Marathon Chat with Matthew Berry!
![]() |
Welcome to The Show! On Monday, we'll have another historic day as ESPN.com fantasy sports expert Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto - takes a shot at the SportsNation chat record.
It was back on MLB's 2008 Opening Day that Rob Neyer chatted from first pitch to last pitch and set the current mark of 12 hours, 1 minute. Now, the one and only Matthew Berry takes a shot at the hallowed record.
Fantasy baseball season is back and so is the TMR. Berry goes for the chat record to talk sleepers, busts, closers in waiting, rankings, keeper questions, the Anne Hathaway/Megan Fox debate, his dating life, minor league guys to watch, the ESPN Party at the Super Bowl and anything else you can think of. He's going to try and chat for over 12 hours so chances are if you ask, he'll answer!
13 hours, 12 minutes
, Fantasy Focus baseball podcast
, as well as some Diamond Debate video clips Berry will start his record attempt at 10 a.m. ET. Come on by and see if he chats non-stop until at least 10:02 p.m. ET for the new record!

Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:05 AM)
Few things: First, one of the big reasons I am doing this is to promote ESPN Fantasy Baseball. Want everyone to know that it's 100% free this year. FREE live scoring. Fully customizeable. Some other places claim free but then they charge you for live scoring or the only way you can play free is if you play by their rules. NOT the case here. We also have auction draft capability. ALSO FREE.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:05 AM)
So sogn up and play today.
Tim (Latrobe, PA)
At this rate....you'll only have to answer 4 questions to break the record. LET's GO!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:06 AM)
Dude, chill out. We're here for 12 hours. I gotta pace myself.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:06 AM)
All that said... I try to type as fast as possible, so I'll apologize right now for poor spelling, caps, grammar, etc.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:08 AM)
So... all subjects answered. Let's get to it and have some fun.,
J.L. (Bangkok, Thailand)
When you look up 4A in the dictionary, do you see a picture of:A) Nelson CruzB) Homer BaileyC) Andy MarteD) Andy LaRocheE) Brandon Wood
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:10 AM)
So far, sadly, the winner is Wood. I say that because I'm an Angels fan. I realize Wood has been having a good spring but he has yet to prove he can consistently hit big league pitching. K machine. I have high hope for Cruz this year and like him a lot as a sleeper.
J.L. (Bangkok, Thailand)
Why is Jose Guillen 200 ranked 200 slots lower than Ibanez? I'd rather have Ibanez, sure, but Guillen puts up the same power numbers, same lack of steals; is the batting average difference worth 200 slots?
J.L. (Bangkok, Thailand)
Matthew,In year one of a 12-team mixed league keeper league, when is it too soon to draft Matt Wieters? How about Travis Snider, Adam Lind, Cody Rasmus?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:14 AM)
Thailand in da house! Like both questions.... First, I'm with you on Guillen. I was one of 12 folks who contributed to the rankings... I'll be posting my owb personal top 250 later this week. Guillen is older, not as a friendly a park and has a history of injury... that said, when healthy, he hits and I agree, he shouldn't be that low. Another underrated/undervalued guy. Lotta Royals onn that list this year. I think anything before the 6th is too soon for Wieters... he's not gonna start this year in the majors. 7th or 8th is fine for a 12 team keeper. The rest should be grabbed at end of draft
Tim (Latrobe, PA)
Kidding you, man. Just wanted to be in there first. Loyal podcaster here. Seriously....how many years is ESPN going to offer this totally FREE fantasy sports?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:15 AM)
I can't imagine us ever going back.
Tim in Fort Collins, CO
First, Anne over Megan. Second, with your aversion to drafting closers too high, would you rather pick a closer who may or may not have the job with your final pick in a draft, or instead pick a position guy you don't mind cutting from the squad if a closer emerges out of nowhere?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:18 AM)
First, thank you sir. Second, I'll always draft a potential closer late since I don't bother with them early on. All depends on league size, who else you do have and who the pos player is, but in a vacuum? Go psuedo closer.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:19 AM)
By the way, I have about 800 songs on my ipod. Curious as to if I get through all of them today. I'm on song 3 right now. Van Halen's Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love. Occasionally I'll pop in with what is playing
Andrew (Syracuse)
Don't compare yourself to Simmons anymore. He's the man. Your not. Jose Lopez is also the man. Why is he being drafted so low?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:20 AM)
No idea on Lopez. I love him. He was a top 4 2b last yr in BA and RBI. Only 25. Hit .297 with 17/89 last yr. Love him. Maybe it's the seattle thing. By the way, PJ disagrees with you.
PJ (Middleboro MA)
First of all I love your work (I've listened to both podcasts since they started) more than the Sports Guy despite his Boston homerism but I digress I know you gave some of your sleepers on the BS Report but can you give us a sleeper in each position?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:21 AM)
I sorta did this with my All-Undervalued team... http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=tmr090306. But let me give you one each that WASn"T on that list...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:23 AM)
C: Gerald Laird in DET. No Pudge and the team will hit.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:23 AM)
1b: Mike Jacobs
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:24 AM)
2b: Orlando Hudson, esp w/ Manny there
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:25 AM)
SS: A healthy Troy Tulowitzki isn't getting love this year
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:25 AM)
3B; Mark Reynolds.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:27 AM)
OF: Matt Joyce in TB, Juan Rivera, I already mentioned Nelson Cruz, Franklin Gutierrez, Josh Anderson will steal 30 at least in Atlanta, even hitting low and crappy, DANIEL Murphy, Nyjer Morgan is another cheap source of speed...
Chris - Ipod
Do the math Berry. Even if the avg length of each song is 3 minutes (and that is LOW), then you have 2400 min of music to listen to in 720 min of chatting.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:28 AM)
I was told there would be no math
Matt ( St. Louis)
Love the austin Kearns story in your love hate. seriously though why do u hate him. wont he get tons of opportunity in that Nats lineup??
James, San Diego, CA
TMR,Which is more likely? The Padres winning the NL West or you dating a Ravitz sister?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:29 AM)
Put your money on the Pads but I'm worth a few bucks
Tim (Latrobe, PA)
TO in Buffalo?! Super early, off the top of your head...where do you have him amongst WRs in a PPR? And what does this do for Lee Evans' value?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:30 AM)
What the hell. Helps Evans and I have TO at bottom of top 10... in the 10-12 range. His value slightly lower in a PPR league because I think Edwards throws deep a lot and they will still run a decent amount in BUF... Like his as a sleeper actually tho
Bart (Toronto, ON)
I just started a career in MLB 09 "The Show" and Kearns is in AAA with my player. So the game predicts a down year as well.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:31 AM)
Haha
Nick (Chesterbrook, PA)
Do you really like all 800 songs in your iPod, or are you going to skip some of them?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:31 AM)
I'll probably skip the slow ones, yeah
seligrulz (portland,or) [via mobile]
Is Adam Jones a viable option for a fourth or fifth outfielder?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:34 AM)
More as a 5th. Like his upside quite a bit. By the way, I am skipping Paul Simon's Heart and Bones... now onto Elvis little less conversation remix... Jones has nice power speed potential but won't hit for avg.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:34 AM)
By the way, unless specified, I am answering assuming you are playing in an ESPN standard 5x5 10 team mix league
Mike (Nashville)
I hope you're on a laptop for ease in taking emergency bathroom breaks with all that Diet Coke flowing...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:35 AM)
in my office in Bristol. Plan on running back and forth.
John (NY)
Who puts up better fantasy numbers and who would you want on your team, Johnny Damon or Nelson Cruz?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:36 AM)
I'd probably take Cruz for the upside.... I do think Damon is decent however and will steal 25... he's also underrated. Depends what you need
Daniel (Raritan NJ)
What alcoholic drink would you recommend me drink while following your chat today? I'm trying to come up with a drinking game to go along with it as well, but its early and I'm having trouble getting my thoughts together.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:37 AM)
I say you do a shot everytime someone mentions the podcast, Anne Hathaway, Bill Simmons or insults me and you'll be feeling no pain by noon.
Brad (St. Louis)
Matt, you a Springsteen fan? You should check out The Hold Steady. They sound like Bruce if he just started to make CD's in the past decade.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:37 AM)
I am and I will. Thanks for the heads up
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
If Daniel wants to get smashed quickly, he can drink everytime you try to be funny/witty and fail.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:38 AM)
Or there's that way, too.
Jacob, MA
Have Daniel from NJ take a shot of bicardi everytime you mention "upside." He'll be passed out by noon.
Ryan Howard
Is there any way possible I hit .270 this year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:39 AM)
Sure. You get injured and that's your Triple AAA stats while rehabbing. Otherwise... no. BA on a 3 year decline. Just signed the big deal....
Nick (Chesterbrook, PA)
For the drinking guy, I'd recommend taking a drink whenever Berry makes an embarassing unironcial reference to popular culture. You should be good and plowed in about three hours.
Arty (Coeur D'Alene, ID)
We've all heard the speculation about where to draft A-Roid this year, what's your personal take on where to draft him?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:44 AM)
First, it depends on the league, of course. In an ESPN mix lg, 10 team... where you can get a solid replacement fairly simple... you can grab him earlier. But I am probably not touching him until rd 5. Keep in mind Stephania thinks 6-9 weeks is really optimistic for that kind of surgery and she is usually right on the money with that stuff. So I expect him back after June. Second... he'll be rusty - he might not be "AROD" util AS Break.... He won't wind up on any team of mine this year. Incidentally... We'll discuss on our podcast tomorrow (Fantasy Focus with me and Nate starts daily tomorrow!) but Nate just did the LABR draft... and AROD went for $22 in a NL Only, 12 team 5x5 lg.
Craig Madison, WI
BTW Danneel Harris is way hotter Anne Hathaway. Just sayin'
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:46 AM)
Don't know who that is.
David: Ontario, Canada
What is your gut feeling on the Rockies closer job.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:47 AM)
Corpas but I think both him and Street get double digit saves and neither get more than 20
Justin from HONG KONG
Hey Matthew, how do you think dice k will do this season. will he get 18+ wins?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:49 AM)
No. He doesn't pitch long enough into games... I'll say 14 and anything beyond that is gravy.
Bryan (Tulsa,OK)
Play the name game with...Shin-Soo ChooNelson CruzAdam JonesLastings MilledgeElijah Dukes
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:52 AM)
Rank them this way: Choo ; Cruz, Dukes, Milledge, Jones.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:52 AM)
But I have an unhealthy love for Dukes - so keep that in mind
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:53 AM)
By the way, first TYPO: A Rod went for $22 in AL only, of course.
Lungfish (Edison, NJ)
If ABC were to cast you as the next Bachelor, would one of the dates you took be to a live auction fantasy baseball draft?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:55 AM)
No for two reasons: One, they are so long it would kill any chance of romance. Two, you don't want to be distracted at an auction. I don't want to try and be interesting and charming there....Unless they are participating in the auction itself as a player (which I encourage) women have no business at an auction
Jake - Peabody, MA
Is it true you were asked to be on Dancing with the Stars?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:56 AM)
I wish. I'd do that in a heartbeat. I'm trying to think of a reality show I wouldn't be on....
Michael (RIchmond VA)
Are there any players on the Nationals that you would draft this year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (10:59 AM)
Sure... You know I love Dukes. Milledge should have a nice year. You know Dunn will hit 40. Zimmerman is solid at 3b, Flores is a nice #2 catcher and Hanrahan is a solid late rd closer. Deeper NL only leagues I'd take a shot on Wily MO and Willingham... plus Nick Johnson has to stay healthy ONE year, right? Maybe? Hello?
Jay Miami, FL
Dude, please stop talking about the future girlfriend / love interest you will never have. You are always ruining the BS report podcasts by talking about it and making fun of yourself. When will your the horrible stories of your love life end? Barry Bonds has a better chance winning a world series this year than you ever finding love.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:00 AM)
Please. It's not just the BS Report I ruin... On behalf of all the other content on ESPN I contribute to and ruin, I take offense
Spin, CA
Would you go on Fear Factor if it was still on?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:01 AM)
Okay, there's one I wouldn't do. I am a a VERY picky eater. That one would not go well for me. Survivor too I'd pass on. Suffice it to say I'm a fairly big wimp in some areas.
Joe (San Diego)
Utley, Sizemore or Reyes - standard scoring in a free ESPN keeper league
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:02 AM)
Reyes with Utley a very close second.
Bryan (Tulsa,OK)
Who are some often overlooked players that have All-Star talent but haven't been able to put it together in the majors yet? Last year would you have put Ludwick or Quentin in that category?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:06 AM)
Quentin yes, Ludwick no - he came out of nowhere for me last year. I'd be lying if I said I saw that. I did like Quentin tho - pretty sure he was on last year's LOVE/HATE. This year? Matt Joyce. Adam Lind. Shin Soo Choo. Josh Fields (w/out the avg) Howie Kendrick, Kaz Matsui, Franklin Gutierrez and of course Eljiah Dukes could all qualify there
Bryan (Tulsa,OK)
Who would win a hot dog eating contest between Gammons, Onley, and Kurkjian?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:08 AM)
all are professionals and come very prepared for whatever job they have, but I'll say Buster. He's the youngest of the 3 and newest kid on the block. He'd want it a bit more.
jim (NY)
Should I be worried about Ervin Santana starting the season on the DL?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:09 AM)
Yeah, a little. They say it's not serious but you can be a little worried. I drop him down a few notches but still would draft with confidence based on what I am hearing.
Matt (NY)
I have Brandon Morrow and Clayton Kershaw for $1 each, who would you rather keep? My inclination is Kershaw because of the league he plays in.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:10 AM)
You can't screw this one up. Both will be great. I'd probably say Morrow - he's a bit further along - but both are undervalued at that price
Grant (Baltimore)
He's right... I just Googled Danneel Harris, she's really hot.
Jon (CT)
considering how big a fantasy junkie you are how many fantasy baseball leagues do u activly participate in each year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:12 AM)
I usually play in 10 to 12 and actively participate in, like 3 to 5. I just get too busy. I'm really not fun to play with.... I care about my two long temr leagues - they first two I ever played in - they've been going for 25 years now - I care about an internal ESPN league that Simmons and a bunch of other muckity mucks are in and then I try to care about Tout Wars and that's about it
Harry Caray (Chicago)
Hey! If you were a hot dog...and you were starving, would you eat yourself?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:13 AM)
Hahaha. No. Just like hot dogs, I know what I eat and can only imagine what horrible things I am filled with. I eat terribly.
Rich Harden
Over/Under on 22.5 starts for me this year
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:14 AM)
I'll take the under. Originally I would have taken the over, but having talked to a few folks... I can't elaborate but I'm taking the under and I'll just leave it at that.
Burf (New Zealand)
Matthew, my buddy Fitz will be reading this in the states, and I was hoping you could post this comment for me: Burf, now the world knows I dunked right in your grill in 2000. The world knows!! You cant deny it anymore.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:14 AM)
I am nothing if not a man of the people.
John (Chicago)
A couple pitchers that slumped last year: Verlander, Harang and Bedard. Who do you think will rebound better this year? Good luck on the marathon....
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:16 AM)
Rank them Bedard, harang, Verlander. But like all of them. There's a TON of pitchers this year who will be undervalued duie to injury / poor perf last year that you can get later: Here's a bunch of them I like on that list...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:20 AM)
Brad Penny - angry with something to prove. Chien Ming Wang. Carl Pavano (in a deep AL only league I spend a buck or two to see). Bedard. Harang and Arroyo. Verlander. Zambrano (I don't believe but if he drops far enough...), Yovanni Gallardo! ; Wandy Rodriguez, Adam Wainwright, Chris Carpenter, Randy Wolf, Jason Schmidt (same as Pavano in NL) , Randy Johnson
Matt (NY)
Matthew, are you taking any PED's to break the record today?!?!
A-roid
Berry, you don't have a chance to last all day. but I do know a guy...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:21 AM)
I wish I was kidding when I told you I have 3 cases of Diet Coke in my office right now.
Rusty (Chicago)
Question about the Austin Kearns girl - was she really short? My friend's ex said she went with Kearns to the prom...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:22 AM)
No, she wasn't really short. I wish they would have let me post a picture of her. Email Tucker Max. Maybe he'll send you one. He has it.
Steve (Miami)
So what was Rob Neyer's reaction when he found out your were attempting to break his ESPN chat record?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:23 AM)
I don't know. Haven't heard from him.
Bryan (Tulsa,OK)
Who wins a staring contest between you and simmons?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:24 AM)
I do and it's not close. He's fidgety.
Mean (Frankfurt)
TMR! If you're chatting for 12 hours and don't get to this question...I'll feel like a loser. Costs are equal, who's a better keeper: Markakis or Kemp?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:25 AM)
I'll take Kemp. Feel like a winner! Or a loser for another reason.
Connor(winter park fl) [via mobile]
Who's most likely to bounce back Ryan Zimmerman, Troy Tulowitski, or? Robinson Cano(key west eta 6hours)
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:26 AM)
Troy with Cano a very close second. Like both a lot... Sort of feel Zim is what he is, you know?
Dan (Minnesota)
If you ever are in need of an upgrade at co-host, I'm available.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:28 AM)
Sweet! Nate, consider this a public warning!
Mike (Boston, MA)
Hi Matthew,Are there ground rules for this? Is this a free-for-all in terms of topics? Are you allowed to leave for any reason? Is there a reward you are working towards? Questions, questions, questions!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:30 AM)
Well, I've been told to keep my answers "Mickey Mouse" friendly and I've already gotten a call to can the drinking responses. Other than that? Not really. I'll try to answer everything with a focus on baseball. My reward is a job well done, a nation of more informed fantasy baseball owners and being able to act smug next time I see Neyer or Simmons in the ESPN Cafe
Brendan, Canada
Matthew, I made a last minute switch with my keepers and kept Joba over Garza... dumb choice?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:30 AM)
Not at all. Joba is sick.
Mark (Virginia)
What do you expect from Nady this year? Carlos Quentin? I have both at $10--keep both of them?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:31 AM)
Yes, absolutely. Like both to repeat.... Not worried about Nady's PT.
Kirk (Springfield, MO)
Imagine this, a question concerning A-Rod! Ok, so his injury came as a huge surprise. However, missing him last year for a month still netted me my first fantasy championship. In a 5x5 head to head keeper league (keep up to 5) in a 14 team mixed league, here's what I have - Russell Martin, Ryan Howard, A-Rod, Carlos Beltran, and Johan Santana. With a healty A-Rod the plan was to grab as many stud hitters I could early and work on pitching sleepers late with Johan as the anchor, but now without A-Rod the first month of the season I doubt there will be enough hitting out there to replace him. Would you instead draft the best pitchers available first, even going so far as to target good closers, and then fill in the hitting gaps later and set yourself up for some trades once A-Rod is back again?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:33 AM)
Nah, I think your original plan is still the right one. Still grab stud hitters. Pitching comes into the league much more frequently than hitting and there's lots of undervalued pitching this year
Ross (NY,NY)
Quick question....12-team dynasty league, down to one last decision on a keeper. Ethier at $4 or Wainwright at $7....please help
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:34 AM)
I like Either but Wainwright is a stud. Go Adam.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:35 AM)
Springsteen - Rosalita. NICE!
Ronathan (Oakland CA)
What is your ETA for Wieters? May? June? Other?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:36 AM)
June. They're gonna do the longoria deal with him (if there hadn't been an injury to force him up early last yr)
Questions
Do you just throw out the questions you don't want or can't answer?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:37 AM)
Yes, I pick and choose what I want to answer, to be honest. I mean, we're over 4000 at this point, so it's mostly just a numbers game... but yes, I have total control.
Todd (Birmingham, AL)
Is it to early to start telling you ideas to get into the "MANS LEAGUE" for football.. I have one that would force your hand to include me next year....
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:37 AM)
yes, too early for FB. We still haven't picked a way for BB yet
Mark (socal)
Matthew...now that ESPN dropped the "Talented" from your name in the newest commercial and, of course, we all know about the cell phone company that cannot be named debacle...is it reasonable to assume that you are unimportant enough to your employers that they really have no idea who you are?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:39 AM)
I'm okay with this one, actually. I think it was a time thing and Mr. Roto's Mailbag sounds better than Talented Mr. Roto's mailbag. But you realize, thanks to Alyssa Milano being in that commercial, you can now connect me to pretty much everyone using the Kevin Bacon game. I'm a step away from Tony Danza!
DONKEY LIPS (Lexington, Ky)
Mr. Berry: It looks as though you've grown back some hair! What product did you use?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:41 AM)
I can only assume you mean the big picture they are using to promote this chat... I haven't grown any hair back. That pic was taken when I first got to ESPN and my hair was longer. I've lost a little and I tend to wear it shorter these days. Suffiece to say I am losing it and going prematurely grey. I'm a hot mess. It's ridiculous.
Phil (Phoenixville, PA)
Isn't this "record chat" thing pretty silly? How do we know you don't have one of your interns or research assistants (or one of the Answer Guys) handling this for you while you annoy every single woman in the office all day?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:42 AM)
The answers would be a bit better if if weren't me, don'tcha think? And for the record, I annoy everyone, not just single women.
Mr. X
You answer a few good qeustions in a row, then you go back to some lame stuff. Its OK to deviate from Fantasy talk to pop culture, but then you answer dumb questions about you growing your hair back. Loyal readers know that you need to change your picture, you just work 26 hours a day and can't squeeze it in. NEXT!
Andrew (Mobile, AL) [via mobile]
How much fantasy value would you put on Jake Peavey this season?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:43 AM)
He's another guy that won't be on any team this year of mine. Considering where you have to take him... there are safer big name pitchers. Worried about his second half and injury w/ him
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:44 AM)
Oh boy. Ricky Martin. Livin La Vida Loca.
Finn - LI, NY
Berry, please give me a few $1 gems that you would look for in an AL only Roto league. THANKS.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:50 AM)
Ryan Freel and Ty Wiggington in BALT ; jed Lowrie, Rocco Baldelli, Fernando Perez, Joe Inglett, Brent Lillibridge, Jeff Larish, Brian Buscher, Brandon Wood, Eric Patterson, Chris Shelton, Andruw Jones for hitters would be among the $1 flyers...
Jim Bourbonnais, IL
First of all, good luck on achieving this record. I think it is a big step for fantasy geeks everywhere if you get it. Second of all, do you think if Troy Percival continues to have health problems that Grant Balfour is a smart pickup as a potential closer for the Rays?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:51 AM)
Thanks. And I like Balfour but I gotta assume Izzy gets first shot if Troy falters.
chris moorhead, minnesota
do you see francisco liriano having a 15 win season and do you think the twins can win their division.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:53 AM)
Yes and yes... Central will be close but Twins have a shot and I'm high on all thge pitching
Ari (Miami)
Auction strategy - what is the most you are willing to pay on one single player in a standard auction?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:54 AM)
I try VERY HARD not to break $40
Derek, Manhattan
Hey TMR. I have always held the belief that you don't take a pitcher, ANY pitcher, before the 8th round, 12-team, 5x5. It has done me well in the past. I am just wondering if you think this is a good strategy, or am i just insanely lucky? It's just that I always find deep starting pitching talent in the later rounds.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:55 AM)
In any mix league that is 10 or 12 team, I have no problem whatsoever with this stratgey.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:56 AM)
I am the same way. Pitching always comes into the league, it's more plentiful and it's easier to to find quality later
Everybody (Everywhere)
1st - I saw Andy Roddick play this weekend and his fiance texted the WHOLE game. Do you dump her for this... She is hot, but you are ANDY RODDICK playing in the DAVIS CUP?!?!?! 2nd. What would you say the worst job in sports is? I say the ball boy who runs out with a sweat towel, and runs back with it (after it is thrown to the ground) after every point!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (11:58 AM)
No, you do not dump her. If she was my gf and sitting here, you think I care if she is texting the whole time while I am chatting? As for worst job, that's not even close. Ticket salesman for the Clippers is pretty rough. Competing with Lakers, trying to sell that team, workiing on commish? Ugh. From a gross standpoint, I'd rather pick up tennis towels than hoops or football - those guys are much sweatier.
Jasper (philly)
Melvin Mora - what do you expect? And will he be a Yankee?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:00 PM)
23 / 85 and no, think he stays.
Jason Demers (Indpls, IN)
What's up Matt, I just wanna say congrats and good luck, but ok let's get serious, What do you think about Ryan Howard for Tim Lincecum and Conor Jackson? I was offered this trade I have Howard, I do have some power in my lineup, so it may be worth it. (Ludwick, McCann, D.Lee etc..
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:01 PM)
I do the deal. I'vebeen public about my BA concerns for Howard and Lincecum is ridiculous. Jackson is solid in BA and since you have power elsewhere....
Dan Wheeler (Tampa)
Am I an idiot for drafting myself...why do I get no love?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:01 PM)
because everyone else has seen you pitch. Izzy and Troy have better chances at saves and Balfour and Howell are better, period.
Ross (College Station, TX)
When is the podcast going to finally go daily? I need my fix!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:02 PM)
tomorrow I am told
Jeremy (New Orleans)
The powers at be don't want you to break the record! Your not even on the main stage.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:04 PM)
What can I say? Not everyone understands what we do about fantasy... it's the best thing ever! That's ok. I have my little place in the ESPN universe and am very lucky to have it....
Ben (Charlotte)
I'll be here with you for most of the marathon. Can you start it by telling me what you think of Fred Lewis?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:06 PM)
I actually like ALL of the SF outfield this year from an undervalued standpoint.... Rowand and Winn are both better than folks realize. Lewis will hit double digit HR, steal 25 and hit .285... solid little guy
Brian (Michigan)
Heard you on the BS Report, and yes Simmons is better than you.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:10 PM)
It's not a competition - we do different things here. But before he was a co-worker I was a fan, he helped me get my job here and he's better than most folks so... not sure what your point is? I am much better at him in fantasy tho. He's never beaten me in a league and I'm gonna beat him in our NBA league. He talks a lot of trash for a guy who keeps losing.
NICK (MN)
delmon young or fred lewis?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:10 PM)
Lewis
Andy (Boston)
Biggest loser? You for chatting 12 hours straight? Or us for sitting here submitting questions over and over for the entire thing? Project Hanley in the 3-hole vs. leadoff.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:16 PM)
Err, I'm getting paid for this so, you know... pretty sure it's you. I'm slightly worried about Hanley in the 3 hole - he wasn't as good there last year. But I still have him as my #1 overall so clearly I'm not worried that much. Slightly higher RBI, slightly lower runs, of course. That's about it. Maybe a slightly lower avg. Over his career, he's a .313 guy as leadoff, he's a .290 hitter as #3
Brian (Bryan, TX)
Do you think WBC performances will have any affect on fantasy - especially with Pudge and Pedro playing well?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:17 PM)
Yeah, a little. Def Pedro's gonna get signed... same for Pudge... so I think it does matter somewhat. Nice to see Melvin Mora look good - same for Nelson Cruz... stuff like that. But upset or no, I'm not touching Sidney Ponson, you know? Duffy - Mercy incidentally.
Eric (Albany)
What's it like being portrayed as a total jerk in the book Fantasyland?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:20 PM)
It was definitely weird reading about myself in the book... Sam had only so many pages so he had to kind of give a one line bio for each character... and I was the fast talking "Hollywood" type. It's definitely a part of my personality - both in fantasy and real life but no one is just one thing. I didn't feel I came off as a jerk - and most of the feedback I've gotten has been that I came off fairly well and funny. But often people bring their own perceptions to stuff... my guess is you think I'm a jerk before you ever read it. Which makes me wonder why you're here at the chat... but then again, that's sort of the secret to my success.... even the haters can't stay away.
Travis (Nashville)
David Murphy or Daniel Murphy?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:21 PM)
I'll say Daniel based only on playing time, but I like both of them. The news that Church is in a platoon and Daniel isn't pushes it over for me.
Marsh (StL)
Had my draft last night, my first 4 picks in order were (had 8th pick) Rollins, Cabrera, Manny, ARod. How'd I do? I got Chris Davis in the 8th round to plug in for ARod.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:21 PM)
love it actually
Googely Moogely
If you type in Matthew Berry on Google - one of the thing it predicts you are looking for - Matthew Berry Lincoln Freed The Saves - 54,300 search results. The loyal readers know the story - I just thought it was impressive.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:24 PM)
I can't wait to tell my friend that. She'll love that! She keeps wanting me to set her up with guys from my column. But she's a little nutty so I don't know...
Mike Plymouth MA
I want to be 1st to use "I was in the Matt Berry Marathon chat" as a pick up line. I'm in a 12 team h2h league. Have the 12th pick, is pick 13 too high to take Longoria?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:28 PM)
Wow. Worse than SG's mailbag or "I'm the TMR as a pick-up line. Yes, that's too early. I like him but he's basically Aramis Ramirez, you know? 30 and 110 give or take a few HR/RBI... We project him better than A Ram but not so much more that I'd go pick 13. The speed was a fluke I feel.
Jay, NJ
Another Fantasyland question: Did Sam Walker's galpal really distract you at the draft? Shame. Also, you didn't come off as a jerk. More like an incompetent fool.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:30 PM)
No, that was an insane part of the story. She was nice but nothing that would distract you at all. I couldn't even remember what she looked like when the book came out or that there had even been someone. Incompetent fool. Even better. See?
Jason (switzerland)
Whats the point of answering a question like the one from Marsh from St. Louis. Anyone can tell (including Marsh) that those first 4 picks are ridiculously good, and the only reason the guy asks the question in the first place is to basically brag (though really it just shows his league is super shallow or he's playing with idiots.) Plus, he's already drafted so nothing you say can help the guy anyway. That's my rant- More constructively, with both Pettitte and Joba blocking his spot as the 5th starter, in what round is good value to draft Phil Hughes?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:32 PM)
Well, I answered that one because i thought it was interesting to get Davis in the 8th when you draft A Rod 4th... It was because of the A Rod part I answered it. Late as possible on Hughes. Rather be a year late on him - not a guy I am touching except in deep leagues
Bill (Lafayette, IN)
Are there any guests that will be dropping in on your chat today? I was wondering if the Stephania bell might stop by and take a few questions?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:32 PM)
She is sitting at her desk about ten feet from me right now so if you have something for her, I'll ask. No promises. But hey, I got ten more hours to kill. Bring it on.
Butch (Toms River, NJ)
If a roommate brings home a girl, and she has a certain anatomy, demeanor, intelligence, and personality that would lead you to question her occupation, is it fair game to bring this to light in an attempt to satisfy your curiosity? or should you just let it slide and see if he slips something as to what she does late at nights...?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:34 PM)
Absolutely, fair game. But suggest you get input from as many people as possible before asking. "Dude, I asked all of your co-workers, friends, softball team and your mom about ___ and they all think...." what say you? That's what'd I'd do.
Gerard (Chicago)
What do you think about Armando Galarraga? Does he duplicate the low BABIP that he put up last season? Where do you draft him in a 10-team mixed league?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:37 PM)
I like him... I realize that there are a lot of things you can point to to say he was a fluke last year, but a 126/61 k/bb... he pitches in DET wand was even better on the road last year than at home... I would reach for him but I would draft him late, definitely.
Andrew (New York City, NY)
What's the ultimate TMR draft soundtrack. I want 5 songs to get me through my first 5 rounds of my next draft.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:38 PM)
I'm a big Eminem fan. I like angry, upbeat when I want to dominate
JB (Bloomington, IN)
Cubs fan here-- Thoughts on Mike Fontenot, Fukudome? And does Kevin Gregg have a shot at closing in Chicago this year? Thanks, keep up the good work TMR.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:41 PM)
Yes on Gregg - definitely. Really don't like Fukodome... and i know a lot of folks like Fontenot but at 29, he's never had regular PT and I think there's a reason. I could see him getting 12 / 50 with a .280 type year but not much better....
Nathan (Columbus, OH)
Why is no one worried about Pujols' offseason surgery. Is he a risky #1 overall pick?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:43 PM)
Because he played through it all last year, that's why. Look, five days ago we thought A Rod was a safe top pick so you never know. But he's pretty safe. Stephania is at lunch. I'll ask her when she gets back.
Billy (NYC)
I understand you have 12 hours to do it but can we get the A-rod hip surgery impact out of the way?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:46 PM)
I'm not touching him before 5th round. I say he ends up with 23 home runs, 10 SB, 60 RBI and .295.
I JUST READ FANTASYLAND!
Can you give your take on Yout wars, have you ever won?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:50 PM)
Nope,, never won. Finished 2nd two years ago. It's a good, tough league. We draft fairly early and it's realy deep... 12 team, AL only, 29 man rosters with unlimited DL... so a lot of it depends on how lucky you get at the auction with deep sleepers and how healthy you stay because there isn't a lot of dpeth in free agency so you can't do that much during the year and you draft before a lot of pos battles are known so there's a slight crap shoot factor - everyone in the league knows everything so it's not like you can sneak anyone by.... It is fun to draft against a lot of very smart good folks tho. i do think, however, it has almost nothing to do with how good or bad someone is as an analyst. different skill sets.
Jeff (L.A., CA)
Who wins the WBC?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:51 PM)
who cares?
Rob (NJ)
My girlfriend thinks you have potential and wants to take you under her wing. She thinks your taste in music is terrible and you need to stop playing the "I can't get a girlfriend card". She asked me what I thought and I told her you should just write more columns
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:56 PM)
Thanks, Rob. I actually do okay and have started dating someone recently. We'll see. To be honest, I'm really really picky, my love life makes for really good column stuff (I get amazing amounts of mail on it) and it amuses me. The "I can't get one" card is better than the "I'm dating everyone in sight, no?" I just always try to be as totally honest about everything in my life when I write / podcast / whatever. So if there's a time when I can't get a girl, I say that. As a married guy, Bill oves to bring it up because I'm one of the few guys he has on BS that is single and will talk about it, so it tends to get more play in his columns / podcasts than it might otherwise. As for more writing... I already produce more content than almost anyone at ESPN... you trying to kill me?
Chad (Florida)
You don't care about the WBC? What kind of "expert" are you? This is way better than spring training games.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:56 PM)
Care about performance? Yes. About who wins? Not at all.
Brian (Bryan, TX)
Dice-K or Verlander this year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (12:56 PM)
Dice-K. Not close.
Rory: (Villanova)
Can you ask Ms. Bell what her thoughts are on Ervin Santana?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:02 PM)
Just did... that was the delay. He has a MCL sprain which throws some red flags her way. She's actually working the phones rightnow trying to get a little more info... As far as I can tell from talking to her, the safe play is to not invest heavily. If you get him cheap / late... great. Otherwise... let someone else risk it.
Rob (NJ)
I know you produce a lot of content but I fall on the columns side of the arguement vs. podcasts. Good luck with the new girl. By the way we're 3 hours in and I'm not sure I've seen you mention Mike Cameron's name yet...isn't that a code violation at ESPN?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:04 PM)
First off, if we're just gonna keep track of my ESPN code violations we're gonna be here all much longer than 12 hours. It's not just those two things tho... it's also the online video show, the TV hits, radio, mag, chats, etc... It's a lot. And no one has asked about Mike. He's a 20/20 guy who hits .250. Money in the bank. No one ever gives him credit but there's somethingt o be said for a guy you can count on, can get late and will contribute in 4 categories.
Sean (Philly)
You seem to forget, we have seen you picture...do you think we would believe the "I'm dating everyone in sight" line?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:06 PM)
Never under estimate the power of women with low self esteem, questionable judgment and being impressed by a basic cable TV personality.
HAMMERTIME!!
Yo Berryman! Please discuss the following players that are oh so similar: Corey Hart, Jayson Werth, Nate McLouth, Alex Rios. Thoughts/rankings for this year? Thanks!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:07 PM)
Like all of them, of course. I say Hart, McLouth, Rios, Werth if I were ranking them but all are legit power speed guys...
John (Baghdad)
Hey Matt, love the column, me and a few guys over here are huge fans. I'm just curious, I have a mancrush with Grady Sizemore. Is it insane to take him in the top 5 in our draft?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:11 PM)
See? They love me in Baghdad! I think it's early, but listen. He's currently going 6th overall in ESPN drafts so, others agree with you. And either way, he's clearly not getting back to you in the second round... if he's the guy you like, grab him. Folks get too hung up on "is it too early / too late"... the final rankings will never be that close to the ones that start... It's your team - grab who you want when you want. Ranks are just to give you an idea about relative value.
Andy (Boston)
3 hours in and nothing on Man-Ram? What do you expect from him this year? Also, Manny, Carlos Lee or Carlos Beltran?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:13 PM)
More of the same. I'd rather have Beltran, but 30-35/100-115 out of Manny is about right. Dodgers are going to be solid this year
Bryce (Fort Worth)
I enjoy the input of you and Eric Karabell most. Do you have any colleagues who you especially appreciate their advice, or one you tend to disagree with?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:22 PM)
yes and no. Everyone I work with knows their stuff. When ESPN bought TMR and brought me in as Sr. Director, I hired eveyone we have except for Eric and Tristan and both of them are terrific, obviously. I enjoy arguing with Nate on the podcast, I think Chris Harris is fantastic... Stephania is amazing... Eric tends to be more conservative than I am, but he watches a ton of baseball and really knows his stuff.... whenever anyone has a question about something, we all ask Keith Lipscomb - dude is a sponge and knows, like, everything... Pierre Becquey is a terrific writer and the thing I love about AJ is that he is not afraid to think outside the box and give a totally different perspective on stuff which a lot of folks don't do. Brendan, James Quintong - long time guys I was a fan of in the industry before we stole them to come here... Jason Grey is a scouting stud, by the way. That's a guy who more people need to get to know. Probably not the answer you were looking for but seriously, I genuinely feel we have as deep and as good a team of fantasy analysts as anyone in the industry. I actually don't think it's that close, either.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:22 PM)
For the record, I am no longer Sr. Director or in charge of content... thanks to having such a great staff, I concentrate on just being a writer / analyst, which makes me much happier.
Dan (San Jose)
There's no way I'm inviting you to join my league this season. Not only would that would be weird, it would invite at least 6-8 months of scrutiny and imposters making jokes at my expense.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:23 PM)
Good idea.
Mark (Bellefonte, PA)
Love the addition of Stephania Bell to the staff. Was the idea of adding an injury specialist yours or someone else?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:25 PM)
We had injury specialists here before I got here, so no, not my idea tho i did think we shoul dhave one full time. Stephania had been writing for Rotowire and came to my attention through friends there and a guy named Eddie Apparicio and yeah... she's been terrific.. We joke about calling her Starphania but it's true. The big wigs here LOVE HER. She's a star on the rise at ESPN.
jd
TMR - what about drafting a-rod in a keeper? i'm in a 12 team 5x5, auction - last year a-rod went for $50 how much would you pay knowing you could keep a-rod for the nex 3 yrs?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:26 PM)
I still wouldn't go over $35... He's 33, he's hit "only" 35 hr two of the last three... if this surgery doesn't work he may have to have the more serious surgery which will keep him out rest of this year... Lotta red flags. Gotta bid, but I'd be cautious.
Dan (Philly)
Are you guys hiring fantasy writers? Where do the resumes go?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:28 PM)
No, we aren't. Sorry. I've done what I can... In addition to a lot of folks here, I gave a lot of folks their start in this industry - one of the things i am most proud of. Behrens and Evans, Herrera, Brinson and Snyder, David Young among the folks working elsewhere that started at the old TMR site.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:29 PM)
But check out fswa.org
chris (newark,ohio)
whats up matt? can u give me a realistic projection on "crush" davis? i got into a huge debate with a guy in my draft for takin him 47th...reach?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:30 PM)
Not at all. We're projecting him for 33 HR... a bit agressive but he's always hit. No reason to think he won't continue...
Danny (Monmouth)
Who are some good post-hype pitchers I should target? I was thinking about Parra and Bailey.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:35 PM)
With you on Parra... not with you on Bailey. Jeff Niemann in TB would be a guy. Kyle Davies in KC for AL Only. Love all the Twins guys esp Blackburn and SloweySean Gallagher in OAK is interesting. Andrew Miller in FLA is a post hype candidate... Micah Owings now in CIN, Max Scherezer, and I've been very public about my Ubaldo love
John (OK)
Matty B-What else is coming up in the Draft Kit? Any chance we'll get AL/NL-Only Auction values before opening day?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:36 PM)
I am told yes. As I mentioned in an earlier post... I no longer control the content. It IS, however, in VERY good hands - better than mine, frankly - Nate and Pierre handle - and I am told yes, soon.
Justin (Islip, NY)
Back to the reality shows...what about Big Brother? I remember chatting with u all the time about that show on ur old site...ud be great on that show!! What do u think of Way-rod...seems to be going real late
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:38 PM)
Yeah, I could do Big Brother I think. Though they have the eating gross stuff sometimes... plus the week of slop. So I'd pass. But love that show. Yeah, in leagues where you can do daily line-up Way Rod is an insane bargain. Wandy was lights out at home again and eventually he'll get the road stuff figured out. He was better on road in 2008 than in 07
Bill (Lafayette, IN)
Is pod vader involved in any fashion with this chat session today? Did Nate make it to work today? It looks like it might rain...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:39 PM)
that's actually very funny for anyone who listens to the podcast. And honestly, Nate WAS late to work today...
Mike (Cbus)
What's up with Pete Becker err... I mean Pierre?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:41 PM)
He'll be writing this year. He's overseeing a lot of our content, so that's his day job but he's too good a writer not to write this year. We're forcing the fomer Pete Becker to write and use his real name, Pierre Becquey.
Jordan (Toronto)
hey berry, do you actually ever talk to real players and coaches/gms? Not like we dont trust your opinions on stuff (you helped me win my football pool this year) but it seems like most of the stuff you write just comes off the top of your head
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:44 PM)
Yes, I do. And sometimes they are helpful... like Brian McCann told me last year that he had changed his off-season workout habits after having such a disappoiintng season and expected a bounce back. I predicted as such and looked very smart. I also spoke to Jeff Francouer who told me about his plan to steal, his added weight, his expected power increase... I predicted as such and looked like a moron. So... it, like everything, is a double edged sword. It's a combo of talking with scouts, managers, players... looking at stats, trends, research, talking with our ESPN guys like Gammons, Olney, Phillips, etc... and my own gut and what I glean from watching games plus my 20+ years playing fantasy and 10 years of writing about it professionally. And after all that... sometimes I am wrong becuase I can't, you know, predict the future.
Joe (STL)
What does it take to get a question answered around here?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:45 PM)
A better question than that
Danny (NY)
Is it me, or does Brendan Roberts' ESPN.com picture make him look like an axe murderer? An axe murderer with great fantasy advice.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:46 PM)
I know! Brendan NEVER takes a good photo. It was like that at his old gig too. He's the nicest guy, too. That's the hilarious part.
Corey (Seattle)
Is there anyway to ensure that you don't talk to real players or coaches? I don't want to draft Jeff Francouer again.
Rehder, Huntington
Everyone says I draft terrible, I went after Jair Jurrgens and Wandy Rod. late... is this bad or what do you think about their chances this season
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:47 PM)
Like Way Rod more... I wish Jair struck more guys out... but honestly, there's no such thing as a bad pick late. At that point it's all about upside and if they don't pan out., you drop them and get someone else. And clearly, both guys have a lot of upside.
Rob (Frankfort, IL)
Homer Bailey has allowed only one run in 8 innings so far in ST...He is still only 22 and could very well break out...Any reason why you don't like him???
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:48 PM)
Only 22, bad park, Dusty's no friend to the young pitcher and it's Spring Training. Calm down. Rather have Volquez and Cueto if I am going young in Cincy.
Camilo (Miami, FL)
YOOO! Matt! what do you think about David Purcey, Sean Marshall, and Jair Jurrjens?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (1:52 PM)
I already answered Jair... but I like Purcey. He's in my love hate... great #'s in the minors, was inconsistent last year w/ TOR but feel he puts it more together this year. As for Marshall, kind of feel he's kind of Ted Lilly-ish. Good, not great.. decent K's, decent wins... like him don't love him,
Garrett (Boston)
How come you seemed so grouchy during the RB interview? Can you not handle when other fantasy writers criticize you?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:06 PM)
I edited your ? b/c I don't feel like giving that site anymore pub... But, for those unaware, I recently gave an interview and basically, it was sort of an ambush interview. I was doing a whole bunch of interviews in a row to promote ESPN Fantasy - free live scoring, free to play, fully customizeable, auction drafts for free in case you missed it. And I didn't expect a hostile interview. It sort of took me unaware to be honest. All of the questions were basically "why are so stupid?" And it's like ... how do you answer that? He didn't have an interest in my answers only in trying to make me look bad and I just didn't feel like engaging. I'm fine with criticism from anyone - I think all of my work proves that - hell, I've printed some during this chat - but only if the criticism is legitimate and not of the "I'm smart, you're a moron, how do you respond?" type. I was disappointed in the final printed interview as he edited a lot of answers to shine a light on me a certain way and, more importantly, he didn't mention ESPN fantasy baseball at all - the whole reason for the interview. So not really grouchy but definitely didn't engage with him... Just thought it was a little minor league and the kind of thing that gives blogs a bad name. For the record, I am pro blog - read many good ones... but those that are anti-blog use examples like this to prove their point. And I've spent way too much time on this as is but as someone who has gone out of their way to help guys on small sites / struggling writers it was a disappointing experience to be ambushed like that. The fact that we over four hours in and this is the first question of 10,000 I got about it tells me not a lot of folks read it, either.,.. I was expecting a lot more questions on i
The Chef at Trumbull Kitchen
What is Matt Berry eating during this test of human fortitude? Our guess is sushi but grilled chicken is not out of the question.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:06 PM)
Turkey sandwich and yes, I spend a good deal of time at TK.
T.H. (Seattle)
Can I hear you throw in the line "my 20+ years playing fantasy and 10 years of writing about it" just one more time?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:07 PM)
I got 12 hours dude. You'll get it at least twice!
chuck (chicago)
What are your expectations of CC in the tough AL-East.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:10 PM)
I think he'll be solid, but not as much as folks think. You have to go back to Mussina in 2001 to find a pitcher who did BETTER in his first year with the NYY than he did the year before. I'll say 16-8, a 3.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 188 K in 200 ip. Remember, he signed a huge deal and he's also thrown over 500 innings (w/playoffs) the last two years... a few red flags. He won't be on any of my teams this year
Frank (LA)
What if Hanley Ramirez's steals come down this season due to moving to the 3 hole in the marlins lineup? Say he only steals 20-25 bases. Is he still worthy of the #1 pick?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:11 PM)
Yes, he is because who else would you take with his power ability, avg AND 25 steals?
Danny, Winnipeg, r3p1p2
what are the chances of you doing another long chat for football? What has been the biggest fantasy move in football FA this off season?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:13 PM)
Let's see how this one goes first but I'd be up for it. I have to say T.O.... It effects the fantasy value of Romo, Roy Williams, Trent Edwards, Lee Evans and, of course, himself... plus it makes Witten the clear #1 TE in my opinion.
Joe (San Diego)
Dude, your answer guy dept. is impressive. I just asked a technical question about league set up (couldn't remember where the appropriate contact was) and they responded saying they've forwarded it to the correct department. For as large as ESPN is, the insanely quick feedback from your help departments blows any other fantasy site out of the water. Props to you all.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:13 PM)
Thanks. We try.
Lance (DE)
How much of an impact will Smoltz have witht he Boston Red Sox organization? And how much of a of an impact will Smoltz leaving the Braves be to the team?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:14 PM)
From what I have heard, Smoltz isn't pitching until the second half for Boston but so far, so good. And I think he will help. Def. worth a few bucks in an AL only league... Braves will be fine.
J.D., Midwest
Have you ever tried drafting only pitchers and speed guys in a head-to-head league, with the hopes of winning all the pitching categories plus steals and maybe runs/average? In theory, it seems like if you could nearly guarantee winning 6 of 10 categories each week in a 5x5 setting.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:16 PM)
I've not only heard of it, I've suggested it. You have to be VERY disciplined to make it work, but it can... personally, I go a step further and draft only closers and top set-up guys. Ideally, you win ERA, Ratio, Saves, BA, SB, Runs every week if all you draft is lead off high avg guys like Ichiro, Reyes, etc and then load up on closers/setup guys
Joel (Fort Collins, CO)
Sorry if someone already asked this, but why is Joe Saunders ranked so low on ESPN? The guy is clearly legit.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:20 PM)
He doesn't strike a lot of guys out is one reason. Here's what is written in his projection profile which will give you the rankers feelings. I think he's too low, but not THAT low..."Everything, and we do mean everything, went Saunders' way last season. His peripherals were those of a pitcher more than a run higher in ERA, especially his anemic strikeout rate of 4.7 per nine, which was among the 10 lowest marks for starters in the big leagues, including many pitchers you definitely don't want on your fantasy team. A .267 average on balls in play will also likely correct itself. When you allow hitters to make a lot of contact, a lot of bad things can eventually happen. Be careful -- the bottom could fall out in a hurry here."
colin
what song you on
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:20 PM)
Another Elvis remix... Rubbereckin... I have a big Elvis thing...
Mike (AkroN)
Matt, love your chats, and loved you on the Simmons podcast. You guys are equally fantastic, although I still sorta hate for ruining my fantasy football league. Made it in the champioship and the guy I was playing was going to drop Tyler Thigpen but after reading your column he kept and I lost. Any who, has ABC called you about being the new bachelor yet?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:22 PM)
NO! I'm angry about it too... Ther has not been as big a TMR on the Bachelor movement as I would have hoped. We may have to kick this into high gear. Someone needs to start a website or facebook page or something
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
How are you holding up? Your responses still seem fairly lucid.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:22 PM)
So far, so good.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Isn't it Rubberneckin' by Elvis?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:22 PM)
yeah
Bryan (Deerfield Beach, FL.)
Alex Gordon - Over/Under: .275 Avg 20 Hrs 80 Rbis 15 Sbs 80 runs?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:23 PM)
slightly under.. but about right
Steiny (NYC)
Any thoughts on Jerry Ferrara and Jamie-Lynn Sigler? How long do you think they will last?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:24 PM)
I think those crazy kids got a shot. Turtle plays fantasy football so I'm rooting for him. Plus he's not great looking. I always like guys who get hotter than they deserve girls. Story of my life.
Bryan (Malden, MA)
Can we be facebook friends? I would love to see the various status updates you have throughout the day.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:26 PM)
We can not. I get tons of requests all day and I only add folks that I know in real life. Sorry. BUT you can follow me on Twitter as TheRealTMR. I do update that all day with the same things as my FB updates,,,, so you can get your cyberstalking TMR fix that way if you want.
J.D., Midwest
That's interesting about drafting only closers/speed guys. Any reason you lean that direction when trying to take 6 of 10 categories in a head-to-head leagues? Is it easier? More effective? More fun? I figured if I took starters/closers in the first 7 or 8 rounds (when everyone else was loading up on hitters), then filled in with speed guys later, I could take all five pitching categories most weeks plus stolen bases.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:27 PM)
Think it's easier to find high avg speed guys than high avg power guys, that's why. Clearly, avg HAS to be one of the cats... so it's either SB/Runs or RBI/HR b/c you need at least 3 out of 5 to make the strategy work.
Joesning (Detroi)
It's mid-March and I can't shake the Fantasy Football bug. I might be a terminal case (terminal, like the PC I sit at pondering Trent Edwards sleeper potential). Since I already have a lovely long-term girlfriend, I think I can avoid the lone pitfall of going pro. My query is this: If you were to have to climb back up to the top of the pseudo-celebrity world of Fantasy Sports, where and how would you start?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:32 PM)
Great question. If I had to start all over, where would I start? Hmmm. I would probably start by writing for as big a site as i could find to let me write for free. Just want to get my name out there. I would do something to brand myself and make myself memorable (like TMR - say what you want about the goofy nickname, but it's memorable and has served me well)... and i would look at where in the fantasy world there was something underserved and where I could fill a need. Like, I'd probably take TV/Radio classes... as you may have noticed there aren't a ton of folks doing this that are comfortable on mediums other than writing. So I'd get myself as good as possible on other platforms... I'd go to every conference I could and try to network. And ask everyone I know for contacts... A lot of it is about people you know...
Nate (Effingham)
Does Jorge De La Rosa's recent spring training struggles cause you to reconsider your "love" for him in your Love/Hate column?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:32 PM)
Nope. It's spring training. I don't care.
Tim (Fresno, CA)
Here's your Facebook page supporting making you the new bachelor!http://www.facebook.com/groups/create.php?customizeandgid=68249670228#/group.php?gid=68249670228
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:33 PM)
NOW THAT'S WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! Needs a decent photo and folks to join but yeah, baby! Love it.
Baxter the Bearcat (Binghamton)
Binghamton Basketball may make it to the tourney this year. WHOO!Russell Martin...alot of his value is tied up in stolen bases. If he continues with the high work load, it is safe to say his SBs will go down, along with a large part of his value. Do you agree? I have in him in a keeper league and I am worried that I should trade him now while he still has great value before he hurts me a season or 2 down the road. Thoughts?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:37 PM)
I'm with you... Like Jason Kendall way back in the day, you'll see Martin's SB's decrease as he gets older. Give me a second - I'm gonna look up what Martin did steals wise after Manny joined... my guess is they didn't need to manufacture as much offense once they got him. But yes, considering how deep C is this year, I think you trade him now at highest value. Talk up Manny, Furcal and ODog top of the line-up, blah blah blah
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:44 PM)
Martin stole 8 bases from Auguest 1 of last year on - when Manny joined the team - in 47 games. He stole 18 in 147 games overall so it seemed to increase a little with Manny there. Still say you deal because there is a slight decline in Sb year to year...
Mike (Indy)
Tell Nate(Effingham) that so far he's had the best Effing post yet.
Andrew (Philadelphia)
What's your A-Rod stance now: Trade him away or trade for him? What would you be willing to give up/take for him?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:47 PM)
I just have a bad feeling about A Rod... I'd trade away and if i could get a thitd / fourth round value for him - say Matt Holliday or Matt Kemp - I'd do it.
Brad (Minneapolis, MN)
You've talked about the Twins pitching staff, what about the platoon outfield? What are the best/worst values of Span/Cuddyer/Gomez/Young? You could even throw Kubel in there for good measure.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:49 PM)
I like Kubel in an AL only league, actually. I rank them Span, Gomez, Cuddyer, Kubel, Young.
Baxter the Bearcat (Binghamton)
Followup about Russel Martin...which catcher could i hope to get straight up or who would be worth getting? I doubt i would get the likes of weiters or mccanns.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:50 PM)
See, I don't think you try to go straight up for C. Get a "lesser" one - think Napoli or Doumit or Ianetta plus someone.
liam(Bosstown)
do u have an espn profile?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:52 PM)
Yup. http://sportsnation.espn.go.com/fans/MatthewBerry
Chris (PA)
Is Cameron Maybin a safe pick for a 5th Outfielder?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:54 PM)
Safe? Not at all. He has some upside, obviously... I personally think he's a year away as a 5th OF in a ten/12 team mix league... but no, he's not safe at all.
Rob, Philly
I Love You, Man. If i win the contest can i take you on my espn vip party in LA. Or are you already going with your lady friend?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:54 PM)
You bet. You win, you can take me.
Frank (Sioux Falls)
We need an Ipod update, please.....
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:54 PM)
Jimmy Buffett, Gyspies in the Palace. I'm a huge Parrothead, incidentally.
Karim (Atlanta)
Did you skip lunch today or did you make Podvader get you something? What's your opinion on BJ Upton - 30/30, top 10 potential?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:58 PM)
No, Keith Lipscomb brought me a turkey sandwich. Love that Keith! If he goes 30/30 then yes, he's top 10. He only hit 9 hr last year... 30 is a bit of a reach. Expect 20/30 and don't be surprised if he only hits 15. I like him a lot... but he's not a 30 hr guy
Eric (Frankfort, Ky)
what do you look for in late rounds, upside or solid numbers?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (2:59 PM)
late rounds? Always upside or to filla need. Like, if I have blown off saves, I'll draft a lot of psuedo closers. Or if I thin on speed I'll draft a bunch of ryan freel, rajai davis types and hope to get lucky.
Brody - Cleveland
TMR, my friends and I have an ongoing debate that maybe you can finally answer...is the Sports Gal hot? I think she's probably smoking, but some of my buddies disagree.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:00 PM)
I'm not sure it's appropriate for me to comment on a friend's wife and I've only met her twice. But suffice to say Bill did very well for himself on all levels.
Roddie (PA)
What do you think about giving up carlos lee for a rod and jayson werth?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:02 PM)
I'd do that in a heartbeat...I'm a Werth believer. You're taking on all the risk - Lee is as safe as it gets - but yeah, do the deal.
Sufjan Na, San Francisco
Chinese Food or Mexican?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:02 PM)
Chinese, no question.
Derrick (Simi Valley, CA)
I had the under at 30 minutes for the first Sports Guy reference. Now I have the over at 26+ total Simmons references. What are my chances...BTW: yes..I will gamble on just about anything.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:04 PM)
Depends. Does this count as a reference? What can I say? People are obsessed with Bill. You should see how many questions I'm NOT posting about him. Very few questions about any other ESPN personalities. A few about Erin Andrews, who I've only met twice. She was nice. But that's it.
Kevin, Philadelphia
Do you do streak for the cash? and if you do what is your longest streak and who do you like tonight?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:07 PM)
Yes, I do it. I'm terrible at it. My longest streak is 9 when we were doing it in beta. I like NO over ATL tonight... I tend to not go for road teams, but I also find our previews to be very helpful, like this one about that game: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/preview?gameId=290309001
Kevin Kalish (Boston, MA)
Greater achievement, breaking the chat record or winning the Simmonberry league?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:08 PM)
Breaking chat record. So far it hasn't been much of a league.
Maitiu (DC)
Alyssa Milano: Is she as hot in person as she is on TV? Did you get a chance to talk to her and just how much inappropriate flirting took place?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:12 PM)
She looks in person like she does on TV.... and none, actually. She's engaged. Got a huge rock on her finger. I talked to her briefly about coming on the podcast, which she is going to do in next few weeks. Sorry I don't have a better story. She was cool.
Jared (NY)
Simple questions: mclouth or granderson? shields or liriano?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:13 PM)
Gimme McClouth. Granderson doesn't steal - the one year was a fluke. And as much as I like Shields, Liriano is special, expecially considering he's now 100% healthy.
Dan Wheeler (Tampa)
So, you are taking the under in espn's projected team leading 24 saves for me? Who takes over when Kerry Wood can't close in Cleveland?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:14 PM)
Yeah, I disagree with our projections there. I say No TB guy gets more than 15 and that Troy, Izzy, Wheeler and Balfour all get between 5 and 15 with Howell getting 3 or 4...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:16 PM)
And don't be surprised to see Price in the mix early on if necessary. Word I heard was they are going Joba rules on Price this year and he's not going to start in rotation this year... They really like Jeff Niemann.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:17 PM)
Price will be in rotation eventually just not to start season.
Thomas (San Jose, CA)
Odd. No response to a legitimate question about how you feel about people with no playing background claiming to be "experts", but all over the "Chinese or Mexican" question. Just keep lobbing yourself those softballs....
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:19 PM)
Every time I hit refresh another 300 hundred questions come in.,,,Over 13000 questions have been submitted so far and I haven't read all of them so I didn't see this one. Ask it again.... Happy to respond to that one. The only ?'s I'm avoiding are ones that are off-color in nature or that I feel I can't give a good answer to for one reason or another.... We got another 7 hours to go so hey, bring it on. I'm not going anywhere!
Cody (Dalton, Ga)
Jorge Posada is in my fantasy league's free agency, should i pick him up? My other catcher is Jason Varitek
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:19 PM)
Not crazy about him but over V-Tek? You bet. Do it now. I'll wait.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:20 PM)
Eminem - Business
Brian (Bryan, TX)
What is Ian Stewart's upside? What's the reality? He qualifies at 2B in our league.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:21 PM)
I really like Stewart.. the problem is where does he play? If the Rockies can trade Atkins or helton, cool. If they let him play over Barmes, great... just not seeing more than 350 at bats right now and that means he's not draft worthy in 10 team mix...
Ryan Howard
I know you hate me but am I at least better than Kemp and the older Upton?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:22 PM)
Yes, but for me it doesn't matter. I won't take you / pay what it would take to get you. We won't be on the same team this year...
Ryan (Miami, FL)
We need a 20 years of experience reference!!!!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:23 PM)
Don't forget 10 years of writing professionally!
Mark (Denver, CO)
so you have been at this for about three and a half hours and I was just wondering how many cups of coffee you have downed and how many Pepsi's/Cokes...because in a 12 hour period of non stop computing mayhem I can down like 6-8 monsters :-p......Also do you think Fransisco Liriano should be ranked higher to lets say maybe around Lackey? Because it seems to me he is continuing is dominance from where he left off last season.. minus his first start this Spring training where he basically threw fast balls... what are your thoughts because I think he should be hire ranked
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:25 PM)
I'm about to pop Diet Coke #3 on the day... Been trying to pace myself because of the bathroom issue... I don't blame you on Liriano. The concern is still injury, team around him (it's a tough division) and Lackey is just so so solid. But I agree - Liriano could be the #1 pitcher in the AL this year fantasy wise when all is said and done.
Bryan (Boston) [via mobile]
have you ever introduced yourself as 'the talented mr. roto' to a woman while out on the town? I was thinking about using that line when I head out to the bar this weekend. but first I will need your blessing.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:29 PM)
Not to burst the SG Mailbag Propoganda but no, I've never used it. What DOES happen a lot is I will be out with friends and one of them will tell a girl "Do you know who he is??" And of course they don't, so they tell her I am the Talented Mr. Roto, which makes no sense to her, which I then spend about 20 minutes trying to make it seem slightly less dorky then it actually is. And guys who approach me in public NEVER do it when I'm talking to a girl.... like, it would be cool if they would come over and say hi or get a pic when I am talking to the girl, you know? Impress her kind of thing. Sigh. Never happens. They always wait until I am alone. The lot of a single, basic cable semi-obscure TV/internet personality. What are you going to do? It never ceases to be very funny, tho. My buddies and I always have fun when we go out.
Xavier Nady
Where did I get my horrible nickname?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:30 PM)
A producer on ESPN's First Take, Ed Eck, came up with the Un-Tier, since you always seem to untie the game when you are at bat. We did a podcast about it last year. I am helping Ed in his quest to get the worst nickname in sports to stick. Join the cause. Long live the Un-Tier! (Who I like this year)
John (Pittsburgh, PA)
Is Dustin Pedoria for real? Or will end regress to David Eckstein type status?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:33 PM)
I'm still not 100% sold on the power, to be honest. He never hit more than 13 HR in the minors before last year, let along the majors. Now, he's still young so the power developing could be somewhat legit... but I say I expect 10 to 12 with the high average and anything else you get is gravy. Everything else is real tho
Matt Holiday (Oakland)
Am I a top 10 player this year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:37 PM)
I think you could end up that ways, yeah. You should be drafted there but considering it's a contract year, you will most likely be traded in mid season,,, yes. You starred in the ESPN Fantasy commercial this year... last year it featured Hanley Ramirez and Chase Utley (and, um, Jorge Posasda).... so yes. I believe. You hit like .308 on the road last year... Tristan wrote a really good article about Holliday on OAK in our 30 questions series. http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=mlbdk2k9_30qathletics
Alexi Ramirez (Chiacgo)
Senor Berry- Am I a top 5 2b?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:37 PM)
Si, Senor. Very much so.
Brandon Lyon - Detroit, MI
Do you think I will win the Tiger's closing job this year, and will I hold onto it long enough to get 20 saves?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:39 PM)
Yes and no. I say you get about 17 saves.
Brad Red Deer
have you and Nate set out the qualifications for the Man's League yet? Still waiting on what I need to do to get in on this.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:40 PM)
Not yet. You can send your suggestion to fantasyfocus@espnradio.com... if we choose your suggestion you're in.
Steve (Denver)
What are your toughts on Tommy Hanson? He has looked pretty good so far this spring.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:42 PM)
Yeah, he has. I like him actually. Young pitchers are always risky but Atlanta obviously has had a lot of good success. Worth a flier very late but probably a year away from really contributing. I know they are really happy with him so far in the Braves system tho
Greg N. (OH)
Sonnanstine or Guthrie?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:44 PM)
The answer should be Sonnanstine but I like Guthrie. Just a guy who always delivered last year
Jordan (Chicago, IL)
Who has more saves this year in New York, Rivera or K-Rod?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:47 PM)
Rivera. I've been on record as saying KRod is due for a down year... big contract, pitching in NYC first time, overuse last year.... lotta red flags. Among the many reasons I say don't pay for saves
Brian (Houston, TX)
Since you never pay for saves, who do you think you can get in the last 8 rounds that can get you 20+ saves?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:49 PM)
Good followup: Brian Wilson, Frank Francisco, Joel Hanranhan, Matt Capps, Chris Perez, heath Bell and JOnathan Broxton among many others that have potential to.
Tom (Boulder,CO)
Howard just hit his 4th Spring Training HR.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:50 PM)
Heads up for those of you playing in Spring Training Fantasy Leagues. Dude, it's not his HR ability I question...
Cody (Orlando, FL)
How are you not answering my question? It has to be at least 1 out of every 5 you see...
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:51 PM)
You just answered your own question. It's a customer service question my friend. Call 1-888-549-ESPN
Joe M. (Morristown, NJ)
This chat is horrible. You have been chatting for 6 hours and refuse to take any basketball related questions. Simmons chats are so much better. I heard when you were on his podcast you mentioned Josh Smith being on your fantasy team. What do you expect of him the rest of the season?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:53 PM)
Everything Simmons does is better. Duh. I expect the same from Smith. 15 and 7 with a block or so. He's been a real disappointment this year, frankly...
Tyler (Milwaukee)
Do you still love Corey Hart? Even after his horrendous second half last year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:53 PM)
Yes, I do.
Sean (Westerly, Ri)
Better fantasy potential this year (for selfish keeper reasons): James Shields, Tulo, or Garrett Atkins?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:54 PM)
Atkins is safest, TT has the most upside....
Joe (Dayton)
If you're the Angels, would you rather have Arredondo or Fuentes closing games? I know they're going with Fuentes, but I really like Arredondo
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:57 PM)
I'm with you. And I think he gets the job efore all is said and done.
Chris (Hoboken, NJ)
How is Atkins the safest bet? Trade rumors swirling? He was also listed as one of the top 3bs in decline this weekend on the ESPN ticker?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (3:59 PM)
Because hitters are inherently safer than pitchers, he doesn't have health concerns of TT and I disagree with the ticker....
Plato (Athens)
Matthew Berry: A philosophical question. Do you think that Fantasy changes the way we look at certain players (either overvalues or undervalues) or that we as fans can successfully differentiate those players whose fantasy numbers exceed their production and vice versa?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:00 PM)
I think it's a lot of stuff. Fantasy production is one of them. Where you play is another. Derek Jeter, KC Royal isn't viewed the same way, I'm sorry. And if he wasn't articulate and good looking, that would also skew the view....
Ron (Little Rock)
When ESPN says top xxx [position] on the decline, do they mean these are the top players on the decline, and you should feel free to draft them because they are the top of those guys. Or do they mean, stay away because these guys are falling faster than anyone else in the game?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:01 PM)
It's meant to be an "avoid" kind of thing - busts, if you will.
Aaron (Ames, IA)
Alexei Ramirez reminds me a lot of Angel Berroa. Where am I wrong?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:01 PM)
Pretty much everywhere
David (Arlington VA)
Which players are so overvalued right now that they may be considered undervalued? Jeter?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:03 PM)
Actually, I'll say Joba for that one... He's going in the 13th round... 37th among pitchers.
Keith Law
Alexei Ramirez top 5 2b? Call me when he takes a pitch.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:04 PM)
They said the same about Soriano. Exception that proves the rule.
Brendan (Boston) [via mobile]
No love for the via mobiles todat TMR? Is youk a top 5 first baseman this year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:06 PM)
I've been taking mobile... I love the mobile folks. I don't think so, actually... Top 10, yes... but rather have Puljols, Cabrera, Tex, Berkman, Fielder among others...
Ryan (FL)
Your thing about the Rockies pitchers is absurd.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:06 PM)
Why? The numbers back me up.
Paul (Philadelphia)
Who's your candidate for a Desean Jackson Monday Night Football moment this season in baseball? What would the scenario be?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:08 PM)
Milton Bradley hitting a huge triple in the 9th and then running around the bases so fast he overtakes folks, causing two runs to not score, causing the last out of the inning and costing the oppsoing pitcher a win and the current pitcher the save.
Brendan (Wemouth)
Can you settle a bet for me? How tall is Nasty Nate Ravitz....I picture him somewhere between a Keebler Elf and a horse jockey for some reason. I have the under 5'8".
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:09 PM)
He is 5'9
Matt (Duluth)
What kind of year do you see Bruce having? Is there another young, emerging OF you like better?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:14 PM)
Shin Soo Choo I like more... I like Hart more... McLouth more...I have Bruce at 26 / 88 / 5 SB
Jay (M-boro)
Torre is talking about Ethier in the Three hole w/ Manny behind him. Will this improve his production?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:14 PM)
It don't hurt, you know? Not at all. Eric Clapton Forever Man, incidentally. Underrated.
Russ Jackson Akron Ohio
Is there any information on Travis Hafner's shoulder this spring? Where is he ranked this year?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:16 PM)
Yes. It's currently attached to a guy who used to be good. Watch him blow up since I am saying this but I've stuck a fork in him. Done. Dead. Bleah.
Steve (KC)
How early would you take Greinke? I think he's going to have a huge year and the Royals have a chance to put up some runs behind him.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:19 PM)
I agree with you. Zack is one of those post hype guys... He's currently going top of the 11th in ESPN drafts... Do you guys ever look at our average draft results? I find it to be very helpful..like here's the page for SP... http://games.espn.go.com/flb/livedraftresults?position=SPand I love the pop up player cards we have so you don't have to click away to see a guys projections... anyways, 9th round is abour right for Zack if you want to make sure you get him and go a little early.
Travis Hafner
I have 10 years of experience!!!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:19 PM)
Well played, sir. Well played.
Mike (Dallas, TX)
Hey Berry! We've only got 10 hours here...why do you always have to shtick it up?!
Matt (Duluth)
Follow up on Bruce, is he worth more for a keeper league? Unrelated: Isn't that Shaq playing scrabble commercial on ESPN one of the best you have ever seen? How'd you get so many "Q's"? Don't worry about it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfg0--GbjVI
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:22 PM)
Yes, of course he is worth more in a keeper league. Yeah, I like that one a lot. All the "This is SC" commercials are great... but my fave ESPN non SC commercial campaigns... I loved the Hoops Malone ones with Vitale a few years back, same for the CBB ones with Robert Goulet. The Rock Opera ones were fun for fantasy baseball...
George (I'll pick an obscure place like the Easter Islands inste
Any advice for a league switching from a snake to an auction on ESPN this year? We want to bring over 4 keepers from last year, but what's the best way? Should we use pre-assigned values?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:23 PM)
yes, best way would be to use ESPN auction values...
Billy (NY)
How come people who think you suck continue to read your chat for 6 hours, and then ask for advice? Anyways, quick question from someone who enjoys your writing: how do you project Theriot's 2009?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:26 PM)
.290, 21 SB for The Riot and well, I think you may have hit upon a secret of my success....
David Ortiz (MA)
Can I hit .300 with 40 home runs? Any chance?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:28 PM)
None whatsoever.
Ryan ( Canada)
is there any chance you are related to the gorgeous halle?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:28 PM)
You've never seen a picture of me or of Halle Berry, have you?
Tim (ABQ - NM)
You can't use the ESPN values if you bring keepers...the values will be off. You still have $260 but you're drafting 4 less players.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:33 PM)
You're wrong... in a start from scratch league that's what those guys would (should) go for, ostensibly. The other idea is just everyone keeps for "free" and it doesn't matter since $260 is fine for 23 players or 19 for everyone.. but with the money you at least compensate for the player values... A guy that has Hanley and Tex as opposed to Kemp and YoGa is in better shape but with the money at least you even it out, you know? Also, there's more strategy now... Without the money, you're keeping the 3 best players, period. But if you use the values, maybe you think we have someone too high or low... so now it's about the best value and that's a much closer experience to a true auction.
Adam (Boston, MA)
Has ESPN considered implementing a Slow Draft option for its fantasy sports? The draft would be conducted over a couple of days, each team would have a 24 hr time limit to make their choice. I'd like to see that option available for future seasons. Thanx Roto-dude
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:35 PM)
yeah, the tech team has lots of stuff like that on it's list... it's matter of resources... launching hockey, basketball and streak for the cash this year plus auction draft capability for all sports and our new game Hardcourt Madness (another game for the NCCA Tourney plus the typical bracket on Tournament Challenge)... they've been busy, trust me. But yes, everything is coming in time...
Jenn Sterger (FSU)
You are facebook friends with me, but I dont remember meeting you... ESPN just moved your link for this chat to a secondary headline... replaced by a story of woman concussions.. Thoughts????
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:38 PM)
Jenn worked on an ESPN pilot with me a few years back so actually, nice try, but I do know her. I wouldn't call us good friends but I do know her. And my thoughts are we gotta keep the questions coming! I still got like almost six hours still!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:39 PM)
Cody in Orlando.... It is what it is. That's all I can say. It's on the list to change but at the moment, it's what it is.
Johnson (WI)
How do you get your job? I would love to sit and talk about baseball for 12 hours and get paid!
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:39 PM)
Google me. There's lots of interviews with me about this ... My Wikipedia page has a semi-close version.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:40 PM)
Prince - The Flow.
Greg (Minnesota)
Why is your chat timer an hour behind?? You have been chatting for 6+ and it only says 5+. Daylight Savings?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:41 PM)
I don';t know. Huh. I'll send a note. I've been chatting since just after 10am ET. It's 4:40 here ET... so 6:40 now....
Rob (Philadelphia, PA)
iPhone or BlackBerry?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:42 PM)
I actually have both, sadly... BB is ESPN use - I use iPhone for everything else.
Jeremy (Waterville)
Haha, just wanted to tell you that your Wikipedia page was blanked and replaced with "is a machine!!!!!"
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:42 PM)
Really? Kind of funny, kind of sad. There was a bunch of stuff on it.
Doc (NJ)
I quit
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:43 PM)
Calling you out!!
Byron (Milwaukee)
I can only keep one: Alexi Ramirez or Corey Hart
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:43 PM)
Alexi based on pos scarcity
Eric (MN)
Do you weed throught these questions yourself, or is it your staff that has been shafting me all afternoon?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:44 PM)
It's me. I, and only I, am to blame.
Luke (Statesboro - the same Statesboro as in Statesboro Blues)
How's your dog, Macy?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:44 PM)
She's great. Thanks for asking, semi weird stalker guy...
Patrick (Cambridge, MA)
Your wikipedia page is still up. I think Jeremy was attempting to make a joke, you just didn't get it...you need another diet coke?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:45 PM)
Haha. Maybe. You never know with crap like that.
Adam (Delran, NJ)
When was the last time you checked your wiki page? "His mom wrote his name on his socks."True or damn internet lie?!?!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Berry
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:45 PM)
Haha. Been a while. That is a damn internet lie.
Ken B (Cincinnati OH)
Did Janet Becquey change her first name also? She was my favorite expert on the TMR site - a real sweetie, and always prompt.
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:46 PM)
Nope, she still does customer service for RotoPass.com - use espn for 10% off, incidentally - you get ESPN Insider with it... and her husband Pierre is one of our lead editors here at ESPN.
John (Syracuse)
Just realized you're an SU grad...thoughts on the team come the madness that is March?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:47 PM)
We finally have started playing better... my guess is we are Sweet 16 and out.
Jeremy ( Montreal, Qc)
espn average draft results have greinke going just before kazmir who is goingjust before gallardo. how would you rank these 3?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:49 PM)
For me, I go Yo Ga, Zack, Kazmir. Kazmir has never put together a full year... Just never been a huge fan... too inconsistent. Brilliant then... not so much
David (Pittsburgh)
Matt, no Pirates questions so far, not surprising. Any sleepers, undervalued guys on their roster that you like. Sanchez in a contract year? Either of the Laroches? Maholm?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:54 PM)
There's definitely value there. Doumit at catcher, of course. McLouth is legit, Morgan is anice source of cheap speed, LaRoche is gonna hit 20/80 again easy... and certainly, if McCutecheon can get PT (and I think he can) there's nice upside there. Plus you know I really like Maholm as a starter... very underrated.
JJ (Las Vegas NV) [via mobile]
go Skyhawks. what do u like more. Fantasy football or baseball?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:55 PM)
Another mobile question. I enjoy baseball to play - more skill but I enjoy writing / analyzing football more. So focused on the week's match-ups it makes it nice and easy to discuss in a minute or so, which all they give me on, say NFL Live or Baseball Tonighj
Steve (Austin)
Matthew-Whens the next podcast?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:57 PM)
There's actually a whole email string about that going on right now between me, Nate and Podvader. It will be tomorrow with me hosting - Nate can't be in the office tomorrow.
Frank (WA)
Lincecum or Utley 10 pick?
Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto (4:59 PM)
Def Utley - that's too high for Lincecum. Look, he's great and he is my #1 pitcher. But there's SO MUCH quality pitching and as great as he is there are other that are close in his talent range that I wouldn't do it. I probably won't take a pitcher until rd 5 at earliest. And if I do take one on that early, I won't draft another until rd 11
