We've got Darrius!
Paul (Connecticut)
Since you're an underclassman, you can't participate in the all-star games. So are you gearing up for the combine now?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:04 PM)
Yeah, just focusing on the combine. Working hard for a good month so I can showcase my skills at the combine. Not being able to play in the senior games is tough, but I have three years of film.
Dan (Detroit)
What's your favorite Maryland memory?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:05 PM)
My favorite memory is definitely the Miami game. I scored two touchdowns and we won 14-13. And the fans back at College Park were the best!
John (CT)
Maryland was kind of up and down this year. Some really good wins and then a couple of not so good losses. What was the lockerroom like while dealing with the ups and downs?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:06 PM)
The key was just not to let the team be separated. We did a great job this year of being one. We tried to stay together and being positive. We tried to prove everyone wrong the following week.
Chris (Baltimore)
Where in the draft do you think you will end up?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:06 PM)
Right now, that's tough to say. I'm just working hard to make sure I can go as high as I can. I have no control over the NFL's team's need so I'm just trying to work as hard as I can.
Matt (Dover DE)
How did you like playing in the Maryland program, and are you looking forward to the rookie combine?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:07 PM)
Playing in the Maryland program was great. I learned a lot from the coaching staff and I have a lot of lifetime friends. Preparing for the combine is something that's important to me. Being prepared to showcase my skills. It's something I'm looking forward to.
Steiny (NYC)
Do you consider you self the best junior in the draft?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:08 PM)
I'm confident in my skills. I would say that I think I have the most to offer. I think I bring a lot to the table for any team. I'm very confident in myself, but I wouldn't flat out say that I'm the best junior in the draft.
Craig (Toronto)
Cardinals-Eagles?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:08 PM)
Cardinals.
Evan (Phoenix)
Steelers-Ravens?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:09 PM)
Ravens baby. I have to stay with the Maryland team.
Joe, Minneapolis
So how weird is it to see your entire career to date boiled down to a single number on a draft board?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:10 PM)
It's just crazy. All the work you do for all the years you're in college all boils down to draft day. It's crazy how what you do on and off the field can affect that. It's a crazy feeling, but I think everything will work out.
Henry (Buffalo)
Hey Darrius...fellow Terp here. Did you live on or off campus? And how did you enjoy your time in College Park?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:11 PM)
The football players live on campus at Maryland. I enjoyed my time a lot. I had a lot of friends from high school go to Maryland that played on the soccer team. I had a chance to spread the love around campus.
Jon(College Park, Md)
What's up Darrius, Sophomore Terp here. What do you feel is your biggest asset to a team heading into the draft?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:11 PM)
My speed. Having a chance to stretch the field and go deep to open up the underneath routes. I definitely think that my speed is something that can really help any NFL team.
Terry (Phoenix)
If you're coming out early, do you plan on finishing your degree?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:12 PM)
Yes. The plan is to finish my degree. My mom and myself are really big on finishing my degree. That will happen. I will have a diploma.
Chris (Baltimore)
Do you follow the other terp teams? What do you think of the Baseketball team and how they are doing?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:13 PM)
I follow them. I watch them sometimes. I watched them against Georgia Tech. I follow the other teams. Our soccer team won the national championship. The field hockey team won a national championship. Our teams are doing good, so I have to keep up.
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
Is there any NFL WR you fell you play like?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:13 PM)
There's no NFL player that I think I play like, but my favorite NFL player right now is TO. I'm a big TO fan.
Steiny (NYC)
Was there any second-guessing in your decision to enter the draft?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:15 PM)
The decision to leave was very tough. I did a lot of praying on it, talking to my mom. Talking to my coaches. But once I made my decision, I had to be confident on it. If you second guess a decision like this you're probably not doing the right thing.
Jmerms (NYC)
Darrius, when you were in high school you played LB. What made you want to become a WR?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:15 PM)
I played OLB and DE in high school. On third down to rush the edge. I never had a sack. WR was something that was more natural. I was a taller kid. WR was something the coaches stuck me at and it worked out for me.
Chris (Baltimore)
What CB in the NFL would you want to go up against and have the satisfaction of beating?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:16 PM)
I don't want to start having enemies already. But I think Asante Samuel is one of the best in the game. To go up against a guy like that and be successful means you're a pretty good wideout. To go up against him and battle would be a good matchup.
Jake (Baltimore, MD)
What are you hoping to run in the 40?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:17 PM)
I can't give out that information right now, but I'm definitely going to focus in and stay relaxed and run as fast as I can. You have to put on a show while you're there. If I can wow people that will be a good time.
Chris (Baltimore)
What went into your decision?
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:18 PM)
I thought about the pros and cons. I thought about next year, what could happen. Injury could happen. We could have a great season, win the ACC. There were so many different factors. But going to the next level was the best thing for me and my family. Getting hurt at the end of the season wasn't a big factor, but it went into it.
Darrius Heyward-Bey (2:19 PM)
Tell the fans back at Maryland, I appreciate all that you've done for me. Keep looking up on me, I'll try to do big things for you.
