition?
Matthew Barnaby (3:36 PM)
I think they stay put right now. They are still playing great hockey and with a win last night have shown that they can play with adversity. If they were ever to slide they might contemplate it, but as I see it now leave what's good alone.
Gooch (Bay Shore, NY)
Hey Matt, Which SportsCenter anchor would you like to beat up the most?
Matthew Barnaby (3:37 PM)
Definitely Steve Levy. He thinks he's so tough and knows hockey. We'll get him soon.
Det. McNulty (Baltimore)
Matthew great to see the Caps take it to Pittsburgh last night. What do you make of the blossoming Malkin/Ovechkin rivalry? Who would you rather have?
Matthew Barnaby (3:38 PM)
I would much rather Ovechkin. I think he's the most exciting player in the game today. His skill, his physical play and love of the game are second to none. The rivalry last night lived up to the hype and can't wait for the day these two teams play in the playoffs.
King (Howell, NJ)
The NY papers are reporting today that the Winter Classic next year is going to be at the new Yankee Stadium between the Rangers and Islanders. Don't you think it should be the Rangers vs. Devils since the Islanders are going to be awful once again?
Matthew Barnaby (3:39 PM)
That's where I think the venue should be for the next Winter Classic. To have it in the biggest city with great fans would be awesome. As for who would be in it, I would love to see the Bruins as it would make for two good teams and two Original Six teams playing.
Jeff (Boston, MA)
What's your opinion on the guys like Crosby and Semin fighting?
Matthew Barnaby (3:40 PM)
Every once in a while it's fun to see a star stick up for himself. I wouldn't want to see it on a regular basis, especially Semin, because he punches like a girl.
Tim: St. Cloud, MN
Will Marion Gaborik end up in a Wild jersey next year? His injury has hurt is value, and I am wondering if now the Wild can offer something he will accept.
Matthew Barnaby (3:41 PM)
I do not see him in a Wild jersey next year. His injuries have decreased his value not only in a trade but also on the free agent market. I still think Minnesota is not a place that he really wants to play because of the system.
Gooch ( Bay Shore, NY)
Hey Matt, Now with Barry back on set do you feel any pressure to upgrade your wardrobe?
Matthew Barnaby (3:41 PM)
Not at all. On the contrary, I might have to downgrade so we don't look too far apart. He's the old, I'm the new and we'll agree on a few things in the middle. He's a great guy and we're going to have a great time working together.
Matthew Barnaby (3:41 PM)
Oh yeah, no mullet.
Jim Chicago, IL
Should the Blackhawks stand pat at the trade deadline, or are there additions they should make?
Matthew Barnaby (3:43 PM)
They are a very exciting team and can surprise a few teams in the playoffs. I would love to see them add a little veteran leadership from guys that have been in the playoffs before. Playoffs are a different animal and it's always nice to be able to have a few guys that have been there before.
Hook (Southern Maryland)
How deep do you think the Caps can go in the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (3:44 PM)
Like the Blackhawks, another exciting team with a lot of youth. I still think they're a couple of years away from making a serious splash in the playoffs. Goaltending I think is their greatest concern.
Chris (Sunnyvale, CA)
Do you see any area that the Sharks are vulnerable at come April?
Matthew Barnaby (3:45 PM)
Not so far. They look strong from the coaching to the goalie. Every aspect of their game, they have confidence in and it shows on the ice. The acquisitions of Blake and Boyle and the emergence of Sedaguchi and the rebound year from Patrick Marleau will make this team as tough as anyone in the West.
Corey (Boca Raton, Florida)
Hello Matthew, any chance Avery will be bought out?
Matthew Barnaby (3:46 PM)
There is a chance, but I still think someone will give him a second chance. (third, fourth, fifth chance). If he was a cat, he would have died a long time ago, but this is the NHL. He's a good player and I think someone will take him off their hands.
so barnaby i was just watching some old school fights of you against flyers of old, who was the toughest you faced?
Matthew Barnaby (3:47 PM)
From Philly, the toughest I ever fought was Eric Lindros. I absolutely hated him but loved playing against him. Especially in Philly where the fans were second to none. Even with the death threats, it was always my favorite place to play.
Who's the best captain in the NHL right now?
Matthew Barnaby (3:48 PM)
Jerome Iginla to me is everything a captain should be. He battles hard. He's the go-to guy. He sticks up for teammates. Well spoken. Great in the community. Just a class act and a star player.
Do you see the Leafs fixing this mess anytime soon Matthew? I can't stomach Toskala much longer!
Matthew Barnaby (3:49 PM)
Brian Burke will surely turn this team around. This will be a much tougher and more physical team then they presently have. Ron Wilson holds these guys accountable and with a couple good years of drafting and a few trades to some veteran players will turn everything around.
David Silver (West Bev)
How about these Lecavalier rumors Matthew? Will he be moved?
Matthew Barnaby (3:51 PM)
This is a tough one. There is a division in management and ownership on whether to trade Vinny. Montreal is very interested but for the trade to happen I believe Markov would have to be part of the deal. To think that Richards, Boyle and Lecavalier might be traded in the same calendar year is crazy. His new contract kicks in this summer and in a few years if the cap goes down, this is a big number to have on your payroll. Having said that, Vinny I believe will stay a Bolt.
who is the best "tuff guy" in the league right now
Matthew Barnaby (3:53 PM)
It's a toss up between Georges Laraque and Derek Boogard. I would go with Derek, just because of how big and mean he is. Georges has a soft side, where Derek tries to kill you with every punch. I love being at ESPN where I don't have to worry about it.
Ron (las vegas)
Do you think Datsyuk is the best player in the leauge right now? Thanks, big fan of ya.
Matthew Barnaby (3:54 PM)
I don't know if he's the best player in the league, but you could definitely make an argument that he is. He does everything well from offense to defense to being a great team guy and knowing how to win. He would be on the short list if I was starting a team and had one pick.
Who is going to win the tight Atlantic division and will it matter in the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (3:55 PM)
I think Philadelphia will end up winning this division. Rangers struggles with consistency. I think will drop them a few and Philadelphia continue to impress me. If they can upgrade at any position, I think they will look at goaltending as they look pretty solid everywhere else.
Adam (Lake George, NY)
Did you see the hit Drew Stafford put on Keith of the Blackhawks last night? Staf started slow, but every game, he does something to show why he has chosen in the first round.
Matthew Barnaby (3:56 PM)
Drew Stafford like a lot of young players stuggles with consistency. Plays like last night will help him with his confidence and put him in Lindy Ruff's good books. He has shown that he can score at this level, but you can't disappear for long periods of time. He will be a good NHLer.
Matthew, I am curious to read your opinion on this. What are your thoughts on a couple guys going out to the face-off circle, nodding to each other, and then dropping the gloves when the puck drops? As much as I enjoy a good scrap, to me the most effective moments are after someone takes a run at another, etc., and not as much when two guys just agree to go. Thoughts?
Matthew Barnaby (3:58 PM)
I have been in that situation before and if it's genuine and you're trying to turn the game around in your favor then I have no problem with it. With me too, my favorite scraps are the emotional ones when someone gets hit, turns around and there is general anger towards the other guy.
The Vet (Pinball, MI)
Where will Kovalchuk be after the trade deadline?
Matthew Barnaby (4:00 PM)
He will still be an Atlanta Thrasher. If they trade him now, there will be absolutely no one in the buildling by the end of the year. He is a super star and an exciting player to watch. If he is not signed to a long term deal by next trade deadline, the answer will be totally different. Pick up and move the franchise, because he'll be gone.
Matthew Barnaby (4:00 PM)
I tried to get to as many questions as I could. I saw that Tom Brady and Tony Romo didn't have any questions for me this week, but I enjoyed all of yours. Enjoy the hockey as there is some great games this week and I look forward to talking to you next week.
