Join us here at 12:30 p.m. ET to chat with Erik Kuselias!
ESPNRadio.com (12:30 PM)
Hey everyone...Erik Kuselias is filling in for Scott Van Pelt today. He'll be here to answer all your questions until the start of Tirico & Van Pelt on ESPN Radio.
Erik Kuselias (12:31 PM)
Hi I'm here. I want to set the record for the most questions in a half hour, fire away.
Nate (Bethesda, MD)
Admit it, you loved every minute of Duke getting stomped last night
Erik Kuselias (12:32 PM)
Of course I did. Duke is like Notre Dame, Yankees, you love them or hate them. And watching them get stomped had me cheering til the bitter end. I just wish Clemson had put up 100.
Steiny (NYC)
What is the latest on Cassel? Does it look as if the Patriots are going to franchise him?
Erik Kuselias (12:34 PM)
Yeah, the Patriots are going to franchise him, and then trade him. This is a no-brainer. It's like going to the video store and finding out Jessica Alba is in a movie where she is showing more than leg and your wife asks if you want to rent it. No brainer.
Randy B (Hamilton OH)
Will you be a regular on ESPN Radio anytime soon? I miss your regular show.
Erik Kuselias (12:34 PM)
I'm doing a bunch of TV & Radio, but I am on Radio Saturday mornings 7-10 AM ET. Send me an email and say hello.
Erik Kuselias (12:34 PM)
We only have 15 questions? Seriously, rapid fire...let's go!!!!
Arbo (Juno Beach, FL)
I am a recent law school graduate with a specialization in sports law and know you are an attorney as well. In economy where legal jobs are very limited, any advice on legal or non-legal jobs in the sports world?
Erik Kuselias (12:35 PM)
New York used to have a lottery promotion, you can't win if you don't play. Find a way in. Volunteer to mop floors, play for free. You can't get discovered if you're not playing.
Todd (Canton Oh)
Are you psyched for Kobe v. LeBron this weekend? Sorry that would be Lakers v. Cavs
Erik Kuselias (12:36 PM)
It's hard to get pumped up for a regular season game in a sport that is only judged by the post-season. But, that being said, I'll check out a little bit of this just to see how they go head to head.
Efrain (Chicago,ILL)
Do you think that la lakers should make a trade to replace Bynum
Erik Kuselias (12:37 PM)
It's hard under the NBA rules to make trades. There was a report this week that Shaq wanted back in with LA. Hard to believe after the "Hey Kobe how does my ___ taste?" that he could be a Laker again, but if they could find a way to send $20 mill back to Phoenix, they could.
Randy B (Hamilton OH)
Who do you think will be NASCAR 2009 winner?
Erik Kuselias (12:38 PM)
I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure that they're going to turn left to do it. Like the Braves winning 15 straight division titles, you have to bet on Jimmie Johnson until someone else takes it from him.
ATrn (Chitown)
"Swingers", "Planes,Trains, & Auto", or Big Lebowski.....pick one
Erik Kuselias (12:39 PM)
Big Lebowski's funniest moments were the best. PTA was the most solid, Swingers was the most overrated.
Brad (Carlisle, PA)
Erik, how annoyed do you get when they call you to fill in for Greeny at 3am because he has a hangnail?
Erik Kuselias (12:39 PM)
Getting up at 3am is a little like jumping into a pool of freezing cold water. No matter how many times you do it, you may know what it's going to feel like, but it still isn't all that fun. But I do like the show, it's always fun to do. In fact, I'm doing it tomorrow. (Plug)
Adam (Detroit, MI)
Well Erik...Who's gonna be in the SuperBowl next year?
Erik Kuselias (12:41 PM)
Since you're from Detroit I'll throw you a bone. I GUARANTEE the Lions will make the playoffs...oh wait...Scott's not here today. Seriously, I like the Colts and I think that the NFC will give us a surprise team. Maybe Carolina.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
Kobe or LeBron and why?
Erik Kuselias (12:41 PM)
Kobe, because he's just better.
Scott (Nicholson, PA)
What is your take on the growing interest and media coverage that is National Signing Day?
Erik Kuselias (12:42 PM)
It's like a car wreck on the side of the highway, or the painting of Kremer in Seinfield...I'm repulsed but I can't look away.
Jim (Chicago)
Are you gonna watch the pro bowl? Does anyone ever?
Erik Kuselias (12:43 PM)
The fact that some people watch the Pro Bowl shows how desperate we are for football in this country.
Brad (Carlisle, PA)
How much harder is it to do a radio show by yourself? I would think having to fill all the time with your own voice, not being able to ask questions, or have a back & forth would be immensely difficult for 3-4 hours. Your thoughts since you've done both?
Erik Kuselias (12:44 PM)
Doing the show alone allows you to go more in depth about things that you are passionate about. Having a co-host allows you to debate topics...it's like steak or lobster. What are you in the mood for?
aross6 (Barton, OH)
Do you think moving the Pro Bowl to the week between the AFC/NFC Championship games and Super Bowl will be beneficial, and if so beneficial to who???
Erik Kuselias (12:45 PM)
Yes, it would be great. The teams should arrive that day that are playing in the SB. At halftime, you should announce the team into the stadium. Which will make people watch the game. I like when games have meaning. I don't want preseason, I don't watch meaningless games in the CFB season, and I don't watch the Pro Bowl. The more incentive you can give me to watch, the more I am for it.
Erik Kuselias (12:46 PM)
Getting some questions on Phelps. Here's the bottom line from me....are you NOT going to buy the Rosetta Stone tapes and go to a different brand because Michael Phelps took a bong hit??
Frank Costanza's Attorney (In a Cape)
Is it safe to say that the Chicago Bears are the George Costanza of the NFL? Have you even seen a major market team so cheap when it comes to paying for talent? Serenity NOW!!!!!
Erik Kuselias (12:47 PM)
In the NFL there is no such thing as a major market team...because there is a salary cap. A guy in LA (Dodgerfan) may disagree with you, they have the ability to be a West Coast Yankees, and at least Red Sox...and instead they are dickering around with Manny Ramirez.
Jon (Minny)
If you were the Vikings, what would you give up to get Cassel?
Erik Kuselias (12:48 PM)
My left leg and my first born.
Zac (MN)
I think I am more likely to get the Rosetta Stoned tapes.
Erik Kuselias (12:48 PM)
Not bad. Not GOOD...but not bad.
Ryan: (Baltimore,MD)
What are your feelings on Bonds? Does he get into the hall?
Erik Kuselias (12:49 PM)
He'll get there....it's just 13.50 to buy a ticket. By the way, if you're ever looking for a good bachelor party idea, a trip to the Hall of Fame and then to Montreal. It's outstanding.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I understand that Phelps next Rosetta Stone ad will feature him learning to speak Rastafarian.
Erik Kuselias (12:49 PM)
You're better than that.
Justin (Chicago)
I'm not going to buy a Speedo. But, that's for personal reasons.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Love your passion for sports...what made you leave the law profession behind (especially the money) for a radio gig?
Erik Kuselias (12:50 PM)
Because it's sports. Anytime you have the opportunity to take a job where watching the game is working, you leap first and ask questions later.
John (Chitown)
Can you PLEASE tell your bosses that we don't need this much Bonds/Clemens coverage? We just don't care! We all know they're guilty. The trial's not even until March and we're thru the roof with over-coverage.
Erik Kuselias (12:51 PM)
Okay, I posted it. I assume they read these pages.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
The next time LeBron drops 50+ in the Garden, does it happen in the home team's uniform?
Erik Kuselias (12:52 PM)
I hope so. The one thing that last night showed me is that the NBA will be more exciting if Lebron is in NY. Sorry Cleveland. Don't shoot the messenger.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Is anyone going to step in at the last minute and bid in the Manny Sweepstakes?
Erik Kuselias (12:52 PM)
We'll talk to Peter Gammons today (2:12 ET) and I'll ask them that.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Favorite Vegas resort/casino?
Erik Kuselias (12:53 PM)
Spa at Encore (new Wynn resort), Vibe at Mandalay Bay (love the Russian room). Dig the pool at Caesar's.
Erik Kuselias (12:54 PM)
The most UNDERrated is the Mirage. A penthouse suite at the Mirage is like $150 a night for like 1400 sq feet. It's great.
TJ, Vermont
What would you say is your primary job with ESPN? I feel like I see you everywhere!
Erik Kuselias (12:55 PM)
To be everywhere...my official title is "Beck and Call (insert rhymes with witch)". Speaking of Beck, Gamma Ray very underrated.
NR
I hear you were getting your own show, "Erik's Got Issues"... any truth to this? And, where can I see it? Can't wait!
Erik Kuselias (12:55 PM)
It's coming, we'll keep you posted...trying to set a date to start this thing.
Really Confused
How old is J.B. of Dunmore PA and what do you do for a living? He is in every chat transcript I read!
Erik Kuselias (12:56 PM)
Quick trivia note...JB and I are born on the same month, same day, and same year. And we are both Disney freaks...and we've never spoken. Yes, he's in every chat...and I always assumed there's more than one JB.
Genie P. (West Warwick)
Who does time sooner: Clemens or Bonds? I'd like to say hi to all US VETERANS!!!
Erik Kuselias (12:56 PM)
Probably Bonds.
JP (Chicago)
Any other bachelor party ideas? We're open to anything in the U.S./Canada.
Erik Kuselias (12:57 PM)
Yes, see previous post about Vegas.
Erik Kuselias (12:57 PM)
JB...at this point I'm waiting for your response so I can go do my Radio show.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
There is just one me and there are chats I skip out on. BTW EK, we have spoken back in the day when you had the 4:00 PM show.
Erik Kuselias (12:58 PM)
No age and job description? See just like our guests, never answering the question.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I am an accountant by trade and am good at using spreadsheets and multi-tasking. Leave it at that.
Erik Kuselias (12:59 PM)
That mystery is solved. We're done here. Keep chatting at ESPNRadio.com by clicking on Tirico & Van Pelt.
ESPNRadio.com (1:01 PM)
Hello friends! It is 1p on Thursday, which means it's time to simultaneously listen to Tirico & Van Pelt and chat. I hope everyone is able to multi-task today.
Eric (Chicago)
Michael Phelps ruined his image as much as Bonds, McGwire, Clemens and all other athletes who do stupid drugs, steroids, etc. There is no place for them in sports and they should never be allowed to compete again. The 3 ball players are now done and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the HOF. Phelps, same thing, done in the pool.
ESPNRadio.com (1:01 PM)
I think that's a bit extreme. What does everyone else here think about the Phelps fallout?
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Hello ESPNRadio.com - is this Frank today?
ESPNRadio.com (1:03 PM)
It is. Hello to you, Lisa. What are your thoughts?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
If it was Phelps' first time messing up, I might be able to forgive him but that's his 2nd offense. My entire family sees him in a different light and it isn't a good one.
Brad (Wiseman)
What Phelps did was stupid, no questions question about it, but it was a banned substance and it didn't enhance his ability to compete........ Roid Head Bonds needs to have all records revoke today on Hammer Hanks 75th birthday!
Jamey (Ohio)
I think Phelps should admit to the picture, but say there was no weed in the bong. " I was just fooling about at a party, posing and pretending for fun. I didnt think about the situation that would occur if the picture actually leaked out". No one would go for it but still haha
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Phelps: Did marijuana. Who. Cares. If you polled how many football and basketball pros who did pot, it'd probably be more than half.
aross6 (Barton, OH)
Phelps druge use, although not condoned by any means, was recreational, not performance enhancing. Bonds, McGwire, Clemens hurt the validity of their sports, Phelps did not. Get over it!
Joe (Chicago)
I think Eric in Chicago is an idiot.
ESPNRadio.com (1:04 PM)
Kill 'em with kindness. That's what I always say.
aross6 (Barton, OH)
Phelps already did admit to the picture and apologized Jamey
Don't care (Dontcaresville)
Don't care about Phelps.
rerun (su)
re: phelps...it was WEED! big deal, it weasn't like he was snorting coke off of a coed's stomach...
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Being from Maryland, I am sooo Phelps out...
Justin (Chicago)
He's 23 years old. He's trained every single day for how long before the Olympics? Let him have some fun if he wants. It sucks that he's always in the public eye. I couldn't handle it if it were me.
Eric (Chicago)
Weed IS A BIG DEAL...it's illegal. Hence illegal means not legal, means you don't do it.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
More concerning to Phelps than what we think, is whether the cops press charges - community service and actual criminal charges are more significant to his training and image than a random picture.
Joe (Chicago)
Comparing Phelps to Bonds, Clemens is not right. They were taking enhancements that helped them cheat their way through baseball. Phelps just did something dumb that I would venture to guess many people in this chat have also done.
Jamey (Ohio)
I know he did. I am saying deny there was weed in there. deny deny deny
Brad (Carlisle, PA)
Who is this Phelps guy? I have been hearing alot about him and some Barry & Roger duo. I can't seem to find 1 fiber of my body that cares though.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Gotta love the clowns who defend use of illegal drugs. Last I checked, weed was still illegal in the U.S.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Phelps should become the front man for legalizing pot. I'd vote for it with him leading the fight.
rerun (su)
weed is illegal...yes. Big deal...no.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
To Justin (from Chicago) - yes he is always in the public eye but he accepts the money for his endorsements...don't be stupid and let someone take a pic of you taking a bong hit...
Justin (Chicago)
Next topic, please.
ESPNRadio.com (1:09 PM)
I'd like to point out for the record that I said Steelers 27-20 in last week's chat. Just saying.
aross6 (Barton, OH)
How much DiGorno pizza is just playing around ESPN Studios these days?
ESPNRadio.com (1:09 PM)
Not enough.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
How many of USC's 7 top 150 are going to actually pan out, and how many end up duds?
Brad (Carlisle, PA)
If news was like it was before 24hour coverage and the internet, this would not be a huge story. Yes, it's illegal, not defending it. But if news services had to choose between this and the real major issues of the day, we would have heard about it for maybe 2 days and never again. But since there is 168 hours of television time to fill just for news, we will hear about this for months and months. It's ridiculous.
ESPNRadio.com (1:11 PM)
Part of the reason why I've always said 24-hour cable news networks are the worst thing ever to happen to the world (and I used to work at one).
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
How bad are things when National Signing Day becomes like a sports holiday? As I sent in yesterday, read, "For the Glory." A great recruiting class doesn't mean much on signing day. See me in four years and then we'll see how great the class was.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
CNN has that Showbiz Tonight thing on every night for like an hour. Are people really that interested in what celebrity has screwed up his or her life yet again?
ESPNRadio.com (1:16 PM)
No, and that is the network I used to work for! While we're on the topic of news, what is with throwing shoes at world leaders? The trend seems to be sweeping the globe.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Nike could start sponsoring those press conferences.
Ken (NC)
Yea, Bonds is pleading not guilty...sure...& Roger is innocent, too....and since we are in Faireytale land, the Dodgers have offered me $25mil to replace Manny.....
ESPNRadio.com (1:19 PM)
Next question for all of you to ponder: how does MLB handle Bonds' statistics and records if he is eventually convicted?
Ken (NC)
REMOVE them!! just like Michigan's fab five NCAA - vacated....never happened..... & Hammerin Hank (Happy 75th Hank) goes back on top where he belonged anyway
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
The records of Bonds and any other guy who is proven to have used steriods stay but all go into a special wing of the HOF near the rest rooms with an asterisk attached to each. None of the players can be elected to the HOF though.
Scott (Nicholson, PA)
The stats should stay in the books just like those of the past century. Bonds was far from the only one using PEDs, and removing only one person when hundreds of others were using them seems to be a joke. The juiced era of baseball will have its stories, much like the dead ball era and so on.
Tobias (Beckley, WV)
As long as Bynum is out the Lakers don't have the inside game (either offense or defense) to counter the Celtics. Every weakness the Lakers have are exploited by what the Celtics do well. Quick PG..physical play by the 4s and 5s. By the way, this comes from a life-long Lakers fan.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
JB, those top recruits usually aren't still in school in 4 years time... or is that your point?
Bob (Chicago)
You don't do anything. A record is a record and it was broken. If they didn't want Bonds to break the record, they needed to do something before he broke it.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
The only thing that will make me interested in the NBA again would be LeBron playing for the Knicks. Unless that happens, I will find it hard to follow the game.
rerun (su)
what about the 'roided up pitchers that were pitching to them? level playing field...
ESPNRadio.com (1:26 PM)
We are missing a lot of the regulars today. Tragic.
Ken (NC)
Yea, but do you hear people talking about the great ERAs of teh dead ball era??? NO....The fact is, anyone who is proven guilty of using PEDs should have their stats removed....the "everybody did it" argument doesnt make any more sense now than it did when i was 4 and my dad asked "if everybody else jumped off a bridge......."
rerun (su)
a sad chapter of the sport...time to move on.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
That is my point I-Like_Iowa-Teams. In that book (about a PSU recruiting class) I believe there was only one player from the class who did anything of significance for the PSU football program. Many of these kids can't hack it or, in today's game, don't stick around long enough because the NFL is calling.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I'm actually one of the regulars. It's up to you to figure out which one though.
ESPNRadio.com (1:28 PM)
I know. Not all of them are missing.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Where is Kylie and where is our friend from Scranton?
ESPNRadio.com (1:28 PM)
Probably at Dunder-Mifflin.
Tobias (Beckley, WV)
The Comminish should simply erase the records...records matter in Baseball it has a intergrity all its own and to have a period of time (roids-era) to compromise over 100yrs of records keeping shows how much the Commish really cares about the intergrity of the game. Morals are just words until they are challenged then you have a chance to validate what you say you believe and care about.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Lisa: Are you referring to Johnny from Scranton? I know him.
Ken (NC)
roided up pitchers??? how many pitchers look like Mr. Olympia??? how many of them have their heads grow 1.5 hat sizes...shoe size goes up 2 sizes?? if all the roided up pitchers were so great, how come the average era is up 1-1.5 runs per game during the roid era????
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Leave the records. When they are broken in the next era of baseball, hopefully by non-roided up players, they will mean that much more
Ken (NC)
thank you tobias!
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
You are fascinated with 'The Office'
ESPNRadio.com (1:31 PM)
Have been since early on. The British one is good, too, but different in that dark English humor sort of way.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Every time a player looks at one of those records, its a challenge to them to erase it from the books, to erase that smirch upon the MLB honor
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
THey don't erase records because players play more games in today's era, or because games go into more innings, or because of salary caps in football or the NBA, or... etc etc. You play the game.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
The Office is possibly the best comedy series on TV right now and when you live in the area described in the show, it's even funnier.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
J.B. - are you Johnny from Scranton?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
The records stay but the story behind them should come with them. Future generations should know not only about the records but what was done to get them.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
I'm partial to Futurama myself
ESPNRadio.com (1:35 PM)
I really enjoyed Sunday's episode of 'The Office.' Though, I will say that '30 Rock' has made me laugh more consistently this season. However, I love them all like they're my children and am proud of them regardless.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Still on the baseball thing - While I don't think you erase records, I think you DO recognize that those records were set by roid users, and those roiders don't go to the hall of fame in my opinion. Those records become more of a statement then - public record of those roid pusher's crimes against the sport
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Sounds like ILIT and I are on the same page.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Lisa: Not confirming your assumption but certainly not denying it.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
I don't really have a chance to watch TV...by the time we get the kids down to bed, clean up dinner and get lunches packed, it is bedtime...
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Thank heavens for ESPN.com then. (Shameless network plug)
ESPNRadio.com (1:40 PM)
So now that the NFL season is over (let's forget about the Pro Bowl for argument's sake), what are you looking forward to from the world of sports over the coming months?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Geez Lisa how many kids do you have? Our two girls are in bed by 9:00 PM.
Heeb (TX)
762* 73*
Tobias (Beckley, WV)
Comparing to a records validatiy based on variables that are part of the exsisting rules of the time are things that cause different generations to have common ground when it comes to talking baseball (part of what makes the game unique) Roids are not part of a rule change ect (lowering the mound) that is done with pure intent whether it actually improved the game is for debate. Roids is an attempt to lessen the control those rules have on a game, therefore stats accumulated by those players should be removed.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Must... not... talk... about... college football....
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Well Webmaster(mistress?) I am looking forward to draft day, and spring training, late sign ups, then the new college football season!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
In the coming months I look forward to hopefully watching Syracuse and PSU do well in the NCAA tournament, hopefully seeing the Penguins get hot and into the playoffs, and the start of baseball, in particular the Braves and Yankees' seasons.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
J.B. - we have 2 little boys...they are in bed by 8:30, clean up from dinner, pack lunches for the next day, fold up a load of laundry, take showers, then head to bed...I am not a night owl - much more of an early bird - nothing better than getting up and getting moving...
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
If the Vikings either draft a QB with the first pick or trade it for a QB, then I will look forward to the NFL draft.
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Honestly, I sit here and wonder why Iowa doesn't have a single pro team of note.

Tobias is my hero!
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
I am looking forward to the ACC tournament, NCAA tournament (although I don't think my beloved Terps will make it this year) and the draft...
ESPNRadio.com (1:45 PM)
I'm looking forward to hearing new ways the GW men's basketball team can invent to lose, the NCAA Tournament, hoping the Knicks make the playoffs and baseball season! I think the AL Central is going to be fascinating this year. You can come up with a realistic scenario for each of the five teams to win the division.
Ken (NC)
i agree w/ Lisa....ACC tourney & NCAA tourney...hopefully my Heels will wins both... :)
I-Like-Iowa-Teams (Iowa)
Cassel or Leftwich(sp?) go to the vikings I think. Pittsburgh and new england don't contend with minnesota to actually get to the superbowl, so its a safe trade/releaes for them

Ken (NC)
If they are smart they will try to at least trade Young for a draft pick and then try to find someone next year in free agency to replace Collins....

I think they should cut Young but I think that Bud Adams is stilled enamored with him
Ken (NC)

I work P/T for the SWB Yankees. Stringers are the guys who type in the code so you can follow games on MLB.com and MiLB.com. It's basically 21st century scorekeeping.
ESPNRadio.com (2:01 PM)
Ohhh. Yes, I know what that is. I had football on my mind because you said GameDay and I got confused. I'm programmed like a robot now. And you work for the Yankees? Good man.
