We've got Mel!
Mel Kiper (1:02 PM)
We've got a lot to talk about. We're nearing the end of individual workouts. Most of the projections and analysis and ratings are final.
Hey Mel....a lot of speculation on the Bears going WR or OT in the first. If Sanchez was to fall to the 18 pick would the Bears select him or would they ride it out with Orton?
Mel Kiper (1:03 PM)
I would take Mark Sanchez in a heart beat. It would take two seconds to get that card up. He's the fifth best player in the draft. If you can get the fifth best player at 18, you can do cartwheels. You're not going to play him as a rookie, so Kyle Orton would become the bridge to Mark Sanchez. In terms of Chicago, that would be an indeal scenario if he falls.
Phil Delaware [via mobile]
What round do you see Phil Loadholt getting drafted? Go sooners
Mel Kiper (1:04 PM)
Loadholt's a LT in college who will be a RT in the NFL. He doesn't have the feet to be a LT. He's an imposing physical speciman. He's 6-7, 335 pounds. As a RT, he has definite value. I think he's a solid second round draft choice.
Keith (St.Charles, IL)
Does Vontae Davis' solid pro day numbers take away the possibility of him falling to Miami at #25?
Mel Kiper (1:05 PM)
I factored that in. There was no surprised that he had a great workout. That's his specialty. His main prowess is his physical abilities. But his performance on the field isn't what you'd expect from his skillset. He needs to learn to maximize his potential on a week to week basis. I factored in the good workouts.
Mindy: (Wilsonville, OR)
Mel, what kind of prospect is Oregon's LaGarrette Blount?
Mel Kiper (1:06 PM)
Real good prospect. He's a very good prospect. He's a big back who had some huge runs for Oregon. Did a good job of complementing Jeremiah Johnson. I have CJ Spiller as the top junior RB right now. James Starks then I have Blount No. 3. Charles Scott and Chris Brown round out the top 5.
Do you think the Eagles should take Donald Brown in the first round or is that too high for him?
Mel Kiper (1:08 PM)
That's not too high. At 21 or if they're fortunate to see him at 28, he would be a good complement for Brian Westbrook. He's a phenomenal athlete. Gifted athlete. Excellent hands out of the backfield and he has good character. All of the things Andy Reid would want out of a back. There's not much of a difference between him and Moreno. Brown is faster than Moreno and a better athlete.
Brian Inkster MI
What Michigan football player could be the steal of the draft?
Mel Kiper (1:09 PM)
There's a chance for the Terrance Taylor, in the right defensive scheme, he could be. Morgan Trent has a chance. Athletically, he has catch up speed. Carson Butler, the TE would have some value as a blocking TE. He actually moved to DE this year, as Michigan phased out the TE.
Darren (Chicago,IL) [via mobile]
Mel, please tell me why the Bears are not doing everything in their power to get Jay Cutler?
Mel Kiper (1:13 PM)
Well, everybody in the NFL wasn't sky high on Cutler when he came out. I thought he would be a good QB when he came out, not great. And he's not great right now. He's a good QB. I don't think he was overhyped at Vanderbilt, but during the draft process he was. He's been a good QB. I said in my reports that he would be a good QB in the NFL. Right now, the jury is still out on that. It depends on how you felt when he came out, as to how you feel now. I personally think he could have handled this Broncos soap opera. I'll say this in defense of Cutler, if you're Denver, I could see how they wanted to trade for Matt Cassell. But once that doesn't happen, I don't think you can upgrade the position in any way. So, you keep him. He's under contract. This should have been worked out a long time ago. They should have met behind closed doors immediately. Keep both parties in the same room. Nothing leaked out to the media. Either you're moving on with Jay Cutler or you're not.
Mel Kiper (1:13 PM)
You can't let this thing fester and let it become what it's become.
do you think max unger will go in the first round
Mel Kiper (1:14 PM)
No. I think he could, but I don't think he does. There are some that think he's a first round caliber player, but he's a center. I don't think you take a center in the first round. You can find one in the late rounds or an undrafted free agent. I think there will be three second round centers. I think Wood, Unger and Mack all go in the second round.
Josh McDaniels (Denver)
Tell Darren in Chicago, there's no point in going after Cutler. He's not going anywhere. I finally wised up and realized that without him, I have no chance to win, and after this debacle, I'll be fired in two years without winning.
Greg (Boca Raton)
Hey Mel, Can I get your thoughts on Frantz Joesph from FAU? Will he be the 1st Owl ever drafted? If so, what round? Thanks!
Mel Kiper (1:15 PM)
Yeah, I think he will be a draftable player. I think he could end up going in that 6-7 round area. He's got some ability. A back up type. Could help you on special teams.
Is there any chance the Patriots decide to go with a cornerback in the first round? If not how soon will they draft one?
Mel Kiper (1:16 PM)
Well, with the picks that they have, they have an opportunity to address a lot of positions. I think there will be a great third round pick for somebody in DJ Moore from Vanderbilt. He could help out on special teams. He's a good CB. There will be a lot of DBs dispersed throughout this draft.
I read that S.Greene had an excellent pro-day. Can you confirm this? thanks.
Mel Kiper (1:19 PM)
I don't know of many players that don't have great individual workouts. If you can't do well in an individual workouts there's something wrong. They should have good workouts. Maybin doesn't run well at the combine, runs well at their individual. 90% of the guys will run better at their individual workout. Greene, even after the combine where he ran in the 4.6s, people still thought he was a second round pick. He was a big time back in a big time conference. If you worried about speed, you wouldn't have picked Emmitt Smith high. Greene ran very similar times at the combine as Moreno. Greene ran 4.65 and Moreno ran 4.6. Not much of a difference.
Mel, can you talk about Ramses Barden, can he be a plaxico type and what round do you see him going in. Thanks
Mel Kiper (1:20 PM)
Burress came out of Michigan State. Barden's coming out of Cal Poly. He had a good workout and Cal Poly. He has good strength. He's 6-6, 225-230. He has good straight line speed. He needs to be quicker out of his break. He's a third round draft choice.
Greg (St. Louis)
Is Hakeem Nicks' weight gain cause for concern?
Mel Kiper (1:22 PM)
For some people it may. I talked to one person in particular say that it's a red flag. Someone at UNC said he had a tweak of the hamstring and tha'ts why he hasn't been able to work out and put on some weight. He went from 212 to 226. So he put on 14 pounds from the combine. He's not a fast guy, so if you put on weight all of a sudden, you're not getting open. Hopefully he can get the weight down. I think he could be a first round pick. He could go to Minnesota, Giants, Tennessee, Baltimore.
Sam (Lake Bluff)
Who is the safest pick in the entire draft that has almost no question marks about his play or his character?
Mel Kiper (1:24 PM)
Normally, it's the No. 1 player on your board, normally. And that's Aaron Curry. He prides himself on making players around him better. He's unselfish. Team oriented. Likes taking the leadership role. He's not a 3-4 OLB, he's a 4-3 OLB. He's not the edge pass rushing combo LB. He's not that type of player. But he's a safe pick for a team that's trying to maximize his value. BJ Raji is a guy that should also have a good career.
Mel Kiper (1:25 PM)
I think Brandon Pettigrew is going to be an outstanding TE in the NFL. Maybin and Orakpo will be good in the NFL as pass rushers. Jason Smith as an OT. He'll be a great pass blocker. Great kid.
Hey mel.. I've heard alot of the dolphins looking at a cornerback or wide receiver in the first round at pick 25. If a linebacker like brian cushing or even his teammate rey maulaga fall the far, would the dolphins hesitate to pick either of them?
Mel Kiper (1:28 PM)
It could. Also Clay Matthews. Good bloodlines with his father and brother. Cushing because of his versatility. But I also think they need a WR. This offense needs some juice. They need a WR. They also need a CB, but the bigger need is WR. I think Pennington might give way to Chad Henne at some point this season, so you need to get Henne some weapons around him. Ted Ginn has not emerged as a big time weapon yet.
Mark (Boston, Ma)
Ok, so where is Pat White going? When and What position? Reinvent the Wildcat?
Mel Kiper (1:29 PM)
I still hold to what I said two months ago. I say he goes late second, early third. I think he sees 7-10 snaps a game at QB. He can run and he can throw. He's over 6 feet tall. He will be a headache for teams to prepare for. He's not the typical wildcat QB - he's not a WR or RB that you put in there to play QB.
Joe (Indianapolis, IN)
The Colts have been at least 12-4 in each of the past 6 seasons. Is always having a late first round pick detrimental in the long run?
Mel Kiper (1:31 PM)
I made a point today on a conference call today with a bunch of reporters that if I were a GM, I would trade out of the first round. I think you can build a team with second round picks. You can get players down the line that have value. I'd rather have two 2's than one 1. Look where the Colts got Reggie Wayne, Addai. Late first round. This team has key entities in the offense that were late first round. This team doesn't miss in the draft. Bill Polian deserves a lot of credit.
Mel Kiper (1:33 PM)
He's one of the best, if not the best GM this game has ever seen.
Paul (Boise, ID)
I need some Seahawk talk, Mel. Nobody seems to care to talk about them. They pick at four. If Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe are gone, who do they pick?
Mel Kiper (1:34 PM)
I don't think that's going to happen. I can't see both of those OTs being gone. If they're gone, does that mean Matthew Stafford is still there? That means you pick Stafford. If both of those guys are gone, who's sliding? Most likely Stafford. That's the way I would go. If he falls into their laps, Seattle almost has to take them.
Nayar,Eagan,Mn [via mobile]
Who is the most athletic prospect in this year's draft?
Mel Kiper (1:38 PM)
Here's a group of guys that are the best athletes: Darius Butler, CB, UConn. Athletically for the DLs, BJ Raji would be in that category. Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland. Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech. Connor Barwin, DE/OLB/TE, Cincinnati. Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina. Mike Wallace, WR, Ole Miss. CJ Spillman, S, Marshall. Donald Washington, CB, Ohio State.
Chad (Las Vegas)
The Saints have met a lot of their needs via FA. Shouldn't they trade the 14th pick to say the NYG so they can get Harvin and the Saints get an extra pick or 2?
Mel Kiper (1:40 PM)
You could always think about moving down. But you have to think about a guy like Moreno, would he be worth the 14th pick? They could still look for a DB. They have options now. And I think one option is taking another RB to help Thomas and Bush. Bush is a jack of all trades, so if you can get some help, it would give them depth and combinations of RB.
If Crabtree falls to number 7 or 8 do you see the Jets possibly trading up to get him. I think they need a big body type reciever with the home run ability. If you look at the entire team besides QB and WR we are in pretty goof shape to compete at a high level. Crabtree would give whoever the QB is gonna be a great target and he might be a Larry Fitzgerald type player?
Mel Kiper (1:42 PM)
The Jets definitely need a WR. Percy Harvin if he's there. But that's a pretty big jump to get him. And why would a team at 6-7 moved down if Crabtree's on the board? I don't see why you would let him go to someone else if you need him.
Dan Sac,Ca [via mobile]
Hey mel do u think andre smith will still b there for sf at 10? If not where do u see they going?
Mel Kiper (1:42 PM)
Yes, I do. I think he will draw some consideration. If he's there at 13, I think the Redskins will consider him. I don't think he gets by 13.
Chad Miller [via mobile]
Where will Iglasias from Oklahoma go
Mel Kiper (1:43 PM)
Good player. He's not elite. He will run in the 4.5 range on a consistent basis. He was good on the crossing routes in his career. He's at worst a third rounder. I would say second round.
Do the Steelers take an OL, CB, or WR on the first day of the draft?
Mel Kiper (1:44 PM)
Well, I think OT, CB and WR are three areas they could address. I see them taking Darius Butler from UConn. They could look at WR, a Kenny Britt, Hakeem Nicks.
Am I naive to think the Packers should just take the best player available at 9? Outside of the top 5 picks (and maybe Jackson) it doesn't seem like the Packers are going to get anyone who can fill their needs immediately anyway.
Mel Kiper (1:46 PM)
They have a need at pass rusher. If Maybin or Orakpo are there, they would look at those guys. I think it could fall for them. Andre Smith is another guy they could very seriously consider at that point.
Hi Mel, is Brian Robiskie the next Reggie Wayne? If not who does he compare to?
Mel Kiper (1:48 PM)
I like Robiskie. I thought Wayne was a better player at Miami then Robiskie was at OSU. I'm not going to make that comparison. I remember Wayne had a great Senior Bowl week. I remember being there in Mobile. Robiskie's a good player. He ran better then people thought he would. He's a good second round pick. He's been around football his whole life. I don't think he'll go much lower then Wayne did, but I don't think he'll have the same NFL career. That's not meaning that Robiskie won't be a good player.
Thomas (Pittsburg, KS)
Do you see the rams taking anything but an OT? Or are they dead set at taking a OT no matter what?
Mel Kiper (1:50 PM)
It seems that way. It seems that Jason Smith would be the guy that you would take. He has an engaging personality. He's actually coming on the radio with me tonight and the radio Jason Smith tonight on Overnight. We had the football Jason Smith on the weekend radio show and I said, why don't you come on with the radio Jason Smith and he said he would. So we've got him on tonight. He's not just a one-dimensional player. He can drive the defenders off the ball and finish blocks. I think he will be a safe pick at the LT position. The Rams add Chris Long last year and now Jason Smith.
Dan - San Jose
Which of the "second-tier" tackles projects as a potential LT in the NFL? Britton? Beatty? Anyone else athletic enough?
Mel Kiper (1:53 PM)
Britton would be the main guy. He's a former RT turned LT. He's played both. He's 6-6, 310. Decent strength. Decent football player. Beatty, 6-6, 310, good upper body strength. Great athlete. More of a finesse player. I think Beatty is a two and Britton is a late 1. Those are the next two highest rated guys. Xavier Fulton is a developmental LT prospect. Phil Loadholt played LT at Oklahoma, but he'll be a RT in the NFL. Jamon Meredith is a good LT, but some people are looking at him as a guard.
Paul (New Orleans)
Mel, I heard DE Tyson Jackson stock is on the rise. What do you think about Jackson, and how high could he possibly go?
Mel Kiper (1:54 PM)
He's projected to go, I had him at 12 to Denver. That's pretty high for a guy that's not a good pass rusher. He plays the run. He holds up the point. He's best suited for a 3-4 end. He can take on the double team.
Is building through the draft the best plan for the falcons? They can win now if they make some trades and sign some quailty free agents.
Mel Kiper (1:56 PM)
You look at the Falcons and last year, with Matt Ryan and what he did. They used a combination of ways. They signed Michael Turner. They drafted Matt Ryan and Sam Baker. They drafted Jamal Anderson, and he's not developed how they'd like. Where they're picking, they could look at a TE like Pettigrew, a DE like Johnson, a safety like Delmas. They have a chance with that pick to have some interesting possibilities.
let's say the first 5 or 6 picks go by without a QB being taken. how far might stafford and sanchez fall?
Mel Kiper (1:57 PM)
If no QB goes to Detroit or Seattle, then you're talking about Jacksonville at 8, SF at 10, Denver at 12, depending on what happens to Cutler, Houston at 15, Jets at 17, Chicago at 18 and Tampa at 19.
Kenny (Houston, TX)
Where do you see Austin Collie (BYU) going in the draft. He led the nation in several categories but I haven't heard much about him?
Mel Kiper (1:58 PM)
He's done a nice job through this process. He's 6-1 right around 200 pounds. Pretty good athlete. He's about a 4.55 guy. Outstanding hands. Good productivity. I think he has a role. He could be a 3-4 round guy. Some people would think 4-6. In the right offense, I say 3-4, depending on if a team targets him.
Mel Kiper (2:00 PM)
Another productive day. We will be inside of a month next week. Unfortunately, the biggest fool won't be around next Wednesday for April Fool's, because I'll be traveling. So we'll do the chat on Friday instead.
