Chat with Dave Winfield

Winfield played 22 years of professional baseball, spending time with six teams - San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, California Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, and Cleveland Indians. He finished with 3,110 hits and a .283 batting average, hitting 465 home runs. His 2,973 career games ranks 11th all-time, while his 11,003 at bats is eighth.
Winfield will be on hand Tuesday in Beverly Hills, Calif to help Subway kickoff Little League Baseball's 70th season. The day will feature a special four-inning opening day exhibition game. The inaugural event will feature two Los Angeles District 25 teams - Beverly Hills vs. Culver City, the 2008 District Champs. Winfield will coach one team, while Fred Lynn will coach the other.

Dave's running about 5 minutes late everyone. But keep sending those questions in!
Shawn (Sliver Spring, MD)
Mr. Winfield, what made you get involved with little league baseball?
Dave Winfield (4:09 PM)
That's the entry point for the sport and I love this game! The ballpark was a half block down from where I grew up and that's where my brother and I started to play. It was the first place where we played organized baseball.
Miles (St. Louis, MO)
What do you think should be done to get more African Americans back involeved in baseball?
Dave Winfield (4:12 PM)
First thing I would suggest is reading my last book "Dropping The Ball." I think it's up to parents and community advocates to do what they can in their hometowns to bring kids of all colors to the sport. Major League baseball is doing what they can with the Urban Youth Academy but it's really up to every city and community to ensure that baseball is played by everyone.
Hank (Miami)
How cool is it for you to be a part of the kickoff with Little League this year?
Dave Winfield (4:14 PM)
Very nice! Many people don't know with all the things I do inside and out of baseball that I still coach little league baseball in California. I enjoy every minute of it!
Steiny (NYC)
What was the first thing that went through your head when you found out that you had been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame?
Dave Winfield (4:17 PM)
Waiting by the phone for the call was kind of like waiting for Christmas as a Kid. The second call that I got was from the commissioner of baseball and at that time they were recording the phone calls. I answered the phone, put it on speaker, and accidentally hung up on him. It's was pretty funny!
Will (Oregon)
You were drafted in three different sports...if you hadn't gone into baseball, which one would you have played?
Dave Winfield (4:18 PM)
Basketball. I enjoyed the competition and the physical nature of the sport. Football you're always on the verge of injury so that was third on my list. Baseball, basketball, and then football.
Dave Winfield (4:20 PM)
I'm glad to help Subway kick of the 70th season of little league baseball. Hopefully Little League Baseball will positively impact the lives of over three million children around the world.
