Burke (toronto)
Should i trade kaberle?
Pierre LeBrun (2:03 PM)
Burkey, I've told you many times, only if you get a huge package _ first round pick, blue chip prospect and NHL-ready roster player
Tim, Guam
With Tortolla at the reins, will the Rangers blow off Avery and bring in a veteran gun to bolster offense ?
Pierre LeBrun (2:06 PM)
Guam ! Wow ! Avery is a Ranger my friend, picked up on re-entry waivers today. Myguess is he'll play tomorrow night
Ryan, Houghton Lake, Michigan
Will Detroit pick up a gritty forward such as Ian Laperrier or Chris Neil on or before the trade deadline?
Pierre LeBrun (2:08 PM)
Ryan, that is exactly what Ken Holland hopes to do _ add a gritty forward. He feels he never has replaced the retired Dallas Drake. Lapperriere and Neil are good options although I must tell you at this point Colorado and Ottawa, respectively, are still trying to re-sign those guys... So we'll see
Chris (Dresden, Ohio)
What are the talks about what Columbus is planning on doing? I don't think they need much, but they could use another Center.
Pierre LeBrun (2:12 PM)
Chris, I blogged about that earlier today, check it out, but basically they are looking real hard at trying to acquire one or two forwards. One guy they like a lot is Antoine Vermette in Ottawa. I know they also like Connolly. Maybe Antropov in Toronto as well. Keep your fingers crossed !
Mike (Philadelphia, PA)
I want to see Bouwmeester in a Flyers uniform yesterday. Would a package of Randy Jones, Mike Knuble, James vanRiemsdyk (and maybe a pick) get it done? If not, what are you hearing the Panthers are asking for? From the Flyers stand point, I assume Giroux is untouchable.
Pierre LeBrun (2:14 PM)
The Flyers are still trying hard to get Bouwmeester Mike, I can tell you that. The Panthers want a forward and a defensemen, preferrablly, that can play right now to help them in their playoff drive.
Michael (Manayunk, PA)
First, I want to thank Tomas Kaberle for rejecting a trade to the Flyers for Jeff Carter last season. Now that his name is being shopped again, how come you don't hear the Flyers name as a buyer?
Pierre LeBrun (2:15 PM)
ha ha, no kidding Michael, good thing Carter remained a Flyer ! The Flyers are really go-ho on Bouwmeester and that's where their focus is. And as I reported this morning, they've also inquired about Derek Morris in Phoenix. Toronto is asking a ton for Kaberle and that's scaring some teams away
Alex L.
A lot of talks have been about the Canadiens landing a top offensive players. Do you see them landing a big name before the deadline?
Pierre LeBrun (2:18 PM)
Well the big name that won't go away is Olli Jokinen of Phoenix although there are other teams chasing him as well.
melinda
Pronger is going nowhere. Neids on the other hand may be
Pierre LeBrun (2:19 PM)
Actually, Ducks GM Bob Murray told Niedermayer last week that he won't be moved. Pronger could be moved before the deadline tomorrow but he just as easily not be moved until the entry draft in June. That's the dilemma the Ducks are facing. Mind you, I was told about an hour ago that right now they're not impressed on the offers for Pronger
Zach W. (Sacramento, California)
There has been so much discussion about the missing pieces that already strong teams like the Caps, Wings, Bruins and Devils will be seeking at the deadline. I just haven't heard anything specific about what the Sharks may be looking for. Now, I'm pretty confident in the team Doug Wilson put together during the off season - but the silence is killing me. Does the world think that the Sharks are good enough to stand pat, or are they just as clueless as I about what piece may be missing?
Pierre LeBrun (2:21 PM)
Doug has told a lot of us that he feels he made his moves last summer with Blake/Boyle/Lukowich/McLellan. But I still think if the right offer pops up for a guy that's won a Cup he'll take a hard look at it. I really believe had the Ducks decided to move Niedermayer that San Jose would have called on that one.
Pierre LeBrun (2:24 PM)
Jason, zero chance. Backstrom signed a $24-million, four-year extention with Minnesota this morning
Howie Cumberland Ri
Hey whats up with the Bruins. Any blueline help coming. Team looks like it could use some more size as well anything Bruin?
Pierre LeBrun (2:25 PM)
Howie, the Bruins I'm told are looking at Derek Morris but I also think they'll keep an eye on what transpires with Chris Pronger and Tomas Kaberle
Zack (St. Louis)
Whats the latest on the blues? Buyers? Sellers? How about the return of Pronger to St. Louis for a playoff run?
Pierre LeBrun (2:26 PM)
Tonight's a big game in that regard. I wonder if they lose if they won't move Tkachuk. But if they win... they may keep him. And yes, they remain interesting in Pronger.
mike newmarket, ontario
how far is pittburgh from the salary cap. how about morris and jokinen to pitt.
Pierre LeBrun (2:29 PM)
Well the Pens put Miro Satan ($3.5 million) on waivers today... so either he'll be claimed by another team or they'll send him to the AHL and that'll clear up some big cap space. I think the Pens are trying to add a big piece but not sure who
Andrew (Central Jersey, NJ)
Do you think the Rangers will be making any deals involving Chris Drury, Scott Gomez or Wade Redden?
Pierre LeBrun (2:34 PM)
Only if Glen Sather has a gun in his hand. Those guys are hard to move, terrible contracts. Gomez has been offered around to several teams over the last month and at this point no takers. GMs are scared of the cap going down in 2010-11 and long-term deals are hard to move
Jared Cranberry PA
What are the chances of the pens bringing back Jarkko Ruutu?
Pierre LeBrun (2:35 PM)
Jared, I know the Pens spoke to Ottawa about it but late last night I was told those talks were off.... so tough to say
Marty, Richmond VA
Hey Guys, thanks for all the good work this season! do you think the Pens will make a big move, or are they more likely to make a couple of small moves to add grit and stock up on draft picks?
Pierre LeBrun (2:36 PM)
Marty as I said earlier, with Satan being put on waivers today I think the Pens are definitely trying to do something big before tomorrow.
Dave (eSellOut.com)
Can you please break down the value of a 1st round draft pick? To me sometimes teams trade them way to easily come the trading deadline.
Pierre LeBrun (2:37 PM)
Depends on the year. This is considered a strong, strong draft this year so teams seem less willing to move them. Obvioulsy a top-10 pick is way more valuable than a first-roundpick from Detroit or San Jjose or Boston (near 25-30) overall.
Danny T. Fort Rucker, AL
Is George McPhee going to make a move? The Caps cannot possibly think that they can win the Cup this year with the current state of defense and/or goaltending. To stand pat seems to say, "Well, we'll just make another run at it next year."
Pierre LeBrun (2:38 PM)
Danny, as I blogged about earlier today, the Caps are one of three teams with Philly and Boston taking a hard look at Derek Boucher
Joe (Toronto, ON)
Do you feel that Bob Gainey is finished dealing as he'd rather focus on next season and avoid selling the farm for a rental or two? Or do you feel that there is a sense of urgency to salvage the club's centennial season and piece together a team worthy of a celebration?
Pierre LeBrun (2:40 PM)
I think they want to try and win this year without cripping the farm if that makes any sense. In other words, if you trade Higgins or O'Byrne or somebody like that, that's not too crippling...I do think Gainey is working on one last big move
Stuart, Denver CO
I'm a big Avs fan, and this season is just plain depressing. (hopefully we can drop low enough to have a chance at Tavares/Hedman). what is the best move for our organization moving forward? would getting rid of Smyth/Hejduk for some young blood be beneficial? if so what could we expect in exchange for them?
Pierre LeBrun (2:42 PM)
Stuard, your team had a great run for a long time but it's time to replenish the young depth in that organization... If a team is interested in picking up Smyth or Hannan or Salei or Hejduk or Leopold or Clark or Liles I would serioulsy consider it for draft picks and prospects
St, Louis
what dose st louis have that thd ducks would want for prongs
Pierre LeBrun (2:43 PM)
I think the Ducks would love to get a first-round pick and David Perron or something like that in terms of a package. that's a high price to pay
Samir, Toronto
Antropov at $3 million per year for 4 years sounds like im a pretty good deal for the leafs. Why not try to sign him longterm??
Pierre LeBrun (2:44 PM)
Because Burke thinks he's worth no more than $2 million a year
Clay, CA
Los Angeles Kings, buyers or sellers?
Pierre LeBrun (2:45 PM)
Well I think they're willing to make a good hockey trade for a player that will hlep not just this year but in years to come...
Brad (Medicine Hat, AB)
Do you think the Oilers would trade Erik Cole for Jay Bouwmeester?
Pierre LeBrun (2:45 PM)
No doubt. But Jacques Martin would immediately get fired !
Gerry (San Francisco, CA)
Hey guys, I know this is a long shot, but do you see Doug Wilson trading Christian Ehrhoff? He is proven to be a good offensive defenseman; however, there are times when he has defensive lapses (i.e. the weak coverage on the Zetterberg shorthanded goal from last week).
Pierre LeBrun (2:46 PM)
Ive never heard his name mentioned by other NHL executives Gerry so I doubt he's available
John Q Taxpayer (NJ)
How does Sather still have his job? He let the talent leave and now he is banking on Avery. If you were GM of the NYR, what would you try to accomplish at trade deadline?
Pierre LeBrun (2:47 PM)
I have no clue how Sather still has a job. OVERRATED.
Andrew (State College, PA)
It has become evident to me that the Flyers are a very good team but are another shutdown defenseman or capable starting goalie away from actually making a run at the Cup... Please tell me help is on the way!
Pierre LeBrun (2:48 PM)
Very observant Andrew. The Flyers are burning up the phone lines as we speak, Bouwmeester, Morris, etc... We'll see who they land
Joel (Montreal QC)
Hi Pierre of all 6 Canada's Teams who will be the most influential in getting the player they want going into the post-season
Pierre LeBrun (2:49 PM)
Keep an eye on Vancouver. Canucks GM Mike Gillis has good cap room and he's not scared to make a big move. I think he's eyed Bouwmeester for a few weeks but also has other items on the burner
Rick, Cape Coral, FL
Being here in SW FL the Panthers and the Lightning are always on TV. I realize both teams are in the SE division but why not do a straight up trade deal Bouwmeester (assuming they can sign him to an extension) for Lacavalier?
Pierre LeBrun (2:50 PM)
Ah.... No. Bouwmeester UFA and Lecavalier with 50-year deal.... not a good match...
Stephen (Blaine, WA)
Any chance the Canucks would trade Luongo if they do not make the playoffs? How about Luongo for Lacavalier since Luongo lives in S FL in the offseason and Tampa would love to dump Lacavalier's contract?
Pierre LeBrun (2:50 PM)
Ah... No
Steiny (NYC)
Tomorrow is my birthday so I am very excited for both my birthday and the deadline. Is Leclaire going to be traded before my birthday?
Pierre LeBrun (2:51 PM)
Happy Birthday Steiny ! Ottawa and Columbus we are told are talking about a potential Leclaire deal... so we'll see if they can pull it off. Columbus needs offense !!! Vermette would be the other guy potentially going the other way
JC(NJ)
Can the devils get Chris Pronger? Are they a cup contender with him? Without?
Pierre LeBrun (2:54 PM)
Not sure they're in the mix for Pronger anymore after acquiring Havelid yesterday
Dan (Jersey)
Any thought on the Havelid deal?
Pierre LeBrun (2:54 PM)
Really nice pickup. Underrated player. Really sneaky pickup by Lou. As a Devils fan you should be really happy. Good two-way player with good hockey smarts
Al Secord, Chicago Stadium
Do you think the Hawks will re-sign Havlat and/or trade Khabibulin
Pierre LeBrun (2:55 PM)
I'm told the Hawks and Havlat are close to agreeing to a multi-year extension..
Sean(McKeesport, Pa)
Any chance staal gets traded from pens for gaborik or kovalchuk?
Pierre LeBrun (2:56 PM)
Atlanta won't trade Kovalchuk before this deadline. Maybe they'll move in the summer.
John Malloy (Manjunk, PA)
I was never really into hockey until this past year when I saw it live. I wanted to play as a child but my mother would not let me and instead guided me to theater, Rent being my favorite show. PLEASE POST THIS (MINUS THIS PART) SO I WIN MY $5. NO NEED TO RESPOND!!! PLEASEEEE.. THANKS!!
Pierre LeBrun (2:56 PM)
There you go
Kevin (Mpls, MN)
Gaborik...does he go by the trade deadline?
Pierre LeBrun (2:57 PM)
tough call Kevin... I don't think Minnesota can get much for him at this point... since no one really knows when he'll be back...
JALLEN (HB, CALI)
Is Lombardi going to make a move to bring in a Forward who can put the puck in the net to help push the Kings into a playoff spot this year or do you think we are still building on our youth movement? would you name some names for people they would be looking at to help out?
Pierre LeBrun (2:58 PM)
I think he's trying hard to get a forward before tomorrow Jallen but he won't do something that hurts the future too much. Has to be the right fit.
Sean (Buffalo)
any news on contract talks between the sabres and connolly?
Pierre LeBrun (2:59 PM)
As of noon ET today, both sides were not close at all according to a source. But both sides were going to continue to talk today and tomorrow....
Corey (BurgerKing)
i love you
Pierre LeBrun (2:59 PM)
Thanks man, that feels good. On that note, I'm back to my blackberry puck heads ! EJ Hradek is next on this chat, followed by Scott Burnside at 4 p.m.
John (Rockville, MD)
Any chance the Caps land a defenseman or an upgrade in net to solidify their defense for a serious cup run?
EJ Hradek (3:05 PM)
Those are the areas that I would be looking to improve. Whether or not they can do that or whether they're looking in those areas is the question. If I was the Capitals, I would be looking to add some depth on defense and maybe an experienced goaltender to help share the load with Jose Theodore, especially considering the injury to Johnson.
Mike (Denver)
What should the Wild do about Marion Gaborik?
EJ Hradek (3:06 PM)
Well, he had surgery. He spoke publically that he feels good about his rehab process. He spent a lot of time in Vail, Colorado rehabbing. He feels he's close to playing in the next couple of weeks. I get the sense that Minnesota is going to have him rejoin the team when he's healthy and continue efforts to re-sign him. I do get the feeling however, that Gaborik would like to test free agency.
EJ Hradek (3:06 PM)
It's definitely an ongoing tricky situation for Wild management.
Doug (San Jose, CA)
What can I do to make sure I don't have to throw a 45 year old on my fourth line come playoff time?
EJ Hradek (3:08 PM)
I think that the Sharks have a couple of guys out injured. Once they get those guys back, with a full complement of forwards, they will be able to sort out the bottom end of their forward group. I think the return of Mitchell is something they're looking forward to. I think over the next 24 hours, the Sharks will look for any opportunities to add depth to their group. That said, they really like their team and are comfortable going forward as is.
Branden (Dayton, OH
Do you think the Wings are strong enough at the goalie position? I'm personally a little hesitant.
EJ Hradek (3:10 PM)
Osgood's struggles are a worry. But, he has had a record of success. He was terrific coming off the bench last year in the playoffs. And they've gotten a lot out of Ty Conklin as well. I'm sure they'd love to have Marty Brodeur or Roberto Luongo. But they've won the Cup with Osgood twice. With the salary cap situation, they're going to have to be willing to go forward with the guys they have.
Ray Shero (Pittsburgh)
If my team does make the playoffs, how far can they go with the current roster?
EJ Hradek (3:12 PM)
Oh, Ray...I expect the Penguins' esteemed GM probably has one or two moves left in him before the deadline tomorrow. I think the Penguins have played better since the return of Gonchar. It's just so hard to replace a No. 1 defenseman. They have to be excited to have him back in the lineup. If the Penguins get in, and I think they will, I have to think they have a chance to be a dangerous team.
Darcy (Buffalo)
Who on the Sabres do you think is on the market?
EJ Hradek (3:14 PM)
I think the most interesting guy is Tim Connolly. His contract is up at the end of the season. He's a talented, but oft-injured player. With his health history, it makes it tough to figure out what the right numbers are for him financially. I know there are a couple of teams interested in him. I know a couple of teams would be interested in him if they can't re-sign him by tomorrow.
Kyler
EJ--Does Gillis have anything up his sleeve for the Canucks? Many people are calling them a potential dark horse in the playoffs--agree/disagree?
EJ Hradek (3:15 PM)
I think they could be a dark horse. Let's face it, Detroit and San Jose are the two best in the conference and maybe in the league. It will be tough to get through the West, because of the presence of those two teams. But the Canucks have a world class goaltender, a good group of defensemen and they have more balance in their attack. I think Gillis is definitely making phone calls and thinking about different scenarios to improve his team.
EJ Hradek (3:16 PM)
I would like the Canucks in that second tier of teams in the West, behind the Sharks and Wings. I think they fit in with the Flames and the Blackhawks.
Eric (Missoula MT)
i was reading a cloum in the Chicago Tribune and it said the Blackkhawks are in the running to trade for Chris Pronger. is there any truth to this? i think they need a center more then another defensemen
EJ Hradek (3:17 PM)
Hey, I think every team would love to have Chris Pronger. I don't think financially it works for Chicago. Nor do I think they have the significant number of assets they are willing to trade to make it happen. I agree with you, their need is definitely up the middle at center. I think that's where they will be focusing their attention in the next 24 hours.
Burke:(Vassalboro, ME)
EJ-What moves do you see the Bruins making to help solidify their chances at going deep into the playoffs?
EJ Hradek (3:19 PM)
I think a team like the Bruins really should be thinking about adding veteran players that they feel fit the type of team they have. They had a terrific season and a team with terrific chemistry. I think they have to weigh that against any moves they might make. Like most clubs, they could certainly use another defenseman.
Geoff, Peace River, Alberta
What are the Oilers going to do at the deadline? Anything? Are they going to move Eric Cole with Moreau being out for who knows how long.
EJ Hradek (3:21 PM)
I think they'll be active at the deadline. I think there's a good chance they'll move Cole, who's an unrestricted free agent in the summer. There are several teams in the East, including his former team in Carolina who would be interested in him. I think they're a little disappointed they didn't improve this year. That usually means they might be looking to move one of their guys out.
Matt (Vancouver)
What are the chances the Canucks can get in on the Bouwmeester sweepstakes? Would an offer of Bieska, Raymond and a first be close to what the Panthers might want?
EJ Hradek (3:23 PM)
That probably isn't enough. But I think the Canucks have an interest in Bouwmeester. I think the teams in Western Canada where it appears Bouwmeester might have an interest in signing as an unrestricted free agent in the summer, would all have some level of interest. Of course, that all depends on their salary cap situations. Right now, I get the feeling Bouwmeester will stay in Florida.
Tom(New York)
Sean Avery??? is this really the best Sather can come up with??
EJ Hradek (3:24 PM)
It is for now. I think the Rangers are finally looking to make some moves. They put another couple of guys on waivers today. But I think they need to do something to improve the team. I think they'd like to be active, but they will certainly have limitations because of the contract of some of their key players.
Owen the ocelot
If the Panthers have to decide between 80 cents on the dollar for JBo or just keeping him, which do they/should they do?
EJ Hradek (3:27 PM)
That's a really tough question, because under most circumstances, I feel you have to protect the asset by moving it so that you're not left without anything in return. In this case, you're dealing with a franchise that's struggling to regain a foothold in that market and hasn't been to the playoffs since 2000. I think the circumstances are different and I would certainly understand it if they decide to hold on to him, rather then give him away for what they think is less then he's worth. I think it's a very tough call and I think their GM should try to think about all different scenarios, including a possibility of a three-way trade that could bring a helpful defenseman plus a significant prospect or pick in return.
EJ Hradek (3:27 PM)
It's definitely a tough spot, though.
Logan (Corpus Christi, TX)
Do you think the Stars would consider moving Turco? Maybe for another 'power forward' in a package deal?
EJ Hradek (3:29 PM)
Corpus Christi, TX, the birthplace of Brian Leech....No, the Stars have no one else ready to take that role in goal at this time. Right now the team has been hit with significant injuries, and are struggling, but trading away their No. 1 goalie with no one ready to take that spot would be foolish.
Mike (Columbus)
Hey EJ, Bryan Murray has stated that he's not going to move Jason Spezza. Do you think he truly stays in Ottawa or do you see him getting moved?
EJ Hradek (3:31 PM)
I think Jason Spezza has a pretty significant contract. I think that is a factor when you talk about moving him. You have to have a team that's interested in the player and would have to have the necessary cap room to make the deal. I think if there were such a situation, I think Bryan Murray would be foolish to not at least investigate it and decide if a move would help his team.
Brad (STL Bleeding Blue)
I'm really wondering if the stl defense is in as much of a need as has been sold to us, considering we've only given up 4 goals in 5 games (mason stands on his head, but D is a part of that), but have the worst goal support. seems to me we're lacking on the other side of the puck....thoughts?
EJ Hradek (3:34 PM)
I think that the St. Louis Blues have been getting tremendous goaltending from Chris Mason and he's been a big part of their recent run. I think that the Blues are, at heart, a very young team. They're still a team that's pushing toward the future. I think they would love to fight their way into the playoffs this year as they wait for some of their young players to experience what that would be like. I don't feel at this point that they make any significant moves to add to their group. I know they've been mentioned in the Chris Pronger rumors, but as I mentioned early, who wouldn't want to add Chris Pronger? But that would be a pretty big ticket acquisition. Pronger would have to be signed longterm soon thereafter at a pretty high number.
Joe (Frostburg, MD)
What are the chances the caps move Nylander for a puck moving d man?
EJ Hradek (3:36 PM)
I think the Caps would like to move Nylander. They've been interested in moving him for some time now. But the issue is simple, he's got a large contract, both in dollars and terms. That makes it difficult to make a workable deal in a salary cap league. If they can find something that makes sense with a potential trade partner and the price is right, I think they would be happy to make that move. Unfortunately, as they know, it's not that simple.
JUstin (Tampa)
What do you think TampaBay should do to insure they make the playoffs next year?
EJ Hradek (3:38 PM)
I think they have to manage their assets wisely. They have some really high end players there. I think it's pretty clear they need to restructure their defense. I think they need to take whatever veteran assets they have and see if they can trade those players into picks or prospects before the deadline. They clearly have forwards to build around. At some point, they'll have to consider more and more of those player to balance out the strength on the blue line. They also need health at goalie.
Tutt (Parry Sound, ON)
What are the Flyers going to do? They could do some damage with some of the guys they have up front. Are they looking for a goalie?
EJ Hradek (3:40 PM)
Like a lot of teams, the Flyers have salary cap limitations. They are pushed right against it. I think they would like to add depth, maybe a player on defense. I think they would be interested to talk about whatever goaltenders are available. But the bottom line is simple. For every guy they add, they have to subtract someone the other way. If they can't do that, they can't do the deal.
Bill ((Pasadena, Ca.))
EJ, dude, what do you forecast in your crystal ball the kings doing at the deadline?
EJ Hradek (3:41 PM)
That's a good question. For me, if I were the Kings, I would be listening for offers that would push me forward. I think they're in a good spot. They're ahead of schedule with their rebuilding. They've stockpiled a lot of good young players in their system. They have plenty of salary cap flexibility right now. I think they're open to go in a number of directions. That's a nice situation to be in. I'm sure some of their peers would love to have some extra room to operate.
Anthony (nyc)
Are the Devils done? How do u like the Havelid trade?
EJ Hradek (3:43 PM)
I think the Havelid trade is a nice addition for them. They didn't give up much to do it and they're not on the hook longterm financially. I think the Devils are positioned from a salary cap standpoint that they can do 1 or 2 more things, depending on the money involved. They've got a pretty good group together right now and I think they have to be pretty happy with where they stand, considering they've been without Brodeur for months.
Chris (The igloo)
Who is best scoring winger available and do you think the pens have a shot to grab him?
EJ Hradek (3:44 PM)
Well, from what I hear, Martin St. Louis might be available. He's pretty darn good. Whether the Penguins have the assets to make that happen, I don't know. But I think he would be a great fit there, as well as several other places around the league. He's a terrific competitor and a talented player.
Tim (Boston)
EJ, have you heard anything about Calgary looking to make any big moves tomorrow. Seems like they would have to in order to get past the Wings and Sharks in the West.
EJ Hradek (3:46 PM)
Yeah, I would think that's probably true. I hear they have an interest, like several teams, in Ollie Jokinen. But again, not to sound like a broken record, but there are salary cap implications there as well. It looks pretty sure that Jokinen will move before the deadline.
EJ Hradek (3:46 PM)
One thing to remember, Jokinen did have a postitive relationship with Mike Keenan during their time together in Florida.
Doug (NY)
Please tell me the Isles will be dealing their veterans? Who's most likely to go?
EJ Hradek (3:48 PM)
Well Bill Guerin has been rumored to be traded for the last several days. And I'm starting to worry about his health. Although he's currently hurt, Doug Wade as well. The Islanders are clearly trying to move their veterans to gain more attractive prospects, which is wise on their part.
Eric (Chicago IL)
The blackhawks have huet and many other great young goalies. Will they trade nik?
EJ Hradek (3:49 PM)
Huet is not that young, he's in his 30s, which is old by NHL standards. Khabibulin is currently out. His injury could be worse then the club is admitting. I think the Hawks are going to go forward with those on their roster. I think they probably feel more comfortable if he's there to work with Huet.
Cory (Toronto)
I'm getting the feeling that Leaf fans are going to be very disappointed with Burke's moves (or lack thereof) I think by holding out for unrealistic returns on Antropov, Kaberle, Kubina etc. We aren't going to get anything at all for them. Thoughts?
EJ Hradek (3:52 PM)
Aren't Leafs fans always disappointed? Isn't that their nature? I think Brian is going to do what's best for his team and get the most for his players as he tries to rebuild his team. I don't know what kind of haul Burke is going to be able to get tomorrow, but it certainly won't be for a lack of trying. I don't think he helped his case, however, in getting top value for Antropov by badmouthing him a couple of weeks ago.
Brian (Philly)
What do you think of the rumor going around that Biron will be sent to Phoenix for cap room? Is it a good idea to go ahead with Niitty, and if they get the deal done can they assure themselves j-Bo?
EJ Hradek (3:54 PM)
I think by moving a player in that scenario, they would likely have to give up some other asset, either a top prospect or high draft pick. If they can do a deal that betters their team in the long run and gives them a better chance at winning, then I'm sure they'll do it. But don't think they can just send someone to Phoenix without paying some other premium for the ability to create the cap room to do something else.
Roger (Dallas)
With under 24 hours to go...when do you expect the first block to drop? later tonight? early tomorrow?
EJ Hradek (3:56 PM)
Roger, I really wish I could answer that question. My life would be so much easier. I think deals could happen at any time between now and 3 p.m. ET tomorrow. I think it's been well documented that the Hossa trade from Atlanta to Pittsburgh wasn't finalized until literally a few minutes before the deadline. I'm sorry buddy, I really wish I had a better answer.
EJ Hradek (3:59 PM)
Thank everyone for some great questions. I hope your favorite teams get exactly what you were hoping to get by 3 p.m. tomorrow. Arrivederci!
Amy (franklinville, NY)
So rumor has it Tiny Tim Connolly is going to be off to Columbus for Rostislav Klesla. Is this a good deadline day deal? Or is this another one of the Sabres, rent-a-player that doesnt help us out guys?
Scott Burnside (4:06 PM)
Hey Amy, not sure about Connolly but the Blue Jackets are definitely looking for help up front. They have been hit hard by injury and need someone (or someones) that can help out on the penalty kill and the power play. Connolly would certainly fit the bill on the power play end of things and we're told his contract talks with the Sabres aren't progressing all that smoothly. You could do worse if you're a Blue Jackets fan looking for the first playoff experience.
Andrew (Phx, AZ)
Alright, Lebrun and EJ didn't help me out so your my last hope. All I hear about the Coyotes is who is interested in Morris and Jokinen without any mention of who they may get for them. Do you have any news on who they are looking to get in return?
Scott Burnside (4:08 PM)
My esteemed colleagues are in the same boat I am and that means I won't be able to give you specific names but you can be sure they won't be big names with big contracts attached to them. Look for Don Maloney to bring in draft picks and prospects that could move into the line-up in the next year or two. Sorry.
Josh (Da Burgh)
Are the Pens looking to land a big name before the deadline? If so, who do you see them pursuing?
Scott Burnside (4:10 PM)
Josh, you've probably read or heard that the Penguins put Miroslav Satan on waivers today. If no team claims him (a likelihood) it'll be interesting to see if they send him to the AHL so GM Ray Shero can make another move. We're guessing he's looking for a blend of skill and toughness, the kind of package Pens fans remember in Ryan Malone. Stay tuned as Mr. Shero doesn't look like he's quite done after firing head coach Michel Therrien and acquiring Chris Kunitz from Anaheim.
Matt (Denver)
Scott, it seems like every year a GM (or two) makes an ill advised move at the dealine and hurts their team in the long run. Which team is most likely to mortgage their future on a cup run this spring?
Scott Burnside (4:12 PM)
Matt, it's a great point you make. GMs face different pressures depending on their market and the make-up of their team. I think the greatest pressure may be on Scott Howson in Columbus where the Blue Jackets have never made the playoffs and the fan base, which has been remarkably patient and loyal, is growing dissatisfied. Howson will add a forward but just how big and how much he pays in terms of futures will be interesting to watch. A team like Boston, which has been linked to Derek Morris and Chris Pronger, is another interesting case as GM Peter Chiarelli has a team capable of going the distance but to add a big piece before the deadline may cost him too much.
ryan (STL)
Hey i was wondering what the chances are of the blues continuing their run and landing a spot in the playoffs? Also, do you think they will pick anyone up, or just sell of keith t. like usual
Scott Burnside (4:15 PM)
Ryan, the Blues are one of the great stories of the second half as they've charged back into the fray. There are rumors that the Blues might take a run at Chris Pronger but that could happen before the draft as opposed to before 3 p.m. Wednesday. I think tonight may be the tipping point. If they win then maybe Tkachuk stays. If they lose, well, it'll be hard to pass up a chance to land a couple of draft picks.
Joe: (St. Paul, MN)
Scott, do you see the Wild making any moves at the deadline? If so who are they interested in? Also, what players will they look to move?
Scott Burnside (4:17 PM)
Joe, as you probably know GM Doug Risebrough signed Niklas Backstrom to a four-year contract extension today and that's good news for a team that has had trouble getting its free agents under contract. Marian Gaborik is as good as gone but he won't likely be moved before the deadline given the fact he's still hurt. If he can get back in action before the end of the month, though, he may be like a deadline acquisition. Wild fans just hope it's not too late. Other than that, Risebrough might take a run at Jokinen who has one more year left on his contract at $5.5 million.
Kent (Chicago)
What are my Hawks going to do to make this lineup complete? Call Peter Forsberg for a run?
Scott Burnside (4:18 PM)
Kent, if you're a 'Hawks fan I'm guessing you'll be hoping they land a player with two good feet (with all due respect to the gimpy Forsberg). No secret that GM Dale Tallon is looking to add some depth down the middle. Nik Antropov (a little too brittle for my liking) might be in the mix or maybe a better fit would be Dominick Moore or Jeff Halpern.
Mike SIC NJ
Scott,Im sure your tired of hearing this but are the Flyers truly in your opinion gonna land Jay Bo?
Scott Burnside (4:19 PM)
Mike. No. I think the Flyers' cap issues will make landing Bouwmeester too complicated and would be too disruptive to a Flyers team that many people underestimate.
Scott (California)
Do the Sharks need to make any trades or not?
Scott Burnside (4:23 PM)
Scott. Great name. You must be very proud. We answered an earlier question about GMs spending a lot in terms of futures and not getting much in return. Doug Wilson the Sharks' GM has landed some big fish the last few years; Bill Guerin, Brian Campbell, Craig Rivet among them; and they still haven't been able to escape the second round of the playoffs. With their stellar line-up this season I would expect Wilson to do little beyond tinkering with this line-up perhaps adding a depth defenseman.
steve Boston ma
What do you think Montreal needs ??
Scott Burnside (4:27 PM)
Steve well GM Bob Gainey has solved one of his problems by landing GM Mathieu Schneider who has helped the slumping power play. And with Alex Kovalev back in form (at least for now) it's unlikely he'll be moved. So, to your question, if Gainey could find a center to replace the production that was lost with Robert Lang's injury that would be good for the Habs. Can you say Olli Jokinen? And I think there remains the goaltending issue. Will Gainey roll the dice with Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price again or does he try and bring in some experience?
Scott Niedermayer(Anaheim)
Scott, any chance my old buddy Lou brings me back?
Scott Burnside (4:29 PM)
Scott. Nice to hear from you. I think you can rest assured you'll finish out the season in Anaheim. If someone is going to move I suspect it'll be your partner Chris Pronger. Now, tell us whether you're going to retire or not? If you do retire maybe Pronger stays. But if you don't retire you can kiss Pronger goodbye, likely before the draft. I'm guessing you'll be back, though. Olympics. Vancouver. Pretty enticing isn't it Scott?
Ryan Miller's Ankle (Rehab)
Do I change what the Sabres may do as the deadline approaches? Are we now a buyer on defense or seller or spare offensive parts?
Scott Burnside (4:34 PM)
Ryan, how is your ankle by the way? Well, you certainly have made life interesting for GM Darcy Regier. He would like to add a defenseman and now he may need to add some goaltending depth. Don't buy the rumors of your old pal Martin Biron returning to Buffalo but if you aren't coming back any time soon then that's a lot of pressure on Patrick Lalime. Then there's Tim Connolly who is talented but injury-prone and may be on the move by 3 p.m. tomorrow. So, put your feet, er, ankle, up and watch the drama unfold.
NIcklas Lidstrom(Detroit)
Any chance I will get somebody to protect me like a Ian Lapierrere
Scott Burnside (4:36 PM)
Nick, how are things? Still smarting from that 8-0 pasting at the hands of the Preds the other night? I think GM Ken Holland might add a player like an Ian Laperriere out of Colorado or Chris Neil out of Ottawa but Holland won't be spending a lot and if the asking price is too high look for him to look to the Wings' farm system to fill any holes that appear in the lineup.
Vinny L (Tampa, FL)
Scotty-boy, wouldn't I look good in a spoked "B"?
Scott Burnside (4:37 PM)
Oh Vinny, you don't want to start those rumors again. You know full well you're staying put in Tampa.
Pat (Vancouver)
Have you heard, or do you think the Sedins will be signed before the deadline? Any chance they could be traded?
Scott Burnside (4:38 PM)
Is that you Pat Quinn? No, don't think the Sedins will be signed before the deadline but they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
Sean (Denver, CO)
Guys, Other than the very occasional phone call to Lake Erie, the avs have sat on their hands all year, despite having holes, do you think tomorrow will be different?
Scott Burnside (4:41 PM)
Tomorrow promises to be an interesting day for the Avs who right now may be the worst team in the NHL. No doubt GM Francois Giguere will be looking at the possibility of moving the aforementioned Ian Laperriere, Jordan Leopold and there is some interest in Ryan Smyth.
Scott Burnsides Deep Dark Secrets(Connecticut)
man, i can't wait for the Sean Avery signing to blow up in the Rangers face. right?
Scott Burnside (4:43 PM)
Well, we all have our secrets don't we? As for the Rangers and Avery it's going to be interesting to see if the 'new' Avery can still play with the same edge that made him so successful in his first go-round in New York. And if he doesn't how long before John Tortorella blows a gasket. Whatever, this is a team in desperate need of some emotion. They've got it with Tortorella and now they've got a double-dose with Avery. Hang on to your seats.
Mike (Dallas)
Do you see the Stars making any significant moves?
Scott Burnside (4:46 PM)
Mike, well, if you count getting out from under the Sean Avery contract (or at least half of it with his reclamation by the Rangers today) that might well be their big move of the deadline. Other than that don't imagine Les Jackson and Brett Hull will be too active in spite of their injuries.
Mike ( Philadelphia)
What's the chances the flyers do something at the deadline? Cap trouble is hurting them.
Scott Burnside (4:49 PM)
I think GM Paul Holmgren will be looking at a variety of things including Bouwmeester and maybe even his goaltending situation but in the end i will be surprised if the team does anything dramatic.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
I think the Devs have to be the front-runner to win the Cup...That being sad, the Caps can't really go for a run with Jose in net, can they?
Scott Burnside (4:52 PM)
Mike, I'm not sure if the Devils are front-runners but with Martin Brodeur standing on his head and with a nice pick-up in the form of Niclas Havelid yesterday from Atlanta they are a team to be reckoned with. As for the Caps I think the goaltending is going to be the big question mark for them heading into the post-season and until Jose Theodore proves doubters wrong, ie. by winning a couple of rounds, then those questions will persist. The question will be whether George McPhee goes for some goaltending depth before the deadline.
Ryan (Hotlanta)
What's the latest word on Lehtonen being moved?
Scott Burnside (4:53 PM)
Ryan, how's the weather at home? Don't look for Lehtonen to be on the move even though he is going to be a restricted free agent this summer.
Mike (Boston)
Scott, if you had to predict one big trade before tomorrow, what would it be?
Scott Burnside (4:54 PM)
I'm looking for Olli Jokinen to be the biggest name on the move tomorrow. I think Bouwmeester, Pronger and the rest of the big names rumored to be on the move will stay put.
Alex (Detroit)
What do you think the chances are of the red wings dealing either franzen or hossa before the deadline? Or maybe even Hudler and Sammuelsson?
Scott Burnside (4:56 PM)
Alex I think the chances are slim and none. Figure GM Ken Holland to be very conservative this deadline and he won't be moving big parts of his machine like Franzen or Hossa or even Hudler or Samuelsson.
Schanz (CT)
any chance of the devs getting Neidermayer back?
Scott Burnside (4:57 PM)
Don't think so.
James, Ca
Scott with the Ducks waving Morrison today, is it to make room for a trade or just to let teams know he is available?
Scott Burnside (4:59 PM)
I think this is about GM Bob Murray trying to trim payroll with an eye to next year. If no one claims him he'll be gone as an unrestricted free agent this summer but I think it's more financial than about clearing space for another move.
Steve, Pittsburgh PA
Any chance the Pens get Gary Roberts back?
Scott Burnside (5:01 PM)
Don't think so. The grizzled old vet was put on waivers today and there were rumors Calgary was interested but had cap issues because of Roberts's contract.
Scott Burnside (5:01 PM)
Thanks folks. Catch you on the flip side.
