Tag Ribary (12:59 PM)
Hey everybody. It's time for the Tuesday chat. We have an hour to go over all types of NFL subjects. Let's get started.
Jed Wilkinson: (West Lafayette, IN)
Do you think Painter will have the chance to, after 3 to 5 years of work behind Payton Manning, be the QB to step in after Manning retires? He has similar attributes and has all the intangibles that most pro-team look for in a QB with size, knowledge, and a good arm.
Tag Ribary (1:01 PM)
Hey Jed. Replacing Peyton Manning will be tough for whoever steps into that role. It's way too early to tell about Painter. Let's see him take some snaps in an NFL game before we talk about him replacing a possible hall of famer.
Trevor (Snohomish, WA)
Do the seahawks have a legitimate chance to make it back to the super bowl?
Tag Ribary (1:04 PM)
Trevor, I like what the Hawks have done so far this offseason. Making it to the Super Bowl depends on a teams ability to stay healthy. They still have some question marks in my opinion on both sides of the ball but as you know...once you make the playoffs anything can happen so I wouldn't rule them out.
Jed Wilkinson: (West Lafayette, IN)
Sticking with the Colts and their draft picks, can you see Addai being replaced by Donald Brown? Addai has been good in his first couple of seasons, but Brown seems to be a guy that can do it all in terms of his ability to be a tough runner and catching the ball out of the backfield, not to mention his toughness in picking up the blitz.
Tag Ribary (1:08 PM)
I like the Donald Brown pick because I'm a believer in a 2 back system these days. Addai did an excellent job of preparing his rookie year and picking up the blitz is a huge stepping stone for any young RB. If Brown can do the same the Colts will be scary because they will have excellent depth at the position. Now they just need to keep Moore and Mudd around.
Jeff (East Bay, CA)
It's crazy for the Jets not to give Leon Washington an extension right? If you were them, how do you handle their RB situation?
Tag Ribary (1:12 PM)
They'll have to pay either Jones or Washington in my opinion. Try to fnd some middle ground with one of them. If they can get both players done you have to give Tannenbaum credit.
Jed Wilkinson: (West Lafayette, IN)
Who do you feel is the free agent that moved to another team that can have the biggest impact and push their team to the playoffs or into the super bowl? Personally, I think Cutler but I'd like to hear your thoughts and feelings.
Tag Ribary (1:14 PM)
I'm anxious to see how Cutler does in Chicago. They need to give him some help with another WR if you ask me but it will be interesting either way. I thinkk TJ Houshmandzadeh can put up some big numbers for Seattle.
Casey (Central, MN)
Does it really overall help the Vikings performance to bring in Brett Favre? Will they be contenders for a super bowl with Favre? What do you think Favre will do?
Tag Ribary (1:17 PM)
Casey that's a tough question. I want to see him get healthy and play well but so much is depending on his health that the whole risk/reward gamble is huge. If he's healthy I believe he can still get them to the playoffs and then who knows. Re-establishing himself in that offense is really intriguing to me. Even at his his age,
NO!!!!!!! FARVE IS WASHED...HE will lessen their chances... I'd rather have David Carr before Farve...He's only in it for himself.
Tag Ribary (1:19 PM)
Thanks Brian. You're not alone in that opinion. Some people are absolutely convinced he's done. Since I don't have to make that decision we can just choose a side - ha.
Steve (Southington, CT)
Tag just curious what you think about the Gmen's receiving corps. I still think they need a legitamite #1
Tag Ribary (1:22 PM)
Steve I agree with you. I like the H. Nicks selection but I'm not sure how much of an impact he can make as a rookie. He will be a good player but if they can get a legitimate #1 or another proven playmaker, then I like their chances of getting back to the SB.
Steve, how many teams still need a legitimate #1 WR? Probably about half...
Tag Ribary (1:23 PM)
Good point. But not all those teams are in a position to get back to the Super Bowll this year.
i dont think favre loves the game as much as he said he did the day he was retiring... the only reason hes coming back is so that he can make money
Tag Ribary (1:24 PM)
I don't think it's about money for him anymore. He's made quite a bit and likely wont get a huge deal if he is to sign with Minnesota. The NFL is a hard thing to walk away from.
Steve (Southington, CT)
He has enough money...these guys just can't accept its over!!!
How much of an upgrade did MN recieve for taking Percy Harvin? Was that their best option at that point in the draft?
Tag Ribary (1:26 PM)
I like the Harvin pick but they will need to keep a close eye on him and rely on the veteran leadership in the locker room to keep him from getting out of line during the year. If they can do that, he can pay huge dividends for them as long as someone can get him the ball.
The Packers were going to pay him 25 million or something to work in the office and do PR crap, it isn't about the money.
Sean (TR NJ)
I was reading a blog from last week by Tim Grahm and the question was asked "what percent do you give the Dolphins of geting Boldin" the answer was 22% what are your thoughts?
Tag Ribary (1:30 PM)
Sounds like Boldin would love to play there but I dont get the feeling that Dolphins management is willing to give up the trade compensation and the cash needed to get that type of deal done. Arizona has put a high asking price on him, knowing that teams won't be willing to match.
Shane (Los Angeles, CA)
TR: Question & a couple comments about the Redskins. Everything Ive read/heard has the Redskins finishing last in their division. Is this more because the NFC East is so tough/good or do the Redskins need another year to be competitive? I think they spent an awful lot of money to finish last in their division, and if they do, Albert Haynesworth is NOT worth his contract...you dont pay someone that kind of money and not be a contender.
Tag Ribary (1:33 PM)
It's an extremely tough division but don't get offended by pre-season rankings. They don't mean anything. It will be interesting to see how much of a difference Haynseworth makes for the defense. It's a lot of money for one player and if he goes down due to injury - then what?
JERSEY [via mobile]
wats up tag? i was wondering about your thoughts on the eagles. do u think our offense would be better this year? and how bout are defense?
Tag Ribary (1:36 PM)
I like the Eagles moves this offseason. They drafted well and made good trades, free agent moves etc. I'm hoping nothing but the best for Jimmy Johnson and his battle with cancer because he is a big part of their defensive success.
Mike (Ewa Beach, HI)
With Dick Lebeau's schemes and the Steelers D forcing a lot of 3rd and long sitches, do you think Ziggy Hood will see the field and rush the passer/spell the starting DE's/NT? My guess is the Steelers obliterate the team record for sacks if not the league one... what is the record? '85/'86 bears? The Steelers will have the #1 D Threepeat!
Tag Ribary (1:38 PM)
I am confident Dick Lebeau knows what his defense needs and can get the most out of players. Not sure about setting sack records but as long Dick is calling the defense they will be very solid.
I see the Falcons & Saints battling it out for the division. Carolina is going to fade away. Thoughts in the NFCSouth?
Tag Ribary (1:40 PM)
Don't count John Fox out. He can flat out coach. I like the moves Atlanta has made but I have questions about their defense. If they can get better on the defensive side of the ball, they could be scary.
If Braylon Edwards isn't traded, is there a chance he actually becomes a free agent next year or would mangini tag him? Also, if he is a FA would the Bears have a chance to sign him?
Tag Ribary (1:43 PM)
He would likely get tagged so the team could get something in return if they were to trade him. Sort of like the J. Peppers situation. We'll see how that deal shakes out, but you can't just let good players walk out the door these days without getting something in return.
Tag, What do you think about the direction the Lions are headed? How did you like their draft?
Tag Ribary (1:45 PM)
I thought they should have addressed the offensive line after taking the QB. They must have have had the TE rated a lot higher than any available OL's left on the board. Time will tell. I generally don't believe in taking TE's real high.
Ken (Scottsdale, AZ)
Do you think that the Cardinals have put a high price tag on Boldin because he's a great football player and a 3-time pro bowler? They're not gonna give away a guy under contract for two more years...
Tag Ribary (1:47 PM)
You're right Ken. I would have done the same thing if I were Rod Graves. You have him at a good number so set the bar high and see if someone will meet your demands. I'm not saying it's wrong on Arizonas part.
Cyrus (San Francisco, CA)
The Niners still lack depth on the OL, a pass rushing OLB/DE and a prove WR (not to mention QB). They have two first rounders next year and lots of cap room. Julius Peppers and Plax are available. Just saying.
How bad does the Vikes acquiring Rosenfels look right now? Looks to me like Childress has no clue.
Can the Titans even come close to duplicating last year's success? They seem like a team to take a step back.
Tag Ribary (1:49 PM)
They may not win as many games during the regular season but if they make the playoffs at 9-7 or even 8-8 that's all it takes. Get hot at the right time of year.
Cyrus (San Francisco, CA)
Is there any package the Niners could put together (2 2010 first rounders plus a 2011 or something like that) that could pry Quinn and Edwards from Cleveland? There's a new Edwards rumor daily, and Cleveland brass doesn't seem to be sold on Quinn.
Tag Ribary (1:52 PM)
San Francisco should hang onto their picks in your scenario Cyrus. I wouldn't start trading away future draft pick on Brady Quinn just yet. Need to see more from him first.
Tag, What's your opinion on the direction San Fran is headed? What's your predictions as far as record goes? Thanks.
Tag Ribary (1:53 PM)
Headed in the right direction, 9-7.
hank (Steeler Fan in Texas)
The Cowboys SUCK!
Tag Ribary (1:55 PM)
Here we go. It's mid May and the hatred is coming out already.
Tag, Can San Fran be considered a dark horse? A.L.A Arizona Cardinals of last year? Thanks.
Tag Ribary (1:56 PM)
They need to get consistent QB play first and that's a huge question mark.
where does the ravens finish this season
Tag Ribary (1:59 PM)
I see Baltimore as a playoff team again this year. I have questions about the WR position but they have the leadership and toughness in that locker room to compete for a division title.
Tag Ribary (2:00 PM)
That was fun. Thanks for joining in. Have a great week.
