Any predictions on the 40k event? What percentage of the major pros are there to play?

I'm thinking around 180. There have been players that I've spoken to who initially wanted to play in the event, but have changed their mind for one reason for another. I think it will be a field full of top pros and the final table (which will be televised on ESPN) will be full of recognizable players.

866 employees showed up for the event. Heading into Day 2, there are 81 players left with a top prize of $389,700 going to the winner. Not bad for a $500 entry.

I'm no Norman Chad so I'm going to say no, Phil Ivey will not win the main event. That said, if he even makes the November Nine, I couldn't imagine anyone would pick against him.

Any chance ESPN will avoid spoiling the ME FT results this November? Learning the results one day before watching it on TV is no more satisfying than learning the results four months before watching it on TV. Of course, the alternative is that I could just not watch ESPN at all for 2-3 days. Is that what they would prefer? I can help lower their ratings for the NFL and NBA for a couple days if that's what it takes.

We learned a lot after the first November Nine experience here at ESPN and I think that this year, you'll see a much improved method of delivering WSOP information as to not ruin the experience for any fan. Of course, if you're following my life blog from the Rio, you'd already know, but I won't fault anyone for not reading the blog until the TV show airs that night!

Shouldn't the $20K HORSE champion really be considered the world's best poker player since it requires skill in 5 different games, rather than just Hold 'em?

It's $50,000, but yes. I don't think that any pro these days considers the main event to crown the best player. They might be the luckiest over the span of two weeks, but in order to be one of the best, I would say proving yourself in the $50,000 HORSE is a must. Doyle Brunson felt the same way when he was asked in yesterday's chat. I would also bring up the possibility that the $40,000 no-limit hold 'em event will carry tremendous prestige this year and if it is a success, I bet we'll see it again next year.

I'd like to say yes, but the minefield has been too big for the few hundred notable pros to make it through. I'm going to say that this year we'll have two recognizable names at the main event final table. Ask me who when the main event starts July 3rd.

Negreanu's fantasy pool huh? I never filled out my entry. My initial thoughts were to say the second group as I see Bonomo having a great WSOP. I'll also credit a bracelet to Baron/Gross/Turner, but I think that the Negreanu group wins 3:2 with Allen, Ivey and Daniel winning a bracelet. Juanda is most definitely hungry for another one, but I think that after last year Cunningham wants to get back on track and Ivey is rumored once again to have bracelet bets.

Barney Frank's bill has had some movement, but there are still many who don't want to see poker regulated. That said, one of the items presented by Frank was a motion to delay the enforcement of the UIGEA. I haven't heard much positive news along that track either, but when all is said and done, I think that the UIGEA will never actually be implemented to the extent it was desired in 2006.

Great question Jeff. I think it really depends on the player and their respective positions in life. I'd say the younger kids that win bracelets typically think they're the best, spend their money and go bust trying to play tournaments out of their bankroll. Many of the middle-class amateurs who have won bracelets have been responsible and saved/invested their money. Even the biggest names in the industry make the biggest mistake with their bankrolls...and to answer your question. I'd say 1 in 4 players go broke after a big win.

Any Idea how many people will play in the $1000 NL event to start on May 30? Also, will the pros play in that event or will it be mainly No Names?

Rumors are that the pros will not play this event. It simply isn't worth it to play in such a huge field for a minimal reward. The lower tier pros who aren't playing in the $40K might play, but I don't expect a Negreanu/Ivey/Doyle level player to be in that massive field of at least 4000.

I'm not complaining, that's for sure. As far as Andy...he is playing in the 40K, but don't expect more bridesmaid performances from him this year. It's bracelet time for Bloch.

He's not playing this tournament to make an appearance. This is one tournament that Hellmuth would love to win. Could you imagine the ego after holding up the special 12th bracelet? He'll be there...and on time. This field is too good to miss out on two hours worth of hands.

I've heard that many of the lower level NLHE events at the WSOP are very soft. What buy-in level of online MTT's from Stars or FTP would you equate the competition to?

They can't be that soft. These fields are full of players with a dream. Chances are they've grinded online to build their bankrolls and now they're taking a shot. To equate it to an online tournament is tough, but probably a $100 entry. Players with talent and the bankroll to get them through, but not elite enough to play in the $1,000 tournaments. I'd love to hear all your thoughts on that one...

If we know anything about poker players, they're going to take risks when things are good and bad. The economy will hurt the WSOP, but the thing is that people will show up in Vegas because this is the premier event. I'm looking at a drop in overall players, but by adding these new events, its almost guaranteed that the WSOP will be giving away more money this year than ever before.

Ouch. A Cory Lidle reference already? Isn't it too early? Predictions on last year's Nov 9...hmm...Montgomery is going to be playing in 25 events, so I'd imagine that he'll come through in a couple as long as he doesn't try to bluff anyone. Phillips, Rheem, Demidov, Eastgate and Schwartz are all going to be back as well and playing in as many events as possible. As much as I'd love to see Eastgate win another bracelet, I don't think this is the year, but I have a feeling that Demidov will further solidify his breakout with a strong performance this year.

He's made the splash already everywhere else -- Elky. Bertrand Grospellier. He already is in the lead for player of the year honors and has the stamina to play in every event possible. I bet he'd probably play 2 at once if he could.

Philly G (Phil Gordon for those that were wondering) is playing in a couple events...I'm thinking between 10 and 15. He's at the point where he's stated numerous times that his kid is more important than a bracelet (and he's right on). I'd love to see him make a run though. If there's one person I'd like to see make a final table, it's Phil.

I've also been reading that the $1k fields are "super soft." I have a hard time believing that there are that many "bad" players that can pony up $1k to play in a crapshoot tournament. It seems ludicrous to think that the field isn't tough.

Absolutely. The buy-in is low enough so that anyone who wanted to play in the WSOP can play. After all, online sites have $33 satellites to get in....I'd say "soft", but not "super soft," I'll find a player or two in the event and get an actual answer in a couple days.

I'd say that's debatable in both cases. Live pros have won online...recently too. Gavin Smith just won an FTOPS event. I think the respect is there from the live pros, but I think it's more of a feeling that while they're experienced with the cards, they aren't experienced with the essence of the live game. You don't have to be a pro to see this either. Head to a casino and watch a table or two.

Well Matt Damon...Of course. It means the world to a poker player to hold up a bracelet at the end of a tournament. that's what you're playing for. Is the prestige watered down a little? I believe so, but to claim one of the limited edition bracelets and to have your name engraved in history isn't so bad imo.

Can't confirm, but nothing shocks me anymore with these guys. There are two players who I can guarantee aren't broke in Phil Gordon and Bernard Lee. Both are way to smart to lose all their money...although Phil likes to make terrible prop bets

I actually got to meet Chuck last year. Shaking his hand was quite cool and intimidating at the same time. He's a beast. There is a MMA fight in town during the main event and I'd guess that a player or two will make an appearance.

I'd highly recommend pre-registering for the events online at worldseriesofpoker.com. The lines at the Rio can be quite brutal, but if you are going to wait and do it in person, I'd recommend you give yourself a couple hours.

Being a company guy, I'll say that they'll be great for the network. Every event will have pros/celebrities/names. As a poker fan, I would've liked to see the HORSE 50K, and a couple other events just to see some new names and faces. Thankfully ESPN360.com will be broadcasting events too and I'll get to see 24 final tables there as well.

If you'd like some reference-I would say that a lower buy-in WSOP tourney is very equivalent to one of the daily $55 larger field tourneys online-lots of bad players early, most of whom bust by level 4/5, leaving a field of mostly solid players, a few very bad players, and a few extremely good players.
