Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd
![]() |
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).
Send your questions now and join Keith on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for all the answers.
Buzzmaster (1:02 PM)
We've got Kidder!
Keith Kidd (1:03 PM)
It's great to be back chatting with you all, as we get closer and closer to the start of the combine and the new league year and free agency.
Alex (Athens, OH)
I was wondering what the value for Derek Anderson is on this market. Is he worth a 1st or 2nd round pick?
Keith Kidd (1:05 PM)
In my opinion, no he's not. Even though he had a good year last season, there was a drop off late in the year. When he got a new deal there was some drop off as well. If there is a trade, it could be for a second day pick that could be upgraded with production on the field.
Mike yeager (TRIE)
Where do you see Haynsworth and Lewis going?
Keith Kidd (1:06 PM)
If a deal doesn't get done with Haynesworth prior to the start of free agency, he will go to the highest bidder. As far as Lewis, there are some considerations as far as where he is in his career. But he still brings so much to the table. I think the Jets would be a big players in this along with some other teams.
Coty Everett, LA, CA
Do you think that Kurt and Anquan are done with the Cardinals?
Keith Kidd (1:08 PM)
I don't. I think Warner will be re-signed and I think the Cardinals would be crazy to trade Boldin. You don't trade good players that are under a GOOD contract. And it's a good contract for the Cardinals. The only way I would see Boldin playing elsewhere is for a team to make an offer that they can't refuse.
Rob (Dover, DE)
What moves will the Redskins make in free agency and the draft? How good is Laron Landry?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
I don't think the Redskins will make a lot of moves. I think they've shifted their philosophy. They're trying to get younger. I would see them being in the market, only if it made sense. I think Landry is an outstanding good young player that will only get better and better.
Ryan (San Diego)
What are the odds the Chargers are able to keep both LT and Sproles?
Keith Kidd (1:10 PM)
I think they're very good. They have LT under contract and they can easily designate Sproles as their franchise player. That would be a very smart move. You just don't ask a player to take a paycut in LT's situation. He was injured a lot this past season.
Steven (Providence, R.I.)
Will the Dolphins be a big player in the free agent market? Who do you think they will go after?
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
The Dolphins will continue to stay aggressive. They have to get playmakers at the skill positions on offense. They will continue to build around their OLs and DLs, getting depth and quality. Also, the back end. They have guys that are not under contract for next season. One guy they need to sign is Bell, their free safety.
Keith Kidd (1:12 PM)
Also, go back to Parcells' relationships in Dallas. Chris Canty is a guy he could target.
Charles From Queens, New York
Hey Keith, i feel plaxico is done in New York. Do you think the giants will make a move for boldin? or go receiver with their first pick. and if they do go receiver, how do you feel about Hakeem Nicks being that pick?
Keith Kidd (1:13 PM)
Possibly, Plaxico is done in New York. When they suspended him, I thought the offense wasn't going to suffer. Oh boy did I miss on that one. They really missed him and the attention he gets on defense. This has to be a big fact finding mission in the offseason. The Giants have to bring him back and he has to follow the rules or they just move on.
Keith Kidd (1:14 PM)
They could also try to trade the player. I don't think you just dump him.
Dave (Denver)
Kidder - What is your opinion of Josh McDaniels as the new man in Denver? Add to that his choices on his staff?
Keith Kidd (1:15 PM)
Josh McDaniels is one of the best young coaches in the NFL. He's a special coach. This guy gets it. He gets it from all different aspects of the coaching staff and football operations. He had a great teacher in Bill Belichick. It will be interesting to watch how he implements his system going forward. He's got a darn good defensive coach in Mike nolan.
Mike yeager (TRIE)
Possibility TO gets the boot out of Dallas?
Keith Kidd (1:17 PM)
Mike, your guess is as good as mine pertaining to Dallas. After seeing the Dan Reeves episode, the soap opera gets more interesting. I have no idea. This team has to get fixed somehow and it starts in the lockerroom.
Greg (Boston)
Cassell move before or after the draft? If it's after, are the Pats getting anything that will help this year? 28 mill on 2 QB's seems excessive
Keith Kidd (1:18 PM)
It makes great business sense to franchise him. If you don't have a QB in this league you can't win. They have the best in the league in Tom Brady. They're not just going to let a great player walk out of the building. That's why they used the franchise tag. What another teams gives to get him is another question.
Joe (Houston)
Texans playoff team?
Keith Kidd (1:19 PM)
They have to be. There's a tremendous amount of pressure to get to the playoffs. They're extremely talented. However, the defense has to get fixed this offseason. They've hired a new DC. If they can get the defense fixed, they're right in the AFC South race.
Daniel (Tenn)
KK-Is this the year the Titans final make a big offseason addition and go for a big time reciever? I believe thet was the missing link this past year. Or are they too worried about the quarterback situation and Big Al leaving?
Keith Kidd (1:20 PM)
Daniel, that makes perfect sense. However the biggest moves they can make is re-signing their own players - Haynesworth, Collins, Scaise, Bironas. Four players that they must re-sign before they go and address the WR position.
Peter (Morris, MN)
Do you see Tarvaris Jackson as the starting QB in Minnesota next year?
Keith Kidd (1:22 PM)
I don't see him as being their starting QB. They have to improve on the position this offseason. Can they address it with a guy like Jeff Garcia who's been in that offense. I think this is a key area of need on this team. This team will be the team to beat in the NFC North. This is a talented team. But finding a QB is not an easy job.
Anthony (NYC)
Hey Kidder with Favre giving it up should the Jets continue with their win now attitude, or try and mold the team into coach Ryans kind of team?
Keith Kidd (1:23 PM)
Absolutely. This is the best thing that could happen for Rex Ryan. He can now go into the season in his first year with an unproven QB and not get second guessed. It's great for him to go in and not have this hanging over the team. They can go forward with a QB that doesn't have to win them the game, just execute the gameplan. That defense will be much, much improved. They'll be nasty.
The Wolf (Cleveland, OH)
Are McCown and Griese the real answer in Tampa?
Keith Kidd (1:24 PM)
McCown, maybe. Griese, no. This team still does not have its future franchise QB on the roster.
Dan (Dallas)
Are the Cowboys and Raiders drinking the same bottled water? What is going on with these two teams? It appears even the Lions might finally be moving away from being a train wreck.
Brian (Michigan)
You're the GM of the Lions, what do you do? What do you do with the #1 pick?
Keith Kidd (1:26 PM)
First of all, if you're the GM of the Lions, you're going to be stuck with the No. 1 pick. No one is trading up. QBs separate themselves from the other positions, because of the value on QBs. If you think Stafford is one of the best players in the draft, you take him. If not, then you take the best player on your board.
Keith Kidd (1:27 PM)
With the combine right around the corner, this is where everybody in the league jumps into the evaluation process. This is why players go up and players go down. This is when it gets interesting. The draft is used to build your team. Free agency is used to supplement the team.
Mike (TRIE)
Brian- If you are the CM of lions you should just be ashamed and quit.
Matt (Mesa, AZ)
What three thing would you do improve the Card D this off season? What do you think of Pitts LB coach as a Def. Cord.
Keith Kidd (1:30 PM)
No. 1 I wouldn't have fired Clancy Pendergast. No. 2, I'd re-sign Karlos Dansby or franchise him. He can not leave. No. 3, I would try to find another corner to play opposite Rodgers-Cromartie.
Jose
Keith, If you had a vote for the Hall of Fame, would you vote Kurt Warner in or out?
Keith Kidd (1:31 PM)
I'd vote him in.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Are the Redskins going to cut Jason Taylor? If so, does he sign with the Pats?
Keith Kidd (1:32 PM)
I don't see them cutting him right now. They gave up too much to get the player. However, he needs to go through an intense offseason, which he missed last year. And then a decision can be made in training camp. The risk is that you risk injury to the player. As for the Pats, they don't hesistate to sign older players who have a great history of production - Junior Seau, Rodney Harrison. That could be a great landing spot.
Wayne (Naples, FL)
Any chance the Steelers make an uncharacteristic splash in free agency to shore up their offensive line? I don't know if they would be able to draft the right personnel with the last pick.
Keith Kidd (1:33 PM)
No. History has shown they don't take a lot of high risk chances in free agency. This is an organization that has a plan and sticks to it.
Josh (MAdisonville)
What do the Bills need to get over the 7-9 hump, and back into the playoffs?
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
The Bills have to get a better identity on offense of who they want to be. Defensively, they need to get a healthy Schobel back and address the CB position.
Keith Kidd (1:35 PM)
This team, year in, year out, has the best special teams in the NFL. They just have to tweak the offense and defense.
Randy (gilbert, AZ)
do you really think Warner is the long term fix for the Cards? With all of the Talent that will be available at QB next year in the draft I think we should let Leinart start without an MVP caliber QB waiting on the sideline to steal his job.
Keith Kidd (1:36 PM)
No, he's a quick fix right now. The long term fix is Matt Leinart. But he can't get on the field right now.
Steve (Miami)
Is it possible for the Ravens to resign all 3 FA linebackers (Suggs, Lewis, Scott)? And where will that leave that cap wise. Would they have enough space to go after a solid WR?
Keith Kidd (1:37 PM)
No. I look for the Ravens to franchise Suggs and try to get a deal in place with Lewis before free agency. Bart Scott will play elsewhere. Compared to the other 31 teams, the Ravens have the best free agents available right now. They have some guys that can help some teams. Jason Brown is another guy.
Paulie (Slippery Rock, PA)
Demarcus Ware or James Harrison?
Keith Kidd (1:38 PM)
Ooh, great question. James Harrison. He was defensive player of the year.
Mark (Orlando)
What do the Colts do? Cut Harrsion? Go after a DT free agent?
Keith Kidd (1:39 PM)
I do think they will eventually terminate Marvin Harrison. I think they will try to address a WR this offseason, along with the interior of their defense.
Gray (Chicago)
How do you foresee the Bears filling their gaping hole at WR?
Keith Kidd (1:40 PM)
I think the Bears first need to address the OL and DL before they move to the WR position. But I think it's an area they will address this offseason. It won't matter who's playing on the line if the QB can't get it out of his hand.
larry (oregon)
where do the packers start in improving their defence?
Keith Kidd (1:41 PM)
It has to be nose tackle. You'll have to build it inside out. The things I can't wait to see is can both AJ Hawk and Nick Barnett hold up as those inside 'backers in the 3-4 system. I think the most critical part of this offseason is how Dom Capers evaluates his personnel moving forward. If you're a Packer fan, you have to be excited about Capers.
Jimbo (Brooklyn)
Is Gholston really "fixable"? Or was that pick just completely terrible?
Keith Kidd (1:42 PM)
If Rex Ryan can't get Vernon Gholston playing to the level that we all expect, then yes he's probably headed toward being a bust. Right now, when watching him on tape, he's a better athlete then football player right now. He has to learn. He has to adapt those physical skills to the football field.
Matt (Buffalo)
Would you agree that the Bills biggest problem on O is their lack of a 2nd receiver or TE to free Evans from double teams?
Keith Kidd (1:43 PM)
No, because that's why they went out and drafted James Hardy in the second round last year. You have to keep in mind one of the hardest positions to play in the NFL as a rookie is WR. But this team doesn't have a quality, front line starting TE.
Scott (Dallas)
Have to go with Ware. Out performed Harrison accross the board.
Brian (Michigan)
Why does everyone think the Ravens should even ATTEMPT to re-sign Ray Lewis? How smart is it to pay an old guy with injury problems huge money? I FEEL LIKE IM TAKING CRAZY PILLS!
Ben (Estero, FL)
The Steelers need to address their offensive line in the offseason. Four guys from the OL are free agents: Max Starks, Marvel Smith, Trai Essex, and Chris Kemoeatu. Who do you resign and who do you let walk?
Keith Kidd (1:45 PM)
there were times this year when I watched them and thought they could all walk. My guess is that both Starks and Smith walk and you try to re-sign Essex and Kemo IF the value's right. But you can't let them all walk.
Craig (Norwich, CT)
If the Colts were to release Marvin Harrison, where would he end up?
Keith Kidd (1:47 PM)
A lot will come down to the money. In the NFL, whoever pays the most gets the player. But will he want to play for a lot less in Indy or go get himself another championship? Then you're looking at places like New England, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, etc. There will be a market for him.
John (Fort Myers, FL)
To Scott in Dallas: Ware had a great season, and I probably would have taken him before the playoffs. But he didn't return an interception 100 yards in the Super Bowl.
Yatin (LA)
Even if Zona is willing to trade Boldin, is he worth multiple picks, including 1 1st rounder? As an Eagles fan, I'd MUCH rather go after Housh than Boldin and keep the picks.
Keith Kidd (1:48 PM)
Boldin is under contract for two more years and he's a good player. So you've got a good player under a doable contract in Arizona, so yeah, it's going to take multiple picks to get him out of there.
Jason (Tampa)
Nnamdi Asomugha, Do the raiders franchise him or is he a potential free agent for everyone? IF FA, where is he likely to go?
Keith Kidd (1:49 PM)
Yes. Unfortunately for him, he's going to be a Raider this year. He's such a great player but you don't know much about him because he plays in Oakland.
Joe (Elkhart Lake ,WI)
To Scoot in Dallas, i bet you think Romo is the best QB too
Craig (Norwich, CT)
Harrison playing alongside Moss and Welker intrigues me as a Pats fan.
Xander (Philly)
The Bills have a lot of money to spend. Why is no one talking about them as big players in free agency?
Keith Kidd (1:51 PM)
Well, I don't know if no ones talking about them. They have been big players in free agency. They've been pretty active in what they've done the past few years. This was a team that was 5-1 last year before things got unraveled. I don't think they have to go out and blow people away on the open market. They have to make some decisions that make sense while continuing to build through the draft.
Ryan (San Diego)
Why are people forgetting about Merriman? Before he got injured he was the best outside rusher in the NFL...and he's already back in the weight room. Watch out for him this year under Ron Rivera
Jake (Raleigh, NC)
Should the Jets just stick with Clemens and their other quarterbacks this year, and wait until next offseason to draft or sign a new number one quarterback? Since not many good free agents will be on the market at the postion, and the best quarterbacks will be taken before they pcik in this years draft. Should they wait till next year for Bradford, McCoy and others?
Keith Kidd (1:52 PM)
I don't think they stick with Clemens. I think it will be an open competition throughout the offseason. You'll see a system in New York that's heavily built around the running game. They'll need a QB to play within in the system. There's a reason this team carried four QBs last year, so they feel good about the young guys.
Taylor ((Mobile,Al))
keith, what do the saints have to do defensively to get over the hump
Keith Kidd (1:53 PM)
They've got to get a more physical mentality. They need to be more aggressive. This team has two legit pass rushers, so they have to get better at LB and on the back end. That's where they have to get better defensively.
Alan (Indy)
Aaron Kampman playing OLB seems to me like a disaster waiting to happen, could the Packers get second and fourth round pick in a trade?
Keith Kidd (1:55 PM)
I disagree with you. He's a good football player. He has to learn to play from a two-point stance and be a factor in the run game as far as setting the edge.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
This is it with McNabb and Reid, right? They have to make a final or finally make a push for the Super Bowl this year?
Keith Kidd (1:56 PM)
Absolutely. I wouldn't say it's the final for both, but I would say each year is a totally different year. The NFL, what taught us this past year, if you don't win, you don't stick around.
Keith Kidd (1:57 PM)
How many NFC championship games has Andy Reid coached in? You don't think teams like the Browns, Chiefs, Jets, Lions would kill for this head coach? If he's let go, there will be a lot of teams asking about him. And there'd be even more teams asking for Donovan McNabb.
Rob (Green Bay)
Alan is slow in the head if he thinks the Packers would trade a top defensive player like Kampman for a 2nd rounder.
Ben (San Fran)
If you were in charge of the 49ers, who would you target in free agency and the draft to help this team?
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
Let's do it positionally. First of all, in free agency you don't know what's going to happen. Same thing in the draft. But positions, RT, QB, CB, FS, WR, OLB. Those are the ones to start.
Keith Kidd (1:59 PM)
Thanks for the questions. It's always fun talking ball with the Nation.
