Ken Moll (4:00 PM)
Fella's, LOT's to talk about today with the Huge trade between DA' Bears and the Broncos- Lets go !!
Dakota Medford, Wisconsin
Hey Ken with the Bears addition of Jay Cutler. Right now who's the better quarterback in the North, Aaron Rodgers or Cutler
Ken Moll (4:02 PM)
Dakota, Wow, that's a good question but I'm going to go with Rodgers due to the fact he is in a more productive (passing ) attack and has been in it for several years with a solid starting season in 2008. Yes, I do believe that Cutler has a bit more talent but in the systems they are in I would go with Aaron.
Matt (Iowa)
I realize you're going to be getting bombard with Cutler questions, but I'm going to throw this out there anyways. Isn't it possible that Cutler's stats will go way down now that he is out of Shanny's system and moved into a run, run, run system? I understand his potential, but instead of throwing to Schefler, Marshall, Royal and Stokely, he gets Olson (probaly an upgrade) Hester, Rashied Davis and Earl Bennett. His recieving corp is a huge drop off from what he is used to and he won't get bailed out from bad decisions because these recievers can barely catch the ball. Plus, if Forte hits a soph slump, he's pretty much worse off now then before. And who was the last QB Lovie Smith groomed that actually did anything. Hopefully I eat my words.
Ken Moll (4:05 PM)
Matt, Point well taken. I'm sure that Da' Bears needed Cutler more than he needed a team like Chicago and this could backfire on Cutler. If his numbers significantly go down it may hurt his career and I think he had as good a chance to win a championchip in Denver as he does in Chicago- Let's see how it unfold over the next couple of seasons--
Steiny (NYC)
Will Kyle Orton be the starting QB in Denver?
Ken Moll (4:08 PM)
Steiny, That's not automatic but I would say he would be. Orton does have talent and has won a few games during his short career. He will have more talent to throw to but not the defense and this will put more on his shoulders to perform well. It was a smart move by the Broncos to acquire a veteran signal calle rthat has won games in the league as well as pick up draft picks.
Jake (Chicago)
Why do you assume the Bears system will remain the same now that they have Cutler? It has to open up some.
Ken Moll (4:09 PM)
Jake, Yes it will open up some but I don't see it being as pass friendly as what Shanahan had in Denver. Believe me his numbers are likely to go down.
Steiny (NYC)
What is the latest on Gus Frerotte? Is he going to St. Louis?
Ken Moll (4:10 PM)
Steiny, I know that Spagnuolo would love to have Frerotte in St. Louis and they are making a strong play form him but nothing solid yet.
Mike (San Diego)
Ken, since the Giants got rid of Plaxico, do you think they know something legal-wise about his situation? Are talking years in prison here?
Ken Moll (4:12 PM)
Mike, The Giants are smart to wipe their hands clean of Plaxico, with all his problems. Yes he is talented and really helped Eli but it's not worth the trouble. Yes, there is likely more to come on Plaxico's situation in the coming weeks--
Ray (Detroit)
Since Jay Cutler is heading to Chicago, does that mean that the lions have to draft Matthew Stafford?
Ken Moll (4:15 PM)
Ray, The Lions Brass is playing it close to the vest (as they should ) but it's not certain they take Stafford. Often times those closed door meetings have different opinons of what directions they need to take.
Nouri (Greeley, CO)
Where will Broncos end up with No.12 and 18 draft picks??
Ken Moll (4:17 PM)
Nouri, Not sure but would think they might go defense with both picks (sure up the D-line) or if they can get a Back they are sold on they may use one of those picks to help their ground attack.
Darien Ohio
why did the bears give so much for Jay when their recievers probabaly won't work well with him?
Ken Moll (4:19 PM)
Darien, I do think the Broncos got the better end of this deal. Yes, If Cutler wins a championchip and is a huge producer in the next two years I might feel different but at first glance I see Denver coming out on top after all is said and done !
Mike (San Diego)
Ken, all offseason the Bears fans have been begging for them to do something...they do the Cutler thing, and I think they got fleeced in the deal. That's a lot to give up for a guy who shouldn't have made the pro bowl last year. Who do you think won in this trade?
Ken Moll (4:20 PM)
Mike, DENVER in a big way !!!
Ryan (Madison, WI)
True or false: The only reason Cutler acted the way he did was because he had been hoping for an excuse to force a trade out of Denver.
Ken Moll (4:23 PM)
Ryan, That's a good chance of being true but not a smart move by Cutler. He has some nice weapons to throw to in Denver as well as a smart (innovative ) young coach in McDaniels. Being looked at in possible trades is just the way it works. Should Jason Campbell sulk in Washington right now. I think that Cutler and his agent was 90% at fault !!
Adam (Chicago)
I really don't get the majority of analysts saying that Denver got the better deal. Think of it this way, if Cutler was in this draft, he'd be the sure fire #1 pick, ahead of everyone. So to move from 18 to 1, cost a 3rd and a 1 next year. And you get a 5th back. Oh and Orton, but the Bears don't need him anymore.
Ken Moll (4:25 PM)
Adam, That's not a bad way of looking at it but if you have a PLayer that just DOESN'T WANT TO BE THERE, it's best to get rid of him NOW- Yes Chicago got them a very nice young QB but not the second coming and Denver got plenty in return!
John (Spokane WA)
So, i know its Jay Cutler Day, but Who are your early favorites to win in the NFC, perhaps give me your early Division winners?
Ken Moll (4:27 PM)
John, It's tough to pick against the Giants in the East, I'll go with the Vikings in the NFC North. I'll go with the Cardinals (though I think the Rams will suprize some people) and it's between the Panthers and the Falcons in the South / I'll go with the Panthers
Kev NYC
Is it fair to assume the Giants cut Plax now because they have an offer in place to obtain Braylon or Boldin and will most likely do so shortly?
Ken Moll (4:31 PM)
Kev, I'm sure the Giants have something going but I think the whole time (since Plaxico's problems) they wanted to get rid of him . They just said all the right things (we stand by him, etc.) until they could make the move. Getting Edwards would be huge for the Giants !!
Paul (Philly)
Giants in the East? Did you see Eli without Plaxico? What a sham of a QB he is without his big receiver...not to mention, they will miss Ward.
Ken Moll (4:34 PM)
Paul, They are always very well coached and did you see the stable of backs they have as well as one of the most under rated offensive lines in the league. Believe me , they will get someone for Eli to throw to . It's not that I disagree about Eli not being in the same catagory as his brother but he can play !!
carlos l. (Miami, FL)
Ken, do you think the Dolphins will move up to select COnnor Barwin after they pic ROn Brace with the #25 pick?
Ken Moll (4:36 PM)
Carlos, I obiously haven't bee in their draft meetings but I would say this group (Jeff Ireland, Bill Parcells) isn't going to trade up too much unless they are really sold on a particular player. Ireland and his staff has done their home work and will likely be patient most of the draft -
Ken Moll (4:40 PM)
Jeff, Come on now, I said that Cutler is a fine QB , I just don't see him putting the numbers up in Chicago as he did in Denver. Again, when a player doesn't want ot be someplace (a, la Chad Johnson) that team needs to move him or the chemistry is awful. How would it have been if Cutler ended up staying after all of this? As soon as there was a tough stretch, it would have been a very poor locker room , etc. -- The Broncos did very well to get what they did for Cutler. Just one mans opinon !
Jeff, Mpls
At some point it sounded like the Vikes were right in on the mix for Cutler, but they backed off. That has convinced me that Childress is sold on Tjack or Rosenfels. If they both struggle early, do you see the Vikes firing Childress for not ever addressing the QB position?
Ken Moll (4:43 PM)
Jeff, I think the Vikings front offcie and coaching staff are going with an excellent running game and excellent defense and hopefully a solid manager of the game to get to the post season and beyond. It's just a philosophy that it looks like they are taking . Almost like Parcells did when with the Giants. (that same formula)
Randy (Utah)
So, what do you think the Redskins are doing to try and convince Jason C. that they were never serious in trading him? or do you think they are still looking at trade possibilities?
Ken Moll (4:46 PM)
Randy, I would say no to trading Campbell. I'm sure Cutler seemed like a "sexy" trade for the Skins but not sure they would go after anyone else at this point - Most NFL players know that it can happen to just about anyone (get traded) that's why Cutler being so stubborn may come back to haunt him.
Alex (Ft. Wayne)
Will Orlando Pace be able to stay healthy all three years in Chicago and hopefully help any younger guys on the O-line?
Ken Moll (4:48 PM)
Alex, Pace was one of the best Left Tackles I ever scouted coming out of college and if healthy could help a club but his durability is a huge ? for me.
Mac, Colorado Springs,CO
Instead of moving up too get Sanchez, do you think the Broncos could draft Josh Freeman?
Ken Moll (4:51 PM)
Mac, That's a thought. I saw Freeman play live this past year and he has a ton of talent - That could be a thought process for Xanders and McDaniels. This Denver staff (coaches and front office decision makers) are smart , talented people - I'm sure they have a good game plan-
Allen (houston)
Ken. could the texans actually take an offensive player at 15, like wells or maclin or even oher. THANKS
Ken Moll (4:54 PM)
Allen, Yes they could take an offensive player with that pick. I know they need help defensively but they won't pass up the best player that's available unless the grades on both players are very close.
Jared (Denver CO)
Ken, thanks for the great chat! I have a feeling the Broncos do everything in their power next year to draft Colt McCoy. He would be the perfect QB for McD and our new system. He is the most accurate QB in college FB history, he is smart and has great athletic ability. Or is Sanchez the better fit. What do you think?
Ken Moll (4:57 PM)
Jared, Yes Colt would fit nicely in McDainels offense but who is to say they can get him. Lot's can change over the course of a year (draft status, etc.)- Again, No one wanted to see Cutler go the way he did but when it was clear he wanted out, the best thing was get as much as possible for him (not trade him within the division) and move on - GREAT for DENVER !
Nick (Chicago)
Cutler's season records since high school: 2-9 and 5-6 at Vandy, 2-3 at the end of 2005, 7-9 in '06 and 8-8 in '07. He's got a strong arm, but so does Grossman, and he's made a Pro Bowl, but so did Derek Anderson. Why so much hype?
Ken Moll (4:59 PM)
Nick, That's not an observation that many have made, but GOOD one. I do believe that Jay Cutler is a fine young quarterback but there is something to be said for WINNING , and winning alot (championchip) He really has never done that !!
Ken Moll (5:02 PM)
Well fella's , we can go on for ever about this Cutler deal and it's fun to throw around the "but if's" for now ---- Let's see how this unfolds in 2009 and 2010- Then we can really see what happened in early April--
Ken Moll (5:02 PM)
Have a great weekend !!
