AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
Good morning gang. Tristan and I swapped out days, so he'll be with you tomorrow morning at this time. I'm here for the next hour... So You Think You Can Ask Questions? Let's see... cue the music!
Pumped (B'More, MD)
Will Wieters earn immediate induction into the hall of fame after his performance the rest of this year? Seriously....Roberts, Jones, Markakis, Huff, Wieters, Reimold... that's a pretty decent 1-6.
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Yes, gang. Friday we should see Wieters in action for the first time. From a baseball standpoint, I think it definitely helps the O's pitching staff which has a lot of arms familiar with Wieters in there right now. As for fantasy, let's see what the kid can do before declaring him Johnny Bench.
Juan Pierre (Los Angeles, CA)
What happens to my value once Manny returns? Should my owners be trading me now?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
I think Juan continues to play. Torre always favors veterans and if Ethier continues to struggle, he'll be the odd man out once Manny returns.
JT (Ft. Worth, TX)
By a strange chain of events (don't ask), I have both Mauer and McCann in a 10-team mixed keeper league. Right now, I've got one at catcher and one in my utility slot. Which one do I hang on to and what do I hold out for in a trade for the other?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Why trade either? You're not getting anything more valuable than what Mauer gives you right now at utility, and McCann is as hot a catcher as there is.
Blue Jays OF name game-Lind or Rios?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Put me in the Lind camp.
Matt: manalapan, nj [via mobile]
Is ricky nolasco worth keeping around?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
From all accounts, the problem is a mental one and not a physical one. That's a double-edged sword because while it means that it could be fixed quickly, there's also no set timetable for a recovery - so if you have a bench spot to sit on, then keep him... but this could be a long stay in Triple-A for Ricky.
blabbity blabbity (chat land)
chris carpenter = top ___ hitter
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I assume you mean what you can expect to get for him in a deal... he's not going to be perfect from here on out, but if you can find an owner who believes he'll be close, there's no reason you can't get a No. 2 OF for him or better.
James (Queens, NY)
ARod is back to full-strength as a fantasy perfomer by ____?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
It's really just the average holding him back... he's climbed halfway up the ladder in his limited time back, so I think it's only a few more weeks until he's in the Top-100 Season-to-date neighborhood... that's not too shabby considering how much time he's missed.
Torii Hunter (Anaheim)
Can I get some props please!?!?!?!? No one is talking about me and I have been a top 10 player so far.
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
You have indeed been Top-10 hitter so far. However, your age makes you *unsexy* and everybody would rather have the Gamels and Wieters of the world than the Hunters, Damons and Abreus.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
What's going on with Carlos Quentin?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
I've heard he's getting more tests done and we won't be seeing him anytime soon - though the DL is not yet etched in stone either... which makes little sense.
Raul Ibanez (Philadelphia)
Mike Cameron and Manny in front of me in the recent all star voting? The voting system needs to change do you agree AJ?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
If it was a straight exhibition, then I'd say no. But since Bud Selig decided to make this game count, then there should be no way fans have any say in who gets to play. Period.
Sizemore heading to the DL? Seems to be the rumor of the day.
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
He should DH for a few more days, but if Pronk comes back and Grady's still hurting, I see a DL trip very likely.
RYAN BRAUN! Any word on his injury?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
X-rays were negative (hit by a Wainwright pitch on the hand) and he'll probably miss today. However, he should be OK for the weekend, if he's not too sore.
Zack Greinke (Out of this world)
I'm pretty damn good, but that Justin Verlander has been even better the last month of the season. I'm glad Ahmad from Staten Island has both of us.
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Toot, toot, Ahmad. Toot, toot.
Which over the hill clean up hitter do I want, Sheffield or Jose Guillen? OBP and hits league.
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I'm in the Jose camp, though the injury to Church pretty much locks Sheff into action for the time being, which closes the gap a bit.
Has Max Scherzer "turned the corner"? 10k's in each of his last two starts. Too late to buy low, but will he be a top 30 SP the rest of the way?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
It's not the K's that impress - it's the endurance. That was always what held him back, the inability to go 6-7 with regularity. If he does that with consistency, he's definitely a Top-30 candidate.
Charlie (Syracuse, NY)
Speaking of Gamel, is he worth a roster spot? He wasn't too impressive for the interleague play and now he's only looking at the occasional pinch hit.
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
LaPorta just got sent down, and I'd not be surprised if Gamel didn't join him to get more at-bats. If the Brewers seriously aren't planning on starting him, then he's not worth a roster spot in 09.
Which would you rather have going forward - Wolf, Zimmerman or Meche?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Wolf. Better offense supporting him, and best stuff of the three when he's on.
Pretty shallow points league, where Juan Pierre is available and I have Ethier. Drop one Dodger for the other?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Pierre's not going to hit any HRs, so if you're lacking there he doesn't help. But other than that, he's looking like a better longterm play, at least until the All-Star Break, when you can re-evaluate.
AJ please help. Would you trade J Santana for a package of ARod and Chamberlain? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Not a chance.
Sizemore or Bay in 6x6 (standard 5 cats + OBP)? Am I crazy to keep Bay? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
No, you're not... especially with Grady possibly headed for the DL, and Bay continuing to contribute Top-20 value.
Avoid Rangers pitchers like the plague in fantasy, right?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Frankie is OK to own and Millwood is passable, but generally speaking...
Should Scott Baker's start last Sunday make you feel any better about owning him?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Any good start makes you feel *better* about owning a player --- but he's still not ready for being in my rotation.
Let's say Mauer puts up a .380/30/120 year from the catcher spot. Where does that rank him draft-wise going into next year?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Not that simple Shane - yes, that would make him the No. 1 catcher in all likelihood, but it's still all relative to everyone else's stats and trades in the off-season... Let's wait until September is over for this one... but obviously, that stat line = good.
Re: the Johan for ARod/Joba deal...could you elaborate on your answer? most fantasy experts seem to favor stud hitters over stud pitchers, and in this proposed deal, there's a servicable pitcher going along w/ the hitter...i don't question you're answer, am just looking for clarification.
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Santana for Chamberlain is about a 90-spot dropoff in pitcher rankings. A-Rod would have to be 90-spots better than your current 3B to make this deal "even" and even then I'd find it hard to give up a potential Cy Young winner for Joba, who I don't consider starter-worthy in a 10-team mixed.
When owning two pitchers in fantasy that pitch against each other, do you start both? I've got Dice-K and Slowey tonight and can't decide if I should start one, or both... thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Did you see Carpenter-Gallardo this weekend? Start your best and don't worry about head-to-head square-offs.
Mike (Cleveland, OH)
Do you take emails during the week? If so, how do I get your email address? Thanks in advance. Mike.
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/mailbagESPN?event_id=15250 To be honest though, I don't often respond to all the e-mails I get, because they are quite numerous, but I do read them all.
Can i just say in response to Hank (Michigan) ... I had Carpenter against Gallardo the other day ... Me = Mucho happy
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Time to TRADE KEMP? Him batting 7th is a killer on his SB's and RBI's. Thanks
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
Actually I think batting 7th hurts Runs Scored more than anything else - nobody behind him to drive him in. But, yes - the momentum is definitely on the downward spiral.
Follow up re: Gary Sheffield...Do you make him an immediate add in all formats because of the guaranteed playing time and because he is swinging a hot bat?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
No, he's still not the same Sheffield of old, even with his hot streak. It's a matter of adding him if he's better than what you have, but *immediate add in all*? No.
If Melky's injury is serious, any chance we see the Bombers call up Austin Jackson?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
Maybe, but I doubt it. Let's just hope it isn't serious. I admit when I saw him crash into the wall, it looked like the whole arm went out of its socket... but he was moving it pretty well while walking off the field, so I'm optimistic. Jackson's only 22, so I'd like to see him cook a little bit more.
Adam (Newtown, PA)
With the Wieters call-up...does this impact other prospects potential debuts? I don't know the specifics but believe there's a correlation, correct?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
There is a correlation in starting the contract clock on prospects, but with nearly all the big names already up, I'd say there's no longer any impact - teams will bring up players based on need and not finances.
A guy in my league wants Wandy. What should I be looking to get in return for him, if I decide to pull the trigger?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Wandy is my pitcher No. 7. So I'd have to get back a hitter in the Top 50 plus an adequate pitching replacement to fill Wandy's spot. The worse the pitcher, the better my hitter needs to be.
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
By the way, Cheech. Submitting the same question 100's of times makes it less likely I answer it - not more likely.
COMMISH QUESTION: AJ, Do any of your leagues have draft orders based on the previous season's standings? If so, are they snake drafts or the alternative? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
I prefer doing a snake for non-keeper leagues. With keeper leagues, it can be worst-to-first each round. However, to prevent tanking, you should always throw some element of chance in who gets the first few picks via a weighted lottery or 7-12, 6-1 type format.
AJ, you pullin for Barca today or Man U for the repeat? Who should I part with out of this bunch: Kendrick, Ethier and Bruce
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
I just like to see beautiful football, my friend. If it isn't Ajax, I do not have a vested interest. I'd send Howie packing of the three.
You are the most hated and less helpful analyst. sometimes i think im better off doing the opposite. rollins wouldnt turn it around? RIGHT! I am no longer going to view your chats. i was actually depressed you were taking over today
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Oooooooooo-k. Glad to be of service. By the way, how is J-Roll and his .228 average?
If I am trying to catch lightning in a bottle for a little while, would you prefer Cuddyer over Sheff?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Cuddyer. To me, he's the hotter hand. Of course, you can just choose to go with the opposite if you believe I'm wrong 100 percent of the time, which actually would make me the *best* fantasy analyst on the planet if you think about it. Ha!
lol this is why i dont like you
admit you were wrong. rollins is batting what .300 with 20 runs 10 rbis a couple hrs and a couple sbs in his last 15 games?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Actually he is batting .288 with 1 HR and 6 RBIs in his last 14 - which is absolutely better than he had been doing. But still not what I would call a return to star status.
Cameron in Atlanta, GA
Last time I checked there are 162 games in a season, not 15. Adrian Beltre had a three-run homer Sunday...go trade for him.
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
If Wandy is your #7, where do you have Verlander? Dude looks dominant...
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Right now I have him at 13, but with a huge bullet. He started way lower, so he's certainly got more momentum at this point, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him even higher after another start or two.
Rob (Last Place)
At what point do you have to admit that it is not your season?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
If you're in last place right now, you need to take chances. Try and trade to shake up your lineup. What's the worst you can do? Finish in last? You're there already. But if you can't gain ground on the rest of the league by simply being "average" the rest of the way,you HAVE to make changes.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Folks, that's all our time for today! Thanks to all for the Q's, it was fun. We'll be back next week and Tristan is in for us at 11 tomorrow. Plus there's a 3pm chat today as well if we didn't get to you. See you the next time on Villa Alegre!
