Hey first take just have this to say I am not a fan of kobe or prince james as hes called.I think that the officiating was horrible in all the games played by these to teams.I think they should put 3 refs on each end of the court, that way they dont have to run up and down the court trying to keep up with those young horses. I know that those refs have got to be tired and maybe thats why the makes such bad calls,You know fresh eyes on each end might work better, personally I think if the officiating is bad you should be able to say something about it without the league comming after you with some hefty fine. What if for every blown call or know call we fine Mr. stern and the refs see how they like it ,I bet games would be call right and it wouldnt look like the refs and league is out to make it a kobe prince james final.LOVE THE SHOW BIG FAN KENNY
Loretta Richardson,Columbus, Ga
I think the referees have made some bad calls throughout the playoffs. There are a lot of picky fouls.
Isaiah from Las Cruces, NM
As an NBA fan, these playoffs are frustrating to watch. The drama is great, but the refs continue to prove every critic right. Rip them Skip!!!
Dennis (Weymouth,Mass)
The muppet commercial aggravated me I'm so sick of Kobe and Lebron no 1 man will win the NBA Title because it's a team sport the Celtics proved that to Lebron then Kobe last year that's why there is no who on who it will be ORLANDO vs.DENVER team sport
Kurt Daytona Beach, Fl
I'm getting tired of all these touch fouls the referee's are giving to star players. Kobe, Lebron, Carmelo... All get the red carpet treatment from the referees. Even though I'm a knicks fan, I live in FL, and have been following the Magic. I can think of at least a half a dozen times Lebron looked more like a football player driving the lane, creating contact, and gets the call every time!
jerald oakland,ca
the difference between kobe an labron at the end of the game kobe makes free trows labron dosent it should b kobe n wade cause wade had a better year offensive an defensive year then labron check stats
Jared Manhattan Beach California
I thought the NBA playoffs was supposed to be physical. Basketball is a contact sport. Why is there a foul being called on basically every possesion during the game?
Paul (Indianapolis, IN)
Last night Phil brought up the refs and whined about them. At least Gundy let the reporters bring up the refs calls and said write what you saw because he didn't want to sound whinny. You have to wonder who is doing the better coaching right now.
Bryan Cumberland, MD
Skip...you need to wake up, I know you are a LeBron hater, but please take a quick look at the stats...did you look? He is averaging 41.7pts, 7.3assists, 5.7 rebounds and 53% from the field! These stats are ridiculous while his running mates are doing what?
Dylan Jacobsen (Dutch Harbor, Alaska)
Good morning guys, it seems like im the only one outside of orlando and denver that would be excited/happy to see those two in the finals. phil jackson went off the hook last night didnt he?
Kyle, Washington DC
After watching the Lakers Nuggets game 4, I'm fed up with the officiating, Jones' trip and the lack of consistency horrible, but what if the league didn't let the players argue EVERY single call? Now I know they can't T up the world starting this at this point in the playoffs but it'd be nice to see something implemented in the near future. Stern has done nothing to solve the officiating problem... And for that I say, "Come on David?! I barely even mugged the guy!"
Chris from Louisiana
What do you think of the trip Jones did to Kobe.
Moderator (9:44 AM)
Chris we'll discuss that in 1st Down today on the show
mike ,youngstown ohio
I,m a cavs fan but if they have all these match-up problems my question is why not play a zone! exp. box and 1, 1-3-1 or even 3-2 and try to stop the pick and rolls and try to slow down orlando's three point game?
Stevie in Orlando
Cleveland has been given every opprotunity to beat Orlando, by Lebrons play and help from the refs. They simply are not the better TEAM. Starting with Mo and company. "One trick ponys" can beat average teams but not the good ones.
Jason (Chicago)
Hey Jared, that is the exact reason I stopped playing basketball. Guys like shaq can throw their weight around and knock guys down with their butt, but if your arm grazes his arm during the shot, its a foul. Basketball is way to inconsistent.
Brent (Overland Park, KS)
The reason the Cavs can't play zone is because Dwight Howard is too big to cover down low. Plus, the inside out game would collapse the zone just to see a pass out to Rashard Lewis for a wide open 3.
JULIUS(SPRINGFIELD MA)
cleveland is the lebron james show PERIOD.
Umor (detroit)
That was psyco referee calling last night. 1st quarter let them play 2nd what's a foul. 3rd I don't know. 4th screw it.
Dana Jacobson (9:55 AM)
morning folks
JULIUS(SPRINGFIELD MA)
lets go DENVER and ORLANDO
Allen B. Milwaukee, WI
Why has professional basketball become so much like professional wrestling? The refs call a flagrant foul on Bynum, but don't call a deliberate trip by Jones. Also the refs call a foul on Dwight Howard that was a clean block on Lebron James. It should be the NBAE.National Basketball Association's Entertainment. Not Professional Basketball.
Dana Jacobson (9:56 AM)
allen it's been this way for awhile...easily 10 years, easily
Jeremy (New Orleans, LA)
Allen what do you do? Are you perfect at whatever you do? I'm not perfect, and no one is, why are we giving these refs such a hard time I mean come on it's an extremely hard job and these guys are the best in the biz. Yes they made mistakes and some call were bad but you can say that in every game. Stop making it out to be something it's not other than a bad day by the refs.
Moderator (10:02 AM)
Jeremy gets the prize for being the voice of reason this morning...1st chatter to mention the refs without complaining...
Cowboy Ron (Piston, PA)
Good morning Dana! Really looking forward to hear from you today. Did you see that Lacrosse highlight yesterday? Wow, nearly changed my life.
jeremy (kansas city, missouri)
If the finals end up being the Nuggets and Magic rate it on the upset scale please! i say 8.6
Dana Jacobson (10:02 AM)
Cowboy Ron, I did see it. didn't watch live, was busy enjoying the day.
Adam G. Tampa
Bryan in Cumberland what's Lebron's free throw percentage? EXACTLY Magic win tonight.
Glenn (Orlando)
Right Stevie, Cleveland was totally overrated.
Jeremy (New Orleans, LA)
<---- is the Voice of reason (where's my prize?)
Moderator (10:03 AM)
try to get you a shoutout on the show today...
James Denver
Why did you not post a single comnent I made about game 3s terrible officiating favoring the Lakers but your posting comments about last nights. ESPN loves there Lakers they will get 23 vs 24.
William atlanta ga
I have heard Skip say all season that the talent around Lebron James is underated. The way they have played in this series against Orlando does he still think that?
Adam G. Tampa, FL
Chris Birdman Andersen did not look like Hans Christian Andersen for once!
Dana Jacobson (10:04 AM)
james, comments were posted just not yours. come on now. you get on here quite often.
Michael Kim (10:04 AM)
Good morning, everyone... Hope you had a fun and safe holiday weekend... and a thanks to all the men and women who have served and are serving our country.
Jonel Goudou,Boston,Ma
If Lakers advance to the finals, what team would have a better chance to beat them?
Michael Kim (10:07 AM)
The Magic present matchup problems for the Lakers -- just as they are doing to the Cavs. But right now, the Nuggers are giving them all they need to worry about.
Jay Crawford (10:08 AM)
good morning room! happy tuesday to all! even lebron haters and magic fans. lol
Chris (Virginia Beach, VA)
Michael, Since I serve my country in the Army Reserves, will you post all of my comments?
Jay Crawford (10:09 AM)
i will Chris! many thanks to you and all our service men and women!
Adam G. Tampa, FL
Jay better hope the Nuggets beat the Lakers because the Magic can beat the Lakers in the Finals, I'm scared of Denver.
Ryan R (New York, NY)
Its unbelievable how guys like Dhantay Jones and Bruce Bowen get away with their dirty plays. NBA should think about maybe banning them.
Jay Crawford (10:09 AM)
you sould be adam. they're legit
Quinton (Victoria VA)
Hey Skip I wish I could come on 1st and 10 so I can tell you how wrong you can be sometimes. When you talk about T.O. it is ridiculous Tony Romo is just as responsible for Dallas shortcoming T.O. can't throw interceptions in the 4th quarter or mis handle holding a field goal kick.
Chris Savannah GA
I want to know why there has been basically no talk about the Padres win streak, yet when the Yankees and Red Sox had theirs they were big news.
Ron Balzack (Grundle, LA)
Jay only follows fair weather Cleveland sports. Funny he doesn't talk about how the Indians choked it up yesterday with Carmona before getting lucky late.
Jay Crawford (10:10 AM)
lucky ron? get over it. the rays choked in the 9th like carmona gagged in the 2nd.
Adam G. Tampa, FL
Mike in Youngstown how can you play a zone against the Magic?? The Magic live and die by the 3 , you play a zone that means open shots. That's what they want the Cavs to play.
Jay Crawford (10:10 AM)
good idea james.
Kenny, (Hubbard, Ohio)
Hi Jay and Dana! Love the show. I was wondering if either of had a particular favorite movie?
Jay Crawford (10:11 AM)
morning kenny! major league of course! it's the only time a cleveland team can win a championship...lol
Chris (Virginia Beach, VA)
You da man, Jay!! Stop leaving all the time on the show. You are the best host on the ESPN Family of Channels. You carry yourself in a manner that shows you love sports, not broadcasting, and broadcasting was a means to be around sports. Not like some of those hosts that only want to be great broadcasters, and not a fan of the sport they are covering. I aspire to be you my friend.
Jason (Chicago)
Jeremy, I think that is a poor way to look at it. Refs get paid a lot of money to do a job. If I made as many mistakes at my job as they are making in these playoffs, I would be penalized in some fashion. Additionally, any player makes a mistake or argues a call or whatnot and they are going to get fined. What happens to these refs when they make BAD game changing calls? Oops? oh well...
Pat (Denver)
everyone is freaking out about the Dahntay Jones play, but did anyone see the post game interview w/ Kobe? He called it good hard bastketball
Moderator (10:12 AM)
Jason, you got 22 camera angles on you at your job?
Jay Crawford (10:12 AM)
chris, many thanks my friend. i do love sports! all sports. broadcasting just allows me to be around it!
Cameron (Virginia Beach, Virginia)
Jay i'm assuming you watched the game last night. I was wondering what you think of all these soft touchy fouls be called throughout the playoffs. As an fan it's so frustrating to watch a foul called on every shot. Also, these jump into a player fouls are getting completely out of hand. The NBA needs to make a rule for such a thing.
Jonathan (Atlanta, GA)
Come on, Jemele! A suspension for tripping over someone's foot!?! Next thing you'll be saying is that a guy should be thrown out for looking at someone the wrong way. Let's not get ticky-tack with the penalties.
Jay Crawford (10:13 AM)
i did cam. it just drives me nuts! it really does.
Michael Kim (10:13 AM)
I think Kobe was being a bit sarcastic in some of his answers, truth be told. I think he will have more to say in Game 5.
Kerry (Cleveland, O)
Adam, that is someone who hasn't ever played the game. Cleveland DOESN'T FIGHT OVER THE TOP OF SCREENS, if they'd just play good fundamental Defense, the Magic are very beatable.
Calvin W (Clearwater, FL)
Lacrosse deserves some love today. Yesterday's final between Syracuse and Cornell might have the greatest final in collegiate sports history.
smokey, atwood, ca
SKIP I DON'T ALWAYS AGREE WITH YOU BUT YOU GOTTA ADMIT. THAT JONES DID ONE OF THE MOST DIRTIEST PLAYS I HAVE EVER SEEN! I AM NOT A MAVERICK FAN I AM A LAKER FAN, BUT MARK CUBAN WAS RIGHT, I WANT TO SEND HIM A BOX OF CHAMPAGNE CUZ HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE NUGGETS BEING THUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jeremy (kansas city, missouri)
just think of what mauer's stats would look like if he hadn't been injured to start the season
Jay Crawford (10:13 AM)
good pt jeremy!
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
do you mean to tell me they actually play winning-ball in SanDiego???
JBarbs (Allston, MA)
We want Glauber!!! We want Glauber!!!
Grant ( Lafayette, LA )
The NBA is quickly becoming one of the softest leagues ever!!! If Bill Laimbeer played today he would be suspended every other day. Its getting worse then the QB's in the nfl .
Ripken (Des Moines, IA)
Good morning guys, can't wait to see today how Dana tries to stick up for Michael Vick. Second chances, second chances. That's all she talks about!
Michael Kim (10:14 AM)
Calvin - I won't go that far but great run by Cornell and kudos to the Cuse for its perserverance. Would have been a bigger, better story for mainstream consumption if Cornell had won.
Terrence Alpharetta, GA
Mo Williams is right, they will win this series because David Stern wont have it any other way!
Adam G. Tampa, FL
Hey Jay's Indians beat my Rays = * (
Kerry (Cleveland, O)
Ron, Jay is not a fairweather Cleveland fan, he wears it on his sleeve, even the Browns as bad as they've been. Am I in the right chat this morning? SO MUCH WHINING and CRYING and COMPLAINING..
Charod (PA)
I can't believe skip saying that jones' play wasn't suspension worth. THAT WAS INTENT SKIP! there could be NO justification for that. JONES IS A DIRTY PLAYER PERIOD.
Jay Crawford (10:14 AM)
wild game adam. worst work of home plate by an ump in years!
Ray Jersey
Give me a break with this Kobe getting tripped nonsense... with all the flagrant fouls the refs have been giving out these playoff... people want to call a trip a flagrant foul... give me a break and tell kobe and all the kobe fans to stop crying
ALAN(TAMPA BAY)
NO WAY SHOULD DANTE JONES BE SUSPENDED. ITS THE PLAY OFFS AND A TRIP IS A FOUL, NOT ASSAULT AND BATTERY.
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
the fact that lacrosse even made it on TV, and was viewed by few, says enough about the sport
Cowboy Ron (Piston, PA)
Hey Jay, did you see Jose Canseco last night in his MMA fight? He got pounded by a 7-foot-2 giant. Can we expect to see ESPN MMA Live's Jon Anik on to talk about it today?
Jay Crawford (10:15 AM)
good question ron. sorry, but no.
derek (iowa)
do you think Sportscenter will implode if "king james" doesnt make the finals?
Jay Crawford (10:15 AM)
derek, i doubt it.
Dana Jacobson (10:16 AM)
yes ripken i'm an awful person for that
david (charlotte, nc)
have to admit, skip is right... as ugly as it was to watch him stick his foot out and trip kobe, it wasn't intention to hurt him... it's pretty much the same thing as a defender sticking his foot out at the ball, causing a kicked ball... intent to stop the play... i'll even go one step further... an offensive lineman gets a tripping call if he does the same exact thing on a football field... but his intent is to stop the pass rusher from getting to his qb, not to hurt the guy
Michael Kim (10:17 AM)
Good post, David in Charlotte.
John, Austin
As a high school basketball coach, watching the Cavs play offense makes me ill. Screen and roll, nothing, do it again, nothing, give it to Lebron, hope he makes it.
James Denver
Jeremy a voice of reason award from Dana is meaningless. Shes the most unreasonable I love women and everything Detroit voice on here.
Cameron (Orlando)
This is what the NBA should do to Dahntay Jones, they should FORCE him to gaurd Kobe for the entire game!! His ego will be shot, and he will never trip Kobe again.
Jeremy (New Orleans, LA)
Jason can you do any better? I said it's a HARD job and in any Hard job they have mistakes. Not just anyone can be an PRO official, it's not easy. The President gets paid a whole lot and makes mistakes but guess what it's a hard job and it happens.
Danny (PHX, AZ)
Is Mo Williams in the witness protection program? Where did he go?
Jonathan (Atlanta, GA)
How legit is Mo Williams guarantee comment?! He isn't even playing that well. He needs to worry about his game instead of making Namath-type predictions.
John, Austin
I think we can get rid of the idea that Lebron isn't clutch after the game 3 big shot but watching the Cavs offense makes me ill.
Dana Jacobson (10:21 AM)
James, i know im horrible to stand up for a reporter that was being attacked just b/c she's a woman. AND GASP!!! I cheer for detroit teams. Oh no!!! Seems quite unreasonable to me. Much more so than whinning when comments aren't posted and claiming its b/c we're all out to get you.
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
I'm really wondering which Cleveland team is going to show up each game, the one that beat up on the rest of the league or the one that bewilderingly had trouble with EVER playoff team???
Cameron (Virginia Beach, Virginia)
It drives me nuts too. I don't understand how it has gotten so out of hand in these playoffs. They call small soft fouls, but then hard fouls don't get called. I don't understand how there can be such a difference in the calls.
Aaron (Denver)
Denver vs Orlando...the 3-point line will be on fire
Adam Jacobson. Tampa, FL
You have to be happy for Carmelo Anthony... he has arrived as an A List NBA star, almost lost out on a championship run due to the Detroit Pistons horrible draft. Now he finally links up with Chauncey Billups. Imagine if the Detroit Pistons would have drafted Melo
Los angeles,ca [via mobile]
Why do the Lakers get so comfortable? They seem to play when they want to.
Jeremy (New Orleans, LA)
John THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one who can see that Mike Brown is an awful coach and is the luckiest man on earth to have LeBron James. His man game plan is get it to LeBron and pick and roll. No matter the situation that's his plan and that's sad. Hes a great Defensive coach but not a good head coach.
Jonathan (Atlanta, GA)
Hey Jemele, why are you hatin' on the fans! We want to see good basketball that's all. You're a little off your game today. Usually I'm 100% behind you.....today I'm with Skip (unfortunately).
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
The proble, David in Charlotte, is that sticking out a foot to slow down a big fat defensive lineman is different than sticking out a foot to make a basketball player running at full speed who has to fall defenseless on a hard floor...........BIG DIFFERENCE
david (charlotte, nc)
thanks michael kim... i always request you to co-host when dana or jay are away... see, i knew you were a smart guy!
Terrence Alpharetta, GA
Im sorry but I just dont trust the NBA anymore.
eric detroit michigan
JUSTIN VERLANDER! He is back in business and I hope you guys give him some love. He is the hottest pitcher in the AL with this weak division Tigers can take it.
John (Louisville, Ky)
I love this chat room!
Jason (Chicago)
Fair point moderator, I just feel that there has to be some way to create some consistency in refing. Like Dana said, its been going on for at least 10 years now. Jeremy made the point that we should just give them a break...maybe, if they are intramural refs getting paid 20 bucks a game. But this is a professional sport and its not like there is just 1 ref on the floor. I think we should be able to expect more
Pat (Denver)
I am so tired of all "THUGGETS" talk, just because they are out there being physical and banging in the paint every game day in and day out and these "soft" teams cant handle it. This league is turning into women's lacrosse (no offense lady laxers) but what do u want a bubble around all the players?
JOE (Athens, Ohio)
Does anyone think that Tom Brady could turn out like Carson Palmer when he came back after his knee injury
Roxanne (Cumberland, RI)
Dana....funny you are trying to stick up for women today when you had nothing nice to say in this chat about the WNBA yesterday. Hmmm.....
Elena, NY [via mobile]
Dana, I'm so impressed by you with your multitasking skills. I'm watching you on TV right now and you're still answering questions and dealing with flack from certain chatters.
Dana Jacobson (10:25 AM)
see apparently i don't like women! no one is ever happy!
Craig (new york)
if Lebron doesnt make the finals will the media stop trying to compare him to Jordan?
John, Austin
Did Dana just say Roy O could get dealt? So the Astros sign Mike Hampton and Russ Ortiz and get rid of Oswalt. Smart, real smart.
Dana Jacobson (10:25 AM)
john details in doubleheader later in this next segment
Tom (River North)
As I've said many times before, the Cavs win despite Mike Brown, and you are seeing it in this series. He's getting outcoached by Van Gundy (can't believe I wrote that sentence), and the offense is looking stale.
Joe, Colonia, NJ
How fast can vitamin water create a pair of Carmelo/Howard puppets for the Finals? Haha
Umor (detroit)
Hey Verlander back. That was sick stuuf he was throwing yesterday. KC hitters were swinging at the wind half the time.
Dana Jacobson (10:25 AM)
joe good question
Kerry (Cleveland, O)
John in Austin, As a player, coach, Cavs fan... Their offense makes me sick too!!! Their lack of defensive awareness is even worse. Just Match up and play tough man to man Defense. LeBron on Hedo and run an OFFENSE
Demitry (NJ) [via mobile]
The refs have been horrible in both playoff series. Don't just look at stats. Lebron has to make free throws in the 4th
Roxanne (Cumberland, RI)
All we are saying Dana is be consistent. You dont' want us having to be the pot calling you the kettle in your black dresss.
Moderator (10:28 AM)
where's Calvin in Clearwater today?!?! Its a lacrosse bonanza on the show today
jeremy (kansas city, missouri)
If Arod still hits over 30 HR and has 100 RBI and 100 runs in his shortened season will people still think he is on the juice?
Moderator (10:29 AM)
the damage has been done Jeremy, doesn't matter what he does now
Jeff (Atlanta)
Iwamura out for season. Dirty play?
Dana Jacobson (10:29 AM)
Roxanne I am consistent. I dont have to like the WNBA to stand up for a woman being attacked purely for her gender. I don't think the product is good. I think they spread themselves too thin. There's nothing inconsistent in that.
Mike (Savannah,GA)
Does anyone watch the games?? How come Skip and JH are the only ones who speak the truth. The refs carry Lebron and make horrible calls all playoffs long. There is no excuse for how bad they have been.
Moderator (10:29 AM)
looked like a clean hard slide to me...
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
Mod = the problem is that he's one of only 12 people in the entire country that give a hoot about lacrosse
Calvin (Clearwater, FL)
I love lacrosse! How's your hangdown America because Syracuse LAX made my weekend!
Chris (Rapid City, SD)
I also agree with Skip on the technical and flagrant fouls. Enough is enough. Every time down the floor the refs are calling a T on somebody. It used to be to get a foul like that, you had to punch a guy in the face. Now, you don't even need a reason and the refs are calling them. It's like David Stern has set a quota for the refs to call a minimum number for a game.
Aaron (Denver)
The Nuggets interior passing was the difference last night...Even JR Smith was dishin the rock.
Dana Jacobson (10:31 AM)
Mike, a lot of people/analysts have commented on the officiating. Thing is you can't change it and you don't know what it will be like game to game. SO I think some analysts are just focusing on what the teams can change but I have heard many analysts comment on it.
C-Rod (Redding, CT)
I have to say that it's pretty poor that you guys won't give Phil Hughes any credit for the GEM he threw yesterday. I know people think ESPN is an east coast bias, but First Take is definitely a midwest bias with Jay and Dana running the show.
Moderator (10:33 AM)
let me guess, C-Rod, Yankee fan? did you see how Hughes refused to shake Girardi's hand when he was taken out after 8 IP?
Pat (Denver)
I'm w/ you Calvin, I LOVE LACROSSE, fastest game on two feet and has more meaningful history than any other sport in this country
Moderator (10:34 AM)
other than upstate NY and the DC area, why isn't lacrosse big anywhere else??
Dana Jacobson (10:34 AM)
James your post on selena is too long to put up. BUT several people on here said she must be writing the book b/c she was "turned down" by Arod. If that's not sexist, you tell me what is. Trust me that's not what Buster bashed her for if he bashed her. If you're bored and feel that we are out to get you James, it's all your perception.
Tom (River North)
C-Rod, you must be crazy. There isn't a day that goes by that the Yankees or Red Sox aren't discussed on First Take.
Danny (Tonasket, Wa.)
I used to say consistency but after watching the playoffs this weekend, I have to say that we need BETTER officiating. I don't care which team wins in either series but these have got to be the worst officiated playoff games I have ever watched, especially Cavs, Magic. The TYPES and Obviousness of the missed calls is ridiculous.
Chris (Virginia Beach, VA)
Amy Nelson needs to come back to be the Moderator of Your Take. Shes way more cooler than the hacks that do it now.
Dana Jacobson (10:35 AM)
Danny, great point. In that we always say it's bad all over so at least it's consistent
Moderator (10:35 AM)
I'll pass that along to the hacks in the clubhouse
Lee (Houston, Tx)
Dana what do you think should happen to Dahntay Jones?
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
"has more meaningful history than any other sport in this country"........WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???? roflmao
Adam Jacobson. Tampa, FL
JUST SHUT UP AWARD GOES TO C-ROD
Dana Jacobson (10:36 AM)
Lee, I don't think a suspension. Go back give him a flagrant maybe. Want to see it again at regular speed. Slo mo makes everything look meaningful.
JOE (Athens, Ohio)
I am sick of hearing about officiating, some games are called right others are not but there is always going to be a missed call. You can not make everyone happy so just suck it up and play the game.
Pat (Denver)
Mod that is where the heart of Lacrosse is but it is growing everywhere when I was growing up playing out here there were only a handful of teams per age group now there are close to 20-30 teams per age group starting at in the 2nd grade not to mention CO has one of the biggest Lax tourneys in the country (Vail Shootout)
kyle, (aurora, CO)
after watching Nuggets and Lakers game 4, all i can say is i am tired of all the attitude and arguments between the players and referees. first off we get it Kobe got tripped and didn't like it, ....also i have to say that because of the amazing play of both JR and 'Melo this has been an amazing series so far
Aaron (Denver)
Skip is a runner send him after the Cheese!
Joe, Colonia, NJ
With Hip,Hip Jorge Posada comin back to the lineup next week, the Yankees will have the modern day Murderer's Row!
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
C-Rod (Redding, CT), Yankee fan here, Hughes threw a ruby and it was against, arguably, the best hitting team in the majors in one of the worst pitching parks in the majors. You a Yankee fan?!
Danny (Phoenix, AZ)
Does ESPN have any sway in trying to get lacrosse played during the summer. It would be a great alternative to baseball. Right now I have to decide between the end of NBA or lacrosse...guess which wins
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
Dana & Jay = that cheeserolling stuff is not facscinating, it needs to stay on "Stupid Human Tricks" nite on Letterman.......lol
Joe, Colonia, NJ
Is it tradition to break the winner's ribs when he gets to the finish line?
Michael Kim (10:41 AM)
Joe - if Jorge hits like he did before going on the DL, that lineup is incredible.
C-Rod (Redding, CT)
All of you need to realize that the rest of the world doesn't care about Ohio State and MIchigan and it's all Dana/Jay talk about.
Aaron (Pittsburgh)
The cheese roll is fantastic, but my all-time favorite event I've ever seen is the shin-kicking contest
ROB SINTON TX [via mobile]
SKIP UR PROBABLY THE SAME GUY CRYIN TO THE REFS IN A PICK UP GAME. CAN U ADMIT THIS IS SOME OF THE BEST PLAY-OFF BASKETBALL WE'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME.
Kevin (Akron OH)
Cleveland is missing a dominant center. Z is not a center and is soft he is a forward. lakers have gasol and binum. thats the missing link in the cavs championship chain.
Jason (Chicago)
Dana, would you do a cheese run?
Joe, Colonia, NJ
That HUGE Shaq head on a bike was baaaaaaaddddd
Ryan (Louisville, KY)
Shaq just did one go around and was already sweating haha
juan new York [via mobile]
I think espn is hurting the NBA because they want that lakers cavs finals so bad that I think the refs are being influece with all that. hipe
mike indy
The fans are acting too much like the whining NBA Divas. You want every call to go your way no one ever commits a foul and the way players and coaches act is rubbing off on the fans obviously.
Michael Kim (10:43 AM)
Kevin - are you saying Bynum and Gasol are tough? Am I clear on this? If so, no way those guys are your answer if toughness is the first priority. Sorry.
Moderator (10:43 AM)
amen, mike
Aaron (Denver)
All Jorge needs to do is pop up to right field and he'll be just fine.
Jason Ventura cali [via mobile]
Did anyone see c. Billups last night? Gamer! As far as the fouls and such...it's just part of the game...raja vs Kobe...Bowen vs Kobe...Denver knows the recipe for beating l.a...rough and tough!
Michael Kim (10:43 AM)
Aaron - that's a fair point with the new ballpark. Still can't believe Teixiera hit a homer five rows deep while shattering his bat.
danny (phx, az)
LMAO @ Bynum being the missing link...you must mean missing as in Missing In Action
Dana Jacobson (10:43 AM)
Juan, interesting note. Bob Delaney one of the NBA refs was here with a book about his days as an FBI informant (years ago before officiating). Anyway he told us how as refs they stay away from reading about their series but will watch game tape to see how things are called, who's doing what. I think he'a trustworthy guy and if you believe him...what espn says doesn't factor in
Bryan(Staten Island, NY)
Hey guys do you think with the addition of Tony Gonzalez, the Falcons are serious contenders to win the NFC title this season?
Calvin W (Clearwater, FL)
Michael:How can you say that the lacrosse from yesterday would have been a bigger and better story if Cornell won. It is the comeback that made the story. I know your updates are scripted but there was not enough mention that on the goal that tied the game. There were two behind-the-back passes, one was tipped, that led to that goal. The passes were made in desperation. It was just fate that those passes were completed.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
IMO- the Lakers would be awful to watch in the finals. Their team just doesnt seem interested in playing...win or lose at least Denver shows up and brings passion to every game.
Jack (Dayton Ohio)
Who is in charge of this league David Stern or Howard Stern, some of these calls are a joke.J.R.Smith should be sitting out the next game. Thank GOD I had mall cop to watch.
Dana Jacobson (10:45 AM)
Bryan I love the gonzalez add. IF the team picks up where it left off and there's no soph slump for ryan. They have a tight end weapon which they didn't last year. I know their offensive doesn't include much for a tight end...oc doesn't call for it. With gonzalez there TRUST me that will change. Otherwise why trade for him
Ryan (Louisville, KY)
I wanna see less calls! I thought i was watching a nfl game with all their penalties. Should of just played touch basketball last night, especially that Carmelo/Kobe pat on the chest, really?
Jonathan (Atlanta)
LOL, I don't think Skip could catch the cheese, Aaron
Dana Jacobson (10:46 AM)
Jonathan, I think he could!
Michael Kim (10:46 AM)
I'm not dogging the Cuse in any way. That was a sensational comeback. My point was that if Cornell wins -- with upsets in the Final Four over UVA and Syracuse-- the mainstream media plays it up. Syracuse is like the Yankees of LAX. When the Marlins and DBacks beat them, it's much more of a "bigger" story than if the Bombers win another title. That's where I'm coming from -- but that comeback was thrilling and impressive.
Kyle (jacksonville, FL)
Right Dana.. like a regf is going to admit to you that other refs know who the commish wants in the finals. I don't trust any NBA referee anymore.
david (charlotte, nc)
c-rod... you make it sound like you watch the show a alot, but if you did you wouldn't be saying that... i'm a yankees fan, so i hate to go head to head here... but you're just wrong... of course when it's time to talk michigan/ohio st. they go at it, and it's fun to watch... maybe it's just my personal opinion here, but when skip and jay go back and forth about the cavs and LBJ, i think it's great that jay can just be the cavs fan in the argument, and doesnt have to be so objective just because he is the host
Dana Jacobson (10:47 AM)
Kyle i'm cynical...i can't be that cynical sorry.
BC Bell (Boston)
For all of you haters who keep ripping Dana for believing in second chances, can't you see how good Birdman is doing for the Nuggets? Where would he be without grace and forgiveness?
Matt (Milford, De)
Note to JR Smith: Act like you've been there before.
Calvin W (Clearwater, FL)
Michael: I dont' mean to call you out but seriously. Syracuse made me cry, it was so exciting. Have you ever cried for some stupid Lakers game?
Michael Kim (10:47 AM)
Calvin -- not a Lakers fan, so the answer would be definitively no.
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
Calvin in Clearwater = you're one of 12 guys in the whole country that watches lacrosse.....give it a rest......roflmao
Nathan ( Oklahoma)
Kevin(Akron)- Z is soft but so is Gasol and has been the whole playoffs he should have dominated when Yao was out, and Bynum just cant be relied on!
TIMM COLUMBIA S.C.
DO A QUICK FANTASY DRAFT OF THE 4 REMAINING NBA TEAMS AND SEE HOW FAR THE SUPPORTING CAST OF THE LAKERS AND CAVS FALL. CLEARLY THE NUGGETS AND MAGIC HAVE THE BETTER PLAYERS SHOWING UP IN THE PLAYOFFS.
Michael Kim (10:48 AM)
Nathan - I'm with you on this front. It's about that time of year when Gasol goes back to his shell. Just see last year.
Joe, Colonia, NJ
Thanks Michael, somebody saw the way Jorge carried the Yanks before pulling that hammy in a game that should not have been played to begin with on a soaked field!
Jim (Dover. DE) [via mobile]
Do these questions actually get posted? Or does it take a while to show up? I been waiting over 5 min to see my question show up?
Moderator (10:49 AM)
someone take Jim aside and explain the rules to him
mike texas [via mobile]
Do u think james three at the buzzer the other night can compare to jordans shot against clev
Chris (Virginia Beach)
Skip's right. Brady will be nasty, and the Pats could go undefeated again.
Jonathan (Atlanta)
Skip's right. Brady will be fine this year. It's not like he's a running-type QB that needs his legs. He's a classic drop back QB. If it was his arm that was injured then it would be a different story but it's his knee. He'll be fine. Pro Bowl QB.
Jeff (Atlanta)
Tom Brady is a genius. Jemele is wrong. He will definitely make the pro bowl.
Matt (Milford, De)
All I'm saying is that if someone had tripped Lebron, it's automatically a foul and maybe even an ejection. He is protected like a QB.
Steve (Syracuse, NY)
I am a Syracuse Alum...and I must say Lacrosse National Championship just doesnt mean much to me. Wake me up when football/basketball season begins
Dana Jacobson (10:51 AM)
matt sorry was going to read this after the last down but was hurried along.
Lee (Houston, Tx)
I hate the Pats with a passion but i expect nothing but greatness from Tom Brady, but i wouldnt start him in the pre season. but wit all those weapons he has in Boston dont count Mr Braby out he will still be the reincarnation of Joe Mantana.
Brad, PHX [via mobile]
Matt, amen on the JR Smith comment.
Mike (Savannah,GA)
How can people on here stick up for the refs and say as fans we are acting like Divas.. Are you watching the same games. I am a Lakers fan and I get mad at the bad calls that go against the Nuggets. All I ask for as a fan is a fair game with no influence except what happens on the court. Not cheap fouls being called.
Trevor (warner robins, ga)
I saw the halftime piece on the Birdman last night. I think that its awesome that he is doing well. Its great to see people who rise from the ashes. Very redeeming.
Zach Pittsburgh PA
im glad the magic is up 2-1 and the nuggets tied the series! i really hope to see the nuggets v magic in the finals. i dont wanna see the "all hyped" kobe v lebron
mike indy
The Patriots want you to think Brady wont be the same go ahead and disrespect them they thrive on that and hasnt he won like 21 of the last 22 games he played in only losing the superbowl?
Michael Kim (10:54 AM)
We have Diamondbacks pitcher Clay Zavada on the show now -- Anyone else think he looks a bit like Rafael Palmeiro?
Umor (detroit)
Hey The Birdman is fun to watch.
Joe (Swansea Massachusetts
I think you guys are forgetting some players who had the surgery and came back successfull.. Ronnie Brown .. Carson Palmer and last year Phillip Rivers had the best year of his career after the year prior having the same surgery with alot less time to heal
jeremy (kansas city, missouri)
tom brady's 2007 season was one of a kind, best ever. he will most definitely not come close to those numbers. i say 32 TDs, and 12 interceptions which is still pro bowl worthy
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
Jim (Dover. DE) [via mobile} = just because you post something means it, at best, stands a 1-in-10 shot at getting posted..... and then it needs to be iconic, ironic, or downright funny
Joe, Colonia, NJ
THUD! Chris, NEVER type Skip is right EVER in this room! His head could explode just seeing the post!
chase, dallas [via mobile]
Where is Big Ben for da Cavs. I think he can help bring the extra toughness down low on the defense side of da ball. Keep him da paint to stop drives while everyone else covers da 3 ball.
Jason (Chicago)
Jim (Dover)... Just keep posting.. the analysts have to weed through tons of comments and do a show at the same time. I dont think its personal when your comments dont get posted. They just pick the most appropriate comments and the right times.
Tim Donaghy (Philadelphia)
Why is everyone always giving the NBA refs so much flack? Why can't people just play the game and leave them alone?
nick toledo,ohio [via mobile]
no offense guys but all the ref whining is ridiculous..excluding last night we have seen some darn good hoops..and the contention that the star treatment is a last decade thing need to pop in some jordan years videos..
Uzo (Louisville, KY)
The Birdman is this flamboyant guy, with cool hair, who plays with high energy and blocks shots. I can't see what race has anything to do with that. Probably the same reason Dennis Rodman was popular although he was better known for rebounds
Jason (Tampa, FL)
How about the The Tom Brady rule in baseball? Aki iwamoura for the rays just got knocked out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL. How many injuries like this one, sliding into second or third base, must happen before baseball reacts to it? Maybe when it happens to Derek Jeter? He wasn't even in the base path!!!
Michael Kim (10:58 AM)
Jeremy - Randy Moss tells ESPN.com that he thinks they'll be even better in '09. HIs explanation could be true: That Moss and Welker were in their first year of the offense in '07. With three seasons under their belt and a healthy Brady, Moss says "the sky's the limit"...
Joe, Colonia, NJ
Hamilton on the Rangers is another on that list of turning their lives around.
Pat (Denver)
mike, texas, that shot will only compare if the cavs do anything w/ it otherwise it is just another buzzer beater
david (charlotte,nc)
i can't even take this guy serious with this stache
Jonathan (Atlanta)
Man, that's tough! When a Syracuse alum doesn't even care about them winning that says a lot about the sport.
Candace kc,mo
the james shot made me jump out of my seat. jordan was a special guy and no matter how hard anybody(kobe)tries to be him they can't. so no can't compare
Josh (San Luis Obispo, CA)
Chris Anderson is the white Rodman his antics on the court drive us wild. It may just be part of the bad boy persona but this is what high energy players do they pass it on to the fans.
Chande (Orlando, FL)
Mike Texas - not just no but hell no. Jordon's shot close the deal, so right now no they don't compare. But if LBJ somehow wins the series then maybe it can be compared. BTW GO MAGIC!!!!
Adam G. Tampa, FL
Does Birdman Andersen get the loudest ovations in Denver ?
Kyle (Jacksonville, FL)
Just wanted to say thanks to Dana, Jay, Michael for taking the time to do this. Does Skip ever chime in or is he still communicating by smoke signal?
CULI MACC (DAYTONA BEACH)
THE BIRDMAN WOULDN'T BE THE BIRDMAN IF HE WAS BLACC!! THERE IS NOT THAT MANY 6'10 WHITE CENTERS WITH HIS ATHLETIC ABILITY.. MOST TALL WHITE GUYS AREN'T THAT SMOOTH OR HAVE THE STAR QUALITY..
Kyle (Jacksonville, FL)
Dana, watch how often Orlando is 'magically' whistled for fouls from now on and see how cynical you are after cleveland "comes back" and 'wins" the series.
Aaron (Denver)
Adam (Tampa)...Yes the Birdman gets an ovation the minute he gets up to walk to the scorers table. The city loves his energy and story...He chose to come back here and the city loves him for it.
mike indy
Man dont ever disrespect the Worm like that Rodman has 5 rings and how many defensive player of the year and rebounding titles Birdman is cool dont get carried away Rodman should be in the HOF.
Dana Jacobson (11:05 AM)
kyle i've been around the game a long time. I just don't believe that david stern says we want this team in so make it happen. In my sacramento days there were many lakers playoff games between the clubs that were horribly officiated. I spent hours listening to conspiracy theories. Was the officiating bad? yes. did stars get calls? stars of teams who'd been there b/f or closer? yes. but i dont think it was b/c david stern said make it happen. sorry.
tom nj [via mobile]
Stashes are a great place to hide goo to load the ball with.
Chris (Virginia Beach)
That Mr. T thing was hilarious. Please just replay that over and over.
TJ, Vermont [via mobile]
this chat is wack. wickicky, wickicky wack.
Dana Jacobson (11:05 AM)
chris you'll be happy to know we'll get back to it in first and ten
Danny (Tonasket, Wa.)
Why do you guys talk about ESPN_FirstTake on twitter, I am on right now and there is only one twitter from First take all day. What is the point?
Candace kc,mo
hey jost i agree. if birdman comes out with that in game 5 the lakers are done.
Josh (central cali)
Before the playoffs I was hoping to see a budding rivalry of Melo and the King but as those commercials keep playing I am going more for Superman then the King
Dana Jacobson (11:06 AM)
Danny we try not to bombard people with stuff. depends whats going on as to how much you'll get
Aaron (Denver)
I literally turned away from the playoffs just to watch Mr. T deliver that gem at Wrigley...classic.
chase, dallas [via mobile]
Skip is right 98.6% of the time. Trust I have done the math. Way to go Skip, keep it up.
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
Hell Yeah, the Birdman is fun to watch!!! It's 2009...Race has nothing to do with It (I am a black guy)! My cousin told me his story a few months ago and I have been marvelling ever since!
Michael Kim (11:07 AM)
How bad are the Cubs that they have to turn to Mr. T to help get them out of a losing streak -- and it doesn't work.
Scott (colorado springs) [via mobile]
Dana, Don't forget we want a birdman interview !
Dana Jacobson (11:08 AM)
scott, trust me we've been asking. don't know if its the hour or days or what. But know that the request has been in for awhile now
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
Clay Zavada will be robbing a saloon after the show!!!
Chris (Virgina Beach)
Awesome. I have a fever, and the only prescription is more Mr. T.
Dana Jacobson (11:08 AM)
christ that or more cowbell
Frankie V Merced, CA [via mobile]
any chance the Raiders can steal the AFC west?
Michael Kim (11:08 AM)
Funny line on Zavada, R Mom
Justin (Dickinson, ND)
Hey don't pick on the T he his just trying to get his jewlery back!
Dana Jacobson (11:09 AM)
frankie - good afc west article on espn.com by their blogger about how all the teams are so up in the air. the chargers the only one that you have expectations for. I have to agree. I see it as being san diego's to lose.
Michael Kim (11:09 AM)
Yeah, where was all his bling? There must be a story to this.
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
Clay Zavada will be robbing a saloon after the show!!!
Dana Jacobson (11:09 AM)
R Mom, nice
chaz (sa tx)
it would be the biggest heist of all frankie v
Joe, Colonia, NJ
I pity the fools the pick the Cubs to win the Series!
jason thomas (Huntsville AL)
Race is not the only factor for birdmans popularity. I mean you always know when he's on the court, plays with excitement and after that story they did on him at the half last you cant help but root for him.
Aaron (Denver)
Jamele and Skip are right...Adam Morrison crushed the hopes of all "white american" youth...long live the Birdman.
Kevin Bronx, NYC [via mobile]
Besides Dana the NBA needs a Chris BirdMan Anderson and Dennis Rodman
Rob (Tallahassee, Fla.)
Birdman is like Dave Cowens (gamer that plays hard all the time) with personality.......
Philadelphia, PA [via mobile]
Andy Roddick to me is the most overrated tennis player ever. The best thing about him is his serve thats it. Do you guys think he deserves the high ranking he has now?
tomwit nj [via mobile]
The aptly named CULI voiced what white NBAers have been labeled for years. Slow, no flash etc. In Europe the white players dont know they are inferior and therfore reach potential. Remember whites are minority in NBA. Fact is we are all great, black or white.
Calvin W (Clearwater, FL)
Has Jemele ever heard of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Chris Mullin, Bob Cousy, etc?
Dana Jacobson (11:17 AM)
calvin, she's looking present day
Moderator (11:17 AM)
Philly....tennis rankings are done by computers, not by subjective voters like a college football or hoops coaches poll..Roddick has the ranking he earned
Nick McGurk (Streator, IL)
To R Mom: Clay will be robbing hitters for a long time to come.
Bill (Andover, NJ)
It's not simply race, but I like Birdman's overall appearance along with the mohawk and tattoos. To me, he looks like one of those "skateboarder punks," me being one, myself.
Aaron (Denver)
Birdman, like Rodman, is the type of player the home fans loves to love and the opposing fans love to hate.
Tuf Atlanta [via mobile]
All this Brady talk its amazing how the sports world gets caught up in so called heros let not forget there is a 6'5" QB out there with a questionable line n a dare I say #1 Def. Winning Superbowls! Talk to me in Feb after Ben get #3 and Steeler Nation gets #7!
Dana Jacobson (11:23 AM)
Tuf, its b/c brady' s coming back....and it's may. trumps possible repeats right now
Chad (Las Vegas)
Was that Mr T performance yesterday his audition for the next version of Surreal Life on VH1?
Jason (Chicago)
I pitty the fool who doesnt slide into the 2nd basemen
Dana Jacobson (11:23 AM)
chad and jason, nice
Joe, Colonia, NJ
As long as a player can reach the base, he is in the baseline! The player knows he'll be "taken out" and either makes the throw or holds and jumps.
jason thomas (Huntsville AL)
the slide on iwamura was disgustingly dirty. since when does a base runner run sdieways???
Paul(Warwick,RI)
Any ss or 2b knows that you clear your legs first! CLEAN PLAY at 2b
Aaron (Denver)
It is NOT a dirty play. Middle infielders are coached non-stop avoiding the slide. The runner easily could have touched second base. Iwamura poorly executed the technique.
Hook (Southern Maryland)
When I saw the highlight of the Iwamura play. I knew he had torn a ligament. The runner did what he was supposed to do by messing up the thrower so they don't get a double play but the way he slide was dirty.
charlie (detroit)
back to the birdman debate....jenell said that a black person with birdmans trates would be responded to in a negative way....PlEASE remind her of the ben wallace era in Detroit! We had a slogan "fear the fro" Big ben was a hometown favorite and we had White, black and every other race going to the palace to watch the pistons wearing fake fros! Race doesn't ALWAYS have to be talked about when it comes to popularity!
Candace kc,mo
mr. t bless your heart.
Dan (GA)
I dont think its race...its the fact he plays hard all the time and is fun to watch...not because he is white, green, or purple...
fernando, AZ [via mobile]
Does anyone think the braves will get some power before the trade deadline?
gil jasso(perris,ca)
maybe phil jackson should put adam morrison in the game, they have to try something diffrent. The current bench players are struggling and not effective.just empty the bench throw in mbenga and sun.
CULI MACC (DAYTONA)
DAMN DANA, YOU COULD HAVE READ MY COMMENT.. I SAID BASICALLY WHAT SKIP SAID..
Matt, Randall MN
I agree with Skip, Lebron has not done a good job of finishing games in this series. If it wasn't for one shot this series would be over.
Bob minooka il [via mobile]
What are the chances the blackhawks win game 5 with all detroit injuries
Michael Kim (11:26 AM)
Fernando, there are a lot of teams seeking power. As for the Braves, I thought Francoeur would be that guy but his last two seasons, the power has been missing.
Kyle (Jacksonville, FL)
Skip is right again.. LeBron is better getting his teammates involved than going 1-on-5
Paul(Warwick,RI)
Birdman plays "D" and hustles.I think that is why he's popular, not because he's white.
Brent (PA)
Skip " Birdman" Bayless is my hero
Dana Jacobson (11:26 AM)
bob, it'll be tough at the joe. Especially with chicago's own issues in net. They've got another day too...keep hearing either datsuyk or lidstrom will be back for 5
Jason (Tampa, FL)
Good zinger aaron (denver). That was funny. Wasn't he suppose to be the next lary bird?
ALAN(TAMPA BAY)
IM A 29 YEAR OLD AFRICAN AMERICAN, AND I CONCIDER BIRDMAN A HERO OF MINE. IVE BEEN THROUGH A PAST HISTORY OF DRUG ABUSE AND OVERCOME IT. AND HIS STORY IS ONE TO BE SHARED FOR EVERY MAN, WOMAN, OR CHILD GOING THROUGH HARD TIMES.
mike indy
Some time the player has to save himself from the slide and bailout eat the ball and live to get that out on the next play.
chase, dallas [via mobile]
Birdman is a beast. Lamar Odom needs to take notes. If Lamar played as hard as Birdman every night he would be one of the greatest.
Michael (Spotsylvania, VA)
Jamele is right in talking about media and society perceptions when it comes to black and white athletes. The problem is the more we bring race into the discussion the more we perpetuate the problem.
Dave (Tallahassee, FL) [via mobile]
It was a horrible slide on Iwamura. Dirty? Yes. The replay shows Iwamura wasn't blocking the basepath. Coghlan should be fined.
Mike (Durham, NC)
Birdman is the same as Ben Wallace was with the Pistons. Crazy hair. Crazy athletism. Hustle plays, but no real basketball talent. This has nothing to do with race.
Mike Racine,WI
The Iwamura play was dirty. The barrel role that guy did was wrong. But breaking up a DP itself isn't. How many DP's are there a year and how many actual injuries are there that come from them? Not many. Quit overreacting.
Chad (Las Vegas)
All this talk about Birdman and no mention of how stupid New Orleans was for letting him go.
Paul (Detroit)
Iwamura did not execute properly period.
Ronnie (Laurel, DE)
The slide was somewhat a dirty play, but Dahtay Jones pushing Kobe in gm 3 and tripping him in gm 4 is just down right DIRTY.
Mike (Savannah,GA)
I am a huge Lakers fan but I would love for Phil Jackson to be fired. He shows no heart, how can you expect your young players to be motivated when you aren't motivated??
Tom (Asheville, NC)
Skip you are dead on with the slide or take out of the Rays player. Im surprised there was not a fight after that.
Arthur (Spring Valley, NY)
Birdman is popular because He Created his own image! its not a race thing! when you create your own image thats how you are perceived! The detroit pistons were know as the "BAD BOYS" because thats the image they portraited on the court! Its the Image you portrait when your perform, NOT YOUR RACE!
Jay (Mi)
So the Nuggets beat up on the "all mighty" Lakers. I had the Nuggets in 7 to begin this series anyways. I also had the Magic in 6.
John, Austin
Dana, was that THE Justin Verlander that hit 98 on the radar gun yesterady in the 6th inning? For a second it looked like Nolan Ryan.
Sigg from Ohio
I think we see an all new Cavs team tonight heading back to cleveland 2-2. Lebrons support starts knocking down shots.
Chris (Virginia Beach, VA)
One other thing Jay, can you slap Skip in the face and tell him its from the 392nd Signal Battalion?
Jay Crawford (11:31 AM)
CHRIS, THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD!!!!
Michael (KY)
Michael Kim: The only thing Jeff Francoeur is good for these days is that slingshot arm he has in right field. Time to start giving up on his bat. He reminds me of Adam Dunn... with less power
Michael Kim (11:33 AM)
A lot less power..
Ryan Oklahoma [via mobile]
can you really trust a team so dependant on the 3 like orlando to win in the playoffs. I just dont think orlando can put two more games together
Michael Kim (11:34 AM)
Ryan, they've been doing it pretty much all season - and Hedo doesn't go cold for long.
Adam G. Tampa, FL
Moss and Brady better get ready for Bart Scott and the new improved Jets Defense, oh yeah and that Sanchez guy watch out for him, he may be the new Matt Cassell this year.
Jeff (Stockbridge,GA) [via mobile]
Do you think the NBA is still afraid of another Palace incident? Thus, the quick whistle in these playoffs?
Dana Jacobson (11:36 AM)
Jeff, I don't know that they're afraid I just don't think they want to be forever known as a fighting league. this isn't contact sport level of football and i don't think they want that to be how they're thought of.
Jeff v [via mobile]
Right cleveland is overrated... O wait they should be up 2-1 if they didnt blow huge leads.
Wil (Orlando)
Don't listen to Michael Kim, anyone who supports Mizzou can't be trusted to know anything about sports....damn it, he's right though.
Hook (Southern Maryland)
Unless it is the World Cup or Euro championships. Soccer is boring. The country vs country aspect is what makes it worth watching.
Michael Kim (11:37 AM)
LOL - Thanks, Wil for the support
Jasen/ Minnesota
I wanted to comment on your debate about the rays player who is now injured for the year. First of all it was NOT a dirty play in the slightest. That is baseball, are you telling me they are supposed to let me get the double play? No, your not. if you see where he was standing on the bag for that play, and he did not need to be there...he tried beating out the runner and pushed the limit by tryin to turn the double play. I think you need to look at the game of baseball. He didnt need to be on the end of the bag trying to turn the double play. If he didnt try for the double play, he may still be playing. Its apart of the game. Leave it alone.
Joe, Colonia, NJ
I think that thing Tommy is talking into is a mike/shaver. You get a smooth shave while talking!
LA, California [via mobile]
Is the birdsman really that popular outside of Denver? I hate his look which makes it hard to respect his play.
Tom (River North)
Matt Cassell was throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker last year. Who are the Jets WRs again? Let's not get crazy.
Umor (detroit)
Tommy Smith RuleZ, Ask him to give a shout out to Chip Bayless
Trevor (warner robins, ga)
hey Dana, do you think that Vick has to sit out a year to show remorse, and do you think he was a great QB before the drama. I don't. Yes he was exciting, but he made only 1 serious playoff run in 04 and was injury prone after that. Not a accurate passer and thats what a QB should be. They should never lead the team in rushing or rush for 1,000 yds, or if they do im sure the team is not a contender.
Tom (Asheville, NC)
That mic looks sort of old school microphone...Kind of funny looking but i like it
Uzo (Louisville, KY)
Some soccer talk! Nice :) Good job Jay and Tommy. It is a big game tomorrow. Jay or Dana can y'all do anything to get ESPN to increase the amount of soccer shown?
Michael Kim (11:38 AM)
Looking forward to seeing if Moss is correct that he and Welker are better now than they were two years ago....
Esan (College Station, TX)
It takes a lot from a person to overcome an addiction and Birdman MUST be respected for that alone and also for his efforts
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Why aren't more people talking about Joe Mauer this season? He's only hitting .444 w/ 31 RBI over 23 games...and he's a catcher! If he was on Boston or NY, everyone would be going nuts over this guy.
Joe, Colonia, NJ
That;s the ONE reason I don't like Man U, they're owned by the Glazers!
Dana Jacobson (11:39 AM)
Trevor, I dont think he has to sit out a year to show remorse. I think its tough to know if someone is genuine in his/her remorse and only time will tell if you accurately judge it. NO he wasn't a great QB. He was elusive, highly skilled, and deserving of a starting job in the nfl. BUT I would have taken many qbs over him...donovan, brady, etc. AND no he shouldn't lead his team in rushing as a qb, he should be an option a dangerous one at that...but not the top rusher
Sean (Athens, GA)
No matter what people say about soccer, it is never boring to watch world class players displaying world class skill at any sport.
Jack (philly,pa) [via mobile]
Hey dana is anyone intrested in football anymore ? I want to hear about first round picks especially jeremy maclin
marques nasti nati, oh [via mobile]
Who cares abiut birdman's story? He's as basketball player playing basketball to the best of HIS abilities...giving his whole backstory and sobbing about his past makes ESPN look a little like LIFETIME!
Jeff (Ohio)
Franceour is Adam Dunn with less power? Dunn is the epitomy of plate discipline while Francouer is swinging at warmup pitches. Can you guys stop posting these dumb comments?
Chad (Las Vegas)
Who's Joe Mauer again?
Dana Jacobson (11:40 AM)
Jack, info at this point trickles in b/c so many ota's are closed to media excepte for one day a week. BUT there are a lot of updates on espn.com - the blog nation does a great job of keeping up.
sunny (rochester,NY)
Denver will win the series if they box out after every shot and stay out of foul trouble and not sending L.A. to the line early, which is what Billups, Melo and Nene did early was not fall in love with the jumpers but take the ball to the hoop, putting L.A. over the limit early
Moderator (11:41 AM)
how can it be sunny in rochester, NY?
Arthur (Spring Valley, NY)
To be honest, to support the UEFA Finals, the best comparison to something that the Americans can compare to is this... The Dreamteam of the 90's, playing against the Dreamteam of last year. The best of the best again the best of the best! (Just subract the age difference.)
Michael Kim (11:41 AM)
Jeff - Agree. Dunn is a OBP monster (or donkey, if you prefer) The guy is a perennial .400 OBP and .600 SLG player.
tom nj [via mobile]
As a white player on many predominantly black teams in my youth I learned 2 things. Athletes can be any color. It hurts just as much to hear your black friends say cracker when they think you are not listening as it would to a black guy that heard the n word. Differences make us interesting. Sports are for fun. Does it really matter?
Andrew (Corvallis OR)
im not a soccer fan but that game sounds like the olimpics and an all-star game slamed together with the all-stars actually playing for something.
Hook (Southern Maryland)
Joe Mauer has been a beast. He has already hit more home runs than he did last year.
Dana Jacobson (11:42 AM)
Tom, it was a subject jemele and skip both wanted to discuss. i agree, it shouldn't matter, differences make us interestng, but we shouldn't be afraid to talk race. it's the only way to air misunderstnadings/perceptions out
jeremy (kansas city, missouri)
joe mauer will go down as one of the top 3 catchers of all time. in the discussion with pudge and mr. bench
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Adam Dunn is the epitomy of plate discipline? Sure, and Oliver Perez is the epitomy of control and mental stability.
Michael Kim (11:44 AM)
Doubtful that Mauer and Cuddyer can hit exactly as they are now, but assuming they hit about .300 (.330 for Mauer) and continue slugging WITH Morneau's .400 OBP/.600 SLG... watch out for the Twins!
Dave (Tallahassee, FL) [via mobile]
Iwamura didn't execute the double play b/c Coghlan "chested" Iwamura's knee. Coghlan ran out of the basepath to make that contact. Dirty and shameful.
Jeff (Ohio)
Thanks Michael, good to be on the same side of this argument eh. To go further I think Dunn probably walks more in 1 season then Francouer will in 10.
Jonathan (Atlanta)
I pitttty Skip Bayless!!!
Jayson (Florida)
Brady is gonna have a hard time coming back from this injury. Don't we say this about every other player that gets injurd. Just cause its Tom Brady does'nt mean he's any different
Internet tough guy (fakest place on earth)
LA, California- that's shocking coming from someone who lives in LA, and probably is a Lakers fan.
Michael Kim (11:47 AM)
I'm curious why Francoeur isn't able to hit 20 hrs by accident withhis size, power and playing in ATL. .
Matt (Minnesota)
Mr. Kim, It is highly likely that Mauer will hit around .350 though. Last year when Chipper started like this, the press was going crazy about how he could hit .400. Mauer is a much better hitter that Chipper.
Trevor (warner robins, ga)
I will take anything over Carl Lewis butchering the National Anthem. So I pity Carl Lewis. lol
Mike (Savannah,GA)
To trevor in Warner Robins, Vick should not have to sit out a year he did his time. Yeah he wasn't the best QB but he is in the top 32 for sure. Also like I have said before why don't people make such a big deal over what Stallworth did. Is a dogs life more important?? If Stallworth was driving drunk and hit a dog then would what happen. PETA would go crazy.
Josh (cali)
Vick will have people refusing to go to games and have people picketting everywhere he goes. In this economy you want someone who draws a crowed not force it away. Vick is bad for business
Moderator (11:48 AM)
how 'bout the Rosanne Barr rendition, remember that one?
mike indy
Eli and Ben are not accurate qb's but they have won. What about this new league dennis green is starting should Vick go there and prove himself first?
Trevor (warner robins, ga)
Shoutout to "The most interesting men on the planet" Michael and Jay. "Stay thirsty my friends." Brought to you by Dos Equis!
Dana Jacobson (11:48 AM)
mike i dont think he'll have to. i think a team will take a chance in a back up role or in a wildcat role..
tom nj [via mobile]
Dana I was not criticizing the discussion. Its not always fluff. I was referring to the reason such questions exist. Talk.when civil.is good. Did that come out rite?
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Chipper Jones is the Fred Taylor of baseball, only better. Both these guys have put up ridiculous #'s over an extended period of time, and don't get the respect they deserve outside of their home cities.
Craig(Buffalo,NY)
Jay Crawford, come to Buffalo and talk about championship drought
Darrin , Summerville , South Carolina [via mobile]
Good Morning , First Take crew. Why is there so much talk that Lakers should be down 3 games to 0 , and no one is saying that about Cavaliers?
CAPO. DET,MICH [via mobile]
KOBE WHO? LEBRON WHO? Forget the so called DREAM MATCH ! And PLEASE stop comparing these guys to the GREAT M.J! Neither are on that level nor will reach his pedestal! 2 on 2 WADE and DURANT would dog kobe and lebron!
Michael (KY)
To Matt in Minn.... Mauer is NOT proven enough to be called a better hitter than Chipper! Especially at this point in both of their careers. You are WRONG!
Dana Jacobson (11:51 AM)
gotcha tom. ive always said it's sad that we ask them but then am amazed that 2 people can perceive things so differently. even the word thug in a discussion the other day in a meeting here. to a couple men who are black i work with they said it had race implications to them. i said i never would have thought that..if i said thug race would never play a role in it. amazing you know how we all perceive the same things differently
Brandon(Goldsboro N.C.) [via mobile]
Is it possible for the new england patriots to be better in 09 than they were in 07?
Dana Jacobson (11:51 AM)
brandon, they weren't perfect so yes
B. Stroud-Clark (Atlanta,GA) [via mobile]
to Jeremy from New Orleans. I don't expect anyone to be perfect but I have to agree with Mike Golic, All I expect is consistency. I don't want them to make every call, just make the obvious ones and the ones that aren't obvious make sure you call it the same way all game. And don't make up a call for a previous bad call.
jeremy (kansas city, missouri)
durant would be post man in a 2 on 2 matchup with lebron and kobe and he would get manhandled.
Michael Kim (11:52 AM)
Matt -- Don't know if I'll go that far. Love Mauer but Chipper is a Hall of Famer. PLUS, he's a switch-hitter with a great eye and plate discipline. My concern with Mauer is his position and how the daily grind can wear on him over the course of the season.
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Capo please remind me...what has Wade won without Shaq? What has Durant won period? If 'Bron had Shaq 3yrs ago, they'd have won 70+ games and a title.
Wil (Orlando)
seriously...Wade and Durant over Kobe and Lebron?? Kobe can defend Wade all over the court and is a far better shooter while Lebron can simply manhandle Durant. Sure it would be an exciting game but no way would Wade and Durant "dog" Kobe and Lebron.
Matt (MN)
Michael, so right now you would not take Mauer as a better hitter than Chipper> Mauer does have two batting titles already in his young career. There is no doubt that Chipper has had an amazing career, but we are not comparing both player primes. We are comparing them now.
Vitroni T. Camp hill al. [via mobile]
Kobe won't win 1 w/o BIG FELLA!
Feeve; Milwaukee, WI
I gotta question Capo. Do u think Wad and Durant will make every shot? They better because neither one of them can get a rebound over either opponent.
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
I'd take Chris Paul and 'Melo over Wade/Durant
Lee ((H-Town, Texas))
Wade&Durant over Kobe huh funny bro seriously....
R Mom (Spring Valley, NY)
That National Championship Lacrosse finish made me wish I watched Lacrosse games. Nonetheless, Great Highlights!
Hook (Southern Maryland)
Ryan Howard would win the cheese race. Once Ryan starts to tumble, anyone in his way is done.
Trevor (warner robins, ga)
Good show today guys. I'm going to practice my cheese rolling! "Stay thirsty my friends." That commercial is so hilarious to me. From now on thats my signoff! lol
Michael Kim (11:58 AM)
Matt -- I think Mauer is a great stick and on a tear this year but I'm not going so far as to say that he's a better hitter. I just think Chipper is an alltime great. Keep in mind, Chipper never had a Morneau hitting behind him either.
Penny (denver, co) [via mobile]
Why is it that everytime the lakers lose its big time espn news, but when they win they get 5 minutes of you guys time?
Moderator (11:58 AM)
are you a fan of the Lakers or of air time, Penny?
Aaron (Denver)
I'd hate to be one of the "Stoppers" in Howards cheese race.
Calvin W (Clearwater, FL)
How was Ryan Howard not a first-round pick?
Michael Kim (11:59 AM)
Pujols was a 13th round pick.
robert (riverside,california) [via mobile]
The lakers will win the series, nuggets getting to cocky, especially j.r. Smith, who had his best game of playoffs last night and acts like he is better than kobe or carmelo, that fool should go back to the playgroung.
Trevor (warner robins, ga)
oh by the way BRING BACK LIL' PENNY
Feeve; Milwaukee, WI
Penny, The answer is it's good TV to make the Lakers seem vunerable and on the decline, because it keeps people who hate Kobe, which are plenty, watching.
Matt (MN)
Michael--Good point. Chipper is an all-time great, no argument there. I see Mauer hit everyday, and I would take him (now) over Chipper. Mauer has a lot to do though to have as good of a career as Chipper
Feeve; Milwaukee, WI
It's easy to boast and pose after two WIDE OPEN SHOTS. Kobe hits those shots with people touching him all on his head and face.
Michael Kim (12:05 PM)
Fun as always... Have a great day.
Dana Jacobson (12:11 PM)
