Bill Williamson (4:01 PM)
Hey, everyone let's get started.
Hey Bill, great blog. Last chat we agreed that the only way Cutler leaves is if he sits out. Now, Jay has said he'll sit out voluntary workouts, but will attend all mandatory ones. therefore, he's technically not sitting out. My question is, do you still agree with what u said in your previous chat, and that Cutler will only leave if he sits out?
Bill Williamson (4:03 PM)
Let's not waste any time and tackle the story everyone is talking about ... Well, he is missing team functions so he is sitting out and he has asked to be dealt so it has gone to the next level. It got worse since last week, that's for sure.
Ben (Kansas City)
Hey BW love the blogs, read em everyday. Here's my question: With the broncos having problems with cutler and the moves the chiefs have made, any chances you think they sneak up on some people and steal the division?
Bill Williamson (4:05 PM)
I could see the Chiefs getting better but they have to address issues on defense and they are a long way from catching the Chargers.
Bill, great stuff. But I say, let him go! I want to see Quinn in a Bronco uniform.
Bill Williamson (4:06 PM)
If you get Quinn for Cutler you getter get at least another first rounder in exchange. Cutler is proven. Quinn is not.
Scott, Newark De
Bill my man, why would you ever leave the Packers to cover the Broncos?
Bill Williamson (4:07 PM)
Think green, Scott.
Bill (Virginia Beach)
Any word on the chiefs signing Matt Cassel to a long term deal. And since K.C. is switching to a 3-4 defense what are the chances they go after J. Peppers.
Bill Williamson (4:09 PM)
Not yet, Bill. That will be likely be addressed before the season. No word yet on the 3-4 but I think that will be the case.
Mike (Camarillo, CA)
Leinert to Denver in a three-team deal? Possible or Never happen?
Bill Williamson (4:11 PM)
Possibile, Mike, possibile. If Denver is going to trade Cutler and get a replacement it will likley be in a three-way deal.
bill. isnt this something? i sure am enjoying my time off. im drooling over my guy jay going to either the 49ers, vikings, bears, or bills so i can reunite with him in 2010. you think we can pull this off?!
Bill Williamson (4:12 PM)
How bout in Washington, coach?
Mike (San Diego)
Chargers 1st round pick: RB, DB, or LB?
Bill Williamson (4:12 PM)
Maybe a DL.
Jordan (San Pedro, CA)
Who is the most underated player in the AFC West
Bill Williamson (4:13 PM)
I like Zach Miller, the Oakland tight end and and on defense, Eric Weddle, the safety in San Diego.
I love Jay, but is this the worst thing in the world? McD has proved that he can work any QB from the ground up. And Chris Simms has actually showed some potential for a good NFL career in '06, whereas Cassell never started in college. Do you think McD can make Simms like he made Cassel?
Bill Williamson (4:14 PM)
If McDaniels is stuck with Simms. He better make him good or his stay in Denver will be very short.
So what do you see being the final word on Peppers? The report about the Pats had said they were trading for the 34th pick, I just didn't think that was enough.
Bill Williamson (4:15 PM)
I'm with you, Clay. I'd think it would take a first rounder to pry Peppers from Carolina.
Here's scenario, Cutler goes to the bills, they trade to get gonzalez. top 3 offense in league? why not
PT (Franklin, NC)
Now that the Raiders have signed Khalif Barnes do you think it's all but a lock that if Crabtree falls to them they will jump all over him, or do you see a possible trade down scenario in which case they could take Alex Mack with one of the picks they acquire?
Bill Williamson (4:18 PM)
I'm not sure of a lock, but I do think Crabtree is the guy they are leaning to at No. 7.
Rob (Portland, OR)
If Denver trades Cutler, wouldn't they almost HAVE to draft a QB in this year's draft? Wouldn't that make the Lions (and their #1 pick) the most attractive trading partner for Cutler?
Bill Williamson (4:19 PM)
Unless they got someone like Quinn or Leinart in return.
What player do you think will have a breakout year in the AFC West next year?
Bill Williamson (4:20 PM)
I like Oakland defensive end Tevor Scott. He showed a nice pass-rushing burst as a rookie last season.
Tim (San DIego)
Bill, I know this isn't an AFC West question really, even though Drew BREES used to be a Charger, but have you heard anything about Brees to the Vikings? I heard a rumor about that somewhere.
Bill Williamson (4:21 PM)
I don't think there are any legs to that one.
31st run defense, Oakland CA
What is the best way for the Raiders to improve their 31st ranked run defense?
Bill Williamson (4:22 PM)
Get more production out of their defensive tackles.
Chris (Cottage Grove, MN)
My home town Vikings are always making me want to rip my hair out. They have the defense to go far and the running game. I am wondering if they should trade up for sanchez to get a Franchise QB, I think it would be smart. What do you think Bill?
Bill Williamson (4:24 PM)
Well, they are going to give Sage the chance. If he can become solid, the Vikings hav a chance to go far.
pat (rocky mountains)
Who is going to run the ball for the broncos this year?! What's the point of having 7 rbs if they are all mediocre at best?
Bill Williamson (4:27 PM)
Expect the three vets McDaniels signed to get the first crack. I think we've learned already that McDaniels will do what he chooses and if signed new running backs, he'll use those players over the Broncos' returning cast.
The Denver Post said that the Broncos: "The Broncos and McDaniels have let things cool off so far this week, waiting to see if Cutler approaches them to try to work out their disagreements. If not, they are expected to listen to offers, which are already coming in from around the NFL as teams try to see what it would take to get a young Pro Bowl quarterback." Do you agree? Because I would think the Broncos would try to contact him again and see if they can work this out, instead of seeing if he will contact them.
Bill Williamson (4:28 PM)
I've heard Denver isn't picking up the phone yet but they will talk trade if they can't get Cutler back to the team soon.
Is there any chance at all the Packers get in on Julius Peppers?
Bill Williamson (4:29 PM)
That would be out of character for the Packers but he'd be a big help.
Thom (Battle Creek, MI)
It seems the new regime in Detroit is making some pretty good decisions. Is it too early for a Lions fan to get excited because I like what they're doing?
Bill Williamson (4:30 PM)
You were 0-16. It's never too early to get excited. Remember, it can't get worse.
Buck (Bay Area)
BW...You're killing us with all the Cutler stuff - seriously, you can try to prove other people care about it, but outside of the square state of Colorado, nobody cares at all. Period. How about giving us some sense of what you're hearing about the Raiders draft...that is if you can pull yourself away from the buffet line.
Bill Williamson (4:34 PM)
Ok, Buck I'm doing too much Cutler or am I stuck at the buffet table? You pick, big fella. Look, the Cutler story is the biggest sotry in the NFL right now. It has to be covered. You have a Raider question? I'll answer it.
If Cutler leaves, who gets more of the blame, McD or Xanders? McD was going after his own guy, but this is Xanders depatment.
Bill Williamson (4:35 PM)
McDaniels all the way. Cassel was his guy. Not Xanders' guy.
What about a three team trade between Den, Cle, and Min. The Vikes get Cutler, Broncos get Quinn and Chester Taylor, and the browns get draft picks?
Bill Williamson (4:36 PM)
That could be a fun one.
Do the packers automatically go for a DE with the #9 pick or do they roll the dice on someone like Andre Smith? (I am still very leary about o-lineman after Tony Man I'm Rich!)
Bill Williamson (4:37 PM)
I thinka DE or Raji, if he is somehow still there, is the choice. The Packers have too many needs on defense to gamble on Smith.
Do you all not remember Favres retirement and unretirement and trade me stuff from last year and how much headlines that got for a one year deal. This is totally different considering its same stuff but with a young talented QB that can immediately help a team. So dont tell me that no one cares about this stuff outside Colorado look at all the headlines all over the nation.
Bill Williamson (4:39 PM)
Look, I know people can get tired of a subject. But it is a very real story and it will be covered until the end, Plus, many teams around the league are interested because Cutler could make them much better. Thanks for getting it, Chris.
Mike (San Diego)
B-Dub, any word on what's going to happen to Vincent Jackson? I'm guessing AJ isn't too fond of his drinking binges.
Bill Williamson (4:41 PM)
He could face a short suspension but I suspect he will be there for the Chargers in 2009.
With his unusual skill set, won't Andre Smith get drafted in the top 10 anyway?
Bill Williamson (4:43 PM)
Yes, he is skilled but he is really hiring himself with the workotus, interviews and the like.
Also Bill I was wondering what has happened with Brandon Marshall i was out of the loop for a while dont know if he met with the Goodell or suspended allready or what.....
Bill Williamson (4:45 PM)
There have been no reported meetings between Marshall and Goodell. They wll likley chat soemtime, I'd think.
This whole chat was for the whole purpose of addressing Cutler, so quit beating around the bush. So now I ask you: Does Cutler leave or stay?
Bill Williamson (4:48 PM)
Turth be told, Ryan, it is our weekly AFC West chat but Cutler naturally was expected to be a big part of it. Anyway, my gut feeling? He is gone. I didn't think so until the other day. But both sides are very set in their ways and I think there is a lot of interest in Cutler. At this point, I see him being dealt. But, that could change.
Robert (Latrobe, PA)
When will Tommy Kelly become the last casualty of Al Davis' mad spending spree from last year?
Bill Williamson (4:48 PM)
Probably next winter if he doesn't have a big season.
Don't you think it is about time for Pat Bowlen to step in and do something about this mess? What about his new hands on approach? For him to come out and publicly support his new coach was great, but for him to lay the blame on Cutler was not the brightest thing he could have done.
Bill Williamson (4:49 PM)
I shocked that he admitted the team may lose Cutler.
Travis, Denver Co
Whould Cutler and 12 for Quinn and 5 work? Sounds too simple, am I under/over valuing Jay?
Bill Williamson (4:51 PM)
Yeah, Travis, I think you may be undervaluing Cutler on this one.
marcus(sj,ca) [via mobile]
only way i see cutler staying is a new contract. so how much would it be worth??
Bill Williamson (4:52 PM)
I think that would be a good start.
what is the knock on chris simms? what is his ultimate weakness?
Bill Williamson (4:53 PM)
Sam (Alexandria, VA)
Does the fact that the Broncos were apparently willing to trade Cutler straight up for Cassel, who the Chiefs then got for an early second rounder, decrease the leverage the Broncos would have in a trade? Everyone is saying multiple picks including a first rounder for Cutler, but they were willing to take what most people consider less than that before, and now Cutler wants out. It seems like the Broncos would have a hard time getting that kind of value in a trade.
Bill Williamson (4:55 PM)
Note: Folks, i'm getting nothing but Cutler questions right now so if you want to change the subject send me something different. If not we'll stay on the Cutler train, which clealry is interesting enough people ... Good point, but perhaps McDaniels will learn from his first mistake.
Danny (colorado springs)
any chance the chargers lock up there almost freeagent vets....(RIVERS, GATES, MERRIMAN, JACKSON, McNiel) before the season starts? what doyou think about the chargers trading down picking up that gaurd from LSU in the 2nd and gettin another 3rd??
Bill Williamson (4:57 PM)
I think San Diego is trying to get Rivers and gates done. As for Merriman, Jackson and McNeill, I think the team wants to see how they all play in 2009 before committing long term.
Robert (Latrobe, PA)
How short of a least is Norv Turner on?
Bill Williamson (4:58 PM)
If the Chargers lose in what should be another weak year in the AFC west, he'll likley be gone.
BK (LA, CA)
Do we know what compensatory picks the Bolts will pick up for Florence and Turner in the draft this year?
Bill Williamson (4:58 PM)
We'll find out as soon as Monday.
i guess my point is that we forget McD is from New England. they think they can win with anybody (which they can) so is it a shock that the front office doesn't seem to be in panic mode and that cutler might be overplaying his hand?
Bill Williamson (5:00 PM)
Yes, true. McDaniels values system over talent. No doubt about it.
Will Merriman be ready to go from the start of training camp? Any update on his rehab?
Bill Williamson (5:01 PM)
I talked to him in January and he felt great. I expect him to be full go by training camp.
Bill Williamson (5:02 PM)
Great hour, folks. Good times as usual. Talk to you next week. By the way, it will be Friday next week because I will be traveling on Thursdays (my usual chat day) from the NFL owners meeting.
