Chuck (Milwaukee, WI)
Who do you see as the best wide receiver in the NFC EAST now that Owens is gone?
Matt Mosley (12:00 PM)
Chuck -- and everyone else -- welcome to today's chat. I've been looking forward to this since breakfast. Anyway, I'd have to go with Plax.
Bubba (Fort Collins Co)
Are the Cowboys in the market for another reciever? Torry Holt once he gets released? Are the Eagles in the market as well?
Matt Mosley (12:02 PM)
The Giants, Cowboys and Eagles could all use another receiver. The Redskins spent two second-round picks on receivers last year and they desperately need them to show up. I think the Cowboys think Miles Austin has a huge upside. But they may be looking at someone like Brian Robiskie in the second round. I think Torry Holt would be a nice addition, but none of these teams will pay big money for him.
Josh (Winston Salem, NC)
Dallas' number one draft need?
Matt Mosley (12:04 PM)
I think this team better start hitting on offensive linemen in the draft. They've missed on way too many guys dating back to 2003. Andre Gurode in 2002 is the last OL they hit on. Seriously. But receiver is right up there.
Nate NYC
Gmen stock piling DTs...who is the most expendable? likely to be involved in a trade?
Matt Mosley (12:05 PM)
Robbins got off to a quick start. He's 32, though. If you could land another draft pick (perhaps a fourth or fifth), that wouldn't be a bad trade.
Brad (Dover, DE)
With the 29th pick in the draft the New York Giants Pick????? And after that pick they pick?? in the second round with the Saints pick?
Matt Mosley (12:06 PM)
right now, I'm sensing a lot of interest in the Heyward-Bey kid.
Jermaine (Geneva , NY)
Who or what was to blame for the collapse of the Redskins in the Second have of the season?
Matt Mosley (12:07 PM)
The collapse of the O-line. You're going to get burned when you head into the season with aging starters such as Kendall, Randy Thomas and Jansen. I know Jansen was starting at first, but you know what I'm saying.
M (DC)
Redskins have big needs at LDE, SLB and RT. Which need will they fill with their pick 13?
Matt Mosley (12:07 PM)
pass rush, pass rush, pass rush
Jason (Bryn Mawr, PA)
Matt, whats with you media guys that all want to say TO is bad for the lockeroom, where's your proof?! Just kidding! I heard you on ESPN radio in Philly last night, great job, not sure what the host is thinking ...TO has said enough publicly for everyone to see his antics.
Matt Mosley (12:09 PM)
Thanks, Jason. In the radio business, that's we call an ambush. The guy (Missanelli?) obviously had a T.O. agenda -- and he was looking for an argument. Whatever. I like that station. I just prefer a head up when the host of the show is attempting to show someone up.
Chad (Las Vegas)
How will T.O. fare in a mediocre media market (say that 3 times fast)?
Matt Mosley (12:11 PM)
Chad, the man craves attention. But he'll be on his best behavior this season. I think the thing actually has a chance to work. At least the Bills are somewhat relevant again. But if things go south early (in terms of losing games), watch out. I think it would be funny to see him show up at his locker in the middle of the week and only have two or three guys waiting for him. In Dallas, there were always about 30 people lined up.
Nate NYC
Heward-Bey or Robieski? I really like the Robieski kid for the intangibles (like having dad as a pro-WR coach)
Matt Mosley (12:12 PM)
Nate, I love the Robiskie kid. But that's too high for him. He'll go somewhere in the 50s or 60s.
Al (Montreal)
Who is the ideal pass rusher that the Skins can grab at #13...
Matt Mosley (12:13 PM)
Al, I've watched Brian Orakpo the last couple years. Powerful man with the ability to terrify quarterbacks. I'd take him in a heartbeat.
Vince (DC)
So if it was the O-line that killed the Skins last year, why spend a hight draft pick on a pass rusher? Their defense was top 5 in the NFL. Thanks.
Matt Mosley (12:15 PM)
Vince, signing Derrick Dockery helps you because he upgrades one of those guard spots. You have a healthy Chris Samuels hopefully coming back at LT. No problems with Rabach up the middle. Do you really want to spend the No. 13 pick on a right tackle prospect? Good Times Vinny said Haynesworth makes everyone around him better. Why not put a talented young guy around him instead of Phillip Daniels and Co.
Kevin (Golden, CO)
Can Maualuga play SAM LB and would the Skins consider him to start at SAM right now and slide into the MLB spot when Fletcher is done?
Matt Mosley (12:17 PM)
This team is trying to generate a pass rush. They're not focused on the SAM. Maualauga won't end up in DC, although he's a tremendous prospect. You have MAC, Fletch and the Blade. You go find another talented guy later in the draft. You don't spend your No. 13 pick on a guy who might have three sacks at the most.
Yatin (LA)
Matt - please tell me the Eagles plan isn't to have the Andrews brothers each starting at one of the OT tackles. I know Tra was getting up there but the Birds really don't have a replacement for him.
Matt Mosley (12:19 PM)
I'm with you, Yatin. The thought of having Shawn at LT scares me. He missed most of the season at guard. So now that he's healthy (hopefully both mentally and physically), you can just put him out there on McNabb's blindside? Doesn't seem like a sound plan to me. I'd almost rather have Herremans out there. But you have two picks in the first round. Oher do anything for ya?
Nathan (NYC)
Matty, John Clayton suggested that a trade of Osi for Boldin? What are the chances this happens?
Matt Mosley (12:20 PM)
I don't see that happening at all.
Matt (Cornwall)
I really like Donald Brown, is there a chance the Giants go RB with one of their two second round picks??
Matt Mosley (12:21 PM)
The Giants like finding RBs late in the draft. Bradshaw was a seventh-rounder. And they have Ware to move into the thrid spot. So no, I don't think RB is a huge priority.
Matt (Hershey)
The Eagles are 40.5 under the cap and have 12 draft picks...what are they going to do in Free Agency and WHEN?
Matt Mosley (12:23 PM)
What, Stacy Andrews and Sean Jones didn't cut it for you? As the Packers have shown, you don't have to spend money in FA just because you have it. I don't think the Eagles will make a dramatic move unless something comes through with Boldin. But it's not like the Eagles are going to start unloading first, third and fifth round picks for the guy. That's what they would want. Something even better than what the Lions got for Roy Williams -- and that's saying something. Boldin's a more accomplished receiver than Williams -- in what may be my most obvious statement of the day.
Dave(Charlotte,NC)
Matt, I think the trade rumor was Kiwanuka for Boldin. Also there was a rumor of Braylon Edwards for Kiwanuka.
Matt Mosley (12:25 PM)
Browns would be insane to do Edwards for Kiwanuka. So maybe it happens this afternoon. And the Cardinals would never do that trade straight up. They'd also need the Giants' first-round pick -- and that's not happening.
Andrew (Austin)
Do the Giants still need a SLB after picking up Boley or do you still like Clark there?
Matt Mosley (12:26 PM)
They like their depth at LB right now. Blackburn, Kehl, Boley, Clark, Pierce. Some good competition in training camp never hurt anyone.
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
The NFC East as a whole seems pretty set at starting QBs, but pretty week at backup QBs. Which team has the best backup QB and who might be looking for another backup?
Matt Mosley (12:28 PM)
I don't think the NFC East is weak at backup quarterback at all. The Redskins have a backup in Collins who took them to the playoffs two seasons ago, the Giants have a former No. 1 overall pick who's still mobile and could help you in a pinch and the Cowboys have a guy in Jon Kitna who's rung up some impressive numbers. The Eagles are in fourth -- and I don't think Kevin Kolb's anyone to sneeze at. So no, I don't have a problem with the backups in the Beast.
MJ (Boston)
Matt - I think when Felix Jones gets healthy, he's going to open up Dallas's offense....The Boys Offense struggled when he went out. He's so important to that O, he's a big play waiting to happen.
Matt Mosley (12:30 PM)
Jason Garrett's future hinges on figuring out to deploy his stable of running backs. Everyone wants to focus on Roy Williams, but the Cowboys' playoff fortunes in 2009 will be determined by the backfield of Barber, Jones and Choice. And yes, Jones needs to touch the ball at least 12 times per game -- probably more.
Gregg (NY)
Other then drafting a WR in the first or second round, what do you think are the Giants' biggest needs to address? Any players you especially like?
Matt Mosley (12:33 PM)
I think they could use some depth at TE. Kevin Boss is a good player, but he could use a complementary piece. There's a guy from Rice (Casey) who would be a great pick in the second or third round. I also think the kid from Mizzou (Coffman) catches pretty much everything. He may be too much like Boss, though.
Rob (Laredo,TX)
Hey Mr. Mosley! Big fan. How do you feel about the Haynesworth signing, and why didnt they keep Jason Taylor atleast for the last year of his contract? He might have been pretty good paired with Haynesworth.
Matt Mosley (12:37 PM)
Rob: I think Haynesworth is one of the most dominating defensive tackles I've ever watched. He can absolutely take over football games. But I would only spend that type of money on a quarterback or a high sack total guy like Ware. The Redskins wanted to keep Taylor , but there was a disagreement over offseason workouts. I think the Redskins will regret the stance they took. They brought in the game's best DT and they're surrounding him with 36-year-old Phil Daniels and a 30-something Andre Carter. You have to do better than that.
Rob (Laredo, TX)
Hey Mr. Mosley. Whats your take on the Redskins Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas?
Matt Mosley (12:39 PM)
Thomas has tremendous speed and enormous potential. I think he has a questionable work ethic and that could bite him in the rear. Actually already has. Kelly was a excellent college receiver. But I fear that he might be the type player who's always in the training room. So far, we've found out zip about these guys. Same goes for the TE. last year's draft looks pretty bad -- based on the evidence we've seen to this point.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
Am I wrong to be furious at the fact that Andy Reid has not yet commented publicly about Dawkins and now Thomas leaving town? Seeing Banner making the public comments leads me to believe that the money-men have more of a say in the org than the football people.
Matt Mosley (12:39 PM)
No, I saw quotes from Andy
Andrew (Austin, TX)
Matt - What is your take on Sinorice Moss, Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham if the Giants don't add to that list?
Matt Mosley (12:42 PM)
Steve Smith's a solid No. 2. Reliable third-down receiver for Eli, but he's not going to wow you with his play-making ability. Hixon has great top-end speed and could emerge as a really nice threat as a No. 3. He's not a worthy replacement for Plax, though. I don't have much to go on with Moss and Manningham. Moss is a little guy who will cling to the roster for a couple of years. Manningham has some talent, but it's too early to tell if he'll amount to anything -- as a player. So no, there's not a No. 1 in the bunch. This team needs Plax or someone like Boldin to take his place.
Phil S. (NJ)
The NFL Beast blog is a must for decreasing my productivity at work. What players may unexpectedly drop to the Giants' low first round pick? Any chance at one of the big-time LBs? Do you think Clay Matthews is the real deal?
Matt Mosley (12:44 PM)
Thanks, Phil! We'll have to see which receiver is available at that point. Hicks or Heyward-Bey may show up down there. I like Clay Matthews. Great pedigree. But the Giants already have too many guys sort of like him in Blackburn, Kehl, etc.
Derek (Syracuse, NY)
Matt who do you think the giants best standout player is going to be this season.....Phillips has always shown me flashes of the late sean taylor and I saw bradshaw tear the bills for a HUGE run in person at ralph wilson stadium and he is currently in jail doing push ups also Osi is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!
Matt Mosley (12:45 PM)
This is the year Tuck breaks through for 16 or 17 sacks. Trust me.
VK (DC)
Vinny Cerrato said, and I'm not joking, that the Redskins draft last year turned out pretty much the way they hoped it would. So, apparently Vinny was trying to get useless players? Wow.
Matt Mosley (12:46 PM)
Yeah, they must've had some pretty low expectations. I guess we do have to give them credit for Horton in the seventh, though.
Zac (MN)
Going into the offseason, I thought the Eagles were a good offseason away from being Super bowl favorites. They just needed to resign Dawkins and maybe Tra Thomas, sign Housh, and utilize their 2 first rounders. But they seem to have gotten worse. Why not put some emphasis on getting better, or do you feel they have?
Matt Mosley (12:48 PM)
Well, let's see how they do in the draft before we simply dismiss them. Are we forgetting that DeSean Jackson actually came up big down the stretch? I thought he had a nice rookie season that bordered on sensational at times. Why overpay an aging wide receiver when you have a youngster like Jackson. And Avant is getting better as a clutch third-down receiver. Let's see what they do in the draft before we completely shoot down their offseason.
MJ (Boston)
Matt - who's the best defensive player in the NFL?
Matt Mosley (12:49 PM)
based on last season, I'd go 1. James Harrison 2. DeMarcus Ware 3. Al Haynesworth 4. Justin Tuck 5. Ed Reed And I'm not biased toward the Beast at all!!!
Scott (DC)
Is Chad Rinehart expected to start at RT for the Skins? They were high on him last year.
Matt Mosley (12:50 PM)
Rinehart's not ready for prime time -- and that comes from his O-line coach
Marc (Malden, MA)
Why the heck did Washington give Deangelo Hall $56m?
Matt Mosley (12:51 PM)
He won't see all of that money. The guaranteed portion is $22.5 million.
Josh (Philly)
To be fair, Matt, I'm not sure Misanelli has a pro-TO agenda...just a "everything that happens (including the recession) is the fault of the Eagles' front office" agenda. That said, can you elaborate a little bit on John Clayton hinting that the Eagles might be trying to put together a trade package for Jason Peters? I hadn't heard that the Bills were shopping him.
Matt Mosley (12:54 PM)
Leave fairness out of this, Josh! (kidding). Peters and the Bills haven't been on firm ground for some time now. He's one of the best left tackles in the game, but the two sides have had a prickly relationship. That would be huge for the Eagles to land Peters. But they'd certainly have to give up one of those first rounders and perhaps a third. I'll ask Clayton about that one of these days.
Morris (Columbus, OH)
I haven't heard/read anything regarding Greg Ellis. Are the 'Boys planning on bringing him back next season? It's time to see what Anthony Spencer can do as a starter.
Matt Mosley (12:56 PM)
Spencer's already the starter -- and he's certainly not blowing anyone away. Ellis will hold his annual whine festival and then move on. He's a really good guy, but all his offseason griping hasn't helped his reputation as a locker-room leader.
Matt (Chicago)
You think Pacman Jones will ever play in the NFL again?
Matt Mosley (12:56 PM)
sure
Jake (VA Beach)
Nothing would make me happier to see Tuck get 16-17 sacks (well another SB win)...but, what makes you think he can even with that huge depth and rotation on the line?
Matt Mosley (12:57 PM)
With Umenyiora on the other side and Canty and Bernard in the middle, teams can't focus on him as much. He was having to carry a huge load last season. He was banged up pretty bad late in the season. He'll look much more like he did when Strahan was around now that Osi's bac. And Kiwi will help, too.
Todd ( Dallas)
I agree with Morris. Why are the Cowboys so reluctant to replace their older players with their draft picks -- Spencer, Carpenter, Free.
Matt Mosley (12:59 PM)
Todd: Maybe it's because they're busting on picks. You think Brooking would be here if Carpenter could play? Spencer's in the lineup now. It's just hard to tell because he's not doing much. And would like to see Free replace Flo? They haven't drafted well along the O-line. It has nothing to do with reluctance to play the kids.
Chip (NYC, NY)
It is scary to see the depth at d-line and LB for the Giants...do you think they can get back to '07 form and be an even more dominant D down the stretch?
Matt Mosley (1:01 PM)
The Giants were hamstrung last December and January by a worn down D-line and a missing WR. They won't let it happen again. The Giants are my early favorites to be in the Bowl.
Mike(DC)
Hey Matt. Whats your take on jason Cambell?
Matt Mosley (1:05 PM)
I know the guy pretty well. Outstanding human being who was on the verge of becoming a Pro Bowler at one point last season. But he broke down when the O-line and running game broke down. I hate that the Redskins aren't showing any confidence in Campbell right now. They should offer him a long-term deal. He's the type of guy you should commit to. But the Redskins would rather throw money at players from other teams. If the Redskins can upgrade this O-line, Campbell has a chance to have a special season in '09. Folks, my time is up. You've been wonderful.
Brian (NJ)
If you were Reece would you do Kiwanuka and a 3nd rounder for Braylon Edwards?
Matt Mosley (1:05 PM)
sure, but the Browns wouldn't do that.
Chad (Las Vegas)
Better conference NFC East or NFC South?
Matt Mosley (1:05 PM)
East
Mike (Dallas)
Heck no we don't want Free replacing Flozell, but I would have like to see him replace Columbo. The point is Dallas is unwilling to give them a try.
Matt Mosley (1:07 PM)
these answers are like the closing credits to an academy award-winning film...Mike, you just locked up Colombo in a long-term deal. He's an absolute mauler. You want to replace him with a guy we know virtually nothing about. The Cows have busted on a bunch of offensive linemen. You just have to deal with it. If I didn't get to your question, please utilize the "Mosley's Mailbag" section. All my best to Kim Mulkey.
