Matt will be here soon!
Matthew Barnaby (3:38 PM)
Hi everyone. Playoffs are right around the corner. Pretenders or contenders. Let's get started!
Matt Lownes East Hampton New York
What are the chances the Sharks play the Bruins in the Stanly Cup?
Matthew Barnaby (3:39 PM)
I think that is a very good analysis. Right now, they are the two best teams playing hockey. SJ will have to knock off detroit, which is a tough task, but Boston is by far the best team in the East.
I love the idea of LA trading for Kovalchuk. Is that a good idea for either side?
Matthew Barnaby (3:40 PM)
Kovalchuck is defintiely one of the premier scorers in the game. I do no think Atlanta will trade him this year as they need to put some people in the stands. LA is a team of the future, but next year we will talk about him getting traded.
What does Montreal end up doing to fix the major problems they're having right now?
Matthew Barnaby (3:42 PM)
Montreal has a lot of issues. from goaltending to power play. For starters they need to show desperation. They are on a long roadtrip and could fall fast as they have only won two of their last nine. Look for them to make a trade for a centermen and a defensemen at the deadline.
Carlie ((North Tonawanda, New York))
Do you think the Penguins will make the playoffs with Gonchar coming back and all?
Matthew Barnaby (3:43 PM)
It was a huge win for the Pens last night against San Jose. They need Goinchar in the lineup to help the power play. I see them making the playoffs, but I do not expect the same as last year.
Why do the Rangers want the controversial Avery?
Matthew Barnaby (3:44 PM)
The Rangers need something. The Power play is terrible and they have a lot of underachieving stars in the lineup. They screwed up giving big contracts to guys who did not deserve them. Why not make another mistake?
Do you think the Blue Jackets will be able to make the postseason? And do you think Steve Mason will win ROY?
Matthew Barnaby (3:45 PM)
It has been a good story. But I think this is where playoff teams seperate themselves. Mason has been the best rookie and will be a star for the future. I just do not think Columbus has what it takes to make the playoffs.
There is a lot of talk around here about whitney for martin st. louis w/other players in the package? What do you think if that happens?
Matthew Barnaby (3:47 PM)
Tampa has had about 300 different players in their lineup. If they trade Martin St. Louis for Ryan Whitney, straight up, this is a steal for Pittsburgh. St. Louis is one of the hardest working players I have ever played with. There would have to be more players involved.
I pay more attention to the AHL..hence the Hershey Bears than the NHL...why has this league been such a joke with the money going out, and nothing coming in....I mean..what channel can you watch hockey on.
Matthew Barnaby (3:48 PM)
The AHL is a great league, but it's not NHL. ESPN hopefully will get hockey back where it belongs. Hopefully the braintrust in the NHL realizes that becasue a lot of people are missing out on some great action
Who do you think is going to win the stanley cup this year
Matthew Barnaby (3:48 PM)
I will stay with my original pick, the Detroit Red Wings. The goaltending has to be better though.
Riley Grant (Colorado)
Hello Matt! What do you think the Avalanche need to do in order to become a powerhouse again?
Matthew Barnaby (3:50 PM)
First and foremost they need a reliable goaltender. Budaj and Raycroft are no Patrick Roy. They also need to stay healthy, which are not right now.
Danny (Great Mills, Maryland)
Goaltending seems to be the Capitals biggest concern from national media but as a local fan, i say its our Defense that is the problem leading people to believe its a goaltending problem. Defense or Goaltending?
Matthew Barnaby (3:51 PM)
I think it is a little bit of both. They are so good offensively that if they battled a little harder defensively I think they are right there with Boston. Goaltending has been better as of late. But I believe it is defensive breakdowns that gets them in trouble.
Danny (Great Mills, Maryland)
Ovechkin faced the MVP/make the playoffs question last year. Do you see Malkin still getting MVP consideration if the Pens miss the playoffs? or Crosby?
Matthew Barnaby (3:52 PM)
I think the top scorer has to merit consideration, But there is no question in my mind, there is only one MVP. And that is Ovechkin.
hi, why arent there more canadian teams in the nhl because there they seem to always sellout, and which is the next to team to move, and where?
Matthew Barnaby (3:54 PM)
Winnepeg would love to get a team back. Hockey in Canada is like football in the States. It is just part of their culture. I still think with the Canadian dollar, it is tough for some of the small markets to succeed. The next team to move could be the Phoenix Coyotes.
Matthew Barnaby (3:55 PM)
Sorry folks, have to cut it a little short today. Thanks for the questions. See you next week!
