Buzzmaster (11:46 AM)
Dan will be here at the top of the hour to chat!
Dan Rafael (12:01 PM)
Greetings, Fight Freaks. Plenty to discuss this week with Calzaghe retiring, Darchinyan-Arce on tap tomorrow, the Chagaev PPV, the new Azteca America series starting and a good FNF card with Henry vs. Mack and prospect Fernando Guerrero. Also check out this week's blogs and today's huge notebook. Let's get right to it.
Grant Gurtin (San Diego,CA)
I temporarily purchased the Spanish package to watch Whitfield-Navarez this weekend. What should I expect from Whitfield?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
Good little fight. Hard to win on the road against a good fighter like Narvaez, but Whitfield has a chance because he is a very good all-around talent. I think it will be a bit of a chess match.
Mike (Chicago)
Any word on the Bradley-Holt Co-Feature?
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
TBA at the moment.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Whats up Dan, I got Arce by tko in 9. Mayorga is a fool. Im still pumped to see Angulo fight anyway.
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
Bold prediction. I expect a good scrap but I think Darchinyan stops Arce. Mayorga just off his rocker, but what do you expect? He's always been a bit nuts. I am also excited to see Perro. He is one of my favorite prospects.
Aziz (Newcastle, Uk)
DTM!! Great notebook and hyped for the lightweight tournament for Golden Boy; has Winky said if he is still interested in fighting the likes of Pavlik after Paul Williams? Many thanks
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
The Golden Boy lightweight card does look pretty interesting and the proposed fights all look solid. So you get some good fights and some guys emerge with solid wins and a chance at a bigger fight. If Winky does get past Williams, I am sure he would want to fight the likes of Pavlik. But if the Pavlik side is interested, Winky will need to be realistic about the deal.
joe
any news on margarito and the wraps?
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
Nothing new yet. The hearing is Feb. 10.
Bob (Tacoma, WA)
Who wins Mack or Henry?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
Solid fight on ESPN2. I like Henry to win it. I thought he showed a lot despite his loss to Diaconu.
Mark (Chicago)
Any word on a replacement for Mayorga? What an idiot!
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
Danny Perez is in. Check out the top item in the quick hits in today's notebook, which is already posted.
Wil (Toronto)
Who is Lajuan Simon and why is he fighting Arthur Abraham for a middleweight title?
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
Because he has a great padded record and he probably came cheap.
Pat (NY)
Why did HBO reject Ishe Smith? I think that would be a good contrast in styles.
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Why would HBO accept him? Terrible style fight. And what has Ishe done lately to deserve the fight anyway?
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
Read the notebook. Thank god Froch agreed to face Taylor. Now we can have a meaningful fight.
JKGaucho (DC)
Dan, over or under 1000 tickets sold or Williams-Wright at Mandalay.
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Over. But remember -- I didn't say how much over.
Rick, Marina, Ca
What are your thoughts now Joe C. has officially retired ? Im sorry, but I just never thought he was all that great, especially since he tried to say Boxing is dead what an idiot.
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
Joe was a terrific fighter and accomplished a lot. You can easily argue that is the most accomplished 169 pounder ever. I wish him well in retirement and will be voting for him on the first ballot when he is eligible for the HOF.
Rob (Fort Worth, TX)
Sup Dan, I am depressed that Mayorga's antics has eliminated him from the card next week. Can you give me a breakdown of this Danny Perez fellow? Will he be a threat to Angulo?
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
Perez was an excellent welter contender several years ago. He fought Margarito twice, lost twice but one was a close split decision. Fought for a title. Just a good hard-nosed brawler who has made some pleasing fights. He's from San Diego. Spent three years retired from 05-08 but since coming back he's 3-0. He looked very, very good easily beating Julio Garcia last September on the Marquez-Casamayor undercard. He has a great chin. The fight doesn't have as much name value without Mayorga but I still view it as a serious test for Angulo, who only has 14 fights. I also think it will be a high-contact brawl.
Brian (Scottsdale, AZ)
How far do you think Fernando Guerrero will go. I saw him on showtime a while back and he looked pretty good.
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
I'm a fan. I was in Nashville for Taylor-Lacy and saw him score a massive, massive knockout on the undercard. Dude can crack. Had a chance to meet him at the hotel and chat with him for a bit the day before the fight. Could not have been a nicer guy. Besides having talent, one thing I love about him is that he draws a crowd. His hometown is really behind him and they turn out for his fights. Boxing can use all the attractions it can get.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Dan, Great Notebook today. You said the Williams-Wright fight is "Defintely" at the Mandalay Bay. Should I wait before I book my trip to Vegas until you feel more confident about the location?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
I didn't say definitely. Richard Schaefer said definitely. Richard is a man of his word, so I am pretty confident if he said definitely, it will be there.
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
I'm with Rick. He definitely is the best supermiddleweight of all time. It's just really hard to root for a guy who (A) makes that comment about his own sport (isnt he trying to be a promoter anyway?) and (B) faced his toughest competition in his last couple fights. I dont know, I'm prob nit-picking, but he just annoys me.
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
You annoy me too, but I don't hold it against you.
Luis: (Philadelphia):
Quintana and Judah are very tough fights for Berto I think he holds a power advantage over the two, but speed may be a problem. Your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
I wouldn't mind seeing Berto fight the winner of that fight if it happens. I think they both pose different dangers. Berto is a young titleholder and needs fights like those to keep moving up and gaining experience and respect.
David (CA)
arlovski is on the under card of williams vs wright, right?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
Yes.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, I ask the question every week, but is there any more information regarding ALexander vs Witter happening soon?
Dan Rafael (12:16 PM)
I have spoken to both Kevin Cunningham (Devon's trainer and manager) and to Don King (his promoter) in recent days. Nothing is definite other than the fight has been ordered by the WBC. King says he is working on it with Witter's people. Cunningham says they are anxious for the fight. It probably will happen in the April timeframe.
Cowboy Ron (Piston, PA)
Dan, can you address the rumors that Gary Shaw called you out and made references to you being "bought" for your opinions
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
Gary voiced his opinion about a blog I wrote and that is his right. But for him or anyone to say I am bought, well they are ignorant. Gary and everyone else is entitled to their opinion and so am I. If he didn't like what I wrote, I don't care and I told him that. Funny thing is, since his low-class move, I have talked to him numerous times. It's all part of the business. I can dish it out, but I can also take it. You just move on.
Steiny (NYC)
Which of the following fights are you most excited for. Kirkland-Julio, Ortiz-Arnaoutis or Guerrero-Yordan?
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. By fat, Julio vs. Kirkland. Will be a war. Can't wait. Rest of the card is also good, but that fight is clearly the best of them.
Joel (NY)
Dan, is JCC Jr. new opponent going to be any better or worse for him?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
I looked at the new guy's record and it is built against a bunch of stiffs, mostly guys sub-.500.
jack, fort collins
if the alexander/witter fight comes together, is there any chance that don king puts it in st. louis?
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
Sure, it's possible.
Don King
I would be happy to Promote Dan The Man vs. Old Man Shaw
Todd (Ontario)
Your pick on Chagaev's fight this weekend? Also, would he dismantle Arreola if they fought?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
If Chagaev is healthy, he should smash Drummond, whose record is more padded than a flat chested girl's bra.
Joel (NY)
Will Arlovski's debut fight be televised you think dan?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
No, it won't be part of HBO's broadcast.
Jon (DC)
Dan, if you and Gary Shaw fought I can guarantee Showtime would televise it.
Steiny (NYC)
What are your thoughts on Froch ripping Calzaghe?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
He's frustrated he can't get a fight with him.
Steve,Sac, Ca
Dano, are we any closer to being official with Wlad and Haye?
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
I spoke to Vitali's manager, Bernd Boente, a few days ago. He said they are still in talks but nothing was definite.
JKGaucho (DC)
Dan, any updates as to PPV status of Pacman-Hatton? Which really means, how much did Showtime cause HBO to increase its price.
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
Nothing definite, but I expect HBO will land the fight.
WBC
We can guarantee that if you fight Gary Shaw we will sanction it for an interim regular title.
Brian (DC)
I give Rafael-Shaw at least a 50% chance of being more entertaining than any of the Manny-Oscar undercard fights.
Dustin (West Palm Beach)
Dan, Cunningham vs. Big Truck Braithwaite sounds looks great on paper, I give the edge to Braithwaite based on his heavier hands and Cunningham's borderline-suspect chin. What say you?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
I couldn't disagree more. I think Braithwaite is way past his best and Cunningham is faster and fresher. I think he beats Braithwaite.
Mark (Chicago)
Dan, do you think Calzaghe is truly retired? He did say "never say never..." which seems to be he could be doing with the idea that if he did fight again he could command more money...
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
I have no idea. How would I know? Of course, it's possible he will fight again. He says he's retired. So that's what it is.
Brian (iqaluit, NU)
Dan, Is Alexander Povetkin fighting Wladimir Klitschko this year?
Dan Rafael (12:27 PM)
That mandatory is due in the fall. If they both keep winning, that fight will happen.
Kevin (Stratford,CT)
Dan-o I paid the extra money for Azteca America and they have not been showing fights and theyre not in the listings
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
OK, Freaks, listen up, I have the rundown for you. It's a new series so the kinks aren't worked out yet, but here is what I got from Top Rank's Lee Samuels in anticipation of this question. First off tonight's show is on Azteca America live at 10 pm ET. It will be shown on tape delay on the West Coast at 9 pm PT.
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Also Azteca is on DirecTV ch. 442, Dish Network Ch. 825. Here are some other markets where it is available: Vegas Ch. 63, LA Ch. 20; Orange County Ch. 27; Phoenix Ch. 56; San Antonio Ch. 9. Hope this helps.
Steve, Sac, Ca
Dano, what chances do you give Rubio against Pavlik? Do you think it will be like the Lockett fight?
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
I think it will definitely be more competitive than that. Rubio can punch.
Alex Cle, OH
Who is Gamboa going to fight on the 20th?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
No opponent is set yet, but don't expect anyone too tough. And, if you care, I will be in the FNF studio that night with Brian Kenny as co-host.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Dan, you headed to NYC on Feb. 21st?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
Yes.
Mike (Chicago)
Is JuanMa-Penalosa signed for 4/25?
Dan Rafael (12:34 PM)
Not yet. Penalosa's manager, Billy Keane, told me yesterday that Lopez "is still refusing to sign." I expect it will get done.
Mike(Charlotte)
What ever happened to Povetkin taking on Jason Estrada?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
He is.
Mike (New York)
Dan, I read your notebook this morning but have youheard anything about Zab facing Urango instead of Quintanna? He was on Hot 97 and said he was looking for a belt holder at 140, and then hoping to get Hatton after that.
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Zab probably WANTS to fight Urango, but there is nothing concrete on that fight. I am sure Urango would be interested if the cash was right. Would be a good fight.
Briks, Philly
I didn't see the Vic-Z Gorres fight. Was Vic robbed in Gorres homeland, or was it a legit draw?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
I saw it. Vic probably should have won it close, but I didn't have a problem with the decision.
Berndawg
Azteca America is Channel 13 in Chicago, start time is 9pm here tonight, freaks.
Tim (Denver,CO)
Double Dan, I see on the schedule it say Alvarado vs TBA in Youngstown. Do you know who the possible TBA is gonna be?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
Not yet.
Philly Geoff (NC)
DTM... is the Kid Diamond fight part of the telecast for tomorrow? What is your take on that fight?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Yes, his fight with DeMarco will open the Showtime telecast. Good, solid fight. A good test for DeMarco and a chance for Kid Diamond to get back in the groove. Should be an entertaining match.
Joe, RI
I was able to convince my girlfriend that for HER birthday we should fly to Vegas and see Hatton/Pacquaio. And she bought it! Whats my Freak status?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Impressive. Most impressive.
Peter (Philadelphia)
What are B-Hop's options now? Does Calzaghe's retirement also effectively end Hopkins career?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
Good question. I never thought Joe would give Hopkins a rematch even if he hadn't retired, so BHop would still be sort of stuck without a big opponent. But it's not like there aren't quality guys for BHop to fight. If he wants to fight, there's Chad Dawson, a third fight with Taylor, Kessler, etc... They may not be worth as much as Calzaghe, but life's not fair.
Philly Geoff (NC)
Can you confirm that the MAB/Kahn fight is still on? It was reported on another web site that it was off.
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
The fight is on.
Dan (Brooklyn, NY)
Do you think DiBella is serious about putting Berto in with Cotto this summer, if Margs falls out?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
I do think that for the right deal, they would make that fight. Yes.
R!
So Mayorga fighting Angulo is a definite no at this point? Or possibility he caves in and fights next weekend?
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
That ship has apparently sailed. Angul is going to fight Danny Perez and Mayorga is out.
Rick, Marina, Ca
How serious was MAB cut? Did you see it.
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
Yes, I saw it on the Net and also got a DVD of the fight. It was not THAT bad of a cut, but it was vertical and in a terrible spot -- over his left eye toward the bridge of his nose, so if it opened blood would literally fall right into his eye.
Ron, Vancouver
What is it about Paul Willams that makes it so easy to dislike him?? I can't stand the guy.
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
It's funny, I was thinking the same thing about you.
blake (arkansas)
have you heard about any possible locations ( in the U.S.) for the taylor fight?
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
It could be just about anywhere, although I am told that contractually it can't be in Arkansas or Kentucky.
Banishment
I like Paul Williams. I don't like Ron, but will gladly have him.
Ali (Dearborn, MI)
Hey Dan, can you discuss what caused the problem between Bob Arum and Al Haymon?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Floyd Mayweather started it. They also had a huge blowup over a possible Pavlik-Williams fight.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Does Arreola have an opponent yet?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
No.
Alex, Cle, OH
I will be at the Pavlik fight in Y-Town, will they be showing the Cotto fight before Kelly or after? Also will we see any of the Cotto undercards? I would like to see Duddy fight...
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
The Cotto fight will be before Kelly fights. From what Arum told me you will see your live undercard in the arena in Youngstown while the folks in NYC see their undercard. In Youngstown, the live undercard will end and you will see the Cotto fight on the screens. In NY, folks will see the Cotto fight (the main event there) and then afterward see the live Pavlik fight on the screens if they elect to stick around and watch it.
Dan, San Diego
Also, Azteca is channel 15 on time warner here in san diego...FNF tonight, then shobox, then azteca...then vic/arce tomorrow...pretty solid weekend fellow freaks!
Steiny (NYC)
What was the first thing that went through your head when you heard that Joe Calzaghe had decided to retire?
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
That I wasn't surprised at all.
jack, fort collins
how can you not like paul williams? down to earth guy out of the ring and volume punching mad man in it. what's not to like?
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
I agree.
felix (Puerto Rico)
is lyakovic a viable option for the next arreola fight
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
I actually think that would be a reasonable opponent for Cris to fight. And if the Arreola people were willing to make the match, I don't think it would be too hard of a deal to make since Sergei is not tied to a promoter.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Very excited to see Andre Ward in action tonight. Will "Sugar Poo" put up much of a fight?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
I like Ward a lot but I am not too into this fight. I mean it's OK, but whatever. Ward is way faster than Buchanan and better in my opinion.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Will Perez/Angulo still be the main event or will Campbell/Funeka be bumped up?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
I don't know for sure, but I would be surprised if Angulo-Perez remained the main event. It sure doesn't deserve to be.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, Great call on Kotelnik having a tough madatory in Maidana. I think Maidana stops him. I have a friend in Argentina that has followed him from the beginning, and has sent me many of his fights. This guy can crack, and I think he will be too much for Kotelnik. Thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
I agree. Maidana is a brutal puncher and I think he has a major chance to win.
Jon (DC)
Dan, why has Dan Goosen never made Paul Williams into a local attraction in the South? He hasn't fought in that region in years.
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
I have no idea. The Goose does the vast majority of his shows in California.
Randall (Tampa)
hey Dan, I read my Chapters (notebook) and now im read for class (Chat)!
JR (Chicago, IL)
I love Teddy Atlas, but was he watching the same fight as everybody else last week? I thought his score of the Urango fight was far sillier than the 120-106 given by one judge. During the 7th round, where I think Urango outlanded Ngoudjo by about 40-5, Teddy was lamenting the fact that Urango wasn't going to the body (which he did the whole round) and gave the round to Ngoudjo.
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
I generally agree with Teddy's scoring of fights, but last week he was way off, especially scoring a 10-8 rounds when Urango scored two clean knockdowns and clearly dominated the round.
Joe (Clovis, NM)
Chris Meyer (Sauerland Event General Manager) said, "We are still in close touch with Top Rank, Pavlik's promoters." Sounds to me like if Abraham and Pavlik win their next fights, than Abraham/Pavlik is on.
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
He's dreaming I think.
Josh (dublin)
Have you heard anything about JCC Jr vs Duddy this summer? is that just a rumor?
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
IF, a big IF, Top Rank can work out some sort of long-term deal with Duddy, which it would like to do, a fight with Chavez is something they'd be interested in doing.
Tim (Denver, CO)
I see Mike Alverado is on the under card in Youngstown on the Pavlik card. Any chance of that being on the PPV version? Also do you see Mike getting any big names to fight in '09?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
Since I know you have a man crush on Alvarado -- because you ask questions about him every week, bordering on stalking him -- I want to break it to you nicely: No, Alvarado is not scheduled for the broadcast. You might get lucky to see a clip.
Paul B (NY, NY)
I just got done with a meeting and settled down with my lunch while catching up on the chat. I literally spat my sandwich out when I read your padded record analogy. Thanks for the Bday laugh and keep up the great work!
Chris (FL)
Have you ever watched MMA? What do you think of it?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
Next.
Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)
I'd like to see Khan-Prescott 2.
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
In due time I would think.
Grey (Cape Cod, MA)
Dan, did you happen to catch a clip of Tommy Morrison fighting that scrub? It wasn't even technically a pure boxing match and it looked like his opponent looked a dive (WWE quality acting).
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
It was pathetic. I saw it.
Pancho, Los Mochis
What do you know about Daud Yordan - can the guy fight?
Dan Rafael (12:57 PM)
He's going to fight Robert Guerrero on HBO on March 7. He has fought in America once and I was at the fight in Vegas. He's from Indonesia, where I am told he is quite popular. I don't recall being very impressed (or unimpressed) by the fight of his I saw.
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Dan, Will we be gifted by a RAD tomorrow night?
Dan Rafael (12:59 PM)
Yes, the first RAD of the new year will be Saturday night at approximately 10:45 ET. I hope all the Freaks can make it.
Joel (NY)
Dan, do you think the April Goldenboy lightweight PPV will be worth ordering?
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
Based on the matchups Richard Schaefer outlined (which are in today's notebook), it does look like a fun card. I hope they price it right.
Andrew (Providence, RI)
Dan, attending the chat on my iPhone so apologies for any bad spelling. . Great stuff on that lightweight tournament. I was at the Urango fight in Montreal. Do they know how to pit on a fight or what? Definitely worth the 7 hour drive.
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
The Canadian promoters do a good job putting on their shows and the Montreal fans are great.
Barry (RI)
This, im sure is a very dumb question, but what is an RAD?
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Rafael After Dark chat -- a late-night Saturday chat after a big fight card.
Hollywood Hulk Hogan (ripping shirt off)
Are you pumped for Wrestlemania, BROTHER?!?!?!?!
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Of course, but we have No Way Out first!
Rick, Marina, Ca
Tickets for the San Jose tripleheader with your love child vs Kirland go on sale today @10am. Me and the wife and friends will be going. Its gon be great.
Brian (DC)
Assuming Cotto wins in a few weeks... who would you say is most likely to be Mosley's next opponent at this point?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
Totally up in the air. It all depends on what happens with Margarito's hearing. If he is cleared, I guess we'll see the rematch. If he is not cleared and suspended, we could see any nunber of fights -- Mosley, Berto, Clottey, whomever.
Aziz (Newcastle, Uk)
I will be watching Arce-darchinyan at 3am in the UK while afterwards being part of your RAD chat Dan.. is that worthy of being a freak?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
No because that is what you should be doing anyway. It is nothing above and beyond.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
I'm actually a little pumped for Montiel-Morel. Does Morel have enough left in the tank to give Montiel a tough scrap?
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
You have to like Montiel in the fight, but Morel has looked decent since coming out of prison.
David (Baldwin Park, CA)
Do you think Arce has to box to win or in your face pressure all twelve rounds?
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
Arce is not capable of boxing for 12 rounds and winning. He never has. He is all about pressure and slugging.
Daniel Jacobs
When will I be in action again?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
Supposed to be back in action Feb. 28 in Houston on the Marquez-Diaz card.
Ricardo Mayorga
I refuse to chat with you unless I am given $8 million.
Rick, Marina, Ca
Whats up Dan, buy or sell the Darchy-Arce fight goes all 12 rounds?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
Sell.
Freudis Rojas
I can't believe I was allowed in the same ring as Marco Antonio Barrera.
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
Disgusting. What a sham of a fight and a sham of an opponent.
Brian (DC)
Shaefer said after the Mosley win that his first move would be to call the Mayweather camp... Any word on what their response was?
Dan Rafael (1:08 PM)
They've talked but if you have read Richard's comments, any talks will be conducted in private, His goal is to make the fight, not talk about it and have it not happen. Hopefully, it can get made, but Mayweather has to want it.
Steve (CT)
How about Judah vs Quintana on the Dawson/Tarver card?
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
Nice idea, but don't hold your breath.
Eric (Omaha, NE)
Have you ever seen a 5 minute round before the Ngoudjo vs. Urango fight? How could no one catch that?
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
Had never seen that. I have watched enough boxing in my time to sort of have an approximate 3-minute clock in my head so that was stunning. I have no idea what happened there.
jack, fort collins
what's up next for vanes matrosyan? it seems to me that hes generally left out when we talk about the young guns at 154. do you think he's ready to contend for a title in that loaded division?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
He fights this weekend on the Darchinyan-Arce undercard.
Mike Philadelphia
I'm a big Chad Dawson fan, but I'm wondering where he goes after the 2nd Tarver fight, what do you think Dan?
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
Remains to be seen. I'd like to see him give Glen Johnson a rematch.
Grant (San Diego,CA)
Arum said Valero will be fighting at Jr Lightweight. Will he be fighting Pitalua or not? Wouldn't Katsidis be a good opponent for Valero in the tourney?
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
That was a mistake. He is fighting at 135.
Kevin (Stratford,CT)
Hey Dan whats up, is Azteca America going to actually show the fight tonight ?
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Yes. Check back in the chat transcript for the particulars.
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Dan, Can you please use your vast powers of persuasion to convince the ESPN website gate keepers to please restore the old boxing web set-up. It has become a kamikazee exercise to find items on the site. Obe day an article is listed then it's gone. I haven't even seen your answering question segment from FNF. Change isn't always good especially when trying to get one's boxing fix.
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
I can't disagree with you. I have tried to get used to the new format and I just don't like it. Too many things are lost in the shuffle. I couldn't even find the darn link to my own chat.
Joel (NY)
Dan, can Arlovski be brought into mainstream quickly cause of his already existent training or he'll have to start like everyone else?
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
I guess Golden Boy will check him out in his debut and go from there. Let's just say I am a little skeptical.
Angel, Carson CIty
Dan, did you see the WBA's weak justification for allowing interim title fights - when there are economic benefits to the fighters. They mean when they can collect a fat sanctioning fee! The WBA is a joke!
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
The WBA disgusts me.
Darin (Savoy,IL)
Dan of Thunder, do you get the sense Oscar is actively looking for his next opponent, or are all the rumors (Tito, JCC Jr.) just coming from other promoters and fighters?
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Oscar is just chilling out. His birthday was this week (36) and he's been in Puerto Rico with his family not really thinking boxing, from what I am told. I think he's just trying to figure out what he wants to do. There's no rush. He should take whatever time he needs to make the decision that is right for him.
JJD (Seattle)
Are you getting a lot of Arlovski questions? Seems silly to hype a guy who has never boxed that I know of and also ended his last night sleepytime on his face.
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
I am. And I agree.
timothy (pinole,ca)
if barrera exposes amir khan's chin the same way prescott did, do you think his career or chances of winning a world title is gone?
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
It would be awfully hard for Khan to rebound from a loss to Barrera after the way he also lost to Prescott. Sure, Khan could keep fighting, but who would take him seriously?
Brian (DC)
Let's say Pac-Hatton lands on HBO PPV and HBO puts in a full marketing effort (24/7 episodes, etc.), what's your over-under on PPV buys? 500-600K?
Dan Rafael (1:20 PM)
I think 600,000-plus is very likely.
Frank(Phx)
I can feel the hatred you have towards the WBA. Lol I think they disgust all us freaks!
Randy Orton
Do you need me to kick the people at the WBA in the head?
Max from PA
Hey Dan. Have you heard anything about how Pavlik's training is going for his fight against Rubio? I heard his camp before his Hopkins fight was lazy so I wanted to see if he changed anything since his loss.
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
When I spoke to Kelly and Jack Loew a couple of weeks ago, just after they had started training, they sounded in good spirits and excited to be back in the gym. Since then, I am not sure what has been going on. I don't know why you say the camp was lazy. I doubt that. The one change Jack said he made was that he wanted a more private camp with less distractions from fans and media coming to the gym.
Tom (Danbury,CT)
How many people are actually going to buy the Chagaev PPV? 10? 20?
Dan Rafael (1:22 PM)
More than 20.
Will ( Springdale, Ar)
Will Manny stay at 140 or will he go back to 135?
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
Manny has said he is done at 135. He is at 140 or 147 for the right fight.
Jim (Tacoma, WA)
Only 21 days till Adamek-Banks! Can't wait to see if Banks has the goods. Can't agree with you more that what a blessing it was for fight fans when B.J. Flores turned down the fight.
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
I'm not as excited as you are, but it's a good fight and certainly better than Adamek-Flores.
Harold (Austin, TX)
Dan, Any word on Vernon Forrest?
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
Nothing at the moment, although he would owe the winner of Martinez-Cintron a mandatory fight.
Joel (NY)
Dan, we've got alot of boxing on our plate for the first half of 2009, it's very exciting that we have so much to choose from!
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
It does look like a very solid first half of the year.
Geoff (NYC)
DTM, all this talk about Judah but no mention of Malignaggi. Any chance that fight will still happen?
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
That's just one of the many potential bouts. So settle down.
Jose NY
Dan, do you think Tito Trindad a Hall of Famer?
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
Of course.
Rick (NY, NY)
DTM, since Mosley owns 5% of Golden Boy, does he make 5% of all of GB's profits, regardless of the event?
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
What am I, his accountant?
Patrick Pittsburgh, PA
Hey Dan, What would be the problem with making Peter vs. Arreola? Money? Or just not enough interest?
Dan Rafael (1:28 PM)
I think it could be made, at least on the Peter side. And I am quite certain HBO would accept the fight. But I do not think the Arreola side is interested in that kind of gamble.
Eric (Fayetteville, AR)
Dan, haven't seen much of Froch. What kind of fighter is he and do you have him favored over Taylor?
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Froch is a good fighter and generally makes good fights. I have seen most of his pro bouts. I would favor Taylor against him, but it's a competitive fight I think. Froch has solid power and a great chin -- never been down pro or amateur.
Eric (LA, CA)
Hey Dan, Does a fighter have to split his purse between his trainer, cutman, etc.?
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
Are you serious with that question? Do you think those other guys work for free?
Scott (NYC)
Ring magazine thinks B-Hop should drop a couple of pounds and campaign at 168. Do you like that idea?
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
If that is something BHop is interested in, great. I think the bigger challenge would be for him to go to cruiserweight.
Brian (DC)
Speaking of Arce... is Arce-Hussein one of the best PPV undercard fights of the decade? I'm having a tough time thinking of a better one off the top of my head.
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
I'm sure there are others, but that was a fabulous ppv undercard fight.
rob (jersey)
DTM - please forgive the tardiness...will you join me in praying that VIC calls out King Kong tomorrow night?
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
If Vic wins, that's the fight I want to see -- Agbeko vs. Darchinyan at bantamweight.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, is there one fight at 175 that would give us a true champ or do we need a mini-tournament to find the champ since Joe C retired?
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
I think a match between Dawson and Hopkins would pretty settle any debate as to who is the man in the wake of Joe's retirement.
Scott (NYC)
DTM, random question, how are seats in section L1 at the Grand Garden in Vegas? Going for the Hatton Pac fight.
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
Dude do you think I have the seating plan at MGM memorized or something? Go on Ticketmaster and look for yourself.
Matt (San Diego)
Dan, I just bet Maidana at +175, got to listen to Jorge from East LA when it comes to fighters from Argentina. What can you tell me about Maidana?
Dan Rafael (1:34 PM)
Jorge does have a pretty good track record with picking fighters from Argentina in upsets.
Kyle (New Paltz, NY)
Hey Dan, do you think Wladimir Klitschko, if he beats haye will be called the best heavyweight in the world today?
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
He already is. Beating Haye would just add to it.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Does Calzaghe get dropped from your Feb. P4P rankings?
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
Yes.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
How can a fighter not submit a mandatory 30 day prefight weight in and not be replaced then?
Dan Rafael (1:36 PM)
The weight check is somethng the WBC wants. But it does not mean the fight can't go forward. The WBC would just not sanction it perhaps. But, of course, the WBC would have sanctioned it because then it gets its grubby hands on money.
All Freaks
Dude, "do you think I have a seating plan at the MGM memorized" Another classing from DTM!
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
For the record, I do not memorize the seating plan for Mandalay Bay, Staples Center, Boardwalk Hall, Madison Square Garden (the main arena or the Theater) or any other boxing venue.
Adam (Ft. Lauderdale)
Dan, I apologize, I'm new to the chats. What other fighter from Argentina did Jorge pick?
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
He was the only Freak to outright pick Baldomir over Judah. I mocked him. I was humbled. Jorge is now a Freak Hall of Famer.
British Drunks
THERE'S ONLY ONE RICKY HATTON!!!!
Dan Rafael (1:38 PM)
No kidding.
Ed (Crosby, TX)
Dan-O, Has amyone ever come from another fighting background into boxing i.e., kickboxing, MMA and so forth and become a champion or at least a solid fighter? I know Haugen was in the toughman comps.
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
Several fighters from Thailand have come to boxing and been good after doing Muy Thai.
bruce torrance,ca
Seems to me J. Julio has better defense and more experience over kirkland. but what about his chin? has he ever been knocked down or hurt badly?
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child (again). Yes, Julio does have a bit better defense than Kirkland, although neither have great defense. Julio was knocked down by Cosme Rivera late, but I think that is the only time he's been down.
Rick, Marina, Ca
If Guerrero wins on March, do you think we see a Guerrero-Soto fight? That will be good fight.
Dan Rafael (1:42 PM)
It's a fight both sides have told me they are interested in for later this year. So maybe it will happen. I'd love to see it.
Kevin (NYC)
Can't forget Katsidis vs Amonsot as an all time great undercard fight. What's up with Amonsot, didn't he have a head injury of some kind?
Dan Rafael (1:43 PM)
Also a tremendous undercard fight. I was at that one and it was sensational. He suffered a small brain bleed, meaning he will never be licensed again in Nevada. But he is back in the Philippines and fighting again.
Tony (Walden)
Would you consider B-Hop's late career as a come back of sorts, like Foreman's?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Not at all because BHop never took 10 years off. He also fought all the top dogs.
Steve, Sac, Ca
Dano, I will be getting the Top Rank card with Pavlik and Cotto, will I be able to see the Duddy fight?
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
Yes, the Duddy fight will be on the PPV broadcast as will the Anthony Peterson-Edner Cherry bout.
Eric (Southern Cal)
Hey Dan, If the Baby bull and the Galaaxy Warrior win their next fights, do you think it's possible there would be a rematch between them?
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
I think that rematch could eventually happen, sure. But I'm not confident it would be next.
Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)
I liked you better before Golden Boy bought you. But with that said, i think your blog is the best thing going in boxing reading.
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
LOL.
Redford (NYC)
Where does Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs rank in your all time heavyweights?
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
546th.
Duff (Abington, MA)
Why wouldn't the networks be interested in the lightweight tournament? The matches listed sound pretty good and the overall card would definitely attract a lot of fans. And if Casameyor was added to the card it could be a really great night of boxing.
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
I have no idea.
Joel (NY)
Dan, do you think Casamayor at 37 would still beat alot of the top lightweights?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
Yes, I think he could beat a lot of guys.
Rick, Marina, ca
Damn, 546th, hahaha
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
Too high?
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, we know Israel Vasquez is hurt but what's holding up the #2 man in the div. from fighting R. Marquez?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
Good question. Money, right opponent, a TV date.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, Any updates on Tavoris Cloud or is he following the step by step instructions of David Tua's Manual on How To Have A Successful Boxing Career.
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
I wish I knew. He scored a terrific win against Gonzalez on ESPN and has disappeared. It's too bad. I'd like to see him again.
Eric (Fayetteville, AR)
If Shannon's 546th, Ruiz must be 1638th.
Mike Balzack (Richmond)
Dan, want to talk to you about Friday Night Fights. Every few years they get an AWESOME main event. Why is that? Remember when it was Vazquez-Larios and also Castillo-Johnston? Why, Dan, why!!!!!
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
Huh?
Bronson (Las Vegas, NV)
Does Angulo have the same trainer as Margarito? I remember hearing they sparred together...
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
I do not believe so.
Jon (SF)
Dan, you are overrating Briggs by a lot. I have him 891st.
Hector New York NY
DTM what do you think of Jones-Sheika
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
I don't.
Brian (DC)
What's funny is that Briggs was actually the lineal heavyweight champ at one point.
Dan Rafael (1:54 PM)
You're right but only because he got a gift against George Foreman in a fight Foreman got robbed.
Eric R. (Los Angeles, CA)
Speaking of the 122 lb. division, do you think JuanMa has what it takes to challenge the likes of Vazquez and Marquez?
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
Yes. I think he probably would beat either of them head to head at this point. The other guys have had their day. Great fighters, but that trilogy destroyed them.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Dan, hypothetically, if you could make one of these fights happen, which one would you choose? Dawson-Hopkins or Abraham-Pavlik ?
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
Pavlik-Abraham would be my first choice but I'd like to see them both.
Mike NJ
Better fighter...Briggs or Razor Rudduck?
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
Ruddock in his prime would kill Briggs.
Ramone (Miami)
So how do you rank the trilogies between Gatt/Ward vs. Vaz/Marq?
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
Have to give the edge to Vazquez-Marquez. Gatti-Ward was also great but the second fight was not close to the others. In Vazquez-Marquez there was more at stake (the legit 122 title in all three fights) and all three were awesome, with each one being better than the previous.
Miguel Indio CA [via mobile]
Who will Vicente escobedo fight next and when
Dan Rafael (1:59 PM)
Obviously, not Guerrero.
Joel (NY)
Dan, any word on the price of the Jones Jr. Boxing/MMA PPV? Thanks
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
Not set yet but I think you're looking at something like $29.95 or $34.95.
ESPN Webmaster
Dan, where is your latest blog?
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
In my blog box on the main page as well as one of the selections available in the main display.
steve (Tampa)
I got my girlfriend to sit through her first full fight a little ways back, but it was Toney vs Oquendo. I'm thinking I need a mulligan, but I'm not sure which basic cable fight to use. Help?
Dan Rafael (2:01 PM)
Your girlfriend got a bad intro my man. Show her a DVD of a good fight please. Have her watch Darchinyan-Arce this weekend.
Aaron (Hartford)
Is Sergio Mora going to fight this year ?
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
I would assume so, but who knows?
JP (Columbus, OH)
More PPV buys - Chagaev or RJJ
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
RJ.
Luis (PR)
DTM, who do you think would have won between Iron Boy-Ricardo Lopez?
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
I love both guys, but Lopez is one of my top 10 favorite fighters. I would have loved to see that fight. As terrific as Calderon is, I think Lopez would have beaten him.
Bruce: Alexandria
With the Obama administration outlawing torture, does that mean nobody can ever watch John Ruiz fight again?
Dan Rafael (2:03 PM)
Well said.
Sergio Mora
I'm going to fight in Memphis
Brooks (Cleveland)
I was thinking Darchinyan KO7, but since I've been wrong about every big fight lately, I'm thinking I should pull the Costanza, do the opposite, and bet the house on Arce!
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Not a bad idea.
Duff (Abington, MA)
SI is a joke now. There write up about Ingemar Johansson was nothing short of embarrassing. And while Mosley's win over Margarito only got 1 paragraph, they made sure to make room for about 7 paragraphs about Margarito's hand raps.
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
I'm shocked. Hey, I've subscribed to SI for probably about 25 years. But its boxing coverage the past decade is nothing short of pathetic.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
So, a corpse for Gamboa on FNF on 2/20, and then something bigger (hopefully) for that April ShoBox date? Any names in particular out there?
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Maybe Jose Rojas on the ShoBox card.
Yorkis (Philly)
I think I like Arce... after Shane a few weeks back, are you scared to pick against the guy with faster hands?
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
No because I think Arce is a bit shot and I never thought that about Shane.
Luis (PR)
Vic has already compared Arce to Woody from Toy Story, called him as dumb as an ox, said Arce ran around his living room thinking his was a cowboy on a horse, among other stuff. Does he have anything left for the post fight interview if he wins tonight? The guy deserves his own reality tv show.
Dan Rafael (2:09 PM)
Vic is one of the best trash talkers around. He is p4p on the trash talk list.
Jon (DC)
Dan, any word on ticket sales for Arce-Darchinyan?
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
Top Rank says it's expecting a crowd of about 6,000 or 7,000.
Don (AL)
Have you heard anything about Floyd Mayweather's "Filthy Rich Record" label? Is he the real deal in the music biz?
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
As far as I know, it's never put out an album. It's like if someone said they were a boxing writer but never ever wrote an article.
Mike NJ
What was your very first thought after Tyson got DQ'd for biting? Disgusted?
Dan Rafael (2:13 PM)
My first thought was, "OH, SH--!!!" I was working on the desk as a night editor at the paper I used to work for in Binghamton, New York, and I knew it was going to be a mess for us.
Kevin (va beach)
Any idea when Roy Jones - Omar Sheika tickets will go on sale? I've never seen him live and wanna make the trip!
Dan Rafael (2:14 PM)
Spoke to Squre Ring's John Wirt the other day. They're supposed to do a press conference and put tix on sale sometime next week.
chris (stillwater, ok)
If you ever bought one of roy jones albims, you'd thank Floyd for never putting anything out.
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
Roy actually has a couple of songs I like.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Dan who would you favor in Judah-Quintana?
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
Probably Zabdiel.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Isn't Berto-Collazo II and Judah-Quintana a perfect BAD card for, say, May?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
Love it.
Brock (Belleville, IL)
I am a boxing writer and I will get around to that first article sooner or later...
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting. Hope you all enjoy a big weekend of fights and this week's blogs and notebook. Don't forget to drop by tomorrow night for a special RAD chat. Peace.
