Hi folks. I'm in Portland today, after watching Blazers-Suns last night. The Portland folks were giddy after that one. Great victory for them, and another nail in the Phoenix coffin. Suns now have to win in Utah Saturday. Tall order.
Do you think PHX is regretting giving Rudy Fernandez to the Blazers for just $3 million? What an end to the third quarter!
J.A. Adande (3:05 PM)
Yes, i heard some grumbling about that cash grab from Suns folks last night. What team wouldn't want Rudy? True story: I turned to a writer next to me and said Suns shouldn't think about playoffs if they're giving up 95 points through three quarters. He said, "The quarter's not over yet." Right afterward, Rudy gets a bucket, there's a steal, he hits a 3, --- make that 100 points in three quarters. I stand corrected

Dont you think its best to at least make it to the playoffs this year? Since the draft is not expected to be that great after the the top 5. Or do you still tank it if your still in the race as bucks, bulls, pistons, and bobcats 2 of the 4 are in but could be out with losses.
J.A. Adande (3:08 PM)
Of all years, this would be a good year to push to get in the 8th spot, even if it means a certain sweep. Your young players get a taste of the playoffs, so they'll know what to expect next time. You'll get a couple of home playoff games, which are extra lucrative because you get the gate and virtually none of it goes toward player salaries. That's the time teams really cash in. Also, the higher your draft pick, the more you have to pay the player under the rookie scale.
What are you hearing about the Kings possibly moving to Anaheim?
J.A. Adande (3:11 PM)
One of the big deterrents to any other team moving to the Honda Center in Anaheim (formerly the Pond) is the arena gets to keep so much of the revenues it wouldn't be worth it for a team to come there. that would have to change. But I do think the league wants to keep the Kings in Sacramento, unlike the way Stern gassed up the moving vans for the exodus from Seattle
mike newark ohio [via mobile]
what do you think about the cavs thinking about bringing big ben off the bench, and you dont buy boston doesnt care about home court do you?
J.A. Adande (3:14 PM)
Don't see anything wrong with bringing Ben off the bench. And as much as the Celtics might say it, making extra road trips takes its toll, especially when the 3 most important players are in their 30s. I remember the Lakers having to hit the road for the 2nd and 3rd rounds in 2003, and by the end they were wiped out. One thing that would help is at least the Celtics wouldn't have to go through 2 time zones.

For the next ten years, if you had to pick between Deron Williams or CP3 whoyou got?
J.A. Adande (3:16 PM)
Had this conversation with a Nike guy and this point came up: Chris Paul is more marketable. That factors in too, if youre trying to sell tickets and get on TV. So that might push me toward Paul. But I can't shake the fact that Deron has done more in tournament/playoff action

Hey JA, love ya work Share Your thoughts on (potential) OK vs UNC matchup and Blake Griffin vs Hansborough in the draft? Griffin is a beast and #1 pick hands down,(even last year?) my buddy agrees but also thinks Hansborough is top 3!! I say late 1st early 2nd at best! Please stop his madness.... Thx
J.A. Adande (3:19 PM)
There's no way Hansbrough goes in the top 3. You see what happens every time he goes up against a big, athletic front line. In the NBA, every front line is big and athletic. But Tyler could leave with an NCAA championship and a host of individual trophies, which would give him one of the best college careers in the last 30 years, right?
how does the fact that "G Dwyane Wade is the first player in NBA history to have 2,000 points, 500 assists, 150 steals and 100 blocks in a season", go completely unmentioned in the sporting world? And how is this not indicative of an mvp?
J.A. Adande (3:20 PM)
Some of those types of stats are kind of arbitrary, aren't they? So if MJ did everything else and only had 99 blocks, he wouldn't be a great player?
kman - North Kakalacky
Adande, Tim Duncan says Tony Parker should be considered as a top five candidate for the MVP. It seems like with every game Parker plays of late, he is designated the top performer in the Daily Dime. If CP3 is often mentioned as a MVP candidate, why not Parker?
J.A. Adande (3:23 PM)
The more I think about it, the more Tony Parker stands out as the most unrecognized star in the NBA. We never hear him in the top PG discussion. We never hear him in the MVP talk. Yet the Spurs have stayed in the mix this year without full Tim or Manu. The biggest issue (and this isn't his fault) is that Tim and Manu are still the most important players on that team.Hard to be the league MVP when you're No. 3 on your squad
George (Portland, OR)
j.a. love you man! who's a good matchup for portland in the first round? Bad matchup?
J.A. Adande (3:25 PM)
If I were them I'd want Denver
With Orlando inching its way to the #2 seed, and the Pistons at #7, do you agree with us Pistons fans that we could fight our way to the second round in a series against the Magic?
J.A. Adande (3:27 PM)
Detroit wants no part of Orlando in the playoffs this year
Jeremy (San Luis Obispo)
Do you think Tyreke Evans will enter the draft? If so, around what number do you see him going in the draft?
J.A. Adande (3:28 PM)
I think he will and I think Memphis thinks he will. I'd take him in the top 10. One comparison I heard recently: Penny Hardaway. Don't think he'll be that good at the peak, but might not be as disappointing ultimately either.
Derrick, Toronto [via mobile]
Hey J.A., big fan. Can you please throw us a bone? What is the best case scenario for the Raptors next season? We have too much talent to be this terrible.. Is it the coach?
J.A. Adande (3:31 PM)
In a dream world Bargnani would keep improving, they'd get a better wing player and Bosh would be completely satisfied with the team's direction and want to stay. I could actually see the first 2 things happening a lot easier than the third.
Andrew (Ohio) [via mobile]
JA, can we please put to rest the idea that anyone else should be the MVP this season besides LeBron. Have you seen his 28, 9, and 9 he has put up during the cavs win streak!
J.A. Adande (3:32 PM)
At this point it's not even LeBron's to lose. It's just LeBron's
John (Houston, TX)
If the Rockets do not make it past the second round of the playoffs is it time for Houston to trade Yao ming? Yes, he puts up stats. However, he gets hurt all the time, never made it past the second round of the playoffs, and doent really seem to have the passion to will a team to win! your thoughts?
J.A. Adande (3:34 PM)
Yao has stayed on the court this season and the Rockets are always playoff contenders with him. How would trading him improve the team? And remember, he's 28, should just be hitting his prime
I think the point about Tony Parker is that he is now the #1 guy on that team, at least offensively. Duncan is the rock and anchor on defense, but Parker has quietly become the #1 option on offense.
J.A. Adande (3:36 PM)
I still think a healthy Ginobili is more vital to that team...on both ends of the floor. They didn't have a chance against the Lakers last year because he was hobbled, and won't have a chance this year if he can't go full speed
johnny flyn from syracuse, what type of pro do you see him being?
J.A. Adande (3:38 PM)
I love the way he runs his team, but he's too small to be an impact player on the next level.
Shaq telling someone to get back on D? Really? Does anyone on that team have a right to call out someone else for lack of D?
J.A. Adande (3:39 PM)
If you're talking about the little tiff with Lopez on the sidelines, that wasn't just a matter of defense. Shaq was, uh, questioning his manliness
Why has Darren Collison's stock dropped that much, some mock drafts have him 2nd round?
J.A. Adande (3:40 PM)
It seemed like Collison rarely took over games this year and when Villanova got physical with UCLA Collison and the Bruins wilted. He might have been better off leaving with Love last year when his stock was higher
Will the Cavs regret not getting Shaq come the playoffs?
J.A. Adande (3:43 PM)
No, I think they can win it all, Shaq or no Shaq. I'M regretting it because Shaq is always at his quotatious best in the Finals, and he won't get anywhere near them this year.
Aj (Michigan) [via mobile]
While we are on the topic of college players in the pros, do you think Steph Curry is ready? And, what kind of pro do you think he will be?
J.A. Adande (3:45 PM)
I think he'll be effective. Not dominant, but effective. He can get his shot off. And defenses won't be focused on him the way they are in college, so you'll see him make more of an impact
Arash (anaheim Hills)
I can't remember but has team with Shaq on it ever missed the playoffs?
J.A. Adande (3:46 PM)
His first year in Orlando, which was how they were in the lottery and wound up with Penny the next year.
Is the Venessa Bryant thing big news over in LA? I'm glad it's not making national headlines.
J.A. Adande (3:47 PM)
It was on the front of the LA Times website but buried inside the actual newspaper. Although I'm not sure placement in the paper counts for much anymore. But yes, people were definitely talking about it.
What kind of player do you see Blake becoming? Solid pro? Borderline All-Star? Franchise building block?
J.A. Adande (3:49 PM)
Or just all-star, like Carlos Boozer is when healthy. I think we'll get a sense for Boozer during the workouts. I remember a friend telling me everyone was sleeping on Boozer after he saw him work out, and he was right. Griffin will obviously get more attention going in, but I see him as a similar layer
Everyone talks about which player you would want to build around, but if you had to build a team from scratch around one COACH, who would you rank as your top 3? Thanks!
J.A. Adande (3:53 PM)
I wouldnt want to build a team around a coach...but it seems to have worked in Utah, where they kept Jerry Sloan and built back up around guys that fit his system. Nate McMillan is underrated, I like the way he's had his extremely young team playing the past two years. But if I had the players I wnted, I'd want Phil Jackson to coach them.
Jim (Seattle, WA)
Back to Yao, in reality how valuable is a 7'6" guy who doesn't even pull down 10 boards a game... I feel like they'd be a much better team with someone who rebounds
J.A. Adande (3:55 PM)
You can always bring in guys to rebound. There aren't many guys in the league you can just dump the ball into and get points from him on his own. That's why they should keep him.
Tim (Long Island)
The year after microsurgery is never good for any athlete...so Oden should get the benefit of the doubt...do you think its possible that hell be a top 5 nba player in the near future?
J.A. Adande (3:58 PM)
Look how far he'd have to progress just to get to the top 5 big men. There's Dwight Howard and Duncan and Garnett and Yao and Shaq still, for starters. Al Jefferson's ahead of him. Pau is ahead of him. Bynum's ahead of him. Oden has potential, but there's still a loooong way to go.
J.A. Adande (3:59 PM)
That'll wrap it for this week. I'm starting to get that playoff excitement. They'll be here soon enough. See you next week.
