Reggie Rankin (2:03 PM)
What's up hoop fans? The signing period is in full force and with Kentucky landing a top point guard let's see how the dominoes fall. Let's get right to it.
Ryan (Chicago, IL)
What do you think of Mizzou's two most recent committments Underwood and Stone?
Reggie Rankin (2:04 PM)
Thanks Ryan. Missouri addressed they're needs by signing size and athletic ability. Both can run, score in transition and rebound on both ends and should be a great fit for the up-tempo system of the Tigers.
jtr2122 (KY)
Do you see Calipari getting one of the top 3 recruiting classes every year?
Reggie Rankin (2:06 PM)
You can already see the impact Calipari has had in Lexington. I wouldn't bet against him consistently landing Top 10 classes. He will go after McDonald's all-americans year after year and will land his share.
Mark, Orlando
I have been extremely impressed with Kyrie Irving. He seems to be the number one priority for a number of programs. Where do you think he ends up?
Reggie Rankin (2:07 PM)
Mark, I've been equally as impressed with Irving. He's a high level point guard and I hear that Indiana has made him a priority along with several Big East schools and also Duke possibly UNC.
Nick Austin Texas
hey reggie with avery bradley being the number one player what will that mean to texas and what will they be ranked with the class they rolled in
Reggie Rankin (2:09 PM)
Thanks Nick. It's proof that the Longhorns staff does a great job evaluating. Bradley has been the most consistent player in the class on both ends of the floor. They're class rank won't change much because he was a high level to begin with, but landing the No. 1 player doesn't hurt when you're talking to future recruits.
Ryan (Indianapolis, IN)
With Arizona's three 2009 ESPN100 committments, a likely return of Nic Wise, and a decent supporting cast (Horne, Fogg, and Jacobsen), can Arizona make some noise in a weaker Pac-10 conference this year and perhaps make the tournament? They went from having an "IU-esque" year to actually having a solid squad. Sean Miller is the Man!
Reggie Rankin (2:11 PM)
Ryan, I think this is very possible. I think Sean Miller has made huge strides recruiting-wise in a short period of time. Them making a lot of noise in the Pac-10 and gaining a tourney bid is highly likely. He's done a great job of turning a tough situation around more quickly than people probably anticipated.
jtr2122 (KY)
Who do you see committing to Kentucky for 2010?
Reggie Rankin (2:13 PM)
They may still recruit Dominique Ferguson but I'd expect them to make a run at Harrison Barnes. Also, look for Roscoe Smith and Dayton-product Adreian Payne to check out UK.
Nick, Ohio
Hey Reggie, what is going on with Carolina's 09 recruiting? Are they done? I know they have an excellent (and arguably the best) class coming in, but are they making a serious play for John Wall? If not, are they looking at other point guards who can lead the team next year or at least provide depth behind Larry Drew II?
Reggie Rankin (2:14 PM)
Nick, I think they'll continue to pursue Wall but they'll rely on Drew and incoming combo-guard Dexter Strickland. In the 2010 class they have a true PG Kendall Marshall coming in, who in my opinion is the best passer in his class.
Houston, Indianapolis In
I noticed Purdue got a center from La Porte In. during the April signing period. They NEED size. A European kid, Sandi Marcius, with decent numbers that I have not seen on any recruiting board. Any ideas on upside?
Reggie Rankin (2:17 PM)
I visited with La Lumiere head coach Delray Brooks recently and Marcius has tremendous size and athletic ability. He can score in the lane and can screen and flash. He'll be a great fit for the motion offense. He'll also clog up the lane defensively in Purdue's pressure man-to-man defense.
Brandon (KY)
Do you see Calipari still trying to get Wall even though he signed Bledsoe, or is he done recruiting for the 2009 class?
Reggie Rankin (2:18 PM)
Brandon, I definitely don't think Calipari has completed his '09 class and would certainly not turn down a commitment from Wall.
Andrew, Reno, NV
Do you know of the latest info on Lance Stephenson? Is it solely Memphis and Arizona? Who has the edge?
Reggie Rankin (2:22 PM)
Andrew, it seems that St. John's and Maryland are out and Memphis and Arizona are in. It's not worth speculating where he'll end up because it seems to change every few days.
Tarr (Orlando)
Can you comment on Wake Forest's class this year as well as next year? With Aminu and hopefully Teague returning, the Demon Deacons could be Final 4 contenders.
Reggie Rankin (2:25 PM)
Thanks Tarr. Wake has a solid class coming in. They've addressed needs on the perimeter with Stewart, who is a great athlete and a finisher in transition. C.J. Harris has a good bball IQ. He makes good decisions and will fit their fast break style. The European kid Sommerfeldt has great range and will stretch the defense and open up lanes. Expect big things from the Deacons next year.
Cat Fan In Ohio (Sandusky, OH)
Does Eric Bledsoe's commitment move Kentucky to the top recruiting class?
Reggie Rankin (2:27 PM)
Cat Fan, it certainly moves them up but it's still not as good as Villanova's or UNC's. But Bledsoe is a great get for this late in the game.
brett (the ville) [via mobile]
With louisville losing jeremy tyler, what are the chances of getting melo, or smith? thanks
Reggie Rankin (2:29 PM)
Brett, I think that the Cards will put the fullcourt press on Melo and Smith to make up for the loss to Tyler. They're both high level post players that would make the loss much easier to deal with. Both are true centers and immediate impact post players at the high-major level.
Croom (Philadelphia)
Hey Reggie, what do you think Duke's chances are of landing an elite point guard in either Knight or Irving?
Reggie Rankin (2:32 PM)
Well, Croom, they are gonna need an elite PG. With playing time at an elite program and with Coach K, they should be able pursue Knight, Irving or another high-level PG and bring them to Durham.
Mike (Lexington, KY)
Did Stansbury get a steal or what in landing Sydney? Seems to have fallen right into his lap.
Reggie Rankin (2:37 PM)
Yes, Mike, that is a steal. Sidney is a skilled big man who can play inside and out and has the ability to dominate when he's motivated. He has a tendency to take plays off. There are few better, though, when he's going well.
Jim (utica,ny)
Reggie, what has syracuse been doing to help reload after losing flynn, harris, and devo
Reggie Rankin (2:41 PM)
Jim, the Orange have added a long athletic center in Riley and a pure scorer in Triche. James Southerland has great size at 6-7 for a shooter. The best of the group won't arrive until 2010 when Dion Waiters hits the campus. He's strong, physical guard who some parts of his game will remind SU fans of Pearl Washington. He's a legit Top 20 prospect.
Eric(Indy)
Will Creans Twittering land any big recruits for the Hoosiers this signing period? WHo can you see going to Bloomingon?
Reggie Rankin (2:43 PM)
Eric, i believe the Hoosiers are done for the class of 2009. They are in hot pursuit 2010's Kyrie Irving, I know that.
Lee
UCONN has been so quiet...is there anyone coming in that I should be excited about?...
Reggie Rankin (2:48 PM)
Well, Lee, the Huskies haven't been too quiet. There's plenty to get excited about in Storrs. Oriakhi is a physical and strong post who can block shots and rebound and is an underrated scorer in the post. Coombs-McDaniel is an athletic slashing small forward. Darius Smith is a tough, defensive minded point out of Chicago. Trice is a good all-around perimeter player and is a solid glue-guy. I'd say there's plenty to be excited about.
Lucia (Melrose, MA)
How does Umass' incoming class look? Does the Terrell Vinson signing put them back on the map and crack the top 25 next year?
Reggie Rankin (2:52 PM)
Lucia, they have some solid mid-major talent with good size and athletic ability coming in. With Vinson coming in it also gives them some star power. He's a legitimate high-major scorer. They should be vastly improved but Top 25 might be a reach.
Brian (Cincinnati)
Ohio State got a new coach in Jeff Boals a week ago. Can he help recruiting for OSU and perhaps help develop the big men? Any information on his story?
Reggie Rankin (2:57 PM)
Brian, Jeff Boals is a fellow Ohio U. Bobcat. He was a tough, physical player with a great bball IQ and he will pass that along to the OSU big men. Also, he will do a great job recruiting the state of Ohio as well as nationally. A home run pick by Thad Matta. He'll be a great compliment to asst. coach Alan Major.
Mike (Lexington, KY)
Will Michael Snaer eclipse what Toney Douglas has done as FSU? He seems like the real deal to me.
Reggie Rankin (3:02 PM)
Thanks Mike. Snaer will make an immediate impact at FSU but he's a different type of guard than Douglas. Douglas was a big time scorer. Sneaer can score, but what makes him special is his defensive ability. Other than Avery Bradley, he's probably the next best perimeter defender that I've seen in this class.
Reggie Rankin (3:04 PM)
Thanks for the questions guys! We'll be back here next week for another round. Stick with ESPN for all your recruiting needs!
