AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Good morning gang. Let's get started shall we? Who's on first?
Not that I'd want to get rid of him, but I can pretty much ask for anyone not named Pujols in exchange for Greinke, right?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
He is never going to have as much trade value as he does right now. As soon as he has one "so-so" outing, people are going to get cold feet. Again, not saying you need to get rid of him, but you may be able to get a Lincecum/Youkilis combo or some such 2-for-1 deal. That's not too shabby.
Mark (Boston, MA)
Trying to deal an OF- What kind of starter can I expect for Vernon Wells?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I think you can name your price. He's way up the charts right now and not too many OF are going to seem "better" by comparison.
AJ, I just traded Dan Haren (while he's hot) and Swisher (before he cools down) for Carlos Beltran. Was that a good trade or what?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
What. I think Beltran has been one of the least valuable hitters so far this year, given how high his average was. Haren for Beltran straight up isn't something I would have done, let alone adding in Swisher.
Bill (Buffalo, NY)
Who ends up with the better season, Ortiz, DLee, or Laroche?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Laroche. I'm not a total believer in him, but moreso than the other two right now.
Would Ibanez head your list of "sell high" guys? Who else is on that list?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Grady, Granderson, Abreu and Fowler come to mind off the top of my head for hitters. I actually like Ibanez to continue to do well.
why would you say Beltran has been one of the least valuable hitters so far? He's doing great!
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
His average is great... where's the power? Where's the speed? Beltran at .400 or so should be contributing far more than he has - and watching him on the bases, he looks lost.
Why is Granderson a sell high? He has proved that he's 30/30 material, and seems to be on pace for a career high in HR's. Why all the hate towards Granderson from the ESPN crew?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
First of all, how has he "proved" he's 30-30 material without having ever reached 30 in either category? Second, sell high does not = hate. I think his *pace* slows down.
do you like jose guillen in the middle of the KC lineup this year? who would you rather have as a 4th OF, guillen or upton?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I'd rather have Justin at this point, but if you're talking BJ, then I'd go with Guillen.
Would trading Grady for David Wright be a good move in a vacuum?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
No, not in a vaccum, but in a real life situation, yes. Wright is a far better option at 3B going forward relatively speaking than Grady is at OF.
I should feel no qualms at all for sitting Brett Myers tonight against the Cards, right?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Or against anyone, for that matter.
Mike (Rochester, NY)
On a daily basis I have the hard choice of who should be played in my Util spot. Who is the better all around hitter, Choo or Thome?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Choo. And given the fact that Thome may need days off at a moments notice, doubly Choo.
What do you think about me trading furcal and aramis for rollins and beltre in a deep head to head league?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
I think the deal is relatively even, and which side you lean to goes to your own personally belief in whether or not J-Roll turns it on big time or not. I have my doubts, but still lean slightly to that side of the deal.
So is Greinke a sell-high? i.e., does his pace slow down (well, I guess it has to, but you catch my drift). Along these lines, Greinke for Wright, straight up?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Is he finishing the year 25-0 with a 0.50 ERA. Not likely. Is 20-4 with a 2.50 ERA reasonable to expect? At this point, sure. But since he's already earned you 6-0, 0.40 - that means from this point forward, he;s 14-4, with say a 3.30 ERA. That's still great to have, but if you can deal for a top-10 hitter or a pitcher who gets you even 12-5, 3.50 ERA and a top-40 hitter, you're ahead of the game.
Bob (Madison, WI)
I am being offered Jose Reyes and Carlos Quentin for Ian Kinsler. I have to take this deal right?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Well, unless there's an actual gun to your head, no you don't HAVE TO take the deal. You do have free will, right? I think I'd stand pat with Kinsler myself, but certainly CQ and Reyes are the right combo of players to make it a fair deal, if all play up to top level.
Russell Martin (LA)
What is my deal? When am I going to produce?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Not sure I'd wait around to find out from the C position. I'm cutting him loose at this point and letting somebody else worry about it.
Tom (Princeton, NJ)
So I see you like Ibanez for the rest of the year, but you have to pull the trigger and send him for Cole Hamels in a 10team NL-only Roto league, right?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I wouldn't. I'm concerned about Cole and while I'm not cutting him if I own him, I'm not taking him on my roster right now, at least not at top price.
Show some love for the ladies!! Trade Mr. Matt LaPorta and Adam Wainwright for Chad Billingsley?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Certainly not in a keeper league, and I don't think the difference between Chad and Adam is huge enough to add a throw-in on that deal in a one-and-done league either.
What about me?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
What about you? You're bound to do better... but right now, it's not pretty.
Ray St. Louis Mo.
Is Brandon Phillips over rated?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
He's not in my Top-100 hitters right now, so from my point of view - that's where I rate him. If you think that's too high, then yes. If not, then no.
Sizemore's ma (Cleveland, OH)
How is Grady a sell high? Granted, you may say "everyone is a sell high" - but why would you lump him with those other schmoo's earlier?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Sell highs don't have to be shape-shifting cartoon characters. They can have tons of talent. It's all about perception and what you can get out of them. Grady's HR/FB rate is ridiculously high, and he's not hitting all that many fly balls this season compared to past seasons. To me, that warns of a drop in power output... and a sell high.
You're adivising to cut Russell Martin?? I seem to remember you being the guy preaching patience throughout early April chats. And now all of a sudden you're saying to cut guys like Russell Martin, and sell high on Grady Sizemore and Beltran. Please explain yourself.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Mike, when asked "Who are some sell high options right now?" which answer would you prefer. "Nobody. Be patient with everyone." or a list of some names? Plus, one can be patient and still take advantage of a trade opportunity they like. As for Martin, in a one catcher league, I wouldn't necessarily expectr him to turn it around and if I can be getting stats from other sources, I'll make a move. If I can bench him, that's obviously better than cutting him, but I think it will be awhile before he comes around.
Sylar aka Spock (Hollywood)
Can I shape shift into C Young (OF) and turn his season around, or is he done?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
I wish you would, because right now I see Delwyn as having more value.
Jay (Fort Myers)
I've just read your first 10 questions and answers so far, and I have to say, it's as if you're playing backwards day. Every answer you gave is completely opposite conventional critical thinking. They're all nutty comments in my opinion, but you'd rather Justin over BJ? You've just proven your worth to me. I guess all you're good for is looking like Bill Paxton's creepy brother on Big Love.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Translation: "I don't agree with you, and I do agree with whatever 'everybody says'. Having a different opinion makes clearly makes you wrong because 'those other experts' are always right." So, I should expect no further comments from you Jay? You'll be leaving my chats?
Grady Sizemore (Cleveland)
Excuse me Mr. Mass, I hit 33 homers, and stole 38 bags last season... I believe that qualiifies as being a 30-30 guy, no? I also swiped 33 the year before.
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Yes, but the previous question was about Granderson. I know all those G-names can get confusing... but try to keep up! Oh dear! Sarcasm! Shocking behavior! Call the thought police!
Can you take a question from someone who WANTS your advice! Got offered Mariano Rivera for Adam Lind (who is my UTIL).Pull the trigger and use Francoeur or Theriot as UTIL?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
I think Lind is a solid performer, but if you need saves, Theriot can do the job just as well.
AJ, keep doing what your doing man. I think Jay's just upset because he's been watching "Big Love" for some reason??
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Yeah, that Chloe Sevigny creeps me out...
AJ, youre getting a lot of grief today, ignore it. Is Bay a sell high guy, or do you expect his season to continue as is?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
I think he's a sell high candidate, probably due to slip back to the pack a bit. And as for the grief, it is far more amusing than annoying, trust me... otherwise, I wouldn't post any of them.
Do you think Cantu is a sell high guy?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that I do think he's due for a bit of a letdown. But no, in the sense that I don't think his name has the cache of some other sell high candidates. You can't sell a guy like Cantu high when most owners don't recognize his true value to begin with.
Aesop Rock (NY Electric)
Commish Corner: What's the best way to do a FAAB if only people in the league are in charge? Is there too big a conflict of interest when commish gets the bids? Online ESPN league, members only know each other online.
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
It is a conflict, but the best remedy is to have the Commish submit his bid to somebody else in the league each week prior to the deadline - that person (who will rotate each week) will also have a deadline a day early, and will receive the Commish's bid after sending his in.
Who are you and what have you done with Jason Grey?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Jason was kind enough to fill in for me last week while I was en route from Bristol. This is my usual chat time.
Is Alberto Callaspo this year's Alexi Ramirez?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Love Callaspo, and think he's one of the biggest must-grabs out there right now.
Dallas Braden, thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
To be honest, I haven't really seen him pitch yet, but based solely on the stats, I would place him in the No. 4 starter range for fantasy.
Take your pick the rest of the way: Andre Ethier or Matt Kemp?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Both are top-50 hitters, but I'd lean Andre's way... Wait? Is that what everyone is saying? If so, reverse it. ; )
Eddie Money (Los Angeles)
'Two Tickets To Paradise' or 'Shakin'?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
I prefer "Take Me Home Tonight" myself, just like Ronnie sang.
You alluded to must grabs with the Callaspo response. Who are some other "must-grabs" for you?? Thanks AJ!
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Assuming they're waiver wire fodder... Loney, Downs, K. Suzuki come to mind.
You ARE allowed to think the same way as others in some situations. Its ok...
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
I agree with you. Wait... is that right? Head hurts...
With no power or speed, how is Callaspo a must grab?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
96 percent contact rate, almost as many doubles as singles and an average that could stay at .320 for the season. I'd take that from a MI slot over much of what's put there.
You really are the most annoying chatter out there. congrats.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Then my work here is done. We'll be back to annoy the world again on Thursday, and there's another chat at 3pm today... Thanks for all the Q's and we'll see you the next time on Villa Allegre!
