Jim (Hendersonville, TN)
Hey, Bill Williamson is reporting there's interest in Cutler from the Titans. You and Wyatt both reported this is unlikely, and it seems to be unlikely given the team's history. But have you heard anything like this from an authoritative source, on or off the record?
Paul Kuharsky (2:59 PM)
Interest and action are two different things. And certainly there are people trying to stir up interest -- given the Titans locale, Cutler himself, perhaps? Mort's report today is it'll take at least two firsts. You see the Titans parting with two firsts?
Paul Kuharsky (2:59 PM)
Hi all, thanks for coming. I'll stick around as much extra -- up to an hour -- as questions require.
Steiny (NYC)
What kind of impact will Tra Thomas have on the Jaguars next season?
Paul Kuharsky (3:01 PM)
Makes it so they don't have to immediately find and install a young left tackle. He can pass protect. Needs to do better vs. the run and has said so himself.
Dan, Duclin, Ohio,
Whats The Chance of my Jaguars getting Jay Cutler cuz really we need a QB that can lead us no offense to Garard but we need a leader when everyone is down that will bring everyone up?
Paul Kuharsky (3:01 PM)
No chance at all. The Jaguars will not be a bidder.
Farris in Madison, TN
With the Bronco's saying they want two 1st rounders in exchange for Cutler what do you think about this trade for the Titans. The Titans could send this year and next years #1 and possibly still come out great. If they do better in the playoffs next year all they would be giving up is possibly two 30th picks. I say go for it if that's all it cost for a franchise QB. Great stuff on the Zone!
Paul Kuharsky (3:02 PM)
And with two No. 30 picks they can get the replacement for Harper and the replacement for Bulluck, say. That's a lot. And they just signed a QB. They will get a better offer than that anyway.
Perry (MS)
Where do you ultimately see Torry Holt signing? And have you heard any info about how his visit in TN went?
Paul Kuharsky (3:03 PM)
My guess is he doesn't sign anywhere until after the draft. Haven't heard anything yet today.
Redding, Nashville
Do you feel Jacob Ford is more deserving of a starting DE spot than Kearse? Whats Ford going to have to do to get the job from Jevon?
Paul Kuharsky (3:05 PM)
If they are both healthy, they'll both get snaps. But they both come with a risk of wearing down. Starting isn't the most important thing, being on the field in pass rush situations is. Ford can get more of those snaps if he maintains his growth curve.
Allen (houston)
so the titans really signed petey faggins, or is that an april fools joke for titans fans.....can you imagine him trying to cover AJ, or even Walter for that matter
Paul Kuharsky (3:05 PM)
If they draft well and Cary Williams pans out, I could see Faggins not making the team. Agent didn't share his signing bonus, which means it wasn't very big.
Bud (Houston, TX)
How much power do I have over personnel these days? (Well, obviously all, but how much do I use it?) I remember when I got rid of many of our great players in a "Fire Sale" in the early 90s. But how heavy a hand do I use now?
Paul Kuharsky (3:07 PM)
Not very heavy. Fisher and Reinfeldt make reasoned cases for things and you mostly say OK.
Joe (Nashville, TN)
So Paul... how much of your inner soccer hooligan came out at the game last night?
Paul Kuharsky (3:08 PM)
You didn't see me streaking with a beer in my hand?
warren nashville
the titans recently picked up several compensatory draft picks. can you explain how the compensatory picks are determined and are they just extra picks generated from the NFL office or do they come from other teams. thanks.
Paul Kuharsky (3:09 PM)
They don't come from other teams, they are picks the league adds to the draft. There is a complicated formula that measure's last year's free agent losses versus gains, accounting for their play and production. So Titans got four for losing the likes of LaBoy and Odom and Starks while not bringing in much beyond Scott.
Dustin, Stanford CA
Hi Paul, Do you think the Titans will really draft and sign 10 players? Do they have that many roster/practice squad slots open? Would it be to their advantage to target specific players and trade up to get them?
Paul Kuharsky (3:10 PM)
I think they'll move up a few times to get targets in later rounds. No room for 10, no. But I don't think they go in hell bent on not drafting 10.
Odar Price Hampton, Virginia
What will it take for the Jacksonville Jaguars to get back to the playoffs?
Paul Kuharsky (3:11 PM)
Huge improvement from a lot of guys, huge production from a couple rookies and dips by both the Titans and the Colts.
Gut from Wantagh, New York
There is a lot of buzz about DE Robert Ayers since his surprise performance at senior Bowl practices and that game. However, his combine performance was below par and he looks more like a guy who should bulk to 280lbs and move inside like Jason Jones. Considering they have several of these players, do you think the Titans would take him or look for a better pass rushing DE (Barwin, Johnson, Maybin, Sidbury)?
Paul Kuharsky (3:13 PM)
I don't see them targeting Dline early. They have numbers both inside and out, including young guys who will be around. Now if best player available at 30 is a DE or DT, they could still take him,
Jason in Murfreesboro
If the NFL investigates and find that the Redskins did tamper with Haynesworth before he hit free agency, what will be the likely result? Would the Titans profit at all from this (gaining draft picks, swapping picks with Washington), or would it be simply a punishment for the Redskins?
Paul Kuharsky (3:14 PM)
More about punishing the offender than rewarding the "victim." Titans could get a swap of mid-round picks with Washington out of it, while Skins would also lose a pick somewhere. I doubt there is enough concrete evidence for anything to happen.
Frank Nguyen: (Midwest City, OK)
Is marvin harrison going to end up ANYWHERE from now until Draft day? I would like him to be a no.2 or slot receiver for my Eagles since we really already have a pretty deep good receiver in Desean jackson. Him sharing the no.2 spot with jason Avant looks good to me. Input???
Paul Kuharsky (3:15 PM)
I can't see any reason why anyone would sign him before the draft. There is no threat of losing him to anyone else. He won't draw a double team and may be too proud to take a contract befitting an aging No. 3...
David, Dayton OH
Long time Bronco fan and will not be no more. 1st Portis and now Cutler... Will Denver even come close to the .500 mark this year? What do you think about Cutler wearing 6 with the Redskins?
Paul Kuharsky (3:16 PM)
You don't like Champ Bailey-for-Portis? They won that trade for sure. I think Detroit or Tampa should make the move to get Cutler.
Wesley (Arvada, CO)
Would it be smart for the broncos to just play Simms and trade Cutler for some defense? I feel like they're going to be mediocre any way they do it next year!
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
At the very least you'd have to have a playable alternative to Simms.
JL (Hoboken, NJ)
What do you think Schwartz is thinking? I think he'd be crazy to take Stafford so I hope he's leaning towards one of the OTs or Curry
Paul Kuharsky (3:17 PM)
I think they will take an OT and I think they are serious suitors for Cutler.
Tyler (CO)
With Cutler forcing his way out, can the Broncos actually get a fair trade out of this?
Paul Kuharsky (3:18 PM)
Sure they can. I bet they had a good enough offer before they came out and said they were trading him. If they don't get one they like, they can always change their mind and try, again, to kiss and make up or leave him to hold out and lose a fortune..
David FL
DeAngello Hall and Vick played together at V-tech and for ATL giving him something in the locker room. Given the skins track record would they go after vick if they cant land cutler in 2010
Paul Kuharsky (3:19 PM)
Anything is possible. I can't see Hall having much influence, and I can't imagine you'd want to put Vick with one of his old buddies.
Zach (Nashville, TN)
Do you think Kerry will implode like he did two years ago, and then Vine Young will come in and take us to the playoffs? That seems to be the way the Titans QBs like to play now, considering recent history.
Paul Kuharsky (3:20 PM)
By implode, do you mean play horribly when given a week and a half to get ready to start a season leading a bad team? You're finding a trend where there isn't one.
Mike (Kansas City)
How is Cassell, who the Pats certainly could've used, worth a 2nd rounder, but Cutler, who the Broncos basically "have" to get rid of, worth 2 1sts?
Paul Kuharsky (3:20 PM)
You're worth what a team can get for you.
Gregg, Denver
Detroit: Cutler Denver: Detroits 2009 1st, 2010 1st, Brady Quinn Cleveland: Detroits 33rd pick 2009 Thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (3:22 PM)
Cleveland not getting much there, huh? Detroit has two firsts in 2009, you talking No. 1 or No. 20?
Matt (NY, NY)
Hey Paul, what are your thoughts on Bo Scaife skipping workouts? Seems like standard franchise tag maneuvering to me, but is there more to it? I'd think he'd have more bargaining power if he hadn't disappeared in December last year.
Paul Kuharsky (3:22 PM)
Standard. When the time comes, if there is no deal, he'll sign the tender. That's a big number.
JL (Hoboken, NJ)
What'd you think of the US last night? Obviously the result was good but I felt like their offense was very unimaginative and would've been easily stymied by even a slightly stronger opponent. That said, I like the switch to the 4-4-2 and I hope we continue our success
Paul Kuharsky (3:23 PM)
Very nice anytime they actually finish. T&T was packed in pretty good. US did well to create three goals and several more good chances against that sort of D.
Christian (Orlando)
Why is it that all i hear about cutler is washington? is it because the bucs are staying in the shadows, or because they really are not as interested as people expected them to be?
Paul Kuharsky (3:24 PM)
Washington has more people whispering about their intentions than the Bucs, who have a new regime and more restraint.
Dan (Denver, CO)
If none of this had happened and, say, the Browns randomly picked up the phone and offered the 5th and next year's first for Cutler, wouldn't that be a deal you couldn't refuse regardless of the circumstances?
Paul Kuharsky (3:25 PM)
If you believe Cutler is the next great QB, well a great QB is worth more than that. But if you think he's that great, I figure you'd be keeping him.
Derek (Landrum, SC)
I have heard that Jay says he didnt want to be traded and doesnt want to leave Denver. Skip Bayless says this could be a perfect time for them to sit down and work this out better Broncos and Jay. You think that is possible to change their minds at this point?
Paul Kuharsky (3:26 PM)
How can he say he never asked to be traded when his agent has said it more than once on the record? Just because you say something untrue out loud, it doesn't become true.
Big Moe( Washington DC)
Do you see Mike Walker and the tw0 DE's from last year making big strides for the Jags?
Paul Kuharsky (3:27 PM)
They are sure hoping so. Walker's got to stay healthy, no easy order and they have to get two more receivers even if he's going to be great. The 3-4 wrinkle is largely to benefit Groves. Harvey needs a big camp after last year's holdout.
Chuck (Goodlettsville, TN)
With half of the Titan's defense becoming free agents next year, who do you believe they will target to sign extensions this year i.e. Brown, VandenBosch, Kearse, Tulloch, Harper, or Bulluck?
Paul Kuharsky (3:29 PM)
Not Harper or Kearse, they will let old guys go. If KVB is back to form he should be a priority. Bulluck remains to be seen. I think they will try to keep Brown. Tulluch is relatively easy to replace if they cannot hold on to him. MLB is a situational role for them.
Rich (Long Island, NY)
Paul, I am surprised that the Texans have not popped up in the Cutler talks. I would think Gary Kubiak would love a chance to have a stud to throw the ball to Johnson 120 times a year. I also think Schaub would be a good fit in McDaniels system. What is your take?
Paul Kuharsky (3:30 PM)
Houston is fully invested in Schaub and I don't think it's considering any change.
Josh Stl, Missouri
Jags chances of trading down in the first?
Paul Kuharsky (3:31 PM)
Depends on who is gone and who is there. If the tackles and receivers and Raji are gone, I think they'd want to get out, probably to someone who wants a QB.
Mike (CO)
Who comes out on top (Wash./Denver)if Cutler goes to D.C.? And do you really think Denver won the Portis/Bailey swap? Portis has average 1,400 yards per season in Washington (not including the year he was hurt and out most of the season).
Paul Kuharsky (3:34 PM)
A top corner is harder to get than a top running back. Steve Slaton was sixth in rushing as a rookie third rounder. People find RBs a lot more easily than they find a Cortland Finnegan in the seventh.
Rameen(Charleston, IL)
Will the Colts draft a WR in the first three rounds?
Paul Kuharsky (3:34 PM)
Yes. I think they could take Nicks or Britt at 27.
Maurice (DC)
More afc south blogging.
Paul Kuharsky (3:35 PM)
Eight posts yesterday. Not too bad for a quiet period, is it?
Anthony, Nashville
Why is Middle Linebacker a situational position for the Titans while the backbone of other teams like the Ravens & Bears?
Paul Kuharsky (3:36 PM)
The Titans play a lot of nickel, and they have two OLBs they like a lot and want to play most every down. Different philosophy and personnel than Ravens and Bears.
Paul Kuharsky (3:36 PM)
OK, let's try 20 minutes no Cutler. Non Cutler questions and AFC South questions will be moved to head of the line.
Matt
Mel Kiper is reporting that Nicks has gained about 15 pounds since the combine. Do you think this could push the Colts in a different direction (assuming they were targeting Nicks to begin with, of course)?
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
Doesn't sound like a reason to go get him, no. But if you love him and are confident you can get him slimmed down, you can still take him.
JJ
Is it true Lendale is down to like 225
Paul Kuharsky (3:38 PM)
Watterson said White was 20 less at start of the offseason program than he was last year. I'd predict that's 230 or 225.
Sean (TR NJ)
Hi Paul thanks for coming on and fielding our questions. I was watching sports center last night and I have been hearing the Titans could show interest in Cutler. How does that make sense? the Titans are commited to Collins and are they giving up on Young? What do you think?
Paul Kuharsky (3:39 PM)
I think it's Cutler's side trying to stir interest because Nashville is a place he'd like to land. I've heard no indication they are willing to spend such a high price and then deal with having just spent on Collins.
Bob Fort Lauderdale, FL
Paul, saw article today on Bud Adams 86 years old looking to the future when grandson takes over team. How is Fishers relationship with him. Am I looking too far ahead?
Paul Kuharsky (3:40 PM)
The grandson is about two years out of college. Likeable guy. But years from being equipped to run the team.
Keith (Austin)
Isn't Vince Young caught in no man's land? It seems he is fighting an uphill battle to regain the confidence of the team but the Titans certainly couldn't any real value for such a high, fairly recent draft pick, correct?
Paul Kuharsky (3:41 PM)
No value. Has a chance to win back some confidence this offseason and preseason, but is probably on his way out of town already career-wise.
Jeff, Mpls
Could you see the Jags taking Sanchez if he is available at their pick?
Paul Kuharsky (3:43 PM)
Honestly, I don't know. I can't see them not filling another hole with that pick or trading it for more. You give Garrard another season with better weapons and protection. Then if it doesn't work Smith can say, 'He wasn't my guy, that wasn't my contract" and they can look for the next guy. But we don't know Smith in this role. And maybe he thinks a Sanchez is too good to pass on.
Andrew (Wichita, KS)
Can Mike Hart be the #2 RB in Indy?
Paul Kuharsky (3:44 PM)
He was impressive in the preseason last year. I think he may have a chance to win it. I still think they should re-sign Rhodes if they don't draft a RB.
Paul Kuharsky (3:44 PM)
No Cutler talk until 3:00 Central. Focus is on AFC South and non-Cutler questions.
bret (michigan)
How could the Jags possibly draft anything other than WR or Oline I would ask?
Paul Kuharsky (3:45 PM)
If Raji slipped I'd take him in a second. Re-establish the sort of Stroud-Henderson identity that served them so well.
Kellon (San Francisco)
Houston, specifically Kubiak, seems to have pinned all their hopes on Schaub. What has he really done to justify that loyalty (other than the price it cost to get him)? If Sanchez slides, shouldn't Houston seriously consider him?
Paul Kuharsky (3:46 PM)
QBs take time. If you love one and he does all you ask at practice and in meetings and plays well enough when he's on the field, you stick with him and see it through. Show me the team that changes QBs every year that wins consistently?
Steve (SF)
If Young has no value, why wouldn't some team take a chance on him for a 4th or whatever it would take? The Niners want to run the ball, seems like he'd fit in well under fellow Texan Singletary.
Paul Kuharsky (3:47 PM)
By no value, I mean he's not valuable enough for a team to trade a fourth for. They'd rather use their fourth than trade for him, and his contract.
Jordan (Hendersonville, TN)
Hey Paul, how's it going? First, do you think the Titans will end up signing Torry Holt? Secondly, if they do, does this rule a WR in one of the first two rounds? It seems that it would, but I can't help but hope that they sign Holt AND draft a WR early so that he can learn from one of the greatest of our time, especially Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt who would benefit most from learning Holt's route running expertise (since they are not quite burners). What are your thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (3:49 PM)
I think the coaches should do the coaching, I'm not into signing a player predominantly for his impact on other players at his position. I don't think the Titans are as interested in Holt as everyone would like them to be. I expect them to draft one in the first three rounds. Price comes down later, maybe they sign him. Could be wrong, of course.
Derek (Knoxville TN)
Paul, with the Draft coming closer its no secret that the Titans seem to follow a specific trend. With Lendale White going into a contract year is it likely that the Titans draft a RB in one of the first 3 rounds?
Paul Kuharsky (3:50 PM)
I don't think that early. But a big back for 2010 is a concern for them.
Rich (Nashville, TN)
I think its a shame everyone has lost faith in VY. This happened to him in Texas and after being benched he came back. He is trying to become the starter he once was and wants to work for it, why can't anyone give him a chance?
Paul Kuharsky (3:52 PM)
Why doesn't he have to earn his chance like everyone else? Should be be entitled to it? Everyone around him says what you've said, which helps continue to fuel his problem, where he thinks everything is fine, he's just working hard, staying humble, yada, yada. He doesn't really get it -- what it takes to be a starting QB in the league, not just on Sunday afternoons, but all around. If someone would just give the poor guy a chance. (I mean beyond investing mutli-millions and using the third overall pick on him.)
chauncey (teaneck)
Is David Garrard done?
Paul Kuharsky (3:53 PM)
Not in the eyes of the Jaguars. Shouldn't it take more than one bad year to be "done?"
Matt
Is it a big deal that DeMeco Ryans and Dunta Robinson are skipping voluntary workouts? Will the Texans wait until after the draft to get their contract situations resolved?
Paul Kuharsky (3:54 PM)
Not great, but not a huge deal, no. And Robinson isn't going to turn his back on that franchise number when the deadline comes around if they haven't reached a long-term deal.
Jim (LA, CA)
If Kearse performs as well this year as he did last will the Titans offer him an extension?
Paul Kuharsky (3:54 PM)
Maybe a one year deal, but I would think they'd be ready to get younger.
Kerry Collins (Nashville TN)
I didnt do anything to really earn the starting job except be there when the guy infront of me failed. It was the same way in NYC in Oakland in New Orleans i failed when they handed me millions as the #5 overall pick
Paul Kuharsky (3:55 PM)
Well you blew it back then. Don't shortchange yourself now when you are much more mature. When you got the job you didn't throw picks, you won everyone's respect, you were accountable, you won games.
Rob (Cape Coral, FL)
Paul...it seems that every year, the Titans draft a player in the second round that leaves fans wondering who he is, but the player usually turns out to be solid (i.e. Roos and Jones). Can you point out any such players that Titans fans should keep an eye on in the upcomming draft?
Paul Kuharsky (3:57 PM)
Interesting how you left Chris Henry off the list. No, I have no idea who their surprise second rounder would be -- that's a big part of what would make it a surprise. Second rounders we knew plenty about: LenDale White, Ben Troupe, Tyrone Calico, Andre Dyson, Joey Kent.
Andrew (Wichita, KS)
I thought the Craig Hentrich would hang 'em up after this past season, but the Titans still signed him to a deal. Why wouldn't the Titans want to draft a punter, like the kid out of Cincinnati?
Paul Kuharsky (3:58 PM)
Well, they still like Hentrich though he's dropped off. Even if he'd retired, I don't think they would have drafted. They like an experienced guy they can be confident in at a high pressure moment.
Ali
why didnt the broncos go to USC's pro day, they have so much talent
Paul Kuharsky (3:59 PM)
You can miss a Pro Day and still draft a guy from that school. Perhaps they know all they need to know about them. People read way, way too much into tidbits like that.
Frank (Pell Lake, WI)
IF the league goes to a longer regular season, could we see some outdoor teams switching to Field Turf? With NFL, college, and other events the fields would be pretty beat up to play on.
Paul Kuharsky (4:00 PM)
Good point, but... Someone would still have to pay for it. And if you're adding two to the regular season and subtracting two from the preseason, it's the same total.
Matt
What'd the bigger need for the Texans heading into the draft: OLB, S, DE or DT?
Paul Kuharsky (4:01 PM)
I'd put it DT, OLB, S, DE but it seems they have OLB first for sure.
Kerry Collins Nashville
You give me too much credit if i hadnt played horribly and almost got fisher fired they might have kept me starting VY's whole rookie year. Give the kid a break he never should have started back then. Predraft everyone said he would take two or three years to develop we will know this year if thats true or not.
Paul Kuharsky (4:02 PM)
Are we talking about how he shoudn't have started back then, or how he should have started last year or how he should be starting now? The only one I'll agree with is he shouldn't have been starting back then. And look, he went and won Offensive Rookie of the Year. Too bad he couldn't live off that for a career.
Matt
The flip side of your pro day comment...The Colts brought Mark Sanchez in for a private workout. Does anyone really believe for a second he'll be around at 27? Or even that they'd take him? None of those days or workouts really mean that much...
Paul Kuharsky (4:03 PM)
Thank you. You are wingman or copilot for the remainder of this chat.
Justin (NYC)
What are the odds of Raji falling to the jags?
Paul Kuharsky (4:03 PM)
Don't look good at all.
JB (TX)
So no fans are really begging for extra games, players (Mawae) and coaches (Del Rio on NFL Network last week) aren't into it. Can you give me a reason (other than money) that Goodell is pushing this again?
Paul Kuharsky (4:04 PM)
RFans hate the preseason and the league rips them of by charging full price for it. That's a great reason. I have a lot more. Please see my blog debate from Wednesday on this topic, in which I crushed Mike Simmerin' Sando.
Vince Young (Nashville)
I am going to be the QB of the Titans for the next 10 years i am going to mature. Remember another guy named Young who could run around a little bit was a washout in TB but he became a HOF'er in SF. I am going to be an HOF'er in Nashville
Paul Kuharsky (4:05 PM)
April Fools Day was yesterday.
Arty (Coeur D'Alene, ID) [via mobile]
Paul, why do you think the Colts struggled to run so much last year, and will they have similar struggles this year?
Paul Kuharsky (4:06 PM)
Combination of a lot of things. Oline, and Ugoh in particular, didn't do well enough and Addai was banged up but often ineffective. They've got to be better and it'll come from improvement of the guys that have more than an influx of new personnel.
Sean (TR NJ)
I think the Texans are a up and coming team but they need certain positions filled and a little more depth. However, with the limited time I had to see them last year it looks like to me that O-line might be worth adressing before sexy picks like WR. Your thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (4:07 PM)
Alex Gibbs did wonders with what they have and if they are compelled to add it won't be with a high pick.
Mitch (Coral Springs, FL)
Hey Paul, what's up? Will the Jaguars go after Crabtree if he falls that far, or will they pursue an MLB?
Paul Kuharsky (4:08 PM)
Nobody is taking an MLB at eight with the Jags list of needs. I think they'd grab Crabtree and could take Maclin if Crabtree is gone.
Jim (LA, CA)
Which AFC South team has done the most to improve their team via free agency so far in this off season?
Paul Kuharsky (4:09 PM)
If we're talking beyond teams re-signing their own guys, it's probably Houston because of Smith. But it's not been much of a competition.
Justin (NYC)
What do you think of Andre Smith? Where do you think he will fall?
Paul Kuharsky (4:11 PM)
I've got no interest in a guy that can't pull himself together for huge moments when he needs to impress. If he fell far enough to become a value to me, I'd fine him for running that 40 shirtless when I called to say I'd drafted him. Maybe around 20th. But he seems to be bouncing back better than that, that's just me...
John McClain (Houston)
What's your favorite AFC south story line going into the 2009 season. I need some fresh story ideas.
Paul Kuharsky (4:11 PM)
The General had a great line in his recent chat -- someone asked what war he was from and he said "Civil..."
Song (Orlando, FL)
I think Mawae's comment about an extra two game will take a toll on their body is absurd. The players and the league can offset this by having less practice. Football is year round of body conditioning.
Paul Kuharsky (4:12 PM)
Nevermind practice. If you get paid for 18 instead of 16, you're probably going to be happy at the chance, no?
Mike (Rome, NY)
Do you think the Jets should try and unload Thomas Jones while his stock is up? He will be making a good amount next year and Leon Washington is a good young RB. If they don't feel Washington can handle the load, they could always try and get Moreno.
Paul Kuharsky (4:14 PM)
I don't know that the stock for any RB who will be 31 during the season is ever really up on the trade market.
Justin (NYC)
Are you worried at all about Crabtree's foot? Do you think he should be a top 10?
Paul Kuharsky (4:14 PM)
Word is it's not a long-term issue. So yes, he should go where he would have gone without the foot injury.
JL (Hoboken, NJ)
PK, very few ellipses today, que pasa?
Paul Kuharsky (4:16 PM)
Finally someone notices!!! Readers asked for a two-hour chat, and here's a two-hour chat. Readers complained about the ..., and so I've tried to wean myself off of them. Full service blogger here.
Don (Denver Colorado)
What are your thoughts on the possibility of no salary cap next year, how will it affect the league in general?
Paul Kuharsky (4:18 PM)
No where near as much as people expect. There are all kind of other mechanisms to offset it. Unrestricted free agency arrives after six years, not four and teams get a second franchise tag and the top teams will have limits on their ability to sign outside guys. So there won't be that many attractive guys worth big dollars on the market.
Dan (Chicago)
I think if Bradford and McCoy came out this year, they would be ahead of Stafford...with that being said, the odds of the Lions drafting in the top three in 2010 are pretty high...why then wouldn't they draft Curry or an OT this year? Knowing that they can get a better QB next draft. Far fetched?
Paul Kuharsky (4:18 PM)
I don't think you plan this year's draft anticipating next year's draft, no matter who you are. Unless you're trading this year's second for a first next year.
Jake (IA)
According to a source being reported by Sports Illustrated, BJ Raji had a positive drug test at the NFL combine. Where do you see his stock going dropping to in the draft?
Paul Kuharsky (4:19 PM)
If true, he probably drops. Can you say Warren Sapp?
Eric (Sacramento)
So, you guys are actively trying to ignore the West Coast? What are the 49ers looking at in the draft?
Paul Kuharsky (4:21 PM)
I am the AFC South blogger. Until the Jags move to LA (joke), I don't do a lot of West Coast, no, especially in the sort of specifics you are looking for. Mike Sando is your man.
stephon (Anaheim)
I heard patrick turner ran a 4.58 40 and looked pretty good, what do u think of his chances of landing with the titans in the later rounds since fisher has ties to sc??
Paul Kuharsky (4:21 PM)
I could see him in Nashville late or as an undrafted. Nevermind USC. Turner is from Nashville.
Richard (Atlanta)
You really think BJ Raji is going to drop? I'm sure Calvin Johnson, Amobe Okoye, and Shawne Merriman would disagree.
Paul Kuharsky (4:21 PM)
How about Warren Sapp?
Mad Mike (Houston)
Paul: Do you see the Colts or Titans taking a step backwards this year, or do you expect them to vie for the wild card behind the Texans? Thanks.....MM
Paul Kuharsky (4:23 PM)
Cute. I think they will both be good and contend for the top of the division. I see room for Colts to falter, but they've got this QB who tends to make up for a lot. Pre draft, I see Houston as 9-7ish, fighting for last Wild Card but missing out.
Billy Volek (San Diego, CA)
Last week you said I acted presumptuous about being the Titans' starter. But on my Wikipedia article it said I lied to Jeff Fisher. What did I lie about?
Paul Kuharsky (4:24 PM)
The Billy Volek bio on Wikipedia article by.... Billy Volek. You know anyone can write a Wikipedia entry, right? Fisher and Volek do not like each at all.
Mike (Washington DC)
Regarding the Texans, are they still lacking the talent to compete with other teams in their division? Or is it more a psychological hump that they need to get over?
Paul Kuharsky (4:25 PM)
Talent. On defense. The psychology comes one you have the people.
Andrew (Wichita, KS)
Alge was kind of quiet last year. Do you think he'll be more productive in his second season as a Titan?
Paul Kuharsky (4:26 PM)
Probably not. He's quite slow, so he's going to block and catch a couple short passes. With better receivers -- Washington so far, more to come we expect -- there should be more better options.
Amy (Marion, IA)
Any chances the Colts get Larry Johnson?
Paul Kuharsky (4:27 PM)
I don't think so. They don't go outside for veteran additions very often. And no one likes old running backs much.
Andrew (Wichita, KS)
If or when do the Colts address the WR position in this year's draft?
Paul Kuharsky (4:28 PM)
I'm thinking right at No. 27.
Paul Kuharsky (4:29 PM)
The Cutler ban has gone so well it's been extended indefinitely. We go two hours today, and we focus on AFC South.
Billy Volek (San Diego, CA)
Quit dodging the question. This all went down like a spurned lover situation rather than the business of football, which is atypical for Fisher. Do you have any idea what the lie was? (Fisher was quoted as saying I lied.)
Paul Kuharsky (4:31 PM)
Ancient history is either your favorite subject or you are a member of the Volek family. Volek, if I remember correctly, felt he was lied to about the starting job being his. I was among those who thought though he was in line to inherit it, he was better off playing better and earning it and putting coaches' concerns at ease than acting like he was somehow entitled to the job the moment McNair was gone.
Glenn (Cumberland, RI)
I'm just going to assume that the Titans pass on WR out of spite. Looks like the best value at that point would be either CB or DE. If they go CB, do they feel they need a 'bigger' corner opposite Finnegan who's only 5'10"? Does that make D. Butler from UConn a more likely choice than A. Smith or DJ Moore?
Paul Kuharsky (4:32 PM)
DJ Moore isn't just small, he's tiny. To cover Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson, they are always going to want a bigger guy, all things being equal. How do we know the best value there without seeing who's gone, who's left and how the Titans have people rated?
James (Sheboygan, WI)
I don't know if this has all ready been asked, but any ideas on where Torry Holt might land?
Paul Kuharsky (4:33 PM)
Only Titans and Jaguars have shown interest as far as we know. I think he may be out there until after the draft.
Jim (LA, CA)
Any new wrinkles coming in the Titans D with Schwartz now in Detroit?
Paul Kuharsky (4:34 PM)
Fisher will be more hands on early in Cecil's tenure. Cecil will be inclined to be more aggressive, I expect, where Schwartz was generally measured.
Kevin (New York, Ny)
Any new news on the Jones Drew contract? When do you think it will get done?
Paul Kuharsky (4:35 PM)
I don't think it's anything they are worrying about during draft preparations. Blog column posted today on Jags' leadership issues, by the way.
Chase (Nashville)
If Torry Holt does sign with the Titans, what would be the pecking order? Holt, Gage, Washington? Or would it just be more of a rotational thing?
Paul Kuharsky (4:35 PM)
To be sorted out and rotational.
Mike (Washington DC)
Given how long Marvin Harrison was a Colt, is there any chance there is any "unhappiness" (read: discontent) in the Colt locker room over the team releasing him?
Paul Kuharsky (4:36 PM)
If I am a Colt, I've got faith that Polian knows what he is doing personnel wise. And how would worrying about a guy who isn't there -- who's washed up and was unaffordable -- benefit me in any way?
Mad Mike (Houston)
Paul: I still am a bit lost on why the Titans would not look at a QB somewhere in the draft. Collins is getting older and VY doesn't get it and I do not see someone like Patrick Ramsey as a solution. Why not Harrell or Bomar or another QB in the 4th round or later? Thanks.......MM
Paul Kuharsky (4:38 PM)
Two year deal for Collins, I imagine they think they can sort it out next year when they have a divorce with VY. I thought they could draft one in second half -- but as you know, Fisher said at owners meetings that third QB will be a veteran. That could change, of course.
Chris (SD)
I just read an article on ESPN that said the #1 pick is an albatross, which is highly confusing. I thought that at any given spot the team selecting had the option of deferring the pick until later, is this not the case? If that is the case then how on earth is the 15th pick more valuable than the 1st?
Paul Kuharsky (4:40 PM)
I'm not sure about deferring. But if the Lions passed until they got to 12 and then took a guy, how do you think an agent would handle those negotiations? It is an albatross -- throws you salary structure out of whack and if you miss you can't get out from under it for a long time. League needs to fix the system and make it so No. 1 is the benefit it's intended to be.
James (DC)
PS AFC SOUTH Stinks!
Paul Kuharsky (4:41 PM)
Remind me about how I came to your office, logged on to your computer and dragged you in here?
Shaun (TN)
Since everyone knows VY is a wash, and the Titans need a young qb to take over, what would you think about them going after Quinn or Anderson in Cleveland? Anderson was once a Pro-Bowler, and either would be an upgrade over Vince.
Paul Kuharsky (4:42 PM)
I don't think Anderson is any good either and I can't see the Titans making a deal for a backup QB that included giving up a pick of any value.
BLUEMAN(INDY)
Any chance the Colts pick up one of the small Sproles type backs that will be available at the end of draft this year?A return specialist and home run threat on offense would be nice.
Paul Kuharsky (4:43 PM)
Yes it would. Always a possibility I think. They thought about keeping Roby as a kick return specialist last season, but the early injuries made it impossible.
Glenn (Cumberland, RI)
Paul, I agree no one knows for sure who will be there when the Titans pick #30, but from the Combine to April 25th it's all about speculation and mock drafts. Without them you guys would have hardly anything to report on. So speculate with me. You're a blogger now, it's OK. You don't need 2 sources anymore :)
Paul Kuharsky (4:45 PM)
I'd lean corner and since you are effectively twisting my arm for a name, I'll go Darius Butler.
Bill (chicago)
ban over yet?
Paul Kuharsky (4:45 PM)
Depends if people rally with other questions. (Please do.)
Paul Kuharsky (Future)
MY HAIR GREW BACK!!!!!!!!!!!
Paul Kuharsky (4:47 PM)
How did that happen? And do machines really take over the world like in The Sarah Conner Chronicles?
Mad Mike (Houston)
Paul: I understand the Colts way has worked over the last few years, but can you see them continue to virtually ignore special teams importance, last year it seemed to bite them a bit more than in the past. Your thoughts? Thanks........MM
Paul Kuharsky (4:49 PM)
If they could have converted a third-and-2, they would have gone at least two rounds in the playoffs. Houston would not play special teams to get that far, no?
joe (detriot)
Why do teams keep their awful qbs they draft in the first round for ridiculous contracts? Joey Harrington with the lions, Alex Smith with the 49ers, Vince Young with the Titans. Shouldn't they give them less money for sucking?
Paul Kuharsky (4:51 PM)
If you've paid them a big guarantee up front, doesn't it make sense to give them some time to make sure the light doesn't come on? You'd rather throw away an investment in exchange for what, exactly? If you've got a better option, as the Titans did last year, by all means use him. But why must the guy not panning out be cut quickly?
Vince Young (Nashville)
Why do people say i suck. Ive thrown fewer picks in 3 seasons then Peyton did his rookie year. Ive won 18 games rallied my awful rebuilding franchise and everyone makes it seem like ive done nothing for the titans!
Paul Kuharsky (4:52 PM)
You committed a cardinal sin and quit on your team, which lost you tons of respect in the locker room. You can't read defenses and once everyone figured you out you became ineffective.
Ryan, SF
will either Dunta Robinson or Democo Ryans get traded before the start of the season? both are not satisfied with their current deal
Paul Kuharsky (4:54 PM)
These things have a way of getting worked out. Don't feel bad for Dunta if he has to play for $9.957 million this year.
Kevin ( New York, NY)
Do you think the Jags will trade Henderson on draft day?
Paul Kuharsky (4:54 PM)
I don't. I don't know that great offers will come pouring in either.
Sean (TR NJ)
I can see why the Colts want a WR but after that go all out D no? Isn't it always the D that needed upgrades anyway or am I confused?
Paul Kuharsky (4:55 PM)
Yeah, they need to hit DT and LB hard. But could maybe help their run game too.
ben
Peyton is is by no means old but he's not getting any younger when do the colts decide to draft his heir apparent
Paul Kuharsky (4:55 PM)
Not yet.
Paul Kuharsky (4:57 PM)
Two non-Cutler and non-Young questions and we can make the two hours and have survived. C'mon people, one final push!
Mike (San Diego)
Paul, for some reason I'm seeing the Texans at 8-8 this season. It's a good team that will never be great...you're thoughts?
Paul Kuharsky (4:58 PM)
I want to see the Texans' draft. I like their ownership, I like their coach, I like their general direction. But it can take a long time to make that last jump.
Paul Kuharsky (Future)
AFC South chats are 4 hours long here....
Paul Kuharsky (4:58 PM)
Who's the kid monitoring them?
joshua (fountain, colorado)
this is making me sick? how can you even say someone sucks and your not even playing? VY is not washed up and maybe if the Titans could put together an offense that isnt run first and throw as the 99th option in the playbook maybe you could put an offensive line that can protect a QB. why did the titans pay all that money to collins and they have a huge investment in young? cant they be smart?
Paul Kuharsky (4:59 PM)
Only smart enough to go 13-3, best in the league, with zero contribution from a guy you apparently unconditionally love.
Theodore Aloicious Stevenson (Houston)
Pro Bowl year for Schaub?
Paul Kuharsky (5:02 PM)
Manning, Brady, Roethlisberger, Rivers, Palmer. Schaub needs at least two of those to bow out to go, I predict. (And I like Schaub, I think he'll have a good year.) With the game in Miami, Young could be playing in it.
Jim (LA, CA)
Hey Paul, Thanks for hanging in there! You're devotion means something to us fans!! Keep up the good work!
Paul Kuharsky (5:02 PM)
Thanks., Happy to to it. Once in a while, not weekly!
Matt (St. Paul, MN)
What do you think the Vikings chances are of making it to the playoffs. And do you think that T-Jacks has any trade value?
Paul Kuharsky (5:04 PM)
I don't like the division at all, but you're the best it has to offer. I expect Rosenfels to outplay Jackson.
mark pouch noblesville,in
what do you think the colts do in draft?maybe a reciever?(harven or nicks?)
Paul Kuharsky (5:04 PM)
Not Harvin. He'd drive Manning crazy as he hasn't been asked to run a lot of routes in college, more going to a spot.
Braden (New Brunswick, NJ)
So Torry Holt and Marvin Harrison are both being speculated as no.2 wideouts now, the Bears seem content with calling devin hester their no. 1, why haven't they pursued either of these all time greats to mentor the young wr corps of the team and to provide some reliable hands to kyle orton, i know they feel they were burnt by mushin muhammad, but they brought him in to be a number 1 and he didn't/doesn't have anywhere close to the body of work of the other two.... why?
Paul Kuharsky (5:06 PM)
New Brunswick! I grew up in South River. If they think Holt or Harrison can play, great. You shouldn't want them to sign mentors. Coaches should be doing that. Players who can play should be doing that. Most people in the league I've talked to think Harrison is finished. Holt could still help a team like the Bears, but you'd be wise to come to terms with their philosophy on receivers.
joshua (fountain, colorado)
PK i am a Pats fan and not a titans by any means but the best team? come on thats why the steelers won the SB. look all i was asking is why they cant be smart and become balanced? either way they go but look at the money tied up at QB when they could obviously do better. with a RB corps like that you cant go wrong but you have to balance it out to. you still never answered my question about Tebow and the Texans? or maybe the Jags and Tebow?
Paul Kuharsky (5:09 PM)
Thirteen and three was, in fact, the best record in the regular season, which is obviously what I meant. Cutting or trading a guy doesn't necessarily mean you no longer have money tied up in him -- for cap purposes you may have more tied up in him in that cut or trade year. Tebow is a long way off -- they still have to chisel another speech into a wall in Gainesville.
Paul Kuharsky (5:10 PM)
Well I thought the Cutler ban saved us! Thanks for coming, I enjoyed it. See you next week for our regular scheduled hour. Please hit the mailbag on the AFC South Blog page any time. Cheers...
Paul Kuharsy (Future)
Paul Williams - Pro Bowler
Paul Kuharsky (5:10 PM)
Hilarious!
Paul Kuharsky (5:16 PM)
Cutler to the Bears is official. Don't know what they got yet.
joshua (fountain, colorado)
well said. ok its late here in iraq so one last question. how do the Jags construct their offense now? no Taylor anymore and they have a good starter in jones-drew. do they draft a quality RB this year or find a solid free agent just to give J-D a breather every now and then, since they dont have the compliment of taylor?
Paul Kuharsky (5:16 PM)
They are in love with Greg Jones and intend to give him 10 or 12 carries to offset MJD.
