Dan Rafael (12:00 PM)
Greetings, Fight Freaks. Big fight weekend is upon us with an excellent tripleheader tomorrow night on HBO and lots of other fights coming up. So we have plenty to discuss. Make sure you check out today's massive notebook. Also -- there will be a late-night RAD chat tomorrow night after the HBO show. Let's get to it.
Garth (CT)
Hey Dan, It's unfortunate about Margartio but now alot of his victories will be questioned especially those beatdowns of Cintron and Cotto.
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
You're right. His wins are tainted just like all those home runs Bonds and McGwire and A-Roid hit.
JP (Columbus, OH)
Bob Arum needs to cut the disingenuous act regarding Margarito's hand wraps. I get that he's sticking up for his fighter, but NOBODY is buying it. To call the suspension a travesty is just stupid.
Dan Rafael (12:02 PM)
Arum's rants about it are a joke. Nobody buys his holier than thou attitude.
Kevin (Chicago, IL)
If Cintron were to win on Saturday, who would be possible opponents for the summer? I don't know what to make of him, especially since a reasonable person could put an asterisk next to his two losses.
Dan Rafael (12:03 PM)
If he wins, he would have an interim belt and he would be mandatory for Vernon Forrest, so perhaps that bout could happen.
Brian (Brooklyn)
Why haven't you put out an editorial about the Margarito findings? This is a very serious charge that I was looking for your take. You seem to be pretty hush about it other than the TV interview.
Dan Rafael (12:04 PM)
I did something like seven TV interviews and multiple radio interviews and was very clear about my opinion. I am disgusted. And I've been a little busy writing your massive notebook. I'll blog about my thoughts on Margarito at some point, so relax.
Jeff (Pittsburgh, PA)
Dan, do you think Margarito will fight in Mexico in the next year? I can't imagine that any fighter is actually dumb enough to go fight in a town where they are encouraging a guy who got caught cheating to come fight.
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
Arum says he will. One thing is for sure -- if he does fight if he goes back to California in a year to ask for his license back, the commission will look very poorly upon him for going around the revocation and fighting outside the US. What Margarito needs to do is take his medicine like a man, sit the year, show remorse and come clean and then maybe he'll get his license back.
Steve(NY)
Props to Cotto for taking the high road. I know he gave his opinion about thinking Marg should be suspended everywhere(which I agree with) but he also didn't make excuses about his loss. Dude is a class act.
Dan Rafael (12:06 PM)
I agree.
Marc (Newton, MA)
Is there any backlash on the supposed officials who sign off on the hand wrap, i think they are as much to blame as anybody in that situation. If there is strict handwrap checking policy it eliminates any form of handwrap cheating period.
Dan Rafael (12:07 PM)
I agree. I had asked that question many times. Obviously, the inspector responsible for supervising the wraps did not do his job properly and should be held accountable for an abject failure.
Eric (Omaha, NE)
Great piece on Campbell. I love reading stories like these compared to the recent ones with Magarito and Mayorga. Have a prediction for Campbells' fight Saturday night?
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
Thanks. Nate is a pretty class guy and brutally honest. I think gets the job done Saturday but I don't think it's going to be all that easy.
Margarito's Former Fans
We're looking for a new fighter. Thankfully we may find the perfect substitution in either Angulo or Martinez (even though he's Argentenian...he's very exciting)
Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)
Dan, shouldn't Arum be worried that if Marga-cheato fights in Mexico the Cali commision will not reinstate him after only one year?
Dan Rafael (12:08 PM)
100%.
Nick (Chicago)
In your professional opinion is it really possible for a fighter not to know if the wrap on his hands feels different than it should or normally does?
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
I have a hard time believing a fighter does not know exactly what is on his hands. Do you think a football player doesn't know about his helmet or a baseball player doesn't know about his glove? Margarito must think we are all stupid.
Sebastian Lujan's Ear
I knew something was up with those gloves.
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Classic.
Lou (MD)
Can anyone question Cotto's chin now after seeing him getting hammered with plaster for 11 rounds?
Rick, Marina, Ca
Whats up Dan, Im so dissappointed in Margarito, but oh well Angulo time to shine is now.
Nick(KY)
In your heart of hearts, putting "oh there's not any evidence" aside...do you think Marg had the loaded gloves against Cotto?
Dan Rafael (12:09 PM)
Yes.
Joel (NY)
I noticed Eric Morel is no longer involved in fighting Montiel, what happened?
Dan Rafael (12:10 PM)
From what I am told, Morel, who spent time in prison recently, has some sort of visa issue that won't allow him to get into another country to fight. So Montiel is going to fight for the interim title and then supposedly if he wins, will face Morel next in the US.
Zach MPLS
Dan, What happened to the Luevano-Concepcion fight on the undercard of Pac-Hatton? That looked like a really good fight
Dan Rafael (12:11 PM)
It's still on. The reason Luevano's opponent is listed as TBA is because the fight is not done yet. But Luevano's manager, Cameron Dunkin, told me this week they are fine with the fight and that is likely what will happen on May 2.
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
Man, I looked back on the tape of that Cotto-Margarito fight. Cotto was outclassing him, it just looked like Margarito was hitting him with sledgehammer hands, and thats what did him in. I would be totally shocked to learn he fought without any help in those gloves. But its all speculation obviously...which is the worst part about it.
Jon (DC)
Dan, with all due respect, I think it is entirely possible that fighters don't know what is going on when their hands are being wrapped and don't pay attention. Mosley has said as much. There are also many times where fighters are doing interviews as their hands are being wrapped.
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
Even if that is the case, which I do not believe it is, then the trainer is fully responsible.
Ben (San Juan, PR)
Now that Margarito Cotto II will not be happening in June, what other fighter should face Cotto on that date? (assuming Cotto gets past Jennings)
Dan Rafael (12:12 PM)
I'd be happy to see a Mosley rematch or a Berto fight.
Donald (New Orleans)
I find Margarito's trainer's excuse unacceptable. It's similar to what Sammy Sosa came up with when he was busted corked bat that he allegedly used for batting practice only. AT NO TIME SHOULD A TRAINER HAVE PLASTER IN HIS SUPPLIES. Your thoughts? Keep up the good work.
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
I agree.
Jeremy (Rio Rancho, NM)
Mosley wants Cotto, but not in New York. What are the chances, 1 the fight happens, and 2 that it's a West coast fight?
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM)
Right now, Cotto has to win next week. Then the sides can begin to hash things out.
Jon (SF)
Dan, how does the wife let you have a RAD on Valentine's Day?
Dan Rafael (12:14 PM)
Because she's a great wife. Besides, we celebrate the next day, which is the anniversary of when we started dating and when we got engaged.
Mark (Ottawa, Canada)
The proposed Alvarado - Alexander fight looks amazing. What are the chances it actually gets made?
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
I am skeptical but would love to see it. Very interesting fight between two good young guys with totally different styles.
Mike (Austin, TX)
Dan, I watched the Maidana vs Kotelnik fight, curious on what your scorecard read? I had Maidana up by a pt.
Dan Rafael (12:15 PM)
I thought Kotelnik eked it out but then again, I didn't see the first two rounds because of the fighting starting before the PPV came on the air.
Danny (Queens, NY)
I totally disagree with a fighter being so ignorant not to know his hands (in which case are your moneymakers) are for some reason a bit heavier than what they were in every other fight of their career. Fighters know their bodies especially their hands.
Charles (Philly)
Even if the fighter doesn't know what the trainer is doing, the fighter should still be liable; after all, the fighter is paying (i.e., employing) the trainer. Employers are liable for their employees' conduct.
Nick (Harrisburg, PA)
Call me vindictive. But I would love to see Cotto go down to Mexico and beat Margarito all over the ring to teach him a lesson. That would be a breath of fresh air.
JP (Columbus, OH)
Even if a fighter is doing interviews during his hand wrap, how many trainers would be stupid enough to load up their hands without prior consent? Margs knew what was up. Period. Plain and simple.
tim, denver
chatting today from my kids school on my windows phone. danno e manno. thanks for the great notebook and the alvarado update. no alvarado questions this week!
Dan Rafael (12:17 PM)
Good because I gave you Alvardo info in the notebook! Top Rank told me yesterday that he will likely be on the April 25 undercard whether he fights Alexander or somebody else.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Any word on the order HBO is showing the fights tomorrow night?
Dan Rafael (12:18 PM)
My understanding is that Angulo-Rivera opens the show, followed by Martinez-Cintron with Campbell-Funeka as the main event.
corey(SC)
Dan for anyone to really think or believe that margarito didnt know that his hands were being wrap with somthing other then what was suppose to be wrap with is like believing A-ROID when he said he didn't know what he was taking durning the LOOSEY-GOOSEY era of baseball. Man be for real. Same goes for Shane also. No one is drinking from a bottle and not know what in the bottle
Mike (New York)
The whole Margarito debacle is far worse than steroids in baseball. There is very little evidence that steroids actually improves baseball performance, but more importantly using it did not endanger their opponents lives!
Dan Rafael (12:19 PM)
If you don't think steroids improved the stats you're a damn fool. Go look at the HR totals during the steroid era. There's a reason Sosa hit more than 60 all those seasons and Bonds pounded 73 and McGwire hit 70 and ARoid's totals were up dramatically. You're a damn fool.
Slick, Philly
Dan, Do you think a Manny victory over Hatton will be the only way to get Floyd to fight again? I don't see him coming back to fight Hatton again when he already beat him.
Dan Rafael (12:20 PM)
I do not think Floyd would come back to face Hatton either. Pacquiao might be a different story. That is such an enormous fight.
Joel (NY)
Dan, how many tickets sold so far for the MSG portion of the top rank ppv next saturday?
Dan Rafael (12:21 PM)
Not sure what is sold but Arum said to the media yesterday he expected a crowd of about 12,000, which sounds about right. I would guess maybe a few less.
Jason (Saratoga Springs, NY)
Dan-the-man, I'm heading to The Parting Glass to watch the ESPN fights tonight. Have you ever been there? What's your favorite bar/restaurant back in 'toga?
Dan Rafael (12:22 PM)
Wow. When I worked at the Saratogian (across the street from the Partine Glass) I spent many a night in there after work with my co-workers after we closed the paper. Good times.
Brian (DC)
I think Mosley hasn't criticized Margarito too harshly because he knows first-hand what it's like to be accused of cheating...
Dan Rafael (12:23 PM)
I have thought that as well.
Carlo (mingo)
What's next for Pavlik, assuming he gets past Rubio?
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
Really it's wide open. Arum talked about the difficulties economically of making fights with Abraham or Sturm, which there is some truth to. He mentioned somebody like Duddy, which may attract some fans and make a few bucks but is an epic mismatch.
Mike (New York)
I love your work on Boxing, but you are out of your element on Baseball. Go talk to your co-worker Keith Law about steroids in Baseball.
Dan Rafael (12:24 PM)
Genius, before I covered boxing, I spent years covering baseball.
Patrick (Pittsburgh, PA)
Hey Dan, With the announcement of Sam Peter fighting Eddie Chambers on FNF, he's clearly not going to fight Cris Arreola any time soon. Are there any names being talked about as a legitimate opponent?
Dan Rafael (12:26 PM)
Arreola's opponent is up in the air. HBO and Goossen are talking opponents over. Goossen tried to get them to take Rahman, which didn't go very far, which is no surprise considering how badly Rahman got smashed by Klitschko and how bad he has looked in recent fights. I really don't know who Arreola will fight, although I was told today by Wladimir Klitschko's adviser that they are having huge problems with the Haye fight and that Arreola may still be an option for Wladimir to fight.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
I think had Tony just came out apologized and said I accept whatever punishment I get, then in a year I think people would have forgave him. BUT when add his trainers lame excuse, PLUS Arum's stupid comments I truly never want to see "that guy got his ass kicked by Mosley" again
Dan (Nutley, NJ)
Do you think they should overturn the Cotto/Margs fight, and make it a no-contest? Apparently you and every freak (except me) has ruled that Margarito had his hands wrapped in plaster for that fight.
Dan Rafael (12:28 PM)
Regardless of what we think, unless there is evidence of some wrongdoing you can't overturn that result or any other result. It will always be tainted though because of what people think happened.
Kyle (Indianapolis)
Is HBO distributing the Pavlik and Cotto fights next week or just producing, like the Casa-JMM fight?
Dan Rafael (12:29 PM)
HBO has nothing to do with the Cotto/Pavlik show. And to be clear, HBO distrubuted the JMM-Casamayor fight but did not produce it.
Aziz (Newcastle,UK)
Are the arguments about Haye and Wlad major? I hope not, as it should be explosive
Dan Rafael (12:32 PM)
Yes, they are major. Hopefully, the issues will be resolved. I may blog about it later.
Pribs: Bethlehem, PA
I gave Margarito the benefit of the doubt, and I've never had my hands wrapped. However, if I put a dollar in my sock, I know it's there!
Joel (NY)
Dan, HBO is distributing, but not producing the April 4th PPV, correct?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
Correct.
Panama Lewis
I truly believe Margarito's trainer made an innocent mistake!
turk (DC)
Any thoughts on Gus Johnson's constant shouting that will be invading our boxing broadcasts?
Dan Rafael (12:33 PM)
I did have to turn down the volume a little bit, but you can't argue with his enthusiasm.
Edward ( Edmonton, Alberta )
Any chance that Toney - Hopkins could happen?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Extremely unlikey considering the huge disparity in weight. Plus, I don't really see the public buying that one.
Sean Dunmore PA
Who do you got at No Way Out HBK or JBL?
Dan Rafael (12:35 PM)
Definitely HBK.
Andrew (Indy, IN)
"Funeka said he knows me like the back of his hand. Now he gets to meet the front of my hand on Saturday night." That's hilarious! Nate's pimp hand grows strong!
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
That was a tremendous quote. Nate can talk up a storm and usually back it up.
Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)
Dan, your thoughts please on Jose Sulamain's comments on Margarito's ban?
Dan Rafael (12:36 PM)
Typical and something for which I have zero respect for.
Charles (Philly)
Seeing Wayne McCullough AND Antwun Echols on the same card will make for a pretty depressing Saint Paddy's Day.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan,Your predictions on tomorrow night's triple threat card?
Dan Rafael (12:37 PM)
I like Campbell, Martinez and Angulo. In other words I like all the favorites, but I do think we'll have an entertaining show.
Big Show
I believe PBF had loaded hands for our fight!! I want a rematch!
Joel (NY)
Dan, great to see Casamayor added to the Lightweight Lightning, any idea how the brackets will break down after theres a winner from each fight?
Dan Rafael (12:38 PM)
Depends on who wins. If Valero wins, it's unlikely he will remain in the tournament.
Mike (Chicago)
Will there be a 2nd fight on the holt-bradley show?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
Yes. Showtime, Top Rank and Gary Shaw are trying to work it out. It MIGHT be Lamont Peterson vs. Willy Blain for an interim 140 title.
jack, fort collins
is andy lee still trained by emmanuel steward?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
Yes.
Mike (Philadelphia)
Dan, how interested are you to see Paul Williams face a still very game Winky Wright as a middleweight?
Dan Rafael (12:39 PM)
I am interested in the fight. I think it's a test for Paul and I think the fight will be better than some thing it will be.
Biff (Philly)
Dan- any word on Rafael Marquez's potential opponents? Think it will be anyone of note, or just a tomato can.
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
It won't be anyone too serious. Are you available?
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Can you confirm that HBO will be televising the John/Juarez fight on the Marquez/Diaz card?
Dan Rafael (12:40 PM)
Yes, HBO will show both JMM-Diaz and John-Marquez on Feb. 28.
brian (nj)
who are the top two welterweights today? your opinion
Dan Rafael (12:41 PM)
Maybe you ought to look at the ESPN.com rankings, which I update every Monday.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Can you elaborate more on why if Valero wins he won't stay in the tournament please.
Dan Rafael (12:42 PM)
Because he is with Top Rank, not Golden Boy like the rest of the fighters, and Top Rank may have other plans for him. He's only on this card because Golden Boy is involved with Pitalua and is working with Ricardo Maldonado, the Mexican promoter who won the rights to Valero-Pitalua at a purse bid. Valero might stay in though depending on the deal.
Charles (Philly)
Your ideal next opponent for Andre Ward? After the Sugar Peeww debacle, I'm getting tired of waiting for him to take a step up.
Dan Rafael (12:43 PM)
Andre is a great talent and fights in a strong weight class so there are several quality contenders for him to fight. I'm hopeful they will step him up in his next fight. There are guys like Edison Miranda and Sakio Bika who always come up as possibilities.
Charles (Philly)
I'll only post this once: any news on Kessler?
Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)
Nothing. Waldo is still missing.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Hey Dan, Great P4P rankings. how far is Nonito donaire from being included?
Dan Rafael (12:45 PM)
I would say a couple of strong wins and he ought to be in the top 20. He's a talent but he's a bit inactive and his win over Vic was awhile ago already.
Joel (NY)
Dan, is Castillo going to have a shot against Antonio Diaz? He seems to be a shell of what he once was
Dan Rafael (12:46 PM)
They both are, which means it ought to be a gruesome fight.
Antonio westwick
dan do u think it will be a good chance of seeing direll vs ward at 168? Or do u think they will try to build it up as the next Roy vs toney fight in the 90's?
Dan Rafael (12:47 PM)
It's a very interesting fight but right now neither guy has a title or is a big name. I think before either side would take a risk like that it would have to be something big. It's not right now.
jack, fort collins
i know you were down on allen green as an opponent for jermain taylor, but what do you think of a green/ward bout?
Dan Rafael (12:48 PM)
Bring it on.
Taylor (Salt Lake City, UT)
Dan, I was disgusted by Arum's statement comparing Marg's situation to Roger Maywether rushing the ring in the PBF/Judah fight. It's not apples to apples. Here's the difference: One trainer was reacting to a foul his fighter didn't commit, the other was trying to cheat and possibly do more serious bodily harm to another fighter. What a joke statement. Do you agree?
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
Yes, of course. Arum is throwing nonsense against the wall to see if it sticks and he thinks we are all stupid.
Dominic (San Francisco)
Dan! During the interview in the ring with Darchinyan after the fight, some fighter seemed to challenge Darchinyan because he said "Fight (Arce) first. He will beat you." Do you know who that fighter was? The camera never showed him.
Dan Rafael (12:49 PM)
I noticed that also. Have no idea.
Yorkis (Philly)
How good is Funeka? Was the Raheem fight an isolated performance, or the status quo?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
The Raheem fight is the only time I've seen Funeka fight, but it was impressive. His only loss was to Mzonke Fana, who won a world title but isn't all that much and got smashed by Barrera a few years ago in two rounds. But I was impressed with Funeka against Raheem and he has great size and seems like he also has an excellent right hand.
Pat (Brooklyn, NY)
Dan, What's the latest with Zab? I've heard Quintanna, Malinaggi, and Urango are all possible opponents, what's the word?
Dan Rafael (12:50 PM)
Nothing specific.
Jay (LA)
Dan, the point of Arum's comparison to Roger Mayweather was that a fighter is not always held responsible for the actions of his corner. Guess that was lost on most freaks.
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
It was a horrible analogy.
Rick, Marina, Ca
I read that Arum is already trying to set up a Marg vs Baldomir fight in Tijuana. Damn, Arum is trippin.
Dan Rafael (12:51 PM)
What a garbage fight.
Joel (NY)
Dan, I noticed the Gamboa shobox event got moved to later in April, any reason why?
Dan Rafael (12:52 PM)
I think it was maybe a little too close to Feb. 20, but I do not know the exact reason other than it has been moved.
Dave (Arlington Heights, Illinois
It's going to be fun watching Paul Williams absolutely going to destroy a rusty old Winky Wright!!!!! Who do you like in the Kirland/Love child fight? Very interesting match.
Dan Rafael (12:53 PM)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Hey, it's one of those fights with two tremendous offensive fighters. One of those whomever-lands-first sort of fights. But I think Julio has a better chin (guess we'll see) and a little better defense and a lot more experience. I do like Julio in the fight but a Kirkland win would not be a surprise either. I just hope it's exciting because on paper, it looks awesome.
Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)
Props to ESPN by the way for landing fights with Peter, Glen Johnson and Vitali!
Dane (Denver)
I read that MMA star Andrei Arlovski is getting in the boxing ring. Your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
Couldn't care less.
Kieran (Alexandria)
Dan: re: the fighter in the ring with Vic after the Arce fight: I asked some folks who were there and it was apparently Montiel.
Dan Rafael (12:54 PM)
There ya go.
Patrick (Mexico)
How far is JM Marquez from the top 20?
Dan Rafael (12:55 PM)
Ummm, he's like third.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Dan, How does the Mandalay Bay Events Center compare to the MGM Garden Arena in size?
Dan Rafael (12:56 PM)
MGM can hold as many as about 16,000 for boxing. Mandalay can hold maybe about 13,000.
Zach MPLS
Dan, if it is true that Pavlik was sick and injured for the Hopkins fight then why are the not asking for a rematch?
Dan Rafael (12:58 PM)
Because there would be no point and it is not economically viable. Kelly being sick or injured may have had a negative impact on him but the way Hopkins fought it would not have mattered. If Kelly was healthy, he still would have lost, just not as badly.
Hubie, Fredericksburg,va
Pacman fan here, do you think fighting Hatton on May 2nd is too soon for Pacman?
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
Too soon? What the hell are you talking about? Dude just knocked out Oscar and will make like at least $12 million.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
Now that the initial posturing and outrage has subsided on the part of Margarito, Capetillo, Arum, et al., do you think they really will go through with a fight in Mexico?
Dan Rafael (1:00 PM)
The outrage has not subsided.
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Hey Dan,Out of curiousity.....when you were the in-studio guest on FNF'S did you tape a Q+A segment? And if you did was it ever posted on the site?
Dan Rafael (1:01 PM)
Now, we never taped that. We ran out of studio time to get it in. Hopefully, next time we'll be able to get to it.
Fred (DC)
Do you see Roy Jones continuing to fight if he beats Sheika?
Dan Rafael (1:02 PM)
Of course.
Chad (Las Vegas)
Let's say a fighters draw is $10 Mil from a fight. What portion of that does he keep after paying his people?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
Depends on the deals he has with his people.
Charles (Philly)
Props to Brian Kenny for calling out BJ Flores on FNF: "I love that [anyone, anytime, anyplace] shirt you were wearing! Now I'd just like to see you back it up."
Scott (NJ)
Is Larry or Max working HBO's telecast tomororw?
Dan Rafael (1:03 PM)
It's a BAD, which means Max is on.
bill (carmel, ny)
dan, i'm not sure if margarito was HOF bound, but how in general does a fighter being found guilty of illegal hand wraps affect your vote?
Dan Rafael (1:04 PM)
I would see it is as unlikely, but I would never say never. Have to see what happens with the rest of his career and how all this plays out.
Ryan (Cleveland)
Can we all acknowledge that what will kill Margarito more than anything, is the fact that we can confirm he had at least one clean fight. In that fight he was thoroughly destroyed while barely touching his opponent with significance.
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
That is a great point.
Jake (Tallahassee, Florida)
Dan - News has it that Margarito can apply for a Nevada boxing license. What good is a suspension if the guy is free to fight in Mexico or Nevada?
Dan Rafael (1:05 PM)
He can apply for a license anywhere. But he won't get one, certainly not in Nevada. No chance.
Tom London
Dan,I rewtahced Lewis-Klitschko this morning, if the fight continued what do you think would have happened, personally I could see Lewis getting knocked out.
Dan Rafael (1:06 PM)
I thought Lennox was coming on and was going to stop Vitali eventually.
Jack (PA)
Is Floyd Mayweather now vindicated for not wanting to fight Margarito?
Dan Rafael (1:07 PM)
No, he still ducked him.
Thomas Columbia, SC
I've been following Paul Williams ever since he was fighting 6 rounders. Do you ever see him becoming a Household name, or a Hall a famer? What would it take for him to be a mega-star or do you think ultimately it's not in the cards?
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
He could certainly accomplish enough to warrant being a Hall of Famer someday. But being a household name seems unlikely given his lack of personality.
Sean(Ventura,Ca.)
Dan are you coming to San Jose next month for Kirkland,Julio fight?
Dan Rafael (1:09 PM)
No, I have a previous committment that weekend.
Glass Shower Door (Las Vegas)
Margarito can wrap his hands with plaster and I'll still put him down like I did Zab!
Diego (Gilroy)
Dan, how much will the Top Rank PPV cost for next weeks fights.
Dan Rafael (1:10 PM)
$44.95.
Braindamaged2too...(Asylum)
To THE Man!,A RAD, two weeks in a row. If no one else says it........ thank you! It's an awesome way to add a nice finish to what we all hope will be an excellant night of great fights.
Dan Rafael (1:11 PM)
I sure hope it's a good night of fights.
Jimmy (WY)
Interesting to see that Antonio Marg's fell completely off your P4P list
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
I thought a lot about that and I talked a number of industry people I respect. My inclination was to drop him and every single person I spoke to agreed.
Dan Rafael (1:12 PM)
Between the hand wrap situation and him having his head handed to him, it was too much to keep him in.
Scott (NYC)
Hey Dan,Joining late. How can you say Margs had loaded gloves when the tests havgen't even come back yet as to what the substance was? It is unlcear if the extra substance in the gloves was for protection or to cause damage.
Dan Rafael (1:14 PM)
I didn't say it, the commission said it and his trainer admitted there was a foreign substance not allowed in there.
Ricardo (LA)
Did you dropping Margarito from your p4p have more to do with his performance or the hand wrap incident?
Dan Rafael (1:15 PM)
Both.
John, Denver
what is the media's problem with boxing. SI and other outlets give little notice to all the great matches that have taken place the last year, but jump all over the margarito story
Dan Rafael (1:16 PM)
Of course they do. Which is why I have so little respect for some publications. Report the good and bad and report regularly, don't just jump on something because it's sensational.
Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)
Dan, how unbelievable is Haye's ego? He gets blessed with a shot at Wlad (undeserved), and then he starts making demands as if he is the draw? I'm really starting to dislike him.
Geoff (NYC)
DTM, I have heard Malignaggi will fight Judah at MSG in May, any truth to this or has it not been confirmed?
Dan Rafael (1:17 PM)
Nothing done whatsoever.
Jeff (South Dakota)
Dan, Bob Arum is an idiot. He has totally compromised himself regarding Margarito. I don't care that he's a promoter and Margarito is in his stable. This issue is only about Bob trying to cut a fat hog and He ought to know better. He and Margarito are both an embarrasment to the sport.
Dan Rafael (1:18 PM)
Apparently, a TON of Freaks feel that way because the amount of comments on this topic is overwhelming today.
David(CA)
after cambell wins tomorrow who is next in line?
Dan Rafael (1:19 PM)
Good question. Nate will be a free agent promotionally. There should be some good possibilities out there for him. Perhaps Marquez if he beats Diaz. I'd love to see that fight because it will clear up any confusion as to the real champion.
Rick, Marina, Ca
I just realized there is HBO boxing for 4 straight Saturday's begining tomorrow night, nice job HBO.
Dan Rafael (1:21 PM)
HBO does not have a fight Feb. 21.
Kelby (Omaha)
Can't wait for MSG's Feb 21. undercard and am curious to find out how Petersen handles Cherry. Duddy/Vanda has to be a good one as well...
Ryan (Lawrence, PA)
Hi Dan, what happened to Pavlik?s undercard? All of the recognizable names listed that were listed on your schedule are gone and have been replaced with a bunch of guys I?ve never heard of fighting in 4 and 6 rounders. Willie Nelson?? He?s a little old to be starting a boxing career, isn?t he? I look at Cotto?s undercard and see a ton of names I know, in real fights. I understand that New York is a bigger market, but we were charged just as much for our tickets as they were. What gives? Why is Arum giving us a bunch of stiffs?
Dan Rafael (1:23 PM)
Call him and ask.
Frank the Freak
Ricardo also believes that there was reasonable doubt in OJ's first trial.
Jake (Arl Hts, IL)
Was That Michael Moorer sitting next to Roach during the Vic-Arce fight?
Dan Rafael (1:24 PM)
Yes.
Riad London
Why dont we see u anymore on the HBO countdowns?
Dan Rafael (1:25 PM)
They do them all the time. There just hasn't been a fight to one on in for a little bit other than Mosley-Margacheato, which came up late and during the holidays.
Steve, Sac, Ca
Dano, what are Jennings chances against Cotto? Has he fought anybody highly ranked in his career?
Dan Rafael (1:27 PM)
I have seen Jennings fight many times. I give him very little chance. If Cotto is in shape and wasn't done in by Margacheato, I think Cotto waxes him.
Sal (Chicago)
Cosme Rivera has been on the recieving end of two classic and brutal uppercuts via Zan Judah and Andre Berto, you think Angulo knows what money punch to throw tomorrow?
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
I would hope his trainer knows that and they use that punch for his sake. Rivera is open for it.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
Anything at all on the burner in the way of a televised undercard for Tarver-Dawson?
Dan Rafael (1:29 PM)
There isn't a second TV fight on that card.
Omega (Windy City)
Hello Dan, Do you think Paul williams will ever fight at welterweight again?
Dan Rafael (1:30 PM)
No. Never.
Don, New York, NY
I think Shotimes Gus Johnson is no where near the caliber of Steve Albert. I think this takes away from Showtime's Championship boxing telecast.
Dan Rafael (1:31 PM)
How about you give him a chance? Is one show really enough to judge?
Bert (Minneapolis)
D$- great work on Sportscenter lately. It always seems whenever they talk boxing that Brian Kenney is the host!
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
As it should be, considering BK knows the most about boxing among the hosts and really likes it.
LK, Vegas
Dan, you ever look at Joe Goosen in the corner and get the impression that the fight he is working is just delaying his night out? I've never seen a better dressed trainer.
Dan Rafael (1:33 PM)
Joe Goossen's fight night shirts are the stuff of legend!
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Hey Dan. FYI, though you may already be aware: When HBO does BADs, they broadcast them at 10pm ET, and 10pm PT, as opposed to Championship Fights, which they typically broadcast simultaneously everywhere. The thing is, when you do RADs after BAD's, in the west your chat actually begins before the fights! I don't know what a good solution would be...I just thought I'd give you and FYI
Dan Rafael (1:35 PM)
I know that. I live in the east. I do the chats after I see the fights. That's the way it is. Get cable with the East coast feed.
Jimmy (Arlington, Va)
What fight are you most looking forward to tomorrow night?
Dan Rafael (1:37 PM)
I am interested in all three, but if I had to pick one, I would say Campbell-Funeka.
Brian (DC)
We need to find a trainer who wears Goosen shirts and McGirt glasses.
Rick, Marina, ca
What are your thoughts of Victor Ortiz? I have rarely been able to see him in action, but hear a bunch of good stuff about him.
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
He's got a lot of talent and charisma and an exciting style. There's a reason he was 2008 ESPN.com prospect of the year.
Todd (Queen City, NC)
Dan, is A. Peterson in tough with Cherry Bomb or is this another PPV undercard mismatch?
Dan Rafael (1:39 PM)
Cherry will certainly try his best, but I don't think he will be able to stay with Peterson, who is a far supoerior technician.
Larry (the Bronx)
Hey Dan, I know that their decision was based solely on last year's results, but do you think The Ring and Nigel Collins wish they could switch their choice of trainer of the year from Capetillo to Roach, whom they should've went with in the first place?
Dan Rafael (1:40 PM)
Too late to change now, but I thought the selection of Caperillo was wrong in the first place before any of this stuff ever happened.
Chris (Los Angeles CA)
D$ - I saw Izzy Vazquez speak at Vic's post fight press conference and said he would welcome a fight with him. Good chance that could happen? Would be a great fight.
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
I think it's possible.
tim,denver
danno, still at the kids valentine thing at school. still on the chat. definite freak stats right? go campbell! go sergio!
Dan Rafael (1:44 PM)
You sure you're not just out stalking Alvarado?
bill (carmel, ny)
dan, last year during your chats i was a software engineer in recess, but today i am a software engineer on furlough.
Dan Rafael (1:45 PM)
Hey, at least you are not a super interim software engineer on furlough.
Greg P (Staten Island,NY)
Dan, has BHOP ever mentioned publicly that he would try to win a cruiser title before retire. or was it just idle gossip?
Dan Rafael (1:46 PM)
He's talked about it a little but not in a heavily serious way.
Peter (Portland,OR)
Dan, with in light of all that's happened has Ring Magazine decided to recognize Mosley as the Welterweight Champ?
Dan Rafael (1:47 PM)
As far as I know, what happened has zero to do with it. The decision was made before the fight and why would this change anything?
John (CA)
Dan, I am a super interim softwate engineer in "recess"
Derek ( Edmonton, Alberta)
Dan, this is unreal: another site is quoting the WBC's Sulamain as saying he didn't want MannyPac to fight Hatton because of the risk involved. Sulamain also went on record in Pac's favour during the Hatton/Pac negotiations, and now is claiming the Margacheato ban is discriminatory against Mexicans. How can he be allowed to hold his office and be so clearly biased and opinionated? The WBC disgusts me.
Dan Rafael (1:48 PM)
Sulamain's comments should not be taken seriously about anything. He's a complete blowhard.
Dan, St Louis, MI
Dan,You seem convinced that floyd mayweather is coming out of retirement but it seems like he's resolute in not coming back. In your opinion, what will it take to get him back in the ring?
Dan Rafael (1:49 PM)
When he runs out of money, he will be back.
Charles (Philly)
I wish Gary Shaw wouldn't interrupt his fighters during their post-fight interviews. I understand that the promoter will be in the camera shot (picture BHop rubbing Mosley's neck), but I'm watching to hear from the fighter, not the promoter.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
I think Cotto's face was enough evidence that Margo used loaded gloves. Shane hit Miguel a lot and his face wasn't any where near the shape it was after Margarito.
mike costa rica
dan, any idea where the march 27 FNF with sam peter will be at??
Dan Rafael (1:50 PM)
Not specifically as a site is not done yet, but Dan Goossen told me this morning it will be in California.
Cyrus (San Francisco, CA)
Uh, Dan, didn't you hear, he has $600 million. I mean, he made like $50 million alone for knocking out the Big Show. Yep, he's on his way to a billion dollar empire...
Dan Rafael (1:51 PM)
And I'm going to defeat Obama for president in four years.
IRS
Dan, Floyd will run out of money sooner than you think. We guarantee it.
Robert Romano (Plainfield, NJ)
What going on with Vivian Harris?
Dan Rafael (1:52 PM)
He recently turned down a fight with Victor Ortiz.
State of California
The media has failed to report that in addition to the one year suspension, we have sentenced Margarito to 100 viewings of Briggs-Liakhovich, and Capatillo to 200 viewings of the Manny-Oscar undercard.
Randy (Cincinnati, OH)
If Margarito were to fight in Mexico during his CSAC suspension, with Arum as his promoter, wouldn't Arum be risking having his promoter's license suspended in California and by proxy the other commission states?
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Yes.
Jay (LA)
Dan, harder to understand: sanctioning body rankings or the nearly 1500 page stimulus bill?
Dan Rafael (1:53 PM)
Toss up.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Williams-Wright tickets go on sale at 10am pacific on Ticketmaster. $50, $100, $150, $200, $300. I hope I'm not the only one who cares.
Rick (Boise)
Over/Under 5 times we hear "Joke Coach Roach" in Hatton-Pacquiao 24/7.
Dan Rafael (1:55 PM)
Over.
Jose (BX)
Any word on Ivan Calderon next fight?
Dan Rafael (1:56 PM)
He may defend in PR on March 28 against Cesar Chanchila. Check out today's notebook.
Zo (AZ)
Just to add a few more cents on Arum; I understand the attorney in him and have no problem going above and beyond for his fighter; but those comments would be best kept to himself; the worse part is I feel he is doing a disservice to his other fighters, Cotto for one, and any other of his fighters by claiming he wont do any show in CA. That in my opinion is compromising all of his other fighters.
Dan Rafael (1:57 PM)
Bob is full of it. He said he'd never promote again in Nevada after the Mosley-DLH rematch. Guess what? He promotes in Nevada.
kyle (CA)
Dan, whats your favorite fight ever? mine has to be Castillo-Chico 1. i have it on my DVR and watch it at least 1 a month.
Dan Rafael (1:58 PM)
Not sure it's my all-time favorite fight, but it is certainly the best fight I have ever covered in person. DVRs can sometimes malfunction. You should record it to a DVD just to be safe.
Mike (San Diego, CA)
Dan, Great Notebook today. Props to Golden Boy for putting together the lightweight tourney so quickly. Adding the Casmayor/Julio Diaz fight makes it a must buy, I just hope they price it right.
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
The lightweight card looks very good. It's not a huge card and won't do huge numbers, but every fight is interesting to varying degrees and each fight should be solid. I'm not sure what the price will be but I would guess either $34.95 or $39.95.
Scott (NYC)
Dan, recently bought a DVD/VCR combo so I can turn all my old tapes into DVDs. But it won't let me burn new HBO fights onto DVD bc of copyright protection. Do you have this issue?
Dan Rafael (2:00 PM)
I do not have that issue. I record everthing to my DVR and then burn a DVD later so I know exactly how long to set the recorder for.
Andy in Tampa
Hi Dan,If you were about to be attacked while just chillin what fighter, past or presemt, would you want by your side?
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
BHop.
Chino (Minneapolis, MN)
Would have liked to see David Diaz as part of the lightweight tournament....
Dan Rafael (2:02 PM)
That would be OK, but David is recovering from a knee injury.
Jorge (East Los Angeles)
Dan, I apologize to the freaks for letting them down with my Maidana pick over Kotelnik last chat. I saw it was a split decision, I'm curious how you scored the fight and if you felt that Kotelnik deserved the nod?
Dan Rafael (2:04 PM)
Based on seeing from the end of round 2 to the end, I thought Kotelnik eked it out, but I would not have been surprised to see Maidana get the nod. Good fight and Maidana is a good fighter. I did not drop him out of my top 10 after the fight.
David (Old Bridge, NJ)
Hey Dan, I followed your advice and got a dvd burner, but when I record from my HD cable box, the dvds turn out letterboxed..then I have to blow them up when I play them back. Do you have this problem ? Thanks !
Dan Rafael (2:05 PM)
Don't record them in HD. Record the standard broadcast to your DVR and then make the DVD.
Jim Lampley
"And in the Hatton corner where they speak Mayweatherese, our interpreter is Floyd Jr."
Dan Rafael (2:06 PM)
Hilarious.
Scott (NYC)
What type of recorder do you have bc mine won't tape from the DVR either, it still recognizes the copyright protection.
Dan Rafael (2:07 PM)
I have two Panasonic dual deck DVD/VCRs. I love them.
Zach MPLS
Dan does espn pay you extra as their dvd-r expert?
Dan Rafael (2:08 PM)
Alas, no.
Luis (PR)
Jim Lampley, LOL!!! Freak line of the year so far.
Greg Phoenix, AZ
Hey Gerardo, get Direct TV. You will get the east coast feed and then can jump on the RAD with Dan the Man.
Daniel (UK)
I agree with you and JP about Arum. What disappointed me most was his suggestion that Margarito only got banned because he was mexican. Now it looks like several places in mexico are willing to let him box there. Its a black eye for boxing.
chris
to scott (nyc) you can get a device for like $20 that allows you to stream DVR to PC via A/V to USB converter and you can burn from laptop/pc that way!
Brian (Brooklyn)
How good is the quality of your DVD recordings, better or worse than a regular DVD movie?
Dan Rafael (2:10 PM)
If I take a broadcast from my DVR and burn it to a DVD it looks broadcast quality as long as it doesn't go to much over 2 hours.
Sean from Richmond
HEY DTM, it's been a while. With Cotto speaking adamantly against Margarito and Arum speaking in defense of him, does this pose a conflict at Top Rank?
Dan Rafael (2:11 PM)
Not at all. They were on a media teleconference talking about it yesterday and Cotto said his opinion and Arum said his and said it was OK to disagree, which it is.
Lou MD
Arum pulling the race card proves who he really is
Department Of Justice
Dan, you realize that recording that stuff is at least borderline illegal, and encouraging others to do so only exposes you to greater legal liability, right? I don't like it either, but it is the law.
Dan Rafael (2:12 PM)
It's not illegal at all. It would be illegal if I sold it or charged folks to come to my house and watch.
IBM IT
Dan, do u want a job with us?
Anthony (San Diego ca)
DTM, I cant remmember?? how many Ricky Hattons are there??
Dan Rafael (2:12 PM)
From what I have heard, just one.
Vic (SA, TX)
DANNO!! Your chats are insane bro. Do you have any idea when talented young light heavy Tavoris Cloud will be back in action? If so will it be televised?
Dan Rafael (2:15 PM)
I wish I knew. If you've seen Cloud, alert the FBI.
Mike (Rome, NY)
What a terrible week for sports...Arod on roids...Phelps hits the bong...and now Margo loads up his gloves. What happened to the integrity of the game??
Isaac (Oxnard, Ca)
Hey Dan, for Valentines Day I told my girlfriend we would have a romantic candle-lit dinner...while watching the fights!!!
Dan Rafael (2:17 PM)
Nice.
Brooks (Cleveland)
Another impressive performance today Dan, I come back from a long meeting and you're stil here . . .
JP (Columbus, OH)
Tavoris was on my milk carton today
Paul B (NY, NY)
I have been on a hot streak recently and wanted to share my predictions: Perro KO in 6, UD for Nate, and Cintron does not answer the bell in the 11th. Thanks in advance for the upcoming RAD.
Paul (St. Louis, MO)
Dan, Has there been any news related to Stevie Forbes next move?
Dan Rafael (2:18 PM)
He has a small fight coming up in Oregon. I dot recall the date off the top of my head, but it's on the ESPN.com fight sked I maintain.
Patrick (Mexico)
Phelps is nothing like the other cases. His weed has nothing to do with his performance.
Dan Rafael (2:19 PM)
But I think we now know why he was eating 10,000 calories a day, don't we?
Panasonic
We're making a special Fight Freak edition DVD recorder - will you be our spokesman ? It'll be shaped like your head, and the dvd tray will come out where your mouth would be. We'll call it the DR (Dan Rafael) DVD recorder. You in ?
Zach MPLS
Actually I have a dvdr question too. Have you had to replace your dvdr's if so how long do they last? All this talk about them not working for people has me worried that mine will break andrecording fights will be over for me!
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
I have yet to have a problem with any DVDs I have recorded and I have been putting all of my fights on DVD since about early 2005.
aziz (newcastle,uk)
At Grand Ronde, Ore.: Steve Forbes vs. Jason Davis, 10 rounds, welterweights March 6th 2009
Dan Rafael (2:20 PM)
Congrats. Someone who actually knows how to use the schedule!
Grey (Cape Cod, MA)
Dan, did you notice the WBA has Kali Meehan ranked #1 at heavyweight? What are they smoking???
Dan Rafael (2:21 PM)
Michael Phelps' pot?
Jared (Harrisburg, PA)
Dannah Montana,Two quick questions..1. Do you know anywhere to get a Calzaghe-Jones fight poster?2. Buy Or Sell The return of the P4P G.0.A.T. Floyd Money Mayweather?
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
1. For the poster, look at spboxing.com. 2. Buy.
Corey (Petersburg, WV)
What is your recommended DVD recorder? I know you have a Panasonic, but what is the model and is there a new one out you have heard good things about?
Dan Rafael (2:22 PM)
I'm pretty sure they don't make my model anymore since I got it several years ago, but they have a similar DVD/VCR combo. I see it at Costco all the time.
Lamb(Upstate NY)
Danimal, I work in a bar. On wednesday we installed a computer system my boss said to be used for busines purposes only...But here I am. My question is what is next for my man Mean Joe Greene????
Dan Rafael (2:24 PM)
Well he was supposed to fight Sergio Martinez last month on HBO, but he had a kidney stone. I think he's still dealing with that.
Costco
Thanks for the plug!
Dan Rafael (2:24 PM)
Loyal member since about 1998.
England Department of the Census
There is only one Ricky Hatton!!!! It's a fact.
Anthony (San Diego Ca)
I didnt get my gf a gift for Valentines, cause I just bought a 46' Samsung 1080p 120hz so I could watch boxing in all its glory, does that elevate me to Freak status?? and do you have a place for me to stay cuz my gf kicked me out??
Dan Rafael (2:25 PM)
No and no.
Bert (Minneapolis)
Sorry to ask about this guy, but is Spinks-Ladimore ever gonna happen? I want Ladimore to rock Spinks so we don't have to mention him anymore.
Dan Rafael (2:27 PM)
Spinks-Latimore should happen, yes. There is a purse bid scheduled next week.
Lamb(Upstate NY)
Why don't we let John Duddy fight Chavez Jr. ..... It would probably do decent business and one of those chumps would be saddled with a loss???
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
It's a fight Arum has talked about.
Yorkis (Philly)
I strongly suggest storing fights in AVI format... no one will have a DVD player 3 years from now.
Dan Rafael (2:28 PM)
I will.
Jermain (UK)
Dan, do you think it makes sense for Bernard Hopkins to fight Roy Jones if he beats Shieka? He doesnt have too many options and it could still be a good fight.
Dan Rafael (2:29 PM)
I guess they could still make it but it is not nearly the event it would have been even a year ago. I think that ship has sort of sailed after so many attempts to make it. But nothing would surprise me.
Jared (Harrisburg, PA)
BUY or SELL-Undertaker wins Elimination Chamber Sunday at No Way Out and headlines WM 25. We can only hope!
Dan Rafael (2:30 PM)
We can only hope.
Tom (Cincinnati)
Excuse me? No one will have a DVD players 3 years from now? What's going to happen to the two that I have already? Will they disappear?
Shawn (NYC)
DAN!!! (Best Norm impression I could do...). I am fairly dedicated fan to the sport (watch nearly all HBO/Showtime/ESPN telecasts) but wanted to see a card live. Aside from MSG, what other sites nearby do you recommend that wouldn't cost me a second mortgage?
Dan Rafael (2:31 PM)
There are smaller shows in and around NYC. You should try one of DiBella's Broadway Boxing cards or one of DeGuardia's shows in the Bronx.
John (ATL GA)
Nobody will won a car in three years either. we will all be flying around in spaceships
corey(sc)
how do you feel about a zab vs jr.witter fight would this be a great fight for the fans.
Dan Rafael (2:33 PM)
You been sharing the pipe with Phelps? 1. The already fought several years ago. 2. It was one of the worst fights of all-time.
Gus(Passaic,NJ)
To shawn: Go the the prudential center in newark and go watch adamek fight, i believe it feb 27
Dan Rafael (2:35 PM)
Good call.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Dan, ANOTHER bad consequence of this whole Margarito mess: Chavez Jr. is now the undisputed most popular active fighter in Mexico. Ugh.
crazy speculations
Yeah, and after a 100-year run, no one will listen to AM radio in 3 years either.
Steven (Rialto, CA)
Any ideas on who Humberto Soto's opponent is going to be?
Dan Rafael (2:35 PM)
TBA.
Bert (Minneapolis)
No one will want to watch John Ruiz fight in three years, but it'll still happen.
Dan Rafael (2:37 PM)
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you enjoy today's notebook and this weekend's fights. Be back here tomorrow night probably around midnight ET -- when the HBO fights are over -- for a special Rafael After Dark chat. See you then. Peace.
