Chat with Kevin Barnes

Barnes was a two-year starter for Maryland before a shoulder injury derailed his senior season. He totaled six INTs, four coming in his junior year, which led the team. Depsite missing time with the injury last year, his two INTs still ranked second and his seven passes defended was third.
According to Barnes's Scouts Inc.'s draft profile, he "can elevate over the top of receivers and get hands on football without making contact. Hands are on the smaller side but he still does a good job of snatching the ball out of the air."
Send in your questions now, then join Barnes on Friday at 2 p.m. ET!

We've got Kevin!
Rick (Annapolis, MD)
You were a wide receiver in high school, did you ever want to be a WR in the NFL?
Kevin Barnes (2:00 PM)
No, I think defense has always suited me. A few years ago they asked me if I wanted to swith over to receiver. This was when Heyward-Bey was coming in. But I told them that I was a defensive oriented guy.
Josh (Vermont)
What part of your game do you think needs to be most improved?
Kevin Barnes (2:00 PM)
I feel being a sure tackler. Sometimes I go for the big hit when I should just try to get the guy down. So, being a more consistent tackler.
Lindsey (OH)
Have you talked to any current NFL players about what to expect in the NFL?
Kevin Barnes (2:01 PM)
I've talked to close friends, former teammates. Everybody gives me a lot of good advice. I know going in as a young guy you have to be very upbeat and very mature.
tynan, San Antonio
Have you always wanted to go into the NFL? If not, what did you want to do?
Kevin Barnes (2:02 PM)
I was born in North Carolina and that's a basketball state. Basketball was my first love. I was going back and forth between football and basketball camps. I stopped growing at 6-1 in the 10th grade. I wasn't really a point guard. And your dream is always to make it to the NFL, so I guess the 18 years I've been playing, I thought I could make it.
Ted (New Jersey)
What will you miss most about playing football at the University of Maryland?
Kevin Barnes (2:03 PM)
We came here as young adults, and we grow up with these guys, my teammates. Being able to play for the student body. In college, the people you play in front of, you see in your classes. You don't really get to interact with the fans much in the NFL.
chauncey (teaneck)
How did you get along with Lance Ball he went to my high school?
Kevin Barnes (2:04 PM)
Lance is a great competitor. Really level headed guy. He definitely brings out the toughness in you in your practicing. He's definitely one person that's helped me with my tackling in the years playing with him.
Justin Behling (Boyceville, WI)
Who is your favorite current NFL player and why?
Kevin Barnes (2:05 PM)
Hmmmmm....It sounds kind of odd, but I've always like TO. Beside the off field antics and controversies, on the field, he's a great player. Good work ethic. He always gives it up for his team, aside from the drama. He's a team player with a good work ethic.
Don (NYC)
What was the best advice that Ralph Friedgen has ever given you?
Kevin Barnes (2:06 PM)
Not necessarily advice, but just the way he coached me in my time. I didn't get a chance to play much my first year, but he taught me the value of patience and hard work. When I got a chance to play, I realized it's a once in a lifetime chance and I have to make the best of it.
Tynan from SA
Do you have teams you cant stand, or any teams you want do be drafted by?
Kevin Barnes (2:07 PM)
Oh no. There will be no Eli Manning situation here. I would like to play for any organization. It's a big investment and it's fulfilling my dreams, so I have to do the best that I can.
Edgar (El Paso, TX)
Hey Kevin, thanks for chatting with us. How often did you line up against Heyward-Bey in practice and who would win that battle?
Kevin Barnes (2:08 PM)
We went against each other every day. He got me some and I got some. If you had to say percentages, I'd say 60-40, I won. We battled every day. He's a great guy. He'd have some hot streaks, but I feel like I got him more than he got me.
Andy (Denver)
What was your favorite NFL team growing up?
Kevin Barnes (2:08 PM)
Being that I spent my childhood between North Carolina and Maryland, the Panthers. My family was from the south and they were Cowboys fans, so them as well. But I was more of a fan of great players.
Phil (LA)
Who has been the biggest influence on your career thus far?
Kevin Barnes (2:10 PM)
My former position coach. He came over from Boston College where they have great protection in the secondary. He just told me to go out and make plays. He went out there and encouraged me to make plays. Once I saw that I could go out there and make them, it was an instant confidence boost.
James (Chicago)
If you were not a football player, what would you be?
Kevin Barnes (2:10 PM)
If I weren't a football player, I would probably still trying to play basketball. It was always a goal I set for myself, to play. If I wasn't playing football, my whole life would be changed. Hard to say.
Kevin Barnes (2:12 PM)
I appreciate the support through the ups and downs. Thanks for keeping me upbeat, espeically through the injur this year. I'll see you in a couple of weeks at the draft. Thanks everybody!
