Live chat with Shaka Hislop
A hugely experienced goalkeeper who spent more than 10 years in the Premier League, Shaka was first spotted when playing for Howard University in the United States before moving to England with Reading.
Impressive performances for the Royals - he was twice voted Player of the Year - led to a move to Newcastle United in 1996. He spent three years at Newcastle before moving to London - where he was born - to West Ham United for the first of two spells.
Hislop's performances for the Hammers led to international recognition with Trinidad and Tobago, eventually winning 26 caps and playing in the 2006 World Cup.
After leaving West Ham he played for Portsmouth for three years before returning to Upton Park for one more season. He finished his career where it started, in the United States, with MLS side FC Dallas and retired in August 2007.
Shaka will be here on Wednesday, Match 11 at 7:30 p.m. GMT (2:30 p.m. ET). He'll be online before the games kick-off and will be watching all four Round of 16 ties. Ask him about any of these games as the drama unfolds!
(2:32 PM)
Shaka will be here at 3:15 and chatting live throughout all the Champions League games, get your questions in!
Mikkel, Philadelphia
Hello Shaka,Any chance Liverpool's magnificent display in attacking football last night would inspire Rafa to abandon the cowardly defensive tactics he's usually employing? Clearly, Liverpool can attack and entertain when he allows his players to play. But he'll probably be back to "parking the bus" at Old Trafford this weekend.
(3:34 PM)
The big complaint about rafa, from the Liverpool faithful anyway, is that at times he is far too defensive. I really do hope that yestrerday's performance shows that the Reds are every bit as good defensively when they attack as when they sit back. When gerrard and torres are the form that they were yesterday Liverpool are irresistable.
waqas ahmad chishti from Lahore (Pakistan)
Hi sir! i just want to know that what will be Inter's game plan. Will they psuh forward to get an away goal or just concentrate on defending so as to get a goal on counter-attack?Thank you very much!
(3:38 PM)
I'd like to see Inter attack. The one we know from mourinho in his time as Italy at least is that he is more than willing to throw 3,4 or 5 attackers on if he needs a goal. He's starting with Ibra and Balotelli, but don't be surprised to see Adriano, Cruz and Figo on there all at tyhe same time if Inter need a goal.
Nicholas - Mississauga, Ontario
Hislop, what is yr prediction on 2day's game between Man Utd and Inter Milan?
(3:42 PM)
Predicting this one has given me sleepeless nights! I've gone from 1-0 to Man U to 1-1, to 2-1 to Man U. I just can't see Inter winning, but find it hard to accpet that Inter just won't score either. So much depends on how Zlatan performs today. He needs to come up big time.
Andy (Danvers, MA)
Hi Shaka. Do you think that yesterday's performance by Liverpool was one of the all time greats in Champions League history?
(3:44 PM)
As great a performance as that was yesterday, Liverpool will always be remebered in the UCL for their comeback against Ac Milan in Turkey.
Ragavendra Minneapolis,MN
After Real's thrashing by Liverpool nobody seems to be noticing how Sporting were routed by Bayern Munich. Do you think Bayern are a threat to the big teams?
(3:46 PM)
I said yesterday that Bayern were excellent yesterday, and in the first leg, against a poor Sporting team. Unfortunately I just don't think that Bayers are a serious threat to the big boys. Ribery, who was rested yesterday, is the catalyst for them, he'll be heavily marked against whoever they come up against next...they may find it hard to progress.
Phil: (Chicago)
Do you think Ibrahimovic will be able to overcome his reputation in the Champion's League to make an impact on this game and even if he does will it be enough given England's dominance in this competition?
(3:48 PM)
Ibra NEEDS to step up big time. Let's be honest he was very disappointing in the first leg, and has that reputation in Europe. I still think he is the best striker in Europe tho. When Zlatan flops so does Inter
Dave (Barbados)
Hi Shaka, congrats on a good career?Lyon's chances of upsetting barca?
(3:50 PM)
I was worried a little earlier when I read that Benzema might not start. He is hurting tho...and probably so will Lyon fans...
Riyard (Trinidad)
Hey Shaka! Who do you think is going to open the scoring in the Inter Man U game today?
(3:52 PM)
I think Vidic will open the scoring! hahaha!! Man U scoring this early is the best thing for this game, inter have to come out now and as I was just saying Mourinho is very willing to throw caution out the window when needed.
(3:54 PM)
JUAN!!!!!!
(3:55 PM)
EXACTLY what that game needed as well!!!!
Riyard (Trinidad)
Shaka, what game are you looking forward to see the most today and why so?
(4:02 PM)
I'm looking forward to, and watching all 4! Man U-Inter is the BIG one, Arsenal are the best footballing team in England on their day, I've become a bit of a Roma fan over the last 18months or so (and have taken a lot of stick on Press Pass for it this season! Hahaha!), Barca-Lyon is potentially a classic and I think Atletico-Porto has all the makings of a great game.
Paresh (Ottawa, Canada)
I've watched a lot of Inter this season and cannot understand why they are rated so highly. They have been ordinary against Man Utd and but for their keeper would have been dead and buried by now. Ibrahimovic and Adriano are supposedly top quality but I've seen little evidence from Ibrahimovic of that when he's up against good defenders.
(4:12 PM)
Inter does as Zlatan does, that's their problem. Ibrahimovic, for me, is the best striker in Europe, but underwhelms in European competition. Anyone who has seen them consistently in Serie A knows how good both Zlatan and Inter can be.
(4:13 PM)
Barca-Lyon all but over! Henry with 2 goals already (3 in the tie) has almost single-handedly knocked his country men out!
Craig (liverpool , England)
Hey Shaka , do you feel that zlatan is way way overated and if not does his club form really justify the hype about him given the quality of the league?
(4:15 PM)
Craig I'm guessing you haven't seen a lot of him in Serie A. If you had the hype is justified. He won't win Player of the Year in the World/Europe if he doesn't step up in European competition...
(4:16 PM)
Right on cue! Zlatan should've scored that!!! Expect more chances to come Inter's way tho!
Hunt (oklahoma)
inters atack is super deadly ibra balotelli zanetti, too much for manchester? santon at the back can he stay with ronaldo? i believe he can we saw it in the first leg.. you thoughts though
(4:20 PM)
I think we all learned a lot, as did Jose, about Santon in the first leg. In the 1st half of the 1st leg he used Muntarri to protect Santon a little from ronaldo. He changed it in the second half and Santon coped very well indeed, and Inter looked a whole lot better in the second half. Santon CAN cope with CR...CR moved over to the left and played up against Maicon half way thru the second half. that says exactly how good santon is...keep in mind many regard Maicon as the best right back in the world!
Jason (Palm Harbor, Florida)
They say refs are impartial, but look at those two non-calls. I bet if it was 0-0 one would have been called. Be honest Shaka, when you played did you think refs were sometimes influenced by the game?
(4:20 PM)
ABSOLUTELY!!! I think they're actually better now than when I played tho.
Trinidad
Hi Shaka, What going with Ronaldino. I'm not seeing him at all? And what do you about Inter's performance so far in this game? Do you that Mourinho's strategy will overcome Alex Ferguson's strategy?
(4:23 PM)
He's injured...mysteriously by all accounts. We've discussed this on Press Pass, the doctors can't find anything wrong with him, tommy thinks he's just up to his old tricks again. I'm not passing judgement just yet and siding with the player. I've seen many an injury go undiagnosed during my time as a player.
Phil: (Chicago)
Shaka, which direction do you see the game going in Roma-Arsenal? Will the teams open up now and push for a win or will they try to stay tight and hope they can poach a goal on the counter-attack?
(4:24 PM)
The game will open up. It's not in Arsenal's DNA to sit back and defend. And Roma don't look like they have any intention of sitting back themselves.
(4:27 PM)
Ibrahimovic, and Stankovic, has both gone very close indeed! There's goals in this game!!!!
Wallace Trinidad Maracas
I know AS Roma have the talent to beat Arsenal, are you supporting them to achieve this victory!
(4:29 PM)
To be quite honest, I really don't care who wins (which might surprise a few) I only truly care about the teams I played for, and more a West Ham fan than anything! West ham to win the Champions League!!! hahahaha!!!
Paresh (Ottawa, Canada)
I take your point but the players who have impressed me the most are the left-back Davide Santon and the winger/striker Mario Balotelli. By the way I would put Fernando Torres up there ahead of Ibrahimovic in terms of the best in Europe. I watched quite a bit of him when he played for Atletico in a weakish team and he's been showing for Liverpool just how good he is - especially on the biggest stages (remember Euro 2008), which Ibrahimovic has rarely done.
(4:31 PM)
Point taken, still like Ibra tho. But Torres in yesterday's game is as good as Europe will see this season.
Sherwin (Trinidad, Maracas)
Who is really the better player, Messi or Ronaldo, i hope you are not canceling out Barcelona hope of winning the champions league.
(4:33 PM)
Messi for me...did you see his goal a minute ago? No way I'm writing off Barca, they've refound their form! It's between the winner at Old trafford today and barca...
ryan (go inter)
inters gonna come out super dangerous . do you think manchesters defence can hold inters attack led by the skillful ibrahimovic?
(4:43 PM)
Inter will be even better in the second half...they were getting better as the first half went on. This'll be a GREAT second half! I can't wait!
Paresh (Ottawa, Canada)
Barca have just been awesome in the first half. Messi, Henry and Eto'o - what if you had to face them Shaka?!
(4:44 PM)
If I had to face those three?! No problem!! I wouldn't even need a defense!! HAHAHAHA!!!
Ryan (oklahoma
can inter come back to win?
(4:46 PM)
Inter are getting better and better as this game, and indeed the tie, goes on. They can come back yes...will they? I have no idea! This is going to be one fantastic 45 minutes of football!
Ashley (newcastle Fan from nottingham) now living in Notre Dame,
shaka, you were a legend at newcastle, you mentioned you were a west ham especially bron in london but what was your best time in your career and what club holds a special place in your heart and why?
(4:48 PM)
Truthfully, I probably had the most fun at West Ham. It's also where I played my best football.Newcastle was easily my most successful period tho...things haven't been the same there since the mid 90's, disappointingly.
(4:49 PM)
LYON!!!! JUNINHO!!!!
(4:50 PM)
Still can't see them coming back tho...
(4:51 PM)
Valdes must hate Juninho...I wonder if he'll send him a birthday card this year?Lol!
(4:52 PM)
RONALDO!!!!!!!!
(4:52 PM)
RONALDO!!!!!!!!
(4:54 PM)
It's all over at Old Trafford surely...
(4:56 PM)
Balotelli's reaction to Ronaldo is what I don't like about him. Balotelli is talented yes, but needs to get a grip....
Alex Fu (Little Rock, Arkansas)
Dear Mr Hislop,What would you consider a greater achievement in your career? Being Hammer of the Year, or being voted Reading's greatest ever keeper?
(4:56 PM)
Keeping a clean sheet in the World Cup!
(4:57 PM)
Inter conceded in the first 3 minutes of either half, very disappointing...very surprising from one of Mourinho's teams.
Ryan (oklahoma)
might have beeen a little too much but ronaldo does dive all the time its like ronaldo should quit football and go to water polo
(4:59 PM)
Balotelli did it in the first game as well...Ronaldo does dive tho...
Paresh (Ottawa, Canada)
Can't see Arsenal coming through this Shaka - you? I remember a couple of sitters they missed in the first leg. Will they pay for that?
(5:01 PM)
Those missed chances in the first leg will haunt them. I would say that Roma should stroll this from, but Roma are every bit as inconsistent as Arsenal are.
(5:01 PM)
Mourinho throwing all caution to the wind!!
(5:02 PM)
ADRIANO!!!! How close was that!!!
(5:03 PM)
BERBATOV!!!! that miss may haunt Man U!
(5:11 PM)
And now here comes Figo!
(5:12 PM)
Cruz will be on soon enough as predicted...
Paresh (Ottawa, Canada)
Should have asked you this earlier but who's the best keeper in Europe in your opinion? Julio Cesar has been outstanding in both games.
(5:13 PM)
For me it's still Buffon. Cesar has been great in both legs and all season for Inter. Casillas still makes it in as #2 tho.
Phil: (Chicago)
Is there any way back for Inter right now or are Man U too strong in defense to allow 2 goals at home?
(5:14 PM)
If Inter get a goal anytime soon, it'll be thje most nerve-racking 20 minutes or so for both sets of fans!
ryan (oklahoma)
love how rooney has matured used to be he would yell or pull the at the player on the ground now he just walks away and helps him up rooney has showed he has got some class in him
(5:17 PM)
As good as Ronaldo is, Rooney is pivotal to Man U's successes. Early in his time at Old trafford pundits were saying that we'd seen the best of him at Everton...at the time (I was still playing) i said that that was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard...by that's "experts" for you! :-)
(5:18 PM)
Ibrahimovic has now had 3 good looks at goal!! He would've buried them in Seri A!
ryan (oklahoma)
shaka its alerady nerve racking for me big inter supported and ibra fan am a little dissapointed in the performce him and the team have shown. u think man u could take inter if inter was at there best?
(5:20 PM)
I have to asume that Inter ARE at their best. Their best just hasn't been good enough in Europe, they didn't even win their group. As an Inter fan what do you think of Mourinho and what his future will be if they go out here, considering he was brought in to win the UCL?
Phil: (Chicago)
Is there any explanation for Ibra's disappearance when it comes to European football? Has Serie A fallen that far in terms of quality when compared to the other European leagues?
(5:23 PM)
There's no explanation. I watch him just about every weekend in Serie A and can't understand how he can be this disappointing in Europe.
ryan (oklahoma)
theirs no doubt in my mind that europe football is a little toufer for inter but i believe they have it in them to beat this good tough man u team. i also believe in mourinho like him at chelsea and like hiim now. i think the players truly respect him and like playing for him and as for the champions league first season still has a little to work on with the team but they'll fight right through it. i mean they took serie a easy. dominated ac in the 2nd meeting i think they will be a force in the years coming
(5:27 PM)
Trouble is he was brought in to win the CL, they were already defending Seria A champions, three times. Mancini must be laughing his head off somewhere.
Phil: (Chicago)
In the Arsenal-Roma game, who has the advantage if it does go to penalties? Does Arsenal have more finishers that can win a shoot out?
(5:29 PM)
Do you bet against the Italians in a penalty shoot out? They're almost as deadly as the Germans when it comes to penalties.
Paresh (Ottawa, Canada)
From what I hear the Italian press aren't exactly in love with Mourinho Shaka - so the knives will be out after this. Abramovich dispensed with him for failing to win the CL and Mancini was axed by Inter for the same reasons. I think Mourinho will be given another crack by Inter though.
(5:30 PM)
He's probably on too much money for them to sack him right now. He'll get another crack, but only one.
ryan (oklahoma)
can u remember back last year when chelsea and man u met in the championship when john terry slipped and missed ? what were ur thoughts about that? to much pressure??
(5:31 PM)
Nah, just one of thos things for John Terry. It happens. I really felt for him.
Phil: (Chicago)
Which player in the Arsenal-Roma game would you least want to face having to save a penalty to stay alive?
(5:32 PM)
Hahahaha!! Probably van Persie. (Now if it goes to penalties he'll miss! Hahaha!)
(5:33 PM)
I guess it's safe to say that Man U are goping thru...and Barca, and Porto...
Riyard (Trinidad)
Do you see a penalty shootout in the Roma Asernal match? Or someone will win it before it reaches to that? I'd like to see a penalty shootout but I know its not the best judge of the better team.
(5:34 PM)
Penalties...after that Toure miss...
ryan (oklohoma
press do not like alot of people doesnt nescessaly mean that other dont i believe jose is a great manager i think hell be around. shaka there are rumors that mourinho might be takin over for fergy?? do you believe this
(5:36 PM)
not yet...he's got the credentials certainly, and the temperament, and the ego, to take over from fergie. he'll be a good fit for Man U.
(5:37 PM)
It's all over in 3 of the games now...
Phil: (Chicago)
With most of the games decided, what potential match-ups are you looking forward to in the quarterfinals?
(5:40 PM)
I'd love to see Barca-Chelsea. Two very talented teams with very contrasting styles.
(5:41 PM)
I thought that'd would've been a great game. Money is on roma right now...but not a lot...
Paresh (Ottawa, Canada)
I'm debating whether to carry on watching Roma-Arsenal Shaka! It's not been a thriller has it? Where's your money?
(5:41 PM)
I thought that'd would've been a great game. Money is on roma right now...but not a lot...
