Shawn: (Baltimore, MD):
Will Ray Lewis go to the Boys? Will The Ravens get a big time receiver like Chad or Boldin?
Matt Mosley (11:58 AM)
Let's get started a little early today. There's absolutely no way Ray Lewis ends up in Dallas. The Cowboys don't have enough cap room to sign Lewis and then give DeMarcus Ware the richest contract for a defender in the history of the league. But just to make sure, AFC North blogger James Walker and I will debate this topic tomorrow. And trading for Boldin or Chad Johnson doesn't sound like the Ravens to me.
Jeff Sims Murfreesboro TN
How am I the only one who remembers the days of fat Albert? Does anyone really believe this guy deserves to be the highest paid DL player in the league? If it was based solely on talent I would agree, but he has serious commitment issues. Please comment.
Matt Mosley (12:00 PM)
I'm not sure it's fair to call them "serious commitment issues." When you're an All-Pro player at defensive tackle, that's not exactly a knock on your commitment. I think he's recovered nicely from the horrible stomping incident. He may not be worth insane money, but he's a game-changing player. Just watch a little film and you'll see that.
Canandaigua, NY
Do you think the Giants will sign any top tier free agents?
Matt Mosley (12:01 PM)
Look at what the Giants have done in the past for clues on this one. They bring in guys like Sam Madison, R.W. McQuarters and Sammy Knight to sort of hold the fort. They'll explore everything, but this isn't a team that will break the bank to bring in Housh or anything like that.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
Are the recent comments about Plax possibly coming back from Coughlin and Reese just a way to get his trade value up or are they seriously considering bringing him back?
Matt Mosley (12:03 PM)
It's hard to pump a man's trade value up when we're not sure he'll be a free man this fall. No, I actually think the Giants would consider welcoming Plax back -- under the right circumstances. And that will include some really tough discussions of where he's at mentally and physically.
Ben (Connecticut)
The Eagles are in need of Offensive Line help. What free agent O-Linemen are worth targeting?
Matt Mosley (12:05 PM)
Jordan Gross would've been the best option, but he's off the market. Andy Reid likes to reserve the option of moving his guards out to tackle. I don't think that's a great way to do business, but he truly believes that Shawn Andrews could move over to right tackle and be just fine. I think they'll get something done with Tra Thomas. And yes, I think one of those first-round picks will go toward an offensive lineman. Michael Oher do anything for ya?
Cody (Minnesota)
Where do you think DeAngelo Hall ends up if he does not get resigned by the Redskins?
Matt Mosley (12:08 PM)
The Raiders just drove up the market in a ridiculous way, although they did keep an excellent player. That means that Hall could get paid a lot more than the Redskins were willing to spend. Will he give them a hometown discount? Don't count on it. They paid him $500,000 for half a season. He played really, really well for that half season. We'll know soon whether his reputation as a "shut-down" corner has been restored. I think he's been too much of a headache in the past for teams to forget, so don't look for him to get a HUGE contract.
Dave Spadaro Eagles reporter (Nova care center)
I work for the Eagles but even I don't have a clue what is going on with the team. With McNabb asking for more play-makers do the Eagles respond by getting him more play-makers? And if so who do you think they will target and ultimately get? Or does the Eagles front office do what they normally do and say they tried but nothing came to fruition?
Matt Mosley (12:11 PM)
Dave, don't be so hard on yourself. I think you do a fine job. But don't expect the Eagles to bow to McNabb's demands. He's simply doing some grandstanding. As long as he can point to not having enough weapons, he'll always be able to blame others for his poor stretches. I do think the Eagles better find a starting offensive tackle in this draft. And stop bringing up this "big back" thing. Do you really think Reid would know what to do with him?
Sam (Redmond, WA)
Has Roy Williams played his last game in Dallas? If so, isthere anyone in the market that can replace him and that they can afford?
Matt Mosley (12:13 PM)
I think we've seen the end of the Williams era at safety. You can't pay a ton of money to a two-down player. I think that's a contract they'd love a do-over on. The days of the crash-helmet safety have come and gone. Now teams are looking for guys who can cover. Williams doesn't fit that mold. They'll have to get by with Keith Davis, Ken Hamlin, Pat Watkins and whoever they draft.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
How scary is the Giants defense this season with the 3 man rotation back at DE? When are the Giants going to fix their linebacking core though? Any chance at Laurenitis?
Matt Mosley (12:15 PM)
Do you really want to try out another Ohio State LB. Let's see, Katzenmoyer, Hawk, Carpenter...do I really need to go on? I suppose Hawk's been OK, but he hasn't been all that great. The Giants have rooted like crazy for Gerris Wilkinson in the past, but he's not going to get it done. I like Danny Clark, but he's getting long in the tooth. So yes, you need to find someone in the draft. Brian Cushing do anything for ya?
Kev (NYC)
Signing RW McQuarters, Sammy Knight is one thing when you have quality starters and are just adding depth. But the Giants are different this off-season, they will go into next yr with high expectations and esp. if Plax's salary comes off the books, they HAVE to do something at WR/LB, so why would they have a conservative philosophy, especially with a legit chance to win again if they add the impact pieces?? Thanks
Matt Mosley (12:18 PM)
They always have high expectations, Kev. You don't think they had that after the Super Bowl? Jerry Reese won't change his entire philosophy just because the team has a few holes to fill. And don't sleep on Kehl. Nice little player who sort of gets lost in the shuffle. And best three-man DE rotation in football. Kiwanuka as a backup? You kiddin' me? Go get a guy like Nicks or Heyward-Bey late in the first round. And if anyone's interested I've fallen in love with a second-round receiver.
Bill (Cherry Hill, NJ)
Do you think the Eagles might consider taking a RB with the 21th or 28th pick? IF they do, who do you think the Eagles have a legit chance of drafting?
Matt Mosley (12:19 PM)
Moreno and Wells didn't exactly tear it up at the combine. I like the McCoy kid out of Pitt. But I think the Eagles will look to draft someone at RB on Day 2.
Danny (columbus,OH)
hey Matt, I'm a big colts fan and I'm just curious if they will pick up any big names during free agency?
Matt Mosley (12:20 PM)
The great Paul Kuharsky will be here to answer your AFC South questions in 10 minutes.
Scott Leppanen, centerville, ma
Where will marvin Harrison end up since his parting ways with Indy? What teams will be vying for his services in relation to his age and value at this point in his career?
Matt Mosley (12:22 PM)
I don't think teams will be falling all over themselves to sign a declining player -- except maybe the Cowboys. The Redskins have tried to get away from acquiring age, although that's exactly what they did with Jason Taylor last season. I think Philly might have the hometown advantage in this situation.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
Who's the 2nd round receiver and will he be there when the Giants pick 14th that round?
Matt Mosley (12:24 PM)
I'll just say that I think the Robiskie kid out Ohio State has a chance to be the next Boldin. Doesn't have blazing speed but I've seen him get open deep plenty of times. Has superb hands. Catches everything away from his body. If I'm the Cowboys, I'd think hard about this guy at No. 51. I can't tell you how impressed I was after watching the guy during the combine workouts.
Tom (College Park, MD)
With Darrius Heyward-Bey's combine results, where do you think he will fall in the draft?
Matt Mosley (12:25 PM)
With his size, there's still a chance he goes late first, early second.
Jon Cavalieri N.Attleboro Massachusetts
I was wondering what you might think the addition of Gabril wilson S and either B. Scott or Suggs LB's of Baltimore would do for the New England Patriots if they land them?
Matt Mosley (12:27 PM)
Gibril Wilson is exactly the type of player Belichick will love. He's a pretty versatile guy -- and the Pats will be getting him when his value's obviously gone down. Bart Scott is a bad, bad man. He's a big-time talker. It would be interesting to see how he might fit into that locker room. He could reunite with Thomas.
Jack (Philadelphia, PA)
What and who do you think the Redskins will be looking for come the Free Agency Period, starting on friday?
Paul Kuharsky (12:31 PM)
Kuharsky here, ready to shift the conversation to the AFC South...
Errol (Jacksonville, Fla)
Paul did the jags make a mistake in releasing Taylor....Do the Jags now look at a back to come in and back up Jones-Drew and do they aquire a WR in FA even though Porter was a bust
Matt Mosley (12:31 PM)
Redskins are in the process of unloading some of their age (Griffin, Daniels, Springs). They'll free up some room. They may take a run at Al Haynesworth. He's a one-man wrecking crew. I don't know if it's worth ridiculous money for a two-down player but I've seen him take over games. The Redskins have to address the OL and DLs. That's Cerrato's biggest failure if you ask me. Since 2000, they've done an awful job of acquiring interior linemen. You guys were great. Wish we had more time. Sorry I didn't get to do more Cowboys. Enjoy my good pal Kuharsky!!
Paul Kuharsky (12:32 PM)
Sounds like they think Greg Jones is the complimentary back now. That may be too much power and not enough shake in the two. They could draft one too, but not a big priority. A mistake with Fred? We'll see. But I can understand how they'd rather be a year too early than a year too late...
chauncey (teaneck)
Who will replace Marvin Harrison?
Paul Kuharsky (12:33 PM)
A draft pick. They could grab one right from the start at 27...
Paul Kuharsky (12:34 PM)
Be wary of guys whose original teams find them unworthy of a bid, a la Khalif Barnes...
mike (philadelphia, pa)
paul, will the titans go after a big name wide receiver through a trade or free agency, or will they look to the draft to fill this need? in either case, who could some possibilities be?
Paul Kuharsky (12:35 PM)
When you have history as a guide, I use it. Don't see them chasing Housh. Don't see them parting with price of Boldin. Imagine they will draft one and then be patient, but probably not a first rounder...
Adam (Columbus, OH)
How many of my Colt's FA's will they retain? I'm worried about guys like Saturday and Dominic Rhodes a lot more than Marvin.
Paul Kuharsky (12:36 PM)
When you have history as a guide, I use it. Don't see them chasing Housh. Don't see them parting with price of Boldin. Imagine they will draft one and then be patient, but probably not a first rounder...
Paul Kuharsky (12:36 PM)
See Monday's post on Saturday. I think they are hopeful he gets to market, sees the prices aren't what he'd hope and returns. Rhodes won't find a better situation, I don't think, but if someone throws a good deal at him things change...
Clay (HTown)
Will the Texans make any moves in free agency? Any shot at Haynesworth or will they not bother?
Paul Kuharsky (12:37 PM)
Then say no on Albert, so unless they are posturing... They have too many holes on D to fill all in one draft. Have to bring in a few mid-level free agents and need to do better than Rosevelt Colvin...
Tyler (Houston, TX)
Will the Titans resign haynesworth? Who might they possibly draft in the first round? Harvin? maybe db, considering nick harper is getting old.
Paul Kuharsky (12:38 PM)
I could see them sitting there and seeing what falls into their lap, like in 2000 when they landed Bulluck though he wasn't a need. CB is certainly in play, but Harper is a solid starter in 2009...
Josh (Charlotte, NC)
Hey Paul, long time chatter here: If Marv is in fact released (after last ditch effort on Irsay's part), will that free up enough money to increase offer to Jeff? It sure seems Peyton was on his back a lot more when Jeff was out with the injuries.
Paul Kuharsky (12:40 PM)
Good question. They need the money for a lot of stuff. If Jeff gets a big-money deal elsewhere, they're going to say thanks and good luck. But they have to be hoping he doesn't and comes back with a different perspective...
Clarksville,Tn
What do you think is more likely to happen....The Titans resign Haynesworth or sign a WR in free agancy?
Paul Kuharsky (12:40 PM)
They'll probably sign a receiver in free agency, it's just not going to be the one you hope it is...
Tyler (Carlsbad, CA)
Do you think Fred Taylor will be a good fit with the Patriots?
Paul Kuharsky (12:41 PM)
I think he'd be great there. Would need to work hard at catching better...
Ronnie, D.C.
With the Coach gone, Harrison gone, Peyton on rickety legs, and Dallas Clark and Sanders both a concussion away from retirement, have we seen the decline of the Colts begin???
Paul Kuharsky (12:42 PM)
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss them. Peyton had a serious knee injury and he recovered. That doesn't make for "rickety legs." He was spectacular in Jacksonville late in the season. But they have some holes to fill, yes...
Steven (Atlanta, GA)
Will the Colt's beef up their D-Line?
Paul Kuharsky (12:43 PM)
I expect they will, but that doesn't mean a first- or second-round DT necessarily. They can find bigger guys than they have with later picks or even as undrafteds...
Justin Sap (Buffalo)
Whats the chance the Bills look to sign Haynesworth? And what is the chance Haynesworth is willing to go to Buffalo?
Paul Kuharsky (12:43 PM)
Slim and slim, I think. But you never know for sure...
Paul Kuharsky (12:43 PM)
AFC South emphasis here til top of the hour...
Matt (Chicago)
The Colt's are the most overrated team in football for years. Your thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (12:44 PM)
They've underachieved in the playoffs for sure. But in the regular season they've been exceptional, and that is all a reasonable fan can ask for, a great regular season that gives you a chance in the playoffs...
Cameron (Jacksonville Florida)
What moves in free agents can you see the Jaguars making?
Paul Kuharsky (12:45 PM)
Nothing major, nothing expensive. I think they'll be like the Titans, targeting cheaper guys they think will have upside in their system and locker room...
Justin (Reno, Nv.)
Harrison to Miami?
greg(atlanta,ga)
do u think marvin harrison fits in with the giants plans at reciever
Paul Kuharsky (12:46 PM)
Probably not...
Tyler (Houston, TX)
Whats the future of vince young? Can the titans make another big run like last season, and actually win a superbowl?
Paul Kuharsky (12:47 PM)
I can't predict their 2009 season not knowing about big factors like Haynesworth and Collins. Young will be second or third string, maybe get one more chance to seize the job. I don't think he'll be able to do it...
Justin Laramie, WY
Do you think the Titans will be able to sign any receivers in the market? Or will they try to ugrade with the draft?
Paul Kuharsky (12:47 PM)
Draft and maybe a veteran guy they think they can turn into something like they did with Gage...
Tony (El Campo, Tx)
Who can the Texans get in free agency to make it over the 8-8 hump?
Paul Kuharsky (12:48 PM)
A couple pieces who play beter for them than they did where they came from. But the draft is more important. Safety and defensive end must be upgraded...
Erik (Clarksville,Tn)
What direction do you think the Titans would go if they lost Collins in free agency?
Paul Kuharsky (12:49 PM)
Hard to say. If Simms is on the market, he'd be a factor. If they are both gone, plan C is unknown. They think they'll be able to match a Collins offer and keep him...
Tony (Lancaster, PA)
Do you think Derrius Heyward-Bey will be available when the Jags pick in the second round?
Paul Kuharsky (12:50 PM)
I don't...
Cameron (Jacksonville Florida)
Any names in mind for the Jaguars? Haynesworth? Could Albert make the Jags the front runner for the Super Bowl next year?
Paul Kuharsky (12:50 PM)
The Jags have said after Porter and Florence disasters that they will not be big players in big money free agency...
Nate (Indy)
So with Saturday determined to test the market, what exactly is the demand for a top-notch center? Wasn't part of what made Saturday good his relationship with Peyton? Will that be easy to duplicate elsewhere?
Paul Kuharsky (12:51 PM)
Stay tuned for a post at top of the hour on the AFC South Blog about leverage for the big name free-agents-to-be. With Saturday, I think the Colts have it...
Ryan (indy)
Will the colts sign any FA Wide outs? or will they draft most likely? if so will Gonzalez get bumped up to second string?
Paul Kuharsky (12:53 PM)
There is no such thing as second-string among Colts top three wideouts. Gonzalez will be a crucial piece, but is at his best in the slot. But if Harrison is gone, Gonzo starts off as the No. 2 WR...
Cameron (Jacksonville Florida)
Jaguars 1st round pick?
Paul Kuharsky (12:53 PM)
The best OT on the board..
Scott(Spain, Europe)
Can I ask is Owen Daniels(TE) Texans due to be a FA this weekend coming or is he just in final year of contract?
Paul Kuharsky (12:54 PM)
A restricted free agent, I believe. They have his rights for another year...
Paul (Delaware)
Any chance Vince leaves the Titans?
Paul Kuharsky (12:54 PM)
He's under contract and Jeff Fisher has said VY will be on the team in 2009...
Tyler (Murfreesboro, TN)
What are the chances of the Titans keeping vinny Fuller and Chris Carr? They are both key players, but are they role guys that can be easily replaced?
Paul Kuharsky (12:55 PM)
Depends on the market. But if Carr wants starting CB money, he needs to be a starting CB, and he won't be in Tennessee. Fuller is a good fit for Titans, who hope no one else sees him and pays him as a starting safety rather than a nickel who plays a lot of snaps...
John (Rockport, TX)
Follow up about Owen Daniels. Are the Texans going to resign him or is he going to make it to the open market?
Paul Kuharsky (12:56 PM)
They intend to work hard to lock him up. But that's not a priority now, they have plenty of time...
Cameron (Jacksonville Florida)
how big is the contract that the Jags are offering to resign MJD?
Paul Kuharsky (12:56 PM)
On par with what Steven Jackson got, it's been reported...
Nicholas (Oyens, IA)
I'm a Vikings fan and I was wondering do you think Sage Rosenfels is our answer at quarterback? Do you think Matt Birk will be mack next year? What do you think the Vikings will do in the draft?
Paul Kuharsky (12:57 PM)
I certainly like Sage better than Jackson. Birk is in similar situation as Saturday. Lots of good centers in free agency and draft...
Rochester, NY
With this trade of Sage going to the Vikes, do they still try and aquire a QB in free agency or try to find other talents like a #1 WR or a RT?
Paul Kuharsky (12:57 PM)
No, they'd be done at QB I would think...
Ryan, St. Louis Park, MN
What do you think the chances are that this Sage to Vikings talk is just a smokescreen to gain leverage in maybe trading for another QB?
Paul Kuharsky (12:58 PM)
Why would the Texans cooperate? And who?
Ryan (Indy)
What are the colts going to do to improve their defense overall? they seem to be soft at the running game, get bombed down the field many times, and seems to be having trouble staying healthy (saturday, sanders, so forth). what are they going to do this off season to improve?
Paul Kuharsky (12:59 PM)
Scheme will be more varied and less predictable under Coyer than it was on Meeks. And they will be bigger at DT on run downs...
Joey (Rochester, New York)
Out of the following UFA & RFA WR's which ones do you think makes the most sense for the Titans to go after: David Anderson, Greg Camarillo, Michael Clayton, Malcom Floyd, Devery Henderson, Dane Looker, Shaun McDonald, Lance Moore & Nate Washington?
Paul Kuharsky (12:59 PM)
I like Anderson, Moore and Washington most of those...
Matt (Dahlgren, VA)
Do you see the Colts taking a WR with the 1st round pick? I could see Robiskie fitting in well in the Colts offense. What do you think?
Tag Ribary (1:00 PM)
Hey everybody. Some great questions being asked. Let's keep it going.
Paul Kuharsky (1:01 PM)
I could see them going WR at 27, but I don't know about Robiskie there...
MJ (Boston)
Malcom Jenkins did not break 4.5 in the 40, i heard they were saying he may be a safety? Did you hear this?
Paul Kuharsky (1:01 PM)
Onto Tag. Thanks...
Tag Ribary (1:02 PM)
I've heard that but I wouldn't totally count on it happening just yet. He will probably run better at the Pro Day workout.
Joe Cleveland, OH
Who are the Browns targeting in free-agency?
Tag Ribary (1:02 PM)
My guess is defensive help for Cleveland with possible RB considerations.
Joe (FLA)
Will the Bucs be able to restructure Antonio Bryant for the long haul and what others moves do you see them taking with that BIG money?
Tag Ribary (1:05 PM)
I think the Bucs will get a deal done with Bryant at some point. They can help themselves defensively in free agency but I don't see big money spent on just a couple of guys. Bargain shopping to build depth seems to make sense for them.
Jeff (Dallas, TX)
How badly do the Lions need a LB? Do you see Curry as a possibility for them?
Tag Ribary (1:05 PM)
They have a lot of holes to fill and LB is near the top of the list, right behind QB, OL, and DL.
mike grand rapids ,mi [via mobile]
Any chance the lions make a big sign this year or is the team just to bad to draw a top free agent?
Tag Ribary (1:07 PM)
The Lions will have enough cap room to make a splash but they need to be cautious in my opinion. Look for value.
Alex(Boston,MA)
Why the heck did they sign rosenfels? He is mediocre at best and he is joining a core of mediocre QBs... Wasn't he also the guy who "threw away" that game against INDY?
Tag Ribary (1:08 PM)
Sage has had some success and I think they view him as a younger version of Gus Frerotte. A lot of people remember the Indy game and forget about some of his better performances. Rosenfels is also up to speed in a similar type system which is a big benefit.
Zach, Green Bay, WI
The Packers have some cap room, do you think Ted Thompson will break out of his shell and actually use some of it on a free agent or two? If so, who do you see as a possibility?
Tag Ribary (1:10 PM)
I don't see Ted changing his ways drastically in regards to free agency. He will evaluate the 3-4 defenders market closely and possibly make a move if the price is right.
James ( Augusta, GA)
Will the rams get o-line help in free agency? And will Aaron Curry be available at #2?
Tag Ribary (1:12 PM)
Yes, to both questions. If they don't help themselves up front with a few free agent additions I would be surprised.
Greg (Hernando,Ms)
Do you see Canty with the Dolphins & if so, do the BOYS go after Olsansky of the Chargers
Tag Ribary (1:12 PM)
I've thought Canty was headed to Miami for a while now. I don't have any confirmation of that from anyone but it seems to make a lot of sense for both parties.
Jon Cavalieri (N.Attleboro Massachusetts)
Hey Tag, your thoughts about Rey Lewis becoming a Cowboy and do you believe this is the attitude adjustment they need? If they do land him to help with the locker room woes, they should have kept Tank because his tremendous upside. They still need DT depth.
Tag Ribary (1:15 PM)
Hey Jon. I think the Ray Lewis talk to Dallas is mostly just talk. I have a hard time seeing him walk away from Baltimore after the organization has reiterated up and down that they want to keep him.
Kendall (Bronx, NY)
How will the Panthers fare next season after Delhomme's horrendous showing against the Cardinals in the playoffs?
Tag Ribary (1:16 PM)
Panthers will still be tough, competitive and physical in 2009. It was a bad game but they did go 12-4 last year.
Kendall (Bronx, NY)
Where does Derrick Ward end up?
Tag Ribary (1:16 PM)
Cleveland could be a good landing spot for him.
Zak (Greeley, CO)
The Panthers franchised Peppers, now what? Any trades in the works? Or will they hang onto him even with the possibility he could be unproductive?
Tag Ribary (1:18 PM)
I think they will try to patch up the relationship while also listening to any offers that may come along. I don't think they want to get rid of him unless someone blows them away with an offer.
Dave, Frederick, MD
I thnk the Skins should keep Hall cut Springs, what say? And get O linemen!
Tag Ribary (1:20 PM)
Definitely get some help on both the OL and DL. The CB situation will depend on how much D. Hall is looking for. It could be too much.
AJ (PHILLY)
What's seriously going on with the Philly WR situation. Everyone speculates there are going to pursue TJ hard, but then some say we are chasing Boldin! What's the deal?
Tag Ribary (1:22 PM)
There are a lot of rumors floating around out there and they are often intentional to drive up the price. I think if the Eagles were to somehow get Housh, it would an excellent fit.
John (Stamford, CT)
What do you think of Jamarcus Russell's future as a QB in the NFL? Is he as bad as he looks, or is it a product of a bad Oakland Raiders team??
Tag Ribary (1:24 PM)
They need to surround him with playmakers and a better offensive line to get a thorough evaluation. So far his accuracy makes me nervous.
Chris (Roselle Park, NJ)
I am heard that LJ Smith is going to head to the Jets. What do you think of this?
Tag Ribary (1:26 PM)
It's possible but they need to be somewhat careful due to the durability issues that many people have about him.
michael (ny,ny)
Miami has set a value on C.Crowder and he apparantly doesn't agree. Do you think there will be a big market for him? He's a workhorse, makes a lot of plays (although not gamechanging), etc. but do you think Miami is saying if we're paying out a big contract it's going to someone more active, bigger and less injury prone (knees) like B. Scott?
Tag Ribary (1:30 PM)
I tend to see Bart Scott in New York with the Jets more than Miami but both players should benefit when multiple teams are looking.
Tag Ribary (1:30 PM)
Thanks for the questions everyone. Matt Williamson is up next.
Jon O sarasota
Hey guys texans fan here. So I love how we build through the draft and everything and sign role players in free agency. But with our offense clicking right now and andre johnson in his prime. Do you see the texans going after atleast one big name free agent on defense to help put us over the hump?
Matt Williamson (1:33 PM)
Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. I see Houston's needs as very defined. They could really use a difference maker at safety-and maybe they go get a vet like Sharper, Dawkins, Philips, etc...esp since it is a poor S draft. I also think they still need help up front and could use a pass rusher opposite Mario and a plugger at DT to eat space.
Brad Rancho Cucamonga California
What is Detroit going to do?
Matt Williamson (1:33 PM)
Really starting to think that Curry might be the pick. Safest guy in the draft with the least worries/questions. Still a lot of time to find out more on this however.
balraj (oh)
i was wondering what are the chances the bills sign sean jones? bills would like to move whittner to fs and jones could come in to play ss.
Matt Williamson (1:34 PM)
Yeah, I hear ya, but I am not sold that Whitner would be better at FS. Wouldn't be a terrible move, but Buff has bigger needs in my mind for sure.
Omar(New York,NY)
Do you think the giants hsve a legit shot at Bart Scott?
Matt Williamson (1:35 PM)
Yeah, I do. NYG could be in fantastic shape on D with that addition. No question about it.
Jim (Indy)
Matty!!!!!!!! Shouldn't the Colts just let Marvin walk and attempt to get their salary cap situation under control? SERENITY NOW!
Matt Williamson (1:35 PM)
Seems like a no brainer to me
john(Buffalo,NY)
I have heard that the Bills are interested in trading for Owen daniels? Can you confirm that rumor?
Matt Williamson (1:36 PM)
Can't confirm or deny and while I think Daniels would be a terrific addition to that O, he won't come cheap in terms of draft picks. Houston isn't going to let him walk without some serious compensation-which I would bet makes it too rich for Buff.
Greg, Marion,In
Do you think the Bears will draft heyward-bey with their first round pick? hes had a great combine and has height that we lack?
Matt Williamson (1:37 PM)
I wouldn't argue with that at all and have been a fan of his for quite a while. Serious deep threats with him and Hester! Still, they have a lot of needs including OT, S, DE and QB.
ryan kitchen(canada)
Will Pioli make any big splashes in free agency, maybe trade for cassel?
Matt Williamson (1:38 PM)
That could happen, but I wouldn't get rid of that early pick for Cassel. Maybe the 2nd rounder and a 3rd next year? Still, this is another team with a ton of needs, so they need all the picks they can get and personnally, I would probably stick wtih Thigpen for one year on a trial basis while I tried to build something around him.
Shane(Minneapolis, MN)
what do you think of the Vikings trading Chester Taylor & a 2nd rd pick for Boldin, then draft an OL in rd 1?
Matt Williamson (1:39 PM)
Hmm-I like Taylor and all, but I don't think I would do that if I were in Zona. I think they can get more.
Dan (Buffalo, NY)
MW, it sounds like Curry will be gone by #5 so should the Browns attempt to trade down, accumulate picks and pick the second tier DL/LB's?
Matt Williamson (1:40 PM)
Maybe, but who is going to be that guy that teams want to trade up to get? Crabtree? Raji? An OT? Maybe, but overall, I expect it to be tough to move down this year. Not enough stand outs.
Nick (Atlanta)
with the departure of malloy where do you see the falcons going for that position either via free sgency or the draft?
Matt Williamson (1:41 PM)
Sean Jones was mentioned earlier and he or J Philips would make a lot of sense to me as free agent addtions.
John (NJ)
Should the Jets go after a guy like Peppers, or do they need help on offense?
Matt Williamson (1:42 PM)
They have enough tied up at OLB with Thomas, Golston and Pace. See what they can collectively do under R Ryan. I would be more inclined to get a CB, ILB or DE on D if I were to get aggressive on that side of the ball. On O, besides QB, I don't see glaring needs, but I also can't say that I am thrilled with their WRs or RT situation.
Josh (Missouri)
how do u think the chiefs will do this year with there new head coach?
Matt Williamson (1:43 PM)
Poorly-but I really don't blame the coach. Just so many holes on that team and now they are switching to a 3-4 on D, which really could hurt their few decent players such as D Johnson, Hali and Dorsey.
Matt (Palatka,Fl)
I'm a Lions fan and I don't want them to go after big names in FA. I like Michael Boley of the Falcons and I was wondering what the general consensus on him is.
Matt Williamson (1:44 PM)
Had a very good year two years ago, but had a real tough year in 2008-and ended up losing his starting job to Coy Wire. Especially struggled against the run. Certainly is a talented player though and could be better off doing more blitzing, but there are certainly concerns with signing him.
Cody (Aviano, IT)
Is it possible AQ Shipley will wear Steelers black and gold on draft day? if so possible next Mike Webster?
Matt Williamson (1:45 PM)
Unfair comparison. 52 is an all time great. HOF. I like Shipley a lot and think he is a legit starting OC in this league. Steelers type of guy as well. so I could see that happening, but come on with the Webby comparisons.
Renaldo D.C.
Matt I know you got the guts to talk about the Big Dawg Michael Vick! Who will sign him and for what position?
Matt Williamson (1:46 PM)
Oh-teams will be interested. Have heard SF and SEA, but I bet there are more. I think he can be effective as a Wild Cat/Gimmick/Returner immediatly as he gets his feet wet back in the NFL.
Nick (Westford, MA)
As a Ravens fan, I desperately hope we retain Ray Lewis, but also think it's a neccessity to get a difference-maker at receiver. How do you see the overall offseason for the Ravens playing out?
Matt Williamson (1:47 PM)
I do think Lewis stays, but I also think that it will be very tough to add talent from other teams. CB or WR could be their first round pick, but most of their new talent is going to have to come on DDay.
Joey (Virginia Beach)
I played against Percy Harvin in high school, and he was a menace then. When and where do you see Harvin drafted, and where would he best fit?
Matt Williamson (1:49 PM)
Would bet that he was pretty decent in HS! Best fit? Hmm, to someone that needs a returner in a big way, has an inovative O Coordinator and doesn't need him to produce instantly as a WR. What team(s) fit that bill? Will kick it around a bit.
Nick Ortwein
Do you think the seahawks will draft crabtree? Or maybe go after a reciever in free agency
Matt Williamson (1:50 PM)
Of course the medical will be crucial now with Crabtree, but I still could very well see him in Seattle at #4. No question.
Corey(Kansas City, MO)
Do you think Denver will land any big name defensive players? and if they do who do you think are possibilities?
Matt Williamson (1:50 PM)
They HAVE to. Have very little on D right now to build around. Very little. Would guess that they get involved with a true 3-4 DE like Olshansky or Canty for openers.
Jake (VA Beach)
Speaking of Harvin...I WATCHED him in HS and he took plays off that didn't include him. He also seemed to lack interest in plays at Florida as well. Is this an issue discussed with teams?
Matt Williamson (1:51 PM)
There have been some rumblings along those lines...
Jason ( Philadelphia)
Anquan Boldin, does he get traded? And what will it take to pry him away from Arizona?
Matt Williamson (1:52 PM)
Philly and NYG seem like the most likely destinations and it will cost at least a first rounder. Of course, TBay, Chi and many others will want Boldin's services. He won't be cheap and this might end up being the best move for Zona and Boldin.
Adam Tampa
is there any chance in your opinion the bucs make a run for derrick ward? If not maybe in the draft?
Matt Williamson (1:53 PM)
RB would not be a top priority for me in TBay. Can live with what they have. Need a WR and prob a QB on O more than anything. Would try to build a stud D though with all that cap room.
Nick (Tampa, FL)
Who are the top 3 teams you see albert going to? Tampa?
Matt Williamson (1:54 PM)
For sure. Detroit as well. Who else? Maybe Denver, but I don't like him as much for the 3-4. Washington makes sense for sure.
Shelly (Tucson, AZ)
Hey Matt! Are any teams seriously interested in Derek Anderson? What do you think he value is?
Matt Williamson (1:55 PM)
Shocks me a bit as well and yes, I understand how needy that some teams are for a QB, but I don't see it with DA. Maybe a third rounder.
Beau, Idaho
Do you see Miami get any big name free agents?
Matt Williamson (1:55 PM)
I would bet that they land one. Maybe Housh or Canty. I also bet that Bell stays.
Dan (Jacksonville, FL)
Where do you see Fred Taylor playing next year?
Matt Williamson (1:56 PM)
Just heard the rumor of Taylor to NEng or Buff-and both make a lot of sense, esp NEng.
Matt (St. Paul)
What team do you think would be the best fit for Jeff Garcia, and where do you think he will land?
Matt Williamson (1:57 PM)
Thought Minny off the bat, but now-probably not. Still, they could add one more arm to compete for sure. Who else? KC? Guessing that Garcia isn't going to be real excited about his offers.
Jim (Toledo, OH)
I read Taylor was going to interview in Buff which could result in Lynch getting traded. Would that even be smart?
Matt Williamson (1:58 PM)
Sorta. Lynch is a smidge overrated and also is getting into a lot of trouble off the field, which miht be all Buff needs to move him. Still, Fred T went to U of Flor and played at Jax-think he is going to be doing cartwheels to move to Buffalo?
James (North Carolina)
Matt what do you see the Redskins doing?
Matt Williamson (1:59 PM)
They need to fortify both lines. Will they? I really have my doubts, as that organization tends to overlook OL high in the draft and too often opts to make a big splash. If they do make a splash, hopefully they do it on the DL.
Rob (Phx,AZ)
How about this trade. Boldin in exchange for one of Phillys 1st round picks and Lito Shepard?
Matt Williamson (2:00 PM)
Actually thought about that myself yesterday. Maybe. Do the Cards really need Shepard? Wouldn't hurt that is for sure. Seems plausible.
Matt Williamson (2:00 PM)
Okay everyone-I am out.
Mike (Boca Raton)
is mcnabb in the position to tell the eagles that an extension is based upon the eagles signing free agents? sounds like a pretty audacious statement from someone who can't win the big games
Bill Williamson (2:02 PM)
Hi guys, it's Bill Williamson Nice point, Mike. Maybe it is a subtle nudge to get himself out of town. But you can't blame the guy if he wants a top flight receiver to work with.
Ryan (New Jersey)
Now that Malaluga's hurt, and Raji is movin up the draft board, who would denver draft at 12, if Raji aint there and Malaluga's stock drops too far?
Bill Williamson (2:05 PM)
Well, Denver has needs at every spot on dfense so it will have op;ions. Still, I don't think Rey's injury is going to affect his draft status much. He is still a target for Denver.
TONY NC
THE JETS HAVE A NEED FOR LB AND LEWIS AND SCOTT ARE OUT THERE DO THEY SIGN BOTH OR JUST ONE AND WHICH
Bill Williamson (2:07 PM)
I think it is certainly a possibility one or two of these guys could end up with former Baltimore DC Rex Ryan. At this point, I'd say Scott may have a better chance of ending up in New York. I'm believing that Lewis to Dallas talk.
Trevor (Washington D.C.)
Hey Bill, do you see Mike Vick coming back this year to play, and with what team? Does Goodell keep him suspended?
Bill Williamson (2:08 PM)
This is just an educated guess; I think the league doesn't reinstate him until 2010. No team is going to openly say they want him until he is reinstated.
Elliot ( PITT)
Do you see SIX-burgh (u like that?) moving up to draft a top notch OL, say top 10? or will they just draft the best OL on the board when they pick at the end of the 1st?
Bill Williamson (2:10 PM)
The Steelers are used to drafting late and they'e done fine. There are some quality offensive lineman who will be available at No. 32. I think they stick to where they are and take their chances.
eric (salt lake city)
Who do the niners draft at 10? Sanchez? Where do they go in free agency?
Bill Williamson (2:11 PM)
Sanchez had a great combine. If he follows it up with a good pro day in early April, he may not be available at No. 10. I think the 49ers would be a nice fit if he is there. Teams smay be trying to trade up to get him.
Philadelphia
where will Housh end up?
Bill Williamson (2:12 PM)
How about Philly?
Joey (Baltimore,MD)
Any chance Scott stays in bmore?
Bill Williamson (2:13 PM)
Sure, but the Ravens have so many key free agents it is going to be tough.
Ricardo (Miami)
What are the chances of Ray Lewis and Bartrell ending up in Denver?
Bill Williamson (2:14 PM)
I think Bartell may be a better bet. But he may be pricey.
Jason (DC)
I heard Haynesworth is gonna sign with the skins. Have you heard anything about this?
Bill Williamson (2:15 PM)
There's rumors out thee. The Redskins aren't afraid of spending big and making a splash. It definitely makes sense.
PT (Franklin, NC)
Do the Raiders need to look for a true MLB in the draft or free agency and move Kirk Morrison to the outside? With that in mind would Rey Malaugua be a good fit in Oakland?
Bill Williamson (2:16 PM)
The Raiders have so many other pressing issues that this may not be the year to do it. Plus, Morrison was solid.
Bill Williamson (2:17 PM)
By the way this is Bill WIlliamson. It has been since 2 p.m. Thanks.
Jim (Charlotte)
What do you think the panters will do this off season? any big names and what will they do with Julius
Bill Williamson (2:18 PM)
I think Gross and Peppers were their big names pick ups.
Sarah (Denver)
Has anyone ever had a worse combine than Andre Smith? He was considered a legitimate #1 pick, and now there's talk that he could slide out of the first round altogether. What do you see happening with him?
Bill Williamson (2:19 PM)
There's been some rela stineks. (anyone remember Maurice Clarett?) but Smith had a brutal weekend for sure,. He may have cost himself millions.
Guillermo (San Diego CA)
Do you think the raiders are going to draft a Left tackle instead of a receiver. A left tackle would help Jamarcus and Mcfadded.
Bill Williamson (2:20 PM)
It may all depend on Crabtree. If he is there at No. 7, Oakland may be too tempted to pass him up.
Ranndy (Katy, Tx)
Texans fan here, do the texans have enough money to go after Albert Haynesworth?
Bill Williamson (2:23 PM)
Most teams can make it work for one player fi they want unless they are in serious cap jail. The problem is Washington may outbid any team for Haynesworth.
Eric (San Diego, CA)
What do you see the Chargers doing in free agency and their top two picks in the draft? They have needs on the DL, ILB, S, OT/OG and RB obviously. Curious on your take if you were A.J. Smith.
Bill Williamson (2:24 PM)
The Chargers always play free agency close to the vest. They want to get Tomlinson done and re-sign Rivers and Gates. But I can see a linebacker or offensive lineman coming into the San Diego fold in free agency.
Lane (balt. MD)
wouldn't it be wise to let go of Ray Lewis and pick up an offensive threat? Mr. Reed and Suggs have plenty of leadership within them and Ray is getting older...
Bill Williamson (2:25 PM)
Maybe. That would be a healthy plan but losing legends is always hard for teams and Lewis is the face of the Ravens.
Reno (DC)
Wait, so there is a Bill AND a Matt Williamson?
Bill Williamson (2:26 PM)
Crazy, huh?
Archie in Amarillo [via mobile]
do you think the broncos will go after fred taylor or maybe trade for LJ from the chiefs or will the make any big off season changes
Bill Williamson (2:28 PM)
Perhaps Taylor. They wouldn't mind a veteran running back but he is reportedly talking to Buffalo and New England. But then again, if he fits New England then new Denver coach Josh McDaniels (and former New England OC) probably thinks he fits his team as well. But I don't see Denver and Kansas City making a trade.
Michael (Phoenix, AZ)
Here in AZ people are saying trade Matt Leinart and Boldin for Larry Johnson and Tony G.
Bill Williamson (2:30 PM)
That's a very lopsided deal in the Chiefs' favor. :Look, I love Tony G and he is still a great player but Boldin is much younger and Leinart could develop. Johnson is nearing the end. That is very lopsided in Kansas City's favor.
Bill Williamson (2:31 PM)
OK, guys, that's it for me. Enjoy the wild week ahead. BW.
Kevin Seifert (2:33 PM)
Hi folks. Sorry I'm a bit late to the party. Combine hangover. Let's get on with it.
Adam (Columbia, TN)
Hey Kevin...What in the world is Andre Smith thinking??? I mean he does realize he lost millions of dollars due to his actions over the weekend? How far does he drop??? As for the Lions, are they going to be players for Big Al or is it just a rumor b/c Schwartz was his D-coordinator since he has been in the league?
Kevin Seifert (2:35 PM)
I could see Andre Smith sinking into the latter half of the first round or beyond. It depends on how well he recovers, physically and attitude-wise, during his Pro Day next month. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions made a run at Albert Haynesworth. I would be mildly surprised if he signed there.
Eric (Eden Prairie, MN)
The Vikings are built to win now. Why aren't they trading their top seven draft picks for an elite quarterback? Or maybe their 1st 3rd and 4th for McNabb? Their in the situation where they can throw draft picks at teams.
Kevin Seifert (2:37 PM)
I think this will be the biggest question of the Childress era. They've been trying to make do with mid-rated quarterbacks for four years now. Especially now, an elite quarterback could put them over the top. But I don't think they believe it is necessary.
Brian (Reedsburg, WI)
Hey Kevin, do you see teams trading more like last year, or is the free agent market good enough where most teams will avoid trades? Where does L.T. fit in all this, cleveland maybe?
Kevin Seifert (2:38 PM)
There might have to be some trades, because the rash of franchise tags have left the free agent market pretty barren. There isn't a lot out there, besides Albert Haynesworth. As for L.T., I'm not sure. I wouldn't give up on him working things out with San Diego.
Tim, Minneapolis MN
Where are we at with the Williams Wall situation? Haven't heard much about it lately.
Kevin Seifert (2:39 PM)
Actually, I understand there is a pretrial hearing going on today. All that means is that the legal wheels are turning. Nothing seems imminent at this point.
Joey (Neenah, WI)
Do you see the Packers getting a chance to draft Aaron Curry at the #9 pick? He is exactly what the Packers need, a team leader with the ability to take over a game.
Kevin Seifert (2:40 PM)
No way. He had a great combine and will be long gone by No. 9. He could even go No. 1 overall.
RYAN, LIVERMORE CA
HEY KEVIN DO U THINK JERRY ANGELO HAS LOST HIS MIND IT SURE IS LOOKING THAT WAYTRYIN TO POINT THE FINGER @ LOVIE THE BEARS HAVE SPACEIN THE CAP WHY THE HECK WOULDNT THEY TRY TO GET A BIG NAME RECIEVER OR A PASS RUSHER?????
Kevin Seifert (2:40 PM)
Yeah, that is one interpretation of what Angelo said. I think he's wrong to ignore the receiver position the way he has, but I don't know that Lovie Smith is on the hot seat because of what Angelo said.
Eric (Eden Prairie, MN)
Kevin Seifert kicks butt. Which NFC North coaches do you see on the hot seat if their team doesn't preform up to par this year?
Kevin Seifert (2:42 PM)
Why thank you. I think it will be interesting in Green Bay if the Packers come back with a second consecutive losing season. Mike McCarthy is taking a bit of a risk changing defenses in mid-stream. He recently had his contract extended, but he's only had one winning season in his first three in Green Bay. Not saying he would be on the hot seat, but it would be interesting.
Dave (St. Paul, MN)
why dont the vikings go after J. Garcia, it seems so obvious. Why are we messing around with all these question marks at QB when we have a legitimate chance at winning the superbowl. GARCIA IS STILL OUT THERE! what are your thoughts?
Kevin Seifert (2:43 PM)
I can only assume they believe Garcia is too old (39) and doesn't have the arm strength anymore. That's debatable. But in the very short term, I agree he would probably be the best option.
Matthew (Columbia, SC)
The Vikes don't seem to be in too much of a rush to resign Matt Burk. Do they feel that they can fill this position with O'Sullivan or in the draft? Alex Mack, possibly?
Kevin Seifert (2:44 PM)
I do think they like Sullivan. The Birk thing has been odd. I'm not sure what's changed in the past 12 months. Now the are suddenly negotiating with him. After such a long delay, I think it's likely he'll want to test the market.
daniel: Martinsburg, WV
Aaron Curry #1? Best Available OT #20? what you think?
Kevin Seifert (2:45 PM)
(That's for the Lions, I presume.) ... Based on Curry's combine performance, you can't rule that out. I'll be blogging about that later Tuesday.
Jack (chicago)
I've heard rumors about Simms coming to chicago. Any truth to that? What about Leftwich?
Kevin Seifert (2:46 PM)
Those are the two names most often discussed. But Lovie Smith said over the weekend that he was giving strong consideration to having Hanie and Basanez battle for the No. 2 spot. That might be posturing, but in the end that could be what ends up happening.
Alan (Marquette, MI)
Welcome back from the combine Kevin. Do you see the Packers pursuing Malcolm Jenkins in the draft? If not, would a FA CB be an option? Pehaps DeAngelo Hall.
Kevin Seifert (2:47 PM)
I don't know that they'd pursue Hall. Jenkins' name has come up because he figures to be available when the No. 9 pick comes up, not necessarily because the Packers are in the market for a corner. Jenkins' combine performance might push him further down in the draft, however.
Ross (Nagiton, SD)
Hey Kevin.. with the Vikings having the 22nd pick, what position do you think gives them the most impact to help them get further into the playoffs? WR with return skills?
Kevin Seifert (2:48 PM)
It's pretty rare when a receiver steps right in as a rookie and produces. On the other hand, a right tackle can. If the Vikings can improve themselves at that position, they'll be a better playoff team.
MRL the Pearl (Owings Mills)
Vikings Vikings Vikings Vikings Vikings Vikings Vikings Vikings. Okay, now that I got your attention, any chance Percy Harvin could be available for the Ravens at 26? This draft is deep at receiver, so perhaps teams are going to wait until later to pick them up.
Kevin Seifert (2:49 PM)
Ha, good one. I don't see the Vikings drafting Harvin at No. 22, no.
Brad (Oshkosh, WI)
Whats your take on Aaron Kampman switching to OLB?
Kevin Seifert (2:49 PM)
I think it's going to be tough. The way to make it work is to design a role that maximizes his time as a pass rusher and minimizes the time he spends in coverage.
Joe ( Minneapolis)
The Vikes lack a true #1 WR, any chance they go after Houshmandzadeh?
Kevin Seifert (2:51 PM)
Almost none. They spent their money on Berrian last year.
Matt (Albany, NY)
Who would help the Rams more immediately, A. Curry or J. Smith?
Kevin Seifert (2:51 PM)
Wow. I think Smith steps in right away, but so does Curry. Ultimately it comes down to what positon is more important. I think left tackle is.
JOHN, PHILLY
Why does everyone in the media, especially ESPN, keep downplaying the fact the eagles need a #1 WR. I'm sorry, the last time I checked Kevin Curtis, Reggie Brown, Hank Baskett, Jason Avant, Greg Lewis were never starting caliber wide outs. I read Matt Mosley's blog often, and he keeps downplaying this need. OT help is needed, but a stud WR would do wonders for this team. A great O line is great but no sense of giving McNabb time to throw if he doesn't have anyone good to throw to. Seriously, how do you so called "experts" write and say some of the things you do in regards to this situation. When McNabb is seeking better playmakers, I'll take his word over your analysis. He actually plays football where you writers probably never played sports of any sort. By all means please respond.
Kevin Seifert (2:53 PM)
Mostly because we have a conspiracy against Philadelphia sports. Naturally. Seriously, I think the Eagles -- like half the other NFL teams -- could use a big-play receiver. Are they desperate? I don't know that you can argue that. Of course McNabb is going to want more. All quarterbacks do.
Drake (Carmel, IN)
Kevin please answer this... I've been on here since Matt Mosley waiting for my the 2:30-3:00 time slot. What kind of moves do you see the Bears making in free agency. Do you see them making a big move or small moves?
Kevin Seifert (2:54 PM)
Well by all means let's step up. If I had to guess, I'd say the Bears won't be making a big splash. Unless they make a run at Albert Haynesworth, which I don't think they will, there aren't many really impactful players out there. Maybe they pursue a Eugene Wilson or Nate Washington, but that would be the extent of it, I think.
Joshua (Houston)
When Darren Sharper went down in the playoffs last year I knew that game with the Eagles was over. Johnson was terrible that day, always out of place, and he doesn't even look like he's in shape. What are they doing to do at the safety position?
Kevin Seifert (2:55 PM)
Hate to disappoint you, but I would suspect Johnson will take over for Sharper as the full-time starter. Johnson will be better in his second year.
Jordan (Portland, OR)
Hey Kevin. What is your take with the whole Sage Rosenfels thing? Are the Vikings bringing him in to be the starter? Are they still looking at a trade for Cassel? Any other names out there that could come in and be the starter on day one?
Kevin Seifert (2:57 PM)
They won't trade for Cassel, no. It'll be a competition between Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson in training camp. My personal opinion is that Jackson would be the favorite considering Brad Childress' infatuation with him. I think Rosenfels wins only if he is lights out or if Jackson falls on his face.
Jeff (Agoura Hills, CA)
In baseball the contracts seem to be getting smaller this year because of the economy (minus the Yankees). Do you think we'll see the same in the NFL free agency and maybe even in rookie contracts?
Kevin Seifert (2:58 PM)
Interesting question, one we'll be tackling on ESPN.com tomorrow. Spending will be down in free agency, but mostly because teams have already locked up the best players either through huge extensions or by franchise tags. The rookie pay scale, however, is pretty much locked in and won't change.
David, Omaha NE
Hey Kevin, do you see the lions trying to trade for a qb, or will they stick with daunte this year and maybe give one of the Drews a shot?
Kevin Seifert (2:59 PM)
If I had to guess, I'd say it will be between Daunte and whoever the Lions draft.
Shaun, Augusta
Ok...If for some odd reason the lions pass up stafford for the number one pick and get an o-lineman, What Team will draft Him?
Kevin Seifert (3:00 PM)
Interesting question. If Kansas City doesn't take him at No. 3, he could end up falling to San Francisco at No. 10. That's if no one trades up.
Kevin Seifert (3:01 PM)
OK, thanks everyone for stopping by. Let's hand it over to my Tim Graham.
Kevin Seifert (3:01 PM)
That's "my good friend Tim Graham."
Kevin Seifert (3:01 PM)
I don't own him or anything.
Jason (Arkansas)
Hey Tim, Your awesome man, I'm a huge Raiders fan, sad to say, but do you see the Raiders getting any big free agents and what do think the Raiders are going to get with there first draft pick? Thanks, J
Tim Graham (3:02 PM)
I just wanted to post this question ...
Jason (Arkansas)
Hey Kevin, Your awesome man, I'm a huge Raiders fan, sad to say, but do you see the Raiders getting any big free agents and what do think the Raiders are going to get with there first draft pick? Thanks, J
Tim Graham (3:04 PM)
And then that one ...
Tim Graham (3:04 PM)
Genuine feelings being expressed there.
Joe (Buffalo, NY)
Hey tim, i always appreciate your AFC east insight so shed some knowledge on me. who do the bills need to get via trade, draft, or FA in order to make a serious push for a playoff birth
Tim Graham (3:05 PM)
They need a 4-3 pass rusher, a center, a No. 2 receiver with some size and general depth. They need to upgrade their second stringers at many positions.
David, NJ
Hey Tim. Long time fan of your AFC East Blog. Thanks! Sparano has made it clear that the Dolphins want to build through the draft. What do you think they will do? Lauranitis with their first round pick? Will Heyward-Bey or Kenny Britt still be available for their first of 2 second round picks? Do they maybe make a play for Haynesworth and trade Ferguson for draft picks?
Tim Graham (3:07 PM)
Laurinaitis just feels like the right pick there. Receiver in the second round is possible, but that's not usually a position Parcells goes after so early. They won't be in the market for Haynesworth.
Marc (Eatontown, NJ)
Hey Tim, I read your stuff all the time. I am a huge dolpins fan, and is just wondering do you think the fins have a chance to land a big time reciever through free agency and who do you think it could be. Also how do you feel about Pat Turner from USC having an effect of the fins?
Tim Graham (3:08 PM)
Unless it was a smoke screen, Tony Sparano pretty much said last week they're not interested in a big-time free-agent receiver.
Kyle (New Albany, IN)
I just read the needs you posted for the Bills, but I was wondering if they would maybe upgrade the quarterback position when there are lots of options this year?
Tim Graham (3:09 PM)
No, Trent Edwards is their guy. But they'll be looking for a veteran backup who's comfortable in that role.
TONY NC
BESIDES THE RAVENS LB DO THE JETS GO AFTER ANY BIG NAME FA AND WHO...MAYBE D.HALL
Tim Graham (3:10 PM)
I know he's not a big-timer, but many reports say they're going to pursue Ravens safety Jim Leonhard.
jason thomas (houston,tx)
i believe ray lewis would be a perfect fit for the dallas cowboys cause he would have order stored back there on that team...
Tim Graham (3:10 PM)
I'll let Jerry know.
Kellan (NY)
Tim, love the AFC East Blog....what are your thoughts on Fred Taylor?? Is he really considering a move from Jax to chilly Buffalo and NE? Where is he best suited filling in for an often injured Maroney or an often mischievous Lynch?
Tim Graham (3:12 PM)
Not working in Buffalo's favor is the fact he's visiting there today and New England on Wednesday. The Patriots are known for making a power play with visiting free agents. They sell the organization hard and like for the player to leave with a signed contract. Taylor probably wouldn't sign with the Bills before making his trip to New England ... and the facilities will look much better on Wednesday.
chauncey (teaneck)
Is Chad Henne ready to step in?
Tim Graham (3:13 PM)
I think he is, but he'll have to wait another year. Chad Pennington will be the starter in 2009.
Byrd(springfield,va)
I just saw on ESPN News that Barry Sanders is returning to the Lions?
Tim Graham (3:14 PM)
Did he leave something in his locker?
Jeff (Milton,ma)
ey tim...what do you see the pats doing this offseason considering there tag on Matt Casell and the need of Lb's under the age of 50 and a lights out corner like my man from oakland?
Tim Graham (3:15 PM)
It'll be a compelling offseason in New England. The first domino is Cassel, and we don't know enough about Brady's knee to get a read on what will happen next.
Jason (ohio)
the phins have a lot of needs which areas do yu see them working on first?
Tim Graham (3:15 PM)
I've been told center is their No. 1 priority.
Bill (NY)
Great stuff Tim! Not an AFC question but a Buffalo Bull question. Where do you see Drew Willy going / will he be drafted?
Tim Graham (3:16 PM)
I don't think he will get drafted, but he will compete in an NFL camp.
Justin (RI)
Hey Tim - Any chance the Jets bring Jeff Garcia in to manage the offense this year? If they pick up Scott or Lewis for D, a non-gunslinger vet QB like Garcia would be a nice fit for a team ready to win now.
Tim Graham (3:17 PM)
The Jets insist they're going to let the three guys on the roster compete, although drafting another is possible. It's a new regime. I'm going to have to take them at their word for now.
Julie (Omaha)
Which NFL division's ESPN blogger has the best 40 time?
Tim Graham (3:18 PM)
I guarantee I do.
Bryan (RI)
How you doing Tim? How many more years do you think Brady has left?
Tim Graham (3:19 PM)
If his knees hold up, he has five or six more years left. All great years? Probably not, but quarterbacks play until they're close to 40 these days.
Mike (West Hartford, CT)
Hey Tim - any chance the Bills make a huge splash in FA or via trade this offseason for a WR? Maybe anything resembling a pass-rush?
Tim Graham (3:21 PM)
The wild card aspect of this year's offseason with the Bills -- I think -- is that they might deviate from their usual M.O. in player acquisitions. They brought back Dick Jauron and didn't hire a GM. One of the few ways to shake things up would be an uncharacteristic, splashy free agent signing. I guess it's possible.
John (Tampa Bay)
Tim, do you see any free agents Ryan could snap up for the Jets to help turn their defense into something a little more like Baltimore's?
Tim Graham (3:23 PM)
Bart Scott, Ray Lewis or Jim Leonhard perhaps.
Xander (Philly)
You think pick 11 is too high for Pettigrew? I think he's a great option for the Bills.
Tim Graham (3:24 PM)
I don't think it's too high based on what I've seen of him in action, but his 40 time of 4.87 was surprisingly slow. Still, scouts think he's the best tight end in the draft.
Donnie Brasco (Miami)
With 3 of Miami's 4 DB's facing free agency and Will Allen reportedly being expendable how many new starters will Miami have in the backfield next year?
Tim Graham (3:25 PM)
Great question. I'll say three of them come back, with Renaldo Hill the likeliest to be replaced.
Marc -- NJ
I keep hearing about Bart Scott and Ray Lewis coming to NY, but do either of those players bring the attributes necessary to best compliment David Harris?
Tim Graham (3:26 PM)
They're studs. David Harris would be complementing them.
MArc (Eatontown, NJ)
Tim, how do you feel about Miami being the sleeper Arizona was last year. Maybe a home game for the AFC in 2009?
Tim Graham (3:28 PM)
History shows that teams that made HUGE one-season improvements slide back down a few games the next year. The Dolphins will have difficulties in 2009, but the fact they have money to spend under the cap gives them an opportunity to build their roster. Let's see how they do in free agency.
Josh (Buffalo)
Should the Bills be hot on the trail of Jeff Saturday??
Tim Graham (3:28 PM)
The Bills should at least be monitoring.
Silly Sammy, Cincinatti Ohio
Will the Jets win a Super Bowl in the next 50 years?
Tim Graham (3:29 PM)
Hmmmm ... I'll say ...
Tim Graham (3:29 PM)
Yes. I'm going with the odds that a team has a 1-in-32 shot each year.
T-Bone (Rochester, NY)
Jason Brown vs Jeff Saturday... which one will be Miami's starting center next year?
Josh( Atlanta )
HEY PAT.........Falcons should pick up Channing Crowder and Jermaine Phillips in FA, then take Cushing or Clay Matthews in first round, and Jared Cook TE in second. What do think about this scenario?? RESIGN FOXWORTH!!!
Tim Graham (3:30 PM)
Maybe neither, but if I had my pick I would take Brown because of his age.
Tim Graham (3:31 PM)
Thanks for stopping by, folks. NFC South bossman Pat Yasinskas is up next.
Pat Yasinskas (3:31 PM)
Like your scenarios very much. That would be perfect. As for Foxworth, I think he's going to at least take the market. Thanks to the great Tim Graham of the AFC East for the last half our and let's move on to the NFC South.
joe (ny)
where will anquan boldin end up? how bout housh? fred taylor? i am a patriots fan. i also like chicago. is there any chance hanesworth ends up there?
Pat Yasinskas (3:33 PM)
Boldin or Housh could end up in Tampa. My money's on Haynewsorth ending up there, too.
Mike Norfolk Va
Pat how much cap do the Bucs really have been i've hearing 55 mil?
Pat Yasinskas (3:34 PM)
I think you're hearing just about right at the moment. Now, keep in mind that's all very much in flux with guys getting re-signed, restructured or cut.
Greg (Austin)
The Saints can create more than $12M in cap space by releasing Jason David, Jamar Nesbit, Kevin Kaesviharn, Mark Simoneau, Hollis Thomas, Mark Brunell, and Brian Young along with having contracts that can be restructured like the $25M+ of cap space tied up in Will Smith ($9.4M), Reggie Bush ($12.1), and Mike McKenzie ($4.5M). If the Saints really want to be "active," can't they?
Pat Yasinskas (3:35 PM)
Yes, too a degre and new guys can be structured so they're not a very big first-year hit. That's true for every team.
Dan (Washington D.C.)
The saints dont need much on offense but do you see them doing anything in FA to help there high school caliber secondary out. What FA's are avaible that the saints might go after
Pat Yasinskas (3:36 PM)
They've gotta work on secondary -- Gibril Wilson, Jermaine Phillips or somebody like that would be a nice safety. As for CB, might be best using 1st round pick thee. Vonate Davis or Jenkins?
Dan, Toronto
Seriously though, Should I just go ahead an order my Haynesworth jersey in Red and Pewter? 55 mil in cap room, and a huge need at DT. I dont think a free agent pick up could ever make more sense. Plus it would allow us to pursue skill position players in the draft. Moreno at 19, Robiskie at 50?
Pat Yasinskas (3:37 PM)
Yes, makes sense, but don't buy jersey yet. Redskins and some others may be lurking.
Poop Doggy Dog (the A-T-L)
What do the Falcons really think they can get in return for Michael Vick? Or are they just getting a laugh out of the idea?
Pat Yasinskas (3:38 PM)
They know they're not getting much. If anything at all, maybe 6th or 7th rounder. But they'll probably end up just cutting him.
Stephen: (Chapel Hill, NC):
Anyone on the market the Panthers could target to fill in at corner after they (presumably) let Ken Lucas go? If not, can they find someone in the draft that can contribute without having a first rounder?
Pat Yasinskas (3:39 PM)
Just a rumbling I'm hearing. Not saying it's going to happen. But you might see Lucas traded, instead of released. Stay tuned.
Wilson Boone nC
Why did the falcons bother putting Vick on the block, does anyone know what his value is? Why did they not wait until he had at least been reinstated?
Pat Yasinskas (3:39 PM)
Quite frankly, they'd like to wash their hands of him and have it over with. But I don't think there will be a trade. I think they'll just cut him once he's reinstated.
cutcp, clemson
Panthers' O-line played so well last year partly due to a terrific job by the backups. Now they seem to be leaving town. Can anything be done to save those guys?
Pat Yasinskas (3:40 PM)
If I were Panthers, I'd keep Hangartner -- very versatile. But he can probably get a shot to start elsewhere.
Cory (Kansas City,MO)
Do I have to wait till a certain time to get my questions about the Chiefs answered?
Pat Yasinskas (3:41 PM)
Yes, check the chatter list. We're doing NFC South right now. Sorry to those from other divisions, but your division guys can answer your questions better than I.
chris ( philadelphia,pa) [via mobile]
Do you serious consider luke mccown and the furture of the bucs ?
Pat Yasinskas (3:42 PM)
No, can't do that yet. But he'll at least get a shot. They'll add another QB at some point, trust me.
Paul New Orleans Louisiana
What will the Saints do about Vilma?
Pat Yasinskas (3:42 PM)
Think you'll see him re-signed right after free agency starts.
Nathan (Cary, NC)
Do the Panthers make any type of run at derek Anderson?
Pat Yasinskas (3:43 PM)
Possible. If the price tag drops a bit. Supposedly, around a No. 3 right now. If it gets to No. 4 or below, I'd take a shot.
Mike Norfolk Va
Pat do you think Buchanon resigns in Tampa if not who do we go after?
Pat Yasinskas (3:44 PM)
I know the Bucs are making an effort right now to keep him. You could hear something there in the next 48 hours or so.
Nathan (Cary, NC)
Lucas being traded? Any idea to whom?
Pat Yasinskas (3:44 PM)
Can't say. Just saying there are some rumblings. Might not happen and they may end up just cutting him. But keep an eye between now and Thursday night.
Zach Sazama
What do you think of Tim Tebow being picked up by carolina in the 3rd roundish
Pat Yasinskas (3:45 PM)
He's not in this year's draft. Wait til 2010.
Tony(Tampa)
Does Gaines Adams for the Bucs appear to be a bust? He has only one move(edge rush) and not much else. Maybe Haynesworth will take the pressure off Adams?
Pat Yasinskas (3:46 PM)
Give him another year and time with a new staff and maybe better DLs around him. There is raw talent there.
Kyle (Tampa Florida)
Is Josh Freeman a good fit in Tampa?
Pat Yasinskas (3:47 PM)
I wouldn't go rookie QB if I were Bucs. Go get someone with a little experience to compete with McCown. Might not excite you, but I'm thinking someone like Losman, Grossman, etc.
Marty (Elkin, NC)
With Hurney being of fire right now in terms of making the right moves, can he be steadfast on getting 2 First Round Draft Picks... FYI, Tebow isn't coming out to be drafted this year either
Pat Yasinskas (3:48 PM)
Yeah, that's what I said. Tebow's not coming out this year. I think Hurney's gonna try to get as close to those 2 first-round picks as possible. He can be pretty stubborn when he wants to.
Jim (Florida)
Pat....I read a rumor that the Eagles were working on a trade with the Saints to send Lito Shepperd for Lance Moore. Any truth to that?
Pat Yasinskas (3:49 PM)
Don't do it. Keep Lance Moore. You can get a decent CB elsewhere.
Andrew (Orlando, FL)
Do you feel McCown is the answer in Tampa? What about Josh Johnson? The Bucs (with free agent acquisitions) are looking like a team without a QB in my eyes. Do they take another in the draft?
Pat Yasinskas (3:50 PM)
They'll get another QB -- again, someone to compete with McCown. Forget Josh Johnson for now. He's a project. Could develop into something, but nowhere near ready to play.
Nick (Tampa)
Do you see Michael Clayton re-signing with the Bucs before the free agency period starts or is the team going to let him "test the market"?
Pat Yasinskas (3:51 PM)
There's talk between Clayton and the Bucs and he says he'd like to stay. But I think you'll see him at least testing the market.
Gabe (Raleigh, NC)
You need to learn to answer questions
Pat Yasinskas (3:51 PM)
Dude, I'm doing my best. Do you realize there are 8,157 questions on here right now.
T. Chipp (Jacksonville, FL)
Pat - Thomas dimitroff and his staff had such major success last year in free agency Do you think they will look to fill the now empty safety spot with a free agent such as gibril wilson or promote thomas decoud and draft one?
Pat Yasinskas (3:52 PM)
Think youth with the Falcons.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Could Byron Leftwich be a possibility for Tampa or Carolina?
Pat Yasinskas (3:52 PM)
I'd like him more in Carolina than Tampa Bay. And go Dunmore Bucks!!!
kr
what are the bucs chances of getting alber thaynesworth
Pat Yasinskas (3:53 PM)
They're gonna make a strong run.
Josh (Greensboro, NC)
What are you thinking about peppers? What are they really going to get for him?
Pat Yasinskas (3:54 PM)
It's gonna be a long drawn-out process. Maybe some trade around draft time. Maybe they force him to just play with tag.
Russell (Clermont, FL)
What are some realistic WR options for the Bucs?
Pat Yasinskas (3:55 PM)
I'm saying Houshamandzadeh. I know there are strong rumblings about him elsewhere. But Bucs have cap room and money talks.
Dan (Charlotte)
Pat, Gross says Peppers would stay in Carolina with the right situation. What do you think that is?
Pat Yasinskas (3:57 PM)
I still think Pep goes at some point. It's all posturing right now and it make take time to play out, but that's my buess.
Brad (Tampa, FL)
Do you think Marvin Harrison could end up in Tampa with the Bucs?
Pat Yasinskas (3:58 PM)
Nope, think younger in Tampa. Gruden's gone.
John (Greensboro)
Can the Panthers sign anyone based ont he contract for Gross and Peppers getting tagged? Do they have any room for F.A.?
Pat Yasinskas (3:59 PM)
They can always make room. Contract restructures and I think you'll see some cuts coming in the next day or two.
Nathan (Charlotte, NC)
Do you really think that the Panthers would keep Julius Peppers for the 2009 season when they could just release him and get back the cap room instead of wasting it on a guy who isnt going to play?
Pat Yasinskas (4:00 PM)
You really think he'd sit out an entire season and give up $17 million if push comes to shove. I still think he'll be gone before all is said and done, but anything's pssible. With that, I'm going to hand it off to the great James Walker of the AFC North. Thanks.
Chase (Baltimore, MD)
Any chance the Ravens won't be able to keep Ray and Bart Scott? Also, any chance that we will be able to get a big name free agent?
James Walker (4:05 PM)
I don't see Baltimore losing both players. The Ravens have enough money to make at least one a very good offer.
Thomas EM(Philly)
Do the Eagles have a chance of landing Larry Fitzgerald in a Possible trade that involves Lito and their two first round picks?
James Walker (4:06 PM)
Larry Fitzgerald is not on the trade market.
Tim from Tampa, Fl
Being a Steelers fan, I must say I am hoping to see as many LB's from the Ravens leave as possible! Any chance the Brownies (I know it would be "crazy" to see Ray Ray in Orange) make a run??? Don't they need a splash and LB's to boot. Talk about a new wrinkle to the AFC North!!!!!
James Walker (4:08 PM)
Very little chance, Tim. This is Ray Lewis' final contract. So he wants to cash in, but he also wants to play for a winner. He'd have a much better chance of that in Baltimore, Dallas or New York (Jets).
Joe (Chicago, IL)
James - hearing anything about Cedric Benson re-upping with the Bengals?
James Walker (4:10 PM)
Benson is going to test the market. Cincinnati still has some reservations so it likely didn't give Benson the type of contract he is looking for right away. So he's going to see if he can get that money somewhere else, while the Bengals get to see his worth on the market as well.
Scott, LA
James - I am a big 49ers and I wanted to know your thoughts on their chances with Housh? And if you have heard any other rumors about what they might do in Free Agency?
James Walker (4:12 PM)
Hey Scott. You have a great blogger in Mike Sando, but I suggest you read my Wednesday column on Housh and his possible landing spots. San Francisco is high on the list.
Mike (Philadelphia, PA)
Do the Eagles have a chance of landing a big name WR before the start of next season?
James Walker (4:13 PM)
The Eagles will give it a good shot this year, and Donovan McNabb will be watching. Personally, I think Philadelphia is a great fit for T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
Jed Baltimore, md
Can you see the lions going for Derek Anderson at all during this free agency
James Walker (4:15 PM)
Not for the price tag that is being reported. There will be no trades involving D.A. and a first-round pick this year. The Browns will be fortunate to get a good second rounder.
Jameson (College Park, MD)
James, between Dawan Landry and Jim Leonhard, who do you see the Ravens re-signing? Leonhard made a strong case for staying last season.
James Walker (4:17 PM)
Landry is the guy. He's bigger and more athletic for the position. Plus, he will be cheaper coming off an injury. Leonhard played his way into starter money and he will get it elsewhere most likely.
Mark H (Greensboro, NC)
James, Do you see either Baltimore or Cleveland making a play for Julius Peppers?
James Walker (4:18 PM)
Nope. The only way I could see Baltimore making a run was if the team decided to let Terrell Suggs hit the open market. The Ravens could have used Peppers as leverage to get Suggs to re-sign. Other than that, I don't see Peppers in the AFC North.
Brian (Lansing, Mi)
What chance do the Cowboys have of landing Ray Lewis?
James Walker (4:21 PM)
I would say there is a decent chance. Both sides have interest, so that always makes for a possibility. The best chance for Ray, though, is in Baltimore.
Mitch (Coral Springs, FL)
Hey James, what's up? Anyway, could you see the Steelers re-signing Nate Washington or sticking Limas Sweed in the slot?
James Walker (4:23 PM)
I can see both. It's really a 50-50 chance at this point. Pittsburgh likes Washington, but it wants to see if anyone overpays for him. That will determine what happens.
Eric (Savannah, GA)
JW if I'm not mistaken your a Maryland guy just as I am. So what are they saying back home about Bart Scott and Ray Lewis? Do we have a chance to keep both?
James Walker (4:24 PM)
"They" the people or "they" the team? I don't live in Maryland, so I'm sure what people/fans are saying in Baltimore. As far as the league and the team, the feeling is the Ravens would be hard-pressed to keep both, but it's not impossible.
Dave (Memphis)
If you were a team looking to improve at WR (and a lot of teams are), would you rather have Nate Washington (younger, cheaper) or Housh?
James Walker (4:26 PM)
Nothing against Nate, but T.J. is the more complete WR.
jay nyc [via mobile]
i need my jets to make a decision and im hoping its to dump barton and grab scott because i cant see the ravens paying lewis reed and suggs also
James Walker (4:26 PM)
You would love Bart Scott in New York.
Chris (Mason, OH)
JW, what are the chances the Bengals address the offensive line problems in free agency since it seems that the best prospects are long gone by pick 6?
James Walker (4:28 PM)
This is a tough question, because that is possibility that the top two tackles could be gone by No. 6. But at the same time, the Bengals do not spend a lot of money in free agency. I doubt they would do so this year, so I think Cincinnati will hope for the best in the draft.
joey ( pittsburg ,pa) [via mobile]
Jw . Would you agree that you believe the bengals should draft a qb with at least there 3rd pick just in case palmer runs into troubles with his elbow again?
James Walker (4:30 PM)
The Bengals have so many other needs that a third rounder should be better spent on a player they think can help them now. Cincinnati should get veteran help behind Carson.
James Walker (4:31 PM)
Ok, guys. I'm going to hand it off to NFC West blogger Mike Sando. Thanks for the great questions.
Jason( Ft.Washington ,Md)
Hey Mike, My question is, When the niners are on the clock with their 10th pick who do they select? Brian Orakpo or Eugene Monroe
Mike Sando (4:34 PM)
Thanks for starting us off, Jason. The book on Orakpo is that he isn't necessarily a dynamic pass rusher. More of a hustle player. If that is true, perhaps they go another direction. I'm intrigued by the idea of adding a front-line left tackle, then moving Staley to the right side. The 49ers already have a good center signed for a while. They would have, in theory, bookend tackles as well.
Landon (Peoria,AZ)
If Warner i signed, the word is that Matt Leniart will ask for a trade. With that being said, do you think the Cardinals should package both Boldin and Leniart for a TE and RB? If so which team would you consider?
Mike Sando (4:35 PM)
I don't think so at all. I think the Cardinals should keep Boldin and Leinart while addressing tight end and running back in the draft. We too often discuss personnel moves as either-or propositions. The Cardinals are in position to have it both ways. They can have Warner and Leinart. They can have Fitzgerald and Boldin. The draft is deep in tight ends and running backs and outside linebackers. The Cardinals should look for ways to have it all this offseason.
Jeff (Denver)
Do you see the Cardinals having any chance of landing Ray Lewis?
Mike Sando (4:36 PM)
Not very likely.
Greg (Bellingham WA)
With so many injuries last season, what are the Seahaks going to do to improve the position?
Mike Sando (4:37 PM)
I'll assume you are talking about the receiver position. They'll need some better luck with injuries. Deion Branch has looked good when he's been healthy. Nate Burleson is progressing pretty well. I think they should consider a WR early in the draft -- if they're convinced Michael Crabtree is going to be a great one -- and they should consider T.J. Houshmandzadeh if the price is not prohibitive.
DANTE MASS
hey mike do you think the seahawks trade matt hasslebeck or does he start over seneca wallace.do the hawks go after a running back or are they ok with juluis jones carrying the load.
Mike Sando (4:38 PM)
I expect the Seahawks to keep Matt Hasselbeck and start him over Seneca Wallace. I also expect the Seahawks to draft a quarterback. Julius Jones will play, but he will share carries in Greg Knapp's offense. T.J. Duckett will get carries. The Seahawks could also add another back in the draft, assuming Maurice Morris leaves.
Pat (Fort Morgan, CO)
I know you like the Niners taking an OT, but what if they go defense, and Raji is still on the board? Do they take Raji instead of the 3-4 pass-rushers like Maybin and Brown?
Mike Sando (4:39 PM)
I said I was intrigued by the idea of adding a front-line left tackle. Best-case scenario would be for the 49ers to land a difference-making pass rusher in that 10th slot. I would probably lean toward the 3-4 pass rushers over a defensive tackle.
Dustin (Idaho)
Will the niners make a splash in free agency? Their cap situation is decent.
Mike Sando (4:41 PM)
Their cap situation is terrific. When I first analyzed it, I saw a team well-positioned to make an aggressive move in free agency. It also makes sense that Jed York, in his first year as team president, would want to make a bold move. But I keep hearing GM Scot McCloughan talk about re-signing some of their core players for the long term, and making that a priority. I'm not certain what approach they will take, but they have been aggressive in the past.
Mike Sando (4:43 PM)
To follow up on that, I do think the 49ers have thought their talent was good enough to win. The difference this season is that they have coaches in place who have pledged to install systems that match the personnel a little more closely. Perhaps they feel as though they don't need to be as aggressive?
Cody (Mesa, AZ)
What are the chances the Cards look at LT if his talks break down? Right down the street from SD, warm weather, potential contender.
Mike Sando (4:44 PM)
I think they would have some interest, but I would expect the Chargers to find a way to get that one done.
Mike (Iowa)
Is Everette Brown's height really that big of a deal?? Isn't James Harrison for the Steelers around 6ft. tall and he said it helps him stay low to rush the passer; I'd love to have him at 10 for the Niners!
Mike Sando (4:45 PM)
You are presumably referring to Rob Rang's assessment on the blog the other day. The pass rusher from Louisville, now with the Broncos, was a short guy. I would generally favor going with what scouts see on video.
Scott, LA
Mike - Do you think that the 49ers will try to get a deep threat receiver in either the draft or free agency? Or do you think they will see if Josh Morgan will end up being that guy for them? He showed the potential to be that threat for them last year when he got the chance
Mike Sando (4:46 PM)
I don't really see deep-threat receivers available in free agency. I do think they'll try to address that in the draft if feasible, but some of that could depend on the quarterback situation. Shaun Hill isn't a big deep-ball thrower.
Silvio Guerrero Herrera
Mike...Vick or Sanchez (USC) which is better fit for the 49ers?
Mike Sando (4:48 PM)
The 49ers have already said -- twice -- they are not interested in Michael Vick. I thought Sanchez seemed like an impressive guy from what I saw at the combine. The question really comes down to whether the 49ers have the stomach to take another quarterback early after they struggled to develop Alex Smith as the No. 1 overall choice.
Matt (Seattle)
Are the Hawks looking to make any big free agent signings? Is TJ a realistic potential signing? If they did get Housh, would they still consider Crabtree at 4?
Mike Sando (4:48 PM)
I don't think they would do Houshmandzadeh and Crabtree. Signing a free-agent receiver for significant money would probably tell us the Seahawks planned to go another direction in the draft.
Randy (gilbert, AZ)
Mike love the blog. Any chance the Cards will go after Jason Brown???
Mike Sando (4:50 PM)
Without accounting for how he would fit the scheme, I think that move makes a great deal of sense in theory. The Cardinals need to strengthen the middle of their line, particularly if they plan to bring back Kurt Warner, who does not move very well.
Andy (Illinois)
Will Torry Holt become a cap causality? The rams are supposedly tight on cap space after tagging Atogwe. If cut, where do you think Holt winds up? Chicago seems to make a lot of sense.
Mike Sando (4:51 PM)
I feel pretty certain Torry Holt will become a cap casualty. The savings would be $8 million. That's a huge difference. I do not know where Holt would wind up, but the Bears could do worse.
John (Hampton, VA)
Will Warner's deal with the Cards get done prior to FA starting? And, assuming neither Arrington or Edge return, where do the Cards target to share carries with Hightower?
Mike Sando (4:53 PM)
I could see the Cardinals considering a running back in the first round. They had RB and CB on their radar in the drat a year ago. They were hoping value lined up with those needs, and it certainly did. They got Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. I see them hoping the right back is there this year. As for Warner, I have thought a deal would get done before free agency. The Cardinals need to get that one done, I think.
Jarrod (Sacramento, CA)
If you were Billy Devaney would you draft Aaron Curry, Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe? If the Rams draft Smith or Monroe, would that signal the end of the Orlando Pace era or could one of them (including Alex Barron) play guard this year? Do you think Curry can play middle LB in a 4-3 defense and if he ends up playing strong side LB is he worth the cost of the #2 overall pick?
Mike Sando (4:57 PM)
You probably need to go with the tackle in that situation, but I'm intrigued by the idea of adding someone as dynamic as Curry to that locker room. The Rams are building under a defensive-minded coach. That coach needs someone on his side of the ball to set the standard, set the tone, etc. Curry would seem to be that guy. Some have wondered if he would play the middle, given the Rams' desire to get stronger there. If Curry is as dynamic as people say, I think you draft him and then find ways to use him. I think the Rams will make a decision on Orlando Pace well before the draft. Releasing Pace might tell us the Rams planned to go that direction in the draft. I would not move Pace or Barron to guard.
Steve (Issaquah, Wa)
Mike, Do you think it would be a bad move for the Seahawks to take Curry and switch to having 4 linebackers and 3 d linemen?
Mike Sando (4:58 PM)
They do not really have the DE types to do that. The Seahawks have drafted and signed all these 4-3 defensive ends (Kerney, Jackson, Tapp). Making that type of transition would carry some risks, I think.
Marie (San Francisco, CA)
Do you think that the 49ers would pass on getting a pass rusher or an offensive linemen if Michael Crabtree's injury causes him to fall to them?
Mike Sando (4:59 PM)
Yes, I think they would strongly consider Michael Crabtree under those circumstances.
Jason (Greeley, CO)
Besides the Cardinals, do any other teams have shared duty at offensive or defensive coordinator postions? I would assume what the Cardinals are doing is rare.
Mike Sando (5:00 PM)
It is pretty rare but not unprecedented. I just can't think of other examples off the top of my head. Ken Whisenhunt will call plays.
Scott (Gilbert, AZ)
Hey Mike, realistically, what do you think the Cards are going to do with Edge?? I mean, I know there is all kinds of talks out there right now about him being released, and that he wants to be released, but, isn't it in their and his best interest to figure this out now??
Mike Sando (5:01 PM)
The Cardinals gain no advantage, beyond increased salary-cap room, by making that decision now. They need to make sure they have someone better before they release him.
Jeremy (Seattle)
Mike, can you please address a Seahawks question about the major problem we have at the Center position? The TJ/Crabtree questions that have been circulating for the last month are getting old! Not your fault though...
Mike Sando (5:03 PM)
I don't see center as a "major" problem. It's a question mark. The Seahawks need to address the position given that Chris Spencer is entering the final year of his deal, and given that Spencer has not proven himself to be the answer.
Chris (Norman,OK)
Deangelo Hall make sense for the 49ers? If so, could they move Walt Harris to safety and get some improvement?
Mike Sando (5:05 PM)
As I recall, Walt Harris was playing safety when the Patriots completed that long touchdown pass to Randy Moss down the middle. I think the 49ers need to get younger and more athletic at safety.
john (seattle)
I have found that you give little to no insight that goes beyond what serious fans already know. do some research. talk to some people.
Mike Sando (5:06 PM)
I do lots of research and talk to lots of people. But I do not throw stuff off the wall, so I'm not going to sit here and tell you how free agency is going to go.
Myles (Los Angeles)
When do you think the Seahawks look at a QB in the draft? If they have the pick of the litter at 4, whom would they go after?
Mike Sando (5:08 PM)
I do not expect the Seahawks to take a quarterback in that fourth slot after speaking with scouts at the combine who didn't see Mark Sanchez as a safe enough pick.
Chris (Norman,OK)
Thanks for answering my question Mike, I'm a big fan. Is Andre Smith out of the first round now, or could the 49ers if they trade back a bit and get him around 18 or so?
Mike Sando (5:10 PM)
Andre Smith has time to salvage himself a little bit. I think the 49ers need someone who has shown more consistency on and off the field, however. They already invested lots in Jonas Jennings, without the desired results. Perhaps they should let Smith be someone else's gamble.
Kevin (Tucson, AZ)
Will Pettigrew drop to the Cardinals and would they be foolish to pass up on his talent?
Mike Sando (5:11 PM)
I do not think he'll be available there. I do think he would make sense for Arizona. He catches the ball well and blocks well. His times weren't great, but let's see if he can improve them a little this spring.
Ryan (Vanvouver)
Are the Seahawks going to be coming into next year healthy?
Mike Sando (5:12 PM)
Doubtful. I think they'll still have some question marks about Patrick Kerney and possibly Walter Jones. Kerney's durability will be a concern again.
Kelly (NC)
I do not mean to sound ungrateful Mike but I have asked a question about the Browns twice and you have yet to respond but you answer, and re-answer, other people's questions. What can you tell me about the Browns?
Mike Sando (5:13 PM)
I cover the NFC West. James Walker handled the AFC North cat.
Jamie (Ozark, MO)
What are other potential landing spots for Kurt Warner provided the Cardinals do not get him signed to an extension before free agency begins?
Mike Sando (5:14 PM)
I don't think anywhere makes nearly as much sense as Arizona. Minnesota would be the runnerup because the Vikings play in a dome and they were a playoff team last season. I just can't see Warner starting over somewhere else at age 38.
Voice of reason (everywhere)
so you can see the future mike? predicting injuries for the seahawks? what does your crystal ball say about your job? ending soon i hope?
Mike Sando (5:15 PM)
Kerney's shoulder will be a concern as long as he continues playing.
Cal (Nashville, TN
Do you see the Niners going after either Bart Scott or Ray Lewis since Mike Singletary has a relationship with both of them from his time as the Ravens LB coach? Either one would be an upgrade over Takeo Spikes and would create the best inside LB duo in the league with P-Willie.
Mike Sando (5:16 PM)
I would love that type of move for the 49ers but I question whether those players would view the 49ers' situation optimistically when they target potential playoff teams.
Mike 6 Burgh PA
Who do you think cries more about their loss to the Steelers, Seahawks or Cardinal?
Mike Sando (5:17 PM)
Seahawks all the way. Their head coach complained openly about the officiating. That took it to a new level.
Mike Sando (5:18 PM)
We've gone 17 minutes past the window here. Back to the NFC West blog. Thanks for dropping by.
