So, watch the fights, then log on and Dan will be by Saturday night around 12:30 a.m. ET/11:30 p.m. CT to chat about those fights and any other boxing news you want to talk about.

Dan Rafael will host a special Rafael After Dark chat late, late Saturday night, following HBO's three fights on Boxing After Dark! He should be by around 12:30 a.m. ET, so get your questions in!
Dan Rafael (11:29 PM)
Greetings, Fight Freaks. That sure was a quick tripleheader with some excellent performances.
Dan Rafael (11:29 PM)
I thought Ortiz and Kirkland were outstanding. Big credit to Kirkland's relentless pressure. I was very disappointed that Guerrero elected to not at least try another round. Let's get to it.
Billy (Philly)
Owwwww! The love child!
Dan Rafael (11:29 PM)
Exactly.
Matt (St. Louis)
Julio's corner "no mas'd" him. He didnt object. The determination and relentless pressure of Kirkland was amazing. Julio goes back to the drawing board to rebuild his confidence....what do you think Kirkland tackles next?
Dan Rafael (11:31 PM)
I don't have an issue with Julio's corner pulling him out. He was basically run over by a very aggressive fighter who was soooo determined. All credit to Kirkland. He fought a great fight and I can't wait to see more of him. I know it won't happen next, but I would LOVE to see Kirkland against Angulo.
Stephen St. Louis
Bob Papa had a great line in the third round of the Kirkland/Julio Fight: "Julio threw the Kitchen sink at Kirkland, and Kirkland threw it right back at him"
James Kirkland (Austin, TX)
Sorry for beating up your son Dan.
Jon (Philly)
I have to say I was very disappointed with Guerrero. I think he could have made it through the round and gotten work done on that cut instead of giving up. Especially in front of his hometown fans, I think he took the easy way out.
Dan Rafael (11:33 PM)
I totally agree. He just seemed based on body language to see an easy way out, take his money and go home. Disappointing.
Scott (Brooklyn)
I thought the ortiz stoppage was premature. What ever happened to the standing 8 count?
Dan Rafael (11:36 PM)
Under ABC rules there is no standing eight count and that fight was under ABC rules. He was getting hammered (about 14 unanswered blows), not throwing back, cowering and took a brutal uppercut. I thought the stoppage was perfect.
Dan Rafael (11:36 PM)
And, by the way, Arnaoutis, didn't complain at all.
Kris (NYC, NY)
Good Evening Dan, My prayers to the Ghost and his family, but this boxing, you have keep fighting. Anyway,Kirkland vs. Martinez before the end of the year, Buy or Sell?
Dan Rafael (11:36 PM)
Kirkland-Martinez is very interesting. Martinez is way more skilled but Kirkland's pressure is ridiculous.
Matt (St. Louis)
I agree that Guerrero should have gutted it out another 10 - 15 seconds and see what his corner could do with the cut.....but it was a nasty cut afterall. It looked like a big "S" right through his eyebrow. Almost Harry Potterish. Ha!
Ryan Albany, NY
It seems that the love child's power isnt the same at 154 as it was at 147, where does he go from here
Dan Rafael (11:37 PM)
I agree. His power at 154 is nothing like it was at 147. I think Julio, at 24, takes a break and tries it again. Maybe back on ESPN or something along those lines.
Chris (Greensboro, NC)
How do they handle purses for a no decision?
Dan Rafael (11:37 PM)
They get their purses. The outcome is irrelevent.
Armando (Nj)
Dan - wow, Kirkland has got to be in the top 5 p4p most intimidating fighters today - did you see the way he was looking at Julio during the ref's instructions? he reminds me of a young tyson in that regard? do you agree?
Dan Rafael (11:38 PM)
Yup. The only missing was smoke coming out of his nose.
JSant (Tucson)
Agree with you Dan, appropriate, timely stoppage, we didnt need ten more seconds to confirm that Arn would get his lights shut off.
SL (NY)
can JOEL JULIO become a champion? I know he is young but he took a beating tonight.
Dan Rafael (11:38 PM)
You never know. In this era with so many belts a lot of guys not as good as Joel could cherry pick a title.
Mark (ATL)
Was the best performance we saw tonight was highlights of Ann Wolfe's KO of Vonda Ward? That KO was vicious!!!
Dan Rafael (11:39 PM)
That is one of the all-time sickest KOs. Probably the best women's KO of all time.
Tony(Tampa)
Thanks for the RAD chat. Kirkland reminds me of a bigger Aaron Pryor with his relentless style, solid chin, and heavy punch count. Although the Hawk could throw leather in more awkward angles.
Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)
Too bad for HBO on this one. They put together what seemed to be a great card and it just didn't work out that way. Oh well, I think the others this year make up for it. Good work anyway by HBO>
Dan Rafael (11:39 PM)
When the bell rings you just never know. All in all, it was an entertaining card. Ortiz and Kirkland shined very bright against quality opponents. Nothing to complain about. You can't expect the fight of the year every week. HBO is doing a great job.
Ochs (Webster, NY)
One thing to note is that Arnaoutis saw the punch coming and was bracing for it, but STILL got buzzed badly. Impressive power for Ortiz.
Dan Rafael (11:40 PM)
Ortiz has very good power and remember he is only 22.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
I thought Yordan looked pretty good prior to the stoppage. How do you think the fight would've played out had it continued?
Dan Rafael (11:40 PM)
I agree. He did look good. Tough style and seemed determined. He seemed to be frustrating Guerrero to a degree. I think ultimately Guerrero would have pulled away but Yordan would not have away easily.
John Lyons, Clevland.
Dan, it seems like Victor Ortiz is the perfect boxer. He has everything Speed, tremendous power and accuracy, great defense, outstanding headmovement, i mean what else could you ask for. But i dont think he should fight a top 10 opponent just yet because hes still only 22. He needs more rounds. Agreed?
Dan Rafael (11:42 PM)
One thing about Ortiz is we need to see what happens when he gets nailed. I've heard a lot of people whisper that he has weak chin. But other than that, he seems to have everything else you could want. There's no big rush for him but I think he can certainly handle a top 10 guy. Arnaoutis was probably about 12th or so anyway at 140.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, I've noticed, and I'm sure others have, that HBO is making a conscious decision to educate its viewers of the major players in each weight class of the fight being highlighted. Nice touch.
Dan Rafael (11:42 PM)
That is correct. Putting fights into context for the casual viewer/fan is important.
Franklin (Seattle)
Dan-O-Mite!!! Hey cat--I read thru yesterday's chat and seen that someone put your link for '10 Fights for Freaks' out...it had been a long while since I read it...first face I see is my man PoPo Freitas--and in re-reading the article I realized I've never seen his fight and KO of Anatoly Alexandrov. I've searched for it everywhere online and cannot find it. Have you seen it online or know where I can find it? Thanx....
Dan Rafael (11:43 PM)
I have no idea if it is online but I have a DVD of it. It is one the most chilling KOs I have ever seen and it was the fight that made me fall in love with Popo.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
D-Nice, Richard (Franklin Park, NJ) just did this same thing on Friday, but I'm also a longtime Freak and haven't been around in 9 months because of a new job (obviously, I read every transcript Friday night), but I wanted to pledge my loyalty to you and the Freaks (I've even been able to shake your hand a couple of times). Nevertheless, I bow down in apology for my absence.
Dan Rafael (11:43 PM)
You are forgiven.
Diego (Puerto Rico
dan do you think there is any chance we get ortiz vs devon alexander in the near future
Dan Rafael (11:44 PM)
Maybe down the road, but not likely this year.
Greg(Los Angeles)
I know it is easier said then done but Julio had a horrible strategy tonight. He should have put pressure on Kirkland rather then get on his bike all night.
Dan Rafael (11:44 PM)
I can't disagree. I thought Lennox (I think it was Lennox) made a great point that his footwork was all messed up.
joe (jersey)
do you favor kirkland over vernon forrest?
Dan Rafael (11:45 PM)
That would be an interesting fight. Vernon has so much experience and a good chin and a tremendous jab, but he's also in his late 30s and I am not sure he could handle Kirkland's crazy pressure for 12 rounds.
John (Cbus)
Did you hear Kellerman call out Guerrero between rounds 4 + 5? He said Kirkland would never quit over a cut in front of his home fans. Weak decision!!
Dan Rafael (11:45 PM)
I thought Max was dead on.
Dan Rafael (11:47 PM)
Sorry, the Bat Tex message is going crazy.
Chris (Waterville, ME)
Ortiz has the making to be the next "Golden Boy" type fighter....skills, personality, etc.
Dan Rafael (11:48 PM)
That is certainly what Golden Boy Promotions hopes.
Keiran(Syracuse,NY)
Dananana Bofanana...The fights tonight were short but sweet, I was wondering about maybe a future fight between Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo, & also who you think would get knocked out in that would be war.
Dan Rafael (11:48 PM)
Sensational fight that won't happen in the near future. I think I might to lean to Kirkland but who the hell knows?
Terrence (Sacramento)
Do you feel Max gave Arnaoutis too much credit for being a world-class fighter, and possibly an indication that Ortiz is ready to step ALL the way up? True, Arnaoutis is solid, but he's leagues away from the 1st and 2nd tier 140-lbers.
Dan Rafael (11:49 PM)
Arnaoutis was among the top dozen or so at 140. Not at the very top, but in the lower part of that group.
joe (jersey)
how about shane mosley? he likes to campaign occasionally at 154. I doubt he would do it because the $ wouldn't be big enough, but his foot speed could be trouble for kirkland.
Dan Rafael (11:49 PM)
No reason for Mosley to do a fight like that. No money relatively speaking and he promotes Kirkland so why would he want to possibly ruin his own fighter?
Daniel , Michigan
Do you think Lamont peterson vs victor ortiz is good for boxing considering they both have bright futures?
Dan Rafael (11:50 PM)
Lamont is an excellent technician and might give Ortiz problems, but I do not see that fight happening any time soon. All of these matchups are possible down the road when they are all more established or when they win titles.
Kevin (NYC)
Guerrero pulled a Rahman (vs Toney) and Judah (vs Clottey) Saw things weren't going to go his way and quit. Bad cut, but still. He quit way too easily.
Jason (Tucson, AZ)
DTM, any word on Hopkins' next fight? Is the potential match with Tomasz Adamek getting closer?
Dan Rafael (11:51 PM)
BHop wants it. I suspect the sides may be in touch shortly to see if it is doable. I hope it happens.
francisco (Puerto Rico)
if know kermit cintron has not looked good lately but do you think a fight between him and kirkland could be made if cintron decides to continue at 154.
Dan Rafael (11:51 PM)
Cintron would fold like a tent under Kirkland's pressure.
Doug B. - San Antonio, TX
I had the pleasure of meeting Kirkland here at the San Antonio Golden Gloves. He's by far the most humble and passive fighter I've met. Wow he sure does flip a switch once he steps inside the ring.
Dave, NJ
Is the Mike Alvarado fight airing on Azteca America tonight?
Dan Rafael (11:51 PM)
Yes.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, Buy or sell: Jorge Linares(injury free) has more upside than Victor Ortiz.
Dan Rafael (11:52 PM)
Sell. Ortiz has the charisma and doesn't have the injury problems. He is also heavier and American.
giuseppe (philly)
can i take the other side? if the cut does effect his vision, and they have to stop after, say round 6, he could get a decision loss that would be somewhat undeserving
Dan Rafael (11:53 PM)
The point we are making here is that even if the cut is bad, at least box another few seconds of the round and give the corner a chance to see what it can do.
Billy , Cleveland ohio
Man Dan HBO has been putting out great fights so far this year, what do you think the next big fight that will be made, after hatton-pacamn
Dan Rafael (11:53 PM)
Cotto-Clottey in June live on HBO, not on PPV. They are close to getting it done. That is another tremendous fight.
Ralph(jackson,ms)
Does this win propel Kirkland to a title shot?
Dan Rafael (11:55 PM)
Not quite yet.
Greg (Texas)
D$$, what did you think of that huge punch Kirkland threw on the break. Do you think he should have gotten more than just the warning he received from the ref?
Dan Rafael (11:57 PM)
I thought it was very weak and that the ref should have taken a point. In my view, he clearly hit him on the break.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Props to Arum for putting Cotto-Clottey on regular HBO.
Dan Rafael (11:57 PM)
It's a two-way street.
JSant (Tucson)
WOW, Cintron would get blitzed by Kirkland, that fight should be illegal.
Guanoman (Puerto Rico)
I was reading the notebook and it looks like Dibella is intereste in a collazo vs julio rematch in may 30 but if that fight does not happened do you think hbo will aprove Berto vs Quintana.
Dan Rafael (11:58 PM)
Berto-Collazo is very unlikely for May from what I am told and they don't want to fight Quintana either. I think DiBella and HBO are going to battle a lit bit over this one.
Tony(Tampa)
Dan, Chris John and now the Chino Latino(love that nickname) Yordan who looked sharp tonight. Is Indonesia the new untapped boxing pipeline?
Dan Rafael (11:59 PM)
May be. There are a lot of people there and a lot of them live in poverty. Boxing is a way to get out of poverty for people around the world and has been for decades.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Did you notice that HBO had both the records of Linares and Cook wrong? That was odd.
Dan Rafael (11:59 PM)
I did notice that immediately.
Ricky (PA)
Do you think there will be a Witter v. Bradley rematch?
Dan Rafael (12:00 AM)
For what purpose on earth? I see some Freaks have been drinking tonight.
Cole(UT)
I think HBO needs to have a camera at Larry Merchant's house when he's not calling the fight. I think cutting in to Larry inbetween rounds on his couch eating a sandwitch and giving his two cents would be good TV.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Did HBO turn down the idea of Campbell-Judah? I dont agree with that if they did.
Dan Rafael (12:03 AM)
Probably. I wouldn't buy it either. It serves no purpose. If you put one of them on you do it against a younger fighter with a future and make that younger fighter pass the test. Or you put one of them in a title fight. Having them fight each other in a fight that is not a natural rivalry (and they are not really the same size) makes no sense. It's not like it's a bad fight, but if I am HBO and using either guy, I am matching them with different opponents, not each other.
carlos staten island new york
kirkland is one tough hombre
Ricky Hatton (Manchester, England)
How many of me are there?
Dan Rafael (12:04 AM)
I have it on good authority, there is only one.
antonio margarito(mexico city)
dan i would load my glove with a bat and beat kirkland down
joshua fl
buy or sell urango vs ortiz
Dan Rafael (12:05 AM)
Now that's a fight I could see happening and would be a terrific BAD fight.
Cory (Dallas)
D$, your chats are the reason they invented the refresh key on the computer, the freaks appreciate it!
Charles (Philly)
The only time Kirkland backs up is when he's fighting the pickup truck!
Cory (Dallas)
DTM, How'd Mike Jones do in his fight?
Dan Rafael (12:06 AM)
He won last night on a second-round knockout of Dairo Esalas. Jones is one of my favorite prospects and I wish he'd get a chance on ESPN2 or ShoBox.
Pat (NY)
Since both are with GBP after tonight any chance of a Marquez/Ortiz fight in the near future?
Dan Rafael (12:07 AM)
No chance.
mrmarksmith
D-T-M, I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of any coherent instructions in Julio's corner. Even insisting at one point, after losing the round, that he "was doing great!"
Dan Rafael (12:07 AM)
Yes, his trainer seemed to be watching a different fight than I was.
Geraldo (Dale City,VA)
Danomite- Looks like Margarto is going to go through with a fight in Mexico which i disagree with! Will this affect his case to be reinstated in a year? Thanks
Dan Rafael (12:08 AM)
If he goes through with it, I do think it will be bad for him when he goes for his license again in California. But just because they are talking about a summer fight doesn't mean it will actually happen.
Bucky (Denver)
Just heard that Alverado scored a vicious kayo. Is Clottey ok? doesn't sound good.
Dan Rafael (12:09 AM)
He knocked Clottey out cold with one second left in the fight.
Will (South Dakota)
Think Hatton-Pacquiao can outsell PBF-DLH?
Dan Rafael (12:09 AM)
No way.
JSant (Tucson)
Dan, is it wrong that i can't look at Ortiz without thinking about Bojado? Both young and incredibly talented, great personalities....sorry, i have been hurt before
Dan Rafael (12:09 AM)
I can understand it. Hopefully, Ortiz turns out different.
Kintaro (New Haven, CT)
It really looked like Guerrero was asking for the fight to be stopped and the doctor and ref didn't feel should be and waved it off begrudingly. Couldn't that have been ruled a TKO then?
Dan Rafael (12:11 AM)
No, not when the injury was clearly caused by a butt and ruled as such.
Henry (London, England)
Do you think Devon Alexander should step up and fight Campbell, Witter, Holt/Bradley so soon?
Dan Rafael (12:12 AM)
Alexander and his team will fight just about anyone. LIterally. It is not them holding up fights.
Bo Jack (Los Angeles)
Dan, Kirkland is a pressure fighter, who lacks defense and footwork. Put him in there against Winky, P.Williams, and the A plus fighters and he will be exposed. He is not a big puncher, pressure yes, your thoughts..
Dan Rafael (12:12 AM)
I think a slick boxer would give him fits.
Jon (Philly)
All right. So using your idea could you see Judah against Ortiz which I think would be a very exciting fight and one HBO would have to buy.
Dan Rafael (12:13 AM)
Yes, now you are thinking like a TV exec.
Chief M......EYA Clw Florida
Mr. Rafael, I saw the ad for HBO's documentry on the Thrilla in Manilla. I will watch it but wonder what, if anything, new they'll bring to the legend? Do you know anything about the Doc.?
Dan Rafael (12:14 AM)
Just that it was produced by a British guy and it was sold to HBO. If HBO bought it and didn't produce it in house, you know it has to be good because HBO is very picky about that sort of thing.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Whenever LC would catch Kirkland with a big counter right or left hook I kept expecting Kirkland to get wobbled and it never happened. Were you as surprised as I was that Kirkland was able to walk through everything Julio had to offer?
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Who does DiBella want for Berto? A soft touch?
Dan Rafael (12:15 AM)
Somebody probably as soft as Gumby.
Matt H (Phx, AZ)
How about an HBO documentary on Corrales/Castillo I??
Dan Rafael (12:15 AM)
That is the dumbest thing I ever heard. Why would they do a docu on a modern fight that aired on Showtime?
Jeff (phoenix)
Dan, It's easy for all of us to question the Ghost's heart tonight but lets not forget that he's a proven stud and he had a huge gash running vertically up is head dumping blood into his eye.....I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Dan Rafael (12:16 AM)
So give it to him. You are the only one in this chat that I have seen comments from doing so.
Rob (OH)
Yeah Matt...maybe they can do Corrales-Castillo 24/7 while they're at it.
javier (Puerto Rico)
dan are you buying next week PPV between barrera vs khan if you are I would like to know what kind of chance do you give Roman Martinez of beating nicky cook I would also like to know if you are coming to Puerto Rico to cover the JML vs penalosa Card.
Dan Rafael (12:18 AM)
I'm definitely getting that PPV. I think it's a very good card at a very good price. Roman of course has a chance. Cook is good but nothing overwhelming. I will not be in PR for that fight, but I have been there to cover a fight before and it is a wonderful place.
D (Phoenix)
More intimidating: Kirkland's pre fight staredown or... Anne Wolfe??
Dan Rafael (12:18 AM)
Toss up.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
How about Malignaggi as a step-up fight for Ortiz? Though a fight with Judah would be fun, I think Ortiz might catch him pretty early. Malignaggi, at least, is a pretty good bet to give Ortiz some rounds.
Dan Rafael (12:20 AM)
Both would fit the bill as a step up for Victor. I would think his team would be more inclined to pick Paulie between the two because he is a smaller than Judah and can't punch at all.
Greg (Texas)
I loved when Kirkland answered Ann Wolfe with "yes maam", when she talked to him between rounds. How cool is it when a fighter knows their trainer could kick their ass if they don't follow instructions!
Dan Rafael (12:21 AM)
Exactly. They have a good relationship from what I have seen. He seems to really listen to her.
Steiny (NYC)
Dan I just wanted to say I meant Fighter of the Year so far. I apologize if you did not like my other crappy questions. I'm out. Be well everybody.
Dan Rafael (12:21 AM)
You are forgiven for yesterday's crap fest of questions. BUT how the hell can Pac be fighter of the year so far when he hasn't yet fought this year????
Tyler (Champaign, IL)
Dan, what did you think of the stoppage in the Ortiz-Arnaoutis fight? Premature?
Dan Rafael (12:21 AM)
Not at all. See my answer earlier in the chat.
Andy (Fairfax, VA)
If Hopkins fought Ademek and won, do you think he could lure Calzaghe out of retirement to fight him at cruiserweight?
Dan Rafael (12:22 AM)
Possibly.
Cole(UT)
I think Love Childs problem tonight was he probally didnt turn nearly as many 75 pound tires with a shovel as his opponent. Made all the difference.
Anthony (Sacramento)
Dan I thought Yordan landed the harder cleaner shots in round 1 and I scored it for him. How did you see it?
Dan Rafael (12:22 AM)
I thought it was a close round but I did give it to Guerrero.
jackson (bucks)
i believe hbo is doing a documentary on Dexter and Weeds
Paul B (NY, NY)
I am not sure if a wrecking ball would hurt Kirkland. Perro vs Kirkland would be epic! I actually think that Kirkland would take him out.
NJ (the cuse)
I havn't training like anne wolfes since the rocky movies Dan.
Cory (Dallas)
That was a nice little scrap on FNF last night. Thought Alvarez might get the late KO
Dan Rafael (12:24 AM)
That was an excellent main event last night. Rodriguez got a well-deserved decision in my opinion. I think he'd made a solid opponent for Berto.
Migs (NY, NY)
It seens to me Julio needs to drop back to 147 but he seems like he couldn't make the weight, your thoughts?
Dan Rafael (12:25 AM)
I think he could make 147 and would be more effective there than at 154.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
You mentioned a prospect by the name of Adrien Broner who's also known for his aggression. How does his style compare with that of Kirkland's?
Dan Rafael (12:25 AM)
He is very exciting, fights 100 mph, but he's a lightweight and I don't think the kind of puncher that Kirkland is.
Randy (NYC)
Does Kellerman have something against Guerrero? He was talking up Ortiz and Kirkland but seemed to intentionally leave out Guerrero on several occasions
Dan Rafael (12:27 AM)
Because he was probably unimpressed with the way he bailed on the fight.
Dan Rafael (12:27 AM)
I thought Max was dead on tonight.
Justin (Springfield, NJ)
Any potential opponents mentioned for Angulo if he were to land on the Dawson-Tarver undercard?
Dan Rafael (12:27 AM)
Not yet.
Joe (Pensacola, FL)
Dan, safe to assume there's no chance Guerrero will be on the Pac-Hatton undercard after that cut?
Dan Rafael (12:28 AM)
Probably not I would guess.
Cory (Dallas)
D$, any early nuggets from the Bat Text earlier?
Dan Rafael (12:28 AM)
None that are your business.
George (Rahway, NJ)
Dan, one word to describe tonights action...."SOLID"
Dan Rafael (12:28 AM)
Exactly! I have a friend at HBO who would have described it exacly the same way over an order of roasted boar.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
Will there be an undercard to the Juanma/Penalosa fight on HBO?
Dan Rafael (12:29 AM)
Yes, Peterson vs. Blain.
Frankie, NY
Has Malignaggi-Ortiz ever been disucssed? Who will Paulie fight next?
Dan Rafael (12:29 AM)
Not that I know of, just an idea in here tonight. Nothing doing at the moment for a fight for Paulie as far as I know. Lots of talk, but nothing solid.
Anthony (Sacramento)
Dan in another chat you mentioned that one of the winning fighters on tonights show could be asked to return to fight on an upcoming under card. Any idea who it will be and for which show?
Dan Rafael (12:30 AM)
I was told that Golden Boy's main slot on the May 2 PPV likely would be filled by either Juarez if he beat John or one of the winners from tonight. Well John and Guerrero got pretty badly cut, so I would guess they are out. I think it makes sense to bring back Ortiz, who was spectacular tonight and not in a tough fight like Kirkland was.
felix (Puerto Rico)
dan I HEAR BARRIOS IS OUT VS HERNANDEZ HAVE YOU HEARD OF ANY REPLACEMENT.
Dan Rafael (12:31 AM)
This is not true. I spoke to Golden Boy today about that exact issue. Barrios does have an ear injury but he is supposed to see a doctor on Monday before a decision is made.
Brian (Detroit)
Paul B, see the Kirkland v Allen Conyers fight if you want to see him hurt.
Mike
Dan who is Sampson Lukewitz?
Dan Rafael (12:32 AM)
Sampson is a promoter/agent who does a lot of work with Golden Boy and handles a lot of overseas fighters, including Chris John, Yordan and a ton of guys from South America. He's an excellent boxing guy.
Jose (Mexico City)
i personally think Paul Williams would drill mr. kirkland. what do you say sir?
Dan Rafael (12:34 AM)
Very tough fight for Kirkland. Williams is huge, tall, long armed and takes a good shot. Kirkland might have trouble getting in on him and Williams throws a lot of punches, including a good jab. He could be a nightmare for Kirkland, especially at this stage of his career.
Paul B (NY, NY)
I believe that Max made the comment that Dzindziruk was actually the #1 guy at 154. Isn't that a stretch when he hasn't fought many A fighters?
Dan Rafael (12:35 AM)
154 is really a division without a king. Sergei is undefeated and has quality wins over guys like Daniel Santos and Julio, so it's not an unreasonable comment since there is no overwhelming choice for No. 1 at 154.
Stephen (St. Louis)
Dan, I know we only saw little more than one round of Yordan, but I was intrigued and would go out of my way to watch more of him.
Dan Rafael (12:35 AM)
I was ringside for his other US fight in Vegas last year and he won a lackluster decision. I was not nearly as impressed with him that night as I was tonight in the two rounds.
NJ (the cuse)
I think Ortiz had the best line, "Now I can get Taco Bell or something."
Dan Rafael (12:36 AM)
He's so adorable.
Jon (Philly)
This might just be my personal opinion, but if they bring Ortiz back for the Hatton/Pacman undercard, it better be against someone solid like Arnaoutis tonight. He's too good for another Jeff Resto
Dan Rafael (12:36 AM)
I totally agree.
Tino (NYC)
Guerrero basically got a free pass for quitting...imagine if it was Wladimir Klitschko who did the same thing???
Dan Rafael (12:36 AM)
Guerrero is not getting a free pass. Max ripped him and the Freaks are all over him like Kirkland on the Love Child.
Patrick (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
How close are they to finalizing Haye-Wlad? Any chances its a no go?
Dan Rafael (12:37 AM)
The fight is dead in the water as of right now regardless of what you may have read elsewhere.
Tyler (Champaign, IL)
Buy or sell: Kirkland-Julio the most disappointing fight of the year so far.
Dan Rafael (12:37 AM)
Not at all. It was quite an entertaining fight I thought and a new star emerged.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Did Banks pull out of the Dirrell fight?
Dan Rafael (12:38 AM)
Well yes and no. He didn't really have a choice. I am told he is out of the fight because he went to jail.
joe (jersey)
wow you really have seen everyone fight live
Dan Rafael (12:38 AM)
Not everyone but a lot of guys obviously. When I cover a fight, I am typically there for the first bell and watch all of the undercards.
Paul B (NY, NY)
Stephen (St Louis) and a few others were saying that they were intrigued by Yordan. I do agree that he was skilled but I was already getting frustrated with his holding and we were only in round 2! Am I out of line here?
Dan Rafael (12:39 AM)
Not at all. He was holding a lot but it was effective type holding not John Ruiz holding.
Greg (Texas)
Buy or Sell: Tyler for banishment
Dan Rafael (12:39 AM)
We'll give him another chace.
Dave, NJ
Dan if Haye is out for Wlad on June 20 and Arreola has a fight with McCline, who do you think he will fight?
Dan Rafael (12:40 AM)
Remains to be seen. But I wouldn't be shocked if he stayed in Europe and fought somebody like Dimitrenko.
Cory (Dallas)
If Kirkland-Julio is the most disappointing fight of the year, this is going to one HELLAVA year!
Dan Rafael (12:40 AM)
Well said Freak.
Cole(UT)
I'm already counting down to April 11th, not because the Williams v Wright fight, or even the Thilla in Manilla documentray. Its because a 24/7 with Floyd Sr in it starts.
Tony(Tampa)
Julio-Kirkland fight reminded me of the Cotto-Margarito bout except Kirkland beat his man down without the use of anvils-in-the-handwraps a la Margarito.
Jamerson (White Plains, NY)
Dan the MANimal....being the Cotto fan that I am, this Clottey fight scares me.... Where are you leaning at this early (& admittedly still 'presumptuous') juncture...?
Dan Rafael (12:41 AM)
Way too soon to say. Let them get the fight signed and then we'll talk.
Patrick (Ft. Lauderdale)
I remember in one of your chats a while back you said that you would be in Youngstown for the Pavlik-Cotto doubleheader, then you ended up going to MSG. What was the reason for the change?
Dan Rafael (12:42 AM)
The card in NYC was WAY better overall and I was supposed to go do the FNF studio the night before so it would be a lot easier to go to Bristol from NYC and then back to NYC after the show. Ultimately, the schedule was changed but I didn't change where I would be at that point.
NJ (The Cuse)
Guerrero quit the match. Neither the ref or the doctor was goign to stop. He quit. Give the title to the other guy.
Dan Rafael (12:43 AM)
One problem boss. It wasn't a title fight of any note.
Randy(NYC)
I was disappointed with the Kirkland/Julio fight because I think Julio could have been more effective if he boxed and pressed the action more, instead of running and holding. I think hes a lot better than he looked tonight
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Dan, Don King seems to have slowly faded out of the Boxing spotlight that he seemed to love so much. Without any "must see" fighters and all are we seeing the last of Mr. "Only in America?"
Dan Rafael (12:45 AM)
DK has let his boxing empire crumble. It's almost sad. His company has been gutted in terms of fighters and employees. There's really nothing left at this point except memories and a video library.
Tyler (Champaign, IL)
Dan the only reason I thought the Kirkland-Julio fight was disappointing was because it was pretty one-sided and Julio's effort was pretty disappointing for a guy basically fighting for his career.
Dan Rafael (12:45 AM)
I dont think it's fair to question Julio's effort. He was trying but just outgunned.
Jean (jersey)
IF a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound? If we NEVER see Wlad Klitschko fight again, would anyone care???
Dan Rafael (12:46 AM)
Probably a lot of Germans, but I understand your point.
Ryan (Durham, NC)
Why would HBO not approve Berto - Quintana that sounds like a very legitimate title fight to me.
Dan Rafael (12:46 AM)
HBO would take that fight in a heartbeat. DiBella doesn't want to do it.
Cory (Dallas)
The one stud that King has is Devon Alexander and he's got him locked in a closet. Sucks
Brian (Detroit)
So Dan, is Might Mike now relegated to gatekeeper status at 140?
Dan Rafael (12:48 AM)
Pretty much. What a horrifc performance. Dude didn't throw any punches and didn't even look like he wanted to.
Cole(UT)
Do you think HBO/Dibella would put Berto in with Anne Wolfe?
Dan Rafael (12:48 AM)
Why do you have to go there?
Scott: (Bloomington MN)
Just a thought, but wouldn't a new legendary nights show showcasing some of the best wars of the last 10 years be awesome!!! With some great fights in HBO's aresanal, I'd love to see one on Gatti-Ward I.
Dan Rafael (12:49 AM)
I am desperate to see a new batch of Legendary Nights episodes.
Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)
Dan, Much love for the RAD! I and the other freaks thank you for putting the right touch on a night of great boxing.
Dan Rafael (12:49 AM)
My pleasure.
Robert (KY)
How about Ann Wolfe vs Kirkland!! That'd be a slobberknocker!
Franklin (Seattle)
Callin' all Freaks---if anyone knows or can find the link to Acelino 'Popo' Freitas KO of Anatoly Alexandrov....Holla....I wanna see what our father Freak, Dan Raf calls 'bone chilling'
Joe (Stamford, CT)
As outlandish as it might seem, I think the one guy that Kirkland has to fear at 154 is Martinez, even more so than Paul Williams. I think that a slick boxer-counterpuncher type will have the most success against Kirkland.
Victor (Salt Lake City, Utah)
King freak, any suggestion on where to find fight posters?
Dan Rafael (12:50 AM)
As I have said many, many times in these chats -- check out a SPboxing.com.
Cole(UT)
Speaking as a non-german, I have about as much desire in watching another Wlad Klitschko fight as I do the beach volleyball scene from Top Gun.
Jean (jersey)
We are all desperate to see some new Legendary Nights episodes....ARE YOU LISTENING HBO...
Frank Booth (Lumberton, NC)
Dan from U.N.C.L.E.-- Adamek vs. Maccarinelli...who ya got?
Dan Rafael (12:51 AM)
I think Adamek would drill Enzo.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
So "Thrilla in Manila" was not produced in house at HBO? Does that mean someone other than Liev Schrieber will narrate?! The guy is a huge part of what makes those HBO Sports docs great.
Dan Rafael (12:52 AM)
No, I am told Liev will voice it over.
Rags
Did HBO really turn down Judah-Campbell in favor of Malignaggi-Campbell, or is it yet another bad internet rumor?
Dan Rafael (12:52 AM)
Bad rumors. Neither fight is set for HBO. Just relax.
Zach MPLS
Dan, I don't want to sound mean but can you remember the last time a Buddy Mcgirt fighter not just won, but didn't totally get his butt whipped? I mean it used to be a joke but now its getting kind of sad, i feal bad for Buddy and his fighters.
Dan Rafael (12:54 AM)
Buddy is on a brutal run right now.
D (Phoenix)
Most impressive '08 Olympian turned pro so far: Andrade, Russell Jr, or Korobov?
Dan Rafael (12:54 AM)
All three have looked good but I think Korobov has looked the most impressive.
Kevin
How about Alvarado-Ortiz for the Hatton-Pacquiao co-main???
Dan Rafael (12:54 AM)
Wont happen. They have the same manager.
Doc nyc
Yesterday you said haye wlad was on.
Dan Rafael (12:56 AM)
Things chance every five minutes in boxing. A whole day is like a year sometimes. The fight is dead as of right now this minute. I have spoken to both sides today.
MIKE(San Jose)
Just got back from the fight, Your thoughts on the Booo's from the crowd directed towards Oscar de la hoya? Is his legacy tarnished?
Dan Rafael (12:57 AM)
Why would Oscar's legacy be tarnished? Because he lost a fight? Please.
Mark (ATL)
Did the short "warm up" time (because the previous 2 fights ended very early) affect Love Child. He seemed to start very slow.
Dan Rafael (12:58 AM)
I think it probably did. But like Max said, Kirkland had the same situation and he was just fine.
Brian (Atlanta, GA)
Dan, Do you think Kirkland is ready for someone like a Cory Spinks or a Vernon Forrest?
Dan Rafael (12:59 AM)
If anyone made Kirkland against Spinks, they should be thrown in prison for life. Who in the world want to see Spinks fight him?
Chris (Greensboro, NC)
I was surprised to hear that Max say Jorge Linares mostly fights in Japan. How did he end up there?
Dan Rafael (1:00 AM)
He is signed with Teiken Promotions, the biggest promoter in Japan. He speaks fluent Japanese and lives there.
jean (jersey)
Banishment to anyone who brings up Cory Spinks
James (The Cities)
Any thoughts on Julio's footwork? He looks so uncoordinated dancing around the ring...
Dan Rafael (1:03 AM)
It was terrible. If he would have sat down on some of his punches, they may have had more impact. But he was backing up on so many of them he didn't get full leverage.
Cole(Ut)
Dan, You think Victor Ortiz really was going to Taco Bell or was he looking for an endorsement? He probally made enough money from the fight to afford at least Sizzler.
Dan Rafael (1:04 AM)
Knowing Victor a little bit, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he went to the drive thru at the closest Taco Bell to the arena.
Cole(UT)
Julio's footwork looked great if he was doing the shuttle run at the NFL combine.
Rags
Your thoughts on the WBA naming Ruiz that mandatory, apparently skipping right past Meehan & Bidenko....
Dan Rafael (1:06 AM)
Gee, the WBA doing something revolting and disgusting? John Ruiz as a mandatory for about the 86th time makes me want to absolutely vomit my brains out all over you.
Victor (Salt Lake City, Utah)
My girlfriend gave me a homework assignment, I need to find Mayweather/Hatton Poster. Any Advice?
Dan Rafael (1:07 AM)
Yeah, go to SPboxing.com.
InSaneInTheMembrane
Do you ever wonder what it would have been like Castillo and Corralles III?
Dan Rafael (1:08 AM)
Well I was there in Vegas for it and it got canceled at the weigh in. I was not happy to have wasted my time for that trip.
Ochs (Webster, NY)
Zab Judah after a punch from Kostya Tsyzu thought Julio had good footwork.
Dan Rafael (1:08 AM)
Hilarious.
Jared Mayweather (Harrisburg)
Ortiz looks da*n good to, how long until he is ready to make a HUGE jump and start mixing it up with the P4P guys like JMM, Pac and Ricky Fatton?
Dan Rafael (1:10 AM)
Still needs a couple of fights I think but before the end of the year I expect him in something significant.
Mike (NYC)
I guess I am the only one but I didn't think Julio was that bad tonight, it was just Kirkland was that good. And to me, I thought the announcers were talking up Kirkland too much even when Julio I felt was throwing good punches and combo's. Did you feel they were shilling a bit for the house fighter (Kirkland)?
Dan Rafael (1:11 AM)
Maybe just a little.
Greg (Texas)
OMG. Did someone mention John Ruiz? I think I'm going to be sick.
bill (pgh)
Kirkland is a stud!!!! He looks like a 154 lb Tyson with less speed.
Rui (Nutley, NJ)
What do you think about Victor Ortiz fighting Nate Campbell? Too soon for Ortiz?
Dan Rafael (1:18 AM)
Interesting fight.
Kevin
If Haye-Wlad is "dead"...are there any compelling heavyweight fights on the horizon???
Dan Rafael (1:19 AM)
Not really.
Braindamaged2too...(Asylum)
Dan the MAN!, I suffer from time to time from severe insomnia. Specifically is there 2 or 3 fights you can recommend to put the snooze on?
Dan Rafael (1:20 AM)
John Ruiz vs anyone.
Dan Rafael (1:21 AM)
That was the Bat Phone.
Dan Rafael (1:22 AM)
So you've all been asking when Ortiz would fight next. I was talking to his manager, Shelly Finkel. He said Victor likely would either be on May 2 on the Hatton-Pac undercard or on June 27 on Boxing After Dark. No opponents were discussed.
Bradley Edwards (Richmond, VA)
Mike Jones. Starting to hear a little buzz about him. Have you seen alot of him? How far can he go at 147?
Dan Rafael (1:23 AM)
Mike is a fine prospect with good size and power. Just needs experience.
Greg (Texas)
Now, that's some bat s--t! you da man, dan!
Bradley Edwards (Richmond, VA)
Someone on the chat Friday called McCline a retread. McCline is the perfect fighter for Arreola at this point! He fights hard and can take a shot. The odds of stopping him early are slim. Thus, Arreola should get in some rounds against a guy who has been in with some of the best heavyweights of the past decade.
Dan Rafael (1:24 AM)
Perfectly said.
Los Angeles, CA
Hey Dan what are your thoughts on Juan Manuel Marquez going up in weight?
Dan Rafael (1:25 AM)
Wherever he can make the most money is where he should go.
Brad ( Navarre, Fl)
Dan, who is the opponent you would most like to see Shane Mosley fight, and who do you think he fights next? thanks
Dan Rafael (1:26 AM)
I have no idea who he will fight but I would like to see him fight Mayweather.
Kevin
Does Shelly ever sleep? :-)
Dan Rafael (1:26 AM)
Well, he is on the West Coast at the fights tonight, so it's early there.
Dave, NJ
What happened to FOX showing fights on the Best Damn Sports Show Period? They haven't shown any since Froch-Pascal.
Dan Rafael (1:26 AM)
They showed Inkin-Balszy.
mrmarksmith
Dan, With all the love (well deserved) for V.Ortiz and the hopes for more great fights, who w/the fighter makes the call as to whom the next opponet will be? And how often, when the money is there, do fighters take fights they know they might lose?
Dan Rafael (1:27 AM)
Picking the opponent will be a combination of his managers, Golden Boy and HBO, if HBO televises it.
todd (sf, calif)
just got back from the fight. i had a hunch you'd still be going strong.
Dan Rafael (1:27 AM)
But of course.
joe (jersey)
anik crapped out after one hour of chatting over there. take that MMA!
Dan Rafael (1:28 AM)
My boy Anik can't carry my jock.
Jordan (Upstate NY)
I gotta defend Guerrero here. If the man can't see then the man can't see. That was a really bad cut in an even worse spot. He would have fought on at a massive, massive disadvantage if he chose to.
Dan Rafael (1:29 AM)
The point folks here are making is that you suck it up for the last few seconds of the round and let your cutman do his thing. If it's still bad and you can't see, then maybe you pull out. But not the way he did. He was basically convincing the ref and doctor to stop the fight.
Steve,Sac,Ca
Dano, what's jammin in the background?
Dan Rafael (1:29 AM)
A little live Police.
Jim Lampley
And Dan comes online as if to say "Okay, I'm ready to chat, because this is my forum, and I'm ready to defend it, and you can't compete with me..."
Chris M. (Toronto)
"Rafael After Dark"....... incredible late-night chat with the best boxing fans on earth, or sleazy porno?
Joanne McLeod (Ottawa)
Ivan Calderon versus Ricardo Lopez at 105.... wow what a fight that would have been.... who do you have?
Dan Rafael (1:30 AM)
I love both guys, but I would take Lopez. Great puncher, great technically.
Greene, NJ
Dan! Great info as always. I got my tix to Taylor-Froch. Who u got? Tough to judge cuz Froch hasn't fought a lot of top contenders? JT hand speed to much? Always respect your opinion
Dan Rafael (1:31 AM)
I think it will be a helluva fight and competitive but I do like Taylor in that one.
Chris M. (Toronto)
Dan In Real Life, I was looking at some of the vids I took from the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight, and I've got a classic one of me talking with Roger Mayweather in the MGM Grand lobby, and you casually strolling by in the background without a care in the world......... at about 3AM in the morning haha! Just business as usual for you, eh?
Dan Rafael (1:31 AM)
Nice. Business as usual Freak.
Nick (Raleigh)
I don't no how anyone can defend Guerrero, the guy quit on his hometown fans, why not let your corner take a look and see what they can do, at the very least that is what he should have done rather than whimping out like that...LAME
Mikey(Canastota)
Last year I was kickin it with Angelo Dundee and Bert Sugar at the hall of fame and I was like where is Dangaroo at???
Dan Rafael (1:32 AM)
I was at a big fight that weekend.
Joe (Stamford, CT)
Robert Guerrero HAS TO finish out that 2nd round. Any prizefighter worth his salt would.
Adam (Rochester, MN)
Really enjoyed the fights tonight.. Kind of weird, if you would have told me the round stoppages before hand, I would have been turned off, but I really enjoyed it. I was always on and off with boxing about 10 years ago, but find myself really getting back into it. How close are we to the elusive boxing rejuvenation? I think very close...
Dan Rafael (1:33 AM)
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Justin
It looked like Guerrero was never in the fight to begin with and saw a way to take the easy way out.
Somewhere
Your thoughts on Ricardo Mayorga vs James Kirkland good blood and guts fight?
Dan Rafael (1:34 AM)
Kirkland would make Mayorga quit or he would run him out of the ring.
Dan Rafael (1:35 AM)
OK, Freaks, great RAD tonight. Good night of fights (even if they were short). Hope you enjoyed the fights and chat. Talk to you back at our usual time on Friday afternoon. Peace.
