Dana Jacobson (9:55 AM)
Good morning all. Today's breakfast, diet mountain dew and oatmeal. I am pretaping I believe almost all of my interviews today so I'll be with you most of the show. Behind the scenes stuff, i've been taping since 845am, in the building sine 6am. Loads of fun!!
Moderator (9:57 AM)
Stephen A. and Skip are weighing in on the UConn Women's Championship, Canseco surmising that Manny is on the list of players who tested positive for banned substances, and a possible Lakers/Cavs Finals...join in with your thoughts any time...
Will (WV)
We have doughnuts and goodies for todays chat!!! What are going to be some of the topics?
Moderator (9:58 AM)
will, that's not fair...sounds better than oatmea. I'll let jay give you some first and ten, don't forget it's dunk contest day. I want some "other" talk too...favorite easter candy, some movie talk too. i'll get to it.
Dana Jacobson (9:59 AM)
by the way, the last moderator post, was me
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Last night was the Daily Double for weak endings to the college hoops season. Give Louisville some credit for hanging around longer than MSU did the previous night but really, the Women's Final Four could easily have been called the Women's Final Foregone Conclusion.
Mixi (Los Angeles, CA studio)
The UConn women is the most dominant Women's CBB team this decade.
Angelica Rose (Los Angeles, CA)
Who really is the best Women's College Basketball team ever? The Tennessee Lady Volunteers or the Connecticut Huskies? I can't make a case for Tennessee.
Moderator (10:03 AM)
you can't make a case for the Chamique Holdsclaw Vols teams???!!
Umor (detroit mi)
Granderson had a good game yesterday. The pitching was so-so.
Jason (Chicago, Il)
Who and why does anyone let Jose Canseco continue to give his opinion about anything? Is it just strictly for entertainment purposes at this point?
Dana Jacobson (10:04 AM)
umor, detroit's problem will be same as last year - keeping pitchers healthy. It's amazing to me, it was their pitching that got them to the WS and it seems to be an after thought sometimes, well trying to counter injuries does.
joe (minocqua,wi)
i hate to say it but it's hard to argue with canseco he even had the a-rod thing right
matt (New Britain,CT)
Uconn women have been dominant this decade. Every year you expect them to make the final 4. Auriemma does some great recruiting to get this great consistent talent.
Adam G Tampa, FL
Montgomery reminds me of a young JEmele Hill.
WIll (WV)
If Geno at Uconn is so great as a coach..where would he fare in the NBA? Could he be that effective in a higher level of competition?
Dana Jacobson (10:05 AM)
Will, that's quite a jump womens college to the nba. i'd be curious to see how he did in mens college basketball. rumor was providence looked at him b/f.
Paul (Indianapolis, IN)
Gino Auriemma is hands down one of the best coaches in all of college basketball, male or female. Can these analysts stop saying they wonder what he would do in the men's game. It is unfair to ask him to prove himself on different category just because he is dominant in his field.
Dana Jacobson (10:06 AM)
paul, i think its a compliment in a way. he is dominant as pat summitt is in the womens game so people just wonder what he'd do at a different level
Bill (Wisconsin)
This is why no one watches womens baseketball....so predictable
Dana Jacobson (10:07 AM)
Bill, Skip agrees I believe. It's not just the predictability of it though in my opinion there just isn't enough competition
mojack (tuscaloosa,al)
stephen A. is the only guy to stand toe to toe with Skip
Dana Jacobson (10:08 AM)
mojack - you are so wrong. jemele hill does, erik k does, greg anthony, jalen rose. stephen a is the only one who shouts as much
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
It's going to be difficult to raise interest in the women's game if two teams like Tennessee and UConn continue to dominate. They need a few other schools to build up to contend with those programs, particularly with UConn right now.
Chase (Greenfield Ohio)
Ucon Is Hands Down One Of The Best Teams In Womens College Basketball But The Only Reason Is Because The Get The Best Recruting Classes The Should Even It Out Like The Mens NCCA Is
Jordan (Richmond va)
will skip ever join us for a chat?
Dana Jacobson (10:09 AM)
Jordan, not during a show - he preps in between topics. Perhaps at some point after one
Angelica Rose (Los Angeles, CA)
Yes Will, I think he can. He could take a team to the playoffs first season
Dana Jacobson (10:09 AM)
angelica if that's about geno to the NBA, you, what team? Not one that's been struggling and loses its coach. Sorry. The NBA game is quite different, dealing with those players is entirely different
david - charlotte, nc
at the end of the day, your average sports fan wants to see UCONN and Tennessee play for the title year after year
Dana Jacobson (10:14 AM)
david, i couldn't disagree more! do you want to see the same 2 teams play in the super bowl or the nba finals EVERY year? Idon't. I love when rivalries are built, like a lakers celtics in teh 80s but you could also throw the pistons in there...then the rockets came into the fold. If there was more parity, closer games, upsets, like we see on the mens side more people would watch
Drew (Washington DC)
I sadly have to agree with Skip and Stephen A. I'd much rather watch women's tennis, track and field, or swimming before women's basketball. It's the game that doesn't translate well between the gender's and I hate to sound sexist, but its simply not as entertaining.
Dana Jacobson (10:16 AM)
Drew, as a woman, I agree. So is it still sexist? It's about compeition and level of play. I covered a WNBA team for 5 years and didn't get into it. The talent pool got diluted, too many layups missed. If everyone played at UConn's level, maybe i'd feel differently
Rich, Bloomfield, NJ
I understand Steven A. and Skip do not like Womens Basketball but there is no reason to bash the sport. It has shown to be a popular sport and it has a select audience that enjoys watching it. The skill level in Womens Basketball is still extremely high but yes UCONN dominated this season but there are still quality players coming out of high school. Britney Griner will play for Baylor next season and will draw more attention to the game. Steven and Skip can hate the game all they want, but dont bash the talent, those girls work extremely hard for their sport and represent the game well and display great sportsmanship.
Dana Jacobson (10:17 AM)
Rich, I didn't take it as bashing as much as saying they appreciate other womens sports better.
Alonzo (Macon, GA)
Gino would struggle at the NBA level like most College coaches do. He is a perfect college coach. He would be just as effective coaching the men. I wish Georgia would have come after him instead of hiring Mark Fox.
Dana Jacobson (10:17 AM)
alonzo, some interesting points. i'd like to see him in the mens' game, same way i'd want to see pat summitt
Marc (Virginia Beach, VA)
I think Geno or Pat Summit could coach a mens college basketball team but the problem would be getting recruits for the first couple of years. I'd play under Geno or Pat anyday.
matt (New Britain,CT)
Its up to the ncaa and the media to bring back up women's basketball to make it relevant. You can't ask the players.
Dana Jacobson (10:18 AM)
matt, that's a chicken or egg debate, which came first. do you cover it to cover it (even if viewership isn't there) or do you cover what more people want to see. it's a tough balance
D dot B - Chicago
Stephen a is right why don't women connect with women sport teams? I think that other than basketball no other women sport doesnt even get any air time other than that soccer time in 2000, But in basketball there arent (well from my eyes) any women B-ballers that truly connect with women out there. Until then there gon be left for dead
Dana Jacobson (10:20 AM)
D dot B - why is it my job to connect with womens sports teams? i connect with sports and teams I appreciate and like. I'm all for the right to play, title 9 sure helped me out..but to support something just b/c i'm a woman, doesn't seem right to me.
Eric (Durham, NC)
Women's college basketball isn't that bad. A few changes are need to make it more interesting. They should lower the rim to 9ft. The game is played under the rim, therefore the excitement factor is eliminated. There would be a few more dunks per night.
Richard (Newark, DE)
I think women's basketball needs someone phenomenal to come into the sport. A 'face' for the sport. With that, I think they'd get alot more press, the interest would go up, and more women would play, strengthening the talent pool.
Dana Jacobson (10:20 AM)
eric, the under the rim aspect is often brought up as an issue! good point
Amy (Laconia, NH)
I'm a female who played basketball all her life and I never watch the WNBA... I watch a few Women's College B-ball games during the season & a few select games during the Tourney. I think if there was more of an inside, physical game it would be more interesting.
Moderator (10:21 AM)
they've had that Richard, Candace Parker, Diana Taurasi, Lisa Leslie, etc. etc.
Drew (Washington DC)
Perhpas its not sexist but as a man you ride a fine line saying that women's basketball isn't entertaining. It can easily be misconstrued as saying women aren't as athletic as men which isn't the case. But the missed layups kill me and its just accepted... In the man's game if he misses a wide open layup he gets killed for it. Why don't we expect as much from the women's game?
Mike (Studio)
I think this is Kobe's to lose. If the Lakers don't win the NBA title, I don't think they will win one for another 5-10 years
jack (st. petersburg, FL)
uconn is great but not the most dominant team ever. That title belongs to 1995 Nebraska football. The smallest margin of victory was two touchdowns against Washingtion and they thumped future champions, Florida, by 36 points. By far the most dominant team ever.
Rick (Leominster, MA)
Stephen A Smith is wrong again, he didn't think the Celt's could handle the lakers last year, he doesn't think they can handle the Cav's this year, when is he going to wake up and smell the banners
Dana Jacobson (10:22 AM)
drew, i think geno and pat expect more. it's why they are where they are! if you said women can't play it would strike me as sexist, no women have the ability...but to say you don't find it entertaining is honest
Greg (ATL, GA)
Why would Geno or Summit want to leave womens basketball? They have dominated the sport for decades.
umor (detroit mi)
Yeah the pistons would love to play the magic in the first round. And the Rockets have really gotten alot better without mcgrady.
Dave, Jay, VT
I have to agree with the guys, women's basketball is flat-out boring. I love the show and the debates.
Dana Jacobson (10:23 AM)
greg, the same reason nick saban, rick spurrier, and bobby petrino tried the pros...something different, anotehr challenge
Richard (Newark, DE)
Personally, I'd say the closest team to UConn in terms of dominance was the '07 Patriots during the regular season. But even then, the Huskies were far more dominant.
Cedric (Memphis)
Geno wouldn't be a good coach in the men's game because he wouldn't be able to be as much of a tough guy and bully players, plus in the womens game he has players for four years. In the men's game if he has talented players they won't stay for four years, causing him to rebuild every year.
Dana Jacobson (10:24 AM)
cedric, its true. one advantage womens game is 4 years of school!!!
Joe (clevland)
why wont jose conseco just go away
david - charlotte, nc
i guess i need to clarify my comment... because of the current lack of parity, your average fan wants to see the best basketball... the rivalry factor is there with UCONN and Tennesse... the "star power" factor is there as far as your average fan knows both of the teams coaches just from watching enough ESPN... i completely agree that it would be better for the sport if the level of competition was closer to that of the men's side... and to add to my point, i believe David Stern and the NBA were drooling over the Lakers-Celtics series last year
Alonzo (Macon, GA)
Stanford, UGA, Old Dominion, Purdue, Baylor,Maryland, LSU, UNC, Duke, Texas and Texas Tech have been very competitive over the decades and have wond titles. It's not just UConn and Tn. However, those schools just haven't been able to maintain their dominance. They do keep it competitive though.
Devon NJ
NEVER In my days did I think that I would actually AGREE with skip bayless, BUT I DO! These uconn girls beat all of there opponents by at least 10 pts! show me a stat that says the 02-03 girls did that! Ps? Tina Charles is a tiny bit better than swin cash in college!!!
Moderator (10:27 AM)
don't forget to vote: scaled of 1-10 on our dunk contest...here are some good candidates this week... #1 Michigan St.'s Durrell Summers dunking on UCONN's Stanley Robinson in the Natrional Semi Final #2 ROCKETS GUARD VON WAFER KILLER DUNK ON THE BLAZERS #3 CAVS' LEBRON JAMES TAKES FLIGHT ON SPURS
Justin (Utica, NY)
I'm about 60/40 on believe Canseco. Think about it... He has been right about every player he has mentioned!
Joe (clevland)
so since jose wants to tell on everyone does that mean i wont get to see any of the legends from my era go to the hall of fame thats not fair noone knows if micky mantle babe ruth did anythig to inhanse there ability
Greg (Fort Wayne IN)
Its hard not to believe canseco but he needs to shut up
Di Andre (Long Beach, CA)
I have to come to the support of women's basketball, it's not boring just more fundamental then men's basketball. Obviously there's no high flying dunks in women's basketball, but I don't believe that it's less entertaining.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
This is actually pretty amusing. We say that the women's game is not as well liked or as entertaining yet it has dominated the first half hour of this chat.
Rick (Gifford, FL)
the 72-10 chicago bulls are the best team ever...end of debate....next topic?
Justin (Utica, NY)
Dana, Do you believe Jose Canseco's comments about Manny?? I know Canseco has caused some termoil in Baseball BUT he has been right about every player he has mentioned!
matt (New Britain,CT)
Canseco was "credible",but he's just trying to get attention now.
Moderator (10:30 AM)
on that note Rick, next topics please: 4). Blake Griffin announces he will enter the NBA Draft, How good a pro will he be? 5). Jodie Meeks also announce he will enter the draft, even though he has not hired an agent. Should he stay or should he go.
Eric (Durham, NC)
summers 6...u can't fall after dunking on someone...Lebron 3...typical...Wafer 8...very athletic caught evryone off guard
Dana Jacobson (10:30 AM)
matt and justin, i find it sad that canseco gets any pub. yes he was dead on with the steroid talk from yrs ago BUT now it all seems to be to benefit or bring attention to jose, makes me sick
Moderator (10:31 AM)
wow, eric, thats harsh on summers, but I give you credit for explaining yourself
Brian ( KY)
Hate canseco I can understand that but he helped solve the problem by bringing it to light
Rick, Ft. Lauderdale
Jose Canseco is always stirring it up...He just can't seem to get past his own mistakes in life.I agree with Stephen A., he feels like MLB owes him something. He's what I call a self serving hypocrit...
Mike (Philadelphia)
In regards to the dunks...LeBron does that every night -- no big deal. Wafer's jam was something special. Elevation, and going baseline is serious. Hands down the best slam.
Dana Jacobson (10:32 AM)
folks, masters preview coming up after this update...
Moderator (10:32 AM)
MIke...re-read the rules...need a rating from you...1-10..lets go, chop-chop
Rick (Stockbridge, GA)
Knowing Skip none of these dunks will get a 10 from him, but the dunk by Durrell Summers deserves one. Robinson in his face, has a hand on the ball and Summers is still able to dunk the ball.
Moderator (10:33 AM)
Rick you'd be surprised, Skips feeling generous this morning...I heard his votes when we were checking the dunks out in screennig...
Brian ( KY)
As a UK fan I'd like to see Meeks stay I wonder abuot him tiring last season, but I don't blame anyone for going after the money.
Jeff T (Kasson, MN)
Blake would look great plaing with Big Al, and Kevin Love
Josh (MN)
summers dunked THROUGH stanley robinson--9
Jay Crawford (10:34 AM)
hey there room! jay here....lets chat. canseco, lady hoops, baseball, nba, let's rock it.
matt (New Britain,CT)
summers 10/10(for how it effected the game) wafers 6/10,lebron 8/10(typical lebron)
Joe (minocqua,wi)
blake grifin is by far overrated since when does just being athletic mean it will translate to being a great nba player?
Michael (Westwood (NJ))
While I hate to take anything Canseco says seriously, I'm happy he brought this up. If you look at Mannys appearance and production in Cleveland compared to Boston/Los Angeles how else can you explain that?
Drew (Washington DC)
Jodie Meeks is making a smart play. Without hiring an agent he allows himself to patiently wait and see what Calipari does in terms of recruiting. If JC picks up the right players and they can contend for a chip, he'll probably come back. Those Carolina boys set the standard on that.
Jay Crawford (10:35 AM)
michael, he was a skinny kid in cleveland. most guys get their man body around 25. it is an interesting topic though. his numbers have been ridiculous.
Alek (Baltimore)
SKIP-O-METER!!!! ITS TIME!!!
matt (New Britain,CT)
I just don't know how good blake will be in the NBA,I think it'll ctach up to him.
Di Andre (Long Beach, CA)
Who thinks Tiger finishes in the Top Three at the Masters?
Jay Crawford (10:36 AM)
di andre, i do!
Jared (Bellingham,WA)
Tiger Woods will win. He dominates this course and the way played in the Arnold Palmer Invitation.
Joe (clevland)
jay look up and answer my last question about hall of fame please
Jay Crawford (10:36 AM)
joe, what was the question?
Ty (Ga)
Durrell Summers - 10 + In your face dunk Lebron - 4 + same old thing Von Wafer - 6 + it was ok
Jay Crawford (10:36 AM)
ty, i think you have the right order. a little low on the wafer score.
Eric (Durham, NC)
jay, i don't want 2 be critical of summers dunk, but you cannot end up on the floor after serveing up a facial, how are you gonna stand over the guy and taunt him from the floor...lol
Chaz (Los Angeles)
Hands Down Summers. That Is a 9/10. The Whole Bar Was Screaming At That. Wafer 8/10 and Lebron 6/10
Jay Crawford (10:37 AM)
eric, its all good. shows heart and hustle.
Steve (Rochester, NY)
I can only imagine what Skip is going to give lebrons dunk... I can already hear him critiziting it... Will he give him a negative score?!
Adam G. (Tampa, FL)
Manny was skinny in Cleveland but his numbers match the 8 years in Boston don't they Jay?
Mike (Minot, ND)
10 for summers, robinson got dunked on at a crucial part of the game!!!
Joe (minocqua,wi)
wafer 9,labron 7 and summers 5 he didn't throw it down
Jay Crawford (10:38 AM)
pretty much adam. the rbi numbers were way off, but remember, he hit in a lineup in cleveland that included jim thome, albert belle, and on and on...for a while he was there 8 hitter... the 95 indians, one of the best off lineups ever! and they never won it all.
Rick (Leominster, MA)
Jay, how good was Beckett last night. And to see 'tek get a home run has me feeling pretty good about my red sox this year, your thoughts?
Dan (Pittsburgh)
Von Wafer's dunk was Kobe like. I think that's definatly a 10 out of 10.
George Hughes (Nashville)
If you follow Jose Cansenco's logic, Terrel Owens must be a known drug user because he only got a 1 year deal. We know that was not the reason
Jordan (MI)
Summers-8, he posterized Robinson!! Wafer-7 Impressive reverse Lebron- 4 no contact or reverse, just boring
Jay Crawford (10:39 AM)
rick, beckett was sick! but the rays have to put it in play more often. they strike out too much as a team. and good for jason! great guy, great player in his day.
tyler, pittsburgh, pa
wafer 8 the man is a newbie to the limelight summers 7 had a man in front of him and looked like he actually had his hand on the ball trying to block it lebron bron is 6.. king james does do this evry night but still gets a 6 b/c he is king james
Demone(Aurora, IL)
Jose Conseco is a rat, if he was doing this to better the game i can respect that. but he's tearing down our stars to spite major league baseball for his mistakes.
T (Houston, Tx)
I think Von Wafer's dunk should win... with all the rockets have over come and nobody talk about them, at least recognize one of our individuals.
Moderator (10:41 AM)
T- when you're done weeping about people not talking Rockets basketball... give me a rating..1-10
yemane B (rochester mn)
canseco is desperate and needs attention but i believe him...
Tristan (Palm Bay,FL)
is there going to be a rating system for the top baseball plays?
Moderator (10:42 AM)
not a bad thought, Tristan, we should give a hockey goal, a baseball catch and a dunk each night and have people vote that way??? anyone interested???
Demone(Aurora, IL)
Summers 10 he's won this by a landslide. there's nothing like sizing up a defender and jaming in his face. total adrenalin rush.
Derek (MO)
Love the Summers dunk a 10 others dont matter
Chase (G-Town,Ohio)
I Don't Know Why Everyone Is So Hyped Up Over Blake Griffin Entering The Draft I Mean Everyone Saying He Is Cut Out To Be In There But He Will Get A Reality Check When He Goes By All The Pros There And He Will Realize Woah I'm Not In College Anymore!
Moderator (10:43 AM)
Chase, whats the deal with all the capital letters??
T (Houston, Tx)
good idea w/ the baseball rating sys.
Will (WV)
Griffin in the NBA.....ok I guess! He will be average on the boards at first but he will have a big impact in the future.
Reggie (Warner Robins Ga)
Jay,what do you rate the dunks?
Jay Crawford (10:45 AM)
reggie durrell 9 wafer 8 lebron 5
James (Houston)
Von Wafer's dunk was SICK!!! I watched that game. It's a 10. I give Summers credit for getting through his defender. An 8. LBJ, ho-hum, a 5.
Shane (Lexington,KY)
Jay, should Meeks stay for a chance to be a turn around championship contender?
Jay Crawford (10:45 AM)
shane, stay!!!!!!! i love uk hoops ...
Nas (Houston, TX)
I like the baseball/basketball/hocky play top 3 idea, with playoff basketball and hocky coming up and the mlb season just getting started that should be good
Alonzo (Macon, GA)
How can you really project Ed Davis at this point? A few good games and he's top five? Come on. Stop gassing the dude's head up like that.
Chase(Ohio)
Moderator It's Just A Habit Of Mine LOL I Don't Know Why I Do It
Moderator (10:47 AM)
thats cool, just curious
Di Andre (Long Beach, CA)
I believe Meeks should stay for at least another year to develop his game more and become more mature.
Dana Jacobson (10:48 AM)
Di Andre, I'm with you. would like to see him stay
Adam M (North Carolina)
As a Carolina fan, I am super excited about Ed Davis, and look forward to seeing him wear the Carolina Blue next year
Dana Jacobson (10:49 AM)
adam, we got into this yesterday...davis is one of the guys who has to stay. this wil only make him better.
Greg (ATL, GA)
Skip is right! I wouldn't waste the first overall pick on Griffin.
Wiliam (San antonio)
Meeks need to stay and not be another Victor Paige
jerris (Fairfax, va)
blake griffin will be a the next carlos boozer in the nba
Moderator (10:50 AM)
nice analogy Wiliam
Mike (Philadelphia)
Meeks could be a top 3 pick after Cal get his hands on him.
Jason (Morgantown, WV)
If Griffin tries that up and under, circus, throw it up shot around the rim in the NBA...it will get swatted into the 5th row.
Mo (alabama)
Blake will be fine. Develop the jumpshot/faceup and handles. He reminds me of Beasley. Stephen A. said Amare, not hardly.
Rick, Ft. Lauderdale
How can you not like Blake Griifin, the kid is a stud. He reminds me of Moses Molone. He's tough and has the heart.
Jordan: Muncie, Indiana
Summers gets a 9, posterizing Uconn's 2nd best shot blocker in the final 4 is pretty huge, especially since it was partially blocked. Lebron's shouldn't be up there, he's the man, but that was just is standard two scoops of vanilla
Art, Charlotte
Why can't my comments/questions get any love?
Dana Jacobson (10:51 AM)
Art, love
Moderator (10:51 AM)
Jordan, like the two scoops reference...but where's the rating??? 1-10
Jeff T (Kasson, MN)
Skip is loony.. he will be a perennial ALL STAR for years to come
Rick (Leominster, MA)
I agree with Skip (on Blake Griffin). He has no perimeter jump shot, and he turns the ball over far too often
Art (Charlotte)
Dana, Part of the reason the the women's game gets no love is because the games rarely if ever make the highlights. I mean the last time I remember you guys talking about womens basketball it was when the Sparks and Shock had the fight. Appel scored 46, Coleman socred 42, and Louisville sent countless teams home but it was rarely covered. I mean these ladies will be drafted tomorrow but we have talked about Blake Griffin going pro since November
D dot B - Chicago
BLake Griffin is a Beast! But its all about what team you go to that really makes you in the NBA, after Skills and Heart.
Di Andre (Long Beach, CA)
Davis is staying, he needs to work on building up his body. He's a great young talent but he still needs to develop.
Dana Jacobson (10:54 AM)
art, limited time for highlights so usually it goes to what people want to see most. espn does support womens game in showing the games. when there is something good, we do show it. same as other sports that dont' get the cbb, cfb kind of love from fans
Trevor Gill (Ossining, NY)
Hey Dana, I am a huge fan of yours. I am 15 years old and I am trying to make it in your industry. It is my dream. My friend and I host a sports talk radio show on blogtalkradio.com called Chatterblog. The show is on Sundays at 11AM EST. I know this is a big request but we would love to have you as a guest some time. Is there anyway you would be interested?
Dana Jacobson (10:54 AM)
Trevor, send me your email where I can reach you on here and I'll shoot you an email. Not a problem
Eric (Durham, NC)
Dana, how tall are u?
Dana Jacobson (10:55 AM)
Eric, I'm 5'9"
Ty (Marietta, Ga)
Who thinks Michigan State will win the title next year? I do...
Dana Jacobson (10:56 AM)
ty, me too
Dana Jacobson (10:56 AM)
Ryan C. (San Diego,CA)
Skip vs. Stephen A. .. a game of 21 for charity
jay crawford (10:56 AM)
ryan, love it
Wiliam (San antonio)
I have to agree with Skip commparison to Dennis Rodman not because of the post up game but because of his work ethic. He at his size should stay to develope a mid range game cause unlike steven's comparison to Amarie he does not have the size to to use his atlethic talents effectively
Greg (ATL, GA)
What is Stephan A. smoking? Most of the players in the NBA have no heart.
Eric (Durham, NC)
hey dana, got a nickname 4 u...D-Jac...pronounced D- Jake, u like???
Carl Crawford (Boston)
Just to let everyone know, we are goin to kill Boston tonight, and I hope the soxs read this.
Dana Jacobson (10:57 AM)
eric, i've always been DJ, D, or Jake or lil' Jake. A few dana dains thrown in there. DJ tops on my list
Jay Crawford (10:57 AM)
smart carl, errrrr, todd from boston...lol
Dan (Pittsburgh)
Dana the women's game doesn't get respect because people don't really care. I'm not being sexist, but even women don't care. It's a sloppier game and there are no exciting dunks.
Dana Jacobson (10:57 AM)
Dan, we did this up big earlier...and many agreed. I feel similarly.
Nas (Houston, TX)
Dana, do you have a team that screens these submissions and gives you a selection to answer from? or do you run this whole thing yourself?
Jon Lester (Boston)
You're going down Carl Crawfish, I mean Crawford!
Jay Crawford (10:59 AM)
jon, jon, jon
Mike (Minot, ND)
Jay and Dana your show is my favorite, what sports shows do you guys watch most???
Dana Jacobson (10:59 AM)
Nas, Jay, myself, and steve (our moderator) are all on, different computers and have the same access. The posts come in pretty quickly with like i don't know 7 to a page so sometimes a whole page or 2 goes by and you dont see it. i try to go back when i can
Richard (Newark, DE)
Personally, I think these college guys should stay for all four years (or at least till Jr. year), regardless. Even if they have the NBA talent, there are holes in their game that the college game can develop. The NBA isn't as fundamentally based so these holes often times remain, and sometimes they can become liabilities.
Jay Crawford (10:59 AM)
baseball mostly, football, basketball and hockey
Tristan (Palm Bay,FL)
Jay good work pointing out the fake Carl Crwford
Jay Crawford (10:59 AM)
thanks trist
Derek (MO)
Jay, were u bummed about the cliff lee start it was one game but man he looked rough
Dana Jacobson (10:59 AM)
richard, in theory I agree...thing is, some need the money and some after 2 or 3 years really are beyond the competition and need the next level to develop
Steve (Phx, AZ)
I think the womens game needs a Michael Jordan type figure to turn people's heads!
Jay Crawford (11:00 AM)
derek, a rough spring too. he's been an up and down guy and im afraid he's down again.
Vinny (Conn.)
Jay, I'm a Browns fan 2. Do you think they will get into the playoffs? And do you think trading Edwards is smart?
Dana Jacobson (11:00 AM)
steve wasn't that supposed to be sheryl swopes?
Jay Crawford (11:00 AM)
vinny, man, i doubt it. and they should. it's not fixable between he and the fans.
Joe (clevland)
clevelans rocks boston we will see you in the playoffs
Jay Crawford (11:00 AM)
go joe
Nate (San Antonio,TX)
A college coach always has trouble moving from college to the pros ask Bobby Petrino.
Moderator (11:03 AM)
what if Calhoun calls it quits, would you move Geno down the hall to coach the UConn men??
Mike (Philadelphia)
Greg, that's an absurd comment. No heart in the NBA? Do you even watch?
Greg (ATL, GA)
Dana, just making sure your staying away from rabid monkeys up there in Connecticut.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Well depending upon who comes back, don't count out Syracuse for winning it all next season.
Jason (Morgantown, WV)
I take Tiger over the field at the masters. This might be the major where Tiger finally comes from behind on Sunday. I think Harrington comes out hot in the first few days.
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
Lebron's leapin ability aside, he always seems not to be doing much with his dunks. The man can dunk with power, though, this dunk garners: 4. Summers dunk would mean something if it were on Thabeet or if he stuck the landing: 5. Wafers dunk is the obvious winner. He brought the stuffing: 9.
Rick (Leominster, MA)
The spartans had a good run, but they will not be able to repeat it
James (Houston)
I've agreed with Skip occasionally myself. I then had to shower.
Jay Crawford (11:04 AM)
funny james! funny!
michael (reno.nv.)
Hey dana since your 5'9 have you ever played basketball or any other sports in school.
jerris (Fairfax, va)
jay, im a big seahawks fan. do u think they should pick up crabtree with there No 4 pick or try to trade down with the eagles and pick up more to talent on defense?
Mtwa (Fresno, Calif)
No one outside of Michael Jordan had the work ethic of Dennis Rodman. What have you people been smoking?
Jay Crawford (11:05 AM)
jerris, if they can get him, take him! i, unlike skip, love michael crabtree
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Just wondering are you guys moving out west like the rest of espn
Jay Crawford (11:06 AM)
johnny, no plans to do that now.
jerris (Fairfax, va)
i bet dana would give skip a run for his money in a game of basketball
Moderator (11:06 AM)
no Johnny, but I'm wondering if you ever see them filming "The Office" in Scranton?
Joe (clevland)
jay will the cavs do whatever to keep andy after the season aint he a potential starter
Dana Jacobson (11:06 AM)
michael - i played almost everything growing up. started as a swimmer, only girl on the boys soccer team, tennis, horseback riding, basketball, etc. I throw like a girl for the most part b/c i never played softball till adult life. I can knock the you know what out of the ball. Basketball and swimming were my 2 best but gave em up to try acting in high school. Now I play golf, shoot hoops, and do the usual workout thing most adults do
Jay Crawford (11:06 AM)
joe, i hope they do! he's a baller.
Rick (Gifford, FL)
is anyone EVER going to be honest about how winning a game or going undefeated or beating an opponent by double digits REALLY feels?!? this world has become so "politically correct" that honesty has been lost in the shuffle. it would be so refreshing to hear a player or coach really be honest and say what we all know they feel about the successes (or failures) they have.
Matt (New Britain,CT)
Bristol needs its espn
Dana Jacobson (11:07 AM)
rick, wouldn't it be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paul Speidel (Sioux City,IA)
Thanks for making this a regular deal. Love the show! Jay I too could eat the fith third burger
chaz (sa tx)
hey jay type this 3 times fast supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
Jason (Morgantown, WV)
I don't think Geno would get the required respect from the male players. He would be perceived as a girls coach that has no experience coaching with "the big boys".
jerris (Fairfax, va)
the patriots are going to win it all again this year. they always beat the steelers and the colts arent wat they use to be
jay crawford (11:07 AM)
chaz... supercalifragilisticexpialidocious supercalifragilisticexpialidocious supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
Adam M (North Carolina)
Jay, Im a huge Titans fan, any chance they land Torry Holt, and then are able to upgrade either the DLine or CBs in the draft?
jay crawford (11:08 AM)
adam, do you really want torry ???
Sean (Wilmington Oh)
Rodman just got fired from Celebrity Apprentice for being an alcholic...thats not a great work ethic
Brian (Cayce, SC)
Wafer: 10 Summers: 8 James:2
james (ohio)
Lerborn vs wade who gets mvp
jay crawford (11:09 AM)
lebron
Alonzo (Macon, GA)
Jay, did you copy and paste?
jay crawford (11:09 AM)
alonzo... yes
Rick (Leominster, MA)
Autographed First Take picture contest, I am a huge fan of the show and need a pic for my sports room
Dana Jacobson (11:09 AM)
jerris, with brady back you need to put them in the discussion. Plus shored up at rb. As mike reiss said, address some defensive issues - which they have teh picks to do - they're certainly in the discussion
jay crawford (11:09 AM)
rick, send a request to bristol with your address. i'll make sure you get one
Joe (clevland)
jay should the browns trade edwards to seattle for the 4th pick and next years number one hes not happy here he can follow fry lol
Richard (Newark, DE)
Rick... Have you ever been on the other side of something like that? I played basketball in high school, and my freshman year, we lost every game by at least 20 points. I personally am thankful that these coaches are PC, because we really don't like to be reminded of those losses too much.
jay crawford (11:10 AM)
joe, i wouldnt do that
Vinny (Providence, RI)
Jay so i am a huge Giants fan, my roommate had mentiond that they were lookin at Chad Johnson, and validity to this??
jay crawford (11:10 AM)
vinny, i thought you liked the browns... and no. not there kind of player...
Steiny (NYC)
Hello Jay, how are you doing today?
Booker (Missouri City, TX)
Wafer's dunk was a 10, Summers 8, James 6
jay crawford (11:11 AM)
steiny! awesome! living the dream brother
Joe (clevland)
whats our options for braylon
Dana Jacobson (11:11 AM)
Richard, he's not saying bash the guys to their face. But I'd like to see someone say yes we dominated them on every level. They didn't have an answer, when we all know that was the case. My last bball team, i think we won like 2 games so I know what that's like...im not insensitive to what you're saying. AND not in every game but in a title game, I see it
Jay Crawford (11:11 AM)
drop him joe...get it??
Will (WV)
I think Jay did copy and paste~!
Jay Crawford (11:11 AM)
will, i did! im a 2 finger typer but i fly!!!
Tayvon (Baltimore)
Tiger will easily dominate the masters.
Alonzo (Macon, GA)
Geno would get mad respect from the men at UCONN. They already know him and you have got to respect any coach with 3 undefeated teams and six rings. Plus, the he is a command guy who would not tolerate insubordination from his players. Male or Female. I wish Georgia would have gone after him vs. hiring Mark (who's that?) Fox.
Dana Jacobson (11:12 AM)
tayvon, here's what skip and stephen a think...first and ten
Ryan C. ( San Diego)
No way would I want to stick Westbrook on the soccer field .. he'd make me look silly and could you imagine trying to outrun him while dribbling?? Maybe he'll play in my rec. league!
prince (kingston,jamaica)
big up skip, he is very entertaining even if he is right and blake will be the next david lee
Dana Jacobson (11:14 AM)
Ryan, would be fun to see if athleticism is just athleticism no matter what the sport...
Adam M (North Carolina)
I'll take Tiger, no one in their right mind bets against Tiger Woods
Clarence The Steeler Fan (Baltimore, MD)
c'mon where's my post... Detroit needs my help here... DON'T PICK MATTHEW STAFFORD... BUILD YOUR LINE... TRADE DOWN... PLEASE THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
I take Tiger over the field at the Masters, Bayhill, at Dural, in Dubai, in Hawaii, at the Open, at the British, etc....Hell, in Phil's Backyard I am taking Tiger.
The Milkman (Orlando)
Durrell Summers dunk was an electrifying play that gave his team a huge lift but Stanley Robinson actually made a great block attempt. Robinson got all ball, Summers just had more momentum and the ball went in. I give him 8.5 because it was an exciting play. Von Wafer's dunk was NASTY. I give it an 8 for power and athleticism. Prince James' dunk was routine, I give it a 2.
Carlos (orlando)
jay or dana how far do you think orlando will get in the nba playoffs?
Dana Jacobson (11:15 AM)
carlos - eastern conference finals
Mike (Minot, ND)
Dana, what sport shows do you watch the most?
Steve (Phx, AZ)
I like how Steven A. Smith always interupts Skip like he was his Daddy!
Dana Jacobson (11:16 AM)
mike, i watch games more than sports shows. rome is burning, pti i check out and i flip to news all the time...but more of my sports viewing is actual games
Jeremy Ft Bliss TX
Dana, how can you say that Mich ST wins it all next year!!! What happand to GO BLUE!!!
Adam M (North Carolina)
I do think Geno could coach a men's team, but i dont ever forsee that happening, he is a monument in the womens game
Dana Jacobson (11:17 AM)
jeremy i didn't! i think jay is posting and forgot to hit the jay button
Carlos (orlando)
dana against who?
Dana Jacobson (11:17 AM)
carlos, not sure between cavs and celtics. depends on garnett
L Stewart (San Antonio, Texas)
Geno can coach the men basketball team at uconn or any where else in the country, be serious....if you can deal with that many women successfully, hey you can coach any body, any where! end of conversation!!!!!
Chase(Greenfield,Ohio)
Jay And Dana Does KG Have To Be Healthy For The Celtics To Win In The Playoffs Or What?
Paul Speidel (Sioux City,IA)
I think that Pat Summitt would be able to coach either mens or womens bball
Dana Jacobson (11:18 AM)
chase, i think so. maybe not first round but to make it back to the conference finals
mike( RedSox Nation
Dana you single or is someone a happy man
Dana Jacobson (11:19 AM)
mike, single
Derek (MO)
Dana has been busted, take away her michigan jersey
Dana Jacobson (11:20 AM)
derek, check out the earlier post. i didn't pick msu. I find it ridiculous that we pick a team now that's going to win it all for next year. may as well throw darts at a board!!!
Jeremy Ft Bliss TX
Dana, I was a little worried there...i know it's been tough on us Wolverines this year but we'll turn it around soon!!!
Dana Jacobson (11:20 AM)
jeremy, i don't blame you! just saying go green the other day was tough..and i like izzo.
L Stewart (San Antonio, Texas)
DJ what about my post on the women in sports postd earlier??????? did you read it?????
Dana Jacobson (11:21 AM)
L, i'll have to go back and look, not coming to mind sorry
Chase(Greenfield,Ohio)
Uh Oh Dana Shouldn't Of Said That Now U Will Get A Flood Of E-Mails Of Guys And Maybe Some Women LOL Asking U For Ur Hand In Marrige
Dana Jacobson (11:21 AM)
chase, you're probably right. I can safely say i will not marry anyone who proposes on an internet chat.
Dan (Pittsburgh)
Dana or Jay, You watch the WWE?
Dana Jacobson (11:21 AM)
dan, i do not
Christopher (San Antonio)
Dana, Beckett looked good yesterday, way better the C.hips & C.rackers Sabathia!
Tom ((Philadelphia, PA))
Jay I've been a yankees fan all of my life. Although they had a poor opening day showing on monday, I still feel they are the team to beat in the AL. Do u agree?
Dana Jacobson (11:22 AM)
christopher, totally agree. I was rethinking my ny rotation support when stephen a and skip debated the other day!!!
Jay Crawford (11:22 AM)
tom, no...i like red sox, sorry
Matt (New Britain,CT)
dan,we save our time for actual sport
Dana Jacobson (11:23 AM)
sorry dan
Chris-SIUC student (Carbondale, IL)
Dana do you have a favorite sport?
Dana Jacobson (11:23 AM)
Chris, nfl and cfb. used to be nba but in recent years i noticed i enjoy the nfl more.
Jeremy Ft Bliss TX
I know I cringed a little when you said that lol It was almost as bad as having to watch you wear all that Ohio State stuff...that must be awful
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
This sports chat is almost surreal~
Jay Crawford (11:24 AM)
its real shane
Dana Jacobson (11:24 AM)
Jeremy, sigh. I've had to do that too often lately
Rick (Gifford, FL)
Can't help but notice the awesome chemistry between Dana and Jay...you guys ever date? I think you two would do well together. Both passionate sports fans and equally adept at debating topics fairly. Just watch out for the "which sport we are watching" arguments that would surely surface!!
Jay Crawford (11:25 AM)
ha! rick, we're both huge sports fans...but shes a wolverine, and im a buckeye!!! lol dana is terrific!
Curt (Hartford, CT)
Why would Geno want to coach men? I'm not suggesting that he does not have the ability, but what about the issues that men's coaches have to deal with? Jim Calhoun has to worry that Hasheem Thabeet is going to turn pro...Geno doesn't have that same concern with Maya Moore
Alonzo (Macon, GA)
Tiger "I've done it"...great reply. Now, who can say that and mean it? Do your thing T. Woods!
Dana Jacobson (11:26 AM)
rick, no. jay and i are like brother and sister and fate brought us together with the whole michigan/ohio thing. we have fun and if our producers are parents, guaranteed they'd tell you there's siblign rivalry
Dana Jacobson (11:26 AM)
gotta do a baseball highlight
Christopher (San Antonio)
Self confidence or conceit? Fine line, but when you back it like Tiger does, it doesn't matter!
Adam M (North Carolina)
Jay or Dana, any thoughts on my comment about the Rams being willing to deal the #2 pick?
Dana Jacobson (11:28 AM)
Adam, didn't see it. can you send again
Chris-SIUC student (Carbonadale, IL)
Dana or Jay...do you think DA Bears will make the playoffs this year?
Dana Jacobson (11:29 AM)
chris, they'd better with teh cutler deal. need a receiver though, badly
Adam M (North Carolina)
There are reports that the rams are willing to shop the #2 pick, do you see anybody making a move for it, and if so who?
Dana Jacobson (11:30 AM)
adam i'm far from a draft expert...as mike reiss said to me when we were talking earlier today, the draft is its own business, 24-7. The 2 is almost as bad as the 1 in what you need to shell out money wise. If lions go QB alot of teams could use a jason smith type...so perhaps. BUT again a move up to 2 seems unlikely to me
jerris (Fairfax, va)
hey dana do u think stafford could be the next alex smith?
Dana Jacobson (11:31 AM)
jerris, yes. which is why i dont' want the lions taking him
L. Stewart (San Antonio, Tx)
Dana (DJ) i REALLY, REALLY THINK that if the womn get their own identity (stop trying to imitate the men) be women that are also athletes they will blow up like they are suppose to
Dana Jacobson (11:32 AM)
L, isn't that what they've been doing? Like 2 or 3 women have dunked, that's it. So far the game just doesnt have the same draw. It may never. That's ok, isn't it??? I mean hockey draws differently than football, track and field, tennis, gymnastics...all sports have different draws.
Matt (New Britain,CT)
or could stafford be the next big ben?
Jay Crawford (11:33 AM)
chris, i like their chances.
Dana Jacobson (11:33 AM)
that's the problem. who knows?? i know...scouts hopefully. BUT if they were always right we'd never have a bust!!
Paul Speidel (Sioux City,IA)
Speaking of the Cutler deal. Why do they give contracts if they ar eso easily broken?
Dana Jacobson (11:35 AM)
Paul, so you know you're getting paid. AND if the team wants to keep you they can. There's teh whole NFL/NBA non guaranteed/guaranteed money debate but no one is playing without a deal.
Vinny (Providence, RI)
Dana so if numbern 85, ocho cinco, is not a good pick up for the Giants, what receiver will they look at, god knows they need one..as much as i like Smith they need someone
Dana Jacobson (11:35 AM)
vinny, why isn't he? I'd love to see tom coughlin try to reign him in
Jason (Morgantown, WV)
Dana is 100% correct about the different draws. That's why it botheres me when I see people demanding "equal" pay for the WNBA players comapred to the NBA players. When the WNBA draws and sells merch like the NBA, then they have a grievance.
Chris T, Buffalo NY
First off, props to the UConn Women for their flawless campaign. There season should be up there with the best of all time, in any sport. Also does Renee Montgomery look like Jemele Hill or is it just me?
Dana Jacobson (11:36 AM)
Chris, we've got a little something coming up on that sep. at birth you mention...and swin cash ahead also to debate great uconn teams
L. Stewart (San Antonio, Tx)
DJ the athlete that are comfortable with themselves and good at what they do, seem to interview with you and your tough questions very, very well. Do you have a lot of the pros or college athletes scared of your questions and your style????
Dana Jacobson (11:37 AM)
L, nice of you to say thanks. I dont know if they're scared. I try to make people feel comfortable when I do an interview, just talk to them as I would sitting here. BUT I will ask you the tough question...hoping guys feel comfortable and answer. AND typical woman, I rarely take no for an answer and will follow up.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Just so I can set my schedule for today, will you good folks be chatting beyond noon or will this end right on time today?
Dana Jacobson (11:38 AM)
Johnny we'll be going till noon
Vinny (Providence, RI)
well i agree 100% but you beloved Jay told me that he would not be a good fit. I think that 85 would quite down with that ring in his sight..?
Dana Jacobson (11:39 AM)
Vinny, see brother sister, we disagree. Ill say this, he won't be an easy fit anywhere but I think he'll like the success the giants have. And that'll help. What do you give up for him though??
Tom (PA)
Dana, who do you think will be the X-factor for the yankees this year to get them to the promise land? Arod, Texiera, CC?
Dana Jacobson (11:39 AM)
tom, yes
Matt (Laramie, WY)
Stafford will be an Alex Smith if he ends up with the Lions. Cannot be a great QB laying on your backside so much. The Lions need to improve the line first and draft a QB later. Draft in the trenches Detroit and stop going for the skill poistion every year, as you have proved one thing... you draft theroy does not work.
Eric (Durham, NC)
no way, wafers dunk was soooo much better than summers
Greg (ATL, GA)
Lame. Wafer should of won the dunk contest.
Will (WV)
How does anyone feel about Garcia's possible productivity in Oakland this season.?
Dana Jacobson (11:41 AM)
MAtt - great post!! The line needs help. IT was why I wanted cutler so badly, address both needs. I can't remember which draft person said it but when you have soooo many holes, you need to be patient.
Adam M (North Carolina)
Stafford runs the risk of becoming David Carr if he goes to the Lions, sorry Dana
Dana Jacobson (11:41 AM)
Adam, exactly..matt i think just said similar thing. don't be sorry, i agree
Jay Crawford (11:41 AM)
will, he's better than russell, but wont see the field unless russell gets hurt.
Will (WV)
Dana, I am gong to my first Ohio state game this year because my GF loves them. Can you ask Jay to give me some places to keep myself entertained there? I am not a buckeye and cannot stand them...but I have to go regardless.
Vinny (Providence, RI)
Dana or Jay, i do have a proposition for you. I am the student who goes to Johnson & Wales, for culinary,i chatted with yall yesterday. If you give me a way to getin touch with you or if you want to get intouch with me, i would love to set something up to come cook breakfast for the first take crew. Let me know what you think!!
Dana Jacobson (11:42 AM)
Vinny, shoot us your email
Jay Crawford (11:42 AM)
will, the game is in ann arbor this year, and go bucks!
Jason (PA)
Yes, matt you are correct but you need a good qb to get it to that big nasty receiver you got in calvin, hes sick and needs to get the ball his way and on o-line man cant do that
Richard (Newark, DE)
Wafer wins. Hands down. I give the kid credit, and the impact was also immense, but based solely on the dunk itself? Wafer.
Dana Jacobson (11:43 AM)
jason, but the good qb can't get the ball to him on his back. no matter how good, you need protection
Caleb Vincent (Grandview,Mo)
josh freeman is the next big ben
Joe (clevland)
garcia not doing anything in oakland yea right
Mike (Minot, ND)
that jordan from indiana needs to quickly patent the phrase "two scoops of vanilla"!!!
Dana Jacobson (11:43 AM)
caleb, you're not the first ive heard say that
Jay Crawford (11:43 AM)
he wont play. al davis loves russell
jerris (Fairfax, va)
hey dana would u be mad if micheal Vick went to the Lions?
Rich (Miami, FL)
what are your thoughts on pat white dana and jay?
Moderator (11:44 AM)
I like it too, Mike, but I think its from the movie City Slickers...Billy Crystal's line
Jay Crawford (11:44 AM)
rich, love him. and until the nfl figures out how to snuff out the wildcat, he's a commodity
Dana Jacobson (11:44 AM)
jerris, no. i've said it many times b/f as a huge dog lover. he's served his time. he deseves another chance. he's talented, who knows what he's got in him after the year in jail...but you can't teach talent
mojack (Tuscaloosa,AL)
Did Kellen Winslow deserve all that money? Jay or Dana
Chris (Florida Alum in Omaha, NE)
Dana, I agree...the Lions should plug the GAPING hole in the O-line and realize that there are A LOT better QB prospects comming out of all 4 years of college fball next year like Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow you could draft next year. And Smith would have had a year to better his Oline skills and actually protect a skill position player!
Jay Crawford (11:44 AM)
mojack, no
Joe (clevland)
we didnt even think michigan was coming last year they couldnt get past toledo year
Dana Jacobson (11:44 AM)
Joe, ouch!!!!
Rick (Leominster, MA)
I am pretty sure the standard two scoops of vanilla has been around a while
Clarence The Steeler Fan (Baltimore, MD)
and he should Jay... let the kid develope, geez...
Matt (Laramie, WY)
Dana, Want this be the Lions first draft without Matt Millen as GM? I think it is and if so that is the Lions first positive.
Jay Crawford (11:45 AM)
sorry clarence, not seeing it.
Jason (Morgantown, WV)
After reading all these desperate posts with fans hoping against hope to fill holes on their team, I can say it's nice to be a Steeler fan! :-P
Dana Jacobson (11:45 AM)
matt, since he took over, yes. and it better be
Gary Brooten, Mn
Jay, I know you're a Tribe fan and well I'm a Twins fan...how close do you think they will be at the end of the season as far as winning the central divission? Myself I think it'll be between the 2.
Jason (PA)
yes i agree dana but do you think its easier to get a talented qb in the draft or an offensive line me? to me i think i would draft the skilled osition player first and get the line men later on in the draft or also pick one up through free agency
Jay Crawford (11:46 AM)
gary, dont count out chicago. kc may be a factor for a while, but i doubt it. in the end, chicago rides on.
Joe (clevland)
why should lebron change his dunk with our luck he will fall wrong or something to get himself hurt do whats comfortable lebron
Dana Jacobson (11:46 AM)
Jason i think its tough to get a qb that pans out at number one outside of the mannings. rememer big ben, matt ryan not #1 pick
Rick (Gifford, FL)
skip bayless vs. barack obama.....book that show asap.
CC (Atlanta)
Dana... I bet you're one of the may who panned the Falcons for drafting Ryan last year too!
Jay Crawford (11:47 AM)
we'll get on it, but dont hold your breathe. that would be fun!
Joe (clevland)
jay who will the browns draft or trade down
Dana Jacobson (11:47 AM)
CC, nope. Not the #1 overall pick. there's a difference. I said earlier i'm not a scout. BUT the top pick QB wise is a tough one
jay (jacksonville, al)
if u had to choose between dwade and kobe for the last shot who would u choose
Dana Jacobson (11:48 AM)
jay, kobe
Richard (Newark, DE)
Vick in Detroit?!? That'd be awesome! Granted, I'm a big Vick fan, but that'd be a good idea IMO. Get a O-Lineman or two in the draft, and snag Vick once he gets out. Give him the rest of the season to get in the swing of things, and next year? Vick to Johnson sounds good to me.
Jay Crawford (11:48 AM)
brian orakpo...the man is a beast!
Adam M (North Carolina)
wow, did J'Nathan drive the bus too, he did everything else on his HS football team
Jay Crawford (11:48 AM)
funny adam!
Clarence The Steeler Fan (Baltimore, MD)
sorry Jay... I see this is the year that Russell will get his chance to surprise with such a weak division. It's the long ball that will mark his success... also they kept their HC right? What QB will perform with so many head coaches?
Jay Crawford (11:50 AM)
clarence, i hope youre right. i love the kid. and its not fair to him whats happened to his career. things have been a mess in oakland, too many systems, too many coaches, too many distractions. id love to see what he could do in a stable system with good direction.
L. Stewart (San Antonio, Tx)
DJ I am very courious if you get uncomfortable with confident single athlete? It seems that some of them are a little playful or flirtty with ya - we all know why (smile) and how do ya usually handle them???? or do ya just try and dress down for them prior to the interview???
Will (WV)
Dana, tell Jay that USC will win in Columbus on Sept. 12th this year....its on!! I will be there!
Jay Crawford (11:51 AM)
whatever will...stop hatin
Dana Jacobson (11:52 AM)
L, not at all. I dress professionally when i'm working. I'm a woman, don't try to be a man. I'm not uncomfortable at all. I'm there to do a job. I spent 6 years in the kings, niners, raiders locker rooms and did my job. Its what it's about. Can't tell you what they're thinking but for me it's a conversation.
Caleb Vincent (Grandview,Mo)
wow so many personal questions towards dana .. i thought this was about sports
Dana Jacobson (11:52 AM)
Caleb, it's ok...we talk about it all. AFterall we're doing this now monday through friday. 2 hours a day!!!
Booker (Missouri City, TX)
Anybody understand why no one realizes that Hurricane Ike affected the Astros and the Texans last year? both teams were really set back by it but most analyst are just saying they either underachieved or didn't capitalize on opprtunities
Dana Jacobson (11:53 AM)
booker, funny...at the time the analysts said wow, this is having an impact. i guess its that teams are still expected to perform
Adam M (North Carolina)
great, professional answer Dana!
Clarence The Steeler Fan (Baltimore, MD)
I agree with Aikman
Dana Jacobson (11:55 AM)
adam, ask anyone who works with me. it's true. i mad a vow when i started in sports that i'd never date an athlete (not sure any wanted to date me then!) Regardless, it's just not an issue for me. It's an interview. I want to get to know the person i'm talking with. I know it sounds pc, but I swear it's true
Caleb Vincent (Grandview,Mo)
Dana ever thought about sitting across from skip and out debating him!?
Dana Jacobson (11:55 AM)
caleb - weve sort of done it...it can get ugly
Joe (SacTown Cali)
Dana! We Miss you on KXTV!
Dana Jacobson (11:56 AM)
Joe, thanks!! Good times back in Sac. Can't say i miss covering the kings right now...i had my down time with them.
david (sunrise,fl)
caleb.... not sure if you've ever heard the dan lebatard show but they don't talk about sports at all.... sports talk radio is amazing right?
Dana Jacobson (11:57 AM)
david, nothing better!!
mojack (Tuscaloosa,AL)
I love Swin Cash.
Chris (East Detroit)
Is it me or does anyone agree that the detroit pistons problems are not just the players but the coach as well. I know its curry's first year but your given a team with proven scorers & defenders that has represented the east in the last 5-6 years, the given a.i. who's a top 50 player & u cant make it work? It just seems like things could b diff. with a better coach. hey jay GO BLUE!
Dana Jacobson (11:58 AM)
chris, the iverson trade bad move. knew it at the time, both skip and i agreed, shocking
zippity doodah (Bowers Beach, Delaware)
Dana, Did Michigan State losing mean that you lost a bet of any kind? I have to believe Jay jumped on the opportunity!
Dana Jacobson (11:59 AM)
zippity - no shot. i only make friendly wagers on my team. not on sparty
Mike(Minot, ND)
Moderator: Get Swin Cash on the show to debate skip, now!!!
Carlos (orlando)
yea , but didnt jou dumars do it with the intention to let iverson go after one year and frre up salary room to try to get lebron james? thats what a lot of experts said
Dana Jacobson (11:59 AM)
yes but for this year awful. gotta go close the show
Matt (New Britain,CT)
bring swin on 1st & 10,owning skip
Tom (PA)
UCONN women this year is the best team I've ever seen at the WOmen's Level. Nobody has ever dominated like them. No one came close to beating them...it would be considered a victory if you were within 15 points of them. Definetly better than that 02 team.
Chris (East Detroit)
dana bad is right but still michael curry hasnt shown any reason why he should be a head coach in this leauge
Dana Jacobson (12:03 PM)
chris,i haven't seen enough games all the way through, to see decisions made, etc. but i do hate the one and one thing...
Joe (clevland)
they wanted the cap room at the end of the season cant blame them
Dana Jacobson (12:05 PM)
joe, i guess my point with that is..you can't expect anything this year then. so people who are disappointed, this is what you get
Moderator (12:05 PM)
see you tomorrow on First Take folks
Adam M (North Carolina)
Dana, I wasnt at all trying to hate on you, you are truly a professional and do a great job on the show!
Dana Jacobson (12:06 PM)
Adam thanks. I didn't think you were, i'm sure there were some groans out there of the "nice pc response" variety
Steve (Phx, AZ)
Jay!!! Where did you go? all I have heard is Dana Dana Dana!!!!!
Dana Jacobson (12:07 PM)
steve, i taped most of my interviews...that's why you got bombarded with me
Jason (Morgantown, WV)
The old Webber/Bibby/Jason Williams/Divac Kings were so fun to watch.
Dana Jacobson (12:07 PM)
jason, even better to cover. fun years.
CC (Atlanta)
Oh please, so you're basing it on what amounts to superstition? So if Tom Brady and Terrell Davis were both the 200th pick, does that mean every player at that spot is a "gem"?
Dana Jacobson (12:13 PM)
CC if youre still here, i'm basing it on an overall #1 pick makes a heck of a lot more money. more expectation etc. to be worth that is tougher than the 8th pick. just a number s thing. The QB position has the most expectation with it regardless and to be able to come in and run a system your first year...that's a special select few.
Rick (Leominster, MA)
what happened to Vick going to the new upstart football league
Dana Jacobson (12:13 PM)
Rick he can't do anything till he's out of jail and released by the falcons.
Jason (PA)
yes true but wy not take the best qb available when hes there dana instead of hoping the 5th or 6th best turns into big ben or matt ryan
Dana Jacobson (12:15 PM)
Jason, if you can get a lineman that you know will make a difference for years to come and you're uncertain on the qb, id take the lineman
Dana Jacobson (12:15 PM)
that's it for today folks. Thanks! We'll be chatting with you tomorrow
