Hello friends. As is the case on ESPN Radio this week, it will be Ryen Russillo filling in for SVP in chat land today. Stop by at 12.30p EST to talk with him and then continue to chat during the first hour of Tirico & Van Pelt!
ESPNRadio.com (12:30 PM)
Hey everyone...Scott is on vacation. Ryen Russillo is hosting on ESPN Radio and is here to chat with you all!
Ryen Russillo (12:31 PM)
Let's talk some sports gang!!! Go ahead and ask T.O. questions, but feel free to entertain me with other stuff too!
Jonathan Fort Worth,Texas
Why release a game changing receiver and take a cap hit, if you have no plans of bringing another one to replace him. Roy Williams are two different types of receivers. And the backups aren't really proving. And Crayton did a disappearing act last season. Why not bring in a Anquin Boldin or a Chad Johnson?
Ryen Russillo (12:32 PM)
They have a lot of time to figure out how to replace him, but this move is all about him the distraction. It has nothing to do with the cap hit. This one explains itself.
Elliot Ortiz (Trenton, NJ)
T.O. wants to be a big star. It doesnt get any bigger than Big Blue and New York. Giants need a big time receiver and T.O. needs a team. sounds good to me what do you think?
Ryen Russillo (12:32 PM)
Bad idea. Tom Coughlin will hate him. NYC could provide a big distraction...and they want to bring Plex back anyway.
Ryen Russillo (12:33 PM)
The other factor is...if he's still worried about how much he's going to make, he's not going to like the original offers...so what team is going to give him the money he REALLY wants? That's what will likely decide it.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Ryen may be running the chat but SVP's face is still on the screen.
Ryen Russillo (12:33 PM)
Thats an homage to SVP. We miss him.
steven (amarillo tx)
will T. Holt be a good fit in Dallas?
Ryen Russillo (12:34 PM)
There's been a significant dropoff numbers-wise, but he's a quality guy and maybe the numbers are a product of St. Louis falling apart as an offense.
Mark - West New York - New Jersey
Steven A. Smith makes it sound like this is a big surprise. We heard about Terrell Owens being released months ago. He does not need an explanation. He is not worth his talent. He is a cancer on any team. He is selfish and would tear apart any locker room. This is addition by subtraction and better than if the Cowboys had four #1 draft picks. Thanks, Mark
Ryen Russillo (12:35 PM)
Actually I'll be talking to Stephen A Smith on the show at 1:12 PM ET. I'll ask him why he was surprised by it. It's a must listen!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Ryen: Are you a fan of the WBC or are you like me who thinks MLB stars shouldn't be participating in it?
Ryen Russillo (12:37 PM)
I just don't understand why people hate it so much. It's only the second time around, if they keep doing it, I think tradition will build. Timing isn't great, but what's a better solution? Playing in the middle of the year and taking time off? Shortening the season every four years and playing 152 games? Playing it after the World Series? I don't see one that's logical.
Matt (Atlantic City, NJ)
Do you think the Eagles can or will get Marvin Harrison?
Ryen Russillo (12:38 PM)
I think they can. But, they just don't seem to want to spend money on WR's for years. Everyone always says they need WR's and the only time they've spent money was on TO. And Harrison, physically wasn't the same guy last year. So if he's a bargain, maybe...if' he's looking to get paid...probably not.
AMR (Cleveland)
On selection Sunday, who are your faves to get in and who should be left out?
Ryen Russillo (12:39 PM)
Liberty and Shock are locks. Comets on the bubble. Lynx have no chance.
Chris (LL, Michigan)
Ryen, do you see your local team (Patriots) going after Torry Holt after he is released?
Ryen Russillo (12:40 PM)
I would say no because they just don't really need WR's. Moss and Welker are pretty good so they're not going to spend a ton of money on a third guy. They need LB's and CB's.
Elliott (Cincinnati)
Hi Ryan! Houshmanwhatever or Coles? Fair trade off for my Bengals?
Ryen Russillo (12:41 PM)
Cinci will miss Housh. He was always on the same page as Carson Palmer. I also think he was very valuable in containing the Chad Johnson mess. So no, not a good tradeoff.
eli warrenton NC
any chance steve nash wins a nba championship
Ryen Russillo (12:41 PM)
Not unless he hooks on with another team, because it's not happening with Phoenix.
Dale Fort Myers, Fl
Why Wouldn't T.O. look good in a Buc's Jersey? He would go great with that new Atitude they got going over there.
Ryen Russillo (12:42 PM)
Except for having now QB. Other than that, it should be great!
Elliott (Cincinnati)
Did you pull any stomach muscles laughing at Cowherd at the combine?
Ryen Russillo (12:43 PM)
I'm in the best shape of any radio host here at ESPN. Or maybe even nationally. So that's a no.
AMR (Cleveland)
Are the Cavs, I mean, Lebron, going all the way this year or will thay run out of gas?
Ryen Russillo (12:44 PM)
If KG is back I say no. If no KG, then it's a coin toss between them and LA. If i had to pick between thos e two I'd pick LA.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Greenberg is taking boxing lessons though. Maybe he'll spar with you.
Ryen Russillo (12:45 PM)
I'm probably more in Golic weight-class.
Elliott (Cincinnati)
i wouldn't call Golic's weight class "in shape" Ryen!
Ryen Russillo (12:46 PM)
It was kind of a joke guys...but I am jacked.
Todd (Columbus)
Who are you?
Ryen Russillo (12:47 PM)
Where have you been? I've been hosting weekends for three years!!! Weekends baby.
Elliott (Cincinnati)
He's the man! You need your own radio spot!
Ryen Russillo (12:48 PM)
I'm thinking about going overseas to play D-League Swiss hoops and then come back and have my own show as an NBA Insider.
Kreger (Boston)
Van Peezy, I need Fant Baseball Help. 12 team mixed leauge. I have chipper, zimmerman, alex gordon as 3rd Basemen. Would you trade Zimmerman for Glaus and Wieters? Shoppach is my catcher.. help me sexy!
Ryen Russillo (12:48 PM)
Trade all those guys for Alex Cora. Pay attention!!!!
Chris (LL, Michigan)
Ryen, should the Celtics have waited on signing bought out players. Would they be better if they would have picked up Drew Gooden instead of Mikki Moore?
Ryen Russillo (12:50 PM)
They'd be better if they got him. But they knew they could get Mikkie Moore, they didn't think they could get the other guys. And Cleveland had $5 million to give anyeone they wanted. Ainge thought they had to get someone they knew they could get...that's why he likes trades better than free agency.
Elliott (Cincinnati)
SO YOU CAN REALLY BALL!!! My money's on Jake Voskhul for 1 on 1!
Ryen Russillo (12:50 PM)
I'm glad you guys realized my segment on the 9 NBA players I could beat 1-on-1 was a joke. I had guys getting in touch with me after that trying to figure out if I was serious.
AMR (Cleveland)
Who's your sleeper pick, team or player, in the MLB?
Ryen Russillo (12:52 PM)
SF Giants because that rotation could be nasty. Sid Finch for player.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Why are you the only ESPN employee who talks about Lebron faking injuries like a soccer player? He's a great player, but that stuff is obnoxious.
Ryen Russillo (12:54 PM)
Why are you the only fan who agrees with me? Because it's 100% true and no one beleives me. I love the guy as a player but it's so annoying. By the way, did you ask David Thorpe this question in a chat yesterday? Someone asked him that.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Just about time for radio. SVP usually takes off by now for a Diet Coke and some Sweet Tarts. You may want to do the same.
Ryen Russillo (12:55 PM)
I'm here right until the end. I may keep chatting even 10 minutes into the show!
AMR (Cleveland)
Marc, have you actually watched Lebron? There's more drama on that court than on TNT.
Ryen Russillo (12:56 PM)
You've watched The Closer too much.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
So is basketball your sport of choice or are there others you enjoy discussing?
Ryen Russillo (12:57 PM)
I like em all. I've done NBA for TV for five years. I've hosted The Baseball Show and done Minor League Baseball pxp and hosted College GameDay on ESPN Radio. I've never understood why we have to "focus" on sport as hosts/analysts, because we don't as fans.
Elliott (Cincinnati)
Did you see the clip online of Lebron cutting cheese on the bench? Check it out! Looks like the Brazillian player almost faints. Very funny
Ryen Russillo (12:57 PM)
Haven't seen it...I'm on it though!
Ryen Russillo (12:57 PM)
If you guys want a great link, check out the College Humor basketball prank skit.
Adam (Ohio)
I agree that LeBron 'sells' drives to the hoop a lot when he doesn't need to, but 'faking injuries' would be the wrong way of putting it. (Unless you're agreeing with what I'm saying, lol, but I can't tell).
Ryen Russillo (12:58 PM)
All I know is that there's some invisible force field around Lebron's face where if you come within five inches of his face and you touch this force field, he will go down for five minutes--still top 3 favorite player in the NBA.
Adam (Ohio)
Shaq's jab, nay, gigantic punch, at Stan Van Gundy: Fair or foul?
Ryen Russillo (12:59 PM)
Foul. (Programming Note: tune into the show at 1:40 ET today for Ryen's opinion on this topic)
Ryen Russillo (1:00 PM)
I'm here past 1. Today's show will probably be one of the Top 7 in the history of ESPN Radio...you won't want to miss it.
ESPNRadio.com (1:01 PM)
Keep chatting over at ESPNRadio.com by clicking Tirico & Van Pelt! Thanks!
ESPNRadio.com (1:02 PM)
Hello all. Hope you accomplished momentous things during this last week (or two - depending upon who you are). How is everyone doing today?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Gotta head out to take care of some stuff. Sorry I'll miss the rest of today's chat. I'll catch you all back here next week though. I hope everyone has a safe and happy weekend. God Bless.
AMR (Cleveland)
Where are all of the other ladies today?
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Hey Frank...how is everyone doing today...sorry I am late...
ESPNRadio.com (1:05 PM)
Welcome. Welcome to all. How many of you would like Mr. Owens on your team?
Elliott (Cincinnati)
I'd love it! Ocho Cinco and Mr. Owens could bail each other out of jail. Have valet at the courthouse and everything
ESPNRadio.com (1:07 PM)
If I had to guess right now, I'd go with the Bengals as his most likely destination. Tennessee and New Orleans might make sense, too.
AMR (Cleveland)
NO T.O. in Cleveland. Are sports teams get enough bad pub!
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
I think Ray Lewis could keep him in line...not sure that I would put Flacco through the trouble though
Adam (Ohio)
Hey, we're the mistake by the lake no more! LeBron, Danny Ferry, and Mike Brown has makde sure of that...now to get the Browns and Indians on the same page
Elliott (Cincinnati)
We got Mr. Overrated (Lavereus Coles). 0-16 HERE WE COME... WHO DEY!
Markus (Salt Lake City)
As as longtime Cowboys fan, we are better off without him. I'm glad Roy is gone too. He got burned more than George Harrison in a tanning bed!
ESPNRadio.com (1:10 PM)
George Harrison was a member of The Beatles and wasn't very tan. I assume you mean George Hamilton.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Frank...is that you?
ESPNRadio.com (1:11 PM)
It is. Interviewing Adam McKay for tomorrow's NBA Today podcast in about an hour. Very exciting.
Adam (Ohio)
Stephen A! He's hilarious. I wish he would show up on First Take more often to tear up Skip haha.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
I must admit, Ryen is a cutie...
ESPNRadio.com (1:14 PM)
He's a real cool dude. Everyone should check out his work on the First Draft podcast with Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay.
AMR (Cleveland)
How about the Dolphins or the Colts for TO?
ESPNRadio.com (1:15 PM)
I can't see Miami because Parcells already tried that experiment in Dallas. I can't see Peyton Manning and T.O. getting along, but the Colts aren't as unlikely of an option as the Dolphins.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
What is the deal with the webcam today?
ESPNRadio.com (1:15 PM)
Is it not working? I'll check.
Donald Williamsville,Mo
Ok Shaq at 25 against Howard now,Who ya got?
ESPNRadio.com (1:16 PM)
I'd take Shaq at 25 if the question is premised on who you would take if you had to win one game.
D.B. (Stamford, CT)
How about T.O. joining Plaxico on the Giants? There'd be more drama on that team than on Broadway.
ESPNRadio.com (1:18 PM)
Word up to Stamford. If the team determines Plaxico Burress is going to jail and/or won't be back, then I think that scenario becomes more likely than it might seem.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Coughlin is a Parcells guy..
ESPNRadio.com (1:19 PM)
That would be one of the reasons why I don't see it happening. Another is the Giants got to see firsthand what happened with T.O. in Dallas.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
The webcam has been down all day
ESPNRadio.com (1:19 PM)
Well that certainly sounds like a problem. We're on it.
Richie (Dayton,OH)
cavs celtics game on friday, who are you taking??
ESPNRadio.com (1:19 PM)
Cleveland.
Adam (Ohio)
Shaq obviously. Howard is a beast, but Shaq was a force offensively and defensively, while Howard is only really effective on the defensive end. I love Dwight though, so don't take that as a shot, but hey, I'd take Shaq against almost any other big man.
AMR (Cleveland)
If there's no SVP, there's no need for the webcam :(
Adam (Ohio)
I agree with Stephen A, TO has done some dumb locker room things, but he is a great talent and it's the coach's job to keep him in check.
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
*gags* Shut Steven A. Up, he's just a complete TO homer.
Donald Williamsville,Mo
Do you see the Braves as a contender in the NL?
ESPNRadio.com (1:23 PM)
I can see them as a contender in the NL East, and obviously anything can happen once the calendar flips to October. The real question for me is the rotation. Can all of those guys stay healthy? If so, I think they'll be in the mix.
AMR (Cleveland)
The coaches in Dallas have no control over any player. Jerry Jones makes all of the decisions good and bad. Wade Phillips is just a puppet.
Bryan (Minnesota)
Please make Stephen A. stop...I got a headache listening to all that.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
I love Flacco's maturity...the Ravens finally have a QB
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
The only surprising thing about the cowboys releasing TO was that it took so long. They were probably trying to shop him out to someone, anyone, so they wouldn't take such a $$ hit.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
I agree Iowa...TO has been a problem everywhere he has played
Richie (Dayton,OH)
whats the deal with the web cam
ESPNRadio.com (1:24 PM)
The appropriate people have been made aware of the problem.
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Hey Lisa, how's the weather treating you?
Markus (Salt Lake City)
How do you owe child support as an NFL player? Chris Henry, what is the deal, man?
Elliott (Cincinnati)
Travis Henry! I just heard that... unreal
Elliott (Cincinnati)
in was travis henry, not chris
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
We had some snow on Monday...about 7 inches...the boys loved it...ready for Spring to come though
Adam (Ohio)
Come on, how is he a complete 'TO homer?'? He admitted TO has did some completely dumb and uncalled for things. But the fact is, the man can ball. You can never take that away from him. He's 35, and though he doesn't have it like he used to, he's still one of the most productive receivers in the league. He does drop the ball too much, but when he gets that ball in his hands, he can do some dangerous things with it against any D.
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Men screw around with their child support all the time. They should be rounded up and tossed in the lockup. Jumping ship on your kids is despicable
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Its almost 60 here today, I forgot yall on the east coast had a nasty blizzard. Spring is a comin'!
ESPNRadio.com (1:28 PM)
It is supposed to be a really nice weekend here in the northeast.
Adam (Ohio)
What is with Billy Mays constantly yelling in his advertisements?
ESPNRadio.com (1:28 PM)
He's too awesome to hear the volume of his own voice.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Travis Henry has a bunch of kids...I thought it was around 8 or 10...how did he not learn from his mistakes
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Have to run guys...see you next week...my boss is here this afternoon
Elliott (Cincinnati)
Who are you Frank?
ESPNRadio.com (1:31 PM)
Chat moderator, ESPNRadio.com person, NBA Today podcast contributor and model train enthusiast.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Frank is the best chat guy around...ESPN should give him a raise...
ESPNRadio.com (1:31 PM)
Much appreciated. I work hard in the chat for the money. Enjoy your weekend, Lisa.
ESPNRadio.com (1:32 PM)
Nice try, John Dennis. I used to live in Boston. I know who you are!
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Adam, that's exactly the sort of TO homer response I was talking about. TO doesn't produce on 3rd downs, his production has been going down significantly every year, and he's going to be 36 this season. Every single one of those is a red flag to anyone who pays attention. Add the fact that he destroys the team spirit of every team he's on... The cowboys were idiots for giving him a 4 year deal, because it made him feel safe to start mouthing off.
Adam (Ohio)
Oh speaking of owners putting gag orders on their team, what's everyone think of Cuban destroying the Mavs, saying if they don't give effort he'd replace each and every one of them, whatever their salary is. Haha, Cuban is great.
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Take it easy lisa.
ESPNRadio.com (1:32 PM)
How does everyone feel about A-Rod being out at least 10 weeks?
Jim (Indiana)
The Mav's answered the call
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Don't care.
Jim (Indiana)
Anything to get him outta of the spotlight.
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Adam, thought it was a great moment in coaching. Same as when the cards got to the end of the season and coaches let players know that it was time to put up or shut up.
Markus (Salt Lake City)
It will be good for him as far as the controversy is concerned. Out of sight, out of mind. Comes at a shaky time, though.
Adam (Ohio)
Yeah they got it done against the Spurs. That loss to the Thunder with Durant and Green both out was pretty bad.
Elliott (Cincinnati)
Cowherd made a good point... Bone cist... HGH???? Hmmmm
ESPNRadio.com (1:35 PM)
Too bad numerous doctors have come out and said that PEDs are unlikely to cause such an injury.
Adam (Ohio)
I think Rob Parker and Skip Bayless said it best this morning on 1st and 10, that A-Rod being hurt will only help the Yankees. Obviously you don't want anyone injured but the media circus should calm a bit.
ESPNRadio.com (1:37 PM)
This is from one of our internal news update e-mails: "Can the cyst that has been discovered in his right hip possibly be related to illegal steroid use? Not likely, said anti-doping expert Gary Wadler, an internist and member of the World Anti-Doping Agency. "Everybody's jumping to correlations or conclusions, but there's no basis for it," Wadler said yesterday from his Manhasset office."
Elliott (Cincinnati)
Take care Frank and everyone! Boss is comin!
ESPNRadio.com (1:38 PM)
Godspeed. 23 minutes to go.
Adam (Ohio)
Yeah Iowa, I agree, TO is definitely a hindrance in the locker room. I think, though, with good leadership on a contender, he MIGHT be able to be kept in check
ESPNRadio.com (1:40 PM)
The webcam is fixed for all of you who were asking about it. Sorry about that. Props to Blair for fixing it for us.
Adam (Ohio)
Oh and yeah, Cuban saying that is very reminiscint of the Cards end of the season. Cuban has consistently been a great owner, built that team into a contender each and every year (save for the last couple of years), and despite any problems with the refs and the league, I think he's great.
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Parcells is the only one who has - notice he didn't give him any 4 year deals iirc. I think only 2 teams could get production out of TO right now, Pittsburgh and Miami - because I can't see TO pushing Parcells, and Pittsburgh's coach scares me. Neither would give him over a 2 year deal though imho.
AMR (Cleveland)
I've got to head out and do some actual work today. See you all next week. Have a safe weekend everybody!
Markus (Salt Lake City)
No leader could corrall TO. If the great Jerry Rice could not show him how to be a teammate, how can a coach. many players respond more to the people they play with than the people that guide them...
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
TO needs to go someplace with a strong head coach, for a short term contract, short on gauranteed money but heavy on incentives - make him work for his big payoff.
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
go go tech guys. Good work!
Adam (Ohio)
Haha true, Tomlin is a cool dude, but I doubt Pitt would want him. He doesn't fit there, imo. And I think Miami can be checked right off the list of likely candidates for TO.
ESPNRadio.com (1:43 PM)
Is everyone excited for the impending Pops Mensah-Bonsu domination of the NBA with the Raptors?
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Exactly - not that I don't think someone will sign him, I just think that wherever it will be, won't work out well
Markus (Salt Lake City)
The only likely place for TO is the NFL equivalent to a graveyard, you all know where that is..................Oakland!
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Who what huh?
ESPNRadio.com (1:45 PM)
You heard it here first. I covered the guy at GW. He put up huge numbers in the D-League and with England's national team. Pops had 11 points and six rebounds in 12 minutes with the Spurs against Cleveland last Friday.
ESPNRadio.com (1:46 PM)
Also, his name translates to "king of the whale killers" because someone on his father's side of the family killed a whale with his bare hands at some point.
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
OK Frank - you lost me there...
Adam (Ohio)
Lol, of course! Haha, nah, that guy is really athletic but so is James White...
i-like-iowa-teams (NEIowa)
Time for work, sorry I got here late - chat wasn't up on the espnradio page and I forgot. Peace yall.
Markus (Salt Lake City)
????????????? Mensa? I thought they were the smart guys??
ESPNRadio.com (1:46 PM)
Well played. I salute you.
Adam (Ohio)
He's the dude that was cut by the Spurs. He did good in college from what I remember.
Markus (Salt Lake City)
Will definately keep an eye out for him..............
Adam (Ohio)
Yeah the end of that Cleveland game was some solid work, it was garbage time in the end though, so, Idk. Though the Spurs did make that run near the end before Wally hit that 3.
ESPNRadio.com (1:47 PM)
Is everyone happy that the long national Manny nightmare is over?
Adam (Ohio)
Yes. The Manny saga was ridiculous haha.
Adam (Ohio)
Yeah Shaq's comments were kind of out of line. Thing is though, why'd he take a shot at Stan's brother Jeff as well? What'd Jeff do? Jeff is great! haha.
Markus (Salt Lake City)
Are we ever!!! I mean, c'mon. Everyone knows that without Manny, LA is a AAA team at best.
ESPNRadio.com (1:53 PM)
Shaq is entertaining (especially on Twitter), but I thought his comments were a bit too much.
Morgan (PA)
A little late about the TO, but any chance he returns to the Eagles?
ESPNRadio.com (1:55 PM)
I would think not as long as Donovan McNabb and/or Andy Reid are there.
ESPNRadio.com (1:56 PM)
Five minutes to go!
ESPNRadio.com (1:56 PM)
Bold predictions for this next week. Let's hear what you've got.
Morgan (PA)
Now about 76ers, you think they will ever be serious title contenders in the next five years?
ESPNRadio.com (1:59 PM)
It's tough to be a title contender in the NBA. Aside from a few teams, the championship window is typically pretty small. That being said, I really like what the Sixers have on their roster (despite the slow start). However, I'm not sure Iguodala is a star. And at some point (whenever he's healthy), they will have to figure out how to play with Brand on the floor.
Dante (Texas)
The question was asked. Would you want TO on your team? I want him on my team. Cowboys fan.
Hosam (Philly)
You think Manny was really worth all that trouble to the Dodgers?
ESPNRadio.com (2:00 PM)
Yes. Los Angeles loves Manny. The city is crazy for him.
Todd (Va)
not with all the talent in the east on other stacked teams
Todd (Va)
The sixers still half to play orlando, cleaveland, detroit and boston. Its just bad timing 4 the sixers to have ne talent
Lisa (White Hall, MD)
Markus - try rooting for the Orioles - talk about AAA team
Todd (Va)
T.O might finish his career with a paycheck, but no championships. No legitimate contender would risk him as a distraction
Markus (Salt Lake City)
LOL! Touche' Lisa. Well at least your team hasn't lost the division on the last day, TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!!!!
ESPNRadio.com (2:04 PM)
Alright, folks. The time is up. We'll be back next Thursday. Keep on listening to Tirico & Van Pelt. Stay safe and take care of each other. It has been a pleasure.
