AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Rainy day here where I am. Hopefully we'll be able to keep the clouds at bay for the next hour with another fantasy chat. Who's on first?
In a vacuum, when should owners sell a category they are dominating? Likewise, when should you give up on a category? Half-way point?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
I think you need to look at your league and see how much the average in that category is per week. If you're behind by an amount that you can't make up ground with simply by reaching the average, you can feel good about giving up. Same for being ahead. If the average performance is going to keep you at or near the top, you can feel good about trading some glut.
AJ, Is Bartlett now a bonafide top 5 SS?? It seems a little late in the season for him to all of a sudden go in the tank.
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Numbers don't lie. I just re-ranked my personal list of MLB value-to-date and Bartlett was #5 - OVERALL. I think there's definitely a regression coming, but not a complete cliff dive, no.
Someone dropped Gil Meche in my 12-team mixed league. Should I drop Snell, Happ, or Kawakami for him?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I'd pick him up for Snell right now.
Micah Hoffpauir--will he get regular starts and/or will Soriano move to 2B?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
What will Lou do? I've heard more buzz on the Soriano move than anything else, but will Lou pull that trigger? I'm not so sure.
Good morning AJ. With the catcher spot so light, is Doumit worth stashing away now that he may be back in a couple weeks?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
You have room to stash, why not stash? After all, I think a healthy Doumit is more likely to produce at a high level than a guy like Wieters.
Is Happ legit?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Happ is a solid pitcher, but that's based on the bullpen role. As a starter? He certainly did alright versus the Yankees, but I still have concerns about his effectiveness on the second + time through a lineup.
Howdy, AJ. How valuable is Zobrist now with the Iwamura news? Worth starting in a weekly H2H?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
He probably is worth starting, but keep in mind that as of now, he is not 2B eligible under a 10-game system... nor is Brignac or Aybar. He'll have to play a full week at 2B in order for him to be a 2B replacement.
PPD (Rainy City without Domed Stadium, USA)
Hi AJ, always enjoy the chats! Different kind of question for you... for a daily H2H league, if there's an afternoon rainout and the game never even begins, why does the player spot lock? It would be nice if you could swap the player out of your lineup for someone with a later game that hasn't started yet. It doesn't happen that often, but it's aggravating getting a zero from a position player because there's no way to know if the game will just be delayed -- or completely postponed. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I understand the frustration, especially when it happened last week with the Cubs game that got cancelled with no other afternoon games scheduled... but like you said, it doesn't happen often... and you can decide to risk starting a player with rain forecast or not. It's unfair, IMO to let you swap out your player when the game is cancelled immediately by the team, while another owner can't make the change because that rain delay goes on for three hours before the game gets called.
Is Liriano pulling a Fausto Carmona? Great rookie campaign, injuries, slow descent into relative mediocrity? That slider is still filthy...
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Filthy sliders aren't effective when you're not finding the plate. It's a matter of control with Liriano, and walking 4+ per 9 is not going to win you games no matter how good the stuff is. Until he rediscovers a modicum of control, he's doomed to descend.
Tom (Dodger Land)
Ethier or Loney going forward?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Ethier. Loney's never going to provide me with the power that Ethier is capable of, and he's not going to wow me in the other categories either.
Antonio Ortiz (Miami,FL)
E Santana or Kershaw????
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
I'm going with Kershaw for now.
what to do with the Floridians? Nolasco and Percival. Should either be dropped, or traded for 10 cents on the dollar?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
If you can get anything for them, be my guest. I do think Nolasco has a chance to work out his issues in the minors. The Marlins seem to think it's all mental rather than physical, so a few good Triple-A starts might "cure" him... but when it's mental, there is no timetable. As for Percival, when a player not named Favre starts mulling retirement - get rid of him for whatever you can.
Henry (Cleveland, OH)
I currently have Polanco as my 2B. Should I drop him or at least make room somewhere on my team for Kennedy who is doing way better so far this season?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Henry, you can't look at the batting average of Kennedy and say he's doing way better - the difference in AB, Runs, RBIs... all favor Polanco in fantasy value so far. No having said that --- going forward, I have no problem in you projecting Kennedy to have more value... just make sure you're doing it for that reason, and not for a misunderstanding of who HAS BEEN more valuable.
Wandy somehow manage 0 earned runs yesterday. Can you explain please? I watched the game and couldnt figure it out.
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
The official scorer originally rules Willy Taveras' leadoff at-bat a hit. He later changed it to an error, making all the 5 runs unearned.
Uggla or Aaron Hill going forward?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Hill. He's got a lot of support in that lineup, and even if he gets cold, he still has a chance to continue to drive in runs with outs.
Good morning AJ. The fantasy gods have smiled on me and I have both Dice-K and Edwin Jackson available in my league. Which one would you pick up?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
I'm going with Jackson. He's been a No. 2 value so far, and for a FA pickup, that's hard to come by. I'm a bit concerned with Dice-K's WHIP-raising tendencies.
Bernard (Princeton, NJ)
I drafted David Price and waited 9 weeks for THAT??? He couldnt throw enough strikes to hold a 10-0 lead?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Reason No. 286 why you shouldn't start a pitcher on his first outing of the season after being called up... and Reason No. 371 why you shouldn't be too judgmental of one outing by a pitcher. Price is good, will be good...
2008 Aaron Hill Owner
Don't listen to AJ. I traded Uggla for Aaron Hill last year per the advice of "C-Dub", right before Uggla went on a tear. Hill was junk from that point forward.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
And players never change... their stats are always the same, year after year. Why not go trade away Greinke for Randy Johnson based on past seasons, 2008 Aaron Hill Owner. Sheesh!
Is Adam Laroche a guy to keep around or should I dump him and move on
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
He's not a top-100 guy, so if you can get someone who is, then go ahead. Not knowing the depth and availability in your league though, I can't possibly make that call for you.
JT (Boston, Ma)
Is this a good time to sell high on Verlander? or do you think he can really keep this up all season?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
I'm the first to say mea culpa on Verlander. I didn't think he'd get back to this level, and well, here he is. It certainly is a good time to sell high in the sense his value has never been higher. But I think I'd hold on to him, at least until he has one blowup outing, then sell high to someone who wants to "buy low".
Al (Pine Grove PA)
Are you a top-100 ESPN guy or should I go read a chat of someone who is? I currently have you at 107 on my Power Rankings.
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Clever, Al. Go ahead and give yourself that pat on the back for that one.
Do you like Mark Reynolds more than Lowell or Cantu? Thanks, AJ.
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
I actually like Lowell a little better right now. I've been a big Cantu fan as well, but he seems to always be DTD of late.
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
All the CQ questions, the short answer is, he's being re-evaluated today and as of yet, I have not heard any update on his status.
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Definitely bench him today though- he's bound to miss a few games even if a DL trip isn't what the doctor orders.
Max Scherzer (AZ)
Remember how I asked you if Bartolo Colon would outpitch me last week and you didn't waiver at all? Would you like a lunchbox to eat your crow in?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
That's right I didn't WAVER. I stand behind my opinions, and yes, sometimes we're wrong - especially in a one day guess. But I will not eat any crow here - Bartolo got to my sandwich first.
Err.. how does "sell high to someone who wants to buy low" work?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
It's all about perception. If you think a player's production will drop from this point forward, you're selling high. The best partner for your deal is someone who thinks he is buying low on a player who will perform far better from this point forward, which is more likely after a starting pitcher gives up 7 ER in 2 IP. You're always more likely to get someone to pull the trigger on a deal when he thinks he is fleecing you.
Thoughts on Cliff Lee going forward? He seems very unlucky in the win department thusfar with solid peripherals. Are you buying low?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Yes I am. Wins are irrelevant in my book for projections. I'd much rather have a 2-5 Lee than a 5-0 Martis.
Nelson Cruz - is he for real or what? Would you part ways with Underpence for him?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
I'll be brief. I do not have faith that Cruz will be higher than Pence in fantasy value when the 09 season is done.
1897 Willie Keeler owner
I, too, had Aaron Hill last year.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
I am going to finish the season as a top 25 starting pitcher. Get on the bandwagon now!
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Not buying my ticket for the ride just yet. You'll get me halfway to my destination, but not all the way there.
Rob (State College)
AJ - Impatient owner dropped Price. Should I use my #2 waiver claim on him? If so, would you drop Liriano, Kershaw, Shields, or Marmol for him? (My other RPs are Cordero, Francisco, Hanrahan, and Rodney). Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
You don't need Marmol when you can have Price. I'd make that move.
What type OF could you expect to get for A. Cabera? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
You can probably get a Span or a Werth - but if you trade him to Iwamura's owner, you might be able to get much more.
Morneau (St. Paul, MN)
Sell high on Mauer????
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Don't trust your teammate, Justin? At the catcher spot, I stick with Joe.
Your top 5 sell high guys?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Top of the head - Ellsbury, Reynolds, Figgins, Kemp and Jose Reyes (that injury may bother him all year)
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
That's the end of my time gang. Thanks for the questions and comments both pro and con. We'll see you all the next time on Villa Alegre!
