Matthew Barnaby (3:30 PM)
Nice to be back. It's been a few weeks. Good news is, we don't have to watch the All-Star breakaway competition today.
AJ, Boston, MA
What are your thoughts on the Sabres this season? Do they have a legitimate shot at both making the playoffs and possibly upsetting a top seed?
Matthew Barnaby (3:32 PM)
I picked them at the start of the year to grab the 8 spot, and I'll stick with that pick. Like most teams, they go as Ryan Miller goes. Inconsistency has plagued them, winning 10-2 in Edmonton one night and making way too many defensive errors the next night in Calgary to lose. I don't see them upsetting a top seed if they get in.
Hey Matthew. Whats going on with Henrik Lundqvist? He let up 6 goals last night.
Matthew Barnaby (3:33 PM)
The Rangers didn't give him much support early. He then let in some uncharacteristic goals through the five-hole. He has played a lot and didn't get much of a break with the All-Star game. He has been terrific all year and the Rangers would be nowhere without him.
Dom from NY
The Rangers have now been inept at the power play for a year and a half. Isn't that an indictment of Tom Renney and his coaching staff? They seem to have enough capable offensive players on their roster although they don't have an superstars. Your thoughts?
Matthew Barnaby (3:35 PM)
I think it's a combination of both. They lost Brendan Shanahan and had a chance to sign him, but chose not to. They have a lot of perimeter players playing the power play, and Mike Rosival and Wade Redden are not doing the job quarterbacking.
Bobby Ryan just tied the rookie record for goals in a month, is there any way he can snag the Calder from Mason?
Matthew Barnaby (3:35 PM)
If he keeps up this pace, he certainly could. Mason is the front-runner, but there is a lot of hockey to be played. With Selanne back in the lineup, hopefully it won't slow Ryan down.
Matthew, would you consider Tim Thomas one of the most underrated players in the NHL?
Matthew Barnaby (3:36 PM)
If you asked me two months ago, I would have said yes, but he is turning so many heads and that seems the only thing anyone wants to talk about anymore. He is a battler and I would say a frontrunner to be the goalie for the U.S. team at the 2010 Olympics.
when brodeur is ready to play what will happen with clemmenson?
Matthew Barnaby (3:37 PM)
When Martin Brodeur returns, he will be the man. He will get most of the starts, like usual, and unless he says otherwise, it will continue to be like this. He's a Hall of Famer, and has won three Stanley Cups. Who would you want in there?
A month from now the Ducks will be? Competing for a playoff spot or begining a rebuild process... Which do you think?
Matthew Barnaby (3:38 PM)
I think the Ducks will be competing for the last couple playoff spots. They have too many top-end players not to be. They have struggled with consistency, but when you look at the lineup, they could beat anyone on any given night.
Any movement on changes to the fight game at the upper eschelons, now that 2009 has already seen one death and one convulsions attack due to fights at the minor league level?
Matthew Barnaby (3:40 PM)
In the junior leagues, they have instituted a rule that you cannot take off your helmet, but as for the NHL, I don't see anything changing in the near future. I think the first order of business is to making sure chinstraps are tightened and the way fights start will be second.
Zetterberg signed for a discount. Any chance the Wings keep both Franzen and Hossa now?
Matthew Barnaby (3:42 PM)
I have no idea how they're going to do it, but they seem to always find a way. Players are willing to give a discount to them, because they compete for the Stanley Cup every year. They both are going to command top dollar, but neither can make more than they gave Zetterberg, which is less than Hossa just signed.
Matthew, do you think that the San Jose Sharks will lose again in the playoffs or make the Stanley Cup Finals?
Matthew Barnaby (3:43 PM)
I picked Detroit from the start, and I'll stand by that pick, but if there is a team that can beat them, it is San Jose. I see these guys meeting in the Western Conference final, and flip a coin. San Jose will not falter early, which they have done in the past.

Can I get the portion of my season ticket money back that still goes toward your buyout?
Matthew Barnaby (3:44 PM)
I don't know if you've been watching the market, but that buyout money is all gone. Glad to see the Hawks are doing so well. Fans in Chicago deserve it.
Matty! Which strong young team do you think will be more dominant for the next say, 5 years? Hawks, Caps, Pens or B's?
Matthew Barnaby (3:46 PM)
Great question. If they can keep it together with cap issues, I really like the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Green are all great players with great enthusiasm. They are big, and they can all skate. We are very fortunate that there are so many good young teams out there.
Tim Bladensburg MD
Matt, Do the capitals make a serious run at the cup this year?
Matthew Barnaby (3:47 PM)
I think once you get past the Bruins, the East is wide open. I think the Capitals are as good a pick as there is out there. Goaltending is the issue. If Theodore plays well, not great, these guys could make a run.
Do you think the Penguins are a much improved team the second half of the season?
Matthew Barnaby (3:49 PM)
I think they will be. They have had a lot of injuries, and they key to Pittsburgh will be getting Gonchar back. I really see Ray Shero making a trade to either bolster their offense a bit or add a D at the deadline. They should make the playoffs, but I don't see them as dominant as they were last year.
Josh (Oklahoma City)
Do you agree with Barry, the Stars make the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (3:50 PM)
I do. I thought they would have been much better than they have been, even with the injuries to Morrow and Zubov, and the debacle with Avery. This is a playoff team and has started to play like one.
The lightning are on a roll these past 8 games and are only 7 points from 8th place in the conference. Can they make a run at the playoffs? What do you think needs to happen for that?
Matthew Barnaby (3:51 PM)
I don't see them making the playoffs. Mike Smith has been awesome this year. Vinny has started to heat up, but at the end of the day, they still have an AHL defense corps. Points will start to get tougher, and they will start to slide.
If you had to pick, who would you rather keep in detorit... Hossa or Franzen? thanks!
Matthew Barnaby (3:52 PM)
I would keep Hossa, only because Thomas Holmstrom is there to cover the front of the net, where Franzen scores most of his goals. Hossa is a gamebreaker. Can't I have both?
Matthew, why does New Jersey always get overlooked, especially this year.
Matthew Barnaby (3:53 PM)
I, for one, overlook them all the time, because they are so boring to watch. You would think, after all these years, no matter who they put in the uniform, with all the injuries, all they do is keep winning. Lou Lamarillo runs a pretty good organization.
Matt, Who is the best player in the NHL right now?
Matthew Barnaby (3:54 PM)
I would say right now, Ovechkin is the best player. But, if I had to pick first overall, and both players were available, I would take Crosby, for the simple fact that a center makes the players around him better.
Matt, what has been going on with the Penguins? They have such good talent but it seems like it goes to waste
Matthew Barnaby (3:56 PM)
They do have a lot of talent, but offense starts on the back end. With Gonchar out, it has put a lot of pressure on guys that aren't used to it. Malkin and Crosby are 1-2 in scoring, but you need more than two guys. Losing Malone and Hossa were killers. This is not the same team.
Who will be the next Coach Fired??
Matthew Barnaby (3:57 PM)
This is an easy one. Alain Vigneault. Vancouver has struggled, and now there are no more excuses. Sundin has been back for a few weeks, and they are finally healthy.
Matthew Barnaby (3:57 PM)
Look forward to talking to you guys next week. Lot of great games tonight, good luck to everyone!
