Chat with NASCAR Now's Tim Brewer
![]() |
Brewer, one of the most successful crew chiefs in NASCAR history with 53 wins, 55 poles and two NASCAR Cup Series championships, joined ESPN in 2007 and reports from the popular ESPN Tech Center during race telecasts.
Brewer worked with some of the greatest drivers ever in NASCAR, including three-time NASCAR champion Cale Yarborough, the only driver to win three consecutive championships from 1976-78; three-time NASCAR champion Darrell Waltrip; and 1988 NASCAR champion Bill Elliott.
A native of the Winston-Salem, N.C., area, Brewer started his racing career in 1969 at the age of 14 with local driver Ernie Shaw at Winston-Salem?s Bowman Gray Stadium. In 1973, at the age of 18, Brewer became one of the youngest crew chiefs in NASCAR history when he joined the Cup Series team of Winston-Salem driver Richard Childress and served for five years.

Tim is here!

Do you think the change for jr. is the beggining of better things? And do you think he will be a contender after this?
Tim Brewer (1:30 PM)
Well, for yesterday's race and the show that we did yesterday, Rick Hendrick said that the 88 team will get whatever they need to be competitive. I think that was Dale Jr. saying that I don't know whatever adjustments you made, but let's get some more of that.

Are drivers getting more used to the car of tomorrow? there seems to not be as much complaining this year.
Tim Brewer (1:31 PM)
I think they're getting used to working with the car, because they were used to working with a car with a lower roll center and down force. With the COT, they have to run it now. Just like anything else, you're getting more accustomed to it, how it reacts. Most of the drivers are doing that.
Jason: (Willow Grove, PA)
Tim, when is Jack Roush going to realize that David Ragan needs similiar changes made to his team, that Dale Earnhardt Jr has received?
Tim Brewer (1:32 PM)
Jack Roush has been notorious for making changes at will. When he gets to the point to changing a crew chief at the 17 or with Matt Kenseth, he's listening to the drivers, but when he has enough information to justify a change, he's like Hendrick, he will make the change when he deems it needs to be done.
Darrell (Petal, MS)
Tim, do you have to stay in the tech garage all race long whenver espn/abc covers a race, or do you actually get out and catch a few laps?
Tim Brewer (1:33 PM)
I've got the greatest job in all the world. I love being in the garage. I listen to the radios. I get a chance to watch the race. I'm talking to the producers. We're setting there watching the race, we're talking. If the sun's going down or the rains coming out, we're talking about it. It's a great place to watch the race from.
Chris (Dallastown, PA)
After seeing Kasey Kahne run the new Dodge engine on Sunday and have a sixth place finish do you think this will be enough to get him into the Chase? If he does make the chase do you see him being able to contend for the Championship?
Tim Brewer (1:35 PM)
I don't know if he's going to have enough to get into the chase, but the new Dodge engine has a new power curve. That new Dodge engine, I think the R6, is performing a lot better. Every driver that's put it in the car and put his foot on the throttle has been very impressed with the engine.
Brock (Atlanta, GA)
Do you think Dale Jr. has a ligitimate shot to make the chase, or has waited to long. Whats your opinion on the new crew chief?
Tim Brewer (1:36 PM)
I think the change was good for Earnhardt Jr as well as for Tony Eury. It's about chemistry and it wasn't working. I think Dale has time to come back and get in the chase, if he has some good finishes and some wins. I feel the whole Hendrick team will do what it can to make sure Earnhardt makes the chase.

Why is the success of Tony Stewart not more of a headline? The man is a new owner on a new team and is the points leader. I feel as a Tstew fan that his driving ability does not get the recognition that it deserves.
Tim Brewer (1:37 PM)
I think Tony has surrounded himself by some very very good people and has done an excellent job with the support of Hendrick. They've done a good job with Ryan Newman. I think the team as a whole is solid. Tony's surprised a lot of people by leading the points this early. Why the people haven't picked up on it? I don't know. I know they probably didn't expect it. Tony's been kind of overlooked, but I don't think he will for the next few weeks.
Nick (West by God Virginia)
What do you think the new Dodge engine will mean for the #9 team? Do they make the chase? Will they run it for the rest of the season?
Tim Brewer (1:38 PM)
I'm not sure if Kasey's going to make the Chase or not, but I think the new Dodge engine is going to contribute a lot to him getting more of an advantage to making the chase.

Whats goin on with Juan Pablo Montoya? He cant seem to catch a break and break the top 12. He gets a starting 3rd spot this weekend and ends up with a bad tire in the straight. Is he snake bit, or is there somthing else going on? Thanks.
Tim Brewer (1:39 PM)
Well, A lot of it is racing a lot. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's not so good. If you run over something and blow a tire in the straightaway, that's just bad luck.
Greg FL
With a poor showing of the 24 car, do you think he could regain the point lead this week?
Tim Brewer (1:40 PM)
Jeff Gordon had a bad race. Will they bounce back? Sure they will. They lost their primary car in a qualifying wreck. Anything they put on the truck is very good equipment. They had some bad breaks and he had a bad day. I'm sure Jeff Gordon understands what unfolded yesterday and they're smart enough to know that they'll have bad races occasionally and yesterday was one of those races.
steve (texas)
hey Tim who do you like at Pocano?
Tim Brewer (1:42 PM)
Pocono has belonged to Kasey Kahne the last couple of years. Jimmie Johnson has been good. Kyle Busch. It's going to be a great race. It's going to be a testing round, because this race will set up a program for the fall race in Pocono and at Indy. If you have a good package there, it will give you good information for the fall race. I look for Dodge to have a good race with that new engine. Jimmie has always been good there. I think it's going to be a really good race.
Jim (Joesonville, PA)
Is it me or does Denny Hamlin have the worst luck. He easily had a top-5/top-10 car. You have to fee for the guy!
Tim Brewer (1:43 PM)
Yes you do. Mike Ford is a great crew chief. It's like Pocono a few years ago, they won both races there. That was a very good thing. As far as luck, Denny's not having a lot of good luck right now. Pocono last year, he made his feelings known. Denny is a racer. A very great racer, but like you said, he's not having any luck right now.
derek (oakland park, tenn)
do they have any fix to the tires at indy?
Tim Brewer (1:45 PM)
Goodyear has been working very hard and had a lot of tests and Indy. I've talked to some of the engineers. They're going back next week. Hopefully they have the issue solved. There are a lot of issues remaining. It remains to be seen what the outcome will be. Especially with the aerodynamics of the car and the center of gravity, it tends to slide in the corner a bit. Goodyear has their handful, but they have some time to test now that the Indy 500 is over.
JR (CO)
Hey Tim, have you heard anything on the new Ford engine? Thanks
Tim Brewer (1:46 PM)
I've talked to Doug Yates a couple of months ago, they're working with the engine. NASCAR has to be made aware of any desires the manufacturor wants to do.
Joe (Fleetwood PA)
Hey Tim can only imagine if Stewart would have four tire change instead of two
Tim Brewer (1:48 PM)
Well, what a crew chief does on those pitstops is he's constantly gathering information from the driver all day. IT's all in a plus or minus column. All on what hte driver needs. When he calls a two tire change, it's his call. Chad Knauss made what he thought was the best call. But he came in first and came out ninth. That's not good either. He got beat right there at the end. Did ne need more of an adjustment? Would four tires have been better? I don't know. But he looked good until the 48 drove by him.
Patrick (Agawam MA)
Would any other tracks benefit by going to a concrete surface or are Bristol and Dover unique in that way?
Tim Brewer (1:49 PM)
You've got Nashville, Kentucky. Everyone likes concrete because it doesn't change much throughout the day. The asphalt, when it's sunbaked, they change. The concrete, I like them more than asphalt, because they're more predictable.
Brady Pottstown PA
Tim, Lance McGrew is now dales "interim" Crew Chief, do you think he will be made permanent or do you think Mr. Hendrick will put someone else on his pit box, and if so...who???
Tim Brewer (1:50 PM)
If I were betting, I would say Lance won a job yesterday. I say that because he's worked with Dale before in the Nationwide Series. He's a talented man. He takes the blunt of "do you want to be Dale Jr.'s crew chief?" He says that he wants that. I think he'll be a welcome addition to the team.
Tim Brewer (1:52 PM)
We're in the Craftsman Tech garage. We're tyring to share information with the fans. We try to give you the information in a way that's fun. Any questions? Direct them through ESPN.com and we'll try to answer.
