Paul Kuharsky (2:59 PM)
Hello all. Thanks for coming. I'll dive right in...
Chief (Nashville, TN)
Does The Boss sing "Jack and Diane"? What do you think of Ray Ray coming to the Titans or Indy?
Paul Kuharsky (2:59 PM)
He does not, as you well know, but McClain's Boss apparently does. No chance for either destination...
Larry (Irvine, CA)
Don't you think the Lions would be better off not drafting a QB? Putting a rookie QB on to a team with role players who aren't very good is a no-win situation. They are better off finding a veteran QB to sign and just drafting as many excellent role players as possible. Do you think they should pass on the top QB's in the draft?
Paul Kuharsky (3:00 PM)
At this early stage, I'd say a stud lineman would be the better way to go. As is their luck, there is no consensus best player in this draft, at least not yet....
Heath (Owensboro, KY)
Any chance Simms overtakes Young as No. 2 qb this offseason assuming KC is re-signed?
Paul Kuharsky (3:02 PM)
Probably not. I would think, no matter how much he likes the team, Simms could get somewhere to be a No. 2 and have a better chance to play than he'll get if everyone is back with the Titans...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
Any chance the Titans use a second round pick on a receiver? Say a good route runner/sure handed guy like Robiskie?
Paul Kuharsky (3:02 PM)
We can hope. I would hope if they feel they have no major need after free agency that receiver is the default major need...
JB (TX)
If not Big Al then where does that $30 mil in cap room for the Titans get allocated? So many key pieces (Finnegan, Roos, Stewart, etc.) already signed to cap-friendly extensions...
Paul Kuharsky (3:04 PM)
May not need to use it all, so some of it goes into Bud's pockets maybe. Leaves you some freedom to lock up more key cogs during the season...
Jayson Nashville TN
Odds that Lendale is not back with Titans next year? Draft day trade, perhaps?
Paul Kuharsky (3:05 PM)
Zero. He's on the team. I am amazed at how people imagine players they don't like will be traded when a trade is so rare, and when it's clear they like him in a way a lot of people don't...
Charles from Nashville, TN
Surely there will no way that Lendale and Chris J. can both stay healthy all season, so what do you belive the Titans will do to secure a decent 3rd RB? Would it be a mid-round draft pick, Chris (Ray Charles, Jr.)Henry, Quinton Ganther or Raphael Little?
Paul Kuharsky (3:05 PM)
I think it will be Little, who will beat out Chris Henry in camp...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
I hear Dallas may be looking into Ray Lewis, how is it possible that they even have space in that linebacking corps unless Zach Thomas isn't coming back?
Paul Kuharsky (3:05 PM)
Zach Thomas isn't coming back...
Steiny (NYC)
What are your thoughts on Texans to increase ticket prices 3.7 percent in '09?
Paul Kuharsky (3:06 PM)
I don't have a huge problem with it. But then I am not a ticket buyer....
Steiny (NYC)
The Texans hired Kollar to coach the defensive line. In your opinion was that a smart move?
Paul Kuharsky (3:07 PM)
I don't know him, but from what I hear he's a good guy and a fiery coach. I'm glad they didn't hire a D-line coach with a Denver connection. See today's column post on that topic. Now they need to give Kollar better players....
Todd (LaVergne,TN)
It took me a long while to get over the 2000 lose to the Ravens and then comes the Jan. 2009 lose to the Ravens. As a faithful Titans fan they let me down big time. Fishers playoff teams are becoming choke artists. Fishers playoff record is now south of .500 He is a great coach but if he can not get over the playoff hump but only once (and it took a "miracle")and make it to the big dance I ask is Jeff Fisher over rated? He seesms a swell regular season coach and a poor post season coach.
Paul Kuharsky (3:08 PM)
I think they have now officially underachieved in the post season under Fisher. But please list for me all the current coaches with big-time postseason records...
jimmy(kinston nc)
hey paul,is all the movement on the defensive side of the ball in carolina related to peppers announcing he wanted out?
Paul Kuharsky (3:10 PM)
At least some of it is related to Trgovic being tight with Del Rio, I think...
JB (TX)
So most are assuming either Young or Collins at QB for the Titans. Any chance they go in a different direction, give up some picks and make a huge splash? Matt Cassel? Donovan McNabb??
Paul Kuharsky (3:11 PM)
No. Well, if they can't retain Collins, maybe they go outside for someone. Won't be as high-profile or expensive as those guys, though. Cassel will cost a fortune and McNabb isn't going anywhere...
Riley Grant (Denver)
If the Broncos have a choice, who do they pursue, Julius Peppers, or Albert H?
Paul Kuharsky (3:11 PM)
I think Albert. More impact overall on run and pass....
Jesse in Nashville
PK - did the Titans whiff by not grabbing Gregg Williams when they had the chance?
Paul Kuharsky (3:12 PM)
No. McGinnis or Cecil can be as good or better. I think Fisher told Williams to take it because he wasn't going to bring him back of Schwartz left...
Brad (FL)
Which direction do you see Jacksonville going in the 1st round? LT, CB, or WR?
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
Left tackle. Cornerback second. I hope they realize the risk of first-round receivers. They need a home run pick...
Chief (Nashville, TN)
Who are the Lions looking at for Tight End coach?
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
Not you!
Scott (houston)
The Texans haven't had a good safety since entering the league. Does Dom Barber have ability or do they need to make a trade.
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
I'd like to see them go that direction early in the draft...
Jess (New Mexico)
With Dom Capers bringing the 3-4 to The Pack, do you think there will be struggles for them to switch systems and do they have the propers players in place to do it?
Paul Kuharsky (3:14 PM)
Seems to me such a transition takes a couple years and I'd expect they'd still play some 4-3 as they get the right personnel in place...
Adam (Columbia, TN)
Why is Fisher taking so much flak b/c we got beat in the playoffs. So many people have short memories. Like how before the season - nobody picked us to win the division, nobody had us locked in the playoffs. Most everybody had Indy or Jax vying for the division. And we come out with 10-0 record and finish 13-4. Thats not bad in the NFL. Would a trip to the Big Dance be great...of course it would but as soon as fans realize that we cannot make it to the Super Bowl every year...the less they will be disappointed.
Paul Kuharsky (3:15 PM)
They think he fumbled twice, threw a pick got the star RB hurt and missed a FG...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
As much as I hate to see Schwartz go, I think he's the right guy to turn the Lions around. Think Schwartz will be trying to lure some of the Titans FA's away? (Scaife, Haynesworth in particular)
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
Not Albert. They break the bank I'm still not sure he goes there. And there is no special Schwartz-Haynesworth bond... Don't know about Scaife, but based on what Hartsock got last year and the weak group of FAs, I won't be surprised if Bo gets an offer that puts him out of the Titans pricing framework...
Matt (Philadelphia)
Would Bob Sanders be a better fit in a 3-4 scheme in more of a Polamalu role than in Cover 2?
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
I thikn he's an awfully good fit in what they do now, so long as he's healthy...
Tom Ato (The Vine)
Should the Lions trade their first pick for Derek Anderson?
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
You kidding? I'm not sure Anderson is worth a second rounder, I know he's not worth the No. 1 pick in the draft....
Kevin (Houston)
Is the AFC South as wide open as ever now? It seems to me the Colts have lost a ton in Dungy, I don't think we know if the Titans are really as good as advertised, and the Texans and Jags have the potential to break out. what are your thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (3:18 PM)
I don't see the Texans getting all the way to the top and I think it's going to take more than a year for the Jaguars to dig out, particularly if they are conservative in free agency as they've indicated they will be....
John (Buffalo, NY)
Paul, How much longer are we going to have to hear about the "Music City Miracle"?
Paul Kuharsky (3:19 PM)
To the grave, I imagine. if more guys followed special teams coach's instructions, it wouldn't be an issue...
K ( philly)
Jax take an LB? Or just best available on either side of the ball?
Paul Kuharsky (3:19 PM)
I think a left tackle is priority one...
Harv (Franklin, TN)
Do you have a HOF vote? If not, when do you get one?
Paul Kuharsky (3:21 PM)
I don't and don't expect I ever will. There is one rep per city, and it goes to someone local who's focus is on that city's team. My focus is now on four teams... David Climer is the Nashville voter...
Aaron (KC)
Herm goes to Indy as D-cord after Pioli cans him for Shannahan?
Paul Kuharsky (3:21 PM)
I think Pioli cans Herm, but not for Shanahan. Shanahan wants to be Pioli and the coach....
JB (TX)
Are you going to be in Tampa next week? Still can't believe the NFL picked Tampa over Houston for this one...
Paul Kuharsky (3:22 PM)
Tampa is a great Super Bowl city, you can't bemoan that. Houston will be in the rotation, seems to me... I won't be there...
Adam (Columbia, TN)
I know you have not got into draft mode yet, but where do you see the Titans going with the 1st pick. I know you dont think they will take a receiver. My opinion, unless Harvin or Maclin is available, I think they go with a CB like DJ Moore from Vandy or Vontea Davis from Illinois. Possibly a DT if Big Al leaves. I think they take one of the two WR mentioned above if they are available due to the fact that they are playmakers and FAST!!!!
Paul Kuharsky (3:24 PM)
They hope to be in position where they can take best available. Last time they were in a spot like this it got them Bulluck, right? But if they lose Albert, D-line will have to be addressed again early, I think...
Aaron (KC)
Ok so who? And where does Herm go I think Indy is perfect.
Paul Kuharsky (3:25 PM)
Why is Herm perfect? Let me run down his coordinating experience: Did you get all that?
Jeff (Nashville)
PK - What do you anticipate more? Sitting on Avon beach with your black socks, loafers, and floral print shorts or the start of a new NFL season?
Paul Kuharsky (3:26 PM)
Thanks for asking. No black socks, i promise. Just finished a long season and have a beach trip somewhere far warmer than Jersey coming up soon...
Bill (Jacksonville)
How much money and number of years would it take to get Albert Hanesworth to come to the Jags?
Paul Kuharsky (3:27 PM)
We're probably talking over $30 million guaranteed...
Matt Lownes (New York)
Jets good or bad next season?
Paul Kuharsky (3:28 PM)
Average...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
With Bironas likely gone through FA, do we draft/sign a non-drafted FA or go after someone on the mend who may not garner as much, say a Nugent.
Paul Kuharsky (3:28 PM)
If he's gone I could see a situation where they bring in three guys and have them slug it out...
Tyler (Murfreesboro, TN)
Is there anything more overrated than a Mock Draft? They are never right, hardly ever close past the first 2 picks, if that. I guess ya'll need something to do though after the Super Bowl. When can we expect the Kuharsky AFC South Mock?
Paul Kuharsky (3:29 PM)
Draft week, if at all, I hope. I think it's a largely silly exercise. But people eat them up...
Brad (Dallas)
Do the broncos have a chance at Albert? If not, who can be the run stopper they need?
Paul Kuharsky (3:31 PM)
If he makes it to free agency, I think they will swing hard. The DT list I am looking at doesn't have a lot of good names after his, making him that much more valuable...
Charles (Nashville)
What ever happened to Roydell Williams? Did he even get looked at by anyone?
Paul Kuharsky (3:32 PM)
Not so far as I know. Still has a grievance out there, I believe...
JB (TX)
Of the Titans 2nd tier FAs (Scaife, Fuller, B. Jones) what is the likelihood each stay or goes? Which ones should be priorities? I like all 3 bout doubt they all come back...
Paul Kuharsky (3:34 PM)
1) Scaife. Most likely one lost. If he goes, they have to get a replacement because Crumpler and Stevens are not the reliable targets he is... 2) Fuller. I think he's really valuable, but I don't know that any one comes chasing a 'situational' guy so I think they'll be able to keep him. But they have other guys who can play the nickel effectively, particularly if Eric King is back. 3) Jones. A third WR on the Titans is hardly irreplaceable...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
With the Cowboys apparently letting Tank go as well, could Al end up in Big D? Could he fit into the 3-4?
Paul Kuharsky (3:35 PM)
Wouldn't have the chance to shine in a 3-4 the way he has in a 4-3. Unless the money was way bigger, I don't see why he'd sign up for the switch....
Steve (Houston)
Mock draft follow-up. How do you suggest dudes fill their football fix in March and April? Baseball?
Paul Kuharsky (3:36 PM)
I suggest baseball. Also time outside...
Nick (Richmond, VA)
Stick with Jason Campbell?
Paul Kuharsky (3:36 PM)
I don't see it myself...
Brad (Dallas)
who in your opinion is the top free agent?
Paul Kuharsky (3:37 PM)
Nnamdi Asomugha and Albert Haynesworth...
JB (TX)
Yeah, but is Fuller really 'situational'? They live in the nickel. He is probably better than 75% of the starting safeties out there.
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
Situational in the eyes of outsiders in that he's not playing one of the four defensive back spots in base. Certainly the Titans know he's more than that...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
Assuming these most recent legal issues don't amount to anything, where does Pacman have the best shot at a home?
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
Oakland. With guys in trouble, always look to Oakland...
Brad (Dallas)
Jay Cutler, or Matt Ryan? (better future)
Paul Kuharsky (3:39 PM)
That's tough. I go slight edge to Ryan right now, but it's probably because most recent impression is better after Denver's collapse. I'd start a franchise with either one....
Brad (Dallas)
If Namdi, Or Albert get Franchised, Do you see anyone trading the picks it willl take to get them?
Paul Kuharsky (3:40 PM)
Albert cannot get franchised... Probably not, it's incredibly expensive...
Steiny (NYC)
Is Frank Bush going to be on the field or in the coaches box during games this year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:41 PM)
Good question. Don't know. Don't know if he knows...
Jim (Indy)
Who gets the Colts D-coordinator gig? What about Special teams coordinator?
Paul Kuharsky (3:42 PM)
They may be on the verge of hiring Larry Coyer as defensive coordinator... Have heard no names for special teams yet...
Jonathan (Corona, CA)
Will the bucs be big players in the free agent pool? In past years they have not made that big splash. Lots of nice moves but nothing that gets a wow from the fans
Paul Kuharsky (3:43 PM)
I don't think they're plans will be focused on getting a Wow from the fans. They are getting old at some key spots on D....
Brad (Dallas)
If you were Jerry Jones, Would you cut ties with T.O?
Paul Kuharsky (3:43 PM)
Yesterday, if not the day before...
Chief (Nashville. TN)
Do you think the Pro Bowl needs to just go away? Now that it is not in Hawaii why bother!!!
Paul Kuharsky (3:45 PM)
Yes, they should hold a gala, Chief. Just a gala. You could go if you weren't busy with your four hours a week coaching the Lions TEs or your special training sessions with Tebow... Everyone say hello to Frank Wycheck. Who was bemoaning the Music City Miracle? Here is your guy....
TJ (Columbus, OH)
If given the opportunity, would the Titans give whatever it took to get a guy like Boldin through a trade?
Paul Kuharsky (3:45 PM)
No. They are hard line on building through the draft and are largely unwilling to part with high picks...
JB (TX)
Another QB question: who has the better chance of bouncing back VY or Matt Leinart? Seem to be in a really similar spot, even if different paths got them there.
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
I haven't seen Leinart up close, obviously. Based on what I have seen from Young, it won't be Young...
Taylor (Tuscaloosa, Al)
If jeremy Maclin slips to number eight in the draft, do you think jacksonville will take him with the recent struggles at wide reciever?
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
I think they need to take lineman....
Terence Fails (Nashville)
Frank wants to be a TE coach? What, Titansradio /104.5 too hard a gig?
Matt (Buffalo, NY)
Should the Bills have kept Dick Jauron?
Paul Kuharsky (3:47 PM)
Don't know. Something to be said for continuity if he's pledged to fix some things...
Adam (Columbia, TN)
Can I have your job???
Paul Kuharsky (3:48 PM)
Sorry, currently filled...
PC (Arizona)
Do you think Lane Kiffin would have been a good NFL coach if given the chance?
Paul Kuharsky (3:49 PM)
He was given the chance, and in tough circumstances he was about average...
Adam (Columbia, TN)
Big Chief and Lil Chief - I heard John McClain on the zone yesterday afternoon saying the Cardinals will trade Boldin in the offseason due to his distractions of late and the emergence of S.Breaston...Either of you think it happens??? (I wish I could hear Frank respond in his McClain voice...its hilarious)
Paul Kuharsky (3:50 PM)
If somebody ponies up what he's worth, maybe. But it's bad to let disgruntled guys get what they want. Encourages the next one to make noise...
Matt (Buffalo, NY)
Do you think Trent Edwards is a good fit for the bills?
Paul Kuharsky (3:53 PM)
That first month or so he sure looked good., I saw him at Jacksonville and was very impressed. He's certainly deserving of at least one more big chance....
Harv (Franklin, TN)
Has the Boss ever played at the Ryman?
Paul Kuharsky (3:53 PM)
At least once, on the Ghost of Tom Joad tour. i lived in Caifornia at the time...
Adam (Columbia, TN)
Frankie this one is for you - Schwartz calls you up and says you want to be my TE coach...do you accept???
Paul Kuharsky (3:54 PM)
Schwartz is way too smart for that. His coaches will be in early and stay late...
Steiny (NYC)
How much did Michael Roos impress you this season?
Paul Kuharsky (3:54 PM)
He was good and it's nice to see the rest of the league and country recognizing it...
Josh (Houston)
Do you think the Colts' first pick will be a WR to replace Marvin, a DT to replace the empty space that's there now, or something more important that I'm not mentioning? (Considering that I think Addai/Rhodes/Hart can be plenty at RB when healthy).
Paul Kuharsky (3:56 PM)
Depends on how their defensive philosophy changes. If they stay the same, then i think the sort of DT they need doesn't have to be an especially high pick. I could see WR if the right guy is there. I think they should consider replacing Ugoh as well. I think if they keep Rhodes and get Hart back, they will think they are OK behind Addai. And I suspect they believe his issues were injury and line related...
Lori (Nashville, TN)
Are the Titans in the market for a veteran TE? If so, who is available?
Paul Kuharsky (3:57 PM)
Depends on what happens with Scaife, who benefits because FA list is thin. If he's lost I'd expect them to draft one...
Steiny (NYC)
What are your thoughts on Kerry Collins getting a late Pro Bowl invite?
Paul Kuharsky (3:59 PM)
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcsouth/0-7-440/Collins-in-Pro-Bowl-shows-system-needs-overhaul.html
Richard (Knoxville)
Paul, do you think the Titans bring back Kearse? His contract is attractive, but it looks like Jacob Ford is the better player now.
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
Two year deal, right? No reason not to have him back at current price. There is room for Ford too....
Ryan (Minnesota)
Who do you see as the vikings starting quarterback next season?
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
For their sake I hope it's someone not on the roster right now...
Albert Haynesworth (Nashville, TN)
What are the chances that I go somewhere else for fat cash and revert back to old Albert... fat, slow, taking games off, playing "hurt" when I'm out of breath?
Paul Kuharsky (4:01 PM)
Well he's going to be helped off the field a few times a game no matter what... Maybe I am a fool, but I buy that Albert has changed. After the Gurode incident, it meant a lot to him to rebuild his name. If he gets money and dogs it, he tarnishes the name again...
Matt Lownes (New York)
Do the Jets have a chance without Brett Favre next season?
Paul Kuharsky (4:02 PM)
Probably better chance without him and forcing action at QB than with him and pretending the almighty is taking snaps...
Brian (CT)
Super Bowl Prediction
Paul Kuharsky (4:02 PM)
I think it'll be Cardinals and Steelers... Undecided on winner this far ahead of time...
Harv (Franklin, TN)
Will Cashman get canned after another third place finish in the AL East?
Paul Kuharsky (4:03 PM)
Not something they're going to have to worry about...
Terence (Nashville)
So just who IS pushing for the Pro Bowl to be played v. having a skills contest / meet & greet / banquet "All-Star" Weekend kicking off Super Week?
Paul Kuharsky (4:04 PM)
The league is still holding the game and came up with the plan to move it to the Super Bowl city the week before the Super Bowl. So I'd say the league is pushing for it to be played. I'm pushing the gala...
Mike J Nashville
Would you call VY a bust yet?
Paul Kuharsky (4:05 PM)
Soon. Bill Polian once told me that if you don't see it in a QB in the third year, it's time to start looking for the next one. In what we saw of Young this season, I didn't see it. You?
Chief (Nashville, TN)
I would do great in a skills contest!!!
Paul Kuharsky (4:05 PM)
You'd win the weigh-in for sure...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
Please tell me Houshmanzadeh isn't an actual possibility for Tennessee. I admit he has game, but I don't like the prospect of him trailing off in talent in the next 2 years.
Paul Kuharsky (4:06 PM)
The Titans won't be in the financial ballpark it would take to get him. I think they have to spend their money on someone, and after Albert I'd love to see them chase Housh...
Dave
Are the players really going to care about the Pro Bowl? Not that they care now, but going to Hawaii in February is a hell of a lot better than going to say Indianapolis in February.
Paul Kuharsky (4:08 PM)
Great point. The Indy year, every player in the league will be a Pro Bowler. They will have undrafted rookies taking a pass... "The Pro Bowl featuring street free agents sponsored by Bridgestone with a special appearance by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band..."
Harv (Franklin, TN)
Better career - Kosar or McNair?
Paul Kuharsky (4:09 PM)
Let's take that one to the mailbag, shall we?
Paul Kuharsky (4:10 PM)
Folks, I can't thank you enough for coming by today and through the season... Stay tuned to the AFC South blog for updates on when we will reconvene during Sup[er Bowl week and plans for the offseason...
TJ (Columbus, OH)
Am I the only one who sees the issue of the Pro Bowl being a week before the Big Game? Usually the Super Bowl has some of the higher vote receivers in it, and those players aren't going to want/be allowed to play for fear of jeopardizing a championship?
Paul Kuharsky (4:11 PM)
Plus guys banged up on the Champiship Game losing teams will bail. It's a bad idea all around....
Todd (LaVergne,TN)
Has Fisher setup any interviews for the D coordinator position?
Paul Kuharsky (4:11 PM)
Don't know if he's walked down the halls yet to talk to Cecil and McGinnis. The interviews of concern are for the position replacement for which ever guy is promoted...
Andrew (nashville)
What does moving the pro bowl up do to the Senior Bowl?
Paul Kuharsky (4:13 PM)
Nothing. Senior Bowl is a Saturday and coaches and scouts who go to the practices have no concern with the Pro Bowl...
Richard (Knoxville)
After the "repeat" Ravens performance I am a little worried the Titans will rest on the fact they were close and not make neccessary changes. They could start to look old really fast with the likes of Kearse, Crumpler, Collins, and even Mawae. Mawae is a great locker room guy but has been on the sidelines the past two seasons for the playoff games.
Paul Kuharsky (4:14 PM)
They have Ford and Hayes ready behind Kearse, they have Harris ready behind Mawae. They know what they are and what they need...
Paul Kuharsky (4:14 PM)
OK folks, cheers and thanks again...
