Mark (NYC, NY)
First of all, congrats on the magazine, the website and now these Lax events--you've certainly come a long way. I've been a subscriber since the old days (10 yrs ago now?!?!--wow) when it was black and white newspaper being sent out via first class mail. Anywaaaaay, my questions was about the event itself. Are fans going to be able to go out to the parking lot(s) btween games? As we all know, the tailgate is huge part of lacrosse events and this being the first one so close to NYC I know there will be some great action in the parking lot--I assume that IL has not plays to stifle everyone's fun.
John Jiloty (1:03 PM)
You can absolutely go out to the parking lot between games. I've heard from tons of people that will get there early to start firing it up (including a few notable SU lax alums). Should be a great day of lacrossse AND tailgating so get there early, set up the grill and get the sticks and chairs out.
Virginia-North Carolina. Who ya got?
John Jiloty (1:06 PM)
I'm sitting next to Quint Kessenich right now and we were just discussing whether Virginia would suffer a letdown after playing a six-hour game last Saturday. I think it's definitely possible. I feel like Carolina might be finding their stride coming off that Hopkins wins last week.
John (Clemmons, NC)
Will the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College ever contend for any kind of championship?
John Jiloty (1:09 PM)
Why not? I have heard that we should expect more DII growth in the Southeast, which should help Lees-McRae. I've also heard the Charlotte area's lacrosse scene is growing, and that should help Lees-Mcae and all of those relatively local schools. Georgia high school lacrosse is growing too -- check the crowd for ND-Loyola earlier this year.
agreed, IL growth has been staggering - perhaps in parity with growth that lacrosse is experiencing itself, congrats - what are your views on some of the lesser leagues in D1? The MAAC, etc - seems like there arent clear-cut favorites - who will get the AQs?
John Jiloty (1:11 PM)
As my Giants Stadium press box neighbor Quint Kessenich just said, it looked like Canisius but now it's looking more like Siena. Pretty shocked Canisius has dropped so quickly this year. I thought Adam Jones was going to have a HUGE year and really lead them to a great season. MAAC will come down to the tournament I assume.
Syracuse-Princeton. Who ya got?
John Jiloty (1:16 PM)
I'm going to take Syracuse. They came into the Loyola game with a few question marks -- third attackman and face-off man. The fourth-quarter comeback displayed the answers. Dan Hardy stepped up big-time when he bumped down to attack. And Gavin Jenkinson dominated draws against the Greyhounds in that pivotal period. I've heard mixed opinions on whether the UVA-UNC or Princeton-Syracuse games will be better at the Inside Lacrosse Big City Classic.
What is the latest on Chris Boland? How is he doing health wise?
John Jiloty (1:20 PM)
He's healthy. Came back to earth a bit after ripping Virginia for 6 and 1 when he put up one goal against Carolina last week. Quint says he's healthy and looking like his old self in high school. Very nifty, opportunistic player that will be very important to JHU down the stretch. Seems like Hop does this every year but they could use a win over Albany tomorrow before the huge April 11 tilt against Maryland at the Smartlink Day of Rivals in Baltimore (with the Army-Navy game).
How important is Patrick Moran to Coach Meade's team?
John Jiloty (1:27 PM)
Very. HUGE middie that can be a tough matchup, especially when you factor in Mirabito and Paul on attack. Navy comes off a big win over Gtown. Anxious to see who comes out of that Maryland game tonight. Another plug: both teams play at the Smartlink Day of Rivals April 11 in Baltimore.
Jiloty, Who do you and quint think is the player of the year right now? Also, what's quint going to wear on ESPNU for the games tomorrow?
John Jiloty (1:31 PM)
we were texting back and forth on this very matter on the trip up to Giants Stadium today. I gotta think Kenny Nims, Garrett Billings, Brandon Corp, Matt Abbott, Grant Catalino, Max Seibald and maybe Scotty Rodgers from ND are in the top mix right now. Could make a good case for Shamel Bratton and Danny Glading from Virginia too. If they go undefeated the Cavs might get two of five finalists. QK tomorrow: brown-purple combo. pinstripes. It's HD, which he says impacts his wardrobe. He says working with Joe Beninati steps up his fashion game. Joe B might be the best-dressed dude in broadcasting.
What's the fallout from the Virginia-Maryland seven-OT game?
John Jiloty (1:35 PM)
Great question Bobbo. Unfortunate that that game was impacted by an officiating error. Here's what's happened this week: Warren Kimber, who oversees the lacrosse referees, has met with UM coach Dave Cottle and the refs and has apologized on behalf of the refs. UM's athletic department has submitted the tape to the ACC for review, and to make the league aware that the mistake was potentially game and season changing. Bottom line: a big problem in lacrosse is getting enough quality referees, especially outside traditional areas. We need to fix this ASAP.
Rob (Long Island, NY
Who do you like in the Hofstra-Delaware game and what are your thoughts so far on Hofstra goalie Andrew Gvozden?
John Jiloty (1:38 PM)
I gotta like Hofstra. Pride were Quint's pick in preseason and Dave Ryan hyped them up on InsideLacrosse.com last week, saying they could be the next final four team (hopefully that's not the kiss of depth). Andrew has made big strides since his first game, and it's gotta help having big bro Michael at Hopkins. I've known Mike Colleluori and the whole family for a few years now and it's great to see Worm having a big senior year. Seth Tierney is doing a fantastic job in just his second year as head coach. Bright future ahead for him and the Pride.
What is Joe Beninati wearing tomorrow on ESPNU?
John Jiloty (1:43 PM)
from the man himself: charcoal gray/soft tan suit, gold pin-striped shirt, solid gold tie. I can imagine the entire ensemble is worth more than my car.
Have you heard anything on Cody Jamieson getting reinstated by the NCAA?
John Jiloty (1:46 PM)
No, which amazes me. I am shocked that this thing is still dragging on. He's told Anne McNamara of CitrusTV and Inside Lacrosse that he'll stick around if he doesn't get eligible. But he could be the top pick in the NLL Draft, so that could change. I have no idea what the deal is with the NCAA on this one. At this point it's dicey adding in a brand-new player at least 10 games into the season. But I saw him play at OCC and was blown away with how quick his feet are for a big guy. He was the NLLInsider.com Junior A Player of the Year last summer, which is no small feat.

Quint, you have any memories of watching Giants games as a kid?
John Jiloty (1:50 PM)
Quint: first game in Giants Stadium was mid-80s, St. Louis Cardinals and OJ Anderson. Most memorable game was LT's last game when he got hurt against the Packers I believe. I was a huge Lawrence Taylor fan. My agent represents a bunch of Giants so I get the scoop. I'm a Giants-Ravens fans but when they played in the Super Bowl I found myself rooting for Baltimore. I always dreamed they would play lacrosse in Giants Stadium and people used to laugh at me. Ideal spot for the national championship. Tomorrow's Inside Lacrosse Big City Classic is a good tryout.
If you had to pick your final four today, who would it be?
John Jiloty (1:57 PM)
Never had this hard of a time picking at this point of the season. Cuse, Virginia have separated themselves from the pack. I like Princeton as well. And for the fourth spot it could be anyone out of Hopkins, Maryland, Duke, Cornell, Hofstra, UMBC, Notre Dame, maybe even UMass (Quint just brought that to my attention so I'll credit him for that one). I agree with Q, who says the gap between SU-UVA and everyone else shrunk last year. But for a fourth spot I'll take Maryland.
Lee (Boca Raton, FL.)
How many tickets sold yet? How are the St. Andrews (Boca location)recruits being seen fior next year? Coppersmith to JHU, etc. - how are they viewed by your staff as having an impact? Is Wyatt Meltzer from St. Andrews getting playing time at Virginia?
John Jiloty (2:05 PM)
We've sold around 18K ticks but I haven't gotten an update today. I have talked to a lot of people who are coming to Giants Stadium tomorrow that have not bought tickets yet. Guarantee the best seats by going to BigCityClassic.com and buying ticks today. Bernie Susskind (goalie) going to Dartmouth is pretty highly touted according to our recruiting expert Geoff Shannon. Melzer's played in five games so far (half) for the Cavaliers. Melzer's is on a deep defense for Virginia right now so look for him to emerge more in a few years when Ryan Nizolek and Ken Clausen are gone. Matt Kelly and Mike Timms graduate this year so those are two big spots to fill in 2010 for the Cavs.
How do you think the loss of captain Spencer Van Schaack will affect Cuse going forward?
John Jiloty (2:08 PM)
Tough one. I like the way he plays -- really tough presence on the field so you lose that. D-middie was a big spot to fill for SU and Van Schaack was really stepping up. Look for freshman Kevin Drew (IL #9 recruit coming in) to step up big-time. Love the way he plays -- he'll be a big-time player, really fast and moves very well. Matt Abbott is a machine and can play all day, so don't worry about him having to play more defensive middie. He's a cyborg. Jovan Miller gets more runs on D as well. But those guys play wings on face-offs too, so that's a lot of lacrosse. Mike Morrison from SU just rolled into the press box at Giants Stadium and he says Joe Coulter will get more runs on D as well so watch for him. SU just rolled onto the field here. That dark blue looks like black from a mile up in the press box.
Cowboy Ron (Piston, PA)
Hey Jiloty, love your work on Inside LAX. Was wondering what your background is in playing this great sport.
John Jiloty (2:17 PM)
Never played a lick of lacrosse. Was Sports Editor at the Daily Orange when I was at Cuse and got into the sport that way. Proof that any moron can learn something if you just ask enough questions. And while my Xs and Os knowledge isn't as sharp as, say, a four-time All-American like Quint, I think I've learned enough to not screw up too much. By the way, Roy Simmons III just showed some nice quickness leaping out of the way of an errant shot. Nice feet for the big guy...
John Jiloty (2:22 PM)
Al right well I got Syracuse's Kyle Fetterly and Quint chewing my ear off right now so I'm going to check out. Everyone come April 4 to Giants Stadium for the IL Big City Classic (bigcityclassic.com) and April 11 to Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium for the Smartlink Day of Rivals (dayofrivals.com). Keep on keepin on.
