hey gang, we're chatting live with you for the entire 3-hour show today with Dana and Jay... Here are our 1st down topics to weigh in on: 1-who wins the NCAA title tonight and why? 2-who's in the World Series this year? 3-which are you looking forward to more: NCAA Championship or Opening Day in baseball???
Dana Jacobson (9:39 AM)
good morning!! I've got a diet coke and some oatmeal and am doing a pretape marathon so I should be with you for a good amount of the show. Yes, behind the scenes look, we have to pretape some guests b/c of time issues. Off to catch up with eric montross, back with you all in a bit!
James Howell (Indianapolis)
Though Michigan State is the "home team" and they are deeper than Lake Michigan, UNC is crazy good around the perimeter, and that is hard to stop.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
OK now you guys are just messing with me. Are you expanding to two chats per week or nothing on Wednesday?
Moderator (10:00 AM)
today's a special day, Johnny, but we may soon be chatting EVERY day...stay tuned
Chase (Greenfield Ohio)
The Tar Heels Are Gonna Win It All Tonight Baby I Tell Yeah What Hansbrough And Lawson Are Gonna Light It Up And Bring Home The Title GO TAR HEELS
Chris (Lakeland Florida)
With the seeming mismatch in the title game I've pretty much lost interest (this has nothing to do with my bracket being destroyed 2 weekends ago either) but even if it were UNC/UCONN, opening day of MLB should be a national holiday (this has nothing to do with my Braves currently having the best record in all of baseball either)
Matthew Harriman- Eden Prairie MN
Too much Lawson and talent for the Spartans to handle. The tar heels win by more the 15
Thomas (Lake Geneva, Wisconsin)
Who said the Big Ten was weak, MSU beats back to back Big East one seeds. Go GREEN!!! Korie Lucious and Travis Walton will bring the title back to Lansing.
Paul E. (Scranton, Pa.)
If Michigan St. wins, how do you think Penn State feels after winning the NIT and beating the Spartans on the road?
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Every day, huh? That can be a good thing but then again it would mean five times the NBA chat. Clearly no need for that (I kid because I don't care).
Moderator (10:13 AM)
Johnny's a little grouchy this morning
Rocco (Old Forge PA)
Come on Skip. You've been hatin on Carolina since round two and they've been proving you wrong ever since, abd they are going to it one more time.
Nick - Cleveland, OH
Moving past the NCAA Championship. It's Opening Day! Do you think that Cliff Lee will be able to repeat his Cy Young season and help lead the Tribe back to the Post-Season?
Tim (Auburn,Al)
I agree the NCAA game isnt gonna be close im looking foreward to baseball's opening day there will be better games even though possibly the closest best "true baseball" game has been postponed
Edwin; Amarillo, Texas
With the genius of Izzo and the role players he has, no doubt we'll see an upset 2night
Ron (Jackson,WI)
The Braves?? What is skip thinking..Yankees over Dodger
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
C'mon now, mod. Anyone who follows the First Take chat knows that I am not a fan of the National Boredom Association. The season is too long, there aren't enough really good teams, and everyone except for the Knicks pretty much makes the playoffs. Heck, it takes them like 2 1/2 months of playoffs just to determine a champion!
Kevin (Detroit, Michigan)
Bummer... Opening day in some cases will have to be postponed by the darn snow and rain. In Detroit there's enough snow to mess up the Tigers today, but hopefully they still play. I was planning on an opening day celebration today, but half of the gsmes I want to see are postponed. I see that the Rays and R. Sox will be postponed and same with theb W. Sox game. Which others have been postponed for today?
Moderator (10:24 AM)
always wondered why they don't mandate all the opening week's games played in warm weather and domes..we go through this every year
Todd (Louisville, KY)
NCAA championship vs MLB? No contest. I'll take the season's biggest game over one of 162 any and every day of the week.
Ken, Ohio
Skip finally showing one of my teams some love. Should I be worried? Go BRAVES!!!
Brian (MD)
as a lifelong Yankee fan, who was born and raised in NY before my job moved me down south, i am heartbroken at the new Yankee stadium, it doesn't have history or even look like the old one...how sad
Moderator (10:27 AM)
Brian...Jay took a tour there on Friday...he would disagree with you on that...
Moderator (10:27 AM)
in fact, Brian, stick around, Jay's tour of Citi Field and Yankee Stadium come up later in the show
Steve-O - San Angelo, Tx
When was the last time a tournament team won every game so easily? You cant defend the heels, you have to simply outscore them. The spartans dont have that kind of firepower. Heels by 15 tonight
Dana Jacobson (10:33 AM)
steve-o, spread is 7 or 7.5 for what it's worth. And i'm not sure unc has faced a defense as agressive and as able to adjust, show different looks as the spartans.
chris nac,tx
UNC better blow otu Michigan St. If its close in the second half Izzo will outcoach Roy to win the game.
Dana Jacobson (10:34 AM)
chris, i'll say this much. msu has to keep it close to get the win like they did against uconn
efosa (st.louis,MO)
well first of the tar heels are going to win no doubt about that, secondly,i am looking forward to that game, not a huge baseball fan and lastly, dana is one cute chick!!
Dana Jacobson (10:34 AM)
efosa thanks for making my morning. Don't count msu out so fast - best rebounding team out there. they may need all parts clicking but they can do it
Andrew, East Lansing
Dana I read an article by Mark Schlabach about the fans in Ann Arbor are now rooting for MSU. So my question to Dana is, where do you stand?
Dana Jacobson (10:36 AM)
andrew, I said it on air friday. Posted it on facebook (and took a lot of heat for it) and should have done a tweet - I'm going for the spartans. Go green. B/f people say bandwagon jumper, im not a spartan now but I want to see them win...for Izzo and for the state. Even I can admit that! And yes, I usually would root against em, you know um fans, we can be obnoxious...this year just feels different
Rogersville. TN [via mobile]
tonight is all about the ncaa championship game, then this week is all about the Masters! The MLB season is here for awhile, so golf rules!
Eric Ray Petoskey Michigan
How can you not say the ncaa tourny championship is more exciting than baseballs opening day? Baseball is a lopsided joke how can I get pumped for a sport with no salary cap. Go Reds. Even though they don't have a shot. Is It Football Season Yet? Go Buckeyes.
Tom, Pottsown PA
I'm sorry Skip I gotta disagree with you on that one, seeing Charlie Manuel raise the championship banner at the bank last night brought tears, Its all about baseball
Christopher (San Antonio)
I'm a senior at UT San Antonio, and was anticipating staying home from school to watch the Red Sox, willing to miss the one class I have on Mondays. Let's play two tomorrow so I can justify missing three classes to watch the Sox!
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
I'll miss the old Yankee Stadium but am excited to see the new one. I think it was the right move for the Yankees but don't think the right price tag. As for Citi Field, I hear they have 1,100 obstructed view seats. Can they do anything right in Flushing?
Dana Jacobson (10:38 AM)
Eric, I'm sort of on the fence. When I lived somewhere where I could go to a game I would have said opening day unless my team was playing in the tourney. Now with the ny teams and boston a couple hours away, I'm not so sure.
John Madden
Actually Dana, Michigan State doesn't have to keep it close to win, they have to score more points. You score more points than the other guys, you win, because that's how you win games. BOOM!
Dana Jacobson (10:38 AM)
John, kind of like when you do your telestration on the tv...im pretty sure people followed and knew exactly what I meant. Tell Al hi
Moderator (10:38 AM)
Johnny, its the new Yankee STadium that actually has the obstructed view seats...Jay toured in Friday...his review of both new parks is coming up in the show
O.C. (Washington, DC)
I agree with Rob. Baseball is our national pastime, football is our national passion. We still pay attention to the numbers in baseball and their historical significance. Not the case in football. And on the darker side, we make a trmendous deal (as it should be made) over performance enhancing drugs in baseball but barely a word on the use of these same enhancers in a sport that is much more physical and dangerous in football.
Dana Jacobson (10:39 AM)
OC, I like your point. Didn't think of it that way.
Danny Mt. Pleasant, Mi.
Rob Parker should of skipped school and learned more about basketball after what he said about Tom Izzo
Dana Jacobson (10:41 AM)
I'm with you Danny. I told him last week in the debate. Izzo is not overrated, there's something to be said for consistency especially when guys leave after a year or two.
Andy Johnson City TN [via mobile]
Masters week os much better than eighty % of the MLB season. The World Series and playoffs are a little better.
Dana Jacobson (10:41 AM)
andy, I'll give you masters weekend being special but truthfully, i don't care about it till thursday when they tee off
Chase(Greenfield Ohio)
Yeah Jhon They Do Have To Score More Points But There Is Such Thing Called DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS If U Have Good D And Shoot The Ball Well You Will Win Simple As That And Hansbrough Is One Heck Of A Defensive Player And Lawson Can Light It Up From Three I See UNC Winning
Dana Jacobson (10:42 AM)
Chase thanks for the support, but technically yes the winning team has to score more points.
Oaks (ny)
NCAA is BORING! Its time for Baseball baby! Time for the New York's to dominate and down Philly and Boston!
Juice Evans (Warrenton, NC)
Baseball......z...z..z..z..z..... I would rather watch professional thumb wrestling than have to sit through a whole baseball game.
John AL
I'm so glad to hear the Braves being talked about again!! It never is mentioned but the Braves represent not just Atlanta, but the whole South. I can't wait to visit Turner field!
Moderator (10:43 AM)
pro thumb wrestling...hmmmm...if we get a groundswell of support for this...maybe we can get Skip and Rob to thumb wrestle and boost our ratings?? anyone interested???
Dana Jacobson (10:43 AM)
The whole south???? Florida has a few teams as does Texas right? Then again I'm a northerner so what do i know
Paul (Queenz)
to the mod, Citi has obstructed viel seats as well. I was there, left field seats miss about 20 feet of the action and theres also some obstructions in the field level area where stair rails and support beams are also in the way.
John (Crystal Lake,IL)
I woke up at 6am not cause I had work, and my college courses don't start till 1pm this afternoon, which I will be ditching for one of the better days in sports. I'm happy to be a sports fan and even happier to show love for my whitesox, who's game was postponed due to weather. I have had this date marked on my calendar as soon as it was released, but weather has plagued baseball this time of the year yet again. So why isn't baseball playing the majority of its games in warmer weather areas in our nation or play in stadiums with domes. Is MLB that ignorant??? Hey Jay Cutler and go Mich St.
Moderator (10:44 AM)
brutal...Jay still gives both new stadiums a home run overall...can't beat a nice new stadium
Dana Jacobson (10:44 AM)
John, good for you! Opening day and the world series always some of the worst weather when all eyes are on baseball
Moderator (10:45 AM)
2nd down topic: Cavs embarrassed on Friday night in Orlando, beat the Spurs yesterday. Should the Cavs be relieved or concerned?
Jonathan Trenton,Ohio
I think that Carolina better ratchet up the defensive side of their plan of action, and make sure the 3 ball is falling for them and not trying to go to the well too many times. Love the show, Go Wolverines!!!!
Derrick Dayton,Ohio
Does Skip really not like Lebron,or does he make the comments he make because he knows he will get alot of responce from fans
Jay Crawford (10:47 AM)
answering right now....
Michael (Dekalb, Il)
Michigan St. is a really interesting team to watch. I'm an avid fan of UNC, but it's hard not to want to root for Izzo and the Spartans because of how they play and what they have done with what they have.
Chase (Greenfield Ohio)
Hey Dana Why Does Skip Dislike The Tar Heels So Much? I Mean There Really Is Nothing To Hate About Em There A Great Basketball Team Oh Yeah Can Yeah Give A Shot Out I'm Watching The Show Now So LOL (Yeah Right I Doubt U Would Do That)
Brad (East Lansing)
Skip you have picked against my Spartans every game since Robert Morris!! What do they have to do exactly to get your respect? I guess beating UL and UConn this year and Pitt in last years tournament isn't enough... Is Izzo still overrated Rob? Sparty over Heels tonight!!
Dana Jacobson (10:49 AM)
chase, i don't think he hates them. at the start of the year he thought it was possible for them to go undefeated. said he didn't see it b/c teams always stumble somewhere. But again, he has praised them.
Scott (Colorado Springs)
Baseball is turning into a Soap Opera. Rob, when you mom was writing notes so you could skip out of school to watch the opening day baseball was awesome. Now we have Lockouts, Roids, overpaid players, and players kissing themselves in photos. Lets rename baseball to Baseball of our lives! Football is taking over as America's pastime. GO MSU!!!!
JP (NY)
Dana do you really buy into Skip saying the Sox have a better rotation then the Yankees? The Yankees seem to have the better 5. While Skip is praising guys who have not been around long, and is saying that Smoltz will be great, while hes only gunna be around in June.
Moderator (10:50 AM)
3rd down topic coming up later on: 5). Pick your NL division & wild card winners? 6). Pick your AL division & wild card winners?
Dana Jacobson (10:51 AM)
JP, I agree with you on the yankees ALTHOUGH...if the guys skip's praising pan out, watch out. I'm higher on CC than skip is
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Dana: Took my information from Colin Cowherd on the obstructed views. According to him, there is a section at Citi Field where you can't see LF or 3B.
Dana Jacobson (10:51 AM)
Hey Johnny, I think that was jay responding to you but clicked my name instead...he was out at citi field and the yanks new park and will have a piece on it later in the show
Donovan McNabb
That's right, Dana, one team has to score more points tonight because we know that a game can't end in a tie!
Dana Jacobson (10:51 AM)
nice!
Tim (Auburn,Al)
Florida just got a mainstream team after the Marline dealt Beckett nobody down here paid attention to them and the Rays were a joke for so long only now is their following significant and most of us don't count most of Florida as Southern the BRAVES are our team in the south
Dana Jacobson (10:52 AM)
Tim, I'll take your word for it. I know the florida teams don't get love (unless they're in the world series) but i see their gear out so they do have some fans somewhere
Thad Charlotte NC
Dana While everyone is pulling for MSU and their pregame pep talk from Magic, let us not forget that a certian UNC Alum will be in the house tonight, MJ ring a bell, and he will be wearing the carolina blue. Question, what color is the sky in Detroit today?
Dana Jacobson (10:53 AM)
Thad, in detroit in april - probably gray!
Tiger Fan Frank
I am from New Orleans the Braves DO NOT Represent me nor many of my boys here in the 504! We follow the Zephyrs of the (baseball) LSU Tigers more than any professional franchise. If we had to pick a pro-team, it would be a team with former LSU players! As a child, we used to go to Astro games quite a lot. So (LSU) Tigers, Go Saints!
Joey(Knoxville TN)
I am commenting on the discussion you had about Opening Day. As both a baseball and college basketball fan, I can say this. Opening Day is something special but it is one game, the NCAA Championship is for all the marbles, its more important and thus makes it an easy must watch over Opening Day. And yes, I know MLB's Opening game was last night but to be honest the Sunday opener to me is never a must watch, WrestleMania is more important than that, and that's a fake sport.
Dana Jacobson (10:56 AM)
Joey, if your team was playing in the sunday opener, bet you'd feel differently! But I hear you
brad wallace (indianapolis)
Why do dany heatley, stallworth, get no heat from first take when you killed mike vick, DRUNK DRIVING IS NOT A JOKE
Eric Ray Petoskey Michigan
Anybody giving Dusty Baker and the forgotten Cincinnati Reds a chance? Volques, Harrang, Arroyo, and Cuetos. There better than you think give em a chance.
Johnnie French (PDX, OR)
Let me go out on limb maybe cause I just worked 17 hours but I think you will see the KC Royals compete for an AL Wild Card spot.
Jay Crawford (10:57 AM)
here's a quick take of th enew stadiums. yankees stadium is lke a musem.church paying homage to their rich tradition. it is a beuatiful mix of the technology and tradition, a true masterpiece and one of a kind. citifield is a more cozy, traditional ballpark. great sightlines, love the brick work inside and out. think old school. one glaring weakness is there lack of recognizing their first 50 yrs. granted, you have 2 world series compared to 26, but it feels like ballpark of anywhere. both are spectacular in their own way though.
Dana Jacobson (10:58 AM)
brad, we did a lot on heatley at the time. Stallworth has been reported and no it's not a joke. My guess is when sentencing happens it will be talked about more. One thing people forget about vick was that the story dragged on forever. first the investigation, then witnesses, then finally a plea. I also think it was the shocking nature of the crime. What I mean by that isn't that drunk driving doesn't matter, but we see it and sadly we've seen people killed by athletes in a dui (leonard little)...the dogfighting was something people were taken aback by b/c they hadn't seen it.
Erlinda (Michigan)
Dana, we had snow storm in Detroit today with areas getting 6 inches but will can still party in the snow when the Spartans win!!!
Dana Jacobson (10:59 AM)
And i'm guessing the sky is gray, not carolina blue
Jonathan Trenton,Ohio
Hey Dana, around here in Cincinnati we'd rather it be just gray on opening day. Instead we have drizzle and snow showers all day!! Go REDS!
bill, sayre pa
al divisions winners are east yankees, west is A's and central is white sox, wild card is indians, the national league is east is philly, central is cubs, west dodgers, wild card is mets, hows that skip..
German(Melbourne, fl)
Hey Skip do you really think that the "BRAVES" are going to make it to the World Series, i think that it could be the Mets against the Yankees in a subway series. now that they picked up Gary Sheffield.
efosa (st.louis,mo)
i have a little issue with baseball, dont you think there are just too many games in the regular season,162? and why are teams made to face each other multiple times?i really dont get it.it would make more sense to me if every team faced each other, both home and away just like in soccer, lol first before they are made to play each other multiple times, except i am missing something
Mark, Boise, ID
Get ready for some officiating that heavily favors Michigan St. Although Carolina should win by 20, the officials will feel pressure to keep this game close and will hesitate to call fouls against the "home" team. I also expect Lawson and Hansbrough to be in foul trouble the whole game.
John (Crystal Lake,IL)
division break downs for MLB: Al West: Oakland Athletics Al Central: Cleveland Indians Al East: New York Yankees AL WildCard: Boston Redsox (Will win world series) NL West:Arizona D-Backs NL Central: CHicago Cubs NL East: New York Mets NL Wildcard: LA Dodgers
Christopher (San Antonio)
How has CC done in the playoffs? The year he stole the Cy Young from Beckett, the Sox smoked him twice in the ALCS. Skip hit it right on, CC the F-Rod of pitchers. Good when it doesn't count, invisible when it matters! I'll take Beckett over CC, Lester over Burnett, and Dice-K over Wong all year. How did Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown do in pinstripes?
Brian (Storm Lake, IA)
I'm in Skip's camp when it comes to his comments about LeBron. I don't think he does it to get a rise out of fans but he does it because LeBron is continually getting praise from almost everyone else and someone needs to take the opposition and point out the flaws or possible flaws. At least that's how I see it, please tell me if I'm wrong.
Dana Jacobson (11:04 AM)
christopher, randy johnson was over the hill...do i have to commetn on pavano and brown? its the arod argument i know you have to come through in the post season but you have to come through in the regular season to get there. better things to come for cc in the playoffs
Steven (Philadelphia, PA)
In your mock draft, who did the Inquirer reporter pick for the Eagles?
Dana Jacobson (11:06 AM)
Steven, we've adjusted our mock draft b/c of the broncos-bears trade. Our reporters are talking about who the teams are looking at and are not maknig picks at this point b/c our whole board would need to be redone sadly. Not the best way to solve the problem, but at least they're giving you some guys to think about
Henry
Hey Dana how about giving the UConn women some love? They are on the verge of their 3rd undefeated seaason and it doesn't even garner any mention. Is it that uneventful?
Dana Jacobson (11:07 AM)
Henry, we did a whole segment on them with Kara Lawson. But I will say this...their overwhelming dominance in womens ball hurts them. I just wish there was more competition. Sorry. I know that's not the pc thing to say, but if there was more competition I'd care more. It's always just a few teams.
Steven (Philadelphia, PA)
This is for Skip. I'm a transplant from California & I've lived in Philly for 4 years now. Even though I do believe that the Phillies will be hard pressed to repeat, they are a very good team with an excellent chance to win the World Series again. But I'm hoping to hear talk about my Oakland A's. I know our young pitching is key to our success, adding Holliday, Cabrera, Giambi, & Nomar, I think we can challenge the Angels in the AL West. Your opinion?
Adam G (Tampa, FL)
Skip I can't believe you're on the BRaves bandwagon just because of last night! You gave no credit to Derek Lowe being this good last year in the playoffs. You see the Braves tearing the cover off on the ball and get excited? Come on , the Mets have those 2 relievers at the end of games. Santana this year's CY Young winner, and a potent lineup 1-9.
Johnnie French (PDX, OR)
Dana how do you feel big Mario from your Big Blue will do this year as a Giant *cough go Eagles* with his chance to get more time on the field?
Dana Jacobson (11:14 AM)
Johnnie, I think there's only upside with him. He is a playmaker with great athleticism and leaping ability. With Plax gone, this IS his chance he needs to take advantage. I watched him bring down balls you never thought he would saturday after saturday at michigan
German(Melbourne, fl)
Hey Dana could you be surprise that the Lions trade for "Ocho Cinco" or even the Bears.
Dana Jacobson (11:15 AM)
The bears I could see...the lions would be an awful fit. He wants to win, he's not happy in cincy, he wouldn't be happy rebuilding in detroit. chicago needs a receiver...wouldn't you want cutler throwing you the ball?
Scott (Colorado Springs)
Hey Dana, where is Mike Hill? He was going crazy last week on here. I can't believe you guys gave him a red bull and a computer. He was answering questions in other peoples threads. It made my day, I couldn't stop laughing.
Dana Jacobson (11:15 AM)
scott, sorry to disappoint you but since i'm back, mike's back on another show. He's a hoot though
Kenny ( Kentucky)
Rob Parker; I thought that was Sam Young.
Dana Jacobson (11:16 AM)
Kenny, Scoop was saying that a couple weeks ago and there's definitely a separated at birth quality
Christopher (San Antonio)
CC has benefited by playing in the AL Central and NL Central, both divisions with extremely weak teams to pad stats with. Anytime he has faced stiff competition, ie 07 ALCS, he's garbage. Playing in the strongest division for the whole year will open peoples eyes in his true abilities!
Oaks (Noo York)
For Skip. Man, why are you so down on the Yankee's staff? CC-AJ-Wang, those are 3 number one's! 3 guys that have the chance to win 20 games. Andy Pettitte is a post-season warrior, one of the best. And Joba is going to show WHY hes a starter. So whats wrong? Whats not to like?
Dana Jacobson (11:16 AM)
christopher, we'll see won't we
Sean (Wilmington Ohio)
Thats true dana, The WNBA can be fasinating at times but not enough for the talent pool to grow for the Women, but it is still in its infantcy so a decade from now NCAAW will be more popular as young women like my own daughter will have more female sports idols on prime time or at least daily.
Anthony (Media, Pennsylvania)
I don't understand why everyone is so quick to count out the Phillies for 2009. People say their bullpen won't be able to repeat their performance of last year but they also underachieved at the plate batting .255 as a team, also adding Raul Ibanez who had over 50 more hits then the once left-fielder Pat Burrell
James Denver
Holiday ws a product of Coors field like all ex Rockies his numbers will drastically fall now hes out of the thin air.
Rod (Cedar Rapids, IA)
The Braves will make the playoffs taking the Wild Card. Phillies in the East, Cubs in the Central, and the Dodgers in the West. Cubs win the League and the World Series against the Red Sox.
Dana Jacobson (11:18 AM)
Sean, I worked in sacramento for 6 years, 5 of it while the monarchs were there. The worst thing the league did was expand without havnig the pool of talent. I hope the popularity contineus to grow and it trickles down. It's like if you win they will come...same goes here. If there's good competition, they will come
will liverpool ny
dana you rock i am a first time chatter. mets and angels world series, this years tampa bay rays i hope are the bluejays and pirates.since syracuse is out i can't wait for opening day.have a great day all
Dana Jacobson (11:19 AM)
will, welcome. no you didn't get up for the you rock comment. don't see it ine bluejays or pirates. i do think as skip just said, the reds will surprise some teams this year...maybe they're the rays
Dave, Terre Haute, IN
Being from the midwest, we have heard how bad the big 10 is this year. Penn State wins the NIT and MSU has a chance to win the national championship. Not bad for a "down" year in the big 10.
Moderator (11:19 AM)
how 'bout them apples?? Skip's picking the Reds in the NL Central
Dana Jacobson (11:20 AM)
Dave, I ripped the big 10 for past performance and I stand corrected. They came and they performed, about time!! It's been awhile and it was nice to see...all deserve props. Better conferene comp means better tourny performance in theory. We saw some of that with big 10 and big east
Jonathan Trenton,Ohio
Hey Dana, What do you think is going to happen to the Rays if they do not perform up to the bar that they raised for themselves last year? Will they be considered a "one hit wonder" or will they blame it on the Yankees and them grabbing up the big guns of free agency?
Dana Jacobson (11:21 AM)
jonathan, one hit wonder if they tank in the division. Free agency is free agency that's what the yanks always do.
James Denver
My life is complete after 2 weeks of poting i finally got my message posted thanks Dana.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
How about Ocho Cinco to the Vikings? Yeah he's a prima donna but he's still a top flight WR. I'd be happy to part with John David Booty or even Tavaris Jackson along with some picks. You have to figure when Palmer gets hurt during the season that the Bengals will want someone better than Fitzpatrick as their number two.
Moderator (11:22 AM)
Your life may be complete James, but your spelling needs work
Dana Jacobson (11:22 AM)
same problem as detroit, not enough there he'll be unhappy.
Chris (Lakeland Florida)
Skip just gave my Braves a death sentence. Thanks for nothing.
John (Crystal Lake,IL)
Plaxico Burress meet Jay Cutler I think you to should become good friends and better yet teammates. It could put chicago football back on the map!
Dana Jacobson (11:23 AM)
john, it'll be ineresting to see where he lands. he had a chance with the giants from the jeremy schaap report over the weekend. shocked he turned it down. until his legal stuff is done, no one is touching him
Carlos Texas
Dana, how come the UFC and ESPN dont have a Television contract, that would be huge
J.J. Kansas City
Glad major league baseball is starting but I am already tired of Cubs and Braves fans. They are kind of like kudzu, they keep growing and really have no purpose.
Dana Jacobson (11:24 AM)
Carlos not sure. But MMA is getting some love on dot com, we've done some segments. Things all take time
Pat Rooney (crystal lake, il)
the white sox got postponed too. but you spent all that time talking about the poor red sox. east coast bias.
Moderator (11:25 AM)
Kudzu?? Did I just post something dirty? whats Kudzu?
Dana Jacobson (11:25 AM)
pat, the rays red sox match-up was a marquis one today...not sure the royals-white sox had the same draw going on
R.Mom. Spring Valley, NY
What is going on with the NCAA Arizona Men's basketball coaching situation? Why is noone jumping at the chance to run the wildcats?
Mike (Raleigh, NC)
Magnificent Monday dilemma with Opening Night, NCAA Finals and 24 what do watch and what do I TIVO?
Dana Jacobson (11:25 AM)
pat, also white sox postponed last night and red sox happened about 5 mins b/f our show
Josh (Orrville, OH)
wow, this is bad for the Tribe. Rob Parker picks them for the division, and I heard that John Kruck picked them to win the world series. There finishing last!!!!
Christopher (San Antonio)
Dana, you just proved my point about competition. When you play against inferior talent, like Memphis did, you get an inflated opinion of your abilities.
Dana Jacobson (11:27 AM)
christopher, i don't know it its just an inflated opinion but i do know you aren't as tested.
Dana Jacobson (11:30 AM)
west coasters - howie kendrick from the angels coming up right after lenn robbins tourney notes. kendrick's live, so i'll be back
Skot (Soo, MI)
I agree with Skip abot the NL Central the Reds have as good a chance as anyone else, as long as their young arms stay healthy and consistent and the bullpen doesn't choke. They could have used another bat but I think the middle of the order is set for years with Votto, Bruce and Phillips (most underrated second baseman in the league)
Moderator (11:31 AM)
4th down topics coming up 7). Before he was released, Plaxico Burress rejected the Giants efforts to recoup the $1 million in bonuses and guarantees that the team withheld from him last season because of his gun charge. Smart or dumb for he receiver to turn down the Giants? 8). Connecticut lost to Michigan State on Saturday night in the Final Four, dropping basketball teams to 0-5 at Ford Field after using the locker room of the 0-16 Lions. Do you believe in the Lions locker room curse?
Heath (West Lafayette, IN)
I have never put much faith in most curses and such things, but its hard to argue with results. Go Big 10!
James Denver
What about the Rockies oh yeah there still the Rockies and besides one magical mpnth 2 years ago theyll always be a joke. From the World Series to not evrn being mentioned its so sad.
Josh (Orrville, OH)
Being a Cleveland sports fan, I have to believe that the teams using the lions locker room at Ford Field is a curse. The players might say to the media that they aren't thinking about it, but you know that it's in the back of there mind. Knowing that every basetball team out of the last five have not won, they have to be thinking about that.
German(Melbourne, fl)
What would you think about Burress trying to work a deal with the Bengals to see if he can work with C.Palmer "DANA"
Dana Jacobson (11:40 AM)
german, the last thing the bengals need is another player with off the field stuff to deal with. may be unfair to say, but i'm pretty sure they'd agree
Brian (MD)
I can not believe Rob Parker doesn't think Izzo is not a good coach when all he does is win in march when it counts, when most teams seem to loose year after year
Randy (St. Paul)
These curses are all nonsense, there is no way basketball players are thinking about it...now if it was baseball that would be a different story
Dana Jacobson (11:41 AM)
Brian, he didn't say that. He does think he's a good coach but with one title in all his trips to the final four he thinks that he is overrated. i don't mean to speak for rob, but even he said this morning...it's not that he doesn't think he's good
Randy (St. Paul)
The good thing about the Big 10 is that all of the teams are young. Minnesota, Purdue, and Michigan, will all be even better next year, and throw in a more competitive Indiana and the Big Ten is here to stay.
Dana Jacobson (11:42 AM)
randy, it's all cyclical thankfully. id love to see the big 10 i remember from my college days where indiana-um-osu were all battling
Chris (Lone Tree, CO)
I think Plaxico is trying not to become a Michael Vick type, blacklisted because of his problems outside the field, its a good thing he didn't fight for the money.
Dana Jacobson (11:44 AM)
Chris, not sure he had to fight for his money. He just had to play and do well. The way not to get blacklisted, stay out of trouble and learn from your mistakes
Dana Jacobson (11:45 AM)
breaking news - burress just won his greivance to get back bonus money withheld last year b/c of his suspension
daniel (milledgeville, ga)
Dear Bud Selig, I find it difficult that you grew up in Wisconsin and still do not realize it can snow in April. Please learn how to schedule opening day so all games can be played next year. Thanks, Daniel
Heath (West Lafayette, IN)
Well thre is only one way for Indiana to go from last season. But as a Purdue student, I must say that Tom Crean scares me a little in a couple years.
Dana Jacobson (11:46 AM)
heath, he should scare us all i tink. but it'll be good for the big 10
victor monroe,la
dana this question is for you only.do you think michigan state will win the national title tonight? your thoughts.
Dana Jacobson (11:48 AM)
victor, the sports anchor in me says no. UNC, on its game will be too much. But I am rooting for MSU to do it. I think they can. I think they've been underestimated this whole tourney BUT remember UNC learned a tough lesson last year in underestimating the eventual champs
Chase(G-Town Ohio)
Dana Or Jay Where Do U See Plaxico At In The NFL Or Do U See Him Not Playing With A Team?
Christopher (San Antonio)
David Robinson completely changed the mentality of Spurs fans and citizens of the city, from a perennial loser, to thinking we had a chance every year. Congrats to The Admiral, and thank you for your assistance in putting San Antonio on the map!
Johnnie French (PDX, OR)
The Admiral, Stockton, Jerry Sloan, C. Vivian Stringer and Jordan elected to the HOF is this one of the best classes ever? (Don't hate on Sloan and Stringer they are beast of coaches)
Dana Jacobson (11:49 AM)
Chase, I think he'll be with a team once the legal stuff is done.
Val: Burleson, TX
Skip picking the Reds?? What's in his morning coffee? The Cubs will win the division... not sure how far they'll go in the playoffs though.
Brandon Calforina [via mobile]
Rob Is Crazy Picking The Cubs And Yanks In The World Series Both Teams Arent Mentaly Tough. Cubs Have The Curse And The Yanks Got The Curse Of Arod. Both Teams Wont Even Make The Playoffs
John (Crystal Lake,IL)
Dana how did you get involved with ESPN? And what degree do you need to get?
Dana Jacobson (11:53 AM)
John, Worked in smaller tv markets and worked my way up. My degree is a BA in english and communications, dual major but you can get any degree you want. It's all about internships and then hands on learning and reps. Some go for journalism degrees, others learn on the job.
Chris (Lone Tree, CO)
I have to believe in the curse, seems ever since barry sanders up and retired the lions have been mired in the cellar.
Dana Jacobson (11:53 AM)
Chris, how many playoff games did we win with Barry? Sorry, we've been cursed since bobby lane left. Yes I said we in regards to the lions... I can be objective when i need to be.
Chase (G-Town,Ohio)
Could You Tell Me What Team U See Him With And Why?
James Denver
Last time I checked this is a national resession not just a local Michigan Detroit resession. Wouldnt it help brighten the the lifes of those in North Carolina affected by resession. Give me a break with this feel good bull. The whole country has suffered not just Detroit.
Dana Jacobson (11:57 AM)
Chase, its hard to say b/c as the guys were just discussing he may not be around this year. That changes everything. If he avoids jail..bears, and jets need guys. Raiders give everyone another chance. Maybe cleveland makes a trade with edwards and could use a guy like burress. Miami would be interesting although parcells never wants drama so that's unlikely. I know i'm not giving you a team, i think those are options out there.
Dana Jacobson (11:57 AM)
Chase, bears most likely i think of those listed above
German(Melbourne, fl)
True Dan, but who's to say they wont try to work a deal. I mean could you picture chad an plax on the same team. Two egos that are willing to put things aside to win, if that came to be.
Dana Jacobson (11:58 AM)
German, I just wonder if the risk there is too high for the reward.
tyler, pittsburgh, pa
dana, do u think plex will play in the league again? he is alrdy 31/32 and is looking at possible jail sentence and the wrath-haha- of roger with a long suspension..
Dana Jacobson (11:59 AM)
tyler, if he gets a couple years, no. one year or less, yes. but like vick, it won't be easy
Lesley
James: Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Michigan sports have not been so great this year, so I think that's a bigger reason Sparty needs to pull out a W!
Craig Kirkendall (Toledo, OH)
anyone who says that MSU is going to be favored by the officials in tonight's Championship clearly did not watch the MSU-UCONN game! MSU had six guys in foul trouble while they didn't even make the bonus! Thabeet was falling down all night and the refs kept buying it. if MSU wins this, they will have to frickin earn it!
Will (WV)
as anyone reminded Jay that if State wins tonight, he has to wear a MSU jersey on the show!?
James Denver
wrestling is not fake
Moderator (12:12 PM)
Will, Jay didn't make any MSU bets
Steve (Houston, TX)
Hey on Friday Jay was going to both new NY ballparks & you guys would have a story on today's show. What gives?
Jay Crawford (12:12 PM)
james...uh, yes it is....
Dana Jacobson (12:12 PM)
Steve it's coming up
Gabe (West Hartford)
which of your producers is the best?
Adam G Tampa ,FL
Skip the Red are going to win the NL Central? Buhaahahahah that is the wrost prediction you have ever made buddy. Hope you watch them get annihilated today by the 2009 NLCS winners .
Dana Jacobson (12:13 PM)
gabe, anyone other than gabe.
Christopher (San Antonio)
No love for the #24? Winning his first race in Texas while ending a 47 race winless streak?
Dana Jacobson (12:13 PM)
christopher, we've got nascar coming up this hour
J. Christopher (Houston, Texas)
I would love to comment but every time i do it, it just goes to the chat screen with my post not up there, and what i just spent 20 min putting up just disappears
Dana Jacobson (12:15 PM)
J, you're up now.
James Denver
I know my comments harsh but I lost my job 6 months ago and hard to beleive Detroit and Michigan only places affected by resession.
Dana Jacobson (12:18 PM)
James, I didn't se your comments earlier but there's no doubt everyone is effected. The focus is Detroit right now b/c of the vast impact of the auto industry and college basketball's biggest event being hosted there. It's devastating all over
whhhyyyyy!!!
this whole thing is fake, if you can't post anything then you're just making me want to shoot a tree!!!!
Dana Jacobson (12:19 PM)
dont' shoot a tree. when you send you stuff in we have to post it.
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
Jay, Dana, Skip, & Rob where is the love for the LPGA? How bout that thrilling finish yesterday? Where's Brittany Lincicome PROPs for her first win in a major?
Dana Jacobson (12:20 PM)
R Mom, there's the love. I believe she got some in an update as well.
Sean (Wilmington Oh)
If skip tells me that the Reds are going to compete I guess Ill tune in! but Im not going to the game, its just down the road I could make it, oh wait Its snowing, and raining and cold.
Johnnie French (PDX, OR)
I know the MSU is big for the city of Detroit and the state but does that effect also carry over to the Pistons in the NBA in the playoffs? I see it's focused on the FF but not the NBA...yet. What's your take Dana?
Dana Jacobson (12:22 PM)
Johnnie, not unless its the NBA finals. Also this time of year all thoughts turn to hockey - another wings stanley cup would do something similar. BUT there is some value to this being a surprise and the title game being in detroit (regardless of whether MSU had made it there or not).
will liverpool ny
whhhyyyyyy it's not fake as a first timer they seem to do a great job.
Dana Jacobson (12:24 PM)
thanks will. the number of posts we put up guys often has to do with how busy we are behind the scenes. I pretaped a lot of stuff today and had a couple interviews get cancelled so i'm here with you. We do our best. also remember, a lot of posts come in at once so sometimes we miss them, only abuot 8 are up on our screen at a time and it automatically refreshes.
Heath (West Lafayette, IN)
Who plays out of the Lion's locker romm tonight?
Dana Jacobson (12:24 PM)
Heath, everything I've heard is that MSU is.
Steven (Philadelphia, PA)
Great job by all of you, Dana. Even though I asked you about the Eagles earlier I am a SF Bay Area native & a lifelong Raider fan. I think bringing in fellow Bay Area native Jeff Garcia in as a backup QB is a good move & should push JaMarcus to be a better QB. I also like the ESPN baseball guys saying that my A's will be a surprise team this season. I love the moves bringing in Giambi, Holliday, Cabrera, & Nomar, but our young pitching must step up if we are to challenge the Angels in the AL West. Your opinion, Dana?
Dana Jacobson (12:28 PM)
Steven, thanks. I just hate that frustrrated feeling when I sit in on chats, so trying to help folks realize how it works. On garcia, good move, if Jamarcus is a man. By that i mean gets tougher knowing a guy who can play the position is behind him. If he crumbles, you wasted a pick on Jarmarcus! But what a great backup to have on your bench - think warner and leinart in arizona. As for the A's...reminds me of my days back there with huddy, mulder, zito bursting onthe scene and the worry was could the young pitchers hang. No world series, but lots of playoff appearances, which is a start right?
Sean (Wilmington OH)
Skip, a local radio station had a name that tune challange, 1st place won a Free Reds ticket, 2nd place won 5 free Reds tickets.
Christopher(H TOWN, BIG T)
I'd love to know if SKip has any advice for a young sports enthusiast. I love sports and would like to make my knowledge and love for MOST sports into a career.
Dana Jacobson (12:30 PM)
Christopher , not sure if skip will see this or not so i'll offer my 2 cents. There are so many jobs out there, working for teams, in marketing, radio, TV, print just a part. What do you like to do outside of sports? Not sure how old you are but try some things out - you may think you want to be on tv but really want to be behind the scenes...or do pr for a team, or be an agent!
Heath (West Lafayette, IN)
Hopefully they can reverse that curse then.
Will (WV)
Does anyone think that MSU will add another loss to the team coming out of the Lions locker room?
Dana Jacobson (12:30 PM)
i hear a lot more UNC picks than MSU
Val: Burleson, TX
Re: Geno Auriemma's comments... it's too bad he had to use the stereotype - he's accusing the media and the gen public imposes - to motivate his team. He choose to use this platform, at this time, for this purpose...motivation.
Will (WV)
He did with someone in michigan last week in one of these chats. THe jersey will be mailed to the studios with his name on it.
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
Comprehensive sport HOF? Are buildings allowed? The Former Yankee Stadium or the Boston Gardens!
Jay Crawford (12:36 PM)
gabe, all of them
Aaron (Cleveland,OH)
with the recent play of my beloved cavs, (back to back road losses to Wash, and a beatdown by Orlando), should the Cavaliers have reason to worry? does orlando have the upperhand in a series or does home-court keep us in the driver seat?
Jay Crawford (12:37 PM)
aaron, the reason to worry is the cavs 2-6 record against boston, la and orlando this year.
Craig Kirkendall (Toledo, OH)
Dana and Jay, good job today! Usually, when I watch First Take, I just DVR it and go through what I like. But today, with the whole extended show and chat thing, I watched the whole thing. Don't let the haters ever get you down, there are way more of us who love you than not.
Dana Jacobson (12:38 PM)
thanks Craig! Glad you enjoyed it
M Carr
Hello, Jay, Skip, Dana, and Rob. I watch you guys everyday and just wanted to say hello. This is great.
Dana Jacobson (12:38 PM)
cool m! hello to you and keep watching!
Christopher(H TOWN, BIG T)
I'm pretty sure I don't want to be on TV also, hehe. I'm 21 and don't have any college, just trying to figure out that path in life. The only thing I like to do outside of watching First Take, and a few other shows on ESPN, and watching games, is... watch more sports. I've watched the show for almost 2 years straight and have noticed that Skip seems to not do much outside of working out and sports. I understand that you have to make a constatnt effort, like being an actual athlete.
Joe (Buffalo, NY)
I have a feeling Rob and Skip are really going to miss the true number one. The greatest player in the most popular sport in the world, PELE!!!!
Dana Jacobson (12:39 PM)
joe, good cal, but they wont be saying pele.....
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Wait, is this going to be a marathon chat today?
Dana Jacobson (12:39 PM)
Christopher, Skip spent years as a writer in several major media markets for several papers. It looks like everyone just sits and talks sports or writes about it. It's a lot of work. See if there are any jobs at the local radio station around you. Its a foot in the door you never know where you can go. BUT the people you see, work hard. No it's not manual labor or brain surgery, but those who are good, work at it
Jay Crawford (12:39 PM)
the marathon is on johnny!
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Wait, is this going to be a marathon chat today?
Dana Jacobson (12:40 PM)
Johnny we're going to 1pm eastern
Val: Burleson, TX
R Mom, how 'bout Great Western Forum?
Adam G Tampa, FL
Dana I know athletes I'm talking top notch Jeter, Manny and still can't get a good job in sports. I think I write pretty well but I don't know what to apply for with a pro organization.
Val: Burleson, TX
Jay, you're the man... Love the show. Who is your fav guest debater on FirtTake and why?
Dana Jacobson (12:41 PM)
Adam, start with pr department or media relations. The positions are hard to get but remember sometimes you have to start small. Do college and work your way up. OR I knew some guys in Sac who interned for the Kings (had a real job that paid money) until something opened up. Again, pr and media relations
Jay Crawford (12:41 PM)
thanks val! hmmmmmmmmm, i like all my kids the same :)
Thad Charlotte NC
Dana short and to the point. UNC plays at Cameron every year and has won the past 4. So much for Home court advantage. Who ya got tonight
Dana Jacobson (12:42 PM)
Thad, I think UNC will win. I want MSU to win. I'll be cheering for them
will liverpool ny
hey jay as i told dana first time chatter and have watched you since cold pizza when thea andrews was on show.keep up the great job.

The Reds will be division champs this year....get over it Skip
Dana Jacobson (12:43 PM)
will thank you... keep watching
Jay Crawford (12:43 PM)
oops, soory will that was from jay
Christopher(H TOWN,BIG T)
Thanks for the help, maybe someday I'll be whoopin' up on skip in a debate, haha. HE wouldn't have a chance rahhh.(He'd be his teams "TEAM OBLITERATOR")
Dana Jacobson (12:44 PM)
good luck to you Christopher!
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
If we are talking HOF sports arenas, I think you have to go with MSG at the top one based upon the number of different sporting events that have taken place there.
Dana Jacobson (12:45 PM)
We've had a few others weigh in...don't forget about the forum. I'd go Joe Louis arena too
Bob Liston, Missoula, MT
How can you not start an "all-time" all=sport Hall of Fame without starting with Jim Thorpe, who excelled at all sports?
Dana Jacobson (12:45 PM)
Bob, great point
Thad Charlotte NC
Thanks for doing this guys, this was a blast. SC should try it sometime.
Dana Jacobson (12:46 PM)
Thanks again Thad, glad you enjoyed it!
Adam G Tampa, FL
Thanks Dana I went to college, graduated last year I'm 24 young and have a love for all sports.
Dana Jacobson (12:47 PM)
Adam, good luck. Use your contacts if you have them. Can help you get your foot in the door
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Why am I not surprised that Dana nominated Joe Louis Arena?
Dana Jacobson (12:48 PM)
ever been? some great moments there
Mike (LaGrange Ga)
hey Jay how long do you think it will take the mets to get used to the new lines of Citi Field only a few errors but some of those could be costly
Jay Crawford (12:50 PM)
by the allstar break. the hitters back drop seems tricky there.
Jay Crawford (12:50 PM)

Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Important question for Jay: How was the food at the New Yankee Stadium and Citi Field?
Curt Borden (State College, PA)
My vote for first pick, all-time hall-of-famer is: Sir Donalad Bradman from Australia. From my friends from overseas, I've learned how this man dominated cricket for years and, statistically, dominated his peers in the sport more than any other athlete in any sport (including Jordan, Pele, Tiger, etc.). His career average run total per match was over 99 compared to the next highest career averages in the mid-60's. Check him out!
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
I've got to say: This show has really become something special. I used to just watch SportsCenter on repeat, Now I watch EspnFirst Take (both airings)and take in SportCenter later in the day. 1st and 10 great concept show that I also try and catch on repeat. Cold pizza has got nothing on EspnFirst Take (ha, ha). Jay Crawford, Skip Bayless, Rob Parker (& rotation) great job. Dana Jacobson I may possibly love you (Kit Who?ver). Keep Up the Great Job!
Jonathan (Rowland Heights, CA)
Dana, will you marry me?
Dana Jacobson (1:11 PM)
Jonathan, sorry got bumped off. Sorry the distance would be too mcuh but thanks for asking!
Steven (Philadelphia, PA)
A professional question for Dana & Jay.....I'm 50 years old & I have toyed with the idea of getting into the business of sports broadcasting. Am I too old to give it a serious shot?
Dana Jacobson (1:13 PM)
Steven, I won't lie. It would be hard. But depends on what you want to do. A lot of the biz is working your way up and that takes time as you know. Most people don't want to pay the dues you have to pay working in small markets for little pay
Dana Jacobson (1:16 PM)
Thanks all. See you tomorrow and chat with you Wednesday!
