Hey Matt...realistically, if the Eagles don't trade up, what OTs might be available at 21 or 28?
Matt Mosley (12:00 PM)
Yat: You lucked into the first question because it was the first one I saw. Michael Oher could certainly be there at No. 21 and Eben Britton's a guy that could possibly last until No. 28. I could still see an Andre Smith free fall, but it's hard to imagine him being there at No. 21. And I don't think Andy Reid would take him if did slip that far.
Desean Jackson is a stud wr and jason avant is a great #3. But kevin curtis, reggie brown, hank baskett are not capable. Why on earth does andy reid think they can win like this? No one player except for QB can turn teams into a contender, but I truly believe if the eagles got a #1 wr that they would make the super bowl and have a good chance of winning. Agree??
Matt Mosley (12:04 PM)
Looks like you Eagles fans showed up in force today. I don't think it's fair to say guys like Curtis and Brown aren't capable -- if you'll excuse the double negative. On the contrary, I think Kevin Curtis can be a very reliable No. 2 receiver as long as he's healthy. He was banged up quite a bit last season. I think Anquan Boldin or Braylon Edwards could certainly help, but I think the Eagles could get it done without them.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
What do you predict if the Giants don't have Plaxico for the season and what if he spends 4 games in jail and 4 on suspension?
Matt Mosley (12:06 PM)
Bob, I think the Giants will challenge for a playoff spot with or without Plaxico Burress. The running game shouldn't suffer too much with the loss of Derrick Ward and the defense should be in much bettere shape with the additions of Canty, Boley, Bernard and Brown. If he's only suspended four games, I'd look for him to return and make a big impact. In that scenario, I'd pick the Giants to win the NFC East. Without him, give me the Eagles.
Hey Matt--please tell me why the Skins can't find a decent place kicker? Their M.O. the last few years is winning or losing by three points or less. I don't understand why they don't place more importance on the kicking game (don't get me started on the punting situation--that's a whole other ball of wax). Thanks.
Matt Mosley (12:08 PM)
I know that Shaun Suisham didn't have a great season -- and I remember the kick against the Seahawks. That said, I think he can be a very reliable kicker. I think he'll reward the Redskins for sticking with them. The Redskins tried to draft a punter and they whiffed. There's a guy by the last name Sepulveda who they should've taken a couple years ago.
Chad (Encino, CA)
The Cowboys have a running back committee most teams would dream of. Do you think Jerry Jones is even remotely thinking of using one of the three backs as trade bait to move up in the draft?
Matt Mosley (12:10 PM)
Chad, Jerry will listen to any and all offers, but I'd be surprised if he moved Barber or one of the other backs. I think Jason Garrett has to figure out how to take advantage of a talented and diverse group of backs. And I think they need to put Barber in the position to be the closer again. He wasn't himself last season. I expect him to bounce back in a big way this season. And the combination of Felix Jones and Tashard Choice should scare a lot of defenses.
Jeff (Big D)
hey matt if your on with randy today give him crap. I was wondering what you think dallas might go after with there first pick
Matt Mosley (12:12 PM)
That's a given, Jeff. Today is "Tuesdays with Mosley" at 5 p.m. I'll reveal who the Cowboys are going to pick at No. 51. I'll give you a hint: He plays safety and he attended Western Michigan.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
Who's the best fit for the Giants if they decide wideout is an issue? Heyward-Bey, Nicks, Britt, or Robiskie?
Matt Mosley (12:13 PM)
They're very familiar with Britt since he played nearby. But Robiskie's the guy I'd go after. Has the football pedigree with his father being a former player and coach. Has superb hands. I think he'll be an excellent possession receiver -- and maybe more than that. I think he's the safest guy out of the ones you mentioned.
Allen (Sterling, VA)
Hey Matt, I'm assuming that Orakpo will be gone by the time the Redskins pick at #13. In that case, do you think Everette Brown would be a good pick for them? I envision him much like Orakpo, a guy who can play strong side linebacker and put his hand in the dirt on 3rd down to rush the passer from the end position.
Matt Mosley (12:15 PM)
Yeah, it's looking like Orakpo might be gone. The Redskins need to take the best player. They're not in position to start drafting on need at 13. I think they may go after someone like Oher, but you never know with this team. With only four picks, there's the chance Cousin Vinny tries to trade out of that pick and produce some more draft picks.
Who do you think wins the battle to replace Brian Dawkins, Quinton Demps or Sean Jones?
Matt Mosley (12:15 PM)
Paul Geneva NY
Hey Matt with the signing of wynn and daniels at le do you think the redskins can hold off on that position untill next year? If so do you see them drafting a player like lb cushing from USC?
Matt Mosley (12:16 PM)
I don't think the 'Skins can afford to hold off any longer. Those guys are long in the tooth. I wouldn't want to start the season with those guys as front-line players.
Luis (SB, CA)
Matt, in chance of a return of the award winning Hashmarks?
Matt Mosley (12:17 PM)
ESPN.com has asked me never to use that word in public again.
Matt, How big of an impact will the loss of the New York Giants DC be to them this year. Will the Giants stay as aggressive or can we see a different approach this year?
Matt Mosley (12:18 PM)
I think they'll have some pretty good continuity with Sheridan. I think Spagnuolo had a tremendous feel for calling a game, but this defense isn't going to fall apart without him. There's too much talent. And Coughlin does a good job of having his coaches ready to go.
Is there a more poorly constructed roster, for the money, then the Washington Redskins? (and yes, I'm even a fan!)
Matt Mosley (12:19 PM)
Dan, that's a leading question. But when you go years at a time without drafting interior linemen with premium picks, you'll end up paying for it at some point.
joe (little forest hills)
do you REALLY think berbec's is still that good? they've gone way downhill in the past 2-3 years; I've been disappointed in everything I've had there lately (except the beer biscuits, of course!) maybe i'm ordering the wrong things
Matt Mosley (12:20 PM)
It's still about the experience for me. If you can get away from the smokers, that patio's awesome on a nice Saturday morning, Beer biscuits make me forget about everything. And I like the way they do their hashbrowns.
Tommy (Miami, Fl)
Are the Cowboys hoping that Anthony Spencer can secure the sarting OLB spot oppositie of Ware?
Matt Mosley (12:22 PM)
Tommy, that's been the hope since he was taken in the first round. You're not drafting backup players when you have one of those picks. If Spencer will take the next step, people will stop reminding Jerry Jones about that Carpenter pick. That one still hurts.
Tyler (Sacramento, CA)
You sure about Delmas to Dallas? You do know his agent is Rosenhaus, right? I have a hunch the Boys are drafting Sherrod Martin from Troy. Last time they used their first pick on a Troy alum it panned out pretty well.
Matt Mosley (12:24 PM)
I like Martin because of his versatility. You can line him up against a wide receiver and not be all that scared. I don't like the fact that he's been banged up in the past, though. And they don't give a rip that it's a Rosenhaus client. Marion Barber's also a Rosenhaus guy. Stephen Jones never lets that stuff get personal...And believe it or not, Rosenhaus is pretty good at that, too.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
Have you heard anything about what kind of deal Osi and Tuck are looking for?
Matt Mosley (12:25 PM)
Tuck got a new deal right before the Super Bowl. Yes, he's probably outperformed it, but he's not the type of person who will start yipping about it. Osi Umenyiora wants to be paid like one of the best DEs in the game. The problem is that Tuck may have passed him by while he was out. He needs to have a big season.
Tom (Keansburg, NJ
Jerry Reese has said publicly that he doesn't anticpate bringing 10 rookies into camp. It leads us all to believe a trade is in the works. Your thoughts?
Matt Mosley (12:28 PM)
I wouldn't rule out a trade, but Reese certainly doesn't feel like he has to do one. He and Coughlin love creating as much competition as possible. If he has to, he'll draft some talented players and let them compete heading into camp. I think Reese will listen to anything, but he feels like the Giants are in a position of strength right now -- even with the Plax situation.
Jason (Big D)
What's the status on D-Ware's contract extension? Do you think JJ can lock up a deal before the season starts?
Matt Mosley (12:30 PM)
Jason, the two sides have been talking. I think Stephen Jones was a little sick to his stomach when he saw Al Haynesworth surpass $40 million guaranteed, but he'll get the thing done. Look for an announcement when the team's in San Antonio for training camp. I don't think the negotiation will last into the season. And I don't see it getting contentious at all. Pat Dye and Stehpen have a solid relationship.
Aaron ( Houston )
Hey Matt. Love your work. Say the gmen don't trade for a big name receiver, don't have plax, and draft a receiver like nicks or britt, will we see the giants we saw late in the season?
Matt Mosley (12:32 PM)
I think the Giants struggles late in the season were more about the wearing down of the defensive line than the absence of Plax. Now he was certainly a factor. But I think having minicamps and a full training camp without Plax would put the Giants in much better situation. At that point, guys like Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon will have a lot better idea what their roles will be.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
Are the Peters to the Eagles just people sensing the Bills inability to resign Peters and the Eagles need at tackle or is there some fact behind these rumors?
Matt Mosley (12:34 PM)
Bob, I think the Eagles would love to have Jason Peters -- at the right price. The Bills know they have a precious commodity in a Pro Bowl LT. I think Cleveland would be a lot better trade partner with Edwards than the Bills would be with Peters -- if that makes sense. I think the Bills think Peters has more value than just about anyone. So they should find a way to keep him.
What has been the problem for Bobby Carpenter? Does Dallas even want him at this point?
Matt Mosley (12:35 PM)
Dallas needs him as a nickel linebacker. But if the Dolphins or someone made a decent offer, the Cowboys would certainly listen.
Xavier ( Plano TX )
Mosley, good show on GAC yesterday...You were killing me w/ the Hansborough comparison......My question is do you think the Boys will be a run heavy team with Witten as the focus in the passing game.....I see a struggle this year with the sked and lack of depth.....
Matt Mosley (12:39 PM)
Thanks, Xavier! I don't think the schedule's something to fixate on at all. A lot of teams probably thought they had a win against the Falcons when the schedules came out for last season. On paper, the Cowboys have some favorable matchups against the woeful AFC West. And if Jason Garrett's smart (and he has an Ivy League degree), he'll build this thing around that stable of running backs. I'm told that Witten and Romo are secretly drawing up plays as we speak.
Alexander (Twin Cities)
Bobby Carpenter as a nickle cornerback? You mean nickle LB, right? If he is our nickle corner, let's mail it in already!
Matt Mosley (12:39 PM)
yes yes yes...nickel linebacker. sorry
Graham (Fairport, NY)
Matt, what is your opinion on Jason Peters as a tackle? I know he had one great year, came to camp out of shape last year, and struggled all season. His pro-bowl invite was more because of his name than his play in my opinion. I was wondering if you've seen something I didn't. I've heard that Reid likes the idea of Shawn Andrews at LT.
Matt Mosley (12:42 PM)
I think Jason Peters could be an elite left tackle over the next five or six seasons -- if someone puts a boot to his rear. I shared a breakfast table with Reid last Wednesday as he explained his OL situation. He acts like Herremans and Andrews want to move back to tackle, but I don't like that plan. After what Andrews has been through, do you really want to make him change back to playing tackle now?
Which team can compete with the NY Giants this year for the NFC East title. On paper the Giants are much improved.
Matt Mosley (12:44 PM)
From what I can tell, it's a three-team race. I certainly think the Eagles and Giants are a little bit ahead of the Cowboys. But we don't know how Dallas will react to all the locker room changes. Guys like Tank, Pacman and T.O. won't be around. Jerry's hoping for better chemistry because of that. We'll see how that translates to the field. I think it's going to be the best division in football -- especially since the Redskins may have a vastly improved defense. And it wasn't that bad to begin with last season.
Sanjay (Da Iladel, PA)
Which BEast would you take, NCAA Men's Bball Big East or NFC East? And 16 or 18 games?
Matt Mosley (12:47 PM)
I respect the work of Coach Wright and Coach Calhoun, but give me the real BEAST. And I don't think we'll see 18 regular-season games any time soon. So I'm not getting too worked over it. Don't we already have enough injuries. Will two more full-participation games help in that regard? I think not.
Larry (New York)
Hey Matt, the Skins have 5 picks, not 4..7th round compensatory pick...and before you laugh, we drafted horton in the 7th rd.
Matt Mosley (12:48 PM)
Good point, Larry. Forgot about the compensatory. And yes, I remember the Horton pick. Off the top of my head, I think it was around 249. That's about the only thing Vinny can hang his hat on from that draft. But there's still time.
TJ (Boothwyn, Pa)
How does this draft class compare to previous draft classes in the last 5 years? It seems that there are 35-40 very good players, but is devoid of 3-5 can't miss prospects.
Matt Mosley (12:50 PM)
TJ: I need a little more time on this one. I think Curry and Smith are as close as you'll find to can't-miss projects. Outstanding, outstanding football players. And the thing I love is that neither player was highly recruited coming out of high school. Smith was a lanky tight end and Curry was just looking for a good moderate Baptist school. Now they're the safest picks in the draft. Send an e-mail to me and I'll answer this question more fully.
benevolent anarchist, Maryland
Matt. Great job covering the Beast! Any chance Marcus Washington resigns with the Skins for the vet min.? Have you heard of any other teams expressing interest in Marcus? The Saints, perhaps?Any chance Marcus Washington resigns with the Skins for the vet min.? Have you heard of any other teams expressing interest in Marcus? The Saints, perhaps?
Matt Mosley (12:51 PM)
Dearest Benevolent: Washington has too much pride to sign for the vet minimum.
Al (Waldorf, MD)
Matt, any chance the cowboys make a play for Mike Vick as QB/WR?
Matt Mosley (12:52 PM)
I've been told point blank by a high-ranking member of the organization that this will NEVER happen.
Chris (Marquette, MI)
I realize Dallas needs to lock up Ware first, but are they still in the hunt for Peppers?
Matt Mosley (12:53 PM)
Never were in the hunt.
Matt New York
I'm thinking the Giants go LB at the 29th pick. What do you think and what are the chances that one of the USC LB's falls there?
Matt Mosley (12:53 PM)
I think the Giants take the best player there. If that's an OT, so be it. Wouldn't shock me to see them take Britton.
Josh (Winston Salem, NC)
The Professional: Some people have suggested Torry Holt to Dallas is a good move, but I don't see it happening. What do you think?
Matt Mosley (12:54 PM)
There's not much interest right now. They want to develop these young guys like Miles Austin.
Greg Washington,DC [via mobile]
Matt with all the questions about this years picks(none of us nows who will be great, good, or a "bust"..Can I have your honest opinion?Which player out the whole draft do you think wil great, which player think will be good, and which player do you think will be a bust?
Matt Mosley (12:55 PM)
I'm biased because I just spent a ton of time with him, but I think Jason Smith will be "great," I think Brian Robiskie will be "really good" and I think any of these first-round QBs could be a HUGE bust.
Bob (Fairport, NY)
Is Michael Boley the answer to stopping those little HB option pass routes that burned Pierce at the end of the season?
Matt Mosley (12:56 PM)
Bob, that's why he's there. Now I'm cutting you off. You've snuck in like 27 questions. I'm onto you pal!
Matt...why isn't anybody mentioning the Eagles as a potential destination for Julius Peppers. It's already apparent that he's going to hold out if he's not moved, and the Eagles has 12 draft picks. If they can't land Boldin why not bolster a defense already among the best in the league.
Matt Mosley (12:57 PM)
They don't want to pay him what he's asking for. He'll want somewhere in the $30-35 mil guaranteed range. It's not happening in Philly.
Rachel (City of Angles)
Matt, why didn't Sinorice Moss pan out? What's the knock on him?
Matt Mosley (12:58 PM)
He's just inconsistent. He's shown flashes, but he doesn't get enough separation for an alleged speedster and it's not like he's made significant contributions on special teams. He's tiny and doesn't get any separation. Other than that, he's fine!
Josh (Winston Salem, NC)
Andre Smith is definitely the best tackle on film. I think with a good coach that will make him work, he will be an incredible player and a mid round steal. Thoughts?
Matt Mosley (1:00 PM)
I don't want a player who needs a "good coach that will make him work." If I'm about to guarantee a kid $20 mil or so, I'll take my chances with someone who's a self-starter. I'd take Smith and Monroe over Smith any day. Maybe even Oher and Britton. I'd be scared to death of this kid flaking on me.
Jake (VA Beach)
Can Manningham reach back to his sophomore year in Michigan and become a NFL star?
Jason: (Calgary, AB)
Hey Matt. Who are the "mostly under the radar" players from the Beast to look out for this season? Players who fans outside of the division might not be terribly familiar with going but who are poised for big seasons. I say Quinton Mikell from the Eagles leads the pack.
Matt Mosley (1:05 PM)
I like this question, Jason. And folks, we're now approaching 550 questions. I need you to show up on time next week so I'll have a better chance of getting to you. Redskins: I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I think Devin Thomas will be a difference maker for Jason Campbell next season Giants: You're going to love Danny Ware. Cowboys: Everyone's talking about Brooking and Olshansky, but a kid named Stephen Bowen will break through in '09. Eagles: Quintin Mikell's a good one, although a lot of folks already know about him. There's a little CB from Texas Tech named Joselio Hanson who will have five interceptions in '09. And I like the kid Cole on the O-line. Really stepped up. I didn't give him the credit he deserved. You guys have been great. I anxiously await our time together next week. Sort of.
