Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Buzzmaster (1:02 PM)
We've got Kidder!
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
We've got a break while gearing up for the Super Bowl. We've got coaching news. Anything you want to talk about. Let's get rolling with your NFL questions.
Pete (NC)
Keith, who scores more points, Pitt's O or D?
Keith Kidd (1:04 PM)
Tough question. We'll talk about the Super Bowl next week, for the whole hour, as we get ready. So, I'm going to think about that one. But for today, I'm going to say Pittsburgh's O.
Brian ((CT))
Hey Keith, what do you think of the Rex Ryan hire by the Jets?
Keith Kidd (1:06 PM)
Long, LONG overdue. He's exactly what this team and organization needs. Jets fans, get ready for a fast and aggressive attacking D in the Big Apple.
Alex (Kansas City)
Keith, what are your thoughts on Pioli's silence in Kansas City? What do you imagine Pioli has spent his days doing since he took the GM job in KC? Thanks!
Keith Kidd (1:07 PM)
Get used to it. Obviously Scott has a plan and it's going to be a process that takes some time. He's debating whether or not to make a move at the head coaching position before he moves forward.
Keith Kidd (1:07 PM)
Something in regards to Herm's future should be done in the next couple of days, I would think.
Shane (Phx, AZ)
KK: Is Herm Edwards staying in KC? Ive heard the rumors about Todd Haley going there, but truthfully, Ive never got the impression that Pioli was the type of guy to drag someone along. He does play things close to the vest, but by all indications, he doesnt seem like the type of guy who would keem Edwards around while all the head coaching vacancies are being filled.
Keith Kidd (1:08 PM)
50-50 at best. Obviously, the more it delays, the more you think there will be a change at the head coaching position.
Steiny (NYC)
Will the Cowboys trade Terrell Owens?
Keith Kidd (1:09 PM)
Yeah, I think any player on any roster is tradeable. Only a few players are untouchable. I think he's a guy that they could possibly shop. I don't know how many teams would be willing to give up high compensation for a guy that still has a lot of talent, but is not that good in the lockerroom.
Dan (Buffalo, NY)
Kidder, do you find it kind of ironic that the Glazers wait so long to fire Gruden and the only job left is Oakland?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
Absolutely. I was in total shock when they made the move on Gruden. However, based on the reports coming out of there, I don't think this organiztion could have moved forward with him at the top. I'm anxious to see what this team does with Morris at the top.
David (Maimi)
Sophmore slump for the Ryan and the Falcons next year?
Keith Kidd (1:11 PM)
I personally hope not. But that's kind of what Atlanta has done -- they have a great year and then slip off. But in the NFL anything is possible. However, I don't see him slumping off, based on his overall makeup. I see him getting better in years to come. The Falcons still have to be aggressive in adding talent to the defensive side of the field.
Ryan (San Diego)
Sounds like LT may be done in SD. Do they get a rb in the first round to compliment Sproles or wait?
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
I don't know if he's done in San Diego, but obviously there are issues with management and the player. I don't think how you handle this is by posting messages on your website. The teams that do the best business are the ones that you don't read about it in the paper until it happens.
Mike (MA)
Gut feeling: Where do you see Matt Cassell going next year? He needs to be out of New England so all the clowns up here calling sports readio will stop talking about trading Brady
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
I think he goes to the team that offers the most compensation. However, the Patriots aren't just going to give him away, especially with Brady coming off a major knee injury. It's amazing in our business how quickly you can go from the penthouse to the outhouse. Trading Tom Brady? Are you kidding me?
Mike (San Diego) & Eating Some Tasty Crow
Kidder, please post this for the Cardinal fans out there. I was the one that was saying the NFC championship game would be over at halftime and the Iggles would crush the Cards...well, it was almost over at halftime! Good luck in the Super Bowl. Humble Iggles Fan
Anthony (NYC)
Kidder does anyone want to be the Raiders Head Coach? Each time theres a candidate they end up going elsewhere, the one guy who wants it Davis doesn't want to give it to him. What if anything can be done with Al Davis?
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
I don't know how to answer this in regards to Mr. Davis, because it all starts and ends with him. When the smoke clears, I think Tom Cable will be the head coach, at least for the 2009 season.
Adam (Jersey)
Now that Gruden is gone, do you think Garcia stays in Tampa? Will they use a high pick on a QB of the future or do you think Josh Johnson can truly be that guy?
Keith Kidd (1:16 PM)
I do not think Garcia will be in Tampa. I think that the Bucs need to somehow find their QB of the future. But that's easier said then done, especially with them picking at 19. I think that's what cost Gruden his job is that he's not developed a future franchise QB. That's one of the many things.
Will J (Portland, OR)
Keith, what do you suppose Tennessee and Arizona will do with Leinart and Young? They can't sit on the bench forever, but it looks as though they may next year also.
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
Starting this offseason and into training camp will be very critical for both of these players. At some point, they need to get on the field in the 09 season. It will be interesting to see how both Arizona and Tennessee do in re-signing Warner and Collins.
Pete (NC)
There's a lot of speculation around Charlotte about what to do with Peppers. He doesn't want to be here, so why would we keep him? I say trade him for a first round pick plus more picks/players and be done with it.
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
It's real easy. If you can't get a deal done, you franchise the player. The interesting thing in Carolina is that they have a whole new defensive staff. I don't think getting a new staff will change whether or not you keep Peppers or will make him happy, you do the best thing for the franchise. The best thing is to franchise Julius Peppers.
David (Houston, TX)
What is the Texans biggest need right now...impact safetly or a DE to compliment Mario Williams
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
That's a good question. They've got to address the secondary. That's their biggest need. They've got three players who are up, so their secondary is their biggest need defensively. This defensive line is pretty talented. With the addition of Bill Kollar, they're going to be playing lights out.
Bobby ((KY))
Will Mike Shanahan eventually find himself in Dallas?
Keith Kidd (1:21 PM)
Stay tuned. The one thing about this offseason has told us is that NFL teams aren't afraid to fire coaches with time and millions of dollars left on their contract. But you just never know.
Brian ((CT))
Is Ryan gonna play the 4-3defense , if so I love the guy already
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
He's going to base his things out of the 3-4, but he runs a multiple defense that utilizes both 4 and 3 man fronts. There are a lot of players in place in New York that can excell in this system.
David Fairborn, OH
Give me, a Bengals fan, some hope for 2009.
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
How about a healthy Carson Palmer?
Ryan (America's Finest City)
How many seasons does it take to completely overhaul and change the entire scheme of a defense like in Denver?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
Great question. If you look at the Dolphins situation, they added 29 new players and they went from 1-15 to an AFC East division championship. It can be done. Teams are built on the defensive and offensive lines.
Steiny (NYC)
What is Keith Bulluck's future in Tennessee?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
Very bright.
Joey (NJ)
Is Ryan going to fully unleash the monster that is Gholston on opposing Offenses (and hopefully a guy named tom brady)
Keith Kidd (1:25 PM)
Absolutely. All you have to do is go back to Terrell Suggs' rookie year and see the body of work that Rex Ryan did with him that made him the great player that he is today.
Ryan (Madison, WI)
"Teams are built on the defensive and offensive lines." That means the Lions should draft Andre Smith at #1, right?
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
It makes a lot of sense. Teams are built from the inside out. However, the Lions have so many needs and two No. 1 picks and they need to hit big time on both players to get this franchise headed in the right direction.
Brian (CT)
Does Rex Ryan make Kerry Rhodes the next Ed Reed?
Keith Kidd (1:28 PM)
I don't know if you can make the next Ed Reed, because he's playing in a zone that I've never seen at the free safety position. However, Kerry Rhodes will excell in this new system, especially when the ball is in the air.
Sheila: (Daly City, CA)
If the 49ers knew that Shanahan, Gruden and others would be available to them then would they still have been so quick to promote Singletary to the position of head coach?
Keith Kidd (1:29 PM)
You can't look back, you have to move forward. They made the decision based on the job Singletary did this season. The biggest issue in San Francisco is around the QB position. Singletary's fate moving forward will be based on that.
Bruce, Point Roberts, WA
How long will it take for Chad Ocho Cinco to make some offseason grumblings? I mean he does have to put up with a lame duck coach and an oft injured qb ... also will TJ head to Indy and replace Marvin Harrison?
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
Based on the way Chad played this season, he needs to be very quiet this offseason. I don't know how much value he has on the market. You have to be able to control your lockerroom. That's becoming a big thing with NFL teams.
Seth (Peoria, AZ)
Is the Steelers defense better than the Cardinals offense?
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
This is going to be a great matchup. The way you attack the Steelers defense is to make explosive plays downfield, which the Cardinals can do. It will be interesting to see how the Steelers secondary defends Larry Fitzgerald, while also worrying about Boldin. The Cardinals line will have to play at an unbelievable level against the Steelers pressure schemes.
Bob (Bean Town)
Owens is more than "not that good in the locker room" he is a cancer. He has never been arrested - yet he splits locker rooms more than the average NFL felon.
Jonathan (Corona, CA)
Will Cadillac Williams be health next year for Tampa Bay? He was just starting to look good when he went down again
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
He has suffered some major injuries over the last couple of years. I think that yes he will be healthy, but the conern is can he start and finish the season. Those are the things you have to be concerned about.
Steve (Syracuse)
What are you hearing on the Tennessee DCoordintor front?
Keith Kidd (1:34 PM)
Either Chuck Cecil or Dave McGinest.
Marie: (San Francisco)
What do you see the 49ers doing with Alex Smith? Do they bring him back to compete with Shaun Hill for the starting job? Or do they draft Matthew Stafford or Mark Sanchez if either one of them falls to them?
Keith Kidd (1:36 PM)
They pick 10th. I don't think either QB will be there. However, reports out of SF are they are trying to restructure Alex Smith's contract. That said, they still have to make a decision on the OC. And in fairness to Alex Smith, he's played with a new OC every year he's been in the league. I like the way Shaun Hill played for them late in the year.
Luis (SB, CA)
Keith, where do the Cowboys go from here? There will be NO change in offensive mindset, ala retention of both Owens and Garret. The defense was stout of late and should do more of the same. They don't have money for free agency because Ware is going to be the highest paid defender ever. There won't be a big signing. If you ask me, all the pieces are in place, it's "show me" time...
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
The Cowboys are a very disfunctional organization right now and needs to be cleaned up.
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
This team is way too talented to not get into the playoffs this past season.
Mike (Cleveland)
Do you think that the Browns should address the ILB or OLB position with the 5th pick?
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
The Browns should take the best defensive player with the 5th pick overall. Unless, they have an offensive player that is still on the board and much more highly rated.
Jake, Baltimore MD
Ravens, Giants or Skins? Which team has the best chance to get to the playoffs with their current roster?
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
Giants.
Mitch (MN)
With the Vikings in obvious need of a QB to atleast compete with T-jack for the starting job, do you think the vikings will go after a free agent or look for something in the draft?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
Again, this offseason, the Vikings will explore all options. I think they need to explore a veteran. They went with the young guy last year in Jackson. Keep in mind, they also have John David Booty on the roster.
Tony Romo (Irving, TX)
Kidder, I think you need to be more of a leader
David Fairborn, OH
Ray Lewis...in or out of B-more next fall?
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
I'm going with in. I don't know how you can let him leave your organization right now.
Christopher, Iron Mountain, MI
Where would you rank Calvin Johnson amongst NFL receivers? I thinks he must be in the top 10 at least, given the QB's who have been throwing at him! Who would you go for at picks 1 and 20?
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
I would say top 10. I thought he was simply amazing this year with the way he played in that offense. That was a not very productive QB in that offense.
Dave (Denver)
What do you think of the Broncos hiring of McDaniels and his coaching hirings since?
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
I love the move. I thought it was very aggressive for them to get one of the rising stars in the NFL. I can't wait to see this Denver offense under Jay Cutler in this system in the fall. But the Broncos need to address the defensive side, which they will.
Matty Ice (Kiddernation, USA)
We really need to pound on Warner early and often. The eagles were most successful when the hit him. Labeau is the master of roughing up a Qb. How do you see it Kidder?
Keith Kidd (1:44 PM)
One of the things that plays to Warner's advantage is his quick release. I expect to see him in the gun early, to allow him to react quickly against these pressure schemes. But the Cardinals have to stay with the running game, no matter if they can run it or not. They have to get the Steelers thinking about the run, so they can't just pin their ears back and rush the QB.
Ryan (Allentown)
what do you think the Eagles will do with thier two first round pick, i know they need tackles?
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
I think they'll address their OT situation. This team is in great shape from the standpoint of guys under contract. They'll address the OT situation and I hope they'll address and finally get a No. 1 WR.
Chad (Sebring, Ohio)
What did you think of Anquon Boldins little scuffle on the sidelines with his coach last weekend, and what was it all about?
Keith Kidd (1:46 PM)
Completely overblown. It happens every Sunday in the NFL.
Anthony (NYC)
Kidder in regards to the Eagles how is it every off season they have the same issuse, the need for a #1 WR? Other than the one season T.O. was around McNabb has been in need of a go to guy.
Keith Kidd (1:47 PM)
Anthony, because Andy Reid is convinced, in his mind, that he has the WRs in place to win in this league. This is a pure case of a coach falling in love with his players. And you know what, he's the one that's with them every day.
Pete, NYC
Giants WR issue, draft or free agency and if they go with free agency and offer draft picks who could they persuade to come there?
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
The No. 1 issue is whether or not Plaxico will be back in '09. After that, they can address the free agency period and try to go get a guy like Houshmanzadeh, Mark Clayton, Antonio Bryant. There are other options. The one thing they have to decide on Plaxico is that he has to buy into the team concept in New York.
David Fairborn, OH
What do you see the Cleveland Browns (the mistake by the lake) doing to improve their team this offseason?
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
There are a lot of areas they need to address. But it's going to be difficult because they don't have many draft picks. They're going to have to be aggressive in the free agent market, especially on the defensive side.
Chad (Sebring, Ohio)
O my word...the Giants definetly need to look at Crabtree or Robiskie...those are the top two in the draft, thats my opinion though
Billy, Hyannis, MA
How will the Pats fares after losing McDaniels and Pioli? Will they make the playoffs next year?
Keith Kidd (1:50 PM)
They still have Bill Belichick. If Tom Brady can get back to being healthy, this team is loaded offensively. I think they'll address the defense in the offseason, both the second and third levels, and they'll be right in the thick of being the team to beat in the AFC East. Once they get into the playoffs, anything's possible.
Greg (Philly)
Give a little perspecitive on the Mangini hire. Personally this makes no sense. The man was lousy with the Jets, qb indecision with pendington and clemens blows the entire 2006 season, doesn't make the playoffs with Favre in 2007 but pendington does in miami, no player development, etc. There is no hope in Cleveland.
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
I like the hire. I think he had two winning seasons after three years in New York. He has a plan and a program and I think you'll be impressed with him by the time he gets things rolling in Cleveland. Browns fans need to be patient, because there is some talent on this team.
Drew Carey
Cleveland rocks!
Adam (Jersey)
I don't know about the Pats, Billy. They've been awful ever since they lost Mangini and Crennel... sigh
Matty Ice (H Burg, PA)
In the ranks of All Time Safties, where does Troy Polamalu stand? I say top 5 Kidder.
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
All time? With their body of work, when it's all said and done, both Ed Reed and Troy will easily be in the top 1-4 safeties to ever play the game.
Chad (Sebring, Ohio)
I am a huge Browns guy, but I have honestly came to the realization that the Browns front office just dont know what it takes and who to go with ever!...its kinda sad to a point, you shouldnt own a team or be a gm, if you cant get anything done
Mike (SF)
Does Jeff Jagodzinski seem like a good fit for the Niners' OC job?
Keith Kidd (1:54 PM)
Obviously you have to be impressed with what he did with Matt Ryan at BC. The one thing about Mike Singletary is you better come in there with a plan on how to run the ball effectively.
Mike (MA)
Polamalu is a one man wrecking crew. Best defensive player in the NFL.
Tim (NJ)
Did someone really refer to Gholston as a monster earlier? The guy is more teddy bear than monster. He got absolutely no production at a position where most rookies at least contribute -- Ware, Merriman, Wimbley, Lawson, and Woodley. Typical Buckeye bust.
Chad (Sebring, Ohio)
If you were GM of a team that needed major help in the back field....who would you chose this year in the draft...Chris Wells, KNowshawn Morino, Maurice Wells?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
Great question. I'll take Beanie Wells.
Matty Ice
To the whole Kiddernation(The best chat on ESPN) rest up this weekend and get ready for the Super Bowl and a Steelers victory.
Ted (CA)
Polamalu isn't even the best safety, much less the best overall defensive player.
petrack
I recently heard Peppers wants to go to a 'great' 3-4 team? could that be the Steelers? They supposedly are $20 mil under the cap!
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
Pipedream. I'd be shocked if he's not in Carolina next season.
Mike (MA)
Ted....Really? Who is a better safety? Palomalu beat Baltimore almost by himself
Mark (Indy)
Do you think that the Colts will hire a defensive coordinator that will start to change-up their tampa 2 personnel? I was happy with what Dungy did with the defense considering the resources put into the offense, but I wouldn't mind seeing some LB that didn't play safety in college.
Keith Kidd (1:58 PM)
They hired Larry Coyer from the Bucs. Formerly DC in Denver. I would say that maybe it won't be a true Tampa 2, but they'll have a lot of principles in the Tampa 2 system.
T (Long Island)
Did that guy really just include maurice wells with beanie and knowshon?
Aaron (KC)
Vikes offseason thoughts?
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
They definitely have to address the QB position. I'd love to see them get another WR. They need more speed at LB. I'd like to see them address a CB. And get a very good special teams coach to help out a unit that didn't play very well last year.
Keith Kidd (2:00 PM)
Unfortunately, it's going to be a depressing weekend without any NFL football. But we do have the Senior Bowl on Saturday. We'll be back here same time next week. We'll get more in depth on Super Bowl XLIII.
