Chris from Massachusetts
Matt - Do you expect Crabtree to run at his pro day?
Matt Mosley (12:02 PM)
Chris, I think Crabtree will feel compelled to run at his Pro Day. If not, he'll hold a special workout -- perhaps at the Michael Johnson facility in Dallas. Welcome to the marathon chat by the way.
Steiny (NYC)
Matt, I have heard some people say that Michael Oher would be a great pick for the Washington Redskins. Can you see the Redskins going after Oher?
Matt Mosley (12:03 PM)
I think they could find a more accomplished offensive tackle than Oher at No. 13. I think you might see them try to identify a pass-rusher like Brian Orakpo out of UT.
Devin from Boston
Todd Mcshay thinks that the former walk-on LB Clay Matthews from USC is a Patriots type player--versatile with a great work ethic. Is this guy really worthy of a 1st rounder or did he benefit greatly from the tremendous skill surrounding him at USC?
Matt Mosley (12:05 PM)
Devin, you may have a point about the talent surrounding him. I've heard Matthews name come up in association with the Browns more than the Patriots. I think he'll be a solid NFL player. I don't see him as an elite guy at all, though.
Corey (Philadelphia, PA)
With the Eagles picking at 21 and 28 this year, do you see Knowshon Morerno or LeSean McCoy still being there at those two picks, and how do you see the Eagles using there 2 picks?
Matt Mosley (12:06 PM)
Corey, I think the Eagles will be trying to identify the best OT at that position. If they aren't in love with one, look for them to trade down and grab some extra picks. Unless you decide that Moreno's definitely the long-term answer at running back, I wouldn't take him there. You can find solid running backs later in the draft. Michael Oher out of Ole Miss a guy to look at with one of those picks.
Justin wv
Matt, Sad lion fan here. But i think the lions are in great positions to get some great talent to turn this thing around, but i think drafting stafford #1 is a big mistake when they could not keep any QB in the nfl on there feet so why not start with th O-line. please explaine why we should take stafford?
Matt Mosley (12:08 PM)
Stafford has all the tools. Big arm, great size. Highly intelligent kid. But I agree that it's a crapshoot and the money would be insane. If you identify an OT you love, you could follow Miami's lead from last year. There's a Baylor offensive tackle named Jason Smith that will become a star in the league.
Brian (New York)
What do you think of the chances of Darrius Heyward-Bey going to the Jets in the 2nd Round?
Matt Mosley (12:09 PM)
I think there might be a run on receivers in the first round this year. Last year's draft was WEAK at that position. I think the guy's a playmaker and could see him sneaking ahead of Hakeem Nicks. So I'm not sure he'll be there in the second round.
RJ (Pittsburgh)
Can you explain the Matt Cassell hype to me, please? Why would anyone give up multiple first day draft picks for him. He did fine, I suppose, but I could look decent throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker.
Matt Mosley (12:11 PM)
It's ridiculously tough to identify a franchise quarterback. I think there are teams who would trust a Matt Cassell much more than the unknown. And right now, the verdict's out on Sanchez and Stafford. At least you know that Cassell was successful for a season. And he was thrown into a tough situation.
Jacob (Washington)
Is there anyway Crabtree could fall to the Raiders at the 7th pick?
Matt Mosley (12:11 PM)
Certainly
Ivan (Russia)
The earth is getting warmer. Is T.O. to blame?
Matt Mosley (12:12 PM)
I've asked Al Gore that same question.
Bryan, Tulsa
Matt, Do you see the cowboys grabbing Bomar or Harrell
Matt Mosley (12:13 PM)
Wouldn't shock me if they took a long look at Bomar. Big arm, nice size. I definitely think they'll look to take a developmental type player at QB in the mid rounds -- and he's a local kid. Jerry Jones loves the local angle.
Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)
Do you see OK St. TE Pettigrew falling to the Falcons?
Matt Mosley (12:13 PM)
I think he'll go late in the first, yes.
Brian, San Diego
Who do you think the better RB is, Moreno or Beanie Wells?
Matt Mosley (12:14 PM)
Moreno will prove to be the better back.
Rob: Minneapolis
What can you tell me about the QB from Kansas State? Anyway the Vikes would take him at 22? Thanks.
Matt Mosley (12:14 PM)
Nope, the Vikings aren't going to take him early. Freeman has excellent size and a big arm. Lots of unknowns, though. I wouldn't take him before the third round.
Keegan from Fuquay Varina, North Carolina
The Dallas Cowboys should trade T.O. to the Raiders for the Raiders first round pick, but only if Jerry Maclin is still availble.
Matt Mosley (12:16 PM)
Keegan, I'm sure you're joking. You're going for the Crazy Old Man Deal between Jerry and Al, right? Not even the Raiders would trade a top-10 pick for the aging T.O.
Adam (Ohio)
Do the Browns need Aaron Curry at ILB or do they need to go after a passrusher? Watching them never get pressure on the QB was painful.
Matt Mosley (12:18 PM)
This team desperately needs a pass rusher. They can't beat anyone one on one. I've heard a lot of experts say Curry's the safest pick in the draft. Safest isn't always the best, though.
Ashish Heda, San Jose CA
How many USC guys you see going in the first round ?
Matt Mosley (12:18 PM)
I think I had four of them going -- at least.
Chris (Philadelphia, PA)
What is DJ Moore's ceiling as far as draft position goes? Is the the kind of guy that's going to blow up the combine and move up, or maybe run a little slower than expected and move down? I think he would be a tremendous player across from Darrelle Revis in New York with his ball skills playmaking ability, he could really make teams pay for picking on him. Any chance the Jets give him a look at 17?
Matt Mosley (12:19 PM)
I think he has a lot to gain with a great 40 time. But there's some thought that a slow time could end up relegating him to safety.
Brandon (Shreveport, LA)
What about a TO trade to the Raiders for Asomugha and some picks. Would this work under the salary cap?
Matt Mosley (12:20 PM)
T.O.'s not going to the Raiders. Trust me.
Brian (Amissville, VA)
Hey Matt, I'm a die-hard Gator fan who absolutely loved Percy Harvin so my question is this- why is he rated so low? Personally I think he's better than Hayward-Bey. Is the perception on him that he will be just another Florida WR bust?
Matt Mosley (12:21 PM)
He's one of those guys that teams aren't sure what to do with. He's sort of a WR-RB hybrid. And Reggie Bush's lack of success isn't helping a guy like Harvin. Superior speed. I think he could have a nice career. Teams just don't know what to make of him.
Richard (Pennsylvaina)
Andy Reid is famous more for his late round draft picks, rather than his first rounders. Do you a) see the Eagles trading out of the first round again, and b) Who is a gem that may be available for the Eagles in later rounds?
Matt Mosley (12:23 PM)
Richard, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Eagles traded down. You have to see how much value you see at that No. 21 pick. If you could package both picks and end up getting multiple offensive tackles, it would be worth it. There will be a run on offensive tackles just like last season. That's how guys like Duane Brown get picked at least a round too early. We'll see if the Eagles can hold off or if they're desperate enough to grab someone.
Tom (Washington DC)
Matt, I believe the redskins biggest need is to replace Stephon Heyer at LT. Which offensive lineman in the draft is the most suited for this position if the skins choose a tackle in the first round.
Matt Mosley (12:25 PM)
You'd be drafting the guy to eventually replace the aging Chris Samuels, who's starting to break down a little bit. If Jason Smith's around, he's an elite pass protector who can learn to be better in the running game. That's a name to watch at 13.
Ali (Kentucky)
Do you think the Patriots are more likely to take a defensive back or a linebacker with their first round pick?
Vinnie (Seattle)
Where do you think Sanchez will go? Are there going to be any good o-line prospects for the Steelers to take with the last pick in the first round or will they take the best player available rather than address this need, again?
Matt Mosley (12:28 PM)
Vinnie, someone good always falls to the Steelers. It's just how things work. They'll sit there and wait for a nice player to fall to them. I think it could be an OT like Oher.
Wishful Thinking
Lions trade next years first rounder for the Eagles 28th pick. They trade that pick and the Dallas pick for Cassel. Then they draft Crabtree (not another WR). THe Eagles use the pick they get in next years draft to select Taylor Mays to replace Dawkins.
Matt Mosley (12:29 PM)
You have way too much time on your hands. My head hurts. My time here grows short. I feel like there's so many things we've left unsaid. Someone come up with a decent NFC Beast question. Quick!!!
Josh: (Philadelphia, PA)
Whats up Matt, what are your thoughts on how the Eagles will do in the draft this year?
Matt Mosley (12:33 PM)
Guys, I was trying to pick through about 1,000 questions in a frantic search for an NFC East question. This was the best I could do. Josh, you have to try to replace Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan. Fortunately, you have two picks. And if you run across a safety, it might be a good time to replace Dawkins. There are a couple of CBs that could run themselves into playing safety during the combine. The Eagles should be waiting to pounce. Thanks for a great chat. I'm out!
Zack (Indianapolis, Indiana)
Who do you see the Colts drafting this year? I just can't see them taking a DT in the first round.
Matt Williamson (12:35 PM)
I am sure they would love to take a potential starting DT in round one-I just don't see that player being available when they pick. Peria "Fucilli" Jerry is the only one who could slip due to his lack of size, but once again, I don't forsee it. If history has tought us anything about Indy, it is that they use first round picks on players to make Peyton's life easier. Marvin will surely be moving on. They could go WR and than attack the D with the rest of the draft.
Running Bear (Green Bay)
Do the Pack take Raji if available, or do they like someone better there?
Matt Williamson (12:36 PM)
Once again, I bet Raji isn't available once it is all said and done. He is the premier DT in this draft and fits any system-many will want to secure his services. I continue to bring this up, but going to a 3-4 for GB is a terrible idea and by doing so, they have multiplied their D needs dramatically.
David (Chicago)
Matt the ESPN mock drafts keeping showing Malcolm Jenkins being taken by the Packers but don't you think that the packers should go for help on their line I think BJ Raji would begreat what about you?
Matt Williamson (12:37 PM)
Along the lines of what I was saying, I just don't know how GB could not go front seven now with this D change.
CURTIS RICHMOND,VA
Where do you see Victor "Macho" Harris going in the draft?
Matt Williamson (12:38 PM)
I don't love the guy, but I think these latest forums (Senior Bowl, Combine, Workout Day, etc) will help him. My problem with the guy is that I don't see him as a very good tackler, but you can tend to forget those things when he hasn't really played a true game in such a long time.
Telly (New Jersey)
The Giants are in need of a WR or two. Do you see Kenny britt or Hakeen Nicks being around when they pick in the second round?
Matt Williamson (12:39 PM)
No chance in the 2nd round, unless Britt's interviews go terribly and scouts must downgrade him for his character. Not even sure Nicks will be there for NYG's first round pick, but he would be a good selection there for Big Blue.
Andy (Boston Massachusetts)
Is there any chance of the Patriots trading to the Top 5 in a Cassel trade to select Aaron Curry or Malcolm Jenkins?
Matt Williamson (12:41 PM)
I would say doubtful. Not really BB's style. I would bet that he wants more picks-surer things with less risk. Getting that high in the draft is expensive, both from a financial/signing standpoint and in terms of using up all your resources to get just one player. Think more quantity instead of one guy for NE.
David(Plantation,Fl)
What is the Dolphins biggest need and who do you think they will take in the first round?
Matt Williamson (12:42 PM)
I don't see one huge glaring need, but they still could use a lot including RT if Carey leaves. A true #1 type WR would be great-but tough to find with the 25th pick. You know Parcells and company will continue to fortify the entire front seven-wisely-and C Crowder could move on. CB/FS are noticable needs. They have a lot of directions that they can go.
AmAD(Michigan)
Where do you see Javon Ringer going in the draft?
Matt Williamson (12:43 PM)
2nd Day-Maybe fourth round. I would clearly take the five juniors over Ringer and probably a senior or two like Jennings and Brown from NC St. Isn't real big. Looks like a complementary RB to me. Can he be a returner? Would surely help his cause.
Josh (Fremont, CA)
With the Raiders WR position as weak as it is. Any chance they get Crabtree and Nicks with there first 2 picks. Is this a pipe dream?
Matt Williamson (12:44 PM)
Their WR position is extremely weak-but so are a lot of spots on their roster. OT? In fact, two OLinemen wouldn't be such a bad idea. Are you really comfortable with the entire DL either? I certainly am not. If they did get Crabtree, I think going WR back to back is a luxory that this team simply cannot afford...but it is Al Davis making the decisions, so I will never rule it out.
Bryan, (Dallas, TX)
Hey Matt, do you see any potential for a big draft-day trade early in the first round, especially if Sanchez or Stafford slips past KC?
Matt Williamson (12:45 PM)
That is always possible. Some of that will have to do with how much Freeman's stock soars over the next few months. If most teams see a huge drop off after the two first QBs and one starts to fall-then phones will ring.
Rob (from newark nj)
who do you think dallas will be looking at
Matt Williamson (12:47 PM)
Well, they don't have a first rounder, which is an obvious concern. In free agency, they need to sign a backup QB for openers. On DDay, I would bet that WR is their top pick, even if TO remains with the team. DL help wouldn't hurt either if Canty leaves. This team doesn't have a lot of needs on paper-just have to put it all together on the field.
Josh (Stephens City, VA)
Matt, What do you see the Niners doing with their first round pick?
Matt Williamson (12:48 PM)
CB makes a lot of sense, as would a FS-but there really isn't a FS to get excited about. Pass rush help obviously would help out their DBs as well. RT is a big hole and I am not comfortable with the WR stable either. They have options for sure. Nicks wouldn't be a bad pick-neither would Heyward Bey.
Ty(South Carolina)
Can we Get a Buccaneers question?!?!?!? I say best defensive player avaliable, but a WR to take pressure off Bryant would be great. What do you think?
Matt Williamson (12:49 PM)
Yeah, AB could use some help-no question about that. TBay has a LOT of cap money, so projecting their first rounder is harder than most teams simply for the fact that they will surely bring in some bodies (Haynesworth?) via free agency.
Tom (Boston, MA)
Matt, do you think the Patriots are more likely to draft Clint Sintim or Brian Cushing?
Matt Williamson (12:49 PM)
Cushing. I just think he is the superior football player. I might like Mathews even more then both though.
Peter (Virginia)
Who do you see Buffalo going after in the draft?
Matt Williamson (12:50 PM)
Some teams have many areas they can go, but Buff has a few big needs to me that they must attack including DE, OC, WR and TE. Strong OC draft, so that could be round two. Same is true for TE, but Pettigrew would be tough to pass on. When in doubt, take a pass rusher and I honestly believe that this D is one strong pass rushing DE away from being quite good.
California
How about Uconn's running back Donald Brown? Is there potential for him to be a star in the NfL? Where will draft? Thank.
Matt Williamson (12:52 PM)
Good player. Productive-obviously. A star? That might be a reach, but it wouldn't blow me away if he were that 2nd round RB who ended up having a great year next year if he goes to the right enviroment. His drafting could go under the radar a bit, but when the lights go on, he performs. Side note: My Panthers are going to give UCONN everything they can handle tonight!
Ray (Lebanon, PA)
Is Kenny Britt a first rounder in your opinion? I don't know why he isn't being talked about more, with such great size.
Matt Williamson (12:54 PM)
Character is a concern, so his interviews will be huge for where he is picked. I like him as a player-don't get me wrong-but just how sudden is he in and out of his breaks? Pure deep speed? As a junior and with his potential off the field concerns, the Combine and workouts will be huge for him. He could really jump up or down draft boards.
Akhtar (Woodhaven Mi)
There has been a lot of talk about where Pat White will go and what position he will play. What are your thoughts on the West Virginia QB?
Matt Williamson (12:54 PM)
Future WR/Returner/Wild Cat guy. He is just too short, not accurate enough and simply doesn't throw the football well enough to play QB in the NFL in my opinion. However, he is the type of guy you want on your team.
jermaine ( allentown pa
hey matt hows it going? anyway my question to you is do you think the eagles should trade one of thier first round draft picks to try to land anquan bolden
Matt Williamson (12:55 PM)
I do. It is win now time for Philly and they have the resources to really improve their club in a hurray. Do it. Be aggressive this offseason. It is that time for them.
Ben (McKinney, TX)
Where do you see ILB Jasper Brinkley going in the draft? Would he be a good fit for the Cowboys' 34 defense?
Matt Williamson (12:56 PM)
Heavier guy who would fit well at ILB (on the strongside) in the 34. Thumper. But a two down player. Very limited vs. the pass.
Connor (Kansas)
Who do you think the Chiefs will pick at the number 3 pick? I want them to pick Arron Curry.
Matt Williamson (12:57 PM)
LB is an easy position to fill, but I see little risk with Curry. Hard to argue with that, but their biggest need-by far-is finding a pass rush. It is eary for Orapko or E Brown, but don't be shocked if both players' stocks improve over the next few weeks.
Kyle (Brockport. NY)
Who do the Broncos take if Raji isn't there at 12? Brown? Orakpo if he is there?
Matt Williamson (12:58 PM)
I bet all three are gone. Like GB, but not as exaggerated, this move to a 3-4 is going to be very tough to pull off. They need to go front 7, butwho is that guy to pull the trigger on at that spot with those three off the board? Maybe Maybin, but I see more risk with him.
Jon (Dayton, OH)
Why is everyone so down on James Laurinaitis, saying that he wont be good at the next level. What more does he have to prove? He's got size, he's tough, and his motor is always running.
Matt Williamson (12:59 PM)
Very true. I don't see a lot of bust potential with him-high floor. But, not sure that he has an incredibly high cieling either. Would be a great player for the Giants though. Can play ILB or OLB-but isn't really a perfect fit for either.
Matt Williamson (1:00 PM)
Folks, this was fun as always. James Walker is going to take it from here. Take care.
Heath: Cincinnati, Ohio
Hey James! Since T.J. Houshmandzadeh is likely to sign elswhere, do you think the Bengals would possibly think about Crabtree at #6? I think the guy is a future hall of famer.
James Walker (1:03 PM)
I'm not a fan of drafting WRs so high in the draft. I don't think the position is important enough. Cincinnati will consider it, but its better off taking an offensive or defensive lineman.
Steve (St. Louis, MO)
Every mock draft I've seen has the Steelers taking an OL, but with so much depth at the position, do you think the Steelers may add some youth to their DL if the right prospect falls to them? Tyson Jackson, perhaps?
James Walker (1:05 PM)
I wouldn't say the Steelers are deep with offensive linemen. Many are free agents, and there's also a question of quality. That's why most feel Pittsburgh will go in that direction. The defensive line is old, but that position if filled with good, veteran players.
Elliot (Lexington, KY)
Does Baltimore use their 1st rounder on a LB, or do they concentrate solely on signing their big 3 (Suggs, Lewis, Scott). Lewis is on the decline of a fabulous career. Do we let him take max money in big D, or keep him a Raven for life?
James Walker (1:10 PM)
I notice there has been some talk of Baltimore taking a linebacker with the first pick and I'm not sure why. The Ravens need corners first, WRs second. I think Suggs stays. The Ravens will make a very fair offer to Lewis, but he may test the market to see if he can do better.
steve (philly pa)
do you see the steelers taking 3 olineman with their first three picks?
James Walker (1:11 PM)
Not at all, Steve. The Steelers need offensive linemen, but they will spread it around.
Ray Rainer (Hanford, CA)
ok, cal me crazy, but with the Lions drafting twice in the first round would it be crazy to take Crabtree first? The second pick you could take a defensive need or another offensive player. I also see Ghram Harrell with the Lions in the later rounds. You would have a quaterback and reciever who have that chemistry. Add Calvin Johnson in the mix and it's an improvement. I'm not a Lions fan but to me that makes better sense then drafting Sanchez or Stratford
James Walker (1:12 PM)
If the Detroit Lions take Michael Crabtree with the No. 1 overall pick, they might as well have kept Matt Millen.
Byron (Boston Massachusetts)
In your opinion, who is the better QB, Mark Sanchez or Matthew Stafford?
James Walker (1:15 PM)
Stafford has more tools to succeed in the pro game. That's what sticks out this time of year. That's why a prospect like Joe Flacco could step in physically and succeed in his first year. A lot of it will have to do with the team each QB goes to as well.
Jared (Minot North Dakota)
Who do you think is the biggest sleeper in the draft? Offense, defense, or as a returner?
James Walker (1:18 PM)
I don't know about biggest sleeper. But a player I liked all last year that didn't get too much pub is WR Hakeem Nicks from UNC. I think he will help a team right away.
Steiny (NYC)
James, my man. Leta??s keep the tradition alive. How are you today? Quick question. What are the chances the Cleveland Browns select Aaron Curry with the 5th pick in the 2009 NFL draft?
James Walker (1:19 PM)
Steiny, what's up? If Curry is there, I think that's the pick. But a lot can change between now and April. Stocks rise and fall and teams get hot on certain players.
William (Covina, CA)
I know the Bengals have alot of problems but they NEED to take a RB with their first round pick. I can see Chris Wells or Moreno being selected, but Wells seems to of had some injury questions.
James Walker (1:21 PM)
Cincinnati taking a running back in the first round could be a mistake. Both Wells AND Moreno have injury concerns, so I think the No. 6 pick is too high for either prospect.
Logan (Scranton, PA)
I know everyone thinks the Steelers go OLine in the first BUT do u think they could shock & go WR? Holmes is a budding star, Ward is aging, but still great. Sweed is a ? mark & Washington is a FA.
James Walker (1:24 PM)
The Steelers went high in the draft (second round) to take Limas Sweed last year. They felt he was a steal. I don't see Pittsburgh getting another WR at No. 32. That player wouldn't start next year over Hines Ward or Santonio Holmes.
Kenny (Tulsa, OK)
Hello James. I know everyone is down on my Ravens corner backs, but their depth managed to get them to the championship game. With some more time to polish on their techniques, why not draft a LB for Ray to mentor until he retires? Laurinaitis would be nice project
James Walker (1:27 PM)
The Ravens were one good quarter from the Super Bowl. This is no time to take on "projects" in the first round.
Dave (NJ)
Walk man how are you? Do you think Nicks slip in the second round to my g-men? or do we have to try and nab him earlier with the 1st rounder. Cant forget about luaranitas in the 1st round either? what do you think?
James Walker (1:29 PM)
A lot depends on what Nicks does this week at the combine. He's a big guy, so his workouts may not be off the charts. Right now he's probably a late-first to mid-second round prospect. Check back in a month or two to see if anything changes.
James Walker (1:30 PM)
Ok, everyone. I'm going to pass the torch to Kevin Seifert. The Lions own the top pick, so I'm sure he will get a lot of questions about that. It's all yours, Kevin. -JW
Kevin Seifert (1:32 PM)
Ok, thanks James. Let's focus things on the NFC North here for the next 30 minutes. We can talk draft and/or free agency. Let's get into it.
Zach (DeWitt, MI)
Kevin. Lions fan here. Anyway you see Detroit not taking Matt Stafford with the #1 overall pick?
Kevin Seifert (1:33 PM)
At this early stage, I think there are a lot of reasons to believe the Lions could look elsewhere. The main reason is that their biggest need(s) are along the lines. If another team is really sold on Stafford, you could really build up a nice collection of high picks by trading down.
David (Omaha, Ne)
Hey Kevin, do you see the Lions passing on Stafford and giving Stanton a shot this year? Wouldn?t it be better use of the picks to draft lineman and build a good o-line and a good defense and if needed draft a qb next year to slot in behind a good line and good defense to maximize the chances for success for a young qb?
Kevin Seifert (1:34 PM)
Yeah, I could see them passing on Stafford or trading down. I agree that multiple linemen are a higher priority. But I don't know that Stanton gets the first chance to start if that's the case. Personally, I'd prefer Orlovksy or Culpepper if you're looking for a veteran bridge starter.
Brian (East Lansing, MI)
Could you see the Lions taking the best OT on the board with number one and then hoping Sanchez plummets in the draft and/or try to jump above the Jets to take him?
Kevin Seifert (1:35 PM)
If they like Sanchez, sure. Taking him in the bottom third of the first round might be a decent value.
Jason (Parsippany, NJ)
Will the Vikings trade their first round pick to the Eagles for Donavan McNABB?
Kevin Seifert (1:35 PM)
At this point, there is no indication McNabb is available. I keep waiting to see whether the Eagles will agree to a new contract with him, however. He's requested one.
Raj (NJ)
Kevin, do you think it's a real possibilty that Cassell could be headed to the Vikings?
Kevin Seifert (1:36 PM)
They're on a short list of teams that have the capacity and the need to make what would have to be considered a somewhat risky deal. I think he's a winning quarterback. But would he be worth a high draft pick and a huge contract? I don't know if everyone in the league is sold on Cassel in that light.
Eric - Muskegon Michigan
Kevin, faithful reader here. A lot of mocks have Stafford or an OT going first to the Lions. This is not just a question of the Lions and who they should draft, but correct those mocks because the incorrect first pick trickles down to all other mocks below (not to be compared to trickle-down economics). Set the record straight that the Lions will not take Stafford or a OT. Reasons? They have 3 mediocre qbs to choose from already, and Linehan has already said he likes both tackles for the Lions. These are two of the smaller holes on the roster that can be filled with a quality defensive starter from day one, unlike a qb that may not even start this year, or only be depth on our o-line.
Kevin Seifert (1:38 PM)
Hi Eric. Thanks for the note. The one thing I would dispute is putting too much stock in what Linehan said after a few days on the job. You never know if that's a smoke screen ... or if he'll feel differently once he starts working with these players.
Steve (Iowa City, IA)
Kevin, what do you see the Vikings doing, if anything, this off-season at the qb position? Are they still sold on TJack or will they look elsewhere (Michael Vick)??
Kevin Seifert (1:39 PM)
I think they'll look into Cassel, and if they're smart they'll take a hard look at Garcia.
Greg (Minneapolis, MN)
Saw a quote from Ziggy, sounds like he has "NO interest" in Brett Favre and that he has nothing left to offer, should we completely forget about that ever happening in Minnesota?
Kevin Seifert (1:40 PM)
I didn't see that quote but after last year's tampering issue he has to be careful. I think Favre is about as retired as he could be. There's no doubt he would entertain playing for the Vikings, and vice versa, if he changes his mind this summer.
Anthony (Detroit, MI)
Lions first pick Curry, 20th pick Laurenitis. Thats Curry, Laurenitis, and Simms. Top LB core in the league for years to come what do you think?
Kevin Seifert (1:41 PM)
I can tell you one thing: I know of at least one NFL GM who wasn't happy that your Ohio State guy skipped the Senior Bowl. He's going to get grilled pretty good at the combine. I've followed his career since high school and he's definitely an old-fashioned, tough football player.
daniel: Martinsburg, WV
Is haynesworth a possibility in Detroit?
Kevin Seifert (1:42 PM)
I know people are making that connection because of Jim Schwartz. But I just don't know if the Lions are looking to make that kind of financial and cap commitment to one person. They have too many holes to fill.
John (Minneapolis, MN)
The Vikings need a QB in the draft, but outside of a Ricky Williams-type trade (which no one wants) they won't get Sanchez or Stafford. So is it Josh Freeman or Bust for them?
Kevin Seifert (1:43 PM)
I wouldn't assume they would target a top guy. If you look at the people that have been drafted since Childress joined the team, they've all been develomental type guys: Tarvaris Jackson, Tyler Thigpen and John David Booty. I'm not sure they'll be looking at quarterback high in the draft this year, either.
Jon (CA)
I'm a tortured Lions fan, hoping that Detroit can trade down from the first pick. Which player is most likely to be attractive to a team looking to trade up to #1?
Kevin Seifert (1:44 PM)
The two guys that fit that mold are Andre Smith and Matthew Stafford. I don't see a team trading up to take Crabtree, a receiver, with the first pick.
Carl (Florida)
CAN WE GET A BEARS QUESTION IN HERE?! With the Bears' offensive line losing players (Tait & Brown) where do you see the Bears going in the early rounds?
Kevin Seifert (1:46 PM)
SURE LET'S TALK BEARS. I think it's safe to assume they'll take at least one tackle in the first three rounds. I don't think it will be in the first round, though. The top guys likely will be gone and there might not be someone left who is worthy of going No. 18 overall.
Jesse (Morgantown, WV)
What will the Bears do? Will they draft a playmaker to take some heat off Hester? And will they sign another vet. QB to compete with Orton? What else could they be up for in free agency?
Kevin Seifert (1:47 PM)
Personally, I think it's hard to draft a receiver and hope they'll contribute as a rookie. It doesn't happen often. (See Earl Bennett.) So if the Bears are going to improve their receivers, which they should, free agency is probably a more likely avenue.
Pete (chicago)
Do you think that the bears will try and go after Jeremy Maclin WR/Missouri or Brian Orakpo DE Texas. What do we need more, pash rush or WR. Is there any chance we go for a top QB?
Kevin Seifert (1:48 PM)
As much as I've harped on receivers, I do think a pass-rushing defensive end is more important for the Bears. Will Orakpo be available at No. 18? Possibly. He's another guy who skipped the Senior Bowl.
John (North Carolina)
I think the Lions should get Mark from USC because he has more mobility? What do u think?
Kevin Seifert (1:49 PM)
Sanchez might be a bit more mobile than Stafford, but it's negligible in my opinion. Of more importance is that Sanchez basically was a starter for one season. He has a steep learning curve.
Johnny from Dearborn (MI)
Do you think by Stafford going to the combine will that benefit him in any way??
Kevin Seifert (1:50 PM)
My understanding is that he's not working out, just doing interviews with the teams, etc. That's pretty standard for possible No. 1 picks. He'll save everything for his Pro Day or his individual workout. But it's still important for him to show up at the combine.
Jake (Baltimore)
What do you anticipate the Pack doing this year with their #1? Do you think this could be Ted Thompson's last chance?
Kevin Seifert (1:53 PM)
Everyone's got them taking Jenkins. I think a lot is going to depend on free agency. Even though Thompson isn't a big fan of the free agent market, he needs to shore up his personnel for the 3-4. If they are able to help themselves out at defensive end and linebacker, that'll free up the draft for Jenkins. Otherwise, they might have to look at linebacker/defensive end at No. 9 overall.
Nick (michigan)
Should Green Bay try and trade for Julius Peppers?
Kevin Seifert (1:54 PM)
It would be interesting. But one thing I think some people are missing is that Peppers wants to play OLB in the 3-4, not defensive end. So that's a big adjustmet for him and would give the Packers two former DEs transitioning to OLB with Aaron Kampman. Not saying that keeps it from happening, but it would be something to consider.
Chris (Brooks, MN)
Kevin, what, in your opinion, is the possibility of the Vikings pulling another Jared Allen-type trade for Nnamdi Asomugha?
Kevin Seifert (1:55 PM)
Very, very unlikely. I don't know that they can justify cornerback as being as much of a need as defensive end as last year. Great player, but that's pure gluttony.
Adam (Detroit, MI)
How do you see this next year playing out for the Lions? Assuming they don't completely screw up this draft and take an unproven, underclassman QB with the first pick, is there any chance of them turning it around and even approaching .500?
Kevin Seifert (1:56 PM)
A lot can happen in one year in the NFL. And I agree it will be a lot harder to be 8-8 if they start a rookie quarterback. I like a lot of the staff Jim Schwartz has put together. Now we have to see how quickly they can pull things together.
Tim (Chicago, IL)
Hey Kevin, what do you think about the Bears trading Brian Urlacher for Anquan Boldin and then drafting a linebacker in the first round...perhaps Maualuga or Cushing from USC? Urlacher's on the decline and the Bears desperately need a big time wide reciever.
Kevin Seifert (1:58 PM)
Yeah, I see that David Haugh wrote the Bears should consider that trade. The bigger question is whether the Cardinals would take it. I'd be in favor of it from Chicago's side. You ship out a player on the downside of his career for a player in his prime.
Brett min
do you think the packers should take a offensive linemen in the 1st round and if so who?
Jeff (Seattle, WA)
Seriously, I think you ESPN boys should go all 5 hours w/o answering a single Seahawks question!
Kevin Seifert (1:59 PM)
I'm not sure yet. (Yes, nice definitive answer.) I want to see what shape Chad Clifton is in when the offseason program starts and also see how the Packers address the Mark Tauscher situation. Tauscher is rehabbing his knee and is a free agent. They could probably re-sign him pretty cheaply.
Kevin Seifert (2:00 PM)
OK, thanks everyone. I'm passing this gig off to Pat Yasinskas of NFC South fame.
Pat Yasinskas (2:00 PM)
Kevin, I'll gladly jump in for my turn now. But, Jeff, the bad news is we're going to focus on the NFC South for my 30 minutes. But there is hope on the horizon -- Mike Sando, our NFC West guy, comes on at, I believe, 4 p.m. ET
Jason (Jacksonville, FL)
Hey Pat love the work you do. I am tired of the Peppers stuff just franchise him and trade him but is their any word on progress with Gross?
Pat Yasinskas (2:01 PM)
No word on Gross yet, but I'm sure Panthers are trying real hard to get this one done. Agree with you on Pep -- franchise him and trade him.
Chad (Las Vegas)
Pat, what do the Saints do at 14? Do they take the best D player available, if so who, or do they trade to get more picks than the 4 they have?
Pat Yasinskas (2:02 PM)
If I were the Saints, I'd try to trade down and add a pick or two. They're short on picks and cap space and they need bodies at several spots.
John (Sebring, FL)
Kiper had the Bucs taking Josh Freeman in the first round. Is it just me or is that WAY too early?
Pat Yasinskas (2:03 PM)
I think it's too early. What I know on Freeman is he might be a little raw -- still a good prospect. I seriously think the Bucs go with McCown this year.
Andrew (Charlotte, NC)
Hi Pat, hope you are doing well at espn.com. We miss your great Panther coverage at the Observer. Speaking of the Panthers, what is your analysis/insight on the Julius Peppers situation in Carolina and how it can affect the Panthers drafting needs?
Pat Yasinskas (2:05 PM)
Pep will be gone. Think they franchise and trade him for draft picks. They've got to use one of those picks to get a pass-rushing DE. That might take a little time for him to develop, but they've got to start over at DE.
Drew (San Diego, Ca)
Pat, where is the Charger questions! i just want to know who you see the Bolts taking at #16? I have heard Knowshon Moreno but who do you see them taking?
Pat Yasinskas (2:05 PM)
NFC South for right now. Sorry.
Greg (Cleveland)
Thanks for the chat. Do you think the Bucs would franchise Bryant if they can't get a long-term deal worked out this week?
Pat Yasinskas (2:06 PM)
I think that's entirely possible. Also think you could see a deal reached before it comes to that.
joe (SLC, UT)
Pat, I'm fine with the nfc south but please post what a trader Tim from chicago is for even hinting at trading urlacher. he should be ashamed. BEAR DOWN!
Pat Yasinskas (2:07 PM)
There. It's posted. Back to the NFC South.
Max (Gainesville, FL)
Hey Pat, Will the bucs bring in another qb to compete with McCown?
Pat Yasinskas (2:07 PM)
Still entirely possible, but I think McCown at least gets a fair shot to win the job.
Andrew (Columbus, OH)
Hey Pat. I was wondering what you think the Falcons should do with Michael Vick. It looks like nobody wants him right now, but do you think someone will trade for him?
Pat Yasinskas (2:08 PM)
Try like heck to get a draft pick for him, but that's going to be tough. If not, release him as soon as he's reinstated and just move on.
Charles (Charlotte, NC)
What do you think are the Atlanta Falcons greatest needs? I believe its tight end or a pass rush specialist to either play across from John Abraham or take his spot once he retires. Maybe Brandon Pettigrew or Larry English? Either one of the players would be great value at a late first round spot.
Pat Yasinskas (2:10 PM)
Could see the DE as a possibility. Not a TE in first round though. Check Falcons mailbag on my blog for my reasoning. Could also see them going LB or DB early in draft.
Corey (Chicago)
Pat, please assess the Buc's RB situation. Will Dunn return? Is Graham the answer? What about Cadillac? Should they address the position early in the draft?
Pat Yasinskas (2:11 PM)
Graham is the only sure thing for next year and I think they need to get someone to go with him. Not sure how much Dunn has left and don't know if we'll ever see Caddy again.
Dylan (ME)
Hey Pat, what do you think the Saints need to get first, a LB or a Defensive Back?
Pat Yasinskas (2:12 PM)
DB. Get a couple of them. LB situation ain't bad. I think Dan Morgan helps a lot. Vilma should re-sign and let Shanle and Fujita compete for the other spot.
John New Orleans
Vilma?
Pat Yasinskas (2:12 PM)
Think you'll see him re-sign with Saints soon after free agency starts.
Adam (Columbus, OH)
Will Tampa Bay address they're QB needs after releasing Garcia via the trade or Free Agency? Any chance Leftwich is a starting QB in florida again?
Pat Yasinskas (2:14 PM)
Not in Tampa Bay. Think they want to go young.
Devin NY
Hey Pat, give me a realistic idea of who the Bucs will be a major player for in free agency. I wanna see some big names in pewter and red this year!
Pat Yasinskas (2:15 PM)
Yes, they've got the money to do it. Think you'll see them go after some big-name WRs. You also could see them as players for the big DL guys.
Joe (Philadelphia)
Will Carolina consider looking at QB options like Derek Anderson in light of Jake Delhomme's performance in the playoffs? Not many players bounce back from that kind of performance. Plus, he was only average at best during the regular season.
Pat Yasinskas (2:16 PM)
I would, if I were in their shoes. Think you've got to have something in place as alternative if Jake starts next year like he finished this past one.
Fred (Michigan)
Is Matt Cassel a possibility in Tampa Bay?
Pat Yasinskas (2:17 PM)
Sincerely doubt it. Think the new regime wants to keep its draft picks.
Jasper (Sacramento, CA)
Who do you see Atlanta getting with their first two picks? I've heard that they might take Brandon Pettigrew in the first round, but I've also heard that they could take Chase Coffman in the second. Personally, I like Coffman more, and I feel that they could address another need with their first-round pick.
Pat Yasinskas (2:18 PM)
Again, I don't see them drafting TE in first round. Bigger needs on defense. Mularkey's not going to change the offense to throw a TE 80 passes a season. They do need to get a pass catcher, but it doesn't have to be a Tony Gonzalez/Antonio Gates kind of guy. Just somebody that can give them something like 30 catches a season.
Bryan (Charlotte, NC)
What do you foresee the Panthers doing with guys like Lucas and Hackett? Do you think Delhomme will restructure?
Pat Yasinskas (2:19 PM)
I think Lucas and Hackett will be gone soon. Yeah, they can restructure Delhomme real easily.
Zac (MN)
What day do the Panthers have to sign Gross before he can negotiate with other teams?
Pat Yasinskas (2:20 PM)
Feb. 27 is start of free agency. Deadline for franchise tag is Feb. 19.
Andrew (York, PA)
Isn't Lance Moore a free agent in NO? If he does not resign with the saints, who can you see filling the void down there opposite to Colston?
Pat Yasinskas (2:21 PM)
Restricted free agent. There's a big difference there.
Corey (Chicago)
With the Buc's $40 Mil in cap room and new, beautiful facilities along with a young, african american coach - will they be the destination of choice for free agents this year?
Pat Yasinskas (2:21 PM)
Yes and throw in no state income tax in Florida. That's a huge deal to players.
Sam (Atlanta)
How do you think the Falcons will make the run defense better in the off season?
Pat Yasinskas (2:22 PM)
Get a big DT to take Grady's place and a couple of fast LBs.
Caleb (Palm Beach Gardens Florida)
Broking/ Milloy, staying or leaving?
Pat Yasinskas (2:22 PM)
I say they end up keeping one. My guess is Milloy ends up staying.
Eric (Sioux City)
Gross should have to give Peppers a percentage of his signing bonus for providing him with leverage in his negotiations.
Pat Yasinskas (2:23 PM)
Agreed.
Ran (New York)
Hey Pat. Is there any chance that the Falcons go after Nnamdi (if he isn't franchised) or after Albert Haynseworth?
Pat Yasinskas (2:24 PM)
I just don't think the Falcons are going after the big guys in free agency this year. They want to build through the draft. You'll see some mid-level free agents, but I don't think anybody major.
Victor (Burlington, NC)
What position will the Buc's fill with their #1 pick this year? Please dont say the QB out of Kansas.
Pat Yasinskas (2:25 PM)
No, I don't think they go QB first round. Lot depends on how things sort out in front of them, but I'd say DE, DT or maybe even a left tackle.
Michael Scott: (Scranton, PA):
Do you see the NFL changing the rookie salary scale anytime soon?
Pat Yasinskas (2:26 PM)
They'll try to do that if they can get a new CBA. Love your hometown -- grew up right up the road from there.
Jody (Hammond, LA)
I keep hearing rumors of Mike Mckenzie being moved to saftey. That leaves us with promising young Tracy Porter at CB. Do we draft another corner to eventually take over the other side?
Pat Yasinskas (2:27 PM)
Go get another CB. And don't count on McKenzie. This is second major knee injury for him and he's getting up there. Got to get a safety, too.
Dwayne Shrute (Scranton, PA)
Hey, me too, Pat! Us PA boys gotta stick together. Just a shout out to say great job!
Pat Yasinskas (2:28 PM)
Thanks. Say hello to all my friends in Steamtown. I'll be up for a visit when the weather is warmer. That's it. It's my turn to pass the torch to our next chatter. Thanks. Enjoyed it.
Juan (Corona,CA)
Hey Bill, which player would you select if you had the Raiders #7 pick?
Pat Yasinskas (2:33 PM)
I'd probably take one of the left tackles who emerge. Crabtree would be very, very tempting but the Raiders need a standout left tackle to build the offense around.
Peter (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL)
Hey Bill, what do you see the Chargers doing with their first pick? I have heard RB (Wells, Moreno) is a possibility, but i think they need to go with a D or O lineman. With Jamal Williams getting older and Olshansky not coming back, there is a definate need there. The right side of the O line could also use an upgrade.
Bill Williamson (2:35 PM)
If the Chargers redo LaDainian Tomlinson's contract and franchise Darren Sproles, I don't see them getting a running back in the early rounds. I'd think the Chargers would look at a linebacker in the first round under that circumstance.
Luis Holland, Mi
Hey Bill,If the eagles don't draft a tackle at 21 and 28 who do they draft? Brandon Pettigrew?
Bill Williamson (2:36 PM)
Pettigrew would be very tempting for the Eagles. he'd be a nice weapon there.
Matt (Chicago)
**General Question Alert** Can you please help me. Why would any team trade for the rights to Mike Vick knowing the Falcons are going to cut him anyway?
Bill Williamson (2:36 PM)
You are right. No one is going to trade for this guy.
Joe ( Florida )
What team has the most use for Percy Harvin? Considering he is such a dynamic football player?
Bill Williamson (2:37 PM)
Many teams would love him. Chicago and Philly are possibilities.
Chad (Pittsburgh,Pa)
If Michael Crabtree is taken before the 7th pick, who do you think the Raiders would go after?
Bill Williamson (2:38 PM)
Probably a left tackle. That is a big need.
Clay (San Diego)
Franchising Sproles would be very expensive, do you think that kind of money is out there for him on the free agent market?
Bill Williamson (2:39 PM)
It is very pricey but he is a triple threat. He can run the ball, catch the ball and he is a nasty return man. The Chargers would really miss him if he left.
Saul Garcia, San Diego
Let's be real Bill, with Al Davis in charge of the Raiders there is always a chance of them trading for Vick (even despite the fact they know he will get cut)
Bill Williamson (2:39 PM)
That would be a new low.
Schon (Walnut Creek, CA)
Bill, as a Raider fan all my life I am having a tough time saying this, but do you think that it may be in the Raiders best interest to franchise Asomugha and look for a trading partner? Would any teams be interested. Back-up guys like Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt played well in his absence against the Bucs! Thanks
Bill Williamson (2:41 PM)
Look, the Chiefs traded Jared Allen and they got a lot for him but they took a step backwards. The key of this entire deal is to get superstar players. Asomugha is a superstar so why mess with that? It'd be tough for Oakland to deal him.
steve (Nashua, NH)
What is the most likely scenario for Cassel this season?
Bill Williamson (2:43 PM)
I think he will be traded. Not everyone is with me on this one, but I don't see the Patriots paying two quarterbacks huge dollars. He'd command a lot in a trade and I think the Patriots will end up dealing him.
San Diego, CA
What is your take on the year Cromartie had, after his 2007 break out year. Is he the real deal, or was it just a fluke?
Bill Williamson (2:44 PM)
Jury is still out. He really struggled in 2008. He has a lot to prove. Having Merriman come back should help him.
Charles-brooklyn ny
HEY BILL DO YOU SEE ANY WAY MARK SANCHEZ GOES TO THE JETS AT #17 ??
Bill Williamson (2:46 PM)
Yes, I see that being a real possibility. Quarterbacks have often slipped during the draft and it could very well happen. I'd have to think Sanchez would be jumped on by the Jets.
Nick (Valencia, CA)
**Chiefs Question** Dwayne Bowe, Tony Gonzalez, Michael Crabtree???
Bill Williamson (2:48 PM)
Crabtree would make that offense very dangerous and if Thigpen was kept, he'd have a lot of weapons to help his development. Crabtree would be intriguing at No. 3 for Kansas City.
Justin (muncie, in)
Bill, Where do you see QB Nate Davis ending up in the draft? He had a great season tearing up every defense he played but then had those 2 horrible games in the MAC championship and the GMAC Bowl. Thanks alot!
Bill Williamson (2:49 PM)
Maybe early in the second round. Maybe the Chiefs would show interest in him or perhaps a team like Chicago or Minneosta. He is a very intriguing talent who needs to develop some more.
Brian (Fort Collins, CO)
Other than DT, who do you see the Broncos targeting on Day 1?
Bill Williamson (2:51 PM)
Linebacker, safety, defensive end and maybe a cornerback Yes, the Broncos will be defense heavy in the draft.
Benny (NY)
++Later Round Question - Is Graham Harrell a good fit as a backup in Dallas, NO, or Denver? Learning the position (ie. Cassell) and waiting for a chance. I think he would make a solid backup in case of injury after a few years of learning and maturity.
Bill Williamson (2:52 PM)
I'd think Harrell would be a good fit in the mid rounds for many teams. He could really help himself with a good combine and a good pro day, He's definitely a player to watch in the next week.
Albert (Florida)
Do you think Aaron Curry will be available ay #5 when the Browns pick? If he isn't who do you think they will pick?
Bill Williamson (2:54 PM)
The Browns will have to cross their fingers he doesn't go to Kansas City at No. 3 or No. 4 by Seattle. He'd fit in on all three teams. He is surely a top-five pick,
Chris (GA)
Do you see the Falcons going after a LB such as Brian Cushing with Brooking getting older, or some sort of DB?
Bill Williamson (2:55 PM)
They will have needs at both spots. Cushing would be a nice fit in Atlanta.
Vinnie (NH)
Bill, any chance the Jets grab Maualuga?
Bill Williamson (2:55 PM)
I think he'll be gone by No. 17. The Broncos, at No. 12, and San Diego, at No. 16, are good fits for the USC star middle linebacker.
Dustin (Seattle, WA)
Bill, What will the Seahawks do at four? Crabtree? Or will this be another Ruskell flop?
Bill Williamson (2:57 PM)
I think they should take Crabtree. The Seahawks took a fast dive last season and a big reason why injuries at reciever. They should throw Hasselbeck and give him a star to play with in the latter years of his career.
Darryl (Oakland, CA)
I point to when the Broncos had Tom Nalen in his prime. When the best Lineman in the draft is a center, Alex Mack, why are teams not high on him? I look at the NFL and teams with the best running games generally have very good centers, why is he not being considered a lock for the first round?
Bill Williamson (2:59 PM)
I think teams really like Mack. He will likely be a late first-rounder or an early secoond rounder. Watch for Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Miami and Jacksonville to be among the teams that seriously consider him.
SAnchez california
Do you think the Raiders have to trade up to get Michael Crabtree?
Bill Williamson (3:00 PM)
If he gets by Seattle at No. 4, Oakland could be safe if it wants Crabtree.
Bill Williamson (3:00 PM)
That's it for me. Thanks, everyone. BW.
Mac (San Francisco)
What chance do the Jets have to get Mark Sanchez?
Tim Graham (3:03 PM)
If Sanchez falls to the No. 17 pick, where the Jets are, they will have a difficult time passing him up. Josh Freeman they might have to think harder about, but if Sanchez falls there, I'd be surprised if the Jets don't snag him.
DJ PA
Tim, How much more value does Matt Cassel have than say Derek Anderson on the trading market...Both QBs failed to get their teams to the playoffs
Tim Graham (3:05 PM)
Cassel has much more value. ... but Anderson will be easier to obtain and could be the better fit for some teams' needs. Cassel will require an awful lot of assets coming the other way.
john boston
what will the patriots do in the draft
Tim Graham (3:07 PM)
Not that have any inside info from the Patriots draft room (who does?) but linebacker appears to be a likely position. Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews Jr. or Clint Sintim are possibilities.
DOLFAN (Sunny Miami)
Do you think Parcells will try to sign Asomoghua and can the Fins win the division again?
Tim Graham (3:08 PM)
They might try to sign him, but that bidding war will be obscene if the Raiders don't franchise him. That will be one of -- if not THE -- most interesting free-agency situation this year.
Tim Graham (3:09 PM)
Sure, the Dolphins can win the AFC East again. But their schedule is the toughest in the NFL. Fortunately for them, everybody else in the AFC East has a road almost as tough.
Tom Slate Hill, NY
Where do you see Laurinaitis going and will he become a solid pro LB?
Tim Graham (3:10 PM)
I like Laurinaitis a lot. Had he come out last year he could have been a top-five pick. Him returning for another year might have hurt his stock because he didn't progress as much as many scouts thought he should've, but he can be a special linebacker. He could end up with the Patriots or Dolphins.
Joe Columbia, MO
A lot of people have Crabtree and Maclin as the top two receivers in the draft. I think Maclin's versatility makes him the better choice. Who do you think goes first Crabtree or Maclin?
Tim Graham (3:12 PM)
Great question. I think it depends on which team gets to pull that trigger first. I'm starting to hear Maclin is pulling ahead on some teams' draft boards. We'll see how Crabtree's decision not to run the 40 affects him. If Maclin turns in a great time, he could capture the buzz.
Chris (NJ)
What do you think about Brett Ratliff? Some experts are high on him but lets be honest he was an undrafted fa
Tim Graham (3:13 PM)
It's hard to know unless you attended Jets practices or have seen the films from them. He's intriguing because the last we saw him he was torching defenses in the preseason.
Frank Brooklyn, NY
Fins question: Safety and CB were identified as glaring needs, who would they target in the 1st three rounds?
Tim Graham (3:15 PM)
Much of that will depend on how free agency goes. Both of their safeties, Yeremiah Bell and Renaldo Hill, are up. So is starting corner Andre Goodman. It seems they're ready to part with Channing Crowder, so linebacker looks like a need. The front office also has placed a priority on finding a center. So Max Unger or Alex Mack could be targeted late int he first or with their early second-rounder.
Scott (NY)
Do you see the jets going with a CB in the first or second round.
Tim Graham (3:17 PM)
I do. That's a big need for them. It's a shame they have so much talent in cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Kerry Rhodes but still were so bad in pass defense. They need another good corner.
Zac (MN)
Hey Tim, if the Pats don't trade Cassel before the draft, would they take a #1 next year for him (assuming Brady is healthy)?
Tim Graham (3:19 PM)
I think once they're certain Brady is healthy, they will take the best offer on the table to rid themselves of that $14.65 million salary.
Tim (La Crosse, WI)
Are the Dolphins looking for a big reciever in the draft such as Heyward-Bey?
Tim Graham (3:20 PM)
I'm not sure how much emphasis the Dolphins are placing on a first-day receiver. Chad Pennington's style allows him to make do with undrafted possession guys like Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess. Receiver is a need, and if Chad Henne were the quarterback the Dolphins might think differently. But with Pennington, it's not as much of a concern.
Boo: Greenville, SC
If hes there, do you see the Jets selecting Josh Freeman? If not who can you see them taking?
Tim Graham (3:22 PM)
As mentioned earlier, I'm sure they'll look at Freeman. Whether he's worth the 17th pick, I don't know. But the Jets have a lot of needs: cornerback, linebacker, receiver.
jo lockport NY
what names to you see the bills looking at in FA and in the draft
Tim Graham (3:24 PM)
The Bills can go any number of directions at No. 11. They have needs all over the place. Most mockers have them taking Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew, but where they need the most help is on the pass rush. Everette Brown and Brian Orakpo are possibilities. The Bills also need a center and, after what we learned Sunday about Marshawn Lynch, they might be looking harder at running backs than they would have.
Jack (Toronto)
General question: How scary would Michael Vick be in the Wildcat formation (assuming he didn't pack on 50 pounds in the slammer)?
Tim Graham (3:25 PM)
Vick will leave prison with the same arm he went in there with.
Tim (Toronto, Ontario)
Hey Tim, Tim here too! Haven't seen many Jets questions here so thought I'd throw one out: Now that Brett has Jetted, who do you see as his replacement, both short and long-term? I've heard a lot of chatter that the Jets are high on Ratliff but not so much on Clemens, and also the possibility of drafting Sanchez #17. Who do you ultimately see lining up behind center for Gang Green when the season rolls around?
Tim Graham (3:26 PM)
This is so up in the air. I hate to venture a guess. My prediction, however, is that the opening day starter is not on the roster.
Zack (Miami)
What happened to james Laurinitis? Why is his stock falling so much? Do the dolphins pick him if crowder leaves?
Tim Graham (3:28 PM)
He could end up with the Dolphins. His stock dipped because of expectations. When you come back for your senior year after a great junior season, people want to see mind-blowing plays on every series. Plus, other linebackers garnered their share of attention, closing the gap and, in some case, drawing even. He still projects as a fine NFL player.
Steve(NY)
whos better for the jets, percy harvin, or mark sanchez
Tim Graham (3:29 PM)
Sanchez. I'm not a big fan of Harvin as a high draft pick because of his injury history. The guy was always hurt. Even when Harvin played he was banged up.
Ben: Jacksonville, NC
Though Parcells hasn't been a big pursuer of free agents in the past, do you see the dolphins going after any big names in the offseason (i.e.) Boldin, Peppers, Burress (he loves big recievers)?
Tim Graham (3:30 PM)
He didn't love the big receivers too much last year. The only one they had was Ernest Wilford, and he watched in street clothes last year.
Tim Graham (3:31 PM)
OK, folks. That's my time. Enjoy the witty observations of Paul Kuharsky
Ren (Lehighton Pa)
Is there any chance of Jacksonville grabbing Michael Crabstree by staying at 8, or even possibly trading up?
Paul Kuharsky (3:33 PM)
No way at No. 8. They sure could use him, but they should wind up with a good lineman where they are...
Dan (Indianapolis)
I've heard rumours that Hayesworth was in town and was checking out the town etc.. Is there any truth in that?
Paul Kuharsky (3:33 PM)
He's been there before... The Colts can't get anywhere near the ballpark financially it'll take to sign Haynesworth...
Jeffery (Baltimore, MD)
Should the Texans re-sign Dunta Robinson? I've heard arguments from both sides... im not really sure he's worth the money
Paul Kuharsky (3:34 PM)
If they feel good about his leg, absolutely. Don't sign him, and you create another need, and they have too many as it is. He was pretty good and I've heard it said he was really only 80 percent. Has a lot of leadership value too...
Eric, Iowa City
why hasnt tennessee seem to do anything to get hanesworth back, he was CLEARLY their best player and who do you see them takin in the draft? harvin?
Paul Kuharsky (3:35 PM)
We don't know what's going on behind the scenes. They could be making an offer. It would be a huge shock if they went wide receiver in the first round...
Rob in Reno, Nevada
Paul, what are the Jaguars primary need going into this draft?
Paul Kuharsky (3:37 PM)
Left tackle, defensive tackle, cornerback and, as always, receiver...
Andy (Indianapolis, IN)
do you see the colts drafing a wide receiver early to replace marvin harrison, or will they count on all their draft picks from last year to fill the void, assuming marving doesn't come back
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
I could definitely see them going WR again. They cannot have too many weapons and even if you think of Gonzalez as Harrison's "replacement," then you need to replace Gonzalez...
Matt , Nashville
Who do you see tennessee going for in the draft?
Paul Kuharsky (3:39 PM)
I think they will be in a positon to take the best player available, which is a good situation in their spot. They landed Bulluck like that...
Paul Kuharsky (3:39 PM)
Leaning heavily AFC South until 4:00 ET folks...
Jason ( North Bergen, NJ)
Who do you believe the Colts will pick with their first round pick? I would like to see them pick Darrius Heyward-Bey. They can get a good Defensive tackle in the second round.
Paul Kuharsky (3:41 PM)
More likely WR than DT. I will write a bit about their history at DT in the next few days, but they don't draft them, certainly not high. Big need, but I think they expect they can fill it well outside of the first round...
Brian (Houston, TX)
If you're leaning AFC South, then answer a Texans question. What are their needs?
Paul Kuharsky (3:41 PM)
Safety, defensive end, cornerback...
Adan (Victorville CA)
Who will be the qb for the titans next year?
Paul Kuharsky (3:42 PM)
I still feel like it will be Collins...
Jordy (Boston)
The Texans trade down, right?
Paul Kuharsky (3:42 PM)
Easier said than done and certainly depends on who is there. But more picks would help the cause for sure considering the help they need, particularly on defense...
Bill (Ft. Campbell, Ky)
What does it take to get a question answer on here? What are the Jags offseason plans with regards to free agents?
Paul Kuharsky (3:43 PM)
They will do very little. Look for them to target guys with upside who aren't highly coveted. They bombed badly last year and will steer away from any sort of big money names...
Dennis (RI)
With the recent release of Fred Taylor, do you see the Jags drafting a RB in the first 3 rounds? If so, then who and in which round?
Paul Kuharsky (3:45 PM)
Good question. I don't have a great sense of what they think of Chauncey Washington. I do think they need to and intend to pair MJD with someone...
Chris Johnson
How could anyone contain our speed if we had me and harvin?
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
That's the reason so many people are putting you with them. But why give the Titans a WR in the first round when they consistently don't go that way and have said they don't put a high value on the spot?
Bill (Ft. Campbell, Ky)
Paul Thanks for answering my question and I enjoy listening to you once a week on 104.5 THE ZONE. GO JAGS!!!!
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
You are missing two other great appearances! Tue.-Thurs.-Fri....
Nick (Memphis)
If the Titans lose Haynesworth than who do you see them drafting in the first round?
Paul Kuharsky (3:47 PM)
I don't think losing AH will prompt them to automatically go DT in the first. Jones would start with Brown, then they might want a guy to compete for the third spot...
Marc (HI)
Do you think Crabtree is as good as people think? and will the raiders draft him if hes still avalible?
Paul Kuharsky (3:48 PM)
I'd like him on my team. Don't know yet if he's viewed like Calvin Johnson was coming out...
Charles (Jax)
Any chance Fred Taylor fills the Ahman Green role on the Texans? I'd hate to play him twice a year.
Paul Kuharsky (3:50 PM)
I don't think Fred fits what Gibbs does. He's not a one-cut-and-go type. Will be very interesting to see where he gets a chance and what they ask him to try to do...
Chris in Chicago
Paul, If you were The Bears GM Jerry Angelo, would you try and draft a QB in this years draft to compete with Orton or do you completely ignore the position in the draft because Orton is doing a fine job?
Paul Kuharsky (3:51 PM)
I'd give myself as many quality options at the most important position as possible. But I don't know that they think that way....
Nate Spokane, WA
If Reggie Williams doesn't stay in Jacksonville do you see very many teams interested in him?
Paul Kuharsky (3:53 PM)
He isn't wanted back. Someone will take a shot and hope he can turn it around. Probably not in the first or even second wave though...
100Q (Better than the game)
question 50....where do you see Indy going in the second round
Paul Kuharsky (3:54 PM)
They are very much a best player available team. I just talked to Polian this morning and he emphasized that. So predicting where they go in the second round based on need is kind of futile...
Josh (Nashville)
Who has the better WR core....JAgs or Titans?
Paul Kuharsky (3:55 PM)
Put them both together and you still have a major need. But a lot of guys who can average 10 yards...
Jonathan (Jacksonville, FL)
In your opinion, will Fred Taylor eventually make the Hall-of-Fame?
Paul Kuharsky (3:55 PM)
I think he will have an excellent case, I really do...
Mo Tim, NY
I am a big Titans fan and think they should be drafting a QB in the first or second round. Do you think they still think Vince Young is a viable QB in the future?
Paul Kuharsky (3:57 PM)
I don't think they think he's viable (though he gets at least one more chance to prove them wrong) and I definitely don't think they draft a QB high...
Brian (Houston, TX)
Hey, Homer! Enough about the Jags! Who do the Texans take at 15?
Paul Kuharsky (3:59 PM)
Caught me, I am a Jaguars homer, raised in NJ and living in Nashville. I can't believe I've been busted! Maybe Jags fans have asked good questions? I think Houston is unlucky there isn't a top safety for them at 15. Depends what's left at CB and DE or maybe Cushing as a value there from what I've read, seen and heard...
Jeff (Nashville, TN)
What do you think was the breaking point for the Titans & Young? Was it the sideline/emotional antics or just plain lack of on the field performance?
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
Lack of progress in the maturity department...
Paul Kuharsky (4:01 PM)
Looks like it's time for Blogger of the Year Mike Sando to take you to the NFC West. Thanks for the good questions. Talk to you from Indy...
Elizabeth (Tucson, AZ)
What are your thoughts on the Cardinals? Who do they need to get them to the playoffs again next season?
Mike Sando (4:04 PM)
They should improve depth and starting quality on the offensive line, in my view. They should try to find a more consistent tight end. They will need help on defense if Antonio Smith leaves, as is widely expected. And then let's see what kind of scheme commitments they make on defense. If they go 3-4 all the way, they need to target the right mid-level free agents.
Matt (Jacksonville,FL)
if Seattle passes on Crabtree, what about Jacksonville trading up over Oakland to get him?
Mike Sando (4:06 PM)
The Jaguars need to get something right at receiver here. That type of move would be more realistic than a lot of other talked-about moves, just because the Raiders and Jaguars are picking in the same range.
Matt - LA
Hey Mike, great work all year. What is your feeling on what the asking price for Boldin if the Cards decide to trade him? How many picks, etc.?
Mike Sando (4:07 PM)
I would guess that it would be at least a first and a third, but some of that would depend upon where those picks fell in the round. I just think you don't make that move unless you get a great package in return. I would frankly ask for more than that, probably.
Shawn (Nashville, TN)
Who do you think will come out better in this years draft from the West? I do feel like most of the West is in a rebuilding mode.
Mike Sando (4:08 PM)
The Rams quietly did a pretty good job in the draft a year ago. Billy Devaney was taking over the draft. Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton showed some things. Justin King's toe injury really hurt that class, but I'm interested to see how Devaney fares now that he's working with his own head coach.
Don (Green Island, NY)
Jags can't draft another slow reciever in the first round, please. No... Will any of the big name possible free agents actually make it to free agency without being franchised?
Mike Sando (4:10 PM)
There simply aren't very many true free-agent receivers of note. The list pretty much starts and ends with T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
Don (Green Island, Ny)
Why is Aaron Curry the top LB prospect on the outsude when Ray Mauluaga is an absolute beast on the inside?
Mike Sando (4:10 PM)
People tend to pay more for pass rushers, and pass rushers tend to work from the outside. Although the 49ers fared pretty well taking Patrick Willis as an ILB.
Steven (Boise, ID)
Todd McShay projects the San Francisco 49ers to pick Jeremy Maclin at No. 10. I'm not convinced that WR is the 49ers most glaring need (I think they could go with another OT or another linebacker and make themselves the kind of hard nosed team it appears Mike Singletary wants them to be). What do you think is the 49ers biggest need, and what do you think they'll do with No. 10 pick?
Mike Sando (4:13 PM)
The biggest need is always quarterback when you haven't named the starter. At least that is how I see things. If you do not have a franchise QB and you have a chance to draft one, I think you consider that option. Pass rusher is probably the top need. I would put OT up there. WR is a need, but have you looked at how poorly teams have fared drafting receivers from seventh to 10th overall in recent years? It is downright ugly.
Sam (Seattle)
Would Jason Smith be a solid pick for Seattle-being WJ's replacement in a couple years?
Mike Sando (4:15 PM)
This is an intriguing question now that the Seahawks appear ready to install more zone schemes. When I think of the zone running game, I do not think of the prototypical athlete at left tackle. In theory, though, yes, the Seahawks should prepare for life after Walter Jones.
Steven (Boise, ID)
With that said, who do you think is the best pass rusher or who's their (San Francisco's) guy at No. 10? Or would they be better off trading down and securing more draft picks?
Mike Sando (4:17 PM)
If you are the 49ers or any team picking 10th, you are thinking this will be your last time picking that high for a while. I think you try to maximize the value, particularly if one of those pass-rushing linebackers is there.
Levin (Indiana)
Well I read Scot McCloughan's mailbag from a month or so ago and he said if a great pass rusher is on the board he promises that is who the 49ers will select. So the question becomes is Orakpo or Everette Brown considered a dominant pass rusher by the 49ers cause if so one of them (and Maybin) will be available.
Mike Sando (4:18 PM)
Rob Rang of NFL Draft Scout has been pretty sharp in anticipating NFC West choices. He had Aaron Curry lasting til the ninth pick in his recent mock, so perhaps the 49ers can still find a pass rusher there.
Jim (Phoenix)
If the Cardinals do trade Boldin away, do you think signing T.J. Houshmandzadeh would be a good way to go?
Mike Sando (4:19 PM)
No, I think the money would be better spent elsewhere. They already have Larry Fitzgerald. Steve Breaston had a huge season. Early Doucet was a third-round pick. Houshmandzadeh will probably be looking for a spot where he can be the No. 1 guy, anyway.
Peter (Nashville)
Who do you see the titans drafting or picking up in free agency. In order to maintain an NFC West related comment, will they try to trade for Boldin?
Mike Sando (4:21 PM)
I like your tactics. Good use of the NFC West reference. It worked. I think Tennessee would be the PERFECT team to consider making a move for Boldin. One, Boldin is a tough, physical receiver. He blocks well. He would fit with the Titans' rugged reputation. Two, Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt was with the Seahawks when Boldin was breaking into the league. He would be very familiar with Boldin.
Kevin (Tucson, AZ)
Where do you see the Cardinal's secondary next season? I think Matt Ware, Green and Hood all need revamping and perhaps another pick. As we've seen, Bill Davis had some problems in San Fran with that passing game.
Mike Sando (4:24 PM)
I would keep Rod Hood. He would be a good third corner, probably. Ware is more of a special-teams guy. I think the Cardinals need to improve their secondary after the top three guys.
Jake (St. Louis)
Memo to Mike Sando -- The NFC West consists of the the Cardinals, Seahawks, 49ers and RAMS. That's right, the RAMS also play in the division you purport to cover!
Mike Sando (4:25 PM)
We are so glad you stopped by and we hope more Rams fans frequent the blog. I have sensed more Rams interest. In fact, Rams questions dominated our most recent chat. I just went through and started looking at every player drafted since 1990 by a team featuring Billy Devaney as a personnel man. Can't wait to dive into the information more thoroughly and hope you're around when we discuss it.
PaulieP (Scottsdale)
Jake in STL, I've watched the Rams the last few years, to say that they "play in the division" is really being generous...
Mike Sando (4:26 PM)
It's nice to see some banter involving Rams fans.
David (Renton, Wa)
Yeah one lame question about Jason Smith is all we get common. I just want to hear something about what direction the seahawks are leaning toward in either the draft or FA!
Mike Sando (4:28 PM)
I think the Seahawks are leaning toward relying on their coaches. That is the vibe I get. I haven't gotten the idea that the Seahawks are going to open the vault in free agency. When you think about it, they were pretty reserved in free agency a year ago. Tim Ruskell is a draft guy. Ruskell and Jim Mora think they've put together a staff that will get more from the existing players, including quite a few draft choices brought aboard by Ruskell, Ruston Webster and the current personnel group.
Reuben (Seattle, WA)
Any chance that the Seahawks trade down from the #4 pick and possibly getting another first round pick?
Mike Sando (4:28 PM)
Any chance? Sure. Likely? Not so sure. We rarely see teams trade into the top five from lower in the round. It last happened in 1999, as I recall.
Jake (St. Louis)
Love the comments from Arizona -- a proud football tradition since November...
Mike Sando (4:29 PM)
Now you're talking, Jake.
Franco (Ottawa, Ontario)
What would you guys think of Micheal Vick in the wildcat spread offence in K.C.?
Mike Sando (4:30 PM)
Wow, could you imagine a bigger adjustment for Todd Haley? He would go from coaching Kurt Warner, who is barely mobile enough to hand off from under center, to one of the most mobile quarterbacks in NFL history. I'm thinking Scott Pioli probably has other plans.
Mike (oregon)
Has there been any news about Marcus Tubbs? And will the Hawks actually take Raji at #4?
Mike Sando (4:31 PM)
The Seahawks do want DT help. They weren't willing to wait for Tubbs' recovery last season. Remember, the current personnel people in Seattle inherited Tubbs from the previous regime. I'd be a surprised if the Seahawks brought him back at this point. I haven't heard anything about a Tubbs comeback. The Seahawks miss him.
Rob in Reno, Nevada
Mike, what is it going to cost to acquire BOldin this off season?
Mike Sando (4:32 PM)
The Cardinals have not told me, but I'm thinking it starts with a first-round choice and additional picks.
Jordan (olympia,WA)
What is the NFC West going to have to do to get respect? Two out of the last four super bowls. Not bad for being classified every year by the so called experts on ESPN as the weakest div. in sports.
Mike Sando (4:33 PM)
The NFC West is easily one of the top eight divisions.
Kyle (San Jose, CA)
there were rumors that the 49ers might be interested in vick if he is released. would this have any influence on the way they draft this year?
Mike Sando (4:33 PM)
I think those rumors were pretty weak. The 49ers were interviewing coaching candidates who had worked with Vick -- Dan Reeves among them -- but there was nothing to the rumors.
Tony (Allentown,PA)
Hey Mike, there has been rumors about the 49ers possibly being interested in Jeff Garcia. Do you think that is a serious possibility?
Mike Sando (4:34 PM)
My understanding was that they had some interest in him last season, but they didn't want to unnerve J.T. O'Sullivan.
Chris (Arroyo Grande, CA)
Rams fan here! After selecting a OT in the first round. What positions or players do you have the Rams seeking with their other picks?
Mike Sando (4:36 PM)
How many times has one of Billy Devaney's teams taken an offensive lineman in the first round? I went back to 1990 and I'm thinking it happened once, with the 49ers taking Kwame Harris. I have to double-check that, but that was my first impression in looking at the data. The Rams will certainly address their offensive line and I think they'll strongly consider one with that second pick. They might need to hit the OL again later in the draft. And then I think they'll want to get bigger in the middle of their defense.
Sarah (Denver)
What are the odds that the Rams grab Crabtree even with some great OTs on the board?
Mike Sando (4:38 PM)
They were the first team to draft a wide receiver last season, so you never know. But I tend to think they'll go in another direction that early.
Nate (Spokane, WA)
What are the chances of Leroy Hill being signed long term and not franchised this season?
Mike Sando (4:39 PM)
The Seahawks seemed undecided on how to proceed. For that reason, I'm not sure they would want to commit that much money long term just yet. That is more a feeling than anything. The team was undecided, last I knew.
Jeff (Seattle)
Mike, you referenced earlier that Ruskell was a "draft guy". If that's true, then why has he flopped so bad on 1st round picks - Jackson, Spencer, Jennings, etc?
Mike Sando (4:40 PM)
I wasn't making a judgment on his draft record. I was saying he loves the draft. It's how he wants to build a team.
Thomas (San Francisco, CA)
Mike I'm disappointed you said the 49ers biggest need is QB. It is true they haven't named the starter, but Hill to me has proven that he can win us football games. A guy like Jeremy Maclin would be the perfect compliment to Shaun's style of play. I'm really hoping he is still around for our 10th pick and the 49ers take him.
Mike Sando (4:42 PM)
I was making more of a broad statement than something tailored specifically to the 49ers. I also thought Hill played well enough for them to win last season. But I felt it was fair to note that they still had not named a starter, and if they didn't think they had their QB of the future, they would need to consider addressing that situation. Pass rusher would really be the top priority in a perfect world, I think.
Don (Hamilton)
Do you think the 49ers are going to risk another dip into free agency with Big Money or are they going to try to focus more on the draft?
Mike Sando (4:43 PM)
They are set up to make another push in free agency, cash willing. They have the cap room. Recent history says they aren't afraid to move fast in free agency. They have a new president who could be looking to make a statement.
Jeremy (Jerusalem, Israel)
PICK ME, I NEED TO GO TO SLEEP BUT A Q ANSWERED! do the Cards go RB first round and where do you see them going in the rest of the Draft?
Mike Sando (4:44 PM)
They considered going RB or CB in the most recent draft. Stewart was gone, so they went with Rodgers-Cromartie. It was a win-win situation. They are picking so late this time -- 31st -- that I think it's harder to say what the value will be in that spot.
Don (Hamilton)
Ok I guess I'll ask a Rams Question now: How do you think they view Marc Bulger? He's been beaten and battered and may have contracted "David Carr Disease" (As in battered to the point of fear and happy feet)
Mike Sando (4:47 PM)
They view him as a $65 million investment. They know his cap number actually increases to $11 million if they cut him. I do not know specifically how they view him -- Pat Shurmer is new on the job as offensive coordinator -- but they need to protect him better. I think Bulger can be an effective quarterback if he can get consistent protection. He's taken too many hits recently and it's affecting how he plays. Kurt Warner had a little bit of that going in the past and he overcame it.
Rob in Reno, Nevada
Mike, can Josh Morgan and Jason Hill develop into quality starters or do they need to look further into the draf?
Mike Sando (4:48 PM)
I would advise trying to develop those guys while still adding to the group. One or both of them should become productive over the long term, but can you bank on it?
Riley(Vista, CA)
Do you see the Rams possibly taking Curry with the second pick if the Lions go OT first overall??
Mike Sando (4:51 PM)
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Rams drafted for defense early. They have a defensive-minded head coach. Yes, they have needs on the offensive line, but good talent evaluators routinely find starting-caliber linemen later in the draft. The question becomes whether the Rams' needs on the lines are such that they can't afford to pass on the best OL talent early. If you can't find the next Orlando Pace with the second pick, perhaps you can find the next productive starting offensive lineman later in the draft.
Mike (Maryland)
Are the Niners on the right track to getting back to being a consistent solid team in the NFL like they used to be?
Mike Sando (4:52 PM)
it's tough to say if they have the right head coach, quarterback and offensive coordinator for the long term. That makes it tough to say for sure if they are on the right track. I do like the fact that they appear likely to match their personnel to their scheme, something we've discussed at length on the blog.
RUSKELL MUST GO!!!
.....agree or disagree?
Mike Sando (4:53 PM)
To the combine? Yes. All the GMs will be there.
Jason (PHX)
Hey Mike, do you think the Cards are just gonna go best player available regardless of position? Also, what are the odds we can keep boldin?
Mike Sando (4:55 PM)
The odds for keeping Boldin are very, very good if the Cardinals want to keep him. Boldin has two more years on his deal, so the Cardinals are in control. As far as going for the best player available, within reason, I think the Cardinals have proven that's a good way to go. DRC fell into that category in 2008 (while also filling a need). IN 2007, the Browns passed on Adrian Peterson in part because they already had Edgerrin James, so the RB need wasn't seen as being immediate. They needed OL help, so they took Levi Brown. Brown is a starter and he might become a very good player, but Peterson is having the better career, obviously, and now James is on his way out.
Riley(Vista, CA)
Another Rams question. Do you see the Rams possibly trying to trade out of that #2 spot since there is no Orlando Pace type player available, getting more draft picks and trying to get themselves in position to draft the C Mack?
Mike Sando (4:56 PM)
That would probably be an ideal scenario for the Rams. However, as noted, we haven't seen many teams swooping into the second overall spot from considerably lower in the draft.
Matt (Bullhead City, AZ)
Is it just me, or does anyone in football want to see Matt Leinart play? I think Warner leaving needs to happen. Your take?!
Mike Sando (4:58 PM)
I would bring back Warner for another year because it makes sense. He was excellent. I would also bring back Leinart and see if circumstances allow for him to get back onto the field. The clock is ticking, but the Cardinals don't really need to make that decision right now.
Dan (Richland, WA)
Do you see the Hawks going QB? Hasselbeck is only getting older and the chance for another top 5 pick in the near future is slim.
Mike Sando (4:58 PM)
I do expect the Seahawks to draft a quarterback in the first few rounds this year.
rick (seattle)
Word has the Rams shopping Pace and Holt. Do you expect any takers, and what kind of return do you expect?
Mike Sando (5:00 PM)
I see no one trading for those players' contracts, most likely. The Rams would be dumping salaries if they parted with those players.
Ram's Fan (for Kurt Warner coming back to St. Louis!)
If Matt doesn't want him we'll take him!!!
Mike Sando (5:00 PM)
And that's a great way to finish the chat. Thanks for dropping by. It's been my pleasure. Hope to see you on the NFC West blog.
