AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Welcome to the Thursday chat, gang! We've got a light schedule of games today, but no shortage of questions already in the queue, so let's get this party started, shall we? What active will be first to step up and get "their treatment" today?
Am I now ownable in 10 team leagues with the X-man gone for 2009?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
I think you were ownable long before the injury, due to the steals potential. And Nady will be replaced by Swisher, so it's not like your PT is changing any.
My team is batting like .120 this week, despite a roster of studs like Markakis, Braun, Gonzalez, Crawford, Hart, Tulo... panic or slow week?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Teams play, then get a day off, then play then it rains and it's cold. Early April can be brutal to some teams... I never panic about my team as a whole until May.
Scott (Boston, MA)
Who takes the Dice-man's place in the Rotation? throw out some guys worth dropping in order to pick him up?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I think for now Justin Masterson gets the call. But I'd sit tight for now on grabbing him.
WIlson (Oak Island)
AJ, Who do I go with as a permanent replacement for Lasting Milledge who I dropped out of spite in a deep points league though I traded two solid pitchers to get him: Dexter Fowler or Jeremy Hermida?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I like Fowler a lot. For me he's the choice.
Sean (Boston, MA)
Cliff Lee: to start, or not to start?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I'd sit him against CC and the Yanks, but I do think he will eventually bounce back.
anthony ( cooper city, florida)
Is it time to get worried about Chris Ianetta, he is my starter in all 5 of my leagues and i rarely react early, advice?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
I actually dropped Ianetta in one of my leagues today, grabbing up Yadier. Because he was so hot in the spring, the disappointment is large with him right now. In general, I preach patience with your studs and guys you drafted highly, but if you're swapping out a 22nd round flier, then be my guest.
Joe (Lincoln, NE)
Bonafacio or Cantu? Both have started hot, but who stays there?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Bonafacio will cool off (he has to, doesn't he) but I am a big Cantu Can Do guy. His power numbers are legit.
Ben, Knox, IN
I know that it is early but how long should a person wait before he cuts bait on his roster duds? Example, Sandoval and Maybin. I have missed out on guys like Morgan, Bonafacio and Lind waiting on these guys.
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Like I've been saying... the toughest guys to forecast are the ones with little to no track record... like Sandoval and Maybin. I have no problem with swapping these guys out early, especially in non-keeper leagues. But if you projected a veteran for a 20-20 season and he's now at 0-0, then I'd have faith that he will still end up at 20-20 and hold on to him.
CALL THE COPS AJ, ORTIZ IS KILLING ME!!! What's your take on his slow start? Its gotta get better, right?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Many Ortiz Q's... but what's different today than before the season started? Nothing. If you trust that you know how to evaluate a player in the spring, then have faith and hang in there. If you don't have faith in your predictive abilities, then why trust your new gut feeling that he'll continue to struggle? Either way, you hold on to him at least for a few more weeks.
Good Morning AJ, Please tell me your thoughts about Randy Johnson. Do you expect a solid season and would you drop one of the following: Weaver, Meche, Volstad, Kuroda? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
I still think Randy has enough in the tank for the season as a whole, but that's with a lot of refills. Meaning, he'll still be able to give you 5-6 solid innings in September, but never more than that along the way. So, the win total will be depressed, as will the K total, but the K/9 might be just fine. I would not drop Meche or Kuroda for him, but I'd consider Weaver and Volstad.
Lancer (Torrance, CA)
What's your take on Sean Marshall from the Cubs? Sleeper Potential? How many wins? Would you start him today?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I actually would start him today. The Cards have struggled vs. lefties. However, in general, I'm not high on Cubs pitchers, and don't expect longterm success. 10-12 wins maybe.
Is it me or is Kershaw being crazily overrate right now? I mean, he's good - but he's had 2 games against 2 of the absolute worst teams in baseball. Seems like a great sell high to me.
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Well, with his next start at Houston, why not ride him further... I don't think he's Koufax just yet, but he's solid. If you can get your price for him, be my guest... if not, enjoy the ride.
Can Ian Kinsler get some respect now from ESPN? to think he was rated behind Pedroia
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
And I still would. Look, I like Ian, but the Orioles pitching staff is horrible and he did nothing against the Tigers. Talk to me after Pedroia gets his four chances at the O's.
AJ Im in AL only 4x4.I am in need of pitching. Would you trade Vlad for Halladay?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Kramer, I would in a heartbeat. Vlad may well be enshrined in Cooperstown someday, but he's a shell of his former self, whereas Halladay will challenge for the Cy Young this season. No-brainer.
Name game: Ricky Romero is the next.....
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Hi AJ-I'm thing of trading J.Schafer and T. Hanson to a Braves fan for J Werth and P. Maholm. Is this a good trade for me or am I giving up too much strikeout potential. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Hanson isn't going to come up until the team knows for certain that a) Jo-Jo Reyes can't pitch in the majors and/or 2) Glavine is definitely a goner. So, I'd make the deal assuming this is not a keeper.
Kemp? Will he ever get out of the 7th hole? He's the only guy in the lineup who's been consistently hitting! Shouldn't he bat second w/ his power, speed potential?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I think in general people get way too hung up on lineup position. Like you said, he's the only guy in the lineup hitting. So regardless of where he is in the lineup, he's not getting protected, nor is he getting driven in by the guys behind him...
Hey AJ. I'm in a H2H league and winning each pitching category by a pretty good amount. Do I start Liriano today? A bad start from him could really mess up my ERA and WHIP, but he is Francisco Liriano. Thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
If you're a guy who likes to stream, or pull pitchers late in the week, then go ahead and pull him. You either feel comfortable with your lead and his outing doesn't matter, or you don't.
I need to fill 3B and there aren't many waiver options. Who do you like in an OPS league, Pedro Feliz or Joe Crede?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
For OPS, I like Feliz.
Justin (St Paul)
I know its early and he will probably come around soon, but for today would you sit Rollins for Y Escobar?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
If you try to guess when hitters will come around to the day and at-bat, you'll be wrong far more than you are right. I stick with my studs, barring days off or weather concerns.
Will Lincecum turn it around? Too many innings last year?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
I just think we've been seeing the video game version of Lincecum so far. It's not the number of innings I worry about - it's how hard you work in them, but yeah, that pitch count did go over 110 far too often last season for my taste. However, I still see a 15-win season for Timmy.
Brett (Myrtle Beach, SC)
Please help me out AJ...when is your best guesstimate as to when Wieters will come up? 15 team roto keeper league with no bench and he is available. How soon do I pull the trigger on dropping someone for him?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
The whole contract issue clouds it... there's no set date for when that "contract clock" kicks in, because it all has to do with how many other prospects get called up and when their service dates start in relation to his... but as long as the O's are winning with this lousy pitching staff, I see no reason to call Wieters up any time soon.
Dino (from the Bar & Grill)
Speaking of slow starters, what's up with Carlos Gomez? Should I stick with him or go with somebody like Lewis, Francoeur or even Endy Chaver?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
If he's not getting on base (which he is not) then he's of no use to you, because you likely drafted him for speed. I'd much rather go with the very underrated Fred Lewis and see where that takes me.
Mikey (Rochester, NY)
Need some advice on Nolasco...are you a believer in what he did last year?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
I am, and ranked him very high in my pre-season rankings. He and Johnson are going to be a one-two punch that few teams will be able to survive this season.
Jordan (Chicago, IL)
I need another closer, but do have Jason Motte. Should I stick with him, or pickup someone like Chris Perez or Manny Corpas?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
I think it's not too long before Corpas reclaims the Rockies job. I'd grab him before he does so.
Do I start D.Lee or J.Thome in my Util spot today?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Read the Daily Notes... D. Lee is not the greatest hitter versus Adam Wainwright. I sit him.
Please help AJ! Do I cut Carpenter or Escobar - I have Lacker filling up my DL spot, so need to cut one of the 2.
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
I'd cut Escobar. While Carpenter may be out for quite a while, the injury isn't really pitching related, and I don't need two injured arms from the same team.
Andrus already has 10 runs hitting 9th in the Texas lineup. How many can we expect from him?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
The Rangers, as a team, don't have too much problem scoring... I'd be willing to bet 80 runs.
Will (Trade City)
Wright for Kinsler and Cain who wins?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
But it's not Wright for Kinsler and Cain... it's Wright and the player you're not going to be starting at 2B and the pitcher you're removing from your lineup for the guy who replaces Wright at 3B and Kinsler and Cain. All trades need to be judged in their complete form.
Ameer (Bloomington, IN)
As a Hoffman owner, should I risk dropping Villenueva for Ryan Franklin? I'm thinking Franklin could take the job and run with it, whereas Villenueva will lose the job in a couple weeks no matter what.
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Don't necessarily agree about Villanueva, but I do agree with you on Franklin. So, it's probably at worst a wash, and at best a huge upside.
You always make snide comments regarding streaming. Are you telling me that you plug in every starter picher on your roster each week and never skip a start? I read all of your stuff because you have differing opinions than most, but please consider toning down your constant disdain for people who play within the league rules.
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Leigh, make no mistake, I despise streaming, and as such, I only play in leagues where there are limits to it. And no, in the few H2H leagues I play in, I do not pull pitchers late for empty roster spots late in the week to avoid "negative stats" - I consider that to be tantamount to cheating. Having said that, let me be clear - if you play in a league where a tactic is within the rules - have at it! I simply choose to not play in leagues where it is in the rules... and I do not apologize for disliking the concept.
John (Hoboken, NJ)
Need upgrade at 3B and Edwin Encarnacion is available. Do I drop Milledge to pick him up? When do you think he will be back?.
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Milledge will probably be back in a month or so, but I wouldn't wait for him... the OF spot has far better options available who aren't at Triple-A and I wouldn't hesitate to grab a player who CAN help me now.
Do you start the Kenshin Sensation against the hot Marlins today in a 14-team mixed roto league? Thanks AJ!
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
I'm not feeling Kenshin today, dawg. Not my best for him for me.
Ellsbury, buy low now or wait a little longer?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
I'll buy on him. The average should improve very soon and he's probably as low a price as he will be this season.
I cut Nady and picked up Swisher as his replacement yesterday. He's obviously been hot this spring, but is he a serviceable starter for the long haul in a 10-team league?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Absolutely. He's going to play nearly everyday and probably end up with 500 ABs.
nate t (wichita)
what kind of line can we expect out of ARod upon his return ??
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
I was not high on A-Rod before the injury, and I'm not raising him higher now. That said, I still had him as my top AL-3B, so I see 25 HR-80 RBI if he returns in June as very possible.
quick question please
where do we find these "daily notes" ??
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Go to the ESPN Fantasy page - click on Baseball and they'll be there. Today's link is http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/baseball/flb/outOfTheBox?page=ootb090416
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Whoops! That was Out of the Box.... http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=mlbnotes090416
Better than Longoria?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
When I thought he was playing the whole season, yes. With a two month head start for Evan - probably not.
Hey AJ, Is Nelson Cruz for real, or should I deal him before he looks like a AAAA player again?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
I'm of the opinion that on any other team he'd be a Quad-A guy. In that lineup, the stats are probably worth hanging on to.
Lannan is pitching tonight?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
No - the notes are published the day before, so the Phils-Nats rainout wasn't accounted for. Wednesday scheduled starters will go today.
at the end of the season who is higher on the player rater Joey Votto or Corey Hart?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
June?! Dude I'll be back in early May...
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
There's back, and then there's "back"
Which OF rookie are you the highest on and why? D. Fowler, T. Snider, or J. Schafer. Thanks!
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Fowler, but I'm a sucker for a switch-hitter with that upright stance.
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
Thanks everyone - our time is done for today. Another chat follows at 3pm. Appreciate the Q's as always, and wish we could get to everyone's. We'll see you the next time on Villa Allegre!
