We're getting Gary Horton of Scouts Inc. right now! He'll take us through the first part of the first round.
Gary Horton (3:56 PM)
We always have drama leading up to each draft. I don't think I've ever seen the intrigue around one player and that's Mark Sanchez. It seems like the whole top of this draft, including trades, hinges on what happens with him. I think that will make for an exciting first couple of hours.
Gary Horton (3:57 PM)
I think the other exciting thing about today, though I'm not sure how likely it is to happen, is the trade of veteran players, like Boldin or Edwards. But those are easier to talk about than actually do.
Kevin (Marquette MI)
The contract that the Lions gave Stafford in unbelievable. Don't you think that the money is going to hamper the Lions more than Stafford could ever help?
Gary Horton (4:00 PM)
Well, it might look to some people that they overpaid him, but I think it was critical for the Lions to have Stafford signed before the draft. THat may have made them more generous. There was an awareness of the economic times. The last thing you want is a prolonged negotiation with millions of dollars on the table when people have a hard time putting food on the table. There is a concern about the money given to rookies. I think we'll have a rookie cap talked about in the next CBA. Not only is Stafford making more than many veteran QBs, but it sets the scale for the rest of the draft. The next player taken, even if it's a OT, his agent will ask for similar money, despite him being an OT versus a QB. I was told absolutely that the Lions were not going to make a No. 1 selection without him having signed. That may have given the agent more leverage.
Gavin (Wisconsin)
What do the Rams need to do to go back to the Greatest Show on Turf?
Gary Horton (4:02 PM)
Well, I think they'll probably go OT here. That's a huge need. They have to protect the edges. If I were the Rams, I would look long and hard at Mark Sanchez. Marc Bulger has taken a lot of hits over the years. I don't know how many years he has left. A guy like Sanchez is so NFL ready that he could turn this franchise around quickly. I've heard all sorts of rumors. The safe bet is probably OT.
Chad (Cincinnati)
Do you think OchoCInco is going anywhere?
Gary Horton (4:03 PM)
I don't think so. I don't think the Bengals have any interest in moving him. It's always been their style to not give in to players' whims and set a precedent. This team has already lost TJ Houshmanzadeh. You can't take away all of Carson Palmer's weapons. There has been a lot more movement on Boldin and Edwards than there has been on Chad Johnson in recent days.
JByous (Connecticut)
Stafford will be a bust
Eric (Montreal)
Best sports day of the yeard hands down
Jason (Iowa)
What area do the Vikings need to improve to make some noise in the playoffs?
Gary Horton (4:06 PM)
I think the safest pick would probably be an OT. That would fill a need and a lot of people are talking about Eben Britton as being a nice fit. I think the Vikings are in a place where they could go in a lot of direction. Age is starting to become an issue. I think they could look at WR, CB. I think they would love for OT Michael Oher to drop to them, but that's probably unlikely. They may be in a position to almost pick the best athlete available. I would say OT and WR are the two places I would look. But, I would also add that this is a deep and talented group of centers. So, they could surprise us with a center or CB.
Sportatics (Phillay)
I think Stafford will do well, people forget the Lions lost more than a few close games last year.
ryan (cincinnati)
awful lot of money for someone this has not thrown one pass...
Dan (Chicago)
Hey Gary, did you like the Bears trade for Denver QB Jay Cutler? Did they give up too much? (1st round/3rd round and Kyle Orton).
Gary Horton (4:09 PM)
I do not think they gave up too much. I did like the trade from a Bears standpoint. It's so hard to find a franchise guy in this league. I don't think the Bears have been stable at that position since Jim McMahon, almost 25 years ago. Now, in theory you have a franchise player solidified for the next 10 years. Now you can try to build the rest of your team. I did not like the way Cutler handled the situation. I think that will all be forgotten. You only have to look as far as Denver and what they lost to realize that this is a franchise that already had tremendous defensive needs. They would have preferred to spend this whole draft on defense, but now they have to reevaluate the offense. Losing Cutler set this franchise back years. These guys are too tough to find.
Luke (North Carolina)
What would you suggest the Saints do?
Gary Horton (4:11 PM)
I think the Saints have more pressing defensive needs than on offense. To me, the perfect guy for them would be OSU CB/S Malcolm Jenkins who could play in a Cover 2, play the deep back, cover the slot receiver. He's a good football player who solidifies the defense. They need a guy who can roam the deep part of the field. They could also go CB, DT to upgrade this unit.
Gary Horton (4:13 PM)
But I think the surprise pick here could be a running back, possibly Beanie Wells. I don't think they consider Reggie Bush as an every down back. I think Wells would give them a great one-two punch. They always seem to be trying to replace McAllister. That would surprise everyone if Sean Payton improves the running game, even though the defense needs are higher.
Gary Horton (4:14 PM)
I have been told that as much as the Rams love Mark Sanchez, they have so much money tied up in Marc Bulger right now, it makes it difficult to trade him or pay that much money in the QB position for Bulger and Sanchez. If that weren't the case, this would be a no-brainer.
Gary Horton (4:14 PM)
But I've been told by good sources that the reason to pass on Sanchez is the Bulger situation.
Brendan (Boston)
Shoudl the Psts go for the best LB available or addres the secondary issues?
Gary Horton (4:18 PM)
What you'll see the Patriots do, with so many picks, is what they always do, concentrate on defense. They can move around, either slightly up or slightly down. Nobody is better than Bill Belichick of plugging players into his system based on what their strengths are. He's always in the market for hybrid players with many skills. If I'm not mistaken, they have 6 selections in the top 97. I think they could easily go DE/OLB, a guy like Clay Matthews or maybe even a Brian Cushing. I know they're obsessed with improving their pass rush off the edge, especially with Mike Vrabel gone. If they dropped, they could go with Rey Maualuga. They could always go CB. But I can give you a long shot in this situation. It wouldn't shock me if they took a RB here. As much as they throw the ball, it's partially because they haven't had a guy that can give them 25 carries. It wouldn't be shocking to see them take a guy like Knowshon Moreno from Georgia.
Gary Horton (4:20 PM)
A couple of quick things to always remember about the Patriots, they have such a strong lockerroom that they can take a guy with a questionable background like Vontae Davis, because he'll be pushed by the veterans around him. No. 2, keep in mind Belichick's great relationships with a lot of college coaches, especially Urban Meyer at Florida. That's why even a guy like Percy Harvin could jump into the mix. You can bet that no guy will have more information on Harvin than Belichick.
Dan (Chicago)
Can Jason Smith be as good as Orlando Pace for the Rams?
Gary Horton (4:22 PM)
I certainly think he can be in that category. He has size, athletic ability, excellent feet and really high character. All attributes that Pace had. He should solidify that LT position for the next 10-12 years. As we all know, LTs are hard to find. He is probably one of the top 2-3 safest picks in this draft. What will be interesting to me now is what his agent does in terms of trying to slot himself behind Stafford. Could that possibly lead to a holdout? The difference between a QB and OT is huge. I don't think his contract will be anywhere near where Stafford's was.
Andrew Knox [via mobile]
which team needs a quarterback like mark sanchez the most?
Gary Horton (4:27 PM)
I happen to think that Seattle at 4 makes terrific sense. There are injury and durability concerns in Seattle. That's a West Coast offense that Sanchez could sit for a year or two. They would have their QB for the future. Having said that, if I'm the New York Jets, I desperately want this guy to be my franchise. I'm moving into a new building. I know this kid can handle the pressure. He would be wildly popular. I dont think they have a QB that they have any confidence in ready to step in. The one team that really surprises me is Washington. They seem obsessed with getting the guy and they might be destroying Jason Campbell's confidence. They made a run at Cutler. They seem to be obsessed with Sanchez. I don't think they can make a move to get up unless it's to No. 8. I think Campbell is a quality NFL QB. But giving that much to go up? It looks to me like Daniel Snyder dying to be a player on draft day.
Ken (Philly)
Jackson over the best player in the draft Curry ?? Bad move on K.C part
Gary Horton (4:31 PM)
Two weeks ago, I might have agreed with you. I think Jackson has really moved up the draft board. I think the reason is that he really fits what they're trying to do. They're switching to a 3-4 defense. They want a big defensive end that can be physical against the run in the 3-4 and give them an upfield push. Because so many teams have gone to a 3-4, Jackson in recent days has risen up the draft board. Curry is an excellent football player and a very safe pick. I think what people became concerned with in the last couple of weeks, we don't know what kind of edge pass rusher he can be. We'd like to think and hope that he could be an edge rusher in the 3-4, but we haven't seen that on film. I've talked to a lot of people who really like him, but the thing that comes back to me is that there's not a lot of "wow" factor. Everything's solid, but there's nothing that's game-changing. He might be one of those guys that's so steady and solid, maybe you lose your passion for him a little bit. If Mark Sanchez doesn't go to Seattle, I think this is a perfect spot for him.
tim (illinois)
I cant believe KC passed up Arron Curry. Seattle is so lucky. They get the best player in the draft. He is guarenteed not a bust. Go Seattle!
Ty (ID)
When do you see the first trade happening?
Gary Horton (4:33 PM)
I think all of these teams at the top would welcome conversations to get out, but the problem is it's hard to get someone to come in. No. 1, what they have to pay the player this high. No. 2, the draft picks they have to give up. I think Cleveland at No. 5 here would like to move down. I'm not sure they will. I think the key spot will be Jacksonville at No. 8. That seems to be where all the action is and the Jaguars have made it very well known that that pick is for sale. If Sanchez gets to 8, that's where I think we'll see the Jets or Redskins to try and move in there.
David (Chas., SC)
Here is where it will now get interesting, Curry will be the best player in the draft falling to 4,5,6... thats crazy...
Silver (California)
Seattle Pick up Curry? shocker
nem (detroit)
will aoron curry be a bust?
Gary Horton (4:35 PM)
I don't think he'll be a bust. He's too talented and too versatile. He may be one of those guys that does so many things well, that's it's tough to say what he does best. He'll be in a 4-3 in Seattle. He's probably in a perfect situation because he can play that 4-3 OLB that can drop into coverage, play in space and he can probably put his hand in the dirt and come off the edge. He'll be a perfect LB for Seattle and he should be able to step right in for Seattle. You have to like this Seattle LB corp.
Jeff (Boston)
What will the browns do with their pick if they are smart?
Gary Horton (4:38 PM)
You would think strongly that Cleveland would take a defensive player here. They're switching to a 3-4. Even though they have Shaun Rodgers, a lot of people think BJ Raji would be a perfect fit. I would expect defense, they have so many needs there. They could go WR. With Stallworth's future in doubt and Edwards possibly gone and Winslow gone. I would expect them to load up on the defensive line or take a WR, which is probably not their style. But let me throw a curve at you...could they take Mark Sanchez here, with the idea of controlling what they do with him in a trade. They have Anderson and Quinn, but then they take Sanchez. They could turn to the Jets and the Redskins and say, let's make a deal. That's difficult to do and it's dangerous, but it isn't out of the realm of possibilities.
Gary Horton (4:39 PM)
I think they would like to trade this pick. But my initial guess is that they'll go big here and I would pick Raji with Crabtree a second choice.
Cale (IN)
jets are gonna take sanchez
texanrich (houston)
Prediction: Jets Redskins trade
richard (delaware)
great move Jets
Gary Horton (4:42 PM)
I don't know yet what they gave up, but this is one of those situations where you overpay to get a guy who can change your franchise around. I think this gives the Jets an absolute identity in the Rex Ryan era. No matter what it costs, it's a brilliant move. Now you have your face of the franchise, a guy who's ready for New York. you don't have to mess around with another guy, he's your starter from Day 1. I love that the Jets had the guts to move up and live with their convictions. With that said, I'm guessing the Jets gave up a lot.
Jonathan (New York)
YES JETS! MARK SANCHEZ IS OURS!
rick (SO CAL)
Go Sanchez
I'm Made Of Lotion (Lotionopolis)
Wonder what the JEts gave up for the pick
Gary Horton (4:44 PM)
You also had a feel that Cleveland in looking at a defensive lineman and a WR is totally aware that there are still quality players later in the first round at both of those positions with a much less salary hit. So, I think for the Browns, there wasn't a guy that they were in love with to pay that kind of money. This is a team with a lot of needs. They trade back to 17. In their mind, they'll get almost as good a player at 17 as they would have 5. Or close.
Dan (Chicago)
New York New York. Eli's town for now, but Jets close out the stadium this year. Sanchez steps into a great situation. Best move that could have TO sanchez
Gary Horton (4:45 PM)
I think Mark Sanchez is absolutely esctatic. He will be a marketing machine, probably better than Eli. He's comfortable in the limelight, having played at USC.
Gary Horton (4:48 PM)
I don't know that I've ever watched a player become so popular with NFL teams through the draft process. Every team that's interviewed this guy, including the Jets, when the owner, GM and coach visited him when they were at the owners meetings on the west coast, everyone came away saying we want him as our face of our franchise. Much like Matt Ryan a year ago. That's a hard thing to find. I think this town will fall in love with him. I think even the tough Jets fans will cheer the day they picked him.
Steve (Baltimore)
Jets gave up way too much
Gary Horton (4:51 PM)
No. I think when you're a new coach coming into a situation like Ryan is with the Jets, you want your own players. You're building your own roster. He basically gave Eric Mangini three of his old players. I don't think any of these guys were franchise type guys that were untouchable. I think in terms of the player swapping, Mangini gets players that he knows and Ryan gets rid of players he didn't draft. If you take the players out of the situation, they only gave up a second round pick. I thought they would have had to give up another 1 or 2 picks. I think the Jets got out of this good. Cleveland moves back 12 spots. In their mind, they can get a similar player at 17 to what they were going to get at 5. They also pick up 3 new players that will add depth to their roster.
Chad (Marquette, MI)
Bengals take another player with attitude issues. Go figure. Perfect fit.
Greg (Louisville)
So what did the Jets exactly give up?
Buzzmaster (4:53 PM)
This year's first and second round picks and three players.
Gary Horton (4:55 PM)
How ironic is it that Mark Sanchez came to New York to do all the draft obligations and then left to be at home with his family and now has to turn around and go back to New York, when he could have been about 20 minutes away.
Kevin (Toronto)
Do the Bengals just try to find the guy with a checkered past and add him to their roster or is a fluke?
Gary Horton (4:58 PM)
I'm usually right on the Bengals bandwagon in terms of what they do. With this one, in all fairness, as badly as Smith botched the draft process early, I think he made solid amends late. He really did a good job recently. After a lousy combine and a so-so workout day, he settle down. When you watch him on film, you really like him. He does a lot of things well. I think a lot of credit has to go to Nick Saban. He convinced teams that he's not a back kid. His heart is in the right place. I think people became a lot more comfortable with that. I think everybody probably looked at Smith as a much less risk toady than he was two months ago.
Gary Horton (4:58 PM)
It's a tremendous need. He can protect Carson Palmer for a lot of years.
Alex Ferguson (London, England)
Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree? Are you kidding?
Gary Horton (5:01 PM)
Well, this is as vintage as an Al Davis pick as we'll ever see. We know they had a tremendous need at WR. I believe the reason they made this pick was all about speed. Heyward-Bey has rare speed. He's probably the biggest deep receiver in the draft. He has size. He's an electric player. But he has considerable less discipline and concentration. He doesn't have a lot of huge production and he's an inconsistent route runner. This guy probably has top 10 athleticism, but the reason he was expected to go late in the first round was that lack of production and consistency. I could see them passing on Michael Crabtree, because they didn't have an accurate 40 time on him. It would have been a reach for Percy Harvin. But, why in the world, if you wanted Heyward-Bey and you loved his speed, why wouldn't you trade back 10-11 spots, knowing you could still get him.
Gary Horton (5:03 PM)
This is a guy that was expected to go in the last 10 picks of the first round and the Raiders could have easily gone down 10 spots and still gotten him. This is where it's difficult for people to understand why some teams don't pay attention to the overall board and have a feeling where players are going to go. You can still get the guy that you want but at a lot cheaper price. This is a speed pick with a risk-reward outcome that is off the charts.
Bootstrap (Atlanta, GA)
The could picked up Maclin.... he has spped too
Sal (Poughkeepsie, NY)
I agree. Trading out of the spot would have been a no brainer?
brian (middlebury, vt)
wonder why the raiders are always such losers. Crabtree!
Eric (North Carolina)
If Davis loves speed, why not Maclin
Gary Horton (5:06 PM)
Maclin ran a 4.45 at the combine, which is good and explosive, but Heyward-Bey ran a 4.25 with a 38-inch vertical jump. I can also tell you that not only do the Raiders and Al Davis love speed, but they've had a philosophy for years that a vertical jump is an absolute indicator of explosiveness. I think they were so enamored by speed.
Gary Horton (5:06 PM)
A little bit of a system guy. But this looks like strictly an Al Davis pick.
John (Minneapolis)
With all the needs that JAX has, did they make the right choice with Eugene Monroe?
Gary Horton (5:09 PM)
I am surprised because they did pick up Tre Thomas, although he's 34 years old and he doesn't have a lot of years left. I think this was the case where it was the best player on their board pick. My guess is that they did not think that Monroe would be there. They have tremendous needs on building their DL and Raji is still there. Most people didn't think that Crabtree wouldn't be there at 8 and we know what kind of disaster they've been at WR. Without looking at their board, my guess is that they had too high a grade on Monroe to pas son him. There's nothing wrong with the best player available pick.
Ryan (Dallas)
Crabtree or Raji here right
Gary Horton (5:12 PM)
I think they've already made a decision on Raji. I think it makes great sense, because Green Bay is converting to a 3-4 defense. Raji is a perfect guy to step right in at NT. He could also play DT if they switch to a 4-3. He can control the middle and eat up blockers. He is someone that they can really build around. I believe that they had some last second discussions when Crabtree dropped. I think this was a draft that they were concentrating on defense. This is another case where a guy was probably expected to go 5-6 spots earlier and he dropped in their lap. I think that makes the value very good.
Gary Horton (5:12 PM)
Although, they could have gone OLB or OT, but I really like the pick of Raji, because you can build this defense from the inside out and you have your anchor inside now.
Troy (San Antonio)
It looks like Green Bay is taking Raji. Can San Francisco really pass up on Crabtree?
Gary Horton (5:16 PM)
Well, I think he's falling right now maybe partly because players are dropping to teams with bigger needs. I think there's always a feeling that you can wait and get WRs later in the first round. I happen to think that even though we see everything on film on Crabtree, I think he hasn't run an official 40 and I think that's probably a concern.
Gary Horton (5:17 PM)
You also have to always wonder if teams think that this is a system guy. I happen to think that Crabtree would be productive and outstanding in any system, but at Texas Tech, this is a very unique offense. You could have some teams wondering if that made him look better than he really is. I don't think that's the case, because I think he's an outstanding football player. We don't have a 40 time and we always think we can get WRs later.
Bill (Janesville, WI)
NINERS CRABTREE!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!
Skylar (Melrose,MN)
Is Bey the biggest surprise of the draft, or do you see a bigger one happening later on?
Gary Horton (5:19 PM)
I can't imagine a bigger surprise in this first round. It's not that he's not a good player. He is. He has been a hot guy in the last couple of weeks. You knew he was a guy on the move and moving up. The surprise is on where he was taken. As we already mentioned, you can love a guy, but taking him closer to where he belongs by trading down. I think that's the big surprise. I thought the Raiders made a tremendous reach. It's a case of Al Davis sees a player he likes and doesn't care what teams around him are doing.
Chris (Bethel, CT)
Wow!!
jut (vermont)
bout time
mike (ri)
crabtree is good
jeremy (california)
finally smart 49ers
Matt (Seattle)
Only problem is they don't have anyone to throw to him!
Kane (Los Angeles)
Was Crabtree a good pick for the 49ers here?
Gary Horton (5:24 PM)
I think the 49ers were absolutely shocked that he dropped to them at 10. I think everyone felt like the ceiling was at 8. I think this was again a value pick. They needed a WR. They have a pretty good group of WRs but they don't have that No. 1 go-to guy. Now, I think they can build on that. They had other needs. They were looking at a pass rusher. THey needed a CB. They needed some help in the OL. This was a case of taking the best player available on the board. I think it will be a very well received pick. What's interesting is they might see a lot of Jerry Rice in Michael Crabtree.
jabbers (pa)
i like the move
Al (Mobile)
Yes it was a good pick..
Dave (Connecticut)
Who is Buffalo going with here?
Gary Horton (5:26 PM)
I think there's no question by trading Jason Peters they have a tremendous need for an OT. But I think they go DE here. Dick Jauron is under a lot of pressure and I think they'd like to get a pass rusher. They only had 4 sacks from their DEs. They need a 4-3 edge guy like Aaron Maybin. I know they like Penn State players.
Gary Horton (5:27 PM)
He doesn't have great 4-3 DE size, but he's explosive, productive and they want double digit sacks out of him in 2008, which is absolutely a necessity. This is a perfect blend of filling a need at the right spot. The only question may be is that he may be a little bit of a one-year wonder. He doesn't have a deep body of work.
Gary Horton (5:28 PM)
This guy has a great first step quickness off the edge.
Daniel (Michigan)
Bills should've drafted Orakpo he's more athletic and quck
Gary Horton (5:29 PM)
A lot of people love Maybin's first step. He's rare. He's exciting. I think Buffalo is really fond of Penn State players, not that that is the reason. They have similar size. There may be a feeling that he was a little more explosive off the edge. It could have gone either way.
Gary Horton (5:30 PM)
Both of these guys can play in the 4-3. It may be that there is a feeling that Maybin can step in and play a little quicker. I am a little surprised that Orakpo is still on the board.
eas (austin)
bills couldnt take orakpo hes to soft
Bennett (Pennsylvania)
orakpo
Kade (Louisiana)
i agree i am suprised that Orakpo is still there
Suze Q (Austin)
good pick
Levi (Indianapolis)
WOW didnt see that coming
Walter (Boone, NC)
Wow, how unexpected was Moreno being picked to the Broncos?
Gary Horton (5:35 PM)
Well, obviously they've had success before with another Georgia RB, Terell Davis, but they didn't get him until later in the draft. They overhauled this position in free agency. They brought in three guys. This has always been a franchise that has gotten production at the RB position. They've found guys they can plug in. I like Moreno's talent, but this had the necessity of an all-defense picks in the first round. This was a horrible defense, with maybe the worst DL in the NFL. You had some guys that fit into the 3-4 front they're trying to go to. I don't understand why you take a back with so many defensive needs. It seems that the philosophy was defense, defense, defense going in. You can see that Josh McDaniels as an offensive coach, you can see that's where his sentiments are. There were too many good defensive players on the board.
Daniel (Louisiana)
If Saints pick Wells defense will continue to be porous.
Gary Horton (5:38 PM)
I know the Saints are on the board now. While they have some strong defensive needs, such as an OLB and S, Malcolm Jenkins could be a guy that fits perfectly into the secondary. They could take Everette Brown. But a pick that wouldn't shock me here would be Beanie Wells from Ohio State. I think that as explosive as Reggie Bush is, this team really wants a RB that can give them 20-25 carries a game and eat some clock and not force Bush to have to do a lot of inside running. It might look like a little bit of a luxury pick with 2-3 really good defensive players on the board, but it would not surprise me to see them go in that direction.
phil gaskill (manchester, england)
if the saints cant trade down....its wells here
Mark (Washington)
Thats about where orakpo should have fallen, he was overrated coming into the draft, but with that said Denver still should have gone defense for sure.
Gary Horton (5:39 PM)
Even a guy like Brian Cushing. Defense makes the most sense. I would take Malcolm Jenkins right here.
Sean (Carbondale)
The Saints will go with Wells here.
Kev (Pittsburgh)
i think they could go with malcom jenkins
Jim (Boston)
I would also take Jenkins here and not a running back
Christian (London)
This is the best pick of the draft
Dave (Louisiana)
Excellent move for the Saints taking Jenkins! Got it tigh
Nick P. (New Bedford, MA)
Nice move Saints!
Paul (Jacksonville)
Good call New Orleans. They filled the biggest need.
Tony (Las Vegas)
Smart pick by the Saints
Gary Horton (5:43 PM)
Yes, I think it's an excellent pick. It fills a need. Some people question whether this guy has elite CB speed, but there is no question that he has the range and size to be an excellent safety. He's not an elite speed guy, but he has good functional speed. This is a huge weakness for the Saints. He can play the Cover 2. He can be a zone off corner. He's just a good, steady football player and there's only one of them that really fits here. That's him and it fills their need. THis is one of those perfect matches of value and need.
Gary Horton (5:43 PM)
Defensive coordinator Gregg Williamson is creative and he can figure out a way to use Jenkins.
Randy Erdahl (Minnesota)
Saints are going to make the superbowl this year!
mario (lubbock)
Houst on can go alot of ways here, who will they draft?
Gary Horton (5:45 PM)
I think their No. 1 need is defense. I think they want an OLB. A guy that can drop into space in their 4-3. Their first four needs are LB, S, CB and DT.
Gary Horton (5:45 PM)
I think a guy like Cushing could be a perfect fit here, with his versatility.
Chuck (Minnesota)
Was Cushing a better fit then Matthews?
Gary Horton (5:47 PM)
I think they're similar because they're both so versatile. Cushing can play in the 3-4 or 4-3. He can take on blocks. He's really good in coverage. There's a little bit of a durability issue. The thing that probably drops Clay Matthews a little bit is that he's really only a one-year starter. He's made himself into a good player. There's no reason to make you think he won't be able to do some things. But I think you have alittle more to go on with Cushing with his overall production. But you have to worry about his durability. But these guys are almost identical.
Gary Horton (5:47 PM)
It's a solid pick.
Jeremy (Houston)
Solid pick. Needed an OLB bad. Chargers pick Wells
Gary Horton (5:48 PM)
I expect Cushing to start as a rookie.
Cody (Cincy)
Will San Diego take Wells even though they have 2 strong RB's already?
Gary Horton (5:50 PM)
RB is an exotic pick here. Their biggest need is really at DE. They need at 3-4 DE that can anchor the defense. That's what they like to find. They could have used a safety, but Jenkins is gone. They could use a CB. Rey Maualuga intrigues them. Wells is an exotic pick because Sproles is franchise tagged here and LT is a one-year guy at this stage of his career. There's not a lot of depth there and both guys could be gone next year. But AJ Smith goes with the best player on the board. He loves athleticism. He could gamble with a guy like Vontae Davis. The good thing about them is they don't have major holes.
Gary Horton (5:51 PM)
I would guess with Jenkins gone, they could go with Michael Oher. I don't think they go WR. I could see three defensive guys that intrigue me, Everette Brown, Matthews and Maualuga.
Bill (montauk, NY)
don't be too shocked with another SC LB here...
Justice (Virginia)
Rey Maualuga will give that defense an identity.
Steve (New Orleans)
WOW
Bob (Boston, MA)
English? What?
Cooper (Los Angeles)
Did he just say Northern Illinois?
Jared (Austin)
Where did that pick come from?
Gary Horton (5:54 PM)
I will say this. I think they were looking at OLB, if one of those guys fell. They had several directions they could go. A lot of us would say why not Clay Matthews, why not Maualuga. They're covering themselves a little bit. I'll also say this, AJ Smith doesn't care what other people think. He takes a guy if he likes him and he doesn't care. They love this kid's work ethic. He's a good athlete. A lot of us might say that it's too high, but you're getting to the point of the draft that you can't get too cute. This gives them more explosiveness off the edge, if he's what we think he is.
Gary Horton (5:55 PM)
It's an OK pick. They don't have to be married to need.
Gary Horton (5:57 PM)
We're halfway through the first round and as we're handing off to Doug Kretz, the drama in the first part of this draft goes to the Jets, having the guts to move up to get Sanchez. This is a win-win trade for the Jets and Cleveland. The biggest surprise is what the Raiders did with Heyward-Bey at 7 and not trading down. Although it's possible that they didn't have any trade partners to come up. The rest of the first 16 picks went a lot like we thought they would. Although you could certainly argue that San Diego reached a little bit to get Larry English. Though I would hesitate to second guess AJ Smith. As we see teams stay where they're at because they don't want to deal with the money. I think this will get a lot more interesting when the Patriots get involved with all of their picks on Day 1.
Buzzmaster (5:58 PM)
Thanks Gary! Up next is Doug Kretz!
Doug Kretz (6:00 PM)
Big day.. Lots of ??? picks.. Any top choices for questionable pick of the day?
Mark (Cleveland)
What are the Browns thinking,? Now they do not have a first round pick.
Doug Kretz (6:02 PM)
Tryi ng to stockpile later picks.. They will be doing the same thing New England has done, Atlanta is doing and KC is now doing (as well as Denver).. Instead of looking for the high profile pick they are looking for players that fit their "system"
Evan (Tennessee)
Tampa was clearly concerned that Denver would take Freeman at 18.
Mac (Chicago)
Heyward-Bey is the most surprising pick to me. Raiders could have got him and an extra pick
Doug Kretz (6:03 PM)
That's what most people think.. They could have gotten him with a late round pick.. Unfortunately Al Davis is infatuated with confirmed speed and didn't feel like anyone could GUARANTEE that he would still be there later on..
Buck (Denver)
top questionable pick of the day is knowshon Moreno going to Denver
Kevin (New York)
Moreno will own with denvers rushing offense
Shane (San Diego)
Whats up with A.J. picking up English? Why not Maulauga? Or Wells for the future?
Doug Kretz (6:05 PM)
They don't feel confident that Merriman will be back 100% and need more speed coming off the edge. English is supposed to be a big time blitzer off the edge.
Mike (Cedar Rapids IA)
They needed a pass rusher, maualuga does not do that
Doug Kretz (6:06 PM)
There, the Broncos beef up their D line.
jake (new york)
you think if maulauga is available at 20 the lions will be smart enough to take him?
Doug Kretz (6:08 PM)
Probably too soon for him.
Chris (Virginia)
I really think the Freeman pick is going to haunt the Bucs. Freeman decomitted by text message befroe going to KSU. While at KSU he reportedly alienated temmates and late in the year they acted like they really didn't want to play for him. I really question his character.
Doug Kretz (6:09 PM)
I agree.. He was a bit of a reach that early. I don't see him as being a franchise QB.
Rando (Auburn)
Eagles trading up? Who are they going for? They hate big name recievers, so Wells?
Doug Kretz (6:12 PM)
Maclin
Benjamin (Maui, HI)
What's Philly doing?! I love Andy Reid and company on draft day! They are wild!
Stephen (Los Angeles)
Are you surprised the Giants have not made a move to get Edwards or Bouldin?
Doug Kretz (6:14 PM)
Actually, I am.. Still may happen
keith (warren, oh)
who do you feel the browns are waiting to draft?
Doug Kretz (6:14 PM)
How about Wells?
mike (georgia)
which way will the lions go with the 20th pick defense maybe
Doug Kretz (6:17 PM)
How about DE (Johnson?)
Kirk (Wooster,Oh)
Is Wells going to be durable enough for the NFL? Espacially concidering the Brown's O-line?
Doug Kretz (6:17 PM)
You never know.. But he knows how to play in winter conditions..
Doug Kretz (6:20 PM)
TE.. Wow.. guess they couldn't justify drafting a WR so they took a TE.
Matt (Cali)
Did Matt Millen get his job back??
Doug Kretz (6:21 PM)
He's a good TE.. But filling some needs on the defensive side would seem to have made more sense..
Doug Kretz (6:22 PM)
And Cleveland trades their first round pick for??? Just kidding.. They should use this one for ?? Wells?
Steve (Raleigh)
How do you think Miami will pick?
Doug Kretz (6:24 PM)
CB. Butler?
Doug Kretz (6:25 PM)
Browns take.. WOW, Mack - OC from Cal.. You don't, generally take a center that high.
damien (columbus, ohio)
WHAT??
Omar (Ca)
Alex Mack is a solid pick
Bob (Pennsylvaina)
Alex Mack good pick Cleveland needs a good lineman
JacobJ (Cleveland)
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Mack? Come on man, ggive me a break!
Doug Kretz (6:29 PM)
Vikings take Harvin.. Good pick.. He will upgrade them at the skill position
Banks (Oxford, MS)
Should New England look into Michael Oher?
Doug Kretz (6:31 PM)
Cody Brown?
Stetson (Dayton, OH)
I'm kinda bummed that they Cleveland took an OL. Don't they have other needs?
Doug Kretz (6:32 PM)
They definately need a center.. But you don't generally draft center that high
Will (Georgia)
I am still wondering what Atlanta is going to do!!!
Doug Kretz (6:32 PM)
Safety or CB..
cameron (fullerton)
Why didn't cleveland just wait to pick up Mack in the second round? Wouldn't he have still been available?
Doug Kretz (6:37 PM)
Either him or the kid from Oregon would have probably been available.
Joe (Seattle)
Good pick by Balt. Surprised he lasted this long.
Doug Kretz (6:39 PM)
They may have found a replacement for one of the all time greats..
patrick (austin)
falcons should take nicks
Dave (Minneapolis)
Can't believe pats didnt take oher. great trade up by baltimore
John (New York)
i think the ATL is going MLB
Chris (Wisconsin)
Good to see Oher go, great story
Drew (Yorktown, VA)
Oher seems like a great guy. Everette Brown here to the ATL
Doug Kretz (6:40 PM)
Could easily happen
Micah (North Georgia)
ATL got its MLB last year. Either Peria Jerry or Ziggy Hood or Clay Matthews.
Doug Kretz (6:41 PM)
If it's LB, I'd go with Matthews
Doug Kretz (6:42 PM)
good pick for ATL.. They get a run stopper as well as a pass rusher from the inside.
charley (florida)
ooh good pick ATL
Zachary (Toledo, Ohio)
Browns should have taken Wells
Steve (Boston)
so what about the fins?
Doug Kretz (6:44 PM)
Butler - DC
luke (florida)
corner
ScottAngel (Houston, TEXAS)
NE will look to takeDonald Brown after the Maroney facade is over
Tim (boston)
NE is gonna get matthews at 26
DAR (LAS VEGAS)
WHY DONT TEAMS LIKE WELLS
Doug Kretz (6:46 PM)
He could fall to the second round, at this point..
Doug Kretz (6:47 PM)
V. Davis to Miami..
Doug Kretz (6:47 PM)
I'd go wtih Matthews to NE, at this point..
Trevor (Canada)
who are the colts picking
Doug Kretz (6:49 PM)
DT.. How about Jarron Gilbert (San Jose St)
Charles (Pennsylvania)
Wells has injury problems.
Doug Kretz (6:50 PM)
New England looking to trade down, again
craig johnson (va beach)
the pats trade with the giants and the giants take britt
ryan (colorado)
why moreno for denver? he is great and will do well but do you think they should have gone defense both picks
Doug Kretz (6:54 PM)
Not necessarily.. They liked Moreno and didn't really have a franchise RB.. They felt confident that one of the defensive players they liked would be available. With the weather in Denver they need to be able to run the ball effectively.
Zarias (Chicago)
packers move up for Matthews?
Doug Kretz (6:55 PM)
Good pick Zarias (and GB)..
Doug Kretz (6:56 PM)
I like Matthews but when a guy goes from making 17 tackles to 50, something, I wonder if he was a product of the system more than being a first round pick
Brian (Virginia)
Who do you think the best OLB is left in the draft Doug?
Doug Kretz (6:57 PM)
I like Sintim next
Evan (Rochester, NY)
Are the Colts going WR here? Possibly Nicks?
Doug Kretz (6:58 PM)
I see them going D line.
Doug Kretz (7:00 PM)
My time is up for a while, guys.. Tag is taking over for the next hour.
Tag Ribary (7:00 PM)
Hey everybody, Let's keep it rolling. Colts take RB Donald Brown
Joe (Indiana)
Yessss!! Sweet pic Indy!
dub (phx)
I kiind of fell in love with Donald Brown expecting Wells to be gone, if Wells is still there for the Cards is it a no brainer?
Tag Ribary (7:02 PM)
It would fill a need, but if the Cards have questions about his durability he could slip a little further.
kaboo (floriga)
buffalo should pick nick
Albert (Fargo, ND)
Do you see the Lions being a playoff caliber team in the next 5 years after this draft?
Tag Ribary (7:03 PM)
Anything is possible. They are off to a good start so far. A lot can change in 5 years so I wouldn't be surprised.
Drew (New York)
Do you see the vikings moving up in the second to take a OL or will they stay back and maybe take pat white?
Tag Ribary (7:05 PM)
I would lean towards OL help Drew.
tim (baltimore)
i think nicks goes to the giants here
Brad C (Minden Nebraska)
wow a center in the first round????
Tag Ribary (7:07 PM)
Don't be shocked if some of the early Centers taken in the draft end up playing some Guard in their first season.
Gary (Phoenix)
The Steelers are also looking at a center.
matt (San Antonio)
Do the Bills simply suck at drafting or is it just a mercy letting us know that this year is laready a wash?
matt (atl)
thats the second center in the first round!!!!!!! really!!!!!????
steve (cali)
if wells does fall that far do you see the browns taking him in the 2nd round?
Tag Ribary (7:09 PM)
I wouldn't bet against it. Popular move and it could pay off big.
Tag Ribary (7:10 PM)
Nicks to the Giants. Good pick.
Eric (Canton, SD)
with the giants taking nicks, are they out of edwards/boldin trade talks?
Tag Ribary (7:11 PM)
Most likely. They would have to dangle future draft picks and a lot can change between now and next year in terms of team needs. Doesn't seem like a move they would make now.
Jordan (Scottsdale, AZ)
GIANTS ALL THE WAY NOW!
matt meyer (lincoln, NE)
i think it might eric. nicks might turn out to be really good
John (Everywhere)
i think that the titans should go with pat white
Tag Ribary (7:14 PM)
Titans on the clock. Do they make a trade or stand in and draft?
Harold (NY)
I think the Titans should go with a WR or DE, E. Brown or K. Britt.
mike (Beverly Hills,ca)
where do you think rey maualuga will end up?
Tag Ribary (7:16 PM)
Can't say for sure but he probably won't last much longer.
george (Pittsburgh)
Maualuga and Laurinatis will be big time busts.
Bill (Detroit)
Maualuga will end up in detroit bank on it
Tag Ribary (7:19 PM)
Tennessee gets WR Kenny Britt. That fills a big need for them
Ryan (Abilene, TX)
Bill in Detroit is right
jason (georgia)
there was no other option?
Kane (Oakland)
Great pick by the Titans - exactly what they need
Jerry (Green Bay Wisconsin)
no doubt wells is next
Paul (St. Louis)
Wells to Cards and Brown to Steelers.
Tag Ribary (7:22 PM)
Their offense is taking shape. Chris Johnson with Britt, Scaife, Gage and N. Washington. Look out.
Joshua (Calexico, California)
i agree with george in pittsburgh on laurinatis only...i think maualuga is pure talent
Leaping Bear (Hollywood)
Tag you didnt even give me a shout out for calling the Kenny Britt pick
Tag Ribary (7:23 PM)
Good job.
Jeff (Michigan)
Tag, where do you think the Lions go with the first pick in the next round?
Tag Ribary (7:24 PM)
OL or DL. Keep building along the lines and improve your depth on both sides of the ball.
Norton (Austin, TX)
With the Titans, wildcat lookout
Tag Ribary (7:25 PM)
Exactly. They are going to be tough to prepare for.
Stephan ((Orange County))
Tag, whree do you think the steelers need to improve besides the O Line, and Running back?
Tag Ribary (7:26 PM)
I have DE, CB, OT and OC as possibilities for Pittsburgh. Let's see what they do.
Tag Ribary (7:27 PM)
Wells to Arizona. Good job everyone. You had that one nailed.
Sam (Purdue)
Now that the Dolphins have addressed the secondary need, where do you think they will upgrade next?
Tag Ribary (7:30 PM)
They could go WR or OLB next time around.
Pop (austin)
Pitt is taking Max Unger
Aaron (San Diego)
Tag, Larry English will be a help at DE, Where do you think they go considering their next pick is mid-3rd round
Tag Ribary (7:32 PM)
How about ILB or a RT/RG.
Tag Ribary (7:33 PM)
Ziggy Hood to Pittsburgh. Good pick. Youth up front with good size and strength.
Joshua (Calexico, California)
what about jacksonville...where do they need to improve next??
Tag Ribary (7:35 PM)
They still need a WR or a stout DT in my opinion. Let's see what they do.
John (Los Angeles)
I'm gonna hate the Pats even more if they take maualuga - he'd be a steal at this spot
Tag Ribary (7:36 PM)
Two safeties in a row. Chung to New England.
mike (minn)
yeah the lions shouldve taken big rey... hes a beast lions are dumb he is a big steal!!
edwin (modesto, ca)
what about the horrilbe pick by the raiders? how can you pass on crabtree?
Tag Ribary (7:39 PM)
It will be easy to compare the two players progress since they will playing right across the bay from each other. I liked Crabtree as well but you know Mr Davis and how much he likes speed. At least he's consistent.
stan (richmond, ca)
raiders always find a way to screw up
Chris (CT)
Maybe the raiders were concerned with Crabtree's foot?
jim (Kansas City)
As a Chiefs fan, I hope Al Davis lives forever. He's the best owner a KC fan could hope for.
Brian (St. Pete, Florida)
Where do you see Pat White going and when?
Tag Ribary (7:41 PM)
Not sure I can help you much with that one Brian. He's intriguing but you have to have a definate plan for him if you take him this early.
Joshua (California)
What positions do you think the Bengals need to fill still? DE? C? RB?
Tag Ribary (7:43 PM)
I have all three of the positions you listed as team needs for them.
bob (monroe wi)
de from florida st. you can't go wrong!!!
Tag Ribary (7:46 PM)
He has good edge speed but some people think he's a one trick pony (right or wrong).
Anthony (Seattle)
Tag What would be seattles draft grade right now?
Tag Ribary (7:47 PM)
I'd give them an A. I really like Curry and think he'll be productive for them for a long time.
hrowe (San Diego)
Oakland need Big REY!!!! please
Shane (Iowa)
What round are you expecting Shonn Green to go?
Tag Ribary (7:49 PM)
Third or fourth is what I've heard.
Brian (Champaign, IL)
Is there a center worth taking for the Bengals or would they all be reaches at this point?
Tag Ribary (7:52 PM)
Andy Levitre or Duke Robinson are possibilities at some point. Roger Allen is being touted as a sleeper.
matt (boston)
Tag, what's the deal with Rey here? Shocked to see an ILB with his kinda talent slide this far. Generally we see this kinda slip for the skilled positions
Tag Ribary (7:56 PM)
It's surprising. I feel bad for him.
Phil (California)
rey come to oakland!!!!
JJ (Detroit)
Detroit needs to trade their two number 3s to get back into the second round and get Maualuga
Garrett (East Lansing, MI)
What's the deal with the trade coverage? They keep saying that they will bring details on the trades and then never do. It is such a pain to try and decifer it yourself.
Tag Ribary (7:59 PM)
There has been a lot of trades occuring and I'm with you, it's been a little tough to get the details quickly.
Tag Ribary (7:59 PM)
There you go. Rey to Cincinnati
Tag Ribary (8:00 PM)
Thanks everyone. My time is up. Ken Moll will take over from here.
Ken Moll (8:01 PM)
Wow, How about all those trades. Lots of game planning in the WAR ROOM--
Bill (Maryland)
Do you see the Ravens taking a CB or WR next?
Ken Moll (8:03 PM)
Bill, They need both but I would think they go with a wide receiver - How about Pat White (just up the road ) and he can be a versatile player in a "WIldCat" type scheme.
James (Jacksonville)
Why would the Jags take 2 OT's ... do you think their line needs help from all of the injuries?
Ken Moll (8:05 PM)
James, I do think they have concerns about their offensive line . Picking up Tre was gret but he has only a couple of good years left. Del Rio and SMith are thinking "TRENCHES"-
Kevin (NJ)
How do you feel about the Rams draft thus far?
Ken Moll (8:06 PM)
Kevin, Looks ot be an "A" right now filling needs with an excellent OT and hardnosed LBer from Ohio State.
Scott (Nati)
Don't the Jags need WRs?
Ken Moll (8:08 PM)
Scott, No question they need some play makers on the outside but what fits for them. Again maybe White if he's there.
Patrick (South Bend)
NE has 5 second round picks!
Ken Moll (8:09 PM)
Patrick, They loaded up on second and third round picks as this is an average overall draft at the top. More value in the middle and I believe they have 4 2nd rounders and 4 3rd round picks--
Raider Hater (Western Slope, CO)
Ken, in your opinion, what was the biggest surprise from the 1st round?
Ken Moll (8:12 PM)
Raider Hater, That's a trap question. The Raiders clearly reached early in the first round taking Heyward -Bay
Phins Fan (Illinois)
New England is great in the draft every year
Ken Moll (8:14 PM)
Phins, Yes they have been very solid. They don't swing for the fences but hit a bunch of doubles and triples. Butler is another example of being solid in how they approach the draft.
bo (greensboro)
Who do you think the Panthers will draft?
Ken Moll (8:16 PM)
Bo, The Panters have just a few picks this year and will try and add to an already talented roster- They need help along thier defensive line
Scott (Rochester)
WTF, are the Bills planning to play all of 2009 without a LT?
Ken Moll (8:18 PM)
Scott, Yea, they need to address the left tackle spot NOW
josh (st.louis)
who do you see the rams getting later in the draft?
Ken Moll (8:20 PM)
Josh, There are some solid wide receivers that might be available later in the draft. Third , fourth round to help beef up a somewhat average receiving core.
Alexander (Fayette County (KY))
Was Brian Robiskie a good fit for Cleveland?
Ken Moll (8:22 PM)
Alexander, I do see him being a good fit in Cleveland. He is a big target that can perform well in the cold weather and has been coached up since coming out of Diapers- Excellent hands and a tough competitor which should sure up a position that has some ? marks
Paul (Philly)
was maclin a good fit for philly???
Ken Moll (8:24 PM)
Paul, He is a great fit in Philly as he has excellent quickness, burst and play making ability. Just what Mcnabb needs
Mike (Ann Arbor)
Ken, I can't see any of your comments. Just Scott, then Josh, then Alexander
Ken Moll (8:25 PM)
Fella's, Not sure what's up but On my monitor it shows the question and the full comment ----
nathan (CA)
WHERE DO YOU THINK PAT WHITE WILL END UP?
Ken Moll (8:26 PM)
Nathan, He is going soon !!
Ken Moll (8:27 PM)
WOW, There he goes , and the Fins will get him involved as a rookie QB as well WR and "Wild Cat" player-
Christian (Winston-Salem, NC)
How do you think Pat White will fit in Miami's sytem?
Ken Moll (8:29 PM)
Christian- SHould do very well for a creative Miami offense that has perfected the "Wildcat scheme"
SRB (CT)
Mike - I've got the same issue w/Ken's comments. Have to refresh the screen to see 'em. Something ain't right....
Ken Moll (8:30 PM)
SRB, Again Fellas, It all shows up for me and not sure what's going on --
Shane (Wabash, IN)
Ken, do you think that anyone will try to trade for Boldin gin this round?
Ken Moll (8:33 PM)
Shane, They may try but I don't see the Cardinals letting him go for a 2nd round pick, maybe a next years pick one.
Andrew (LaPorte, IN)
Ken, what do you htink about the colts and signing donald brown?
Ken Moll (8:36 PM)
Andrew, Very good player but would have thought they should have gone DEFENSE. Hard to question Bill Polian
Taylor (Michigan)
Ken, why didnt the broncos take maualuga!?
Ken Moll (8:38 PM)
Taylor, Rey is an excellent player but many "expert" feel he is a two down LBer. I think he'll be fine- Denver has a plan but maynot be a conventional approach.
Russ (Pittsburgh)
Does LeSean McCoy end up in Cleveland or Philly in Rd. 2?
Ken Moll (8:39 PM)
Russ, McCoy is very talented but he doidn't show well in his workouts. Average on the watch and just didn't impress many socuts
chris (cleveland)
i think magini and konkinis should be fired already, who takes a center in a draft this defensivly strong
Ken Moll (8:41 PM)
Chris, yes it looked a bit curious considering all their needs on defense.
Jeff (Colorado Springs)
Will Chicago go after a WR - maybe Massaquoi or a trade for Bouldin? That would make Cutler a happy man!
Ken Moll (8:43 PM)
Jeff, I would think they would address this position ASAP but how they do it is a good question--
JR (Cleveland)
I know the draft is defensively strong but Alex Mack is an amazing center. Pittsburgh wanted him badly and you know with their luck he would have been amazing. I think its a solid pick
Ken Moll (8:44 PM)
JR, Yes a solid pick but they need more than "solid" at this point--
todd (south carolina)
what do you think about pat white going so early?
Ken Moll (8:46 PM)
Todd, Versatility is a premium at every position (now a days) and he is one of the most explosive versatile players in this years draft.
fred franklin (pehonix)
who do you think dallas will take?
Ken Moll (8:47 PM)
Fred, They need a safety and wide receiver but I don't see any player that will be an impact at this point in the draft-
Kyle (Kentucky)
Whats the deal with the Raiders? Do you think Al Davis is going over heads and making the picks?
joey (california)
Ken, WTF is Al Davis thinking? they take some clown who wasnt a top 5 saftey left on the board. I talked to Johnnie Higgins on sunday about this before it happened. Al Davis please sell the team now. I even told J.H to make me the GM i will do it for free.
Eric (Miami Beach)
Dallas will take William Beatty
Todd (Indiana)
I think the bears trading out of the 49th pick is genius. they can get a receiver later with greater value
Ken Moll (8:51 PM)
Todd,Yes this was a good move because of not many receivers being available at that pick but they could have secured a good football player at 49th pick--
Ken Moll (8:51 PM)
Tom (Denver)
Why do you suppose Bill Belichick has let so many LB prospects pass him by thus far? It is there biggest need, right?
Ken Moll (8:53 PM)
Tom, I believe he didn't feel that Rey and some of the others (James L.) were versatile enough to take. He is HUGE on being able to move inside or outside in the Pat's 3-4 scheme.
adam (atlanta)
Massaqoui to Browns, I LOVE IT. GO MASSAQUOI!
Ken Moll (8:54 PM)
Adam, The obviously don't feel great about their current receiver (Edwards is likely on his way out)
Chris (Jacksonville)
Why do you suppose Beanie Wells dropped so far? I thought he was a great pick for Arizona
Ken Moll (8:57 PM)
Chris, Yes, Beanie was a very solid pick but not a change of pace for the Cards. Wells has talent but more of a straightline runner with just above average elusiveness.
Joe TenHave (Grand Rapids, MI)
With the Lions already drafting the arguably best QB, TE and S in this draft and the questionable need at LT remains, do you think there's a chance the Lions trade up to draft someone such as William Beatty or Phil Loadholt sometime this round? You know, they do have two 3rd Round picks...?
Ken Moll (8:59 PM)
Joe, They need help for sure at Offensive tackle but will have to make a move to get a solid player.
Taylor (Raleigh)
Wow!! A pass??? Did that really just happen?
Ken Moll (9:00 PM)
Taylor, Very strange, Not sure what happend here but likely a trade - VERY STRANGE !
Ken Moll (9:00 PM)
Talk a you on Sunday , Doug is back
Ken Moll (9:00 PM)
Doug Kretz (9:03 PM)
OK...Lets straighten this stuff out.. Who has had the best draft so far.
Brett (Atlantic City, NJ)
Where in the world do the Birds go with this second round pick?
Doug Kretz (9:04 PM)
They will stay with defense.. Expect 75% of their picks to be on that side of the ball.
Roernt (Tn)
cleveland
Kirk (Las Vegas)
cowboys have had the best draft
Doug Kretz (9:06 PM)
Buffalo got Dallas's pick.
jeff (rocky mountains)
lets try again with doug....do you think bucs can make a move to get a pic in 2nd round for a dt or de?
Doug Kretz (9:07 PM)
That would be a stretch.. They don't have much to offer.. It would take picks from next year's draft and I don't see that happening.. Usually when you trade future (year) picks you end up giving up too much.
Clayton (Oakland)
Well not us thats for sure..I think NE by getting all the picks again
brin (Pa)
is hood a good pick for pitt ??
Doug Kretz (9:09 PM)
Yes, he would make a good fit with their system
Brian (PROVIDENCE)
Browns have had the best draft
Doug Kretz (9:12 PM)
Not sure about that.. Never been big on drafting centers in the first round and Robiskie is a good receiver but lacks top end speed. Not much speed out of Massaquoi, either.. Can they challenge secondaries deep?
Leaping Bear (Hollywood)
Ok looking ahead to Titans now, Do they trade down or Stand Doug??
Doug Kretz (9:12 PM)
I think they will use that pick
mike (portland)
GOOD PICK UP ATL
Nathan (Nashville)
PLEASE address Rashad Johnson falling so far among safeties!!!
Doug Kretz (9:15 PM)
Safeties tend to fall lower than most positions and Johnson is marginal when it comes to size (height) and speed.. Not a great combination for the first round.
Doug Kretz (9:16 PM)
Atlanta got a good pick for the middle of their secondary.. Moore (Missouri)
KungFu Duck (Charlotte)
Rookie of the year will be Knowshon Moreno...he will thrive in Denver's Zone Blocking Scheme, he is a great 1 cut and up back.
Drew (Mass)
what grade would you give the patriots so far??
Doug Kretz (9:18 PM)
I like it.. Chung was a good player at Oregon and Brace fits the scheme very well and Butler was considered one of the top two corners by some people..
Josh (Santa Clara)
What do you see from Crabtree in SF? will he be asked to step up to the #1 WR role
Doug Kretz (9:20 PM)
Eventually, but it will take a year.. It will be a major transition from the offense he ran in Lubbock to what he will be involved in with the 49rs..
Drone (GA)
Moreno is jumping into a backfield that's already saturated. Going to be hard for him to stand out when there's, like, a zillion RBs to split carries with.
Doug Kretz (9:22 PM)
They had a lot of bodies at RB but I don't think they had any feature running backs.. Moreno will get a lot of carries.
moe (detroit)
Doug what are your qualifications for answering our questions?
Doug Kretz (9:23 PM)
Moe.. 25 years of NFL scouting.
John (Dallas)
What is going on with Dallas? Did jerry bet the farm on the stadium and now has nothing left for draft day?
Doug Kretz (9:23 PM)
They just did not see anyone worth the value at that pick.. They will get their chances.
Patrick ((Oswego))
How do you feel about the Jets move of getting Sanchez?
Doug Kretz (9:25 PM)
I like Sanchez but felt like they gave up too much to make the move. He was a major need for them
Seth (Denver)
What are your thoughts on Fili Moala? Does he have an immediate impact for the Colts and shore up the middle or their D-line?
Doug Kretz (9:26 PM)
He will be an immediate impact player.. He gives them more bulk and strength to shore up the middle
Josh (Fort Worth)
How do you feel the Eagles have done so far drafting a WR and RB?
Doug Kretz (9:28 PM)
Both fell at a good time for the Eagles to shore up areas that needed to be addressed. I liked both picks..
Jimmy (Kansas)
Why did the jags select two tackles? shouldn't they have looked to a reciever in the 2nd round..especially after passing on Maclin and Crabtree.
Doug Kretz (9:31 PM)
They had major issues on the O line last year and hope to correct that immediately.. They probably hope to find some speed at WR in the next two rounds..
john (boston)
why did the patriots pick a ot ive never heard of this guy is he any good
Doug Kretz (9:33 PM)
BB is one of the best at finding players that fit his system (remember Mankins who everyone questioned?).. I'm sure they saw a lot of things to like in their preparations..
Zack (Houston)
What grade would you give the Texans
Doug Kretz (9:35 PM)
I like Cushing (LB).. Barwin (DE) may have been a bit of a reach.
John (Maryland)
Do you think getting Robiske and Massaquoi means Cleveland is preparing for Braylon Edwards' departure?
Doug Kretz (9:35 PM)
I think THEY think so..
Mike (Clayton, NC)
Who do you like for Pitts second rounder?
Doug Kretz (9:37 PM)
O line.. They would probably like to get a center but I'm not sure there are any left that are worth a 2nd.. Maybe a guard or tackle to move inside to center..
Chris (Virginia)
Who do you think will make the biggest impact in the first year for their team?
Doug Kretz (9:38 PM)
Crabtree - WR - 49rs
Kevin (Palo Alto, CA)
what are the odds the seahawks take a quarterback in the later rounds?
Doug Kretz (9:41 PM)
I'm sure they will.. They need to address the position - Matt is showing his age and Wallace is not the answer. Probably tomorrow.
Chris (Ann Arbor, MI)
With no top OT prospects left, could the Lions still upgrade their O-line somehow?
Doug Kretz (9:42 PM)
Don't worry.. There are still good players at OT left on the board.
Gomez (Boise, Idaho)
Was it smart for TB to take yet another QB?
Doug Kretz (9:44 PM)
Wasn't a big fan of that pick.. I think they panicked..
Brian (Ohio)
Was trading up to get Oher smart for the Ravens?
Doug Kretz (9:45 PM)
Yes, they got a left OT for the next 10 years.. Those guys are hard to find.
steve (wyoming)
what do you think of denver's draft?
Doug Kretz (9:46 PM)
I like it.. they got a franchise RB and helped themselves on Defense.
david (mizzou)
two missouri players first round, how bout it boys. Missouri Football is back!!!
Chris (Colchester)
How would you rate the Giants 3 first day picks?
Doug Kretz (9:47 PM)
Love their first two (WR and OLB).. Beatty may have been a reach.
thomas (oakland)
no!!!! i hate al davis, this is the worst draft ever. crabtree will be a star. I feel like there is a knife in my back
Tim (Titletown)
Miami day 1 grade?
Doug Kretz (9:48 PM)
B.. Love the two cornerbacks.. Have some questions about White
Ross (Ca)
why did Miami draft 2 CB's?
Doug Kretz (9:49 PM)
Because all they had before were a bunch of journeymen at CB.
Collin (Denver)
Denver's day one grade?
Doug Kretz (9:50 PM)
A-
jim (florida)
who is the best pick of the draft so far
Doug Kretz (9:50 PM)
I'd go with Crabtree
k (el paso de robles)
Is Michael Johnson big enough to play end in a 3-4 for say... the Niners?
Doug Kretz (9:51 PM)
Tall enough but not stout enough
mike (florida)
how about all those picks from uconn thats the real sleeper
Doug Kretz (9:52 PM)
The Huskies - NFL farm system.
chris (dallas)
does the new Dnever coach have any idea what he's doing?
Doug Kretz (9:52 PM)
I think so.. I like what they have done so far..
Josh (Desk)
How would you grade Arizona's day 1?
Doug Kretz (9:54 PM)
I like Cody Brown for when they got him.. Not wild about Wells - ?? running backs with health issues.
Brent (Seattle)
Things were looking down for Seattle when Chung and Robiskie went off the board, but I thought they ended out having a great second round, wouldn't you agree?
Doug Kretz (9:57 PM)
I like Unger.. He can play both center and guard.. His pick may indicate they are finally giving up on Spencer (#1 bust in '05)
Mike (Kirtland OH)
Will Derek Anderson be traded
Doug Kretz (9:58 PM)
Not sure how much value he has around the league.. Remember, he was considered a bust before he went on a roll in '07 and then reverted this past season..
Joe (Bartlett)
HUGE QUESTION HERE DO THE LIONS WIN A GAME THIS YEAR?
Doug Kretz (9:58 PM)
Yes, at least one game.
Shawn (San Jose)
Do the San Francisco 49ers Look at taking a QB in the later rounds, or are they okay with hill and Smith this year
Doug Kretz (10:00 PM)
I think they are OK with Hill and Smith
alex (wisconsin)
why didnt cinci take crabtree!?
Doug Kretz (10:01 PM)
They went with need over best available player.
Doug Kretz (10:03 PM)
Draft is done for the day.. See you guys tomorrow..
Buzzmaster (10:19 PM)
Thanks Doug, Ken, Tag and Gary! We'll be back again Sunday to chat during the draft. It all starts at 10 a.m. ET!
Jake (Delray Beach, FL)
Will the Jets get a TE in the thrid round today
Ken Moll (10:00 AM)
Fella's- Things happen FAST on day two. Tough to keep up with but it should be interesting.
Ken Moll (10:02 AM)
To answer your question, yes the jets have three good ones to chosse from in Nelson, Ingram and Coffman (I really like this Coffman kid as a receiving threat to stretch the seams.
Jason (Dallas, TX)
I think Jarrom Gilbert makes sense in Dallas. What do you think?
Ken Moll (10:03 AM)
Jason , Gilbert is one of the better values in the draft at this point - It would fill a need and it wouldn't be a reach--
Kyle (Columbus, Oh)
Do you think the Browns will trade up to take one of the RBs available or just stay put and hope one falls to them?
Ken Moll (10:05 AM)
Kyle, It will depend on what comes off the board early in the day. They can sit tight right now but if they start to fall off the board they may make a move to go get one.
Jay (NY)
Why do you think Laurinitis fell to the 2nd round?
Ken Moll (10:06 AM)
Jay, No one really knows for sure but it was a great value for the Packers. This kid can play and should do well in the new 3-4 scheme that Capers will utilize.
Peter (Brooklyn, NY)
Do you think Kiwanuka (NY Giants) will now be traded because they drafted Sintim, who is pretty much the same player?
Ken Moll (10:07 AM)
Peter, I don't see it happening. I think they really like Kiwanuka. Would be a surprized if they make a trade.
Evan (Philly)
Sorry Ken the Pack drafted Matthews, not Laurinitis
Ken Moll (10:08 AM)
Evan , My bad but he will be a good player in the league --
tazio (scarsdale NY)
should the lions take Sidbury or Gilbert?
Ken Moll (10:10 AM)
Tazio, (from Harrison originally) - Either player would upgrade their defense. I think I would go with Gilbert if he's there.
david (ohio)
who is he best TE still in the draft
Ken Moll (10:11 AM)
David, Most think it's the kid from Florida (Ingram) but I like Chase Coffman from Mizzouri.
jermaine (philly)
ken do you think the eagles should draft a te in the 3rd rd
Ken Moll (10:12 AM)
Jermaine, Again there are some very good TE's still left in the draft and would go get one of these guys if they are still there (Coffman, Ingram or Nelson)
ian (indianapolis)
why wasnt shonn greene drafted earlier?
Ken Moll (10:14 AM)
Ian, Don't know but have heard many think he is a bit one dimensional and doesn't have GREAT speed- He's another very good player that should do well in the league, depending on where he lands.
Zach (New York)
Where will Jarron Gilbert get drafted?
Ken Moll (10:16 AM)
Zach, He should go early today , maybe Dallas but there are several clubs that need interior help
jake (mi)
do you think crabtree will suffer from not having a "franchise" qb or will he help shaun hill prove his case for being the starter
Ken Moll (10:18 AM)
Jake, I tend to think he will help Hill more than he will struggle in the 49ers offense. Singletary will run the ball 1st and bring the passing attack along slowly- They arn't tossing it up 40 or 50 times a game in 2009-
Ken Moll (10:21 AM)
The Chiefs are building in the trenches - SMART !!
Todd (Raleigh)
The Bears need to address their need for a wide receiver today. Are their any receivers left that you see making an impact their first year in the league?
SHANE (mo)
WHY DID ST LOUIS TAKE FLETCHER AT CB INSTEAD OF MOORE OR ALLEN?
Ken Moll (10:25 AM)
Shane, Both Moore and Allen were rated higher but SPags likes big corners and will need him when they have to defend Arizona
paulo (stlouis)
oh jarron gilbert good pick or?
Ken Moll (10:26 AM)
Paulo, Not a bad thought to get a player that "could" have an impact - Again they went with the best available player rather than reach - They can get a receiver with their next pick if they choose to go that way.
Dave (FLA)
Cowboys at last, I think it will be a defensive player.
Ken Moll (10:27 AM)
Dave, I believe they would have gone with Gilbert but likely go with safety Johnson from Bama !!
Eddie, guitarist of EyeSoul (Ft.Worth, TX)
Dallas needs to pick up Rashad Johnson since we all know Pacman was a joke. What do you think Ken?
Ken Moll (10:29 AM)
Lets see what ahppens here, Ah they took what they thought was the best player that fits their scheme- Great workout guy but not sure he should have gone here.
mike (alabama)
how could the Cowboys let Johnson get away from them, much bigger need at S then OLB
Ken Moll (10:30 AM)
Mike, POTENTIAL, POTENTIAL , But often times that kind of mentality gets you beat
Codi (Ohio)
any1 thihnk bengals take johnson?
Ken Moll (10:32 AM)
Codi, That would be another solid pick for the Bengals, not really a need for them but a great addition at this point in the draft-
Phil (Michigan)
Ken, do you think the Lions draft defense with there next pick?
Ken Moll (10:34 AM)
Phil, I believe they have a bunch of needs still but they want to keep their franchise signal caller upright (Possible OL)
Joe (Bartlett)
WILL JAY CUTLER BE A SUCCESS IN CHICAGO?
Ken Moll (10:35 AM)
Joe, He obviously will have lss pressure to produce big numbers with the Bears offense but I don't see the production in the Windy City with who he has to throw to right now.
Dorian (Ca)
Is Shonn Greene good enough for the J-E-T-S to look to unload Thomas Jones?
Ken Moll (10:36 AM)
Dorian, Why not keep both of them. Ypou need two excellent backs often times to get through the season- No I don't think they unload Jones.
Tom (Iowa)
Is there a QB left in the draft who could be an upgrade for the 49ers over Alex Smith or Shaun Hill by the 2010 season?
Ken Moll (10:38 AM)
Tom, I'm not sure he would be an upgrade but could be an interesting choice to work with (Graham Harrell can play)
Joe (Bartlett)
WHO WILL THE BEARS LOOK AT TO SOLVE THEIR WR PROBLEM????
Ken Moll (10:40 AM)
Joe, They are going to have to find a "Diamond in the Rough" at this point. There are some names still up on the board but it may be throwing Darts right now.
zw (ny)
who should new england pick?
Ken Moll (10:41 AM)
ZW, I would think LBer but BB has to have the right fit or he goes with the best available player.
Ryan (DC)
The Bears should look at Juaquin Iglesias of Oklahoma with their next pick
Ken Moll (10:43 AM)
Ryan, That's not a bad thought- Juaquin can stretch the field but has been somewhat inconsistent in college. Might take a shot on him at this point-
Clark (Dallas)
It would be sweet if San Francisco took Harrell. It would be Texas Tech Football all over again.
Ken Moll (10:45 AM)
Clark, That was my thought. he is the kind of guy that many will overlook but you can't deny what the kid has done in college (forget a "systems QB) he can play-
Duane (Atlanta)
Jerry Jones may be able to save face....Rashad Johnson.....still available.
Ken Moll (10:46 AM)
Duane, I would be really suprized if Jerry passes on Johnson again if he is there.
Joe (Bartlett)
WILL THE BEARS LOOK TO AQUIRE ANQUAIN BOLDIN OR BRAYLON EDWARDS THROUGH TRADE WITH BRIAN URLACHER?
Ken Moll (10:48 AM)
Joe, I know you really want this trade to happen but unless they give up something from 2010's draft I don't see it happening in the third round.
Rich (Jax, FL)
Ken!!!!!! You gotta help me out. Who are those two small school guys that the Jaguars just drafted back-to-back?
Ken Moll (10:50 AM)
Rich, Both of those guys are somewhat of unknown commodities and look to be a reach in the third round. Looks like they gave up too much (7th , o-k but a second round pick in 2010 ?? )
Hagy (Virginia)
Derek Cox just went off the board. What's the next small school player you see coming next? And do you think, with the NCAA reducing scholarships, we will see a lot more like this in the future?
Ken Moll (10:52 AM)
Hagy, There is no question that the reducing scholarships has affected teams throughtout the country. It's been like that for years now - There goes a Ball State Lineman -
Aaron (St Louis)
Ken...How would you rate the Rams Draft so far ..And do you think Bradley Fletcher is good enough to start opposite Bartell next year
Ken Moll (10:54 AM)
Aaron, I like what the Rams have done thus far with a big tackle and very solid LBer. Fletcher has the raw tools to start in the league but maynot be the guy on opening day.
Jeremy (Minneapolis)
Ken...Do you think Percy Harvin will make the Vikings an instant Superbowl contender?
Ken Moll (10:55 AM)
Jeremy, WOW this Harvin kid is really explosive and should help the Vikings a bunch but I still believe their QB play has to improve for them to get to the big dance
Kevin (NC)
Ken...How are the Eagles doing in this draft in your opinion and will they make a play for Boldin before it's over?
Ken Moll (10:57 AM)
Kevin, The BIRDS are fying high in this draft but the best thing they have done thus far is securing the left side of the O-L with acquiring Jason Peters last week.
Donaldson (MD)
Ken, my Steelers seem to be giving up their picks and waiting around.....3rd round and only one pick so far!
Ken Moll (10:59 AM)
Donaldson, There have been several teams taking that approach. (Dallas, Browns, Pats' and others) - Many believe that the value (after the top few picks) is in the middle of the draft.
Ken Moll (11:00 AM)
Fella's , It's been great and I'll be back in a couple of hours- Tag is up next
Tag Ribary (11:01 AM)
Hey everybody. We're rolling along pretty well so far. Lets keep it going.
Justin Gagne (Gainesville)
i think miami took 2 corners becuase other than allen i think they werent confident in there other cb's. i like the two that they got im just not to sure if pat white was a great choice in the 2nd round i wish they would have traded one spot to get the linebacker from FSU
Tag Ribary (11:03 AM)
Hey Justin. Miami will find a way to use P. White creatively. They created a lot of problems last year with the wild cat but it will be interestig to see what new wrinkles they come with next. I like the CB's they have taken - some good WR's in that division.
Jim (Boston)
Why have the Patriots been trading down so much? They are only getting lower picks that round and even more lower picks later rounds.
Tag Ribary (11:05 AM)
Jim, I like their approach. Accumulate a bunch of new talent and let it sort itself out in training camp. This draft has good quality through the middle rounds. It will take some time to figure out if they hit on some of these players but be patient. Coach Belichick knows what he's looking for.
Matt (MI)
Are we gonna see a kicker or punter go today?
Tag Ribary (11:06 AM)
Hey Matt, I believe we will in the later rounds.
Dukes (Pittsburgh)
Hey Tag, what do you think about Pittsburgh going with Kraig Urbik with their 2nd pick in the draft?
Tag Ribary (11:09 AM)
I like the selection. Wisonsin o-linemen and the Pittsburgh Steelers seems like a good fit. Tough, hard nosed players.
Scott (York, Pa)
Should the Eagles look for defensive back help with their next pick?
Tag Ribary (11:10 AM)
Its a definate possibility with the Sheldon Brown contract problems looming.
Ross (New York)
Jets? WR? Sanchez is nice and all but its hard to be a sucessful QB with no one to throw to right?
Tag Ribary (11:14 AM)
Hey Ross, they could go for a WR or TE help at this point.
Kevin (CT)
What era your thoughts on the Falcons picks thus far and who do you see them going after this round?
Tag Ribary (11:17 AM)
Good value for Atlanta so far. I really like the trade for Gonzalez last week. If they can keep acquiring some young defensive help they will be awfully tough this year.
Ramsey (Detroit)
I think my Bungles have had an amazing draft so far. What the heck is happening?
Tag Ribary (11:18 AM)
Ramsey, I agree. The Bengals should be more physical in '09. Keep it up.
Jeff (UCF)
Tag, why aren't the Pats picking any LB's?
Tag Ribary (11:20 AM)
I thought they would have grabbed one by now. Maybe with the next pick or two. We'll see.
Mike (Pittsburgh)
Of the three WRs picked in a row, who do you think will have the biggest impact this year?
Tag Ribary (11:22 AM)
I like Tate. Tom Brady will find a way to utliize him.
Jones (Omaha)
Brandon Tate for sure, Tate was better than Hakeem Nicks before he got hurt, if he stays healthy Brandon Tate no doubt
Shane (Montana)
Tag, Why didn't the Colts pick a defensive player in the first round?
Tag Ribary (11:24 AM)
I had them down for a DT at some point and thought they would go that route first but I think they were a little surprised that Donald Brown was still there and they had him highly rated. Best player available.
Michael (Metz, France)
A nice run on WR. Get 'em while they're hot.
Leaping Bear (Hollywood)
Dang that was a reach by the Giants here in Barden, WOW!!!
tom (Cincinnati)
I'm fine with Cinci's picks so far. We really needed a tackle and Smith could pan out. Crabtree seems to be a goon. Any toughts from anybody on Michael Johnson?
Tag Ribary (11:27 AM)
Johnson is talented and should give them some help off the edge but he has some doubters in regards to his effort and consistency.
Haoran (Chapel Hill)
Johnson seems to lack the size to be a run stopper but he seems so quick and could be a great pass rusher.
Ghost (Youngstown, OH)
Johnson is Jevon Kearse like...He is new the version of the Freak...I wanted to see the Titans drop down and pick him up
Brock (Tucson)
What do you guys think about the seahawks draft so far. I am a hawks fan and am pissed.
Tag Ribary (11:30 AM)
Brock - I think you'll like what the Seahawks did in this draft when fall arrives. Did you want Crabtreee or an OL?
Leonard (Mount Rushmore)
Looks like Ted Thompson has finally loosened up a bit. The Packers had two fantastic picks in the first round, Raji and Matthews.
Tag Ribary (11:31 AM)
I like GB's draft so far as well.
BO (Muncie, IN)
What are your thoughts on Fili Moala, the DT from USC the Colts selected in the second round?
Tag Ribary (11:33 AM)
I like him. He gives them some more size up front and he will be productive. He is strong and can probably get bigger also.
JR (LA)
im waiting for someone to draft the waterboy from USC, I think he is the only one left from there besides Pete Carroll
Nano (Atl)
Tag, what do you think of that Kevin Barnes, CB, pick for the Redskins? Especially with a couple decent OL still on the board...
Tag Ribary (11:36 AM)
They must have had him rated higher than the remaining O-linemen on their board. There is a run on CB's and WR's happening.
Brian (Massachusetts)
Tag, how do you feel about the Patriots taking Patrick Chung early in the second round, with their first pick of the draft?
Tag Ribary (11:38 AM)
I like Chung. I had a chance to see him a couple of times last year. He is an instinctive guy that is around the ball a lot.
kyle (potomac)
not a chung fan but gotta give belicheck benefit of the doubt
Scott (Calgary)
Can somebody please send Steve Young to go talk to Brad Childress? THIS IS QB LEAGUE!
Frankie (Philly)
Atlanta will surely take Matt Fodge to bolster an already stout punt unit
colton (tennessee)
do you think knowshon moreno will have a good pro career?
Tag Ribary (11:41 AM)
I do. If he stays healthy, he should be productive for quite some time.
cindy (oregon)
Chung is an absolute find for the Patriots. I have watched this young man mature over the years and believe me, they will not be disappointed. Great young man.
Rob (Oregon)
Moreno will be fine, but I hate that he's playing for a guy (McDaniels) that I don't think has a clue!
jimbob (SC)
Tag, do you feel as though there will be any surprises regarding system quarterbacks. Graham Harrel, Chase Daniel, or the like?
Tag Ribary (11:43 AM)
I guess it depends on whether you expect them to go early or late.
JaFranklin (C-town)
Come on Tag, Help a Brother out! D was a huge need for the Browns and all we got so far is a DE that will convert to an OLB. Sure we got Coleman and Elam, but will we look for a solid run stopper?
Tag Ribary (11:48 AM)
I'm not sure this draft has a lot of depth inside along the DL. Shaun Rogers can work if they get on the same page this year.
Jason (Columbus)
Was the Browns selection of 2 WRs back to back in the second round a reach? What's your take?
Tag Ribary (11:51 AM)
Jason I like Robskie and Massaquoi and they need the help. To give Quinn a chance he has to have some playmakers around him and think both of those moves are good moves.
Ilia (Philly)
What you think about the Eagles now having 6, YES, SIX, 5th rd picks....
Tag Ribary (11:53 AM)
Go get some players! It would be exciting to be in the draft room with that many selections in a single round.
Tim (NJ)
i just watched highlights of Giants pick Ramses Barden.. wow! Great move for his size. looks faster then they say
corey (texas)
i'm a life long lions fan and am pleased with their draft so far. i only have 1 gripe. why take pettigrew when u had oher availiable? oher coulda filled a huge need on their o-line for alot of years. why do u think they decided to take pettigrew and still havent addressed the o-line problem?
Tag Ribary (11:56 AM)
All I can say is they had to have Pettigrew rated higher. As with all of these picks, time will tell. I think you'll be happy with Pettigrew when you see him.
Anthony (PA)
I was at the draft party for the eagles at the linc, and i was hoping they'd get brown from connecticut, H
Smitty (South Bend)
Tag - any opinion on the Cards draft so far? Very unusual to see them picking so late each round.
Tag Ribary (11:59 AM)
Arizona has gotten good value while also addressing team needs. I like what they've done. Particularly if Wells is durable.
Tag Ribary (12:00 PM)
Compensatory picks are upcoming. No more trades for the time being.
Tag Ribary (12:01 PM)
Thanks for the questions and comments everyone. Doug Kretz is up next.
Doug Kretz (12:02 PM)
Thanks Tag.. Lets keep this going. Lots of multiple picks for a few teams and it could be interesting..
scott (austin)
why are so many people skipping on DJ Moore for other CBs?
Doug Kretz (12:03 PM)
Scott.. For some reason there always seems to be at least one player that ends up dropping.. It ends up taking on a life of it's own and not necessarily for any good reason.. He should be drafted soon.
Doug Kretz (12:03 PM)
Size is the probable reason.
Randy (couch)
maybe becuase he is 5'8"
John (VA)
Wasn't able to watch much yesterday and didn't see any news about Boldin or Edwards involved in any draft day trades....any news? Thanks!!!!
Doug Kretz (12:04 PM)
Nothing happening so far.. I don't see it happening at this stage.
Louis (Orlando)
Love that draft pick from the Pats! What do you know about McKenzie that should excite other Patriots fans?
Doug Kretz (12:06 PM)
Extremely productive.. Smart and can line up at multiple positions.. Typical BB pick due to versitility.
Daniel (Yukon, OK)
Doug, the Chiefs almost have to go O-line with their next pick, right? Duke Robinson maybe?
Doug Kretz (12:08 PM)
Don't know about Robinson at this point but I agree, the Chiefs should go with the O line.
Mikey Day (Florida)
What do you think of the Titans draft so far? I dont know much about Cook and Mouton, are they solid players?
Doug Kretz (12:10 PM)
I like what they have done, so far. Cook will be an exceptional receiving TE and Moulton will be a situational (nickel back) player and help on special teams.
brad (chicago)
What do you think of the Bears pick of Juaquin Iglesias?
Doug Kretz (12:12 PM)
Wish he played the game faster.. He has been productive and knows how to run routes but his lack of speed could catch up with him.
Joshua (CA)
What other positions do you feel the Bengals need to fill to finish the draft strong? And do you think Coffman was a good pick?
Doug Kretz (12:14 PM)
I think Coffman may end up being their best value pick so far today.. They continue to pick players that have red flags on them and it always seems to catch up with them in a few years.
Jarett (NY)
Another TE for the Giants? He seems like more of an offensive weapon than Kevin Boss, but Boss has become Eli Manning's favorite target. Where does Beckum fit in?
Doug Kretz (12:15 PM)
Different kind of TE.. Beckum is more of an H back or move TE.. Boss is a true TE and both will see plenty of action.
Bob (CA)
That's the first QB since the 1st round unless you count Pat White
Doug Kretz (12:16 PM)
QB's could start to drop now that it has started.
corey (texas)
i'm about to pull my hair out about detroits decision not to address the O-line problem yet. what is ur opinion on why they havent? is it possible they see something in someone still on the board that they feel wont get taken soon?
Doug Kretz (12:19 PM)
Could be a long year for Culpepper/Stafford.. I agree, they really need to address the O line.. You can have the best QB, WRs and TE but if the O line does not give them time to make their reads and run their routes the QB will get injured..
jasper (mi)
should the lions have got a lineman instead of stafford
Doug Kretz (12:21 PM)
I don't think any of the OTs (linemen in general) fit the bill as the number one pick in the draft. No, Stafford was probably the right pick but O line should have been addressed by now.
Mike (Tx)
Am I dreaming Stephen McGee wasn't that good in college how is he getting drafted???
Doug Kretz (12:23 PM)
Potential.. (often the words on a HC/GM's headstone after he gets burried)..
Mike (Stl)
Dorell Scott? Was DT one of the Rams highest needs?
Doug Kretz (12:25 PM)
Not one of their big needs but he was no doubt the top player left on their board.
Brad (Ky)
What do you think of the Steelers draft so far?
Doug Kretz (12:26 PM)
Very solid.. No reaches and all four should contribute quickly.
dustin (ky)
was it DJ Moore's speed or height, or both, that has kept him from being drafted so far?
Doug Kretz (12:28 PM)
Height was the biggest issue.
Sam (Utah)
With all the needs that San Fransico has, why would they go with a RB in the 3rd round
Doug Kretz (12:30 PM)
They like his toughness, both physically as well as mentally.. He fit. Gore has durability issues and they need depth at the position.
Carter (Grovecity)
Is Buffalo having one of the worst drafts os far or how would you grade them?
Doug Kretz (12:33 PM)
Safe draft, so far.. No busts that I forsee but I don't see any home runs so far, either.
matt (regina)
why a de for the bears? they need help in the secondary more than up front
Doug Kretz (12:35 PM)
That looked like a questionable pick..
BRANDON (GAINESVILLE)
WHY DO YOU THINK REY MAUALUGA SLIPPED OUT OF THE FIRST ROUND?
Doug Kretz (12:36 PM)
2 down LB.. Lack of speed and cover skills hurt him.
Nate (Indy)
Donald Brown seems a weird pick, but Polian has a phenomenal track record of talent evaluation. Thoughts about the pick?
Doug Kretz (12:38 PM)
I'm not wild about that choice.. But this is the area where diamonds are found.. Maybe they got a great workout on him at one point that no one else saw?? Time will tell.
Phil (Pittsburgh)
Miami should go with Duke Robinson right here, he's a good pick this late and they can address a suspect O-Line
Ross (Fort Worth)
I am underwhelmed by the Dallas picks so far. Do you like anyone they have picked?
Doug Kretz (12:39 PM)
A lot of projects, so far.. Don't see anyone that can help them in the short term.
Brad (Boston)
Doug, when will the broncos address the D-line problems...the draft is already half over.
Doug Kretz (12:41 PM)
They addressed it, to some extent, with free agency.. Still time to look to the D line today.
Adam (FL)
Who is gonna come in and play for Dallas day 1? A safety maybe? Thats' it.
Evan (Minnesota)
Why do you think the Vikings chose Asher Allen over D.J. Moore?
Doug Kretz (12:44 PM)
Better burst when closing on the ball and 1-2 inches more height.
Josh (Phoenix)
So are the niners just not going to address QB this year?
Doug Kretz (12:46 PM)
I think they like the guys that they already have.. Smith should be healthy by now and Hill showed some flashes last year.
corey (texas)
i asked this question before but didnt get much of an answer so i was wondering what ur thoughts were on detroit taking pettigrew over oher. oher might not have been higher on their board but was a much bigger need and coulda made their draft grade alot higher
Doug Kretz (12:49 PM)
I have been in a lot of draft rooms where teams had players rated very differently than the "experts" did.. They obviously were worried more about how they felt about the players as opposed to how the TV talking heads felt about them.
Parm (East Windsor, NJ)
What will the eagles do with their plethora of 5th rd. picks?
Doug Kretz (12:50 PM)
That is where you usually see teams pick guys with great size or great speed so that if you hit on a player you hit big time.. Expect a few gambles with those picks.
Andrew J (Edinburgh)
What are your thoughts on the Bengals' draft? I want to like it because they made solid selections at positions they need, but we've plenty of high talent/weak character guys before. Smith and Johnson could turn out to be lazy, while Maualuga already has an arrest in his past. Another byproduct of their weak scouting department?
Doug Kretz (12:51 PM)
That is quite often the problem when you only have 2-3 scouts and can't do the in depth research into a player's past and off the field issues..
Eric (Charlotte)
Why would the Panthers pick Mike Goodson a RB out of Texas A&M when they have a double headed monster in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewert?
Doug Kretz (12:54 PM)
Not wild about that pick, either, Eric.. May use him as a return guy since he has speed and elusiveness.. I would have looked elsewhere..
Jake (Santa Clara, CA)
How is the Raiders draft coming along?
Doug Kretz (12:56 PM)
Not wild about it, so far.. Too many reaches.. Potential with speed but didn't produce like they could have in college.
Ryan (NJ)
Hey Doug. I have a question. I wanna know y the Pats traded up to get Ron Brace. They alrdy have Wilfork, so they dont need an NT. And I think Brace is to slow to play DE. I have come to the conclusion that Belicheck traded up to get Ron Brace so his underling McD, who needs an NT, couldn't get him. Your thoughts?
Doug Kretz (12:57 PM)
One thing I can guarantee you is that BB would NOT draft a player he does not need to keep a competitor (especially one in a different division) from drafting him. I'm sure BB saw a lot to like in Brace..
Evan (Minnesota)
Since the Eagles were one game from getting to the superbowl last year, do you think Jeremy Maclin is the player that will get them to the superbowl next year?
Doug Kretz (12:59 PM)
Andy Reid loves explosive football players.. If Maclin gets his touches he can raise the level of that team.,
AA (Detroit)
Is there any chance of the Lions still coming out of the draft with a starting defender of any kind?
Doug Kretz (1:01 PM)
I'm sure they will.. Five picks left and at least one of them should have an impact on defense.
Doug Kretz (1:01 PM)
My time is up guys.. Enjoy the rest of the draft.
Ken Moll (1:05 PM)
Wow, It's been a long day but very interesting- Let's see what happens in the mid to late rounds-
air jordan (florence)
Now that the broncos didnt trade up for sanchez do you tink kyle orton will be able to hold his own as a denver's starting quarterback
Ken Moll (1:08 PM)
Air, For now I think that Orton can be servicable for the Broncos but he's not Cutler. there is more than meets the eye that went on with Cutler in Denver. I think the Broncos made out in that He (Cutler) didn't want to be there !! Than let him go and move forward with the new regime !
Spencer (Boston)
When do you think we'll start seeing some special teams guys come off the board?
James Walker (1:09 PM)
Hey everyone, busy day in the AFC North.
Alex (Cleveland)
What's your opinion on Kaluka Maiava, OLB, USC
Ken Moll (1:10 PM)
Spencer, Often times the 5th and later rounds is where punters, kickers and especially specific special teams players (that will be core coverage contributors) will go in this area. Undersized LBers that can run and hit , etc.
Jester (Tulsa)
Cardinals havent taken a WR yet, is it a safe bet that this could mean Boldin is staying?
James Walker (1:10 PM)
I like the fact that he played in a 3-4 hybrid type of defense at USC. So many players are projections in college because they never played the scheme. But this will help.
chris (maryland)
JW, what do you think about the ravens not selecting a WR yet?
Adam (Dayton, OH)
I heard some analysts saying that the Bengals would draft another RB to help carry the load with Benson. I think that is a great idea to take some of the pressure off of Palmer, but do you think their are RBs left that could make an immediate impact? (Javon Ringer?)
James Walker (1:12 PM)
Good question. I think it's risky. I'm not sure if their board didn't have anyone they like or not. But I thought this year's class was deep enough for them to find a good WR in the first two, maybe three rounds. And they passed every time.
James Walker (1:12 PM)
Adam, That's a great though and Ringer would fit in well with Cincy
Ryan (NJ)
Wow, Bengals r having all the pieces fall to them. I give them an A so far. Do you agree?
James Walker (1:14 PM)
I wouldn't say an A Ryan. The Bengals have drafted great talent. But there are concerns will nearly every player. Will Andre Smith clean up his act? Why did Rey M. fall to the second round? With Michael Johnson play hard every down? These are all big questions. But talent wise, good picks so far.
vince (cleveland)
do u think the browns made the right choice picking robiskie over maualiga?
Paul Kuharsky (1:16 PM)
Hi folks, we ready to shift to AFC South for a bit?
James Walker (1:16 PM)
Too early to tell. The Browns need a lot of things. I thought Robiskie is a polished pick, but maybe a little too early. I'm more surprised they took another WR back to back.
amar (houston)
how do u rate houstons pick of glover quinn
Paul Kuharsky (1:17 PM)
I will write about this in a bit I think. Glover Quin is versatile. Is it good for the Texans to get guys that can play multiple positions? Or do they need to find a clear cut free safety, a clear cut corner opposite Dunta, etc?
ryan (indy)
why did the colts pass on dj moore in the 3rd to take jarraud powers... coudlnt be height because jaraud is even shorter....
Paul Kuharsky (1:19 PM)
Must view him as a better fit. Moore is more of a man guy and the Colts are a zone team with the Tampa 2.
James (Nashville)
How much upside does Kenny Britt bring to the Titan's wide out corp? Where do you see him fitting in and how good could he be in the future?
Paul Kuharsky (1:20 PM)
Tons of potential. You hope they roll through three right from opening day and it's Gage, Washington and Britt. I would think he'll see action early in the red zone at least. Someone they can finally throw fades to.
Kyrill (NJ)
Does the Jags' trade up for Derek Cox make any sense?
Paul Kuharsky (1:22 PM)
I think no matter how they feel about him, they have to read how the rest of the league feels about him. And I doubt the rest of the league saw him as a hird worth trading a second for.
Evan (Minnesota)
Will Houston pick a QB in draft, since they traded Sage Rosenfels to the Vikings?
Paul Kuharsky (1:23 PM)
They signed Dan Orlovsky as their backup. They could draft one, but they don't need to draft one.
BO (Muncie, IN)
I'm excited about Donald Brown, I think it's just like when Addai got in the league, he'll play back-up and depending on how good he gets, he could snatch the starting position but it'll be somewhat like a 55-45% split for carries between them...what do you think PK?
Paul Kuharsky (1:24 PM)
I'm with you. Highlights I've seen are tremendous. They can say it's not about Addai, but clearly they've added a weapon and split carries can make them more dangerous. Polian's knew Edge was better than Ricky Williams, he gets benefit of the doubt here.
William (TX)
How much upside does Anthony Hill provide in the Houston offensive play scheme?
Paul Kuharsky (1:27 PM)
He must fit in with their blocking philosophy. Strength and durability are questions, but a good young blocking TE could be a nice addition. He's got some size.
nils (sweden)
paul , what do you think of the marks pick by the titans. does he jump right in and help with the lose of albert hainsworth
Paul Kuharsky (1:28 PM)
I don't thikn of it as a need pick -- they would have been OK with what they had this year. He can replace Tony Brown in a year. If Washburn likes him, who's to argue?
Mike (Philly)
Is there anywhere I can go to see the draft day trades?
Paul Kuharsky (1:29 PM)
It's not something that anyone seems to do very well tracking. KFFL is doing a nice job getting draft details quickly.
Nathan (Finland)
Alot of Centers have been picked. Any idea why? Is it just alot of teams need a new Center prospect, or is this draft really deep with centers/o-linemen
Paul Kuharsky (1:32 PM)
Centers are usually pretty smart and can play guard. So if you need interior depth, one of those guys can probably be a swing guy for you.
Matt (Texas)
Do you think Graham Harrell will ever play in the NFL?
Luke (IN)
The Colts have two picks this round, I feel they need LB's and WR's but do you see them picking a QB like Nate Davis to backup Manning, if not, what positions do you think they go for?
Bill Williamson (1:33 PM)
I could see him playing someday sure. I nthink Denv rlikes him a lot.
Jim (Tampa)
What do you think about Kyle Moore?
Paul Kuharsky (1:33 PM)
You're right on with WR and LB. I think they are content with Sorgi and are not looking yet for Manning's heir by any means.
Bill Williamson (1:33 PM)
I like him. He was well regarded in college. He has a chance.
Tony (Anchorage, Alaska)
Minnesota winning the Super Bowl?
Bill Williamson (1:34 PM)
When?
Jim (Madison)
I'd love the 49ers to pick Harrell today to complement Crabtree. They need more QBs.
Bill Williamson (1:35 PM)
I thnik it would be worth it. What would the 49ers have to lose?
Tanner (Kansas City)
Where do you see the Chiefs going with their 5th round pick Bill?
Bill Williamson (1:35 PM)
Receiver?
chris hahn (wisconsin)
do you think that it was a good idea for dallas to keep trading their draft picks?
Bill Williamson (1:36 PM)
If they don't like what is available, sure. No team should pick if they arem't comfortable.
Jared (Phoenix)
I can;'t beleive the Broncos traded their own 1st rounder next year. That is an automatic top 5-7 pick.
Nick (Nebraska)
Bill, the chiefs need help on the o-line, is there anyone that stands out this late worth taking?
Bill Williamson (1:38 PM)
It really could be, Jared, I like Smith but I don't like giving up a future No. 1 pick. That was rough.
Bob (New Hampshire)
Johnny Knox, 6th or 7th round gem or UDFA?
Bill Williamson (1:38 PM)
I like Knox. I say he's a 6th rounder.
Jake (Ottawa)
After the way Oakland, Denver and KC have drafted, San Diego should have no problem winning the AFC West for the next few years
Bill Williamson (1:39 PM)
San Diego is the class of the division, there is no doubt about it.
Zack (South Carolina)
do you think vikings will do really good next year?
Bill Williamson (1:41 PM)
I kind of like Minnesota. If they get improvd QB play, the Vikings could be very dangerous.
Krissy (Texas)
Do you think it was wise for Dallas to take Stephen McGee when it seems like there were several "better" QBs still on the board? Especially when they also need more help in other areas of the field...
Bill Williamson (1:42 PM)
Dallas was very focused on him. They like him a lot. Denver liked him as well.
jlowens (Texas)
What dp you think about Pack's D now? Where will Raji fit in?
Bill Williamson (1:43 PM)
Raji is going to the nose tackle in the 3-4 defense. He is a great fit there.
Bill Williamson (1:43 PM)
Raji is going to the nose tackle in the 3-4 defense. He is a great fit there.
Chad (Iowa)
Staying with the Chiefs Bill, lot of talk of the Chiefs trading Brian Waters. Is this a spot to maybe look at Duke Robinson or interior lineman for insurance if the right trade comes along?
Bill Williamson (1:44 PM)
That wouldn't surpise me at all, Chad.
Glenn (Westrn CO)
Will the broncos draft a QB? if so who and when?
Bill Williamson (1:45 PM)
There's a lot of guys. Harreell, Hoyer, the kid from Alabama, the kid from Fresno State. They like a lot fo QBs.
Bill Williamson (1:46 PM)
That was quick. Passing it off to the great Matt Mosley. Thanks everyone.
Kevin (Mi)
Why would the lions not drft Laurinaitis or maualuga in the second instead of Delmas?
Matt Mosley (1:51 PM)
Thanks, Bill! We're coming to you live from Radio City Music Hall. Let me have some NFC East question. I have no clue what the Cowboys are doing right now. Very interesting to see the Eagles trade two fifth-rounders for Ellis Hobbs. I have my theories on that one.
John (Downingtown, PA)
Why did the patriots only get two 5th rounders for Ellis Hobbs?
Matt Mosley (1:53 PM)
I don't think Hobbs really emerged like the Pats thought he might after Samuel signed with the Eagles in free agency. He was a better player when he had Samuel back there next to him. I'm not sure what the mental impact on him was after giving up the game-winning TD in Super Bowl XLII. But the Pats are ready to move on without him. And the Eagles had six fifth-rounders. They could afford to use a couple of them on a solid player like Hobbs, who's coming off a down season.
Kyle (Michigan)
why did the lions take pettigrew in the first
Matt Mosley (1:55 PM)
He's a great player. You can fault them on a lot of decisions over the years, but when Pettigrew's the best player on your board, go ahead and take him. Maclin had just gone off the board. I don't have a problem with the Pettigrew pick. Has a chance to be an elite tight end in this league.
Jim (Dallas)
Granted Dallas is making some odd picks, but what could they do at this point to save their draft?
Matt Mosley (1:58 PM)
I'm not sure they can save it at this point. I have no problem with taking Stephen McGee. I'm just not sure if they had to do it that soon. Was there about to be a run on quarterbacks who didn't start in '08? Maybe so. I thought the kid from Western Illinois was quite a reach -- especially after not picking anyone on Day 1. Cowboys haven't done anything to address safety and receiver -- two need positions. Not sure what else I can tell ya.
steve (ct)
The eagles had a great first day but now they are just trading all there picks away..did andy reid sleep in?
Matt Mosley (1:59 PM)
Well, I wouldn't be overly upset about what you did with Hobbs. You can never have too many talented corners. You're pretty much stacked at that position going into '09.
Evan (Minnesota)
Why did the Giants draft a RB when they already have 2 solid RBs?
Matt Mosley (2:02 PM)
Jerry Reese feels like you can never have enough quality running backs, so the Giants seem to enter every season with about five options. Then if someone gets hurt, you don't have to worry about anything. You remember this is the team where Ryan Grant couldn't even get on the field. And Bradshaw has some legal stuff that crops up from time to time. I wouldn't get too worked up over this.
Lawrence Sidbury (Atlanta)
How good am I?
Matt Mosley (2:03 PM)
Oops. Time's already up. Thanks for stopping by. Is Sidbury still on the board???
Kevin Seifert (2:13 PM)
Ok, I'm going to pick up for Matt ... I just jumped out of a press conference with Matthew Staford and the rest of the Lions picks. ... Let's talk NFC North for the next 15 minutes.
Mark (Ecuador)
Is there anyone in this chat anymore? How come we got 3 minutes of Mosley?
Kevin Seifert (2:13 PM)
Not sure what happened there but I'm here now...
Joe (Madison)
How would you grade the packers draft thus far
Kevin Seifert (2:15 PM)
I like the fact that they were able to address the defense and help smooth the transition to the 3-4. Getting two immediate starters, which I assume is the case with Raji and Matthews, is a good first-day haul. The offensive lineman they got is more likely to project as a guard. So overall, I'd give them an A- with the thing still going on.
A.J. (indianapolis)
Alright finally a Vikings guy, where do you see this team heading after the upgrades by the other 3 teams in the NFC North
Kevin Seifert (2:17 PM)
I think the Vikings kept up. Harvin could be a huge gamebreaker, and they might have found their next right tackle in Phil Loadholt. Nice haul on the first day.
Jason (Lexington)
Where does JDB stand with the Vikings?
Kevin Seifert (2:17 PM)
Third string, and deservedly so.
steve (pa)
do you think derrick williams will make an impact with the Lions?
Kevin Seifert (2:18 PM)
Maybe as a returner. That's what I'd expect, especially early on.
Trai (Ohio)
Did The Lions Do Enough In The First Day To At Least Win A Few Games THis Year?
Kevin Seifert (2:19 PM)
I think they'll win a few games, but I don't know if it'll be because of the draft. If all goes well, Stafford won't play right away. Pettigrew could help the run, and I would expect Delmas to challenge for a starting job.
Austin (McBee)
What grade would you give the lions?
Kevin Seifert (2:20 PM)
I'd say a B right now. I'm not a huge fan of drafting a tight end in the first round. I don't care how great of a blocker he is. It's high. And they didn't really address their defensive line until the fourth round, when they took a huge but raw prospect from Spellman. It's not fair to expect them to have filled all of their holes, but they do have some work to do.
Jay (Ohio)
Is Harvin really a better pick for the Vikings than Nicks?
Kevin Seifert (2:22 PM)
Not even close if you're talking about potential. You've got a possession-type receiver versus a game-breaker. If Harvin can keep his attitude in line, he'll be a big-time player.
Canon (Canada)
Do you think the Vikings could have taken Oher and then possibly traded up to get Nicks or addressed their WR concerns elsewhere?
Kevin Seifert (2:24 PM)
They were really focused on Harvin. That's who they wanted. Whether they could have taken Oher and still gotten Harvin a bit later, I don't think so.
Scott (iowa)
thats like 10 straight questions from the nfc north. i know ur background, but come on, can we talk about a real conference?
Kevin Seifert (2:24 PM)
Your time will come.
cullen (chicago)
say something about the bears
Kevin Seifert (2:24 PM)
Something.
Matt (Sheboygan, WI)
Ted Thompson broke character yesterday, going with quality over quantity. How much did the Packers help themselves?
Kevin Seifert (2:26 PM)
Well, I don't pretend to be able to evaluate whether Clay Matthews Jr. is really a great prospect or not. But the Packers people think he is. So to be able to execute a trade that allows you to get him, while also getting Raji, makes for a bigt-time day.
David (Ann Arbor)
So as if I wasn't crushed enough that the lions passed on Aaron Curry, they ignored the MLB and D-line with their next two picks. Why ignore those needs and go for Pettigrew?
Kevin Seifert (2:27 PM)
They've been saying they would follow their value chart and they have been. I think they see Pettigrew impacting their running game almost as much as a new offensive tackle would. And the running game is definitely one of their needs. But I agree that the Lions haven't given themselves a great chance of improving their interior defense so far in this draft. Louis Delmas better be ready to lead the team in tackles.
Nick (Chicago)
How would you say the Bears are doing? And why?
Kevin Seifert (2:28 PM)
Well, they eventually addressed the receiver situation. Two interesting prospects. The Oklahoma kid could be a really good, younger version of Marty Booker. And the kid they just took is a burner. Apparently ran a 4.28.
Michael Hendel (NY)
How are the vikings going to use Percy Harvin on an every game basis?
Tony (Cali)
enough NFC North, try NFC West!
Kevin Seifert (2:29 PM)
I think that's going to be one of the big questions heading into training camp. Will Brad Childress come up with some innovative ways to use him? Or will they just insert him as a slot receiver in their regular offense?
Pat Yasinskas (2:29 PM)
How 'bout we go with NFC South for the next 15 minutes? NFC West goes live when Mike Sando comes on at 2:45. Thanks Kevin.
Kevin Seifert (2:30 PM)
Ok, I'm going to hand things off to Pat Yasinskas of NFC South fame.
Jim (Raleigh)
How do you feel about the Saint's defensive picks?
Kevin Seifert (2:31 PM)
Like the picks a lot. Glad to see Payton stayed with the plan to work on the defense.
Jonathan (Canada)
Should Carolina draft a QB?
Pat Yasinskas (2:31 PM)
Don't be surprised if Brian Hoyer's name comes up there.
Ryan (Pennsylvania)
Do you think that the Saints will draft a running back to help Thomas and Reggie? I was hoping they would draft Rashad Jennings, but they didnt.
Pat Yasinskas (2:33 PM)
Was hoping for that, too. But they might be content with Mike Bell as their short-yardage guy. They might not have much other choice.
Zack (Tally)
Byron Leftwich was not a very good player for Jacksonville. Do you think he can turn it around in Tampa Bay?
Pat Yasinskas (2:33 PM)
Not looking that way now. Heck, Leftwich may not even be on the roster coming out of the preseason.
Bert (Boston)
payton just said they wanted beanie but couldn't get back up into the 1st round
Pat Yasinskas (2:34 PM)
True. He also said that yesterday. Check the NFC South blog. The reason they didn't do it was they would have had to give up next year's first-round pick.
Evan (Minnesota)
With the Saint's pick of Chip Vaughn, does that mean that the Saints don't think Darren Sharper can get the job done?
Pat Yasinskas (2:35 PM)
No, just means they're looking beyond this year. Sharper's probably a 1-year guy.
Nathan (Louisiana)
but they do have the number 1 offense in the nfl
Pat Yasinskas (2:36 PM)
Like that pick a lot. He's got talent and Mike Smith can coach him up.
David (Auburn)
What do you think on the Panthers (3rd in rushing in 08) taking a RB then FB? Was Goodson contacted about becoming a slot receiver and return man?
Pat Yasinskas (2:37 PM)
Yes, he also will be in return mix. But I think they also wanted him to kind of fill the Nick Goings role in the backfield.
Jason (Oklahoma)
what good does it do to submit a question when it doesn't even get posted?
Pat Yasinskas (2:38 PM)
Keep them coming. There are thousands of questions on here. We answer as many as we can.
Ryan (Atlanta)
Mr. Yasinskas - have the Falcons adequately addressed their needs on defense? Every pick they've made has been aimed at addressing a need - but most pundits seem to be luke warm on their picks. What gives?
Pat Yasinskas (2:38 PM)
I like the picks. Nothing flashy, but they're addressing their needs.
JIM (CA)
Caralina needs a back up Qb who will they pick
Pat Yasinskas (2:39 PM)
Brian Hoyer -- just a guess.
Isaac (Ohio)
When do you think Josh Freeman will begin starting in Tampa?
Pat Yasinskas (2:40 PM)
Yes, I do. After Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco last year, I think the pressure is there to get a young QB on the field.
Jonathan (Miami)
Why does Tampa always pick QB's it never works for them
Pat Yasinskas (2:42 PM)
They haven't picked one in the first round in 15 years. Dilfer and Testaverde weren't busts. They just had horrible teams around them.
Dale (Ft Hood , TX)
Does Atlanta now target linebacker with their last draft picks?
Pat Yasinskas (2:42 PM)
that would seem to be the logical move now.
James (Tampa)
Is Leftwich going to get a fair shot to start in Tampa? I really never understood why he never really stirred much interest when he has been a solid starter in the league.
Pat Yasinskas (2:43 PM)
No, he won't. I'm not even sure he'll be on the roster by the regular season.
Anthony (Syracuse, NY)
Will Michael Jenkins become a immediate impact on Defense for the Saints?
Pat Yasinskas (2:44 PM)
No, but Malcolm Jenkins will. He'll either start or be nickel back right away.
Jack (Greensboro)
How do you feel about the panthers draft? Do you feel their first rounder this year was worth getting Jeff Otah last year?
Pat Yasinskas (2:46 PM)
You can't question the Otah deal. He was very good as a rookie and big part of the reason you were 12-4. With that, I'll hand off to Mike Sando and the NFC West. Thank you.
Sam (Fort Worth)
How quickly will Michaael Crabtree impact the 49ers
Mike Sando (2:50 PM)
I could see some growing pains in the short term as Michael Crabtree finds out what it's like to work under fiery special-teams coach Jerry Sullivan. It's an upset, however, if Crabtree does not start from Day One. I think he'll make an immediate impact.
Chris (iowa)
hey Mike what do u think of the 49ers day 2 so far
Mike Sando (2:51 PM)
Getting the RB in the third round was about right. I figured they would do that in that range. Coffee is a physical back. He seems to fit the profile, particularly if he beefs up a little. McKillop? Not so sure about the impact, but we are into the fifth round.
ryan (tenn)
How do you seen Beanie Wells fitting in Arizona's backfield?
Mike Sando (2:53 PM)
As the starter sooner rather than later. I would think he'll get every chance to win the job as a rookie. The impetus is on the coaching staff to mold Wells into a harder-nosed player. That's the knock on him.
Dameion (Philly)
How do you think Aaron Curry will perform for the hawks?
Mike Sando (2:54 PM)
I think he'll start from Day One and make his impact felt right away. I wonder if Lofa Tatupu will bounce back strong this year or if Curry will challenge him for best LB on the team in 2009.
AG (Missouri)
How do you think the Rams have done with draft so far? Do you think that they need a QB or WR?
Mike Sando (2:56 PM)
The Rams have too many needs to fill them all. They do have WR needs but if they satisfied those needs, we might be asking about another position. I agree with them not going after a QB right away given how much they've got invested in Bulger and how many other needs they have.
Andrew (Arizona)
How do you think the Cardinals have done i nthe draft?
Mike Sando (2:58 PM)
I thought they might find a tight end or offensive lineman earlier. Getting the RB in the first round was a must. From that standpoint, it's a promising draft.
AJ (Germany)
What's the likelyhood of Anquan Bolding being traded this far into the draft?
Mike Sando (2:59 PM)
Cannot see it happening.
Tony (Cali)
McKillop, good pick?
Mike Sando (2:59 PM)
It's hard to criticize a fifth-round pick for a linebacker who will help on special teams right away.
Buzzmaster (3:04 PM)
Gary Horton is here everyone!
Gary Horton (3:06 PM)
As a former scout, Day 2 was always my favorite day of the year. That's when the work of a scout is really evaluated and pays dividends. Most coaches and GMs do not have the depth of knowledge on Day 2 players and the rely on the scouts to dig players out. There's a tremendous amount of pride in finding guys that have a chance to make your team. Remember, Day 2 is a great opportunity to improve the back end of your roster and build your depth. All of these teams take these picks seriously.
Roy (Las Vegas)
You think someone is going to jump on trading for the rights to Mike Vick?
Gary Horton (3:07 PM)
There has been a lot of speculation that that scenario could happen today. A lot of people feel that nobody will take a flier on Vick until he's cleared to play. But I wouldn't be surprised if someone gives up a future late round pick to secure his rights. I think it's a risk that some teams would be willing to take.
Jason (Scottsdale)
I do not believe Vick will play in the NFL again
Ryan (Tallahassee)
Is everyone overhyping BB's draft genius in New England? Why not take Clay Matthews or Laurninaitis with that 23rd pick. They still had plenty of picks later on to make moves. Confused Pats fan here.
Gary Horton (3:09 PM)
Well, first of all, in my opinion, nobody does a better job of working the draft than Belichick. He is a master at moving around the draft and acquiring extra picks, sometimes even into the next year. One of the reasons this is so successful for them is that Belichick personally watches film and works out these mid-round guys. Maybe more than any other head coach in the NFL, he has a feel for these guys and a strong opinion on who he wants.
Gary Horton (3:11 PM)
Also, Belichick has a philosophy that you don't have to do everything to play for him. He takes what you do well and expands on that. So, he can plug in a lot of players in situations. He recognizes what their strengths are. I did think that Clay Matthews would have been a perfect fit at No. 23. He reminds me a lot of Mike Vrabel. But I think the philosophy of the Patriots in this draft is that the value at 23 wasn't that much better than the value at 34 where they traded down to. Now you're paying a lot more money for a second round pick than a first round pick and you're getting extra picks for that. I thought the value was just as good in the early second than the late first. That's why they made that move.
Scott (Sacramento CA)
I was surprised at the Pat White pick for Miami. Are the Fish going to go ever farther with a modified Wildcat?
Gary Horton (3:15 PM)
I think they're enamored with trying to expand the Wildcat. Let me illustrate a story that relates to this. When Bill Parcels was with ESPN a year ago, we worked on Monday Night Countdown together. He asked me one Monday if I could get some Arkansas film and watch this Wildcat formation that Arkansas had some success with it and talk about it next week. I was wondering why he wanted that since he wasn't in the NFL anymore. We watched the film and he was fascinated. I didn't think of it any more until last fall when Miami started running the Wildcat against New England. That's how smart Bill Parcells is, he was exploring an offensive scheme just in case he was going to go back into the NFL. That's a great football mind. He was way ahead of his time. I think the Pat White pick was brilliant. That will give defenses nightmares trying to figure out how to defend the Wildcat. At this point, the guy taking the direct snap has been a RB and that has somewhat limited the throwing options. If you have a QB at that spot, that means you have to defend the pass and the run. Pat White may be a better QB than people think.
Gary Horton (3:16 PM)
He could certainly be the second or third QB on the team.
Steve (Montana)
Dolphins are't fish!
Phil (TX)
Umm, why did Houston take two TE's consecutively?
Gary Horton (3:20 PM)
I think both of these guys probalby had higher grades on them than this round indicates. When you're looking at your value board, it exposes guys that you graded high but are still on the board. AT this stage, a lot of teams are looking for the best available player, regardless of position. This is a little unusual. Casey looks like a guy who could be an H-back, on the move kind of guy which would give them some versatility. He would not be used as a blocking TE. Hill has the chance to develop into a bigger guy and he's probably a better blocker. You're getting versatility and a guy who could be your blocker in short yardage. Athletic TEs also make good special teams players. That's something you really value in Day 2, guys who can be on the cover teams.
Zach (Indiana)
The draft is about value not needs. You want to collect as much talent as possible.
Gary Horton (3:23 PM)
That's a great question and it's not clear cut. There isn't a consensus on how to go. I've always been of the school that on Day 2 you look at your value board. That reminds you of the players that are still available and have high grades. It becomes very easy to say that we need a guard and we go get one but there's a WR with a much higher grade that's still on the board. You're passing on a better football player to fill a need. That can really water down your second day because you're taking players that don't have the talent level that you could have. Having said that, there are specific needs that you try to fill out on Day 2.
Gary Horton (3:25 PM)
If you're weak at a certain position, you're hoping to find a guy to fill that out. A lot of teams in the last 3-4 rounds will look more at those needs rather than value. In my opinion, the teams that draft the best push the envelope on Day 2 and are still looking for the best player, regardless of position. If the draft's over and I have some training camp needs, I can fill those by signing some free agents.
Dan (Wisconsin)
Unless your the Raiders then neither value nor needs apply.
Gary Horton (3:30 PM)
Their first two picks were absolutely shocking. Not who they picked, but when they picked them. I know why they liked Heyward-Bey - he's big and he has great speed. He's a vertical threat that Al Davis loves. I get that, especially with them not having a legit 40 time on Crabtree. In the second round, they schocked everybody by taking Michael Mitchell. He's big, physical and he really runs well. The Raiders have really struggled at getting the safety position right. However, the big concern here, on the outside looking in, is little bit philosophical.
Gary Horton (3:34 PM)
When making these picks, the Raiders decided they liked these guys and they don't care where they picked them. There are a handful of teams that say I don't care what people say, we're going to do what we do. To me, this is a very flawed philosophy. You have to know what the other teams are thinking and you have to pay attention to projections. In both of these cases, you can still get those players, but not that high. Heyward-Bey, you could have gotten him 10 slots higher. With Mitchell, you could have gotten him in the 3-4 round perhaps. The Raiders liked these two guys, which is fine, but you can debate where they took them. It really minimizes your chance to build your draft. When I was in the league, our coaches would really try to pin us down as to what round a guy would go in. For instance if I was in a love with a guy, and I would tell them that he would probably go in the fifth round, we'd probably look to get him in the 4th round. You don't want to get too cute. That's why you have to know the draft and know where the players are projected.
Gary Horton (3:37 PM)
You could also make the argument that the Raiders tried to trade down and no one wanted to trade up. But my counterpoint would be that you don't have to get a lot to move. you can make it very comfortable for your trading partner. Not to mention you are getting the player you like for a lot less money.
Joe (Chicago)
Are the Bears getting good value picks in Day 2?
Gary Horton (3:39 PM)
I'm not sure you can get impact guys on Day 2 consistently. Although you can obviously get lucky and hit on some players now and then. But I think what you can do on Day 2, you can improve the back end of your roster, your special teams by acquiring role players. I think a lot of people underestimate the value of building. Really good teams are always trying to upgrade that back end and are never satisfied with it. The better your backend is, the more stable you will be. For the Bears, this isn't a very sexy draft, but you have to throw in Jay Cutler. He's their big factor in this draft.
Steven (Baltimore)
What do you think about the cowboys draft so far? They have moved down a couple times to get more picks but are they going to be any better this year for it?
Gary Horton (3:43 PM)
That's a very good question because the Cowboys in recent years have had that win now mentality. They were willing to give up draft picks because they wanted immediate help, because they were a Super Bowl team. Now, all of a sudden, it seems like that philosophy has shifted. They have gotten rid of their character guys. The way they are handling this draft, it's almost like they are being patient and willing to build their back end. I think if they finish off this draft with a great Day 2, they will improve their depth. I don't think they will put a better product on the field. I'm not sure they'll draft a difference maker today. To truly evaluate their draft, you have to throw Roy Williams into the mix. He's basically their first round pick this year. So, when you add Roy Williams and a bunch of second day guys, it probably looks better. I think it's a fascinating change of philosophy.
Jon (Ohio)
The Chiefs have gone all defense. Will we see a real change?
Gary Horton (3:47 PM)
Yes, I do. I think it started in the last two years when they realized they had to totally rebuild this roster. They were trying to do it through the draft. It probably cost Herm Edwards his job. Even though he was a good company man and realized this might be a 2-3 year project and he was willing to go along with it. They have a good group of players now, especially on defense to build around. I think they have helped themselves in this draft by adding to that defense. They also have to acquire players that will play on a new team, going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. That takes a different set of skills. Scott Pioli knows exactly what he wants in a player. Their scouts are well versed in what those skills are and they will not deviate from the plan. I think the Chiefs are closer to being competitive than a lot of people realize. I think their decision to build through the draft the last couple of years makes them a young team with good athleticism. Now, with a franchise QB. I would not be surprised if they are the second best team in the AFC West next year.
Shad (Palm Springs)
Lions should start Stafford on Day One a la manning and Aikman. Thoughts?
Gary Horton (3:51 PM)
I know that a lot of football people think that it's good to sit and learn. But I think that if you're going to pick a guy with the first pick, why not put him in and let him grow with the team. You don't learn a lot from sitting and watching. But there have been successes at the QB position in both scenarios. The question for Stafford is what kind of protection will you have? The risk you have is if he plays from Day 1, if he takes a lot of hits and has little success, it wears you down physically and mentally. They do have a veteran QB in Daunte Culpepper. He could have good success in this offense and he could be a good mentor to Stafford. I think if the Lions are comfortable with their pass protection, I wouldn't mind having Stafford as my starter from Day 1 and say, this is your team. It worked for Matt Ryan a year ago. But it's a difficult decision.
Gary Horton (3:52 PM)
Ironically, I'm a little torn about whether Stafford starts or not. But if I go to the fifth selection in Mark Sanchez with the Jets, in my mind, that's a no-brainer. He's my starter from Day 1. There is no QB controversy. He's going to lead the re-birth of this franchise.
Phil (Baltimore)
"In Ozzy, we trust." Can you grade Baltimore's draft thus far?
Gary Horton (3:56 PM)
I was a scout for the Cleveland Browns when Ozzie finished his playing career. When he decided that he wanted to be involved in personnel, I used to sit with him and watch film for long periods of time. I was fascinated that a guy that was such a great player and was just coming off of that career had such a great feel for personnel. Not only does Ozzie evaluate players well, but I think he has a rare big picture feel. He knows where players fit. He knows how to maneuver the draft. I think his best ability may be the fact that he really listens to his scouts and coaches. If you give him the right information, nobody is better at diciphering it. As an example, I love what they did in the first round. They needed a OT and Michael Oher was sitting there. Ozzie decided to move up and they filled a need with a guy that will play for a long time. He's not afraid to make bold moves when necessary. I continue to be amazed year in and year out for his feel for the draft, in knowing when to move up, move down or to stand pat. That speaks to his information gathering and preparation.
brandon (underwood)
The packers trading up to get Clay Mathews was interesting but can u grade the packers draft so far?
Gary Horton (3:59 PM)
I absolutely loved both of their first round picks. This is a defense switching to a 3-4 scheme. You now have a guy in Raji who can be a space eater inside and dominate at the nose position. He can solidify the interior of that defense. I like the Matthews pick even more. He's the perfect guy to play OLB in that scheme. He can play outside, he can rush off the edge. He can drop into coverage in the nickel look. I think the Green Bay fans will fall in love with this guy. He's the epitome of what that town stands for. He's a self-made player and a hard worker. If you look at his bloodline, this is a guy who will be a solid player for 10+ years as a Packer. I think those were two outstanding moves.
Scott (Minnesota)
Tag, Was the Vikings pick of a Harvin a logical pick considering the QB questions?
Gary Horton (4:03 PM)
I really liked Minnesota's pick. I think that Harvin will improve this offense, because he is now a legit deep threat and his presence will discourage teams from loading up in the box. This was a guy that the teams were in love with. I like the fact that Brad Childress went to Florida, spent time with his coaches and with Percy. He went to Jacksonville to spend time with his family. They talked about it as an organization. I think they were very comfortable with Percy Harvin as a person. They have a strong lockerroom. Harvy comes from a good family. Even though he's made some mistakes, I think there's a strong feeling that he's not a bad person and they're comfortable with it. One of the things that Childress has done is clean up this lockerroom. I like that they really did their due diligence when they made their selection. Character is important and they're also comfortable with that character. I think he has a chance to be an impact player.
Gary Horton (4:03 PM)
This has been a fun two days, with a certain share of drama, led by the Mark Sanchez pick. Now in the next several days, we'll get a chance to really look at these drafts and evaluate them. I'm always very hesitant to throw a grade on a draft, even though fans love it. It takes time to see how a player will fit in and a lot of times you won't know for 2-3 years how a player turns out. With that said, every expert in America will have their grades on the draft tomorrow and I, like everyone else, will read them. But I don't like grading a draft so early. But that's what the world wants and that's what we'll give them. Mel's been doing it for years and he's great at absorbing that information early. Both he and Todd do a great job.
Doug Farrar (4:07 PM)
Doug Farrar from Football Outsiders here. Ready to take your questions, though following Gary Horton is like going onstage after Hendrix. Let's talk draft and offseason!
Greg (East Rutherford)
What's your analysis on Cal Poly WR Ramses Barden, who was drafted by the Giants in round 3?
Doug Farrar (4:10 PM)
I like Barden, and he fits an obvious need with his 6-6 frame. He can get downfield in a hurry with major strides. He's the jump-ball guy, the red-zone threat, and the security blanket Eli Manning hasn't really had since certain events unfolded. It shoes that the Giants are aware of the value of that kind of receiver in their system and are willing to move on instead of holding fast to a player due to overwhelming offensive value. Smart move.
Ravi (Boca Raton)
Ted Thompson has done a great job of getting rid of bad odor left my Mike Sherman. What do you think of the job Ted Thompson has done?
Doug Farrar (4:14 PM)
In my opinion, Thompson is one of the best in the business at weighing talent and scheme. He works very well in conjunction with Mike McCarthy to put players in positions to succeed. When they transitioned from Favre to Aaron Rodgers, they had a nice pseudo-spread system in place that played to the strengths of the new guy. I think the defense fell apart a little faster than they expected (Exhibit A: Charles Woodson playing safety!), but in the long term, I think the Packers are in great shape with Thompson as the helm. As a Seattle resident, I was familiar with Thompson from his work with Mike Holmgren's teams and I always had a very positive view of his moves and analysis.
Phil (Idaho)
What do you think of the Seahawks drafting Mike Teel? It seems like we could of drafted another position or maybe a higher rated QB.
Doug Farrar (4:18 PM)
I find it interesting that they took Teel in the fifth with Central Washington's Mike Reilly still on the board. Reilly broke most of Jon Kitna's records at Central, the Seahawks were looking at him pretty hard there for a while, and I know that Greg Cosell (Producer of State Farm NFL Matchup) thought he was the fourth-best QB in the draft behind Stafford, Sanchez, and Freeman. I'm not as familiar with Teel, but I do find the pick surprising.
Mitch (Baltimore)
What do you think of the Ravens draft so far? Personally, I'm very surprised that they haven't picked up a receiver and waited until the 3rd round to grab a corner. Your views?
Doug Farrar (4:22 PM)
Heh -- half the questions in queue are as follows: "Why haven't the Ravens taken a receiver yet?" I'll be interested to see if they take a shot late or with the undrafted kids. The most interesting thing to me about Baltimores draft if the Oher pick -- the Ravens love to run odd formations with power, stacking their tackles, and this is a great move. They must feel comfortable with the power running game, and are looking to reinforce that and the defense that has some challenges now.
Luke (Indiana)
Seahawks should have drafted Curtis Painter from Purdue
Doug Farrar (4:24 PM)
I like Painter -- wrote the pool report about him at the Combine. What I liked about him was his ability to gauge the timing and speed of his throws for different receivers. That sounds like it's not a big deal, but you'd be surprised at how many big-armed guys are throwing airballs out there on the post corner.
Zach (OK)
what do you think of Chicago drafting Abilene Christian WR Johnny Knox in the 5th round?
Doug Farrar (4:27 PM)
He's an interesting speed guy who really flew up the boards at the Combine. The Bears are seriously addressing the receiver position, and I love the Iglesias pick. Iglesias is that reliable slot receiver who will be a quarterback's best friend. Guys like Knox benefit from big-armed quarterbacks, and there certainly is one in Chitown now...
Mayor McCheese (San Francisco)
Do think SF drafting Pascoe signals that relations between Vernon Davis and Singletery are at a breaking point?
Doug Farrar (4:29 PM)
Pascoe's really not that guy -- he's almost the anti-Davis. A concussive blocker and an instant upgrade on special teams. More of a Will Heller or Jeff King than the kind of ostensibly elite athlete Davis is.
TimmyP (Mo)
What overall grade would you give the Pittsburgh Steelers so far in this draft?
Doug Farrar (4:33 PM)
I love the Evander Hood pick -- I interviewed him pre-draft and I think any team would be happy to have him from a personality standpoint. Urbik's a good power guy at a real need position -- I was wondering if they might take Duke Robinson before he fell down the boards. Wallace is your downfield speed guy, Keenan Lewis is a physical corner with some injury issues. It's generally foolish to grade the Steelers' drafts low -- history's on their side. I'm very impressed with Hood -- that's for sure.
Zac (NoDak)
What overall grade would you give the Denver Broncos so far in this draft?
Doug Farrar (4:38 PM)
Giving up a first-round pick next year (a strong class) to move up in this weaker class had me shaking my head. Moreno's a great side-to-side runner who will really show out behind that offensive line -- wait until he sees Ryan Clady!
Doug Farrar (4:39 PM)
Mixed reports in Ayers, love the Alphonso Smith pick, and Bruton from Notre Dame is an interesting player Most of the people I talked to in the last few months who are better at diagnosing these things then I am had him in their sleeper lists.
Craig (Royal Palm)
I've been asking about Frantz Joseph all weekend and NO ONE has answered me. Are you afraid? Do you know nothing about him and are embarrassed? or are you just going to trash him but still afraid that he will succeed, thus making you look like a fool. Which is it? Please humor me and just tell me a little something about where Frantz Joseph might go.
Doug Farrar (4:43 PM)
Ladies and gentlemen, Frantz's mom is in the house. Mrs. Joseph, your son is a good linebacker who fell under the radar at Florida Atlantic but was good enough to get a first look from Boston College. A good downhill guy perhaps similar to Cal's Zack Follett.
Nick (Vero Beach)
What grade would you give tha dolphins draft??
Doug Farrar (4:45 PM)
First of all, I love the Pat White pick. We've been writing a lot about the Wildcat since that game against the Pats easly last season, and he makes that offense much more expansive with his ability to run and throw. PIcking up Vontae Davis AND Sean Smith -- well, we know that they saw the cornerback problem and are going all-out to address it.
Andy (New York)
Hey Doug, what do you think of the Jets 3rd round pick, going with Grene at RB (even though both Jets RBs went to the 2008 pro bowl and Jones was the AFCs leading rusher)and giving up 3 picks only leaving them with one more, instead of addressing their WR and TE needs.
Doug Farrar (4:49 PM)
Greene's an interesting guy, Well-known as a one-year wonder, some academic issues in his past, but he does have that punishing style most teams want in at least a platoon system. The compressing of multi picks to get a couple is odd, but I'm so in line with the Sanchez pick, I'm not too unhappy with the methodology.
Jerry (Jerry)
How do you feel about the Vikings addressing wr then tackle with Harvin and Loadholt instead of grabbing Oher and a WR in the second round?
Doug Farrar (4:51 PM)
It shows me that the Vikings have made a few tenuous steps toward the idea that they might not exactly have the quarterback of the future. Harvin is an option threat, and Loadholt is a total cement mixer who will slide over to right tackle.
Doug Farrar (4:51 PM)
Now, all they have to do is re-incorporate the passing game somewhere down thte road.
Ryan (Detroit)
The Lion franchise is doomed. Why would they take anything other than defensive players? Can you explain why they would take a running back as low rated as Brown when they still need a middle LB and a D line?
Doug Farrar (4:54 PM)
Well, I like the Pettigrew pick a lot, and Louis Delmas was one of my favorite defensive player class. They got Sammie Lee Hill from Stillman as that big guy in the middle, as well. Julian Peterson will be a great acquisition if they can keep him assignment-correct. I understand that Lions fans have become beyond frustrated, but understand that there are new sheriffs in town. I'm on board with their draft overall.
Jordan (Philly)
Doug, what do you think about the Eagles draft so far? I like Maclin, but I don't think he's what they need. I loved the 5th round pick of CB Harris.
Doug Farrar (4:57 PM)
After watching the top ten receivers, I had Maclin rated second after Crabtree and ahead of Harvin. I love his quickness off the blocks, and his ability to get open in zones. And he's so fast in his cuts. Watch Heyward-Bay make a cut, and it looks like Maclin in slow motion. I don't think he's Desean Jackson redux because Jackson strikes me more as a straight-line guy. And Macho Harris was a nice value pick.
Andy (Toledo)
Im tired of hearing about the Rams, Eagles, Jets, and Dolphins. Can we please get analysis of the Ohio teams. I know they get disrespected on the field, but at least give me a grade on their draft so far..
Doug Farrar (4:59 PM)
Browns -- Love the Mack and Robiskie picks. Don Carey of Norfolk state was a guy getting a lot of interest from the Seahawks, Dolphins, and Steelers. Veikune is a good rotation guy for a team that needs someone else besides Shaun Rogers to pressure the quarterback.
Doug Farrar (5:00 PM)
Bengals -- I don't know. I love the Maualuga pick -- that guy's just an evil downhill tackler -- but I have serious questions about Michael Johnson. I'm hoping that Andre Smith can prove some people wrong.
Doug Farrar (5:01 PM)
Time for me to bail out here, folks -- FO Big Kahuna Aaron Schatz is ready to go!
Aaron Schatz (5:04 PM)
Yep, yep. Ready to rock, for a half hour, then I turn you all over to Bill Barnwell. Let me start with two questions about this year's draft. First, the Rams just used a sixth-round pick on Mike Null of West Texas A&M. Wasn't the quarterback coach at West Texas A&M Ryan Leaf? Yikes! Second, what is the deal with Sen'Derrick Marks? Does the apostrophe serve a purpose? Is it a glotteral stop, like in Hawai'ian or Arabic?
Sam (CA)
How do you feel about Chicago's draft considering they traded away both their first and second round picks?
Aaron Schatz (5:06 PM)
Well, they traded that first-rounder away in the deal to get Cutler, who was a big upgrade at quarterback. Hard to argue with that. I think they did a good job of addressing needs with their first few picks, once they had picks. They needed defensive line depth -- that's been a problem in recent years when injuries hit -- and when you are running Devin Hester out there as your top receiver, it probably helps to have a possession guy who can catch the underneath routes that Hester will clear out. Iglesias should fit there.
Joe (Detroit)
What teams that still need WR help may consider signing Marvin Harrison?
Aaron Schatz (5:09 PM)
Honestly, none. I don't see a place for Harrison at this point. He's never been a guy with no life outside of football who had to play no matter what, and I don't know if he really feels like taking less money somewhere to be a third receiver. He's been in massive decline the last two seasons. You also have to remember that it is harder to sign veterans like Harrison as third receivers because they won't play special teams.
Will (Dallas)
why are the cowboys getting so linebacker happy with their picks?
Aaron Schatz (5:11 PM)
There's nothing wrong with building linebacker depth when you play a 3-4 defense.
Chase (Huntington)
Don't you agree Darius Passmore has the best wide receiver last name in the draft?
Aaron Schatz (5:12 PM)
I wonder if he is friends with Oakland A's pitcher Josh Outman.
Eddie (Tampa Fl)
Do you think Miami Dolphins have had a good draft with getting CB Davis, Pat White, etc?
Aaron Schatz (5:15 PM)
I like what the Dolphins have done today. They definitely had secondary issues, and going with two cornerbacks in the first three picks is a good thing. (They were #30 in the FO DVOA stats last year against number-two wide receivers.) I hope for the Dolphins' sake that Davis doesn't have the same effort and practice issues as his big brother. The White pick is so perfect that I burst out laughing when I heard it. The Dolphins are going to be able to run so many funky offensive formations next year, it is going to be a ton of fun to watch and not very fun to prepare for each week. I still think this is a team heading downwards -- harder schedule and virtually no chance they repeat their almost entirely injury-free 2008 -- but this draft could definitely help reverse that trend.
Caleb (Indianapolis)
Could Curtis Painter one day be a starter for the Colts?
Aaron Schatz (5:16 PM)
Yes, and that day will be known to everybody as "Week 17."
adam (chicago)
why are there more then 32 picks in every round after the 2nd?
Aaron Schatz (5:17 PM)
The NFL gives compensatory picks based on the value of the free agents that each team lost in the previous offseason. These picks begin at the end of the third round and, for those who don't know, can't be traded to another team. Which seriously bums Bill Belichick out, I'm sure.
Kevin (Blacksburg)
Are any players from this draft going to be important for the Steelers besides Ziggy Hood?
Aaron Schatz (5:19 PM)
Yes. The question is when. The Steelers do a fabulous job of drafting not for the coming season but for two and three seasons down the road. They can do that because they are successful and deep. Woodley and Timmons, for example, both played a much bigger role in 2008 than in 2007. The picks today are all about the 2010 and 2011 Steelers.
Chris (PA)
Who do you think was the best Mr. Irrelevant player ever
Aaron Schatz (5:21 PM)
Marty Moore is the guy who comes to mind. Backup linebacker, spent eight years in the league for the Patriots and Browns.
Evan (Minnesota)
Now that the Eagles have Jeremy Maclin, what will happen to Hank Baskett? Will he be traded to another team?
Aaron Schatz (5:23 PM)
I doubt it. Baskett's a depth guy, but he's never been anything more than a depth guy, really. A good depth guy, but depth nonetheless, not a starter. Maclin, Baskett, and Avant will all see the field. (Greg Lewis is gone, remember, traded to New England.)
Aaron Schatz (5:24 PM)
Hey, look, Ra'shan Harris was drafted by the Steelers. He should hang out in Hawai'i with Sen'Derrick Marks.
David (Italy)
Bill Belichick's draft so far - any thoughts?
Aaron Schatz (5:26 PM)
It's almost as if economics professors Cade Massey and Richard Thaler are sitting in the Patriots draft room this year next to Belichick. Those are the guys who wrote the paper saying that second-round picks were more economically efficient than first-round picks. The Patriots drafted depth in places they needed depth, and they also stocked up with two extra second-rounders for NEXT year. I swear, one of these years they'll just trade around and get the entire second round. The one thing I wonder about is not taking a linebacker with one of those second-round picks, but they're high on Pierre Woods and I'm guessing we'll see more Shawn Crable this year (last year's third-rounder).
Aaron Schatz (5:27 PM)
Oh, and the long-snapper thing in the sixth is cute. Hey, often these sixth and seventh rounders are just going to end up as special teams guys anyway, so if you are going to blow a pick on a special teams specialist, do it now, not in the second or third round like some teams do...
Joe (Philly)
Ive been asking this question all day can someone ANSWER PLEASE!!!!! Who do you think the Eagles starting recievers will be? Maclin, and Jackson? and now that the Eagles signed Victor Harris, and traded for Ellis Hobbs do you think they will trade sheldon brown for someone like Anquan Boldin or Braylon Edwards?
Aaron Schatz (5:29 PM)
The starting receivers will be DeSean Jackson and Kevin Curtis, and I don't see them trading Brown. Brown was one of the best cover corners in the league last year according to the FO game charting numbers, and the Eagles are a smart enough team that I would bet they have similar research.
Vincent (London)
Are you surprised that the Pats dumped Hobbs? Sure he struggled at CB, but he might have been the top kickoff returner in the league. Pretty dynamic in that role. How will the Pats replace that? Tate?
Aaron Schatz (5:31 PM)
I'm surprised they traded Hobbs a little, I've never been as down on him as some other people, but they did add a lot of CB depth in free agency this year and in the last two drafts, and his contract number is fairly high. As for kickoff returner, I'm sure they'll find someone. Hobbs is good, but please, let's not go saying ridiculous things. The best kickoff returner in the league is Josh Cribbs, period. Leon Washington is pretty easily ahead of Hobbs too.
Jerad (TX)
What do you think about the Cowboys draft so far? They have only picked up one safety and no receivers. Do you think Jerry has changed or is he doing his normal 2000's drafting?
Aaron Schatz (5:35 PM)
The Cowboys have their high-drafted receiver -- effectively, Roy Williams is their number-one pick this year. There's no reason for them to just throw picks at later-round guys who are probably no better than free agents out there. The Cowboys draft actually makes a lot of sense. Last year, we saw what happens when a team with no depth loses one of its best players. The Cowboys have gone about drafting depth behind their best guys - a guy to back up Flozell Adams, a guy to back up Ware, a guy to back up Romo. If their scouts have done their due dilligence, it is a good strategy given their depth issues.
Matzuye (Japan)
hey aaron how do you like the broncos draft so far?
Aaron Schatz (5:38 PM)
I would not have taken Knowshon Moreno that high. I don't think any of this year's backs were worth a pick that high. The rest seems fine but what I don't get is that Josh McDaniel is supposed to have learned under Bill Belichick, right? No team has done a better job than the Patriots when it comes to building draft value by dealing a lower pick this year for a higher round pick next year. And yet, McDaniels is the guy who deals his first-rounder to Seattle to move up in the second round! What happens if all the change in Denver results in a down season and that's a top ten pick they're sending up to the Seahawks?
Buzzmaster (5:45 PM)
Testing! Hang on folks! Having a technical hiccup!
Bill Barnwell (6:24 PM)
Testing...
Bill Barnwell (6:25 PM)
Alright, everyone -- sorry about that. Ran into some technical difficulties, but I think we're going to be good to go.
Bill Barnwell (6:26 PM)
I'm Bill Barnwell -- yet another of the Football Outsiders. Let's get this chat going again.
Adam (Washington)
Why is cosby still available? He seems to be a decent hands first WR
Bill Barnwell (6:26 PM)
I would assume there are pudding-related red flags that are coming up with regards to his makeup.
Greg (CT)
Why is Graham Harrell so looked over? And what do you think is going on in Cleveland?
Bill Barnwell (6:29 PM)
Harrell, honestly, doesn't have the pedigree of an NFL quarterback. He's accurate, but he doesn't have a big arm and he's playing a totally different game in college. Maybe he'd be successful as a pro quarterback, but NFL coaches aren't inclined to take on such a project. I think Cleveland's just hoping all of this blows over, which I think is the right move. Rogers and Edwards aren't players you want to get rid of.
Adam (Washington)
how are the steelers doing in the draft? Why aren't they taking a bruising back to compliment Willie Parker?
Bill Barnwell (6:30 PM)
Bruising backs aren't that important. And it's not complimenting Parker -- it's complementing Mendenhall. I would bet that he ends up with more carries than Parker next year.
Matt (Seattle)
Who are the seahawks going to get to replace Leroy Hill now that they have taken the franchise tag off of him?
Bill Barnwell (6:31 PM)
They'll probably cycle through internal options, with Curry taking over the Peterson role that Hill was going to handle. Honestly, I'd figure that absent a big-money offer, Hill will return to Seattle on a one-year deal, anyway.
Daryl (Bay City)
I think the Lions did good wih there picks. Where do you see us finishing at this year?
Bill Barnwell (6:32 PM)
4-12, 5-11 or so. The thing about the Falcons and the Dolphins' turnaround is that those were two of the three or four healthiest teams in football last year. That's not likely to recur, and it's not likely to happen to the Lions.
JJ (BOSTON)
WOULD YOU TAKE A GUY THAT PLAYS BASEBALL LIKE ANDREW MEANS?
Bill Barnwell (6:33 PM)
Depends on how good Andrew Means is at baseball. Seriously, the Drew Henson/Jeff Samardizja-style guys tend to fail at both sports.
Dustin (Lawrence, KS)
How do you feel about Pioli's first draft with the Chiefs?
Bill Barnwell (6:34 PM)
Not really surprising. I was saying a month ago they were going to take a defensive linemen, but I was thinking Raji instead of Jackson. I think he's focusing on the important things and has added a few nice parts.
Jerod Mayo (Foxboro)
Why do you think my team passed up Maualuga and Laurinitis with the 34th? Wouldnt that be the best [or BEAST] young ILB duo ever? Also, why do you think theres hesitation on taking Beckwith, any chance my pats take him with a seventh?
Bill Barnwell (6:36 PM)
Maualaga and Laurinaitis (will get that spelling down eventually) don't profile as great middle linebackers at the pro level. Their relative lack of athleticism gets covered up by the dominance they have in front of them. Not the case at the pro level, and you see teams respond to that. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats take a flyer on Beckwith, whether it be in the seventh round or as a UFA.
devin (boise, ID)
do you think ian johnson will get drafted
Bill Barnwell (6:37 PM)
Very surprised he hasn't been. Think he has a lot to offer a team as a third running back and special teams guy. He'll catch on somewhere.
Symon Phoenix (Arizona)
Nobody answered my question about Ricky Jean-Francois slipping, He was supposed to be a 2 when the process started
Bill Barnwell (6:38 PM)
Makeup issues go a long way. Teams don't want to add headaches unless they're T.O.-level talents.
Joel (Johnston, RI)
Graham Harrell was a Heisman Trophy candidate last year. Please explain to me why he hasn't been drafted yet. I've seen both HArrell and Freeman play more than once, and HArrell seemed like the better QB to me...
Bill Barnwell (6:39 PM)
Look at the history of Heisman Trophy winners, let alone candidates. College hardware has little to do with pro success.
Ryan (Austin)
I am a UT Alum. With that said I am really pissed that no one has picked Quan Cosby, yet. I see him as the next Eddie Royal. I mean have none of these guys ever seen him play? Some of these WR's going before him leave me scratching my head. Its like they would rather have "potential" over proven stuff. I am so confused?
Bill Barnwell (6:42 PM)
It's not necessarily potential over proven stuff, Ryan -- it's a matter of understanding what a player can do at the pro level. Just because a player could do something at the college level does not necessarily mean that he's able to transfer that skill to the NFL. In this case, Cosby is under 5'9" and slow. He's got good hands, but if you can't get separation from corners, you can't catch passes. Cosby's athleticism may have been enough for him to get separation at the college level, but what his drop is saying is that scouts don't think he'd be able to get separation or contribute on special teams as a professional.
Matt (Pennsylvania)
I can't believe Jordan Norwood (PSU) is still on the board. His hands are AMAZING. I figured with him showing them off at the skills challenge he would be a sure lock.
Bill Barnwell (6:44 PM)
Harold Miner was great in the dunk challenge, too... Ignoring the question of whether Norwood's hands are actually that great, he's another undersized guy who can't run routes. If you want to make it in the NFL as an undersized guy, you have to be able to run routes better than taller guys and have better hands. Do you think Wes Welker would be in the league if he was sloppy in and out of cuts?
Collin (NC)
Ravens drafting a running back? Do they really neccessarily even need to work on their running game right now?
Bill Barnwell (6:45 PM)
It's not like the guys getting drafted right now are going to come in and pick up significant playing time. These are guys who might get a chance on special teams or a spot on the practice squad.
Mike (Detroit)
With Seattle drafting Curry and releasing there franchise tag on Leroy Hill, do you see the Lions going after him?
Bill Barnwell (6:45 PM)
Doubt that's where they want to invest their money. That'd be a lot to spend on three linebackers (Sims, Peterson, and Hill).
Phil (Detroit)
The lions seem to be really addressing needs here late in the draft. Are these good picks?
Bill Barnwell (6:46 PM)
I know this is a mean thing to say, but they sorta need everything.
Clinton (Kansas City)
Should the chiefs draft Jeff Worlfort due to the need of a consistent kicker? Wolfort was really consistent throughout the season
Bill Barnwell (6:47 PM)
Kickers have literally no consistency year-to-year in field goal percentage. There's no year-to-year correlation. You're better off drafting kickers for their ability to kickoff -- which is very consistent from year-to-year -- and tolerating guys' accuracy issues.
Mark (Ohio)
What are the odds of Mount Union's Nate Kmic being drafted? I know he is a small kid from a small school but he has rediculous stats. 8074 career rushin yards Most TDs in a Career - 130 - Most Rushing TDs in a Career - 125 - Most Points Scored in a Career - 780 -Most TDs in a Season - 44 -Most Points in a Season- 264 - Most Yards Rushing Season -2,790 All NCAA records for all divisions and as for his size here are a few guys with the same height or smaller Darren Sproles, Steve Slaton, DeAngelo Williams, Brian Westbrook, Maurice Jones-Drew, Warrick Dunn Last time I checked these guys weren't too bad
Bill Barnwell (6:49 PM)
He has ridiculous stats, sure, but they're at a lower level and don't mean anything in the pros. Those guys are small, but they all have great athleticism. Your list is a red herring; they don't succeed because they're that small, they succeed in spite of their height.
matt (charlotte)
with the draft almost over, what do you see happening with marvin harrison and/or plaxico burress? i feel my panthers really need a reciever to complement steve smith since moose is getting old.
Bill Barnwell (6:50 PM)
I figure Harrison retires. He doesn't need the league, and he's breaking down. Burress may very well be in jail next year, which makes it hard to complement Smith. I could see them going for Eric Parker, who's potentially coming back after missing nearly two years.
Ron (Daytona)
More and more NFL teams are tinkering with the "wildcat" formation, so when will one have the guts to go full spread? Why wouldn't it work?
Bill Barnwell (6:51 PM)
It would take a nothing-to-lose scenario like the Chiefs and the pistol last year, but the reason I figure they don't go full spread is because NFL linebackers would be able to bust through the larger-than-normal gaps between offensive linemen too fast.
Karson (seattle)
Who do you think Seattle will draft? They still need Offensive linemen
Bill Barnwell (6:53 PM)
If they still need offensive linemen, honestly, drafting one in the seventh round isn't going to change anything. Now, you pick for players who are raw and you might be able to develop, or guys who maybe you hit on once out of every 15 times. The only seventh rounders who made an impact last year were Peyton Hillis, Jamey Richard, and Chris Horton. That's three out of like 40+.
steve (boston)
patriots are wasting picks on non needs... frustrating,, they miss pioli
Bill Barnwell (6:54 PM)
Steve, how many seventh round picks have made the Patriots' roster and contributed in the past?
Ryan (Austin)
2010 Top 5 picks, who do you like and who should we keep in eye on this college season?
Bill Barnwell (6:55 PM)
ABSOLUTELY no idea, and it's silly to project that far ahead. Take a look at mock drafts for this year's draft from a year ago -- you'll see stuff like Fili Moala and Duke Robinson going in the top five.
Matt (New Orleans)
What in the world were the Saints thinking with giving up half of their draft for a punter!? And, do you think they will trade back in, and if so for what, and what will they use to trade?
Bill Barnwell (6:56 PM)
Trading up for a punter who -- and you might remember the saga of Taylor Mehlhaff -- probably won't even MAKE THE ROSTER is an astounding usage of assets.
Brandon (Stone Mountain, GA)
How do you like Atlanta's picks this year? They have added a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball. If they can find another OLB I think they are the team to beat in the NFC. The Falcons' offense will be deadly.
Bill Barnwell (6:57 PM)
Like Peria Jerry and William Moore a lot, but don't see them as the team to beat. That offense is great, but it didn't suffer any injuries last year -- literally only Sam Baker went down. That's going to change -- Turner profiles as a huge injury risk, for one.
Jack (Pittsburgh)
What are the Steelers thinking with these selections?
Bill Barnwell (6:59 PM)
You really want to question the Steelers' ability to pick players in the draft? Suffice to say, their strategy has worked well for about 30 years. They deserve the benefit of the doubt.
todd boeckmann (ohio)
bill, am i going to be drafted this year?
Bill Barnwell (7:00 PM)
Don't expect you to. Would figure you might end up as a UFA somewhere, but in all candidness, I believe Boeckman's career path ends somewhere around Ohio State radio color commentator.
Shawn (Atlanta)
Every year Atlanta makes picks that I initially find mediocre to disappointing, yet somehow, we manage to find some real diamonds in the rough. Any chance that could be the case again this year for Atlanta?
Bill Barnwell (7:01 PM)
I actually like the Falcons' draft a lot. If they could just get Jamaal Anderson going...
Louis (Memphis)
Do you see Robert Ayers making the same impact for Denver as Mayo did for the patriots last year.
Bill Barnwell (7:02 PM)
You could not possibly have chosen two players more dramatically different, to be honest. I don't think they're in the same stratosphere.
melissa (Michigan)
Bill, what do you think about the lions draft thus far and what grade would you give them
Bill Barnwell (7:02 PM)
C+. They got the first overall pick wrong and everything else right. I love Louis Delmas -- he's the Finnegan for Jim Schwartz's system, setting the tone.
Logan (MD)
Bill, in your opinion, which team has had the worst draft?
Bill Barnwell (7:03 PM)
Raiders, a huge gap, then the Broncos. And then another huge gap, and then everyone else.
Zach (Michigan)
Why have quarterbacks like Brian Hoyer slipped so far in the draft? Do you think any more QBs will go, or have the teams that needed to address that position already done so?
Bill Barnwell (7:04 PM)
There's only 90 or so spots for quarterbacks in the league. Most of them are already full. Quarterbacks don't play on special teams and they can't play anywhere else, so unless you're good enough to get chosen in the early rounds, chances are that you're not worth taking later on.
Cameron (IN)
What about Marcus Thigpen from Indiana? He had a forty time in the 4.3's.
Bill Barnwell (7:07 PM)
I hear 4.46, and that was at his Pro Day. Unless a 40-yard dash happened at the Combine, it didn't happen. The method of timing is totally different. We have no idea what track the 40 came on. You're allowed to wear totally different shoes and attire. The reason the 40-yard dash works is because everyone does it under the same conditions. Otherwise, it's like comparing a SAT grade from 2009 to one from 1983. The context is totally different.
Austin (Austin)
Does it make better financial sense to hope against getting drafted at this point and hope to sign as a free agent?
Bill Barnwell (7:07 PM)
Your seventh round contract is nicer, but you might end up in a better situation. I think it's about a push.
John (Ohio)
Why have no veteran nfl players been traded during the draft?
Bill Barnwell (7:08 PM)
Ellis Hobbs...
Vinny E (CA)
do you guys think crosby will be taken?
Bill Barnwell (7:08 PM)
Sidney? Nah, he's a whiner.
Mike (Belvidere, IL)
Jets/Browns swapped a few players.
Bill Barnwell (7:08 PM)
Them too.
Ty (San Francisco, CA)
Bill, your thoughts on the Niners draft?
Bill Barnwell (7:09 PM)
Thought they and the Seahawks were 1-2 for best draft of the weekend. Maybe their players bust, but from what we know RIGHT NOW, getting the second-best player in the draft and a future first round pick with their top two picks is a great haul.
Jason (Miami)
Bill, why do you think matt stafford was the wrong pick for the lions?
Bill Barnwell (7:10 PM)
Simply put, guys with his pedigree (completion percentage and college games started) don't succeed at the NFL level. He was worse in the same system than David Greene. He has a big arm, yes, but it takes more than a big arm to succeed. Maybe he'll be a successful pick. For $40 million guaranteed, you don't do maybes.
JERRY (SACRAMENTO)
SO EVERYONE THAT IS NOT PICKED TODAY, DO THEY JUST TRY AND PUT THEMSELVES ON THE MARKET?
Bill Barnwell (7:11 PM)
Well, their agents do. The best guys will get calls right now, actually.
Jacob (Peoria)
BIll whats your take on Alex Boone he is a big kid i believe he is 6"8 325 lbs and a solid tackle. Do you think he will get drafted?
Bill Barnwell (7:12 PM)
Big guy, not really very agile, makeup issues. Not the best move to get arrested for public drunkenness two months before the draft. Probably bulks up and tries to become a guard.
Martin (San Jose)
Do you see a Marques Colston in this 7th round?
Bill Barnwell (7:13 PM)
No -- that's the beauty of a Marques Colston. If I or anyone else saw him, he wouldn't be a seventh-round pick. Scouts don't always get it right, but rarely do guys that good fall that far.
Jappy (Chicago)
Mr. Barnwell, The Bears selected several players in the later rounds that were projected to go higher (D. J. Moore, Jarron Gilbert, Marcus Freeman). Do you believe overall they got good values or probale busts?
Bill Barnwell (7:14 PM)
Those sort of guys don't usually end up amounting to much -- they fall for a reason. Quentin Moses comes to mind.
Steven (WI)
How many games will Donald Brown start? Over/under 9?
Bill Barnwell (7:15 PM)
Way under.
Rock (Cherry Hill, NJ)
Can you please explain why the Bills insist on taking so many corners? Three this year, on a team full of needs!
Bill Barnwell (7:16 PM)
Would the guys they could've drafted have filled those needs? Probably not.
Dan (Bay City, MI)
I was at the Lion's Draft Party and there was quite a 'Boo' when the Lions chose Delmas over Maualuga. I was not among them but I really liked Rey too. Did the Lion's make the correct choice, in your opinion?
Bill Barnwell (7:16 PM)
That's an absolute slam-dunk move on the Lions' part, to be honest.
Andrew (Philly)
Who do you see having the most immediate impact of the Eagles top three picks: Jeremy Maclin, LeSean McCoy, or Cornelius Ingram?
Bill Barnwell (7:19 PM)
I'd figure McCoy; if he's a good enough blocker, he probably gets enough PT for 100 carries or so this year. I was very surprised they went for Maclin and Ingram instead of Pettigrew and more depth on the line.
logan (ne)
who do you see as the next rookies of the year?
Bill Barnwell (7:19 PM)
Knowshon Moreno and Aaron Curry.
Brad (MI)
How many games will Mathew Stafford start?
Bill Barnwell (7:20 PM)
3.
slim (mich)
what impact do you think javon ringer will have at tennessee
Bill Barnwell (7:21 PM)
Don't think much at all. Didn't even profile as a great back at the college level, just one who got overworked.
Tim (Harrisonburg, va)
Do u think brian orakpo will be a boom or bust given that he has the added bonus of lining up next to haynesworth on the line
Bill Barnwell (7:22 PM)
I like Orakpo. I think maybe he starts half the year, ends up with 4-6 sacks.
Carey (Tyler)
Ringer was a great back at college
Bill Barnwell (7:22 PM)
Not really. He was a good back who got the ball a lot. There's a difference.
mark (seattle)
What is the square root of 256?
Bill Barnwell (7:22 PM)
16, right?
Barzin (San Francisco)
What sort of season do you expect from Michael Crabtree
Bill Barnwell (7:23 PM)
We wrote an article on this for ESPN Insider...I would figure something like 50-800-6. Rookie wide receivers just don't blow up all that frequently, and Crabtree still has to work on his route-running and some aspects of his game that he didn't need to worry about in school.
USAF MSgt (Minot AFB, ND)
You think Orapko will only start "half the year"? Daniels and Wynn are ancient. Orakpo should be starting from the get go, or am I crazy?
Bill Barnwell (7:24 PM)
Just because the other guys aren't great options doesn't mean that Orakpo should start from the beginning. He needs to learn the playbook, for one.
Mark (Houston, TX)
WHat's your take on the Texans draft, I think we missed out on some pretty decent backs in the draft.
Bill Barnwell (7:25 PM)
If you'd asked me this question last year, would you have believed that Steve Slaton would be your starter heading into this year? Probably not. The Texans follow the Broncos' philosophy of plugging in later-round backs who do one-cut well and building around the line. Well, the old Broncos, at least.
John (Chicopee, MA)
Was this draft influenced by the economics of some teams as many traded right out of the 1st round
Bill Barnwell (7:26 PM)
I wonder if we know the same people in Chicopee. Absolutely, I think it's safe to assume that teams would rather go bust on a second-round pick than a first-round pick and adjusted their calculations accordingly.
Paul (Gainesville,FL)
Hey Bill, How would you grade the fina??s class and do you think it was a mistake to draft Pat White so early?
Bill Barnwell (7:27 PM)
Liked Vontae Davis. Don't think a lot of Pat White's chances -- converted quarterbacks just don't work well in the NFL. The best case scenario is Antwaan Randle El, which isn't a great ceiling to have.
brant (San Jose)
If you draft a Rookie Of The Year but everyone else you draft blows up, is that still a good draft?
Bill Barnwell (7:28 PM)
I don't think so, to be honest. Means that you have to spend five more draft picks taking care of those busts.
Blake ((Charlotte, NC))
Hey Bill, do you see Tyson Jackson starting from game one because of KC's defensive needs?
Bill Barnwell (7:29 PM)
Absolutely. He's NFL-ready.
Sam (New York)
The Jets didn't appoint their WR needs in the draft, does this look like the Jets are going to look for a big time WR in free agency or a trade for B. Edwards or A. Boldin?
Bill Barnwell (7:30 PM)
There are no big time wide receivers in free agency, it happened about two months ago. What do they have to trade for Edwards or Boldin?
Bill Barnwell (7:30 PM)
Mr. Irrelevant coming up! Any guesses?
Mike (Cali)
Heyward-Bey; Boom, Bust, Solid #2 Receiver?
Bill Barnwell (7:34 PM)
An absolute bust. What the Raiders are doing to a $500 million asset is downright embarrassing.
Bill Barnwell (7:35 PM)
And it's Ryan Succop! Congratulations to the South Carolina kicker. I'll go about ten minutes more, and then we'll wrap this up.
Jeremy (New York)
Are you surprised Ian Johnson didn't get drafted? Could it be that despite their success Boise St still doesn't get NFL respect?
Bill Barnwell (7:36 PM)
I assure you that if teams thought Johnson was a great player, they wouldn't care what school he came from. Johnson will catch on as one of the higher-rated UFAs out there with significant special teams potential.
chris (albuquerque)
Hey Bill, do you have someone screening the chat messages that you receive?
Bill Barnwell (7:37 PM)
No, I pick them out myself. And get to read...well, at least most of them. There's 350,000+ questions in the queue right now, just FYI.
bryan (boston)
how do more players get drafted from ap christian than fsu?
Bill Barnwell (7:38 PM)
FSU's program has seen better days. Then again, 25 years ago, that wouldn't have been much of a surprise, either.
Sam (IN)
Did Cleveland Browns pick succesffully with Alex Mack?
Bill Barnwell (7:39 PM)
I like Mack a lot. I think he profiles as a potential Pro Bowl center, although it's ridiculous when you think about the center talent the Browns have gone through over the last seven years or so.
Caleb (NE)
how do you think the COWBOYS did in this draft better or worst then the raiders
Bill Barnwell (7:39 PM)
A team that passed on all their picks would have done better than the Raiders.
Brett (NJ)
If Sanchez had stayed at USC for his senior year, next year with the likes of McCoy, Bradford, Teabow, etc would he have been a first or even second round pick?
Bill Barnwell (7:40 PM)
Impossible to say. If he had a great year, he might have gone first overall; had he struggled, he might have suffered the same fate that, say, Brian Brohm did. Such is life when you give scouts another year of film on you.
chris (Arizona)
What do u think about the Raiders pick of Michael Mitchell? Kiper hated it bu there was a report today that the Bears were going to take him later that round
Bill Barnwell (7:41 PM)
It would have been a stupid pick regardless of whether the Browns or the Raiders chose him. Picking guys for their Pro Day 40 time is one of the stupidest decisions a team can make.
Marshall Mozena (Ohio)
Who do you think will be the number one draft pick next year?
Bill Barnwell (7:42 PM)
In September 2008, I said Matthew Stafford would be the first overall pick (albeit by the Chiefs). This year, I'm not so confident about any one player.
Drew (Charlotte)
Do you think the Panthers shored up their O-line depth problems by getting Duke Robinson?
Bill Barnwell (7:42 PM)
Steal of the draft, I thought.
Nick (Petaluma, CA)
Bill, who do you think is going to win the NFC WEST next season?
Bill Barnwell (7:43 PM)
Seahawks. 10-6.
Paul (O-town)
I know the defense was what killed them last year, but was the Packers' decision to go all-defense a wise one this year?
Bill Barnwell (7:43 PM)
Think they had to when you consider their scheme change and the holes it left.
David (GA)
How about the Vikings first two rounds? They get a home-run threat in Harvin and a potential starting right tackle. Does this make them a team to contend with in the NFL, even with T-Jax/Sage?
Bill Barnwell (7:45 PM)
Not in the slightest. Ignoring the impossibly high failure rate of SEC WRs at the NFL level -- and the failure rate of Florida receivers in general -- Harvin is exactly the same sort of receiver that Bernard Berrian is. Except for the fact that he also can't stop smoking weed days before the Combine. They needed a possession receiver like Brian Robiskie far more than they needed Harvin.

What is up with Larry English in the first round? Do you see him in the Pro Bowl?
Bill Barnwell (7:45 PM)

Alright, everyone. I need to put together some content for Football Outsiders for Monday -- thanks for your questions, and we'll see you all closer to training camp. Until then, check out our weekly content for ESPN Insider!
