Hey everyone, Mel will be chatting as planned at 1 p.m. ET Friday!
Mel Kiper (1:03 PM)
We have a lot of action. We had the Cutler trade. Some players moving up and moving down. Some new hot guys and where they're going.
John, Oak Park, IL
What kind of WR's will there be available for the Bears in the second round?
Mel Kiper (1:04 PM)
That group would include, maybe, Kenny Britt, Rutgers; Brian Robiskie, OSU; you've got to factor in Pat White. Mohamed Massaquoi has to be in there. Derrick Williams. Jauquin Iglesias. All those guys are possible twos. Britt is not getting out of the second round. Those are some of the guys you'd be considering.
How do you think the Cutler trade affects the drafting of the first round QBs? Where do you think Pat White ends up and at what position?
Mel Kiper (1:06 PM)
No, it doesn't really effect Pat White at all. What it does is effect Detroit. In that division with Cutler and Rodgers, if you don't take Matthew Stafford, what are you thinking? If you put Stafford in there, then you're matching QBs in abilities. If they were ever wondering if this was the right move, I think the Cutler trade seals the deal there. It doesn't effect the situation at QB, unless Denver moves up to get Mark Sanchez. He's a hot guy right now. Kyle Orton was having a real good year for Chicago last year until he had that sprained ankle last year. Chris Simms hasn't done anything for 2 years, but he was playing well when he got hurt with Tampa. Knowing McDaniels had success in New England with Brady and Cassell, he could try to catch lightning in the bottle again late in the draft.
Jeff (Los Angeles, CA)
Mel, why did Denver want Kyle Orton in the Cutler deal. Is he really an upgrade over Chris Simms? Either way they need a future QB in this draft. Assuming they get Sanchez or Freeman at #12, what positions or players do you see the Broncos targeting at #18, #54, #79 and #84 (the other picks in the top 3 rounds)?
Mel Kiper (1:08 PM)
They do need a future QB. Did anybody think Matt Cassell was a future QB back in August? He was barely hanging on. Orton was a real nice player at Purdue. You could develop one of these players to be a very good starter. But there's nothing else there. Unless they move up to get Sanchez or Stafford, and that's unlikely. Was this trade contingent on Orton? It was on separating them from another team. It had a lot to do with Orton. This notion that Orton or Simms can't be the option long term, I wouldn't count them out.
Mel, how much are the positive test results that have been reported going to affect guys like Harvin, etc?
Mel Kiper (1:09 PM)
For BJ Raji, you're talking about dropping from the 5-6 pick to the 10-15 area. That's a significant drop. Percy Harvin could still go 17. He could drop further. But he was never projected to go higher.
If McDaniels is going to try to catch "lightning in a bottle" this year with a late round qb, who are some of the guys he might select?
Mel Kiper (1:12 PM)
A lot of them. Here are some names: Curtis Painter, Purdue; Drew Willy, Buffalo; Tom Brandstater, Fresno State; Cullen Harper, Clemson; Hunter Cantwell, Louisville; Nathan Brown, Central Arkansas; David Johnson, Tulsa; Chase Patton, Missouri; Graham Harrell, Texas Tech; Chase Daniel, Missouri; John Parker Wilson, Alabama; Mike Reilly, Central Washington; Stephen McGee, Texas A+M; Brian Hoyer, Michigan State; Jason Boltus, Hartwick; Rhett Bomar, Sam Houston State.
Mel Kiper (1:12 PM)
That's a boatload of guys. Tuitama as well.
Steve (Phx, AZ)
Hey Mel do you think the Bears will make the playoffs now?
Mel Kiper (1:16 PM)
I'm amazed that you didn't say Super Bowl! They just signed Orlando Pace to play LT. They'll move Chris Williams to RT. Frank Omyiale will be playing guard. Earl Bennett was a draft choice last year. Showed some progress. Now he'll be hooking up with his old Vanderbilt QB in Jay Cutler. Hunter Hillenmeyer, a LB, is also from Vanderbilt. Familiarity with Cutler from his former teammates will be there. But defensively, they had issues last year. They had some games where they played very poorly. They can't forget about defense, but they have to get better at WR. Hester and Bennett will be your WRs with Rasheed Davis as the slot. They're going to have to do some good scouting. Outside of DeSean Jackson last year, normally WRs don't come into the NFL and have a big impact. The one that I think could is Brian Robiskie from OSU.
Mel, hope you are getting some sleep lately, do you think the bucs have enough to offer to move up and grab Sanchez and how high would they need to climb to grab him. Thanks Mel.
Mel Kiper (1:17 PM)
Well, I appreciate the concern about the sleep. Not much these days. But Josh Freeman from Kansas State and the familiarity with their new coach. But moving up to get Sanchez, you've got St. Louis at No. 2 and Seattle at No. 4 seriously thinking about him. I don't think they'll be able to move up to get Sanchez. I think they could get Freeman where they are.
Mel Do you feel the Pats should have held longer on Cassell and tried to get better draft picks for him and are they definite that Brady will be ready to go?
Mel Kiper (1:19 PM)
Yeah, they believe very confident in Brady. And Matt Cassell didn't have a lot of suitors. As John Clayton said, Cassell is an acquired taste. Josh McDaniels was in Denver and tried to get him and Scott Pioli in Kansas City drafted him. Matt Cassell wasn't on anyone's radar coming out of USC. Most teams didn't have a positive scouting report on him. Cutler had 8-10 teams that were interested. With Cassell there were two. It limited the leverage that New England had.
Nick (Portland, OR)
Mel, all I hear are positive things regarding Robiskie, so why isn't he projected as a surefire late first rounder?
Mel Kiper (1:20 PM)
He doesn't have great speed. He doesn't have vertical stretch speed. He's not going to wow you over. He's steady and consistent. He doesn't have that kind of explosive overall ability. He should be a good player, but he's not "special." He doesn't have a great upside. What you see is what you get. Solid, very consistent, hard working performer. That's not to say that he won't play up to the level of a first rounder.
Who is the most overrated prospect in this year's draft?
Mel Kiper (1:22 PM)
From where he's going to go, Eugene Monroe is a little overrated. I think he's a top 10 guy. Some thought No. 1, No. 4. I don't think he'll be an elite LT. He should go 8-12. If he does, then I don't think he's overrated. If he goes higher than that, then I think he is overrated.
Mel Kiper (1:23 PM)
Other guys, depending on where he goes, Josh Freeman is probably a little overrated. He played like a first rounder in some games and like a fifth rounder in others. If he goes to Tampa at 19 then I think he's overrated, based on how I have him graded.
Mel Kiper (1:24 PM)
Vontae Davis, great physical talent, didn't always play to his physical talent. He's going to go pretty high. He has to prove that he can play as a consistent performer. This is the NFL, not the Big Ten. He was a good player, not a great player. He will go high because of his great physical talent. Also, Everette Brown. He's got great character. If he goes in the top 11-12, I think that's a little early. He's not a big guy and not a super fast guy. I think you're looking at a guy that's a good NFL player, but I think that's a little high.
Do you think Minnesota is one of the teams that will be willing to trade down? They no longer have a fourth round pick.
Mel Kiper (1:26 PM)
It's possible. You could look at them and they could look at Hakeem Nicks or Heyward-Bey. They could look at Oher or Britton. They could go WR or OT or they could trade down. Where they're picking, they're going to have some offers.
hank Hondo Texas
who do you see the Steelers drafting?
Mel Kiper (1:27 PM)
I think the main thing with the Steelers is they're looking at upgraded the OL. At center. You hear the name Alex Mack and Wood. These centers are going to go very high. THey're going to go both early. WR is another area that they could look at. CB as well.
Mel could you tell us your opinion on Sean Smith, what type of player will he be, which team would he be a good fit on, & what round do you feel he'll be drafted? Thanks.
Mel Kiper (1:29 PM)
I think he can be a good player. One thing about Sean Smith, there's no one out there that has his physical ability as a DB in the draft. His size, recovery speed, long arms. He's a former WR. He made great strides this year. He'll be a little of a work in progress. You hope you can coach him up. He'll probably be an early to mid second round pick. The size he brings to the table, that's impressive. He was a fast riser all year. He really took to the position change from WR to CB. His technique and feel for the position will improve with age. He's not where he needs to be yet, but if you coach him up, you could have a special corner.
Who does Michael Crabtree compare most favorably to in the NFL?? Do you think there's any "bust" potential with Crabtree?
Mel Kiper (1:31 PM)
I don't see any bust potential. He's competitive, sure handed, tough WR. I think he compares to a Larry Fitzgerald and an Andre Johnson. If he's anywhere close to being as good as those two, you hit the jackpot. You'll have to be patient. There's a learning curve at WR. Jeremy Maclin and Percy Harvin will have to adjust a lot with their route running. Jeremy Maclin, he'll have to run routes he's never run before. It's a major tranisition to the NFL.
What are the chances of the Dallas Cowboys moving up in the draft to take a safety? If they don't move up what will they do with the 51st overall pick?
Mel Kiper (1:33 PM)
If you look at them, you'd like to add a WR to the mix. That's the big one. They'd like to get a backup NT. Another OLB. They added Sensabahl and they have Ken Hamlin at safety.
Mel, what do you see Cincy doing in the first couple rounds?
Mel Kiper (1:33 PM)
I think with Cincinnati, in the first round, they could go with Crabtree or Maclin with a WR. Eugene Monroe. I thought BJ Raji, but now you wonder about that. Second round, I have them with Woods, the center out of Louisville.
Mel Kiper (1:34 PM)
We'll be back on WEdnesday next week. I was up at ESPN on Wednesday this past week, so we had to move it. We'll be back to our normal time on Wednesday.
